Nikita Mazepin’s Family Yacht Vanished After Being Seized in Italy

Owen Bellwood Avatar

Since March, Russian private yachts that dock in ports around the world risk being seized and sold off in an attempt to encourage the country’s rich and powerful to pressure Putin into ending his assaults. So far, we can’t be sure if it’s a tactic that’s working.

But, it has meant that ships owned by Russian oligarch and former KGB operative Sergei Chemezov, businessman Alexei Mordashov and maybe even Putin himself have so far been seized by global powers.

Now, our favourite awful F1 driver and oligarch son, Nikita Mazepin , has had his family’s luxury liner seized in Italy. But, there’s a twist in this tale, as the boat has vanished!

Nikita Mazepin’s Family Yacht Vanished After Being Seized in Italy

According to The Guardian , the 22-metre long Aldabra was owned by Nikita Mazepin’s father, Dmitry Mazepin – the billionaire owner of mineral fertiliser Uralkali, which sponsored the Haas F1 team in 2021. The Guardian reports:

“The vessel, said to be worth between €700,000 ($US743,000 ($1,031,433)) and €1m, was docked at Olbia port and seized in March when Mazepin was named on the sanctions list in the weeks following the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “It remained there until June, when the yacht disappeared hours before it was officially confirmed as belonging to Mazepin.”

Presumably, they were able to confirm the ship as belonging to the Mazepins as “Nikita Woz Ere” was scrawled on the dock after the ship vanished. But, what happened to the ship next?

According to police in Italy, Dmitry Mazepin hired a foreign company, which then appointed a Sardinian captain to sail the yacht out of Italy. Once it left Italian waters, the ship reportedly made a stopover at the small port of Biserta in Tunisia. After that, its whereabouts become unknown.

The Mazepins also own a luxury villa in Sardinia, which has also been seized by the authorities. Its whereabouts, however, remain known.

The Guardian reports that it’s the first case of a Russian with assets frozen in Italy managing to dodge the EU sanctions. If the ship is ever recovered, Mazepin, the company he hired to move the ship, and the Sardinian captain will all face fines of up to €500,000 for “illegally removing the vessel from Italy.”

Italy seeks Russian oligarch whose seized yachts disappeared from Sardinia

Dmitry Mazepin’s vessels, both called Aldabra, went missing within weeks of each other last summer

  • Russia-Ukraine war – latest news updates

Italian authorities are on the hunt for a Russian oligarch after two of his luxury yachts that were seized under EU sanctions mysteriously disappeared from a port in Sardinia.

A public notice informing Dmitry Mazepin, the billionaire owner of a mineral fertiliser company, of the penalties against him over the alleged illegal removal of the vessels has been issued by the town hall of Forte dei Marmi, the Tuscan coastal resort where the oligarch owns a home.

The yachts, both called Aldabra but featuring maritime flags of two different countries, went missing from the Sardinian port of Olbia within weeks of each other last summer.

They were seized last March after Mazepin, who is the father of the former Formula One driver Nikita Mazepin, was named on the sanctions list a few weeks after the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine .

It is the first case in Italy of a Russian with assets frozen in the country who has managed to dodge EU sanctions.

An investigation led by Olbia’s finance police found that the first vessel, said to be worth between €700,000 and €1m (between £613,000 and £876,000), left Olbia in June and made a stopover at the small port of Bizerte in Tunisia.

The second yacht is known to have left Olbia for Savona, a port in the northern Italian region of Liguria, before heading to Turkey. The current whereabouts of the yachts and their owner is unknown.

Police said Mazepin hired a foreign company, which in turn hired a Sardinian captain to move the yachts away from Italy .

The intermediary company and captain have both been hit with fines of up to €500,000. Mazepin faces the same penalties.

A police source said that he is fiscally resident in Forte dei Marmi, a popular destination for Russian oligarchs before the war in Ukraine, as he owns a villa in the town, hence why the notice was issued there.

A villa in Sardinia owned by Mazepin is also among the Russian-owned assets frozen across the island. Mazepin bought the villa, called Rocky Ram, from Carlo De Benedetti, an Italian businessman and former owner of La Repubblica newspaper.

Italy Seizes a $114 Million Compound Belonging to Ousted F1 Driver Nikita Mazepin’s Family

In March, with the start of the Formula One season approaching and the Russian invasion of Ukraine just beginning, the U.S.-owned team Haas had a decision to make about one of its two drivers. Nikita Mazepin is the son of the Russian oligarch Dmitry Mazepin, who was effectively bankrolling the team through his fertilizer company Uralkali. The elder Mazepin has been described by the European Union, in its announcement of sanctions against him, as “a member of the closest circle of Vladimir Putin .”

Formula One ultimately canceled its scheduled Grand Prix in Russia, and Haas ended its relationship with both of the Mazepins. When the season began, the team’s car no longer sported neither the colors of the Russian flag nor the Uralkali name. Nikita Mazepin didn’t take the news too well. “I am a young man and I was not ready for it,” he told Sky Sports last month, adding, “I lost my dream, which I have been working towards for 18 years.” More recently, he described the sanctions against him as an element of “cancel culture against my country” in an interview with the BBC, echoing Putin’s own line on the matter.

The complaints from the billionaire’s son didn’t garner much sympathy, and sanctions against Russian oligarchs have continued. On Monday, Italy seized his and his father’s eye-popping $114 million compound in Sardinia.

“A real estate asset worth approximately 105 million euro has been frozen,” Italian financial police told CNN in a statement, “because the property is attributable to the Russian billionaire Dmitry Arkadievich Mazepin and his son Nikita Dmitrievich Mazepin, until March 5 a Formula 1 driver of the Haas F1 Team.” Nikita Mazepin’s manager told the outlet that neither he nor his father wished to comment. As Reuters noted , in recent weeks, Italy has sequestered more than 900 million euros worth of villas and yachts owned by E.U.-sanctioned Russians.

Haas’s relationship with the Mazepins made for one of the more absorbing storylines in the most recent season of Drive to Survive, the Netflix reality series about Formula One that, particularly among American audiences, has propelled the sport to new heights of recognition over the past few  years. At a particularly combustible moment for global sports—the Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich recently announced his intention to sell Chelsea F.C. amid scrutiny of his own links to Putin—the Mazepin fallout and ensuing sanctions have underscored how closely the sport, arguably the fastest-growing in the world, is tied to matters of geopolitical concern.

“We had really good relations with Nikita and Uralkali,” Haas team owner Gene Haas told ESPN in March. “They were a great sponsor. They provided much-needed capital.”

“We really tried to make this thing work,” he went on. “But when you saw the media pictures of people just being bombed and shot at, this wasn't going to work.”

Russian F1 driver Nikita Mazepin has $114m properties seized in Italy

Italy has seized properties worth some €105 million ($114.45 million) owned by Russian former Formula One driver Nikita Mazepin and his oligarch father.

The operation targeted a villa -- known as Rocky Ram -- located in the north of the island of Sardinia. It is part of broader efforts aimed at penalising wealthy Russians linked to President Vladimir Putin after the Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine by Moscow.

Mazepin -- who was fired in March by U.S.-owned F1 team Haas -- has been included in an EU sanctions list along with his father, Dmitry, who the European Union's official journal described as a member of president Vladimir Putin's closest circle.

Over the last weeks, Italian police have sequestered villas and yachts worth over €900 million from wealthy Russians who were placed on a European Union sanctions lists following the Ukraine conflict.

The most valuable asset seized so far is a superyacht owned by billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko, worth around 530 million euros, which was impounded in the northern port of Trieste.

Mazepin's PR manager has been approached for comment by Reuters.

Ousted F1 Driver Nikita Mazepin on Retirement: ‘Drink, Party on Yacht, Sleep It Off, Repeat’

Today’s lesson on Russian Oligarchy 101.

F1 photo

DrivesWGirls

Former Russian Formula 1 driver Nikita Mazepin is the kind of guy who feels like he wholeheartedly believes his father's affluence has earned him the right to do whatever he wants, when he wants, and how he wants it. From recording himself sexually attacking women and sharing it on social media , falsely blaming his on-track mistakes on an outdated F1 chassis (and having dad buy him a new one), to—my favorite—failing to see how Haas could no longer accept Putin-derived money in exchange for his seat, Mazepin lives in a world where he's the alpha male and everyone else must deal with it. Now we can add retirement advice to the list of things the 23-year-old is an expert on.

Mazepin took to Instagram to share his own five-stage process on how to deal with retiring from F1, a post which he dedicated to fellow racers Sebastian Vettel , Daniel Ricciardo , Mick Schumacher , and Nicholas Latifi, all of whom drove their last F1 race at Sunday's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. And while I'm sure Mazepin believes he's watching out for his buds, it's just so silly to think that drivers with monumentally more experience would consider taking advice from the ousted rich kid who only drove for one season and crashed out at most races. Then again, this is unsurprising of someone who carries themselves as a sort of modern-day Romanov.

F1 photo

"Nice to be here [Abu Dhabi] as a guest and see old friends. Got me thinking about some words of wisdom I can share with Seb [Vettel], Daniel [Ricciardo], Nicky [Latifi], and Mick [Schumacher] as they get ready to move on. So, here’s what awaits you in the 5 stages of departing the stable:

  • Stage 1: Denial. You will find yourself driving circles around your apartment building. Don’t make the mistake I made – turn on your stopwatch. It’s entirely possible that another F1 team will be interested in your results and you won’t have to endure the next 4 stages.
  • Stage 2: Anger. You blame everyone but yourself for having to leave F1. Particularly the “Drive to Survive” film crew. You watch the races obsessively and yell at the screen.
  • Stage 3: Bargaining. You hold a press conference where you put on a brave face and thank the team principal who fired you in hopes that your cheerful smile and natural charm will get you a seat with a new team.
  • Stage 4: Depression. Drink, party on yacht, sleep it off, gain 5 kilos. Repeat on endless loop. This will not be an easy stage to get through, but your friends will enjoy it.
  • Stage 5: Acceptance. Congratulations. You’ve reached the final Grand Prix of being shown the exit. You stop obsessing about F1 and start thinking about your next steps.. while keeping yourself in shape and keeping the door open for a return!"

If you're a college professor and were looking for the perfect piece of real-world content for your "Oligarch 101" or "Understanding the Juniors of the Russian Oligarchy," course, there you have it. You're welcome.

Despite his egotistical tirade, Mazepin's got a point about dealing with the frustration of getting ousted from the sport. It can't be fun and it's definitely not enjoyable to suddenly find yourself not able to do the activity you've dedicated most of your short life to. Regardless, I don't believe anyone's feeling bad for Mazepin , especially given his father's ties to the Russian government and its invasion of Ukraine that continues to claim so many lives every single day.

But, you know, why deal with the gruesome reality when you can just drink, party on a yacht, sleep it off, gain five kilos, and repeat it all over again?

Italy seizes villa of Russian Formula 1 driver Mazepin

nikita mazepin yacht

Rome, Apr 11 (EFE).- The Italian police on Monday seized properties in Sardinia owned by Russian former Formula 1 driver Nikita Dmitrievich Mazepin and his oligarch father valued at more than 100 million euros (about $109 million), Italian government sources confirmed.

“A preventive seizure order was executed against Dmitri Arkadievich Mazepin and his son Nikita Dmitrievich Mazepin, regarding the villa” known as Rocky Ram and located in the village of Porto Cervo, in northern Sardinia, the sources said.

The operation was carried out by the Finance Guard – Italy’s financial police – and is part of the effort by Italian authorities to sanction Russian oligarchs linked to President Vladimir Putin within the framework of the European Union sanctions on Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24.

Both Mazepins – senior and junior – had been placed on the EU sanctions list.

Italian police in recent weeks have seized several villas and yachts valued at more than 900 million euros from Russian multimillionaires who have been sanctioned by the EU, including a yacht belonging to Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko valued at more than 500 million euros.

Nikita Mazepin on March 5 had his contract canceled by the US-owned Haas Formula 1 team, a result of the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine and the EU punishment being implemented against Russia on multiple levels.

Russia’s conflict with Ukraine brought a world of trouble for the Russian oligarchs. Among them was fertilizer magnate and former sponsor of F1 team Haas , Dmitry Mazepin. Such tight was Dmitry’s noose over the team that he got his son Nikita Mazepin one of the two seats. However, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Dmitry, like many other oligarchs, was hit with sanctions by the EU. Resultantly, he had to bow out of the team with his son. In the latest development, Dmitry has gone missing with two of his yachts that were seized by the authorities.

Italian authorities are currently on the lookout for Dmitry Mazepin, who disappeared with his two yachts that were seized last summer. The two seized yachts went missing within weeks, one after the other. $1.8 billion worth Mazepin (as per Celebrity Net Worth), who owns a house in Forte dei Marmi, is the first Russian Oligarch who has evaded the EU sanctions in Italy.

Nikita Mazepin still eyeing an F1 comeback

Ever since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Nikita and Haas went their own different ways. Both succeeded in what they were looking for. While Haas found sponsors to keep them afloat in the championship, Nikita continued his journey in motorsports. Even better, he competed in the  2022 Silk Way Rally in the SSV class and won. However, that wasn’t enough for the Russian pilot.

Have You Seen Dmitry Mazepin's Vanishing Yachts, Because Italy Would Love to Know

The government also wouldn't mind a chat with the oligarch himself, as he faces more than $540,000 in fines for removing seized vessels from the country..

At right Dmitry Mazepin, father of former Formula 1 driver Nikita Mazepin and owner of Uralkali, previously the title sponsor of the Haas F1 Team, sits across from Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting in Moscow on November 23, 2022.

Last summer, two yachts thought to be owned by Russian fertilizer oligarch and worst-kind-of-sports-parent Dmitry Mazepin disappeared from the port of Olbia off the Italian island of Sardinia. They had been seized in March, pursuant to European Union sanctions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but local officials weren’t able to immediately tie the vessels to their owner. Both boats vanished three months later within days of each other — and suspiciously mere hours before police confirmed they belonged to Mazepin.

Wouldn’t you know the Italian government would really love to speak with the billionaire, according to the latest from the Guardian . This week Mazepin was issued a notice of the roughly $540,000 he faces in fines by the Forte dei Marmi town hall, where he also owns a house.

The ships — both named Aldabra, presumably to make this case just that little bit more annoying for law enforcement — supposedly went off in different directions. One set sail for Tunisia, while the other headed toward Northern Italy, then Turkey. Their current whereabouts are unknown.

As for how Mazepin arranged the whole thing, Italian officials have an idea about that, too. Courtesy the Guardian :

Police said Mazepin hired a foreign company, which in turn hired a Sardinian captain to move the yachts away from Italy.

That villa was seized too, as it’s slightly more challenging to hide than seafaring craft. I’d love to hear Mazepin’s son, disgraced Formula 1 driver Nikita Mazepin, relate his assuredly noncommittal stance on these matters. Hell, I’d love to hear him say anything at all. His mouth proved to be an endless well of entertainment through the early part of last year and it’s been too long since he opened it near a microphone.

Court ruling results in lifting of EU sanctions on Mazepin

A court decision made on Wednesday said that the European Union (EU) couldn’t justify keeping Nikita Mazepin, a former Haas F1 racer, on a list of people facing sanctions because Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

Before, Mazepin and his father Dmitry were singled out for restrictive measures, like freezing funds and bans from entering EU countries. This happened right after Haas dropped Mazepin from their team just before the 2022 season due to the invasion.

Mazepin, who’s now racing in the Asian Le Mans Series, has been trying to get off sanction lists worldwide, but without success.

But now, the EU has changed its mind. They said there wasn’t enough evidence to link Mazepin to his father’s actions beyond family ties. Even though his father’s company, Uralkali, sponsored Mazepin’s racing before, it doesn’t matter now that he’s not with Haas anymore.

The General Court issued a statement, saying that putting Mazepin on the sanctions list just because of his father was a mistake. They argued that there wasn’t enough proof of a connection beyond family ties.

Mazepin welcomed this decision, but it’s unlikely to change much for his chances of returning to Formula 1.

Italy Seizes Another Russian Oligarch’s Precious Villa

Italian financial police have seized a seaside villa called Rocky Ram in Sardinia belonging to Russian Formula One driver Nikita Mazepin and his oligarch dad.

ROME—Italian police have added another stunning villa to their collection of sequestered Russian properties after seizing the so-called Rocky Ram belonging to former Formula One driver Nikita Dmitrievich Mazepin and his father, the chemical baron Dimitry Mazepin, on Monday.

The property, valued at around $115 million, sits on a cliff overlooking Sardinia’s rocky Paradise Beach coast and boasts some of the most expansive views of the turquoise waters and famous red rocks on the island. The nearest town is Porto Cervo, where, until Russia invaded Ukraine, a string of Russian superyachts were moored. Most moved out in mid-February.

Mazepin was dismissed by the U.S.-owned Formula One Hass team in March after being named on the European Union sanction list with his father—they jointly own the property, which was reportedly obtained with the help of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, whose erstwhile pal Vladimir Putin was a frequent visitor to the area . The elder Mazepin is a member of Putin’s inner circle and has been photographed on Berlusconi’s property by Italian paparazzi over the years. Mazepin’s Uralkali firm was also booted as a team sponsor by Hass when he was added to the sanctions list. The former driver was listed as a “person associated with a leading businessperson involved in economic sectors providing a substantial source of revenue to the government of the Russian Federation.”

Mazepin blamed his firing from Hass on “cancel culture” and has been outspoken about sanctions. “I don’t agree with being in sanctions and I’ve said previously that I intend to fight it,” the younger Mazepin told the BBC. “Perhaps now is not the right time because if you look at the whole situation that’s happening against athletes in the general case, it’s cancel culture against my country.”

Italian police have seized nearly $1 billion worth of Russian-owned villas, yachts, and art since sanctions began in early March after Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. The most expensive booty so far is Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko’s superyacht, valued at $575 million and now impounded in Trieste, according to Reuters.

Netflix’s Drive to Survive is great in that it tells the stories of drivers you may otherwise not have known about.

All of a sudden, you’re paying attention to who comes in eighth, rather than just the podium finishes.

It also shines a light on people like Nikita Mazepin, for example, and the ridiculous story of how his dad essentially bought him a spot on the track when he sponsored Haas via his company, Uralkali.

Dmitry Mazepin, Nikita’s billionaire father, is back in the news after his luxury yacht, Aldabra, vanished into thin air. It had been seized under EU sanctions but has now disappeared from a port on the Italian island of Sardinia.

The Guardian reports:

The vessel, said to be worth between €700,000 (£605,000) and €1m, was docked at Olbia port and seized in March when Mazepin was named on the sanctions list in the weeks following the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It remained there until June, when the yacht disappeared hours before it was officially confirmed as belonging to Mazepin. “Mazepin knew he was on the list but managed to make the most of the period during which we were working to establish that the boat belonged to him, as we had to investigate the chain of ownership,” said a source at Sardinia’s financial police squad. “We were in the process of confirming [the ownership] when it was taken away.”

It’s believed that Mazepin employed a foreign company to move the yacht, which then hired a Sardinian captain.

The last time the yacht was seen, it was making a stopover in Tunisia.

Their dads didn’t buy their spots, pal. Maybe sit this one out.
