FAQs About RC Sailboats

If you do not see your question, or an answer to it, listed below, get in touch with us and we’ll happily give you one!

How do RC Sailboats work?

RC Sailboats work through radio control, which is a given considering the “RC” in the name, and a bit of skill. You need to steer, draw the sail, etc. Interestingly enough, it’s a lot like sailing a real sailboat, but you’re using a controller to do it.

This is where the skill part comes in. Drawing the sails, for example, requires timing and precision to ensure that you’re doing it properly. If you don’t, you face it sinking, should the model be a very extensive one, or not sailing properly at all.

the-best-rc-sailboat

Where can I race a RC Sailboat?

You can race a RC Sailboat virtually anywhere. Although, racing in the ocean may not be the best idea if you’re very invested, both emotionally and financially, in your boat.

This is where lines come in. A lot of users will have a line system to ensure that if there is a crash and their boat sinks, or whatever the case may be, they can still retrieve their vessel without actually having to go into the water.

Are there are RC Sailboats that use wind?

Yes! Some RC Sailboats do not use electricity or a motor as a source to run. Some only work with windy weather, but still require a controller for steering, drawing the sails, etc.

What happens when the wind stops?

This is another instance where a tow line comes in handy. If the wind stops you have two options – wait for it to come back, or use your tow line to reel it back in. Some users have small tugboats that are able to go out and retrieve a RC Sailboat that has a downed sail, has stalled, etc.

What if it tips?

If your RC Sailboats tips, it’s obviously not a very good one. The good quality ones have something at the bottom to ensure this doesn’t happen unless it’s hit by another one, has a hole in the side, etc.

It may tip into the water from the wind or have the bow go under water, but it should not tip on its side completely in any instance other than one of the reasons previously mentioned.

If it does tip, reel it in using your tow line or go into the water and get it.

I would definitely go for K2 – manufactured by Sailboat RC company. That 1-metre hull beast won World AND European Championship, USA Nationals, Southern America Cup, Australian Nats…and all in 2017/2018 season!!

Check it out, it is outstanding piece of art really, a must have RC Sailboat.

I am looking for 1 mtr fibreglass remote controlled sailing boat preferably European or american. Thanks Annette

' src=

Hej! Have you found something? I search for a rc sailboat that I can transport with my bicicle.

Hi Annette, I too am looking for a 1 meter or 3 foot sailboat. Had a “Tradewinds” that was 3 feet long and loved it! BUT, the 5 pound center board weight (I used BB’s) was hard to find…. Want to get one so it can be sailed in the pond/small lake outside. A friend got one too and we used to “race”. But, we had no buoys – there are usually two or three and depends on the size of the boat.

In the Chicago area, Wisconsin, Chicago, Indiana (Munster), Michigan, and Florida (about 20 miles from Orlando) – we were lucky and I was sailing anywhere from 13′ to 45′ boats. People that did not know me were freaked out when I could sail.

Another boat makes sense here. And, if I had two, then another person can sail too. And, I can make buoys that are needed to race boats. Hmm, that is a good idea.

I am a former professional licensed Captain, sailboat dealer and racer who is now landlocked. Looking to start RC sailing, but prefer to identify key class associations, publications and such information to make sure there is a strong RC class or one design to guide me. Looking forward to guidance first, then back on the water the right way.

My 18-year-old sails 420s and Lasers competitively, and is now asking for a r/c sailboat for Christmas. He has never used one before, but thinks the idea sounds fun. He is engineer-minded, grew up rigging and racing. We live on a bay off the ocean. Can anyone recommend a r/c sailboat $300 or less?

I am sourcing an RC catamaran (3’+-) and would like suggestions. Thx.

Click the picture to get to the boat's page Sailboats Sailboats use the power of the wind acting on sails to propel the boat. Model sailboats are typically controlled via a multi-channel radio transmitter in the hands of the operator with a corresponding receiver in the boat. By changing the position of the two joysticks on the transmitter signals are sent over two separate channels on a single radio frequency (assigned to the individual boat/operator). On the boat, the radio receiver is connected to two battery powered electric motors or servos. Signals from the radio transmitter are interpreted by the radio receiver and translated into instructions to change the position of the servos. One servo controls the position of both main and jib sails together (allowing the sails to be trimmed), the other the position of the rudder (allowing the boat to be steered).

Sailing Monohulls Model sail boats are governed by the same ISAF (International Sailing Federation) Racing Rules of Sailing that are used for full sized crewed sailing boats (with the inclusion of Appendix E, that introduces special rules to govern the radio-controlled sport). There are four international classes of radio sailing boats recognized by the ISAF-Radio Sailing Division and several other international monohull classes: (from smallest to largest). - International RG65 RG65 are monohulls with maximum lenght of 650mm, three different rigs allowed with a maximum sail area 2250 cm² - International One Metre (IOM) The IOM class rules specify a monohull of maximum length 1000 mm, with maximum draught 420 mm. There is a minimum weight of 4000 g, which makes homebuilding of competitive boats possible. The IOM has three one-design rigs. To keep costs down, hull materials are restricted to either wood or glassfiber, while masts and booms are restricted to either aluminium or wood. - International Marblehead (M) Maximum length: 1290 mm. Maximum draught: ca 700 mm. Up to six rigs are allowed, the tallest being about 2200 mm. - International Ten Rater (10R) - International A Class (A), the largest of the international radio sailing classes.

Sailing Multihulls There are several multihull classes, one of the most popular multihull classes is the Mini40 class or F48 with 48inch maximum lenght and 48 inch maximum beam . Other classes are the 2m class, the new MultiOne 1metre class and the very new 65M multihull class . The 65M is a very exciting class with well sailing, small and easy to transport multihulls. Multihull classes from smallest to largest: - 65M Class In 2008 some multihullers on various bulletin boards discussed building RG65 sized multihulls. The 65M class evolved with no other rules than overall lenght not exceeding 650mm. First designs came up in 2009 by Siri, who let Ernst Zemann a multihull designer draw two different hulls and Dick Lemke who started a Trimaran and a Catamaran. Several new designs followed. The 65Ms sail well, are easy to be transported and inexpensive compared to larger multihulls. - 65M Class The class homepage is here , new boats can be registered here , selfbuilding plans can be downloaded on this site for free. - MultiOne Class Multihulls with 1m length, unfortunately the class Homepage is not accessible any more. - Mini40 Class Popular multihull class with boats not exceeding 1220mm in length and a maximum beam of 1220mm. - 2m Class Multihull class with boats not exceeding 2 metres in length with a maximum beam of 2 meters and a maximum mast height of 2,8 meters. There are no restrictions on sail area.

Radio controlled racing boats are designed for maximum speed and maneuverability. Various syles of racing include circuits of different shapes laid out on the water with buoys. The most common courses are the 1/6th mile oval that consists of 330' straight sections followed by 70' diameter turns. The International Model Power Boat Association (IMPBA) as well as the North American Model Boat Association (NAMBA) have specific rules and regulations to address the course, race rules, and formats. In addition to oval racing there are straight a way (SAW) racing. This is a contest to see how fast you can make the boat go in a straight line. Timed events are held where the boats need to go through a starting light and an ending light. The speed is calculated by the timed difference from start to stop vs the length between the lights. Again IMPBA and NAMBA rules apply. Some enthusiasts race in the sea controlling their craft from a pursuing boat known as a "chase boat". These courses will usually be a few miles long and the competition is judged against the clock to find the fastest in class. Within the various styles of racing there will be a number of classes depending upon engine size and type.

Set Up and Sail

The V11 detailing is simple but effective. In conjunction with the V11 Set Up Guide, assembly is straight forward, and vital tuning information assists you to quickly understand and master your V11's potential

IMG_6609.jpg

Vickers RC Sailing build processes are well refined and thought out.

Our boats are light, stiff and clever,  keeping to a simple and effective philosophy around detailing

The V11 design is a hull, foils and bulb package to compliment the full range of conditions experienced in RC Sailing. The hull design has full volume forward and features the familiar chines and tumblehome of the modern IOM for reduced weight and windage, as well as good tracking characteristics. The V11 features our peaked style foredeck for efficient water shedding when buried downwind and a geometrically strong shape for the forestay and mast ram areas.

Foils are slippery and strategically positioned with the rig to balance the yacht. The V11s forgiving balance through the wind range, allows the skipper to focus on the race at hand, and not rely on micro steering to maintain a consistent VMG.

The rig sits solid on its deck stepped mast step, complimented at deck level with an encapsulating mast gate arrangement over the mast ram. The rudder tube is rigidly supported inside the moulded servo tray.

Hull construction is from E-Glass Fibreglass Cloth and High Grade Epoxy Resin.

The foils are Carbon Fibre Layup with High Grade Epoxy Resin.

Paint system is a 2 pot Urethane and the boat is thoroughly post cured before finishing.

The V11 Features-

Plastic main hatch access.

Ready to accept RMG Winch and Standard sized Rudder Servo

Bow Bumper attached.

Hardware is Bantock including an adjustable mast ram, adjustable mainsheet post and tiller arm.

All necessary fittings attached for standing and running rigging.

The V11 comes out of our workshop in Beach Haven, Auckland New Zealand and is ready to accept rigs and electrics.

We also make sails that can be added to the order, or ordered separately.

Essential to success in sailing comes down to the  Rig and how it is set up and tuned. The V11 comes with a Set Up Guide that covers all the expert information needed to set up like the guns. It specifies the hardware, construction and tuning information to get your rig and sails set up and sailing near optimum straight off the bat, so you can enjoy your racing and punch above your weight.

Welcome To Our Class

The Remote Control (R/C) Laser Model is a scale version of the famous "one design" Laser, the most popular "real boat" sailing class in the world.

The R/C Laser, however, does not require a trailer, life jackets, or hours of set-up time before you can be on the water and sailing. The R/C Laser was designed to be up and sailing out of the box in under 7 minutes. All you need is 2 feet of water, a desire to sail, and some wind. Just snap in the keel, mast, and rudder assemblies...slip in the batteries...clip on the sails and you are ready to go. It is that simple.

Send your club news and events information to RC Laser Class Secretary, Nick Mortgu at [email protected] .

I have often admired the quiet, graceful way radio control sailboats glide across the water at my local pond, using only wind power. So much so that I decided to find out more, and I did a lot of digging into RC sailboats for beginners, and what I should buy. Here’s the result of my research – I hope it helps you!

Top Picks Table

The volantex v791-1 review, what do i need to consider in choosing an rc sailboat for beginners, how do rc sailboats work, batteries – the power source, the radio control system, shafts and universals, how do i sail a remote control sailboat, is it hard to sail rc sailboats for beginners, where can i race a radio control sailboat.

  • How Do I get Started with Radio Control Sailboats?

RC Sailboats For Beginners – Top Picks

It’s difficult to conclude which sailboat might be best for beginners, as it all depends on how serious you want to take the hobby, and in particular whether you’ll want to race it eventually.

One good way of approaching this is to join a club ( US ) ( UK ) and get to chat with other members about their experiences. However, if you’re not the joining type, or just want to get on to your local pond as quickly as possible, here’s a selection of RC sailboats you might like.

We’ve scoured the web for advice on club sites and forums to back up our choices, so you shouldn’t be disappointed. As a beginner, you’ll probably want to choose a boat that is ready to sail (RTS), with very little, if anything, to do before getting out onto the water. Avoid boats that require a lot of assembly, save for inserting the main sail and batteries.

So, if you’re short of time, here’s the top pick 3 RC sailboats for beginners we’ve found:

Any recommendations we make are always based on either products we already own and use, or are carefully assessed in terms of their attributes and user feedback – criteria we use ourselves whenever we buy. Where products sold by Amazon are suggested, they will have the following criteria at the time of writing, unless there are no alternatives available:

  • Minimum of 4 stars
  • No more than 10% of all reviews are 1 or 2 stars
  • The product has a minimum of 100 reviews

We also highly rate products that have free shipping or are sold through Amazon Prime.

Look out for a ready to sail (RTS) or even a Ready to Race (RTR) model. Go for a model which has everything included (probably apart from the AA batteries for the transmitter – some beginners’ models even has these!)

Check out your local club, to see what they sail there. That way, you’ll get advice on what to buy, and consider a boat which others in the club race. It’s much more fun if you can participate in club racing. Find where your nearest club is by talking to your local hobby shop, or by contacting the American Model Yachting Association  here or the Model Yachting Association in the UK, here .

If you feel particularly ambitious, you could consider buying an RC sailboat kit. More about that here .

A radio controlled sailboat is one that can be sailed and controlled remotely with radio control equipment to monitor and chart its course. You can find easy, ready-to-use sailboats available, pre-built to include a radio, along with other receivers and servos, an electric motor, and all the other fittings and accessories needed.

The transmitter, the thing you hold in your hands as your boat is sailing, usually operates on a 2.4 GHz frequency, and either has a wheel-like controller to control the boat’s steering or a couple of sticks that control the steering and the position of the sails.

A common setup involves 2 channels – one for the rudder control, and the other for the sails. The right stick moves left or right, and usually controls the rudder (making the boat go left or right), whilst the left stick, moving up and down, controls the sails (moving them in, or out).

The transmitter sends a signal to a receiver in the boat; depending on the type of signal (ie whether it is a steering command, or a sail command) to tell onboard batteries (usually Ni-MH or Li-Po type) to power a servo (ie something which translates an electrical signal into a mechanical signal) to move either the rudder left or right, or the sails in or out.

Whilst purists may consider a radio controlled sailboat should use only wind power, rather than electric to move it through the water, some do have the benefit of having an electric motor, either as a backup for when the boat is becalmed or for those tricky maneuvers when bringing it back to the pontoon.

The electric motor, connected to the shaft that runs towards the back of the boat  is usually at the front end of the boat. It also happens to contain a grease-filled stuffing tube that is used to provide lubrication as well as to prevent water from entering into the hull.

The propeller is usually to be found at the end of the shaft.

All the sensitive electronic equipment in the boat is protected by waterproof membranes or casings, for obvious reasons.

What Are The Main Components of an RC Sailboat?

Most model RC sailboats for beginners come with built in nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries, although some also come with the costlier, more powerful Lithium Polymer (Li-Po) batteries. Lithium Polymer batteries are lighter as well and have a high capacity, which makes them ideal for longer runs. To learn more about batteries for rc models, click here .

Lead Acid batteries are used in larger models, and use the weight for ballast to deliver a clean source of power.

The most common type of  Transmitter  for RC sailboats are the stick-type transmitters that allow for easy use and control over the sails and rudder. The Transmitter is held in your hands, and is usually set on a common frequency, such as 2.4 Mhz.

The  Receiver , which is positioned inside the hull of the remote control boat,  is the part that is responsible for converting radio signals from the transmitter to an electric signal used to control the rudder and sails.

A Servo switch  converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. In beginner radio control sailboats one servo moves the rudder, and another is the sail servo.

There are usually two popular choices of electric motors used in RC Sailboats. The first is a brushless motor that is known to give high speed but poor low end speed control. If you do have a brushless motor, it is generally recommended that a matched pair of motor and electronic speed controls be bought.

The second, the brushed motors, have good low end control and are available from low speed, high torque to high speed, lower torque.

Flexible shafts are often used in racing RC sailboats, but need to be carefully picked in accordance to size and mounting configuration in the hull.

Here’s a brief, step-by-step of how to work RC sailboats for beginners. For a more detailed step by step guide on sailing an RC sailboat, click here .

Clean and tension the rigging whilst it’s on its cradle (A lot of model beginner rc sailboats are sold with a cradle to make it easier to work on the boat whilst it’s out of the water, or they are available separately).

Ensure the battery or batteries are charged and check the functioning of the radio control equipment.

Check the wind and the direction it is blowing. RC sailboats are usually pretty light in weight so you will need to watch out for whether your sailboat can withstand the winds prevailing at the time.

Equally, watch out for conditions which are too calm – this can be very frustrating as the boat languishes becalmed!

Avoid river sailing when you’re a beginner – the currents may be strong and make control difficult.

Also avoid ponds, lakes, and bodies of water with a lot of vegetation – both seen (on the surface) and unseen (under the surface). Weeds may catch the keel and or rudder, stranding the RC yacht out of reach.

Never sail near swimmers, bathers, and people fishing, particularly if you’re still learning to control it properly.

Your boat will have to sail upwind when you set it off from the dock. Just place it in the water, turn the bow slightly away from the side of the pond or pier and tighten the sails acting on the left joystick, allowing the wind to power the sails and propel the sailboat forward.

You can always stop the sailboat by tuning the bow into the wind and letting go of the sails control line to release the wind pressure off of the sails and pull the boat to a halt.

To return, make sure your sailboat is sailing windward (ie into the wind). As the boat nears the pier, release the sails to reduce the boat’s speed.

The more experience you get of sailing an RC sailboat, the more you’ll enjoy it. I was told to just do it – the more mistakes you make the better – and sooner –  you’ll learn.

The popularity of this amazing hobby means you’re never alone unless you want to be. RC sailing clubs are great places for newbies and experienced RC skippers alike.

Knowing how to control the boat in different conditions is where the real skill comes in. It’s all about timing and precision. And the better you get as an RC sailor, the more enjoyable the experience.

With a steady hand, practice and a good and thorough knowledge of the ins and outs of how it works, there is no reason why, with a few days of hard training, preferably from an expert, a beginner shouldn’t get the hang of sailing one.

rc sailboats for beginners

As a beginner, you may want to get familiar with the general aspects of rc sailing before entering races. Nevertheless, racing rc sailboats is an exciting hobby, and will no doubt provide a sociable way of testing your skills.

The best way to further this aspect of the hobby is to join a club, details of which will be held with your local hobby shop, or check out a local club near you. You’ll find lots of help finding a club, as well as sailing your boat, at the  American Model Yachting Association and the Model Yachting Association in the UK.

The official body overseeing RC sailboat racing internationally is the  International Radio Sailing Association .

Once you get into it, racing provides a set of rigorous rules to sail by. There are specific classes of racing boats, generally denoted by a short letter/number combination. For example, the EC R12M class is found predominantly in the USA, EC standing for East Coast, with a hull length of between 58 and 60 in.

Other classes include the R1M, which requires hulls of 1 m in length. A good example of this is the Robbe Windstar.

Some clubs organize races for particular models, such as the Kyosho Fairwind.

A common racing standard is the Dragonforce 65 class. This type of boat is readily available and ready to sail. See the table above. Here’s a short video showing some exciting DF65 racing:

How Do I Get Started with Radio Control Sailboats?

Your best bet when starting out, as I found, is to look for a local club, and join it. That way you’ll get lots of advice which will probably save you hundreds of dollars in the long run.

If you’re not the joining type, head over to your nearest pond, lake or resevoir and see if there are rc sailors on the water, and if so get talking to them. They’ll certainly be enthusiastic and willing to help.

RC Sailboats

An overview of radio controlled sail boats and a brief explanation of scale model sailboats, semi scale rc sport, and rc racing sailing yachts. kits, rtr and scratch built..

RC sailboats can be divided up in three main categories:

  • RC Sport Sail
  • RC Sailing Yachts (for racing)
  • RC Scale Sail

RC sport sail

Most kits and RTR (ready-to-run) model RC sail boats are best categorized as RC sport scale. This category is a happy medium between full-blown scale models and RC racing yachts.

Some have become so widely distributed that new racing classes has been formed around them. Good examples are Graupner's Micro Magic and Kyosho's Fairwind.

They are usually semi-scale of modern cruising yachts or made to resemble America’s cup sailboats.

The lower cost models come with ABS hulls, whereas the higher end models come with more durable fiberglass hulls. Drop keels, aluminum masts and Dacron sails are most common.

RC racing yachts

If you want to get into RC yacht racing there are a number of classes to choose from. Each country has a governing body ( American Model Yachting Association (AMYA) in the USA, Model Yachting Association in the UK) under the International Model Yacht Racing Union.

As with full size regattas, RC model yacht racing face some of the same issues. Entry rules for competitions typically follow depending on if the class is Open or Closed Design.

Open or Construction Class

What these classes have in common is that the boats are not identical - instead the rules are made up like a mathematical formula. The good thing that brings is that the challenge is three-fold – design, construction and sailing the course.

The disadvantage is in that the rules for some classes can be complicated. Some classes have gained in popularity precisely because the rules fro previously established classes were so hard to understand.

Examples of some popular open design model yacht classes:

  • 6 Metre - M6R
  • 10 rater – R10r
  • 36" (36-inch)

Closed Design or One-design Class

All entries have to be the same design. Some are kits from a single manufacturer others are open to home built model boats.

  • Soling 1 Meter
  • Micro Magic - Graupner
  • Fairwind - Kyosho

RC scale sail

We're talking about scale model sail boats that actually use its sails as the main means of propulsion. RC scale sail is called minisail in continental Europe. The vast majority of sailing scale model boats is scratch built. There are a few kits - Billings Collin Archer RS-1 comes to mind.

The prevailing problem with scaling a sailboat is that stability doesn’t scale linearly with size. The result is that model boats will always be significantly less stable than the boat or ship it was modeled after. Left as is, it may have detrimental effects on the model’s sea keeping abilities. There are ways to minimize the effect.

A smallish boat built to a large scale is more stable than a large ship to a small scale. For instance, say you can only transport a model 1m long. Building a model of an 8m cruising yacht at 1:8 scale will be more stable than a model of the USS Constitution at 1:48 scale. This is true even if they end up weighing the same and being the same length. I bet the yacht will be a much better sailer too.

Bigger is always better too, when it comes to scale RC sailboats. Try and build the biggest model you can get away with. A larger model will be more forgiving on construction techniques, materials and the weight of components. The finished model will also be faster, a better sailer and handle stronger winds than if it was built smaller.

Making considerable effort to build light is always a god habit. The higher up a part or component is located, the more important this becomes. For instance, rigging components need to be light weight.

Other factors are beam and draft (width and depth for landlubbers). A wider and deeper hull will naturally be more stable than thin and shallow.

There are two tricks to increase the stability of model boats artificially:

Add a drop keel

By adding a drop keel you can bring the center of gravity down while adding profile area. The greater under-water profile helps against drifting sideways. All sailboats drift downwind some, because the surface water moves with the wind. The lower boundary-layers of a body of water are influenced less by the wind than layers closer to the surface. Therefore, the deeper any extension of the hull is, the less drift.

Typically a boat with a drop-keel also needs a larger rudder. A good guideline is to make the rudder area 10-12% of the total submerged hull profile.

Extent the hull below the waterline

Some builders rather build the boat hull slightly out of scale than add a drop keel. The most bang-for-the-buck is to deepen the hull. Same rule apply about the rudder (rudder area = 10-12% of total submerged profile). You could technically make the hull wider, but the effect is not as great.

Any change in the submerged hull profile need to maintain the same geometric center to balance the center of effort on the sails. Naturally, if you know what you are doing, the sail and rig can be modified also.

A Final Word on Scale RC Sailboats

Generally stay away from lateen rigs, multi-hull, centerboard designs and square riggers, at least until you have become an experienced RC sailboats captain and/or builder.

A Basic Guide to Wind-Powered Boating

SIZE/TRANSPORT NOTES Since RC sail craft are available in many shapes that feature different mast/keel layouts, the beginner will need to first figure-out what size yacht will fit his/her lifestyle. If you have a small vehicle and limited storage space at home, a 20 to 30-inch long hull with an easily detachable mast/sails and a detachable lower keel may best suit your needs. If you choose a larger hull with an equally long mast and keel, it will take-up a lot more vehicle trunk volume; plus, more pre-sail assembly at the lake. Now if your local sailing location has any amount of submerged vegetation, a hull with a shorter-length lower keel will help prevent any weed buildup problems on the underside of the boat. As for the mast/sail layouts available, most kit/RTR boats use a two-piece mast to ease transport and the lower keel mounts in a recess in the hull bottom and it’s retained by a single thumb nut on the deck of the hull.

KIT VS. RTR Until recently the only way to start out in RC sailing would involve building a kit boat made-up from either a wood, fiberglass or molded plastic hull. Today both plastic and fiberglass RTR yachts are commonplace; so, you can now choose between constructing your first sail craft from a kit or by going with an almost-ready-to-run sailboat. If you’ve had some previous RC car/aircraft experience and have enough workspace, a sailboat kit from such companies as Victor Model Products, Thunder Tiger, Kyosho and Graupner can be built using regular hobby tools, adhesives and paints. To complete the majority of these kits you’ll only need to roundup a stick-style, two-channel surface radio with two servos, one of which will need to be a high-torque model to control the movement of the jib/main sails on the mast.

In the event you decide to go with a RTR sailboat, Pro Boat, AquaCraft and several of the kit makers listed above all sell preassembled yachts that are suitable for the novice sailor. In most cases, these RTR boats come from their boxes with only the need to install the pre-rigged mast and sails, attach the keel unit and assemble the hull’s support stand. Adding some batteries to the boat’s radio system will finish-up the yacht’s basic buildup as you can then check/trim the rudder and sail movements on the prepped hull. Once rigged at lakeside, you’ll want to make sure that all of the vessel’s mast and sail control lines are properly attached and tensioned as indicated in the owner’s manual. Then make a quick range check of the powered-up radio system to make sure that the sails and rudder run through their full range of motions. At this juncture you can launch your new sailboat and the fun of learning how to use the wind to “power” your hull can begin.

First runs: Depending on the wind’s direction across the water you’ll find that by letting out the sails (moving the left stick on the transmitter upwards) will “catch” the air and this is what’s called running downwind or with the wind. To sail in the opposite direction (towards the wind) you’ll have to steer the hull at an angle to the air which is “tacking” and this technique will have less sail extension than the downwind transmitter stick settings. If you steer the boat’s bow directly into the wind it’ll likely just sit there which is to put the yacht “in irons” and the sailor will have to let the bow swing to one side to again get air in the sails. An important factor to sailing in either wind condition is that you must have enough forward hull speed to maintain the flow of water past the rudder blade as this will allow you to turn the hull whenever needed. It will take some time to master the balance between wind speed, sail settings and hull angles to the wind; but, in only a short time the novice will be able to maneuver his/her yacht no matter which direction the air is moving.

Sail support: Like all RC activities model sailing is more fun with a group of boaters and it’s not hard to locate other sailing enthusiasts that might reside near your home. The American Model Yachting Association’s website features a nice club directory to help you pinpoint and contact fellow sailors in your area and you can also use the site to help look for any yacht hardware or racing rules that apply to your brand boat. Custom sails, servos, etc. are all found in the suppliers listing while the rules guidelines section will tell just what modifications on your hull should you decide to try your hand at sailboat racing. Many current RTR and kitted sailing hulls regularly compete throughout the country and the sport sailor can learn a lot of useful running tips from those who race the very same sail craft as the one bought by the beginner. The adaptability of most RC yachts make them fun because both the sport and competitive sailor alike can upgrade their hull’s setup to improve the boat’s on water performance and do it for only a small outlay from their RC budget.

SAIL POINTS • Always apply a drop of CA glue to each rigging cord knot to prevent any mast/sail spillage in breezy conditions.

• When rigging the hull lakeside, keep the boat out of direct winds or simply lay it on the grass to avoid a blow over.

• Remember, a setup sailboat doesn’t like to be anywhere near a running ceiling fan.

• Braided fishing line (with the same outside diameter) can be used to repair/replace any mast or sail lines.

• Be sure to take a folding chair to the lake because the average yacht can sail for a minimum of two hours.

• Since most of a sailboat’s weight is in the keel, carrying it by the lower keel will be the most stress-free way to launch/retrieve it at the lake.

How do remote control sailboats work?

Remote control sailboats work by using a radio transmitter and receiver. The radio transmitter allows the user to control the boat’s movements from a distance. On the boat, the radio receiver is connected to two battery-powered electric motors or servos which change the position of the boat’s sails or rudder. To control the boat’s speed or direction, the user sends signals to the transmitter which are then interpreted by the receiver and translated into instructions to change the position of the servos.

Model boat making: ‘It takes you to a different world. You can’t hear or see anything else’

‘you become totally absorbed in it,’ says ken finn whose passion for boats spans his whole life.

Ken Finn is chairman of the Dublin Radio Model Boat Club, which was founded in 1898 and is believed to be the longest continuously running model boat club in the world

Conor Capplis's face

In the early days of Dublin Radio Model Boat Club, we had more than 60 members, but now we’re down to a dozen or so. Young people nowadays don’t have the interest like there used to be. Which is sad really because it’s a great hobby. You can learn so much from it.

My name is Ken Finn, I’m 75 years of age and I make remote control model boats. My interest stemmed from my late parents. My dad was very good with his hands regarding carpentry and my mum was good with fine needlework and embroidery.

When I was very small I enjoyed putting together model aeroplane kits. I went from there to more advanced rubber band-powered models, and soon was building boats and planes from scratch. I love doing it – I love doing anything with my hands really.

For 42-odd years I worked in maintenance for spray paint machines. I enjoyed every minute of it. We were spraying all types of materials, from small models to big ships. I retired back in 2013. I really miss it though.

The stone carver who education left behind: ‘There was something f**king dying to get out of me’

In the latest instalment of our What I Do series, we meet model boat maker Ken Finn, whose passion for boats spans his whole life.

I keep busy these days by making model boats with the help of others in the club. Our boats are usually built from scratch or from a modified kit. If it’s a scratch-built boat, you’d buy all the wood and materials and build everything from the ground up. Then you just fit the radio gear, the electric batteries and off she goes.

I’m the chairman of the club and originally joined in the late 1970s. It was founded in 1898 and we believe it’s the longest continuously running model boat club in the world. At one stage we were out in Blackrock Park, then we used a lake at UCD Belfield for many years and now we’re in Herbert Park every Sunday morning.

In the park people love to come over, take photographs and talk to us about the boats. That in itself can be very rewarding. We used to have competitions when there were a good few of us down there: sailing boats, tugs, little cruising boats, etc. But lots of members have passed away now.

You become totally absorbed in it and you can hear or see nothing else

When we go down on a Sunday morning, we mainly talk about boating things, you know? There’s always somebody down there who would be only too pleased to give you a hand with the boat. One of the guys is a retired electrician, so he can be very useful. There is one gentleman in his late 80s, and he’s very active. And another aged 94 who’s into submarines. He’s been doing model boats since Adam was a boy, as they say. When I built a sub a couple of years ago, I got great help from him to balance it.

I have a model 1950s tugboat, and it so happened that one of our members worked on a full-scale one over in the UK many years ago and he was able to fill me in on the more detailed aspects of the model – little things that may not be on a plan. On that boat, I had a friend help me transfer the line drawings into shapes for the model frames. It can be very collaborative.

I could sit down to work on the model and the hours would go in, I wouldn’t even notice time passing. It takes you to a different world – a different dimension. You become totally absorbed in it and you can hear or see nothing else.

You generally buy the plywood or balsa wood, cut the frames and build it upside down on a building board. Then, using waterproof glue, you simply glue on the stringers that form a skeleton of the boat. You cut out the pieces from maybe a one-sixteenth of an inch of plywood – that’s what I used on the tug – and you glue that into the hull. Then you drill the hole for the propeller and the rudder, and flip it around on to a stand and build the rest.

We like to build as many fittings as we can. The fun is building them and getting little knick-knack bits here and there. I needed a foghorn once for a cabin, and the top of a superglue can was a perfect sample for that. If you need tyres to go around the edge of it, you would go into one of those pound shops, let’s say, buy a tractor or whatever and take the tyres off it. It’s just a matter of hunting around to find the right thing. – In conversation with Conor Capplis

Electric rv, revolutionizing the road trip: sealvans builds and sells electric caravan trailer boat combos.

Avatar for Scooter Doll

Is it a caravan camper trailer? Is it a boat? Does it have an electric motor ? A Turkish company called Sealvans is blending the lines of recreational mobility, designing and selling trailer boat combos that deliver a hybrid mix of travel by land and sea. Check them out.

Sealvans was founded in 2020 in Bursa, Turkey, by a team of engineers whose combined experience totals over 50 years in the automotive ands maritime segments. Built upon the idea of offering customers the freedom to have a home to inhabit in every bay, forest, city, or country, Sealvans took a unique design approach – amphibious caravan trailers that can double as a boat.

That quest began with the construction of two separate prototype models – a 4.2 meter (~14 feet) trailer boat and a 7.5 meter (~24.5 feet) version. By the summer of 2022, Sealvans had completed the builds alongside their respect R&D studies, paving the way (by road and sea) for a start of production and sales operations.

Today, Sealvans offers both trailer boat combos with a slew of customizable options , including an all-electric powertrain. Here are some images of the Seal 7.50M:

Sealvans to “break the limits” with trailer boat combos

As you’ll be able to see in the video from Sealvans below, its unique hybrid blend of caravan trailer and boat gives customers to tow their fifth wheel and camp out anywhere. Or, if the lake or sea beckons, those owners can back in, unhitch, and go for a cruise on the water.

Top comment by Michi Can

If they are going to leave the trailer tongue on it, they should have called it the "Narwhal".

It is cool that you don't need to see out of the boat while driving it apparently.

The larger of the two Seal trailer boats rides on two centrally located axles for land as part of a galvanized Al-co chassis, offering a transport capacity of 3,000kg (6,600 lbs). Its exterior features EU homologated galaxy dark-glazed glass and a panoramic windshield. There is also an optional collapsible sunroof.

For trips out on the water, the Seal features monoblock marine technology as an outer fiber around the entire vessel as well as stainless chrome accents throughout. The interior features artificial or genuine teak all around and all the necessities like an electric burner hob, an 18-liter fridge, and a two-compartment gas oven. Telescopic tables make room for shock-absorbing bed legs and orthopedic mattresses – one single and one double. The water-resistant bathroom comes equipped with a shower stall and marine-grade pump toilet.

While the trailer boat seen in the images and video is powered by a Honda gas motor, Sealvans does offer all-electric options, which include two inboard DC Pod Drive motors, an 8,960 Wh battery, and a 30Ah charger.

We’ve asked Sealvans for details on pricing and performance specs of the electric versions of the trailer boats, but have yet to hear back. As of June 2023, the Seal 4.50 started at an MSRP of 28,000 euros ($30,380) and the 7.50 cost 58,500 euros ($63,500) before any add-ons or additional options. While we await a response, here’s a video of the Seal in action on both land and water:

Check out Moscow’s NEW electric river trams (PHOTOS)

rc yacht sailing

Water transportation has become another sector for the eco-friendly improvements the Moscow government is implementing. And it means business. On July 15, 2021, on the dock of Moscow’s ‘Zaryadye’ park, mayor Sergey Sobyanin was shown the first model of the upcoming river cruise boat.

rc yacht sailing

The model of the electrical boat with panoramic windows measures 22 meters in length. The river tram - as Muscovites call them - has a passenger capacity of 42, including two disabled seats. The trams will also get cutting edge info panels, USB docking stations, Wi-Fi, spaces for scooters and bicycles, as well as chairs and desks for working on the go. The boats will be available all year round, according to ‘Mosgortrans’, the regional transport agency.

rc yacht sailing

Passengers will be able to pay with their ‘Troika’ public transport card, credit cards or bank cards.

The main clientele targeted are people living in Moscow’s river districts - the upcoming trams will shorten their travel time in comparison to buses and other transportation by five times, Mosgortrans stated.

rc yacht sailing

As the river trams are being rolled out, Moscow docks will also see mini-stations, some of which will also be outfitted with charging docks for speed-charging the boats.

rc yacht sailing

Moscow is set to announce the start of the tender for construction and supply in September 2021. The first trams are scheduled to launch in June 2022 on two routes - from Kievskaya Station, through Moscow City, into Fili; and from ZIL to Pechatniki.

rc yacht sailing

“Two full-scale routes will be created in 2022-2023, serviced by 20 river trams and a number of river stations. We’ll continue to develop them further if they prove to be popular with the citizens,” the Moscow mayor said .

They've been making the most of their time in Australia. On Thursday, Joe and Bree seemingly enjoyed the same boat ride around Sydney Harbor and shared an inside look at the excursion on their respective Instagram accounts.

On Joe’s Instagram Story , a short clip set to the tune of Hot Flash Heat Wave's "Trust" shows a sea plane gliding on the water in front of clear blue skies. He also included a BeReal shot of him and his brothers aboard the vessel.

Meanwhile, a similar view featured in the Jonas Brothers' Instagram Story (originally posted by Nick) could be seen on Bree’s Story . The model panned around the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House as Tame Impala’s “New Person, Same Old Mistakes” played in the first clip, followed by Troye Sivan’s “What’s the Time” in the second.

She also shared a series of photos on Instagram of her sipping a drink, snapping a selfie and soaking up the sun at the back of the boat. "🌊🥺🧃🏝️⚓️," she captioned the post.

Nick also posted a slightly more chaotic view of the trip, showing him being pummeled by sea spray at the back of the boat while he maintained his composure and sipped a drink.

Joe and Bree have been spotted on multiple occasions together since the singer filed for divorce from actress Sophie Turner , with whom he shares daughters Delphine , 19 months, and Willa , 3, in September.

In January, the two were photographed in Aspen, Colo. where they enjoyed a snowy ski trip with some friends. Before that, they were pictured side by side before boarding a private jet in Los Cabos, Mexico following the Jonas Brothers’ private performance there on New Year’s Eve.

A Motorboat as Cozy as a Woodland Cabin

Victoria Sass, an interior designer in Minneapolis, had long dreamed of owning an R.V. so she and her family could hit the open road with their living quarters attached.

“I grew up in Santa Cruz, California, with a Volkswagen van,” said Ms. Sass, 40, who had fond memories of traveling with her family in their mobile vacation home. She wanted her husband, Torben Rytt, and their three children, Duncan, 3, Irene, 8, and Walter, 13, to enjoy the same experience.

Mr. Rytt, who grew up outside Copenhagen, had other ideas: He wanted a sailboat.

“I’m from a boating family,” said Mr. Rytt, 45, a consultant for Nordic technology companies. “My parents met at a boat show, and we’ve owned boats since I was an infant. Every summer, we’d go sailing for five or six weeks.”

Mr. Rytt had no interest in an R.V.; Ms. Sass had no interest in a sailboat.

The blue-and-white motorboat on a river, with a forested hillside beginning to turn autumn colors behind it.

So Mr. Rytt offered a compromise: What if they bought a motorboat with a large cabin that held a kitchen, bathroom and sleeping quarters?

Think of it as an R.V. that just happens to float down rivers, he suggested, instead of rolling along roads.

Ms. Sass, who runs the design firm Prospect Refuge Studio , liked the idea, as long as she could customize the interior to make it as cozy as a woodland cabin.

It didn’t take long for Mr. Rytt to find their project boat: a 44-foot-long vessel from 1983 in nearby Red Wing, Minn., with a tiny kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and bunk room that needed some maintenance and love.

They bought it for $100,000 at the end of 2020 and moved it to their planned docking spot on the St. Croix River. The following spring, Mr. Rytt began taking lessons to learn how to pilot the boat, and they began their work to transform it.

They had the exterior of the boat repainted, changing it from maroon to sky-blue and white. They replaced the worn black awnings with new blue ones. Below deck, they tore out the grungy carpet, and Mr. Rytt spent an entire summer installing a new teak parquet floor. (There was existing teak wall paneling and cabinetry that they liked, so they cleaned and oiled the wood to refresh it.)

The more they worked, the more they realized that in such a compact space there was a reason for everything.

“Every picture and mirror on the wall was actually an access panel to something mechanical,” Ms. Sass said. “So if you replace something, it has to be replaced with something of the exact same size, which can be frustrating. It’s like every piece of trim is interconnected. Even the wallpaper is integral to the boat.”

Nevertheless, she was adamant about replacing the art on the walls. She was more flexible in the bathroom, where she kept the existing wallcovering, but recruited Kelsi Sharp, a graphic designer and sign painter, to give it tidy maroon-and-blue stripes.

For the kitchen, she worked with Kristen Falkirk to produce handmade black and mint-green ceramic tiles to resurface the counter and backsplash, giving the space a little wabi-sabi appeal.

For lighting, Ms. Sass mixed Danish nautical lights with a few designer favorites, including Rotonde X ceiling lamps with fabric shades from Roman and Williams Guild, which she mounted in the living room.

To furnish the boat, she mixed upscale pieces with budget finds, blasting everything with color and pattern. In the living room, she covered an Ikea sectional sleeper sofa with blankets from OddBird, piling on patterned pillows from Caravane, Goodee and St. Frank. For the floor, she bought a cushy wool rug from Beni Rugs.

“It’s super shaggy, which is totally impractical for a boat,” she said. “But I just think it’s fun.”

Because they were limited to working on the boat only in warmer months, it took three years to complete the overhaul, at a cost of about $250,000. They rechristened their vessel Freya, a play on the name of the Norse goddess Freyja that they hope is easier for non-Scandinavians to pronounce.

Now they use the boat not only on weekends, but also for multiweek voyages on the Mississippi River, traveling between river towns. It’s not quite the same as seeing sights from an R.V., but the whole family has fallen in love with life on the water. “Some days we just anchor out in the river, to get away from it all,” Ms. Sass said.

She no longer yearns for an R.V., and Mr. Rytt has abandoned all thoughts of a sailboat.

“The funny thing is that I actually prefer this over a sailboat,” he said. “It’s one of those things I don’t think I can ever get enough of. I could spend an infinite amount of time on this boat.”
