Il piacere di vestirsi dal 1979

In questa foto ingiallita del 1952, la signora Concetta è ritratta con alcuni dei suoi 7 figli mentre accompagna il capofamiglia, il marito Antonio Bruno sulle vie che da Satriano di Lucania lo conducevano alle fiere e ai mercati dei paesini lucani. Erano anni di sofferenze per la nostra terra, di forte emigrazione, e mentre molti partivano in cerca di lavoro, Antonio Bruno, classe 1910, detto “U SGGIAR” scommetteva sulla Basilicata e sul commercio. Nella stessa foto ci sono due ragazzini che indossano pantaloncini corti e camicia bianca. Il più alto tra i due si chiama Michele e ha 5 anni. E’ Michele che, forte degli insegnamenti del padre e di quell’audacia che accompagna tutte le storie più belle, nel 1979 fonda la MB Bruno Moda. Il suo sogno, oggi come allora, è quello di invitare tante persone al piacere di vestire. Oggi l’attività è passata di generazione. Domenico il secondo dei cinque figli ne ha preso le redini.

9 impressive new yachts coming to a marina near you in 2024

Theo Stocker headed to Germany to see all of the best new yachts coming to harbours near you in 2024

Mid-winter on the banks of the Rhine might seem like an incongruous time and place for a boat show, but boot Düsseldorf, held for 10 days every January, remains the world’s largest, housed snugly in 17 vast halls.

Two of these are dedicated to sailing boats alone; there’s another hall for charter and marinas; two more for kit, clothing and equipment; another for beach sports; another for diving; and then a few halls for motor boats, from inflatable tenders to flamingo pedalos and all the way up to superyachts.

It’s little wonder that the show is a mecca for sailors from all over the world. Oh, and the old town’s cobbled streets, with their traditional beer cellars and excellent food – not least the obligatory pork knuckle – make for a thoroughly enjoyable weekend on the Continent.

All shapes and sizes

At least a dozen new boats I’d not seen before were at the show, and we’ll be having a look aboard over the next few pages. Some of the boats on show have been previewed in YM before, while others were totally new. Things were undoubtedly quieter than in the post-Covid boom, but new models across the full range of sizes proved there’s still life in the market.

Boot Düsseldorf is a useful bellwether as to current trends and it’s clear that many yards continue to pursue the top end of the market, as demonstrated by the Hallberg-Rassy 69, Arcona 50, Xc47 and the Moody DS48.

In the mid section of the market, high-volume hulls and ever-fuller bow sections remain the order of the day, with the Dufour 44, Beneteau Oceanis 37.1 and Jeanneau’s Sun Odyssey 350 all new for this year.

There’s a healthy amount of innovation happening among smaller cruising yachts too – an area largely ignored by the big brands, leaving space for smaller yards and innovative ideas, including Saffier’s sporty SE 24 Lite, Sunbeam’s ultra-modern 29.1, the Flaar 24, and Swallow Yacht’s surprisingly affordable Bay Cruiser 21, as well as a couple of more left-field ultra-stylish weekenders.

Plans announced

Besides the ready-built boats, new plans were unveiled, revealing some of the new boats we might expect to see at shows over the next year or two. Swedish yard Faurby, which builds fibreglass cruising yachts with hand-finished solid wood and semi-custom interiors, floated its concept for a Mark 2 version of its 460, as well as a new concept for a 430 – essentially using the same hull as the 460, but with the overhangs aft reduced. Saare Yachts is also planning a 47-footer as a new flagship.

I tested the Pointer 30 recently and found her to be a thoroughly capable and lively boat. Plans have been revealed for a more conventional ‘lounge’ version, in which the forward heads, galley and coffee table to port are changed for a larger forward cabin, straight settees in the saloon, and an aft galley and heads either side of the companionway at the expense of the two large quarter-berths.

Over in France, RM Yachts is in the process of building its first 1080 – a cruising boat with Class 40 ideas – and Wauquiez is back under new ownership with bold plans for an all-new Wauquiez 55 – a blue-water cruiser with a remarkable aft cabin and some fresh thinking on deck and below.

X-yachts Xc47 & Arcona 50 comparison

Two particular yachts making their debut at the show looked more like a Scandinavian derby than any others at the show. Rivals X-Yachts and Arcona were going head to head with two similarly sized boats both aiming at the 45-50ft blue-water cruising market.

Both the Xc47 and Arcona 50s aim at the performance end of the offshore cruising sector, and are built to similarly high levels of construction, quality, comfort and finish. I’ve covered the Arcona 50 in these pages for you before, and hope to test her in due course, but it’s worth taking a second look, given that she’s just won the coveted 2024 European Yacht of the Year Luxury Cruiser category.

For X-Yachts this is the first all-new boat since the retirement of X-yachts founder Nils Jeppessen, albeit drawn by the same in-house design team. The boat is intended as an offshore cruising boat, built for good passage speeds in comfort and safety.

Commensurately, she’s heavier with a bigger rocker and deep v-shaped bow sections than the Pure and Performance ranges, and she retains the same distinctive stern overhangs as other boats in the Xc (X-Yachts cruising) range, all of which contributes to sea-kindly motion. She’s still got X-Yachts blood in her though, and will keep moving in 5 knots of breeze, as well as enjoying cruising speeds into the the eights and nines.

Unusually, this is the first X-Yacht with a deck-saloon style coachroof (though not a true deck saloon), matching distinctive diamond-shaped hull windows. Below, every inch of space is used for well thought out stowage and systems, with her epoxy hull and steel keel matrix frame ensuring an incredibly stiff hull.

ARCONA 50 Having won European Yacht of the Year 2024, the new flagship seems to have hit the spot

Over at Arcona, Urban Langneus was on the hunt for a designer to replace the late Stephan Quivberg, and who should pop up but a newly retired Nils Jeppesen looking for projects to fill his time alongside partner in crime Ariadna Pons. The result was a new flagship for the Swedish yard – the 46 was their largest boat before this).

It represents a significant departure from the understated, but sharp, fast coastal performance cruisers in favour of a boat capable of carrying a high payload without sacrificing sailing ability. Displacement is just over a tonne and half lighter than the Xc47 with nearly 20m2 more canvas.

The hull shape is dramatically fuller than earlier Arconas, and sports twin rudders for the first time, but she claims to have lost none of Arcona’s typical performance or precision on the water. Below, the design is luxurious, comfortable, and fully up to date, without eschewing any Arcona craftsmanship.

Swallow Yachts Bay Cruiser 21

Over the years, Swallow Yachts have carved out a particular niche for themselves. Built in ply or GRP and coupled with powerful sail plans and carbon masts, their hard-chined hulls are instantly recognisable.

Combining a traditional sheerline with some touches of modernity, particularly the Bay Cruiser 26, and the their new 32-footer, the plans of which are still waiting for a customer, though more often, they are superficially fairly conservative. It’s under the surface, as well as aloft, that you find the innovation in these clever little trailer sailers.

The Bay Cruiser 21 is no different. Effectively a beefed-up version of the yard’s most popular model, the 20-foot Bay Raider Expedition, this boat is only one foot longer, but has significantly more waterline length as well as higher freeboard and more beam. This supports a bigger and more efficient sailplan, allows for side decks that you can walk forward on securely, a decent height cockpit coaming to lean back against, and the same, vast self-draining cockpit.

Below the cockpit sole is a water ballast tank adding 400kg to her righting moment; the boat can still be sailed without it, even in a stiff breeze if you like dinghy sailing, but from around Force 4 the ballast may be appreciated. This also makes her fully self-righting from 90º if the worst were to happen, while allowing her towing weight to be a mere 600kg – easily within the limits of most ordinary family cars.

This 29.1 is about stepping aboard, turning on the electrics and having a boat that’s ready to go in an instant

Sunbeam 29.1

We recently covered the plans for this little sister of the all-new Sunbeam 32.1, which I tested a few months ago, but this is the first time I had seen the 29.1 in person. While Sunbeam Yachts has been a family-run business for generations, former iterations of these pretty Austrian boats were conservative and relied on their sailing prowess to attract customers. They also catered for cruising sailors with boats up to 46ft.

The latest of the Schöchl family to run the business is Andreas, who believes that most boats are too unremarkable and boring to stand out, and there was a market for customers who want something striking, without being an out-and-out racing boat.

Vast hull-window panels make for a striking look and plenty of light below

Testing the latest generation of high-volume cruising boats, I’ve been surprised to find just how satisfying they are to sail, and how well they handle chop. Wide hulls and chines make for a more powerful hull while keeping the waterline narrow and a decent ‘V’ in the forefoot, and bringing this beam into the bow balances the boat, and helps keep the rudder gripping the water.

The Dufour 44, in replacing the 430, takes this concept further again, with some of the strongest bow chines on show. Umberto Felci has maintained performance by sticking with a decent deep single rudder, tucked forwards to avoid aeration, and a deep keel prioritising keeping the boat upright rather than anchoring close in to the beach.

In fact, this boat is happiest sailing at 15-18º of heel (my old early 1980s boat didn’t start moving forward until she heeled to 25-30º). Five hull windows adorn each side, partially disguised in the distinctive black panels set into moulded recesses.

As ever with Dufour, there is also a strong emphasis on comfortable living on board, and the deck layout feels like a boat for the sunshine. A relatively high cockpit sole and low coach roof gives amazing all-round views, while a central table (housing a fridge) provides bracing in the wide cockpit.

The Sun Odyssey range takes on a number of performance-enhancing ideas from the sportier Sun Fast boats

Jeanneau SO 350

Jeanneau’s long-running Sun Odyssey range has now gradually been updated into this, its eighth generation. The Sun Odyssey 349 sold 2,500 hulls but after 12 years of service it was due for replacement.

The 350 follows her older siblings with a wide hull (15cm beamier – widest in her class), more volume, an aft-raked stem and sharp hull chines, all the way to the bow. Step-free access to the deck is via a ramp aft of the wheels up onto the side deck which, amazingly, doesn’t steal any useable space from the aft cabins.

Keel options remain the same, making this boat unique in offering winged shoal-draught and lifting keels as well as standard options. A 29hp engine is now standard – and the only option – where this was an upgrade on the 349 from the standard 19hp.

Twin rudders and a performance pack should make this a fun boat to sail

Beneteau Oceanis 37.1

Much like Jeanneau, Beneteau’s Oceanis range has been a stalwart for decades and we’re now onto the seventh generation of these boats. The 37.1 takes the place of the 38.1 but continues to focus on fun, easy sailing and comfortable living, especially life on deck in the sunshine, where the Jeanneaus focus a little more on sailing performance.

Twin rudders ensure there’s decent grip on the water. You can also opt for a performance pack, which gives you a square top main thanks to the backstayless rig.

The beam remains the same width as the old boat, but this is carried further down to the waterline thanks to the ubiquitous hull chine, making the topside more or less vertical, which allows the accommodation to be pushed out wider.

The DS48 promises satisfying sailing with a reassuring heavy displacement

Indulge me. I know £1.5million is a lot of money, but this boat is unlike any other cruising boat on sale at the moment. The DS48 spares no expense, ensuring that this is the most comfortable home from home you can have, save buying an actual house.

Joining the family alongside the DS41, DS45 and DS54, the DS48 shares the Bill Dixon-designed DNA and one-level living, save for one or two steps between deck and cockpit, and saloon and cabins.

Like on a cat, the saloon really is up at deck level with 360º views through tempered glass windows. On deck, the cockpit is sheltered beneath a targa-top, with two steps up to the twin helms, where you’ll find buttons to control every winch and system, whichever wheel you’re at. From there, waist-high solid guard rails top the deep bulwarks, forward to the seating area in the bow.

Below, past the on-deck grill and fridge, the vast cockpit lockers that also house the washer-dryer. Slide aside the glass door and you’re into a big galley, complete with double sink, fridges, freezer and dishwasher, and an opening sash window to the cockpit.

The new flagship is Hallberg-Rassy’s largest ever yacht

Hallberg-Rassy 69

Go big or go home? Well Magnus Rassy has decreed that Hallberg-Rassy needed a new flagship, and this is it – the largest yacht that the Swedish has ever built. It’s a direction that many other yards are also taking. Just look at the Arcona 50, the Saffier SL 46 and the Jeanneau and Beneteau Yacht ranges (55-65ft) as cases in point.

So just what has Hallberg-Rassy managed to squeeze into 69ft? Well, they’ve stuck their guns about what they believe makes a good boat, and the queues at the boat show suggest the punters think so too. Designed, as has been the case for many years, by German Frers, the 69 follows the overhaul of the range begun in 2017 with the 44 – fine bows, wide stern, twin rudders, a long waterline, vertical stem and integrated bowsprit.

Forward of the mast, the deck is completely flush, while aft of the mast, the coach roof and cockpit could almost be a cut and shut from many of the other models, save for the fact that this boat has twin wheels – it’s designed to feel secure and offer a commanding position for serious cruising, rather than the wide, open sun decks that are more common these days.

In the cockpit, you’ll find all the controls to hand at the push of a button – this is a boat intended for family sailing rather than with a crew, though you might struggle to single-hand her.

Amadeus Description

Built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard, and having undergone a total refit in 2018, S/Y Amadeus was designed to please the most demanding of yachtsmen. Built for smooth sailing, this elegant cutter rigged sloop has a sleek hull design, comfortably reaching top speeds of 12 knots and ensuring excellent sailing performance. S/Y Amadeus has just undergone this past winter (2018) a major refit such as total repaint top to bottom, new rigging (BSI Denmark), Novourania with new Evinrude 75hp outboard, Splash pool, new Bimini/Sprayhood/Awnings, new exterior fabrics and many other enhancements. In 2016 new “North Sails” were placed onboard. The yacht is maintained in excellent condition with a five-star crew year round. Her generous uncluttered teak deck offers plenty of space for sunbathing. The spacious and unique outdoor saloon has two tables seating upto 12 guests and is a perfect setting for outdoor dining and entertainment. Thanks to a special canopy and roll-up windows, the deck saloon has the added attraction that it can be fully enclosed, making it ideal for all weather conditions. Her forward area includes a splash pool and sun bathing area which can also be shaded with a removable awning. From the cockpit, a stairway leads to the light-filled spacious saloon offering ample seating, ideal for relaxing or enjoying a drink from the bar, and offers a formal dining area. This area also includes a LCD TV, entertainment center, ipod dock station, playstation, and is ideal for indoor activities. She can accommodate 10-12 guests in one full width master stateroom, two double bedded cabins each having one extra single bed and two twin bedded cabins which can be easily converted to double beds (upon request), thus, making her the only 5 double bedded sailboat in the Greek market. She also has a nice selection of toys which include water ski (adult and children), tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod and snorkeling gear.

CAPTAIN - Harry Fotopoulos Captain Harry is a graduate of the Merchant Marine Academy and holds a Captain Class A’ Diploma. He also holds a Canadian Commercial Pilot license class B, sailing and speedboat license. He has over 15 years of experience onboard many types of Charter Yachts. He holds Certificates in GMDSS, Fire Fighting & First Aid, Personal Safety, Life Saving, and Ship Security. He has a great knowledge of the Greek islands and will navigate guests to remarkable destinations. During his one season on board he showed great leadership skills and received positive feedback from all guests. He is calm yet very outgoing and speaks very good English. DECKHAND - Konstantinos Santas CHIEF STEWARDESS - Mirella Davint Mirella has 8+ years of experience as a stewardess onboard charter and private yachts. She has a very pleasant personality and she aims to accommodate her guests to the fullest. Comments received from previous guests are memorable. This will be Mirella’s eighth season onboard. Mirella speaks English and she is 38 years old. ENGINEER - Stelios Mandos Stelios holds an Engineer Class B’ Diploma from the Greek Merchant Marine Academy as well as a Sailor’s License. He has over 15 years of experience onboard Ocean-Going Vessels and Charter Yachts. His hobbies include spearfishing and sailing. He speaks good English. Stelios is 45 years old, married with two children. CHEF - Thanasis Kiritsis Thanasis is 39 years old and has worked as a chef for more than 20 years in numerous hotels restaurants, yachts and resorts including owning his own pastry shop / bakery for 5 years. Thanasis looks forward to welcoming his guests on board and introducing them to his culinary world. He speaks good English and Greek. He is a young chef full of energy, skills and passion towards his job. We are confident that he will serve his guests unforgettable flavors. ASSISTANT STEWARDESS - Anastasia Yurash Anastasia is 31 years old and has been in the yachting industry since 2021. Her working experience includes 7 years as a housekeeper and assistant stewardess. Anastasia speaks very good English. One of Anastasia’s strongest attributes is her appetite for work. She is also very sociable, welcoming and looks forward to having guests on board S/Y Amadeus. A General Description of Sailing Yacht AMADEUS

AMADEUS was previously registered as project/yacht name Amadeus 1er. This 33 metre (109 ft) luxury yacht was built by Dynamique Yachts in 1991. Sailing Yacht AMADEUS is a well proportioned superyacht. The yacht is a modern sloop with a cutter rig. The naval architecture office whom authored the design work on this ship was Philippe Briand. Luxury yacht AMADEUS is a quality yacht that is able to accommodate as many as 12 guests on board and has a total of 5 crew members.

Sailing yacht AMADEUS was built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard .The yacht features superb sailing characteristics which are complimented by her spacious interior and abundant deck space. Sailing sloop AMADEUS can accommodate 10 passengers in five cabins. With one large master stateroom and four additional cabins which are all air conditioned and have en suite bathrooms. She also has two separate salons and a full dining room. The aft deck is fully covered with seating. The fore deck has an unique pool on deck and swimming in the sea is made accessible by a large swim aft platform.

The Construction & Naval Architecture relating to Luxury Yacht AMADEUS

Philippe Briand was the naval architect firm involved in the formal nautical design work for AMADEUS. Also the company Philippe Briand skillfully collaborated on this undertaking. In 1991 she was actually launched to triumph in Marans and following sea trials and final completion was afterwards passed on to the yacht owner. Dynamique Yachts completed their new build sailing yacht in France. A reasonable proportion is brought about with a maximum beam (width) of 7.5 metres / 24.6 feet. With a 3.6m (11.8ft) draught (maximum depth) she is reasonably deep. The material composite was used in the building of the hull of the sailing yacht. Her superstructure above deck is built with the use of composite. Over the deck of AMADEUS she is 32.7 (107.3 ft) in length. In 2004 extra refitting and modernisation was also finished.

Engines & Speed For S/Y AMADEUS:

She is driven by twin screw propellers. The main engine of the ship gives 375 horse power (or 276 kilowatts). She is equiped with 2 engines. The combined thrust for the boat is therefore 750 HP / 552 KW.

On board Superyacht AMADEUS She has The Following Guest Accommodation Format:

Bestowing bedding for a maximum of 12 yacht guests sleeping aboard, the AMADEUS accommodates them in style. Normally the vessel requires approximately 5 professional crewmembers to run.

Her master cabin features a walk around king bed, desk/vanity, and en-suite bathroom. Additionally, there are two guest cabins each with a queen bed convertible to two twins, and two guest cabins each with a queen bed and twin bed. Each guest cabin has an en-suite.

Her main salon has a spacious, contoured conversational area, along with a large, flatscreen T.V. The aft deck features al fresco dining with Bimini top. Up on deck there are sun pads and a splash pool for you and your guests to enjoy.

Watersports offered include a 15 foot tender with 75hp engine, water skis for adults and children, tube, wakeboard, kayak, fishing gear, snorkeling gear, and rendezvous diving.

Sailing yacht AMADEUS is a stunning 110 ft yacht available for charter in Greece. With a clean, spacious teak deck and a unique outdoor saloon that can seat up to 12 guests across two tables, it’s the perfect place for outdoor dining and entertainment. The deck saloon can also be enclosed with a special canopy and roll-up windows, making it suitable for use in all weather conditions. At the front of the boat, there’s a splash pool and sunbathing area with a removable awning for shade.

Inside the boat, a staircase from the cockpit leads to a well-lit and roomy saloon area with plenty of seating, including a formal dining area, bar, LCD TV, entertainment center, iPod dock station, and Playstation. Sailing Yacht AMADEUS can accommodate 10-12 guests in five large cabins, including a full-width master stateroom and two double cabins, each with an extra single bed. The two twin cabins can also be converted to doubles upon request, making her the only sailboat on the Greek market with five double beds.

To add to the fun, sailing yacht AMADEUS also comes with a range of water toys, including adult and children’s water skis, tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod, and snorkeling gear. She was built by Dynamique Yachts in 1996 and underwent a refit in 2014/2018.

Accomodation is offered for 10 -12 guests in 5 spacious cabins: Master cabin forward features a double bed, vanity unit and generous storage facilities, as well as audio/visual entertainment. The en-suite includess a large bath tub, shower and separate WC. Two identical double cabins with additional single bunks situated forward. Two identical double cabins situated aft which can be convertible to twins. (Total 5 double beds) All cabins with en suite facilities and audio/visual entertainment.

A professional crew of 5-6 members are accommodated in separate quarters.

Charter the AMADEUS

AMADEUS is a 110-foot sailing yacht that can accommodate ten to twelve passengers in five staterooms as follows: a spacious Owner’s stateroom with a double bed, a vanity and an entertainment unit including TV, DVD and music system; two cabins with a double bed and an additional single bed; two cabins with two twin beds each. All staterooms have en suite bathrooms, a TV, DVD and CD player. There are two separate salons onboard as well as a full dining room. The aft deck is fully covered and has seating for all guests to dine in the open air. Forward of the cockpit is a lovely cushioned area for sunning and an unusual pool is found in the fore of the yacht. Swimming in the sea is made accessible by the large swim aft platform.

Built in 2008, Amadeus offers guest accommodation for up to 6 guests in 3 suites comprising a master suite, one VIP cabin and one twin cabin. There are 4 beds in total, including 1 queen, 1 double and 2 singles. She is also capable of carrying up to 2 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht charter experience.

Onboard Comfort & Entertainment

Whatever your activities on your charter, you'll find some impressive features are seamlessly integrated to help you, notably Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing you to stay connected at all times, should you wish. Guests will experience complete comfort while chartering thanks to air conditioning.

If you’re looking to write a request to work remotely, then this article is for you. We’re going to cover how to write all parts of a request to work remotely, including examples/templates for asking your manager to work from home, email subject lines, and more.

Can I Ask My Job to Work Remotely?

Every worker can ask their employer to work remotely. However, you should first determine if your job duties can be performed remotely full-time without harming your performance. Some jobs, like a nurse or security guard , require your physical presence and simply can’t be performed from home. So the first step in getting to work from home is finding a role that allows it. Also, consider whether your company is already allowing other employees to work from home on a full-time basis, or somewhat regularly. If so, the employer is more likely to consider your request, too.

It’s still worth sending a request to work remotely even if other employees aren’t being allowed to do so. You could be the trailblazer for your company or organization in this regard. But it’s a better sign if other people in your company are already working from home.

Next, let’s look at some steps and samples for how to write your remote work request letter.

How Do You Write a Request to Work Remotely?

To write your request to begin working remotely, consider your manager’s perspective and write a compelling letter that shows how you’ll continue being productive (or possibly become more productive) when working from home.

Make sure you’re saying, “You” in the letter, not just “I”.

For example:

“I’m confident that while working from home, I’ll produce more work for you, and better-quality work, because <reasons>.”

Keep your letter relatively short. Writing more content won’t necessarily boost your odds of hearing “yes” from your boss when you ask to go remote. Also, consider using your letter/email to simply begin the conversation, and then follow up with an in person meeting. You may have more success in finalizing a work-from-home request if you speak to your boss in person.

Coming up, we’ll look at multiple examples of both a temporary request to work from home, and how to request to work from home permanently. You’re also more likely to hear “yes” to your remote work request if you first request a trial period where you work from home for just one or two days per week.  Then, you can move to working from home regularly all five days per week later. I’ll share email templates for that, too.

Sample Letters and Email Templates to Ask to Work Remotely

Sample email #1 requesting to work from home regularly:.

Hello <Manager’s name>, I’m writing to ask about the possibility of working from home in my current role. I’m excited about how the role is going and I’m enjoying the work. Yet I believe that I would be more productive for you without my lengthy commute <or insert other reason you’d be more productive at home>. I already have a quiet, organized home office space set up. I’d also be able to come into the office on an as-needed basis, for meetings, projects, etc. Is this something you would be open to discussing further? Best regards, <Your name>

Sample email #2 requesting to work from home regularly:

Hello <Manager’s name>, I was hoping to discuss the possibility of working remotely in my current role. I’m excited about the work I’m doing, how the role is going, and what I’m learning. Yet I believe I’d be even more productive and focused at home, and I’d be able to spend more time producing work for you if I weren’t commuting each morning and evening. Is remote work something you would be open to discussing further? Thanks, <Your name>

Consider Requesting to Work Remotely with a Shorter First Email

In general, managers don’t love surprises. Whether you’re resigning, asking to change teams, or in this case, submitting your request to work from home regularly, it’s best to ease them into the idea. So while I provided full employee email examples above to go remote, I want to show you an alternate approach, too.

With this gradual approach, you would write an email request to start a dialogue and then continue the conversation in person or over the phone. You’ll want to slightly vary your request depending on if other team members are already remote or not. See the example emails below for how to write your email request.

Example email if coworkers are already working remotely:

Hello <Manager’s name>, I’ve noticed some team members in this department work remotely, so I wanted to ask if there’s a process in place for achieving this or requesting this. I believe that working remotely would allow me to be more productive and focused for you, and I’d be able to work more hours as well since I wouldn’t be commuting each day. Is this something we could discuss further, perhaps over the phone or face to face in the office? Best regards, <Your name>

Example email if nobody in the company works remotely yet:

Hello <Manager’s name>, Is there a process by which an employee can request to work remotely for <Company Name>? It’s an idea that has interested me for a while, and I think working remotely would allow me to be more productive and focused. I’d love to discuss further with you, perhaps on a call or face to face in the office. Best regards, <Your name>

Tip: Request a Partial Remote Work Arrangement First

One tip for how to convince a company to let you work remotely is to ask to work only a few days per week from home to start, and then gradually transition into full-time remote work. Instead of sending a request letter asking to work remotely 100% of the time, you could begin by suggesting you work from home occasionally.

For example, Tuesdays and Thursdays (or two other days per week).

I like Tuesday and Thursday so that your boss and colleagues won’t think you’re trying to get an extended weekend by working from home. Once you begin working remotely, make sure your productivity is HIGHER than normal. Show them beyond any doubt that you can work effectively even when not in the office. Participate in company email chains and chat programs to show you’re at the computer and not taking advantage of being at home, etc. Eliminate all distractions and background noise for video calls and phone calls.

Make it undeniable that you’re productive at home. Then, after a few months, you can send a follow-up letter requesting to work from home regularly (using the sample letters above). While this two-step method takes longer, it’ll likely boost your odds of securing a full-time remote work arrangement that you can stick with permanently.

Sample letter/template for asking to work from home on a partial basis:

Hello <Manager’s name>, I was hoping to discuss the possibility of working remotely in my current role. I’m excited about the work I’m doing, how the role is going, and what I’m learning. Yet I believe that I would be more productive for you and more focused at home without my lengthy commute <or insert other reason you’d be more productive at home>. I already have a quiet, organized home office space set up, too. Is remote work something you would be open to discussing further? Perhaps I could begin with just two days per week to determine whether my productivity levels are indeed higher. If so, we could discuss how I can continue working remotely. Best regards, <Your name>

Include a Remote Work Proposal with Your Request Letter

To gather more tips for this article, I spoke to remote job coach Jordan Carroll. He recommends going one step beyond an email or letter and also providing your employer with a remote work proposal. The purpose of the remote work proposal is to expand and elaborate on your work-from-home plan. You want to leave your manager with fewer questions, address potential obstacles/concerns, etc.

Your remote work proposal should include (but not be limited to) the following points:

• Success Criteria : Be clear on what defines success, how it’s measured, and when you will review your numbers and accomplishments. Think about what reporting measurements you currently use in your day-to-day job and make reasonable estimates about when and what will be accomplished from home.
• Contingency Plans : Be proactive in proposing a back-up plan for any obstacles that may arise. If (Situation A) happens, then we will (Solution A). Provide examples for as many situations as you can think of, within reason. Think about your role and what comes up in your day-to-day workload that would need contingencies, and address those scenarios in your proposal.
• Benefits of Remote Work : What are the driving factors and benefits you are aiming to get from this experience? How would your work improve? Listing specific circumstances that are driving your request will help your management empathize.
• Communication Cadence : If your current manager is used to seeing you in the office every day, not having you physically there will be an adjustment on their part. Provide a proposed cadence for when you’ll communicate and how (phone, Zoom, online chat, etc.) Providing your company with a schedule that you plan to stick to also helps your manager understand how you plan to structure your new freedom while still maintaining productivity.

Request to Work from Home When Your Work is Already Going Well

If you’re requesting permanent remote work, keep in mind that you’ll boost your chances if you wait until you’re performing well in the role. Also, wait until you’ve been in the role for at least a few months before you submit your letter asking to work remotely. If you look at the first two email templates above for submitting a request to work from home regularly, you’ll see a mention of how you feel the role is going well. This is by design. If you want to land permanent remote work from the start of a role, then you should ideally be asking about the topic in the job interview. By asking in the interview, you can identify potential employer concerns, address them, and gauge whether this company will ever let you work remotely. Some employers simply aren’t open to remote work. Many companies are coming around to the idea, and it’s not such a delicate subject lately, but some employers still have possible concerns or policies against remote work.

Email vs. Letter vs. Conversation: The Best Way to Ask to Work From Home

Play to your strengths when you ask to work from home. Above, I mentioned some advantages to asking in person versus through email. However, if you’re someone who is a lot more comfortable via email, then this is a good choice, too. Perhaps you feel you’ll be more effective and organized in making your arguments through writing. In this case, it’s wise to craft an email outlining all of the reasons you’d like to work from home. Plus, with email, you can wait a day, go back and re-read it, and ask a family member for their opinion, before you press “send.” If you say something in a live conversation, you cannot take it back. Still, a manager will appreciate you being up-front and discussing this in person with them, so weigh the pros and cons of each option as you decide how to submit your request.

Email Subject Lines to Request to Work from Home

If you opt to put send your work-from-home request via email, choose a simple email subject line such as:

• Work arrangement question
• Work question
• Question for you

Each company has different procedures and expectations when it comes to email communication and email subject lines, so if in doubt, follow your company’s internal guidelines. If you’re not sure what subject line to use and your company does not specify in their official documentation/guidelines exactly how you must write your emails, you can use the subject lines above.

Note that you can also use one of the subject lines above if emailing your human resources department to ask to work from home. However, I recommend first asking your direct manager for permission to work remotely. Working remotely will impact your manager and team most directly, so this is a request that you should send directly to your manager when possible.

Sample Letters Requesting to Work From Home Temporarily

You may find yourself wanting to send a request to work from home temporarily, for personal reasons, health reasons, family issues, etc. You can use the two templates below to help write your email or letter to request temporary remote work.

Sample request to work from home temporarily (personal health issues):

Hello <Manager’s name>, I wanted to ask whether it would be possible for me to work from home temporarily for health reasons, for approximately <number of days/weeks/months>. I’m working on resolving a personal health issue and it would help me greatly if I could work remotely during this period. I’d maintain the same work hours and quality of work, and would be available online for check-in calls, meetings, and all of the other conversations that occur throughout my workday in the office. Best regards, <Your name>

Sample request to work from home temporarily (family issues):

Hello <Manager’s name>, Would it be possible to work remotely on a temporary basis, for <number of days/weeks/months>? I’m in the midst of a family emergency, and while I would maintain the same work hours and quality of work, it would help me greatly to be able to do so from home for this period of time. I’m happy to discuss further or clarify anything needed. Best regards, <Your name>

What to Do if Your Remote Work Request is Denied

Even if you’ve done amazing work for the past year or more, written the perfect email and subject line to request to work from home, and highlighted multiple strong points and arguments, there’s no guarantee you’ll hear “yes”.

No matter what your manager says to your request to work from home, try not to show disappointment in the meeting, and definitely don’t show anger. If the lack of remote work options is a deal-breaker for you, then you can quietly conduct a job search and look to move on when you’re ready. Sometimes, it’s easier to find a fully-remote job than trying to convert your current in-office position into a remote one. This is especially true if none of your coworkers are currently able to work from home.

However, starting a job search is a drastic option, so first, you could also ask your manager a few open-ended questions, such as:

• “What is your main concern when it comes to me working remotely?”
• “I see. Why is that?”

You can’t respond and continue making your case if you don’t understand their objection first. Asking open-ended, non-threatening questions can be a fantastic way to negotiate and move the conversation forward. If no one in your company has ever worked remotely, your manager may just be caught off-guard by the idea and need some time and discussion to start seeing the benefits. As one more option, if your boss isn’t open to letting you go remote, but you know other departments/teams in the company are partially or fully remote, you can request a transfer.

If you follow the tips above, you’ll have a professional, formal work-from-home request, whether you’re hoping to work remotely regularly or temporarily. While some companies won’t offer permanent remote work, more and more employers are becoming open to the idea and therefore, it can’t hurt to ask! Remember to lay out why a remote work arrangement would be beneficial to the employer, and consider starting out by sending a trial basis request where you ask to work from home for two days per week.

That strategy will give you the greatest chance of achieving the dream of working from home and the better work-life balance that comes with it. And if you hear “no” don’t get discouraged. You may simply be up against a company’s culture and old-school mindset. Or a particular manager who doesn’t believe in allowing remote work. Sometimes, you’ll need to change jobs to find the remote work arrangement you seek. At least you asked and found out before making a big change!

• Cover letters prove your passion. Even if you’re competing against candidates with similar resumes, a cover letter can convince employers you’re the best person for the job. It’s your chance to demonstrate interest and expertise in your field beyond basic work experience.  And you can tell your story about why you find value in working from home.
• Cover letters show off your personality. In the world of remote work, there are no team lunches or post-shift happy hours for getting to know people (Although there are some cool virtual happy hour ideas and options). Video calls and chat platforms are helpful replacements for in-person socializing, but a cover letter can give future coworkers a glimpse of who you are and what you’ll contribute to team culture. 
• Cover letters highlight “soft skills.” Succeeding at work is about more than hitting your quarterly goals. You can use a cover letter to explain your team-management philosophies, your ideas for troubleshooting problems, and even your strategies for remote work and collaboration. After all, a hiring manager for remote roles will want to know you can be productive outside of a traditional office. 
• Cover letters lay the groundwork for remote-first. Not sure if company leaders will allow you to work remotely? Here’s your chance to explain why you want to be remote-first , and you can assure managers that you’re a valuable team member in or out of an office. 

How long should a cover letter be?

You’re writing a letter, not a novel. The ideal cover letter should be about half a page or up to one page. Typically, this falls under 500 total words, but there is no exact word amount you need to stick by. Just note that you won’t need to write a cover letter that’s longer than one page.

That may not sound like a lot of space, but you can say a lot in just a single page. Skip the filler and just be direct.

Will employers consider you without a cover letter? 

You may be considered for a job without a cover letter, but if you have the chance to submit one, it often helps to do so. Going the extra mile in your application, whether for a remote job or in-office position, will give you the best advantage to snag an interview.

This is your chance to highlight everything your resume can’t, so instead of viewing cover letters as an unnecessary requirement, look at them as an opportunity.

What You Should Include in a Cover Letter for a Remote Job

Just as every job is different, every cover letter will be a little different too. However, it will be helpful to include a few key elements in your letter no matter which role you’re in the running for.

However, with any remote job or hybrid opportunity, there are some extra things you want to include to show your skills and value.

• Demonstrate an understanding of the company. It’s not a good idea to blindly recycle the same cover letter over and over again—you can and should tailor your writing to the company you’re applying to. Loopcv recommends researching the company before writing, and then you can personalize your letter for that business specifically. 
• Fill in details about your work history. Resumes are helpful, but they can’t reveal everything about you. Your cover letter is the perfect place to elaborate on important parts of your resume or add information on past experiences. If you’ve worked remotely in the past, ensure to highlight that experience and skills to effectively do your job.
• Underline your own value. A resume alone isn’t enough to make you a top candidate. Think about what makes you the single best person for this particular job, and spell that out in your letter. 
• Remind the hiring manager that you understand remote work. Wanting to work remotely isn’t something you need to apologize for, but you can use your cover letter to highlight your remote-first skills. Reserve space in your letter to discuss remote work’s benefits for you and your productivity . 
• Specific skills that demonstrate you can handle remote work . Whether you have or have not worked remotely, include any skills or examples that would apply to being a successful remote employee. The best areas to think about would be communication, organization, time management, team alignment, and autonomy to get tasks done.
• Tell the company what you can do for them. Already have big ideas for a new role? Don’t be shy about them! A cover letter offers a venue to share these ideas, proving you’re ready to hit the ground running in a new job.

How to Write a Cover Letter for Remote Jobs

When you organize your thoughts and plan your cover letters correctly, they can become less of a chore. Here’s how to write your next cover letter for remote work. 

1. Do your research before writing.

When it comes to cover letters, Western Carolina University notes, specificity is better . Remember to research your company and potential role, and use your letter itself to explain why you’re a great fit for both. 

Things you can do include analyzing the company website, looking at their social media company handles, thoroughly reading the remote job listing, listening to podcasts of company leaders, etc.

2. Create an outline of key points.

Whether you want to talk about remote experiences, explain a highlight of your resume, or share ideas you have for the job, you should plan how and where these points will fit into your draft.

By having these written down ahead of time, you can start to craft your main narrative when you introduce yourself and where your top experiences or ideas can naturally fit in.

3. Call out specific skills that relate to remote work.

As alluded to in the previous section, you definitely want to include skills that show you can handle remote work. Use this time to demonstrate skills that apply to areas of the job you’re applying for, and tie it back to remote work.

An example could be a project you took ownership of and gave detailed project updates to the team to meet an aggressive goal.

That would cover self-ownership, strong communication, and organization in just one highlight. This can show your job-related skills and how you crushed this project while working remotely.

4. Provide any resume clarifications.

Sometimes, you may have something on your resume that could be deemed a red flag. Maybe you had a gap in employment or a very short stint at a specific employer. While it does not have to mean something bad happened, why let a hiring manager or recruiter start to wonder?

Instead, use your cover letter to call out anything that could be questioned, but isn’t explainable via the resume alone.

5. Write and review.

Don’t click the submit button the second you’re done writing! Reread your letter and, if possible, ask a friend or significant other to read it too. Grammar errors and oversights can be easy to miss in your own work, so it’s always better to get an extra set of eyes on the cover letter. 

6. Send the letter and save it for future reference.

Even though it’s not a good idea to recycle the exact same cover letter, you may want to refer to your letter later if you are offered interviews . (Or, you might want to grab some highlights to rework into future letters.)

Personally, I’ve saved one version of a cover letter that I could clone and edit with updated language as needed. This saves time from completely starting from scratch, and sometimes it would not need a major rewrite. Work smarter, not harder (;

There’s no one way to write a cover letter for a remote job, but starting with a template can be a helpful springboard. Here are two variations you are welcome to copy and use to help you fill in the content.

One is a bit more informal and the other is more traditional. Either can work well, just include the best details about you and your skills as you can.

Remote Job Cover Letter Template 1

Dear [Hiring Manager Name] , This is your Introductory Paragraph , where you will briefly introduce yourself and mention the role you’re applying to. You can also briefly state the reasons you’re a good fit.  Your Work Experiences Paragraph is the place to highlight key parts of your resume. Remember that if you’ve done your homework on the company, you’ll have a good idea of what they need in a job candidate, so you can emphasize relevant history here.   Finally, you’ll look to the future in the Why-Hire Paragraph. Here’s where you get specific about what you can do for the company, and you can also discuss the benefits of remote work for both you and them.  End the letter politely with a quick Call to Action Paragraph , letting the employer know you’re looking forward to chatting more about the role.  Sincerely,  [Your Name and Contact Info]

Specific projects, your impact, or results will be great to highlight in bullet points here as well. Reminder, use specific keywords or language that is similar to the remote job listing. This shows you read it in detail and align with the requirements of the job. Before drawing to a close, call out any questionable areas of your resume. If you don’t have any, then go right into why you are the candidate over the others applying for the job. As you end your cover letter, thank the recipient for taking the time to read your letter and reiterate your excitement to learn about the next steps for this job. Do you need to write a letter to apply for a job? Most of the time, the answer is yes. Even when employers don’t require a job application letter , writing one will help you highlight your skills and achievements and get the hiring manager’s attention. The only time not to send one is when the job listing says not to do so. It can help, and it definitely won't hurt to include an application letter with your resume.

A job application letter, also known as a cover letter , should be sent or uploaded with your resume when applying for jobs. While your resume offers a history of your work experience and an outline of your skills and accomplishments, the job application letter you send to an employer explains why you are qualified for the position and should be selected for an interview.

Writing this letter can seem like a challenging task. However, if you take it one step at a time, you'll soon be an expert at writing application letters to send with your resume.

Before you begin writing your job application letter, do some groundwork. Consider what information you want to include (keeping in mind that space is limited).

Remember, this letter is making a case for your candidacy for the position. But you can do better than just regurgitating your resume—instead, highlight your most relevant skills, experiences, and abilities.

Analyze the Job Posting

To include the most convincing, relevant details in your letter, you'll need to know what the employer wants.

The biggest clues are within the job advertisement, so spend some time decoding the job ad . Next, match your qualifications with the employer's wants and needs .

Include Your Most Relevant Qualifications

Make a list of your relevant experience and skills. For instance, if the job ad calls for a strong leader, think of examples of when you've successfully led a team. Once you've jotted down some notes, and have a sense of what you want to highlight in your letter, you're ready to get started writing.

Writing Guidelines for Job Application Letters

Writing a job application letter is very different from a quick email to a friend or a thank-you note to a relative. Hiring managers and potential interviewers have certain expectations when it comes to the letter's presentation and appearance, from length (no more than a page) to font size and style to letter spacing :

Length: A letter of application should be no more than one page long. Three to four paragraphs is typical.

Format and Page Margins: A letter of application should be single-spaced with a space between each paragraph. Use about 1" margins and align your text to the left, which is the standard alignment for most documents.

Font: Use a traditional font such as Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri. The font size should be between 10 and 12 points.

What To Include in Each Section of the Letter

There are also set rules for the sections included in the letter, from salutation to sign-off, and how the letter is organized. Here's a quick lowdown on the main sections included in a job application letter:

Heading: A letter of application should begin with both your and the employer's contact information (name, address, phone number, email) followed by the date. If this is an email rather than an actual letter, include your contact information at the end of the letter, after your signature.

•   Header Examples

Salutation: This is your polite greeting. The most common salutation is "Dear Mr./Ms." followed by the person's last name. Find out more about appropriate cover letter salutations , including what to do if you don't know the person's name, or are unsure of a contact's gender.

Body of the letter: Think of this section as being three distinct parts.

In the first paragraph , you'll want to mention the job you are applying for and where you saw the job listing.

The next paragraph(s) are the most important part of your letter. Remember how you gathered all that information about what employers were seeking, and how you could meet their needs? This is where you'll share those relevant details on your experience and accomplishments.

The third and last part of the body of the letter will be your thank you to the employer; you can also offer follow-up information.

Complimentary Close: Sign off your email with a polite close, such as "Best" or "Sincerely," followed by your name.

• Closing Examples

Signature: When you're sending or uploading a printed letter, end with your signature, handwritten, followed by your typed name. If this is an email, simply include your typed name, followed by your contact information.

One way to make the process of writing a job application easier is to use a job application letter template to create your own personalized job application letters for applying for a job. Having a template can help save you time if you are sending a lot of application letters.

Be sure that each letter you send is personalized to the company and position; do not send the same letter to different companies.

• Always write one. Unless a job posting specifically says not to send a letter of application or cover letter, you should always send one. Even if the company does not request a letter of application, it never hurts to include one. If they do ask you to send a letter, make sure to follow the directions exactly (for example, they might ask you to send the letter as an email attachment, or type it directly into their online application system).
• Use business letter format. Use a formal business letter format when writing your letter. Include your contact information at the top, the date, and the employer’s contact information. Be sure to provide a salutation at the beginning, and your signature at the end.
• Sell yourself. Throughout the letter, focus on how you would benefit the company. Provide specific examples of times when you demonstrated skills or abilities that would be useful for the job, especially those listed in the job posting or description. If possible, include examples of times when you added value to a company.

Numerical values offer concrete evidence of your skills and accomplishments.

• Use keywords. Reread the job listing, circling any keywords (such as skills or abilities that are emphasized in the listing). Try to include some of those words in your cover letter. This will help the employer see that you are a strong fit for the job.
• Keep it brief. Keep your letter under a page long, with no more than about four paragraphs. An employer is more likely to read a concise letter.
• Proofread and edit. Employers are likely to overlook an application with a lot of errors. Read through your cover letter, and if possible, ask a friend or career counselor to review the letter. Proofread for any grammar or spelling errors.

Getting on the waiting list for a council home

You can apply for a home through your local council. They might also call it ‘social housing’.

If your application is accepted, you’ll go on to a waiting list of people who need a council home. Your council will then prioritise applications based on who needs a home most urgently. The council’s allocations scheme will give details of who gets priority for homes in the area.

Even if you get on the waiting list there’s no guarantee you’ll get a home.

You could be offered a home owned by your local council or housing association.

You might have to apply to some housing associations directly instead of through the council - ask your council if there are any near you.

If your council has a long waiting list, they might ask if you want to apply for homes in other areas as well. You can be on several waiting lists at the same time and this might increase your chances of getting a home.

If you have nowhere to stay tonight

Your council might have a legal duty to help you find accommodation. Find out more about homeless help .

Check if you can apply for a council home

Your local council will have its own rules on who can apply and who has priority for homes - this is called an ‘allocation scheme’.  Check your council’s website  on GOV.UK to find out how it works in your area.

You’ll probably need to:

• be on a low income or not have a large amount of savings
• have lived in the area for a number of years, or have a job or family there - this is called a ‘local connection’

Not all councils need you to have a local connection. If you’re thinking about moving to a different area, it’s worth checking the council’s website to see if you can apply.

You also might be able to apply if you’ve lived in an area before.

You’ll also need to show you’re ‘eligible’ for council housing.

To check if you’re eligible, start by checking if your immigration status lets you apply for a council home.

If you’ve moved or returned to the UK in the last 2 years, you usually also have to show you’re ‘habitually resident’. You have to do this even if you’re a British citizen.

Your immigration status lets you apply for a council home if you:

• are a British or Irish citizen
• have settled status from the EU Settlement Scheme
• have indefinite leave to remain - unless someone had to sign a ‘maintenance undertaking’ that says they’ll support you financially
• have refugee status or humanitarian protection
• have right of abode
• have leave to remain in the UK as a ‘stateless person’

If you have pre-settled status from the EU Settlement Scheme, you can only apply for council housing if you have a ‘right to reside’.

If you’ve applied to the EU Settlement Scheme and you’re waiting for a decision, you can only apply for council housing if you have a right to reside.

If you’re from Ukraine

You're allowed to apply for council housing if all of the following are true:

• you were living in Ukraine immediately before 1 January 2022
• you left Ukraine because of the invasion
• it doesn’t say ‘no public funds’ or ‘no recourse to public funds’ on your immigration documents

You don't have to show you're habitually resident.

If you’ve come from Afghanistan

In some situations you’re allowed to apply for council housing - and you don’t have to show you’re habitually resident.

You’re allowed to apply if you came to the UK through one of these schemes at any time:

• the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP)
• the Afghanistan Locally Employed Staff Ex-Gratia Scheme (ALES)
• the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme (ACRS)

You're also allowed to apply if all of the following are true:

• you came to the UK from Afghanistan because of the fall of the government on 15 August 2021
• you’ve been given ‘leave to remain’
• it doesn’t say ‘no public funds’ on your immigration papers

Talk to an adviser if you have a sponsor, or if you’re not sure about your immigration status.

Your local council might ask you to prove your immigration status. You’ll need to show one of the following:

• a document showing you have come to the UK through one of the schemes
• a stamp or visa in your passport
• a letter from the Home Office that shows when you arrived and why

Before you try to get a council home, talk to an adviser .

If you’re from Sudan

You’re allowed to apply for council housing if all of the following are true:

• you were living in Sudan immediately before 15 April 2023
• you left Sudan because of the violence there

If you've come from Israel, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, the Golan Heights or Lebanon

• you were living in Israel, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem, the Golan Heights, or Lebanon immediately before 7th October 2023
• you left these areas because of the attack in Israel by Hamas on 7th October 2023 or the violence following this attack
• you've been given 'leave to remain'
• it doesn't say 'no public funds' or 'no recourse to public funds' on your immigration documents

You can’t apply for council housing if:

• you don’t have a right to be in the UK
• you’re in the UK as a visitor
• you’re seeking asylum
• it says ‘no public funds’ or ‘no recourse to public funds’ on your immigration documents

Check if you’re habitually resident

You’re habitually resident if you can show that the UK, Ireland, Channel Islands or Isle of Man is your main home. 

You’ll only have to show you’re habitually resident if you’ve moved or returned to the UK in the last 2 years.

Check if you’re habitually resident .

If you have pre-settled status or you’re waiting for a decision from the EU Settlement Scheme

You don’t need to show you’re habitually resident if you have a right to reside because:

• you’re a worker - this includes if you’ve retained worker status
• you’re a self-employed person - this includes if you’ve retained self-employed status
• you’re the family member of a worker or self-employed person
• you’ve retired - or you’re the family member of someone who retired
• you can’t work any more because of illness or an accident - or you’re the family member of someone in that position

You still have to show you’re habitually resident if you have another type of right to reside, for example a permanent right to reside based on 5 years in the UK.

If you’re not sure which right to reside you have, you can check the rules about the right to reside for housing .

Find out if you’re a priority for a home

You’re more likely to get a council home if you’ve been given priority by your council's allocation scheme.

This could be if you’re:

• legally homeless or the council has a duty to find you accommodation if you’re homeless - check what help the council should give you
• moving because of a disability or serious, long-term health condition
• moving to a different area because of ‘hardship' - this could be to get medical treatment, because you’re in danger or to take up a new job
• in a home that’s overcrowded or in poor condition

It’s likely to take you a long time to get an offer - even if you get priority in your area. In areas with long waiting lists, you might not be offered a home at all.

It might be best to look for a home yourself or stay where you are - if you’re struggling with money, check if you can get help with your rent . You can also look at renting from a private landlord .

If you think you haven’t been given enough priority, you can ask your council to review their decision . Check your council's allocation scheme to see who's given priority in your area.

Applying for a council home

You’ll probably need to apply online - check which council you need to apply to on GOV.UK.

If the council accepts your application, it doesn’t mean you’ll get a home straight away. You’ll go on a waiting list and it could still take a long time.

If you’re applying directly to a housing association the rules might be different - check their process on their website.

Filling in the application

Give as much detail as you can in your application. You might be asked to give extra evidence to support your application - like medical notes if you have a health condition.

Your council will use the information you give them to decide if you’re eligible to join the waiting list. If your application’s accepted, they’ll then use it to decide if you get priority and what size home you should get.

You might need to give details of:

• your income, including from your job or benefits
• any long-term health conditions or disabilities you have
• your job history
• your savings and any assets you have - this is an item that’s worth a lot of money, for example a car
• where you’ve lived for the last few years and why you left
• any visas or immigration documents (like a passport), if you’re not from the UK

If you need help with your application

You’ll need to answer a lot of questions in the application form and it could take more than an hour to complete. Talk to your local council if you need help.

You might be able to get a family member or carer to help with your application too.

Getting your decision

If your application is accepted, your council will put you in a group or ‘band’ that reflects your level of priority.

If they think you need a home urgently, you’ll usually be given a high priority.

You could still have a long wait for a home even if you have high priority. Ask your local council to find out how long the wait is in your area.

Your council decides your level of priority using the criteria in their allocations scheme.
