  Lantau Yacht Club Forges Ahead in 2022, Becoming the New Superyacht Hub and Yachting Activity Centre in Hong Kong

Lantau Yacht Club , the newest yacht club and marina in Hong Kong, is delighted to celebrate its achievements  while looking forward to a year full of opportunities and possibilities in 2022. 

A Pioneer and Achiever

Lantau Yacht Club is a premium, members-only club offering world-class mooring facilities and modern amenities and the only marina built specifically for superyachts in Hong Kong. They are delighted that their superb standards have been recognised by the industry and they received their first accolade on their first anniversary.

In September 2021, LYC was accredited as a  Five Gold Anchors   marina  by the Marina Industries Association, positioning them among the most outstanding marinas in the world for exceptional facilities and remarkable services. 

During the year, LYC was the first marina to launch  the first-ever Yachtcation package  in Hong Kong, drawing a lot of interests from the yachting community and receiving commendations from many yacht aficionados who came to try out our state-of-the-art facilities. As the newest marina in town, LYC is one of the few that can offer  transient berthing for yachts , whether they are looking for berthing and getaway over the weekend or require short term mooring before or after maintenance works.

A New Superyacht Hub and Yachting Activity Centre

Since LYC welcomed the first member’s boat in late August 2020, the LYC Marina is filling up steadily to become  a superyacht showcase in Hong Kong . They have attracted numerous premium models of luxury yachts brands including the Pershing 140, Custom Line Navetta 30, Princess X95, Mangusta 130, 39.6m Astilleros MCIES, Sanlorenzo SX112, Sanlorenzo SD126 and Azimut Grande 35 Metri, all of which are firsts in Asia. LYC also secured a few new memberships, and the superyachts of these members, some of which over 60m, are scheduled to be delivered in the coming years. 

To further enhance the service offerings to yacht owners, from Q1 2022, a number of service contractors will be based in LYC to provide  yacht care services, maintenance and  yacht management   services .   Chandlery & water toys shop, as well as yachting academy centre and wake surfing classes will also be available.

The Exclusive Event Venue for Industry and Private Events

In fact, LYC has become  a hip and exclusive venue for industry and private events  – industry events held in 2021 included Ferretti Group Breakfast Reception in April, Princess Yachts Experience in May and Prestige Exclusive Day & Asia Yachting Brokerage Boat Show in November.  As the newest yacht club in Hong Kong with luxurious space for displaying quite a number of boats, they are looking forward to hosting more industry events in 2022, the  Hong Kong Yacht Show  organised by the Hong Kong Boating Industry Association. LYC are also discussing hosting exclusive product showcases,  with many yacht brands and dealers for brokerage boat shows or yacht owners event.

With the spectacular marina and South China Sea as the backdrop and surrounded by lush greenery, LYC is set to be the  most inspiring venue for events of all types . Over the past months, LYC hosted a few members’ private events including a member’s anniversary party where the clubhouse was transformed into a dance floor with live music with canapes and cocktails being served, followed by a fine-dining banquet at Caffè Napoli. There was also a member’s BBQ party on the lawn for 60 guests and a few different off-site meetings for large corporations.

The  Journey Continues

As LYC sails smoothly into 2022, they expect the yachting scene will continue to thrive within the borders as overseas travel is still restricted, and water based activities continue to gain popularity for those who are looking for leisure activity options locally. LYC offers unprecedented mooring facilities and experiences for their members and visitors while putting safety as a top priority.  

Marina operations at LYC is taken care of by a dedicated Marina team, with  Tom Leung  recently joining the team as the  new Marina Manager . “ LYC’s mission is to offer premium yachting facilities and become the preferred mooring destination and yacht club in Hong Kong. Tom has been working in several maritime services providers and yacht clubs, and brought with him a wealth of experience in marina operations and customer services. Hong Kong’s Lantau Yacht Club open for business

Hong Kong’s first custom-built superyacht marina, Lantau Yacht Club is now welcoming its first boats following an extensive overhaul of the former Club.

Lantau Yacht Club has welcomed its first yachts as the newly named marina soft opened following a concentrated period of rebuilding and refurbishment since the start of 2019.

The first member vessel, a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 479 sailing boat, was the first boat to berth in the marina and was followed by a visiting Ferretti Yachts 670 motor yacht, a model that recently made its Asian debut in Hong Kong.

All 148 berths are scheduled to be completed by October and will be followed by the opening of the new-look clubhouse, which is undergoing a major facelift as part of the overhaul of the former Discovery Bay Marina Club, founded in 1989.

With the end of construction in sight and operations beginning, Ivan Lee, the club’s Vice President, appears a relieved man, especially with the second year of work coinciding with the Covid-19 outbreak.

“We have been very blessed with the weather, so everything has gone to plan and is on schedule,” Lee says.

Located in Discovery Bay on the northeast of Lantau Island, the marina is owned by Hong Kong Resort Company (HKR), a principal subsidiary of HKR International Limited (HKRI) and the developer and owner of Discovery Bay, the 650-hectare residential complex accessed by road or a 25-minute ferry ride west of Central.

The first marina in Hong Kong designed to cater to the specific needs of superyachts, the Lantau Yacht Club features 38 berths for yachts from 30m to over 60m and can accommodate megayachts up to about 100m, with the longest berths located by the marina entrance and the seawall.

“Hong Kong is one of the main activity centres of superyachts in the region, but there has been a lack of mooring and facilities tailor-made for superyachts in Hong Kong in the past,” Lee says. “As Lantau Yacht Club will also attract superyachts from other parts of the world, a number of berths will be reserved for visiting yachts.”

The marina also includes 57 berths for yachts from 15-30m and 53 from 10-15m, all with finger pontoons. Furthermore, there’s hard stand space for 15 boats up to 17m and dry-stack storage with 30 slots up to 12m.

NEW AND IMPROVED Lee says the marina has been reconfigured within the original breakwater not only to accommodate larger yachts but also for a general upgrade in hardware and software to reflect the changes in yachting and technology in recent decades.

HKR managed the project with support from specialists and consultants. Marina Projects advised on the masterplan design, berth mix and technical provisions, while Atkins was responsible for the structural design of the concrete pontoon system.

“The marina has been custom designed and rebuilt to cater to today’s standard and requirements, especially for the increasingly popular superyacht sector. After 29 years of non-stop operation, the marina and clubhouse needed to be renovated and upgraded to provide safe, high-quality berthing and services for members,” Lee says.

“For example, the old marina layout was based on yacht sizes that were common over three decades ago, while electricity and fire-safety requirements have changed over the years. First and foremost, Lantau Yacht Club is a typhoon-proof marina, offering the best-possible safety and protection for all berthed vessels.”

The main piers are 5m wide so buggies can safely cross each-other alongside pedestrians, although the installation of 5m-wide concrete pontoons up to 20m in length proved one of the challenges during construction, which followed a comprehensive technical feasibility and engineering assessment. “The main pontoons are in concrete to give the same feeling as walking on land,” says Rudy Puystjens, Marina Director.

It may seem a small point, but ashtrays are installed in the marina and people won’t be allowed to flick cigarette butts into the water due to the club’s strong focus on sustainability and environmental friendliness. Fines for polluting and littering will be used for eco projects.

Other measures include mandatory use of biodegradable detergents, recycling and treatment of water used in the service yard, and progressive banning of single-use plastic, while coral planting is among co-initiatives being considered.

It’s not only the berth lengths and environmental focus that have increased. As an example of how services and software have been upgraded, the total electricity capacity is four times bigger than before. Superyachts are serviced by an individual pedestal providing up to 600 amp of three-phase shore-power electricity.

There’s up to 4G of broadband on pontoons, while the club plans to introduce a 5G mobile network.

“The marina’s electricity provision is best of its class and the club is equipped with the highest level of IT provisions,” Puystjens says. “We’re also equipped with a world-class marina management software for a seamless customer experience.”

GROWING CONNECTIONS Lantau Yacht Club is a proprietary club and membership is offered by invitation only. “We welcome all interested parties who meet our selection criteria. One of the key criteria for membership selection is the appropriateness of the vessels owned by the interested parties,” says Charlotte Ho, Director of Hospitality Marketing and Membership.

“All potential members and their yachts will be considered with respect to, for instance, the club’s rules and regulations, and other regulations and requirements of the authorities.”

As well as transfers to and from Discovery Bay Marina and a concierge service, Lantau Yacht Club members can enjoy a series of special offers and exclusive access to facilities in Discovery Bay, all owned and operated by HKR.

These include the 27-hole Discovery Bay Golf Club, sports and leisure facilities at Discovery Bay Recreation Club, the infinity pool at Club Siena and the Spa, and delicacies at the Auberge Discovery Bay seaside resort hotel.

Apart from golf and swimming, Discovery Bay’s recreational offerings include fitness centres, tennis, squash, basketball, climbing, table tennis, snooker, 10-pin bowling, children’s play areas, dance, indoor jacuzzi, sauna, steam rooms, mah-jong/card room and reading rooms. There’s even a horse-drawn carriage ride, while a new indoor ice rink will open soon.

“The new marina further enhances the image of Discovery Bay as an upscale resort-style community,” Lee says. “It will also benefit local businesses by attracting more visitors and crew.”

Hong Kong Disneyland is among nearby attractions, while south Lantau is lined with nice beaches. The north of the island is home to Hong Kong International Airport and the new Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, a symbol of the city’s increased connectivity to mainland China.

Lee expects Lantau Yacht Club to lure visiting superyachts to Hong Kong, which he believes will become more popular as cruising regulations ease in mainland China.

“Lantau is a gateway to mainland China and one of the best transit locations for yachts cruising in Asia or en route to China for sightseeing or supplies. Yachting in Asia is benefiting from the growth of wealth in the region, particularly in mainland China, and Hong Kong’s proximity will help it attract more yachts,” Lee says.

Lantau Yacht Club (“LYC”), the latest marina project in Hong Kong in decades, is gaining spotlight in the yachting industry as Hong Kong’s new superyacht hub.

About nine months into the soft opening of the LYC Marina, over a dozen yachts are now berthing in this world-class marina, the majority being superyachts of over 25 metres in length. Among them are premium models of luxury yacht brands, owned by LYC members, including Pershing 140, Ferretti’s Custom Line Navetta 30, and Princess X95, all of which are firsts in Asia, making LYC a backdrop for superyacht showcase unprecedented in Hong Kong.

A New Chapter Unfolds – Clubhouse Opened!

Built according to the highest standard, LYC’s typhoon-sheltered Marina offers 148 berths ranging from 10m to 60m and is the first yacht club in Hong Kong capable of accommodating superyachts of up to about 100m in length. The face-lifted LYC Clubhouse, cozy and chic, is now welcoming members and guests – Caffè Napoli serves mainly modern Western cuisine with a few Asian delights; Entertainment Room is tailored for private gatherings and the seaside lawn, spacious and picturesque, is perfect for hosting outdoor events. Different categories of memberships, including Corporate Membership, Individual Membership, as well as Visiting Membership are available to cater for both local and visiting yachts.

Welcome Visiting Yachts for Staycation or Temporary Berthing

While the Covid-19 pandemic took its toll on the general economy across the globe, the yachting arena in Asia and Hong Kong is encountering something quite different. Yacht brands and agents have recorded hiking or even record sales in Hong Kong in 2020. Yachting activities have not waned but gained popularity instead.

“We expect as the Covid-19 pandemic comes down and border restrictions loosened, there will be more inter-continent cruising activities. LYC, as a redeveloped marina, has berths available for existing and prospective yacht owners, as well as the capacity to welcome visiting yachts from abroad. Also, yacht owners who were not able to acquire an additional yacht or upgrade his yacht before due to the lack of moorings may now reconsider the purchase. What’s more, yacht owners looking for ‘yachting staycation’ to try out new marinas are welcome to come to LYC on a visiting member basis,” said Ms Charlotte Ho, Director of Hospitality Marketing and Membership of Auberge Hospitality.

LYC was honoured to be the event partner of the Ferretti Yachts’ media event on 29 April 2021, where about 10 media representatives were invited for a tour at LYC. The media representatives, together with the Consul General of Italy in Hong Kong, Mr Clemente Contestabile, and the President of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and Macao, Mr Ivano Poma, hopped onto LYC member’s yacht, the first Custom Line Navetta 30 in Asia, and all were amazed by the ground-breaking space utilisation and design concept.

With LYC being fully operational, LYC is looking forward to more collaboration with yacht brands, agents and other industry stakeholders to organise yachting events in the talk-of-the-town venue, to promote the yachting lifestyle and Hong Kong as a preferred yachting destination.
