25 boats will cross the start line this weekend for Britain’s 2021 offshore racing season opener on the south coast of England, the race will be held under the sanction of the United Kingdom Offshore Powerboat Racing Association (UKOPRA) and is due to start at 12:30 on Sunday May 30 from Bournemouth Pier.

The Poole Bay 100 event has attracted an impressive line-up of Classes 1 and 2 entrants while Class 3C will be the most competitive category for the smaller craft.

RIBs in Class 1

Making their offshore racing debut in the top class will be Daniel and Shaun Bentley with Tom Yaldren.

The team will be racing an Artic Blue 37 RIB, a slightly unconventional choice, however, there is a good reason behind this.

They are currently in the process of fully restoring a 40′ Planatec, formally known as Double Two Shirts. Once they have finished fitting new Mercury power units to the GRP hull the hope is to use the Don Shead designed boat in the second round of the UKOPRA championship in Guernsey.

Pippa winning the Poole Bay 100 last year

Two other RIBs are on the entry list in Class 1, last year’s Poole Bay 100 winner, Pippa (above), will this year be crewed by Dan Smith and Jack Weller although missing from the cockpit will be Dan’s father Andy, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

Shelley Jory-Leigh, Dorian Griffith and Will Stevens have swapped their quiet diesel powered Fountain for the noisiest boat on the south coast, the trio have been testing their Ilmor powered Cougar on the Solent recently and have topped both the ton and the decibel readings in Southampton.

The RIB’s will be up against the Cigarettes of Christian Toll and Richard Carlton, Scott Younger and Rob Lockyer’s Dragon and another new team to the series, Gary Aldington and Nick Spenser, who will be racing the FB Design Vintage Torque.

3C was once the most popular offshore racing class in Britain, and six boats have signed-up for the rebooted discipline this season.

Glynn Norvall swiped right for Andy Hiscox

It will be a first time out for Rodney Hawkins and Darren Elliott in the UKOPRA championship series with the other teams established regulars including veteran racer Peter Clarke in a Mercury / Phantom package.

Father and son team, Thomas and Brian Pelham have entered their trusty Beaver Returns into 3E while in 3D, Glynn Norvall has recruited camping enthusiast and 2019 Guernsey Gold Cup winner, Andy Hiscox, for social media opportunities and some occasional navi-guessing.

The Class 4 boats will be racing over the same 71.4 nm course as the Class 3 competitors with the oldest boat in this section being the Bertram of Hugo Peel, Johnny Raymond and James Gaggero – Thunderstreak.

Yet another new team, brothers Marcus and James Dodd will be in a Mercury powered Chris Parsonage catamaran and father and daughter, Brian and Nicole Peedell, team-up with David Salter in Hell’s Angels, the Hunton that was raced by Fiona Gore, Countess of Arran.

The boats can be viewed at Poole Quay from Friday until Sunday where they will be scruitineered and the drivers will be briefed for the race.

There will be a shakedown practice on Saturday with a start time of 14:30 from Bournemouth Pier and the championship race is set for 12:30 on Sunday.

P1 Powerboat and Jet Ski racing to return to Bournemouth

  • Katy Stickland

The Grand Prix of the Sea race series will return to Bournemouth seafront on the weekend of 3-4 September. The season finale promises high speed action.

Visitors to Bournemouth next month can expect a feast of high speed action close to the pier when the Grand Prix of the Sea heads to the Dorset resort.

A fleet of 11 powerboats and more than 30 Jet Ski riders will be taking part in the competitions.

Prior to the racing in Cardiff over the August Bank Holiday , Pertemps Network is leading the pack on 186 points. Second place Experience Kissimmee will be hoping to chase down the 25 point gap that separates them from the leaders.

Quantum Racing currently lie in third with 144 points, while E: Marine Racing  are less than 10 points behind them on 136.

See the racing schedule below

This will be P1’s third visit in a row to Bournemouth.

Organisers say the growth and quality of the town’s free events programme plays a major role in selecting it as a host venue for the national championships.

The amphitheatre setting for spectators to watch the racing from the cliff top, beach and pier is also a draw.

Ahead of the final, the chief operating officer of Powerboat P1, Robert Wicks, said: “Our event is a festival of skill and power, with a headline double bill of close-to-shore powerboat and jet ski racing plus on-the-water displays and a parade of around 40 smart cars. It’s all about family entertainment and it’s free to watch.”

Organisers say P1’s partnership with the Bournemouth Coastal Business Improvement District (BID) is an important element in its wider event strategy and the race weekend introduces a new range of visitors to all that Bournemouth has to offer and helps to boost trade and increase footfall in the town.

Up to 30,000 people are expected to watch the two days of racing.

The general manager of the West Cliff Hallmark hotel and chairman of the Coastal BID, Paul Clarke,   said: “We are proud to host and support the event in Bournemouth for the third year.”

“It provides a superb showcase for the town through extensive media exposure, provides free entertainment for residents and visitors of all ages, and extends the tourism season into September to create local economic impact,” he added.

For those who can’t make the final in Bournemouth, the race action will be shown on Sky Sports and Motors TV in the UK.

ThunderCat Powerboat Racing Series returns to Bournemouth

ThunderCat Powerboat Racing Series returns to Bournemouth

Powerboats will be tearing through the waves at Bournemouth on 20th and 21st of May for the third and fourth rounds of the ThunderCat Racing Championships. The two-day event will see competitors from across the UK race in heats over a ‘M' shaped circuit course and then tackle a 50 mile ‘Enduro' race with laps between Bournemouth and Boscombe Piers.

ThunderCat Racing is one of the world's most exhilarating water sports. The primary purpose of a ThunderCat is surf racing and they race at high speeds in the surf of up to 5 metres and wind speeds up to 45 knots. Crews consist of a driver and a co-driver. The driver drives from the rear of the ThunderCat, while the co-driver uses his weight to adjust the trim of the boat. Surf racing usually takes place as close to the shoreline as possible, ensuring an amazing spectacle for those on the shore, and fabulous racing for drivers and co-drivers.

Currently, the series is led by the team of Rob Davies and Darren Phillips representing Magor Racing closely followed by the teams of Multispark Racing and Nationwide Vehicle Assistance

The event will be free for spectators to view and is one of the few sports where a spectator can get up close to the teams. Spectators will be able to watch the racing from a designated area on the beach or from Bournemouth and Boscombe piers. The close action also provides a great opportunity for budding photographers and video photographers to take shots of the spectacular action taking place.

There is also plenty of action taking part on shore with the Atlantic Freestyle Football Crew entertaining the crowds with Open, Sick 3 and Challenge competitions.

Racing will take place between 12 pm and 3 pm on Saturday, followed by the Enduro at 3.30pm. On Sunday, the heats will take place between 12 pm and 2.30pm, with the Enduro racing at 3 pm.

British Powerboat Racing Club

March 22, 2024

Home » About Us

powerboat race bournemouth

The British Powerboat Racing Club was formed in 2001 following the gala dinner held at the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes celebrating the 40th running of the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes offshore powerboat race.

The Cowes-Torquay launched offshore powerboat racing as a sport in Britain in 1961. Initially sponsored by the Daily Express newspaper, its success encouraged several countries in Europe and the Middle East to follow suit.

Hence it can rightly claim to have introduced offshore powerboat racing to the rest of the world outside the United States where the modern sport was launched with the first Miami-Nassau Race in 1956.

When the Union Internationale Motonautique, the world governing authority for powerboat racing, introduced the World Offshore Championship in 1967 as a memorial to Sam Griffith, the American founder of modern offshore racing, the course was found to be too short at 125 miles to qualify as a championship heat.

powerboat race bournemouth

The race format was therefore changed and instead of finishing at Torquay, the fleet returned non stop back to Cowes.

Membership of the British Powerboat Racing Club is open to anyone interested in powerboat competition, offshore racing in particular.

Almost 200 like minded enthusiasts, many ex-competitors from the early days of the sport, regularly meet for lunch and cocktail parties as well as attending the annual Cowes-Torquay-Cowes race to be held every year over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

A smaller group of its members form the race organising committee whose aim is to ensure this British classic continues.

The committee provides a secretariat, organisational help and liaison with the Royal Yachting Association, the British National Authority for all areas of powerboat sport.

UKOPRA MARATHON WORLD CHAMPION 2018

CLASS 1 OFFSHORE RACING

Offshore racing in the UK is a highly competitive and exciting sport that involves high-performance powerboats and attracts top teams and drivers from around the world. The sport is governed by two main organizations: the British Powerboat Racing Club (BPRC) and the UK Offshore Racing Association (UKOPRA).

The BPRC is responsible for organizing and promoting the races themselves, while the UKOPRA oversees the technical and safety aspects of offshore powerboat racing in the UK.

Class one vee powerboats are a popular type of powerboat used in offshore racing in the UK. These boats are designed for speed and maneuverability, and can reach speeds of up to 120 mph. They are typically piloted by a team consisting of a driver and a throttleman, who work together to control the boat’s speed and direction.

Offshore racing events in the UK featuring class one vee powerboats include the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes and Poole-Bournemouth-Poole races, as well as the Guernsey Gold Cup and the Falmouth Fowey race. These events are highly competitive and attract large crowds of fans and spectators.

Safety is a top priority in offshore racing with class one vee powerboats, and strict rules and regulations are in place to ensure the safety of the drivers, teams, and spectators. The boats are equipped with advanced safety features like roll cages, fire suppression systems, and emergency air supplies for the crew.

Experience the Thrill : Class 1 Vee Powerboat Racing

Governed by the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM), the sport’s international authority, Class 1 Vee racing adheres to stringent rules and regulations, covering everything from boat design to team requirements.Constructed with precision and safety in mind, these boats boast specific hull designs, cockpit layouts, and engine specifications. The driver focuses on steering, while the throttleman fine-tunes the boat’s power, adjusting the throttles accordingly.Racecourses, marked by buoys or other markers, challenge teams with multiple laps around 6-8 mile-long tracks. The length and difficulty of these courses can vary based on location and conditions, but one thing remains constant: sheer exhilaration.

Propelled by twin engines generating up to 1750 horsepower each, these powerboats can reach astonishing speeds of up to 120 mph. However, with great power comes great responsibility, and safety is paramount in Class 1 Vee racing. Advanced features like roll cages, fire suppression systems, and emergency air supplies keep the crew protected. Before joining the ranks of this high-octane sport, drivers and teams must undergo extensive training and certification. Venture Cup Prologue powerboat race proves a success

Cinzano wins overall in four-day race from London to the Channel Islands and back

The four-day Venture Cup Prologue offshore powerboat race between London and the Channel Islands will go down as a success despite tough sea conditions forcing organisers to terminate the first leg in Poole rather than Guernsey.

The event, which finished off Bournemouth on Tuesday, was used by organisers as a warm-up and testing ground for next year’s much larger and more ambitious Venture Cup London to Monte Carlo powerboat marathon.

With seven of the ten London starters still racing at the finish, a high ratio of finishers compared to many offshore events, it will doubtless be concluded that next year’s proposed race to the Mediterranean is achievable.

In the end the race became a close battle between individual classes with some lesser horsepower boats actually challenging the overall leaders. With an offshore event of this length such enthusiasm makes for exciting and unpredictable racing.

The fourth and final 71-mile leg back to Bournemouth was led for the most part by the joint American/Norwegian-entered Ilmor-powered 42ft (12.8m) Chief Warpath .

Recommended videos for you

The boat moved further and further ahead to finish more than half an hour in front of German Markus Hendricks aboard Cinzano and the Scorpion/Yanmar RIB Grey Ghost driven by Paul Glenister.

This latter pair ran across the Channel within a few yards of each other despite Grey Ghost being in a much smaller engine class.

An outstanding performance came from the 45-year-old HTS , winner of the first London to Monte Carlo race in 1972.

Although it was outclassed on speed and ran at the back of the fleet it reached the Channel Islands before retiring with fuel starvation – not bad for a boat which has spent the last 20 years in a museum.

Being a far more modern design than Cinzano it’s no surprise Warpath was the stronger contender although it lost time refuelling in Brighton on the first leg then incurred a time penalty for a rule infringement.

That time penalty hurt Warpath in the final standings, which saw Cinzano come out on top with an overall time over four legs of 12 hours, 53 minutes and 29 seconds, at an average speed of 49.93 knots.

powerboat race bournemouth

When the Club was founded by the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) in 1905, it was viewed as the marine section of motoring and was established to ‘encourage and foster the sport and industry of motor boating and yachting’.

From its early days, the RMYC has promoted the sport of offshore powerboat racing where average winning speeds have increased from 15.48 mph in 1906 to over 100 mph today. Some of the more popular events in recent history include the international Needles Trophy race as well as a fun event which has raised thousands for cancer charities.

Needles Trophy Race

The Needles Trophy Race carried World Championship, European Championship and British Championship status, making it one of the UK’s most prestigious annual events. It usually took place the weekend before the famous Cowes-Torquay-Cowes race, so that overseas competitors could make the most of their visit to the UK by entering both races.

The first race in 1967 was won for Great Britain by the Hon. Edward Greenall in  Gee  (pictured below)  and over the years it attracted competitors from around the world including the USA, Italy, France, Monaco, Sweden, South Africa and Argentina.

Camden Trophy Race

The Camden Trophy was presented to the Club in 1966 by the Marquess Camden who was the Club’s Rear Admiral from 1963-1979 and Vice-Admiral from 1979 to 1984. The race was open to ‘Class III’ and ‘National Cruisers’ offshore powerboats and was one of the qualifying races in the British Championship series.

Cancer Research Race

The first Cancer Research Race was held in 1975 as a memorial to John Bonham Christie, a prominent RMYC member who died of cancer. This ‘basic’ race – which consisted of four laps of a 10-mile course in Poole Bay – appealed to people with all sorts of boating interests from 50hp outboard ski boats through to the largest and fastest offshore powerboats.   Most importantly, everyone raced as equals which gave newcomers the opportunity to have a go at offshore powerboat racing.

Over the years the event has raised tens of thousands of pounds to support cancer charities. Money was raised in several ways. Competitors were sponsored by friends and family – some of them raising more than £1000 per race. Their fund-raising was also boosted by donations over the weekend, plus a post-race auction or tombola with some stunning prizes.

Brass Monkey Race

During the 1990’s and the early part of the 21 st  century, the RMYC decided to break up the long winter months with the Brass Monkey Race which took place in February.

It took place on the same weekend at the RYA’s annual Powerboat Awards event which was held at the Royal Bath Hotel in Bournemouth – so most of the competitors were in the area anyway! It was open to all classes and usually attracted a fleet of a dozen boats, despite the fact that dry suits and thermals replaced the competitors’ more traditional wet suits and race overalls!

The motorboat that never was!!

Club member, John Walker, has recently spent two years investigating the story of Idaho – which he has described as the boat that never was.  Read his fascinating story here:
