The partnership was also announced on Twitter by the fashion house itself, writing only: “Continuing to explore the Metaverse, the House comes together with @yugalabs. Stay tuned as a new narrative takes shape, blurring the boundaries between the physical and digital.”

Gucci also shared a photo of a Gucci and Yuga Labs-branded bottle being held in a digital hand, perhaps a first look at one of their digital designs.

The news comes on the same day as another major company—Disney—is moving in a decidedly different direction on its metaverse work. The Wall Street Journal reported today that the entertainment giant is shutting down its metaverse division and laying off all 50 employees associated with it. These are part of broader layoffs—roughly 7,000 employees are expected to be affected—but signify a lack of confidence in the metaverse market nonetheless.

On the flip side, Robert Triefus, Gucci’s senior executive vice president, corporate and brand strategy, shared a statement indicating excitement for new developments in the world of web3.

In 2022, Gucci first cemented itself as an early adopter of the metaverse with spaces on several digital platforms: “Gucci Vault Land” on The Sandbox, a world populated with NFTs about the brand’s history, and “Gucci Town” on Roblox , a virtual community where you can dress in Gucci clothes, shop in Gucci stores, and gather at a Gucci-logo piazza.

Now, Gucci is doubling down on its commitment to digital real estate with its new Yuga Labs partnership, signaling that they believe in its power not just now but several years into the future. Gucci will reportedly appear on Otherside as soon as next week.

Gucci Teams Up With Company Behind Bored Ape Yacht Club

A digital ape hand holds a small bottle bearing the Gucci logo.

Gucci is strengthening its ties to web3.

On Monday, the luxury brand announced a multi-year partnership with Yuga Labs, the web3 company behind several well-known NFT collections including Bored Ape Yacht Club, CryptoPunks, Meebits and the narrative NFT project 10KTF. It also runs Otherside, a Bored Ape-themed virtual world and game.

The deal is meant to extend engagement between each company’s communities “by exploring the intersection between fashion and entertainment in the Metaverse,” they said in a release.

“We are excited to unveil this multifaceted partnership with Yuga Labs, a leader and creative pioneer in web3,” Robert Triefus, Gucci’s senior executive vice president, corporate and brand strategy, and chief executive of Gucci Vault & Metaverse Ventures, said in a statement. “This will give us an active role in Otherside and 10KTF’s continuing narrative, unfolding in multiple forms.”

Gucci collaborated with 10KTF last year for its Gucci Grail project, which entailed 10KTF’s “digital artisan,” Wagmi-san, crafting clothing and accessories used to personalise NFTs with the designs of Gucci’s then-creative director, Alessandro Michele.

“We’re looking forward to showcasing how that partnership extends to endless opportunities in Otherside,” Michael Figge, Yuga Labs’ chief creative officer, said in a release.

Gucci’s participation in Otherside is set to begin this week.

A cartoon version of an older gentelman stands in what looks like a tailor shop surrounded by Gucci clothing and accessories.

Triefus hinted at the news on stage last week speaking at the BoF Professional Summit: An Inflection Point in Fashion Tech . Gucci, he indicated, still sees a long-term opportunity in web3 for building community, encouraging customer loyalty and ultimately generating revenue. He described the early frenzy around NFTs as a “wild west” period and views the market’s downturn from its highs in late 2021 as a “correction.” Now it’s in a more sensible place, he added, and Gucci would capitalise on the expertise of creatives through strategic partnerships.

Yuga Labs was founded in 2021 and created Bored Ape Yacht Club, which grew into one of the most successful NFT projects. It later acquired the rights to CryptoPunks, Meebits and 10KTF. Last March it raised $450 million at a valuation of $4 billion.

Why Some Virtual Experiences Succeed and Others Become Digital Ghost Towns

More than a year since fashion brands started jumping into virtual environments like Roblox, they face a new challenge: keeping users coming back as they try to turn their marketing into sales.

The Secrets to a Successful NFT Drop

The reasons some fashion NFTs are successes and others fall flat goes beyond having big, recognisable brands involved and comes down to factors like their creativity, audience and value for the price.

What Fashion Needs to Know About the NFT Market Rollercoaster

NFTs right now look both like an opportunity fashion brands are just starting to tap and a short-lived fad already entering terminal decline. Which is it?

Gucci teams up with Bored Ape's Yuga Labs to bring luxury fashion to the metaverse

Italian fashion house Gucci has entered into a partnership with Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) creator Yuga Labs to produce a luxury fashion crossover into the metaverse.

The partnership will see web3 content creator Yuga Labs team up with Gucci to create physical pieces of jewellery which are connected to NFTs that will exist within the BAYC associated 'Otherside' metaverse.

The first piece will be the KodaPendant; it's a solid silver pendant that relates to Yuga Labs’ new alien-themed metaverse game 'Otherside'.

The Otherside contains a mysterious alien species known as 'Koda', and the new Gucci/ Yuga Labs created pendant is an image of one of these virtual creatures.

Each physical piece of jewellery is connected to an NFT, that will unlock numerous perks for the owner within the game.

A total of 3,333 KodaPendants NFTs will be offered for sale starting on Thursday, April 6, and at no extra charge, each NFT holder will be able to claim the connected piece of physical jewellery from Gucci later in the year.

The pendant will bear the inscription "GG," which is gamer slang for "good game," and will also have a unique edition number engraved on the reverse side.

The physical pieces of jewellery will be posted to residents of specific countries only; including the US, Canada, the UK, the majority of EU nations, as well some the Gulf states, including Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

NFT holders resident in African, Central American, and in South American countries will not receive the physical pendant.

In the long-term, the partnership between Gucci and Yuga Labs aims to explore the intersection of fashion and entertainment within the metaverse, and "blur the boundaries between the physical and digital", according to a recent tweet from the luxury brand.

Gucci and metaverse fashion

Gucci has ventured into the web3 space before. In February 2022, the brand acquired a quantity of land in the metaverse game, The Sandbox , with the intention of exploring and hosting virtual fashion experiences.

In June 2021 Gucci invested $25,000 in native tokens from the NFT and crypto-art marketplace SuperRare , enabling the company to take part in the decentralised autonomous organisation and establish a presence on a digital art platform.

What is Bored Ape Yacht Club and its parent company Yuga Labs?

The Bored Ape Yacht Club is a collection of non-fungible tokens launched in April 2021 by Yuga Labs.

The collection consists of 10,000 unique digital artworks, each featuring a distinct and artistically designed cartoon ape with various traits, accessories, and backgrounds.

Each Bored Ape NFT serves as a membership token, granting its holder access to an online community and various benefits, such as virtual events and parties, airdrops, and other digital assets.

The Bored Ape Yacht Club has garnered significant attention and attracted high-profile collectors and celebrities, leading to substantial increases in the value of these NFTs, however, after the succession of crypto collapses in 2022 the value of each BAYC NFT plummeted.

BAYC is still an influential part of the NFT and crypto-art landscape, inspiring other NFT projects and playing a significant role in popularising the concept of NFTs as digital collectibles and status symbols.

Each BAYC NFT is deployed on the Ethereum ( ETH-USD ) blockchain.

Gucci To Take ‘Active Role’ in Bored Ape Yacht Club Metaverse

Gucci and BAYC’s Yuga Labs are now formally working together to explore how fashion can influence the metaverse

article-image

Shutterstock.com/Studio Barcelona, modified by Blockworks

Gucci is set to take “an active role” in the upcoming Bored Ape Yacht Club metaverse offering, Otherside, after striking a multi-year strategic partnership with creator Yuga Labs.

The Italian luxury fashion house aims to formally join Yuga Labs in exploring the “intersection between fashion and entertainment in the metaverse,” Business of Fashion reported.

Gucci had already worked with Yuga Labs’ 10KTF project, the NFT-powered browser game created by digital artist Beeple, in which players deck their avatars out in clothes tied to digital collectibles. Gucci issued branded 10KTF outfits in Mar. 2022, with Yuga Labs acquiring 10KTF by September.

Yuga Labs also manages NFT projects MeeBits and CryptoPunks, which the Florida-headquartered startup bought from Larva Labs last year.

“Existing in a world where physical and digital realms collide, and are shaped by creative storytelling, the first activation in the partnership will give a glimpse of Gucci’s participation in Otherside, Yuga’s gamified, metaRPG universe, beginning this week,” Gucci said in a press release.

Robert Triefus, chief executive of Gucci Vault & Metaverse Ventures, reportedly said the partnership “will give us an active role in Otherside and 10KTF’s continuing narrative, unfolding in multiple forms.” Blockworks has reached out to Gucci and Yuga Labs for comment.

Triefus reportedly said 2021 hype in the NFT market has eased. And since it’s now in a more “sensible place,” Gucci intends to “capitalise on the the expertise of creatives.”

Gucci created its metaverse division about six months ago. A top executive at Gucci owner Kering previously said the company wants to be a pioneer in the Web3 and NFT industry, Vogue Business reported.

“Luxury has a role to play. There’s a real opportunity for us to create digital products that would be ways to express our houses,” chief client and digital officer Grégory Boutté told the outlet.

“Our vision is around two pillars: metaverse and Web3. We think the metaverse is already here, the best evidence being video games. Some 2.5 billion people use video games. These virtual worlds will be more and more immersive and present in our lives,” Boutté said.

Gucci began accepting ApeCoin (APE), which is set for use across Yuga Labs’ in-development metaverse offerings, at some of its US retail stores last August.

We believe crypto market participants overlook Hivemapper’s fundamental potential due to a poor understanding of both the niche map data market and Hivemapper’s positioning relative to incumbents. Hivemapper’s token model catalyzes both a cost and product advantage via unmatched map freshness and near real-time accuracy, which is its wedge into a market characterized by stale data and high data collection costs. Its current and potential future product suite may represent one of the strongest possibilities for PMF in crypto today.

For the owner of Bored Ape Yacht Club, the metaverse looks Gucci

For the owner of Bored Ape Yacht Club, the metaverse looks Gucci

Yuga Labs  is diving into the world of metaverse fashion. The parent company of the Bored Ape Yacht Club  NFT collection has inked a partnership with Italian fashion house Gucci .

Gucci announced the partnership with a tweet. The luxury brand said that its metaverse presence would take the form of a “new narrative” capable of “blurring the boundaries between the physical and digital.”

Continuing to explore the Metaverse, the House comes together with @yugalabs . Stay tuned as a new narrative takes shape, blurring the boundaries between the physical and digital. pic.twitter.com/v60mzcgqqY Subscribe for daily Tubefilter Top Stories Subscribe — gucci (@gucci) March 27, 2023

The partnership will target the intersection of high fashion and digital collectibles, which is familiar terrain for both Gucci and Yuga Labs. Gucci is one of several fashion houses that has dropped official NFT collections , while the Bored Apes owner has used a $450 million investment to build a metaverse world called  Otherside . The trailer for that venture included a potion that resembles the one in Gucci’s tweet.

Yuga Labs has continued to establish its metaverse presence despite turbulent conditions in the crypto industry. The first crashes that triggered the current “crypto winter” began just a few months after Yuga announced its $450 million funding round. The interceding months have been filled with exchange collapses and numerous lawsuits , but Yuga has persevered. Through court battles and racism allegations , the Web3 company has maintained strong NFT sales figures .

With its push into fashion, Yuga will expand into an industry that has embraced NFTs. Fashion houses big and small have hosted metaverse fashion shows, where real-life threads are replaced with digital collectibles. The team behind the Metaverse Fashion Week recently announced that they would host the event across multiple metaverse-based platforms. That decision is a sign of an industry undergoing consolidation, and Yuga’s Gucci deal will continue to bring together Web3’s biggest players.

Gucci is now accepting BAYC’s ApeCoin for in-store purchases

The Bored Ape Yacht Club’s official cryptocurrency can now be used for your designer needs.

SHANGHAI, CHINA - JULY 9, 2020 - Citizens at a Gucci store in Shanghai, China, July 9, 2020. (Photo ...

Have more ApeCoin than you know what to do with? How about heading over to the Gucci store for a new bag? The luxury fashion house announced it will now be accepting ApeCoin as a form of payment through BitPay’s blockchain tech. You can use the coin for in-store purchases in select boutiques in the United States.

ApeCoin, the official cryptocurrency for the Bored Ape Yacht Club, is just the latest cryptocurrency to be accepted by Gucci. The Italian brand started accepting Bitcoin and Ethereum earlier this year in addition to altcoins like Dogecoin. In order to use crypto in-stores, Gucci customers are sent an email with a scannable QR code.

But why ApeCoin? — Gucci’s decision to accept the cryptocurrency is a curious one considering ApeCoin is currently ranked 31st by CoinMarketCap . Ever since it launched back in March, the coin has struggled to garner much long-lasting momentum. Even during its debut, the token’s value plummeted within hours and has fluctuated since. At the time of writing, it sits at $6.74 per coin.

“We added ApeCoin and Euro Coin because customers of our luxury merchant partners asked for it,” BitPay CEO Stephen Pair said in a release. “They asked, and we delivered.” It’s worth noting that Bored Ape Yacht Club co-founder Guy Oseary already has close ties with Gucci , meaning their business partnership may have been a natural next step. Oseary also sits on 10KTF and ApeCoin’s Yuga Labs leadership teams.

Going digital — The payment update is just the latest digital move for Gucci. Although some brands and celebrities have embraced the metaverse through one-off NFT collections and Roblox partnerships , Gucci seems to be incorporating web3 into its entire business model. As Vogue Business ’s Senior Innovation Editor Maghan McDowell pointed out , “Already, 70 percent of Gucci’s full directly operated network in the U.S. accepts payment in 10 cryptocurrencies, with remaining stores coming the first week of August.”

In June, the brand announced a $25,000 investment in NFT marketplace SuperRare’s decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) and launched the Gucci Town metaverse world on Roblox in May. Gucci has also launched “ Next 100 Years of Gucci ” NFT installments showcasing the digital artwork of various artists with a fresh take on what the future of the brand will look like outside of physical fashion.

Whether or not a further Gucci collab with the Bored Ape Yacht Club is in the works remains to be seen. Either way, ApeCoin may just be your ticket to more Gucci in your closet.

Gucci and Bored Ape Yacht Club collaborates to merge high-end fashion with digital art

Gucci has formed a multi-year strategic partnership with Yuga Labs, the creator of Bored Ape Yacht Club. As part of this collection, Gucci plans to play a significant and engaged role in Otherside, the upcoming metaverse offering of Bored Ape Yacht Club.

The collaboration introduced a collection of limited-edition merchandise that features the apes, that consist of clothing, accessories, and other items, all of which are adorned with images of the Bored Apes.

"The Italian luxury fashion house aims to formally join Yuga Labs in exploring the "intersection between fashion and entertainment in the metaverse," Business of Fashion reported.

In March 2022, Gucci collaborated with Yuga Labs on the 10KTF project, a NFT-powered browser game created by digital artist Beetle. The game allowed players to customise their avatars with clothes connected to digital collectibles. Since then, Gucci released branded 10KTF outfits as part of the collaboration. By September of the same year, Yuga Labs had acquired 10KTF.

Throughout last year, Yuga Labs had purchased MeeBits and CryptoPunks, two NFT projects, from Larva Labs. Yuga Labs currently manages these projects in addition to Bored Ape Yacht Club.

"Existing in a world where physical and digital realms collide, and are shaped by creative storytelling, the first activation in the partnership will give a glimpse of Gucci's participation in Otherside, Yuga's gamified, metaRPG universe, beginning this week," Gucci said in a press release.

According to reports, Robert Triefus, the CEO of Gucci Vault & Metaverse Ventures, stated that this partnership will enable Gucci to have an active role in shaping the narrative of Otherside and 10KTF, as it unfolds in various forms.

"Luxury has a role to play. There's a real opportunity for us to create digital products that would be ways to express our houses," chief client and digital officer Gregory Butte told the outlet.

"Our vision is around two pillars: metaverse and Web3. We think the metaverse is already here, the best evidence being video games. Some 2.5 billion people use video games. These virtual worlds will be more and more immersive and present in our lives," Boutte said.

The collaboration has been met with excitement from both the fashion and NFT communities. It represents a new frontier in the world of digital art and highlights the growing intersection between blockchain technology and high-end fashion.

Adidas reveals new NFT project with Bored Ape Yacht Club

Sneakerheads have long been tech trendsetters, from social drops to AR try-on. The latest land-grab for cultural cachet? The metaverse.

After weeks of planted leaks, Adidas is ready to unveil a broad metaverse strategy that partners with some of the hottest names in the fledgling metaverse community and leans heavily on the hypebeast playbook. The complex project encompasses limited-edition drops and scarcity (NFTs grant access to physical products); logos with cultural currency (including profile pictures, or PFPs, of Bored Apes, whose high-profile owners include Jimmy Fallon and Steph Curry); exclusivity and community (access to metaverse experiences); and zeitgeisty collaborations (Adidas is tapping into existing communities with in-built hype).

Nike has bought the two-year-old “Supreme of digital fashion” for an undisclosed sum. The move brings the brand further into the metaverse.

Adidas Originals, the fashion and lifestyle subdivision of the German sportswear giant, is launching an NFT collection of both physical and digital products, sold on 17 December and available in 2022, Vogue Business can exclusively reveal. The collection is being revealed through digital and physical comic books, created in collaboration with a host of trending metaverse players: PFP phenomenon Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), NFT influencer Gmoney and comics series Punks Comics.

The Adidas NFTs are available via a metaverse destination on the Adidas website. At press time, the price had yet to be determined, but was expected to be comparable to premium fashion prices (a spokesperson said, “we are still fine-tuning certain elements to ensure that when they drop, it’s the best possible solution for our consumers”.) The people who are already members of the Adidas drop app, called Confirmed, get a special NFT badge (called a POAP, or proof of attendance protocol), to establish their early presence; only 8,000 were issued. This gives them early access to buy the “Into the metaverse” NFT. Owners of the NFTs, of which an undisclosed amount will be issued, receive digital items to wear in metaverse world The Sandbox (with other platforms in the works), the exclusive ability to purchase physical products to wear in real life, and access to special digital and physical experiences. Adidas also purchased 144 parcels of virtual land in The Sandbox, to which it will add content and experiences.

“It’s a flip of the normal business model where we make stuff and hope people will buy it,” says Adidas senior director of digital growth Tareq Nazlawy. “You're not just buying the product. You're becoming a member of this community.”

The metaverse is considered integral to the next phase of the internet, often called Web3, or Web 3.0. It is closely associated with the concept of the “open web”, whose principles include decentralised information and the same type of anti-establishment sentiment that bred blockchain and cryptocurrencies. However, already, exclusive clubs and NFT influencers reign supreme, and communities often try to sniff out imposters taking advantage of the cryptorich. To that end, Adidas tapped into a zeitgeisty group of partners to help shape its journey into the metaverse.

Perhaps most recognisable is the Bored Ape Yacht Club, in which membership is granted by owning one of 10,000 ape profile picture NFTs, which now cost at least $200,000 each. The profile picture of the unique Ape isn’t the only value; ownership perks include access to product drops and events. Adidas also purchased an Adidas-clad ape named Indigo Herz. Gmoney, meanwhile, is a widely followed crypto investor who only uses that alias and uses a Cryptopunk avatar with an orange beanie that he bought in January for about $170,000. And finally, the Punks Comics is an NFT comic book series that features Ape and Punk characters; Adidas collaborated on a new edition, which will feature co-created products, as well as classic sneaker styles Campus, Forum and Superstar, to promote the collaboration, in addition to a video.

Gmoney’s signature orange beanie will be featured digitally in the comic and will also be sold as a physical item of clothing. Other items, including a tracksuit and hoodie, will follow, in both digital and physical form.

Partners like Gmoney, Punks Comic and BAYC play an important role in helping Adidas enter the metaverse “in a credible way”, says Erika Sneyd-Wykes, vice president of brand communications at Adidas Originals. Punks founder Sean Gearin has an ability to create intellectual property around crypto-native projects, while Gmoney is likely to attract a larger audience, Sneyd-Wykes says, as he is known for advocating for an open and inclusive metaverse, accessible to everyone. “There’s definitely a gold rush right now,” she acknowledges. “But we want to be super-thoughtful on how we do it and hold the gate open for folks who are adding value.” Sneyd-Wykes adds that the chosen partners will help Adidas “add to the shared community values” of Web3.

Adidas is promoting its NFT collection with digital and physical comic books.

They’re also a way for brands like Adidas and Nike to remain “cool”. Earlier this week, Nike announced that it had acquired buzzy metaverse-centric startup Rtkft , on the heels of opening a virtual Nikeland in metaverse platform Roblox. In less than two years, Rtfkt has become known as the “Supreme of digital fashion,” including $90,000 digital sneakers last October and $3 million worth of NFTs selling out in seven minutes this spring. A recent avatar partnership with artist Takashi Murakami has garnered nearly $65 million in transaction volume. Acquiring Rtfkt “signals Nike’s desire to continue to be leaders in the Web3 era,” Cathy Hackl, chief metaverse officer of the Futures Intelligence Group, recently told Vogue Business .

By partnering with existing players, legacy sportswear giants are piggybacking on existing communities, rather than creating their own PFP projects or standalone virtual worlds. Even winning over high-profile collaborators is a bit of a flex; Gmoney, for example, often turns down collaboration requests from brands.

This sets Adidas apart, says Punks Comic’s Gearin. “I’ve seen other companies come into the space in more of a traditional corporate format, and that’s not embraced by communities in the Web3 environment — [which] is about curiosity and wanting to create unique things and doing it in a way that creates value not just for yourself but the broader community,” he says.

Nike’s metaverse projects share a similar sentiment, but the differences in execution illustrate just how unchartered this virtual terrain still is: as of publication, Nike has yet to mint its own NFT, but in its free “Nikeland” on metaverse platform Roblox, visitors can compete in games and try on iconic Nike, Jordan Brand and Converse pieces in a digital showroom. Nike has also recently indicated its intent to sell virtual branded sneakers and apparel through several recent trademark applications .

Progress has been far faster than precedent would suggest, leading to a hype quotient in which sneakers and streetwear thrive. The Adidas project took nine months to develop, meaning conversations were in progress by March. The first luxury NFT — an art film from Gucci — was announced in May. Since then, momentum is gathering pace across the broader fashion and beauty industries. Louis Vuitton , Burberry , Nars , Givenchy and Clinique have all issued NFTs. Balmain has launched three NFT projects in just a few months.

Money and market value

The metaverse represents an attractive space for future growth for brands, with metaverse gaming and NFTs forecast to constitute 10 per cent of the luxury goods market by 2030 — a €50 billion revenue opportunity, according to investment banking firm Morgan Stanley.

Pricing digital items, including NFTs, can be tricky: over-pricing them risks alienating an eager audience. Under-pricing them, or leaving them to auction, risks the appearance of devaluing the brand. That’s partly why Clinqiue and Louis Vuitton elected to give away, rather than sell, their NFT collections; why Gucci and Ralph Lauren price digital items in Roblox far less than they might command. (Nike adopts a similar strategy in its physical sneaker drops.)

Even at this late stage, Adidas is still finalising a pricing structure. “If you benchmark it against a Bored Ape NFT, for example, you might be spending tens of thousands of dollars to gain access,” says Nazlawy of Adidas. “Our NFT will be priced a bit more inclusively than that; it’s closer to premium fashion price points.”

Once someone acquires an Adidas NFT, they can price and sell it at whatever price the market commands; access would then transfer to the new owner. This can be a clever way for brands to gauge interest and build hype; Gucci’s Roblox bags, now famously, ultimately resold for more than their physical counterparts, while Burberry’s NFT characters for Blankos Block Party were being sold at eight times their original value. Nazlawy points out the crypto market’s similarities to streetwear, with an interest in “collecting, trading and flexing”.

NFTs evolve in utility

NFTs first emerged in the form of static digital art and collectibles, and quickly drew fatigue and confusion as to one one does with a digital certificate of ownership. “From the collectibles side, the market is already collapsing,” warns Matt Powell, vice president and senior industry advisor for market research firm NPD Group. “From the authentication side, there are simpler and less costly — to the environment — methods to verify products. Collecting things that have no intrinsic value, beyond speculation, seems dangerous. The avatar space would also appeal to a very small segment of the market, just like collectible sneakers, which also appears to be waning.”

“Everybody wants to jump on the [NFT] train, but nobody understands where it’s going. Don’t be in it for the sake of being in it,” advises KPMG's blockchain leader Arun Ghosh.

Adidas is aiming for its NFTs to have utility and boost community.

The next wave of brand NFTs, therefore, are dynamic — owning them offers an ongoing set of perks, both specified and promised. Clinique and Balmain’s recent NFTs, for example, offer perks that are introduced over time. Gmoney says many brands make the mistake of viewing NFTs as just static digital collectibles. “NFTs are more than just art,” he says. “They will be pervasive throughout culture in the near to long-term future.” Adidas wants its NFTs to have utility, which helps build a sense of community with the brand — at least, as long as that community holds on to the access-granting NFT.

Through the metaverse and virtual spaces, brands can lean further into gamification, says Chris Twining, global digital account director at Dentsu, who points to Nike’s recent Roblox space . There’s also an opportunity for brands to drop exclusive products that won’t be snapped up by bots . It’s an approach that fashion designer Telfar Clemens has already taken with his new channel, Telfar TV . Brands can reevaluate what their membership models look like through token or NFT ownership, Twining says. “When you think about how important Adidas is to the culture of streetwear, I can see them building it out around users with a POAP to exclusively access events in both the physical and digital world.”

Adidas plans to build out the utility of its NFT to offer perks for its community over time. “One of the amazing things about this technology is that you don’t have to decide all at once. This is having a ticket that grants you entry,” Nazlawy says.

Even without clear perks, Adidas stans are all-in. Adidas first signalled its intention to enter the metaverse with the POAPs on its app on 17 November; 8,000 free Adidas digital tokens of unspecified value were offered as a reward. “Nobody knew what it was for, yet people were already speculating on its value. There’s a lot of trading going on already in the secondary market, even though nobody knows what it does. That blew us away completely,” says Nazlawy.

Expect many of those experiences on The Sandbox. “It’s going to be a space that will sit at the cross-section of culture where people can come together over sport, entertainment or music,” says Andrea Nieto of the Design Futures team at Adidas. “It’s going to be our playground to test and be creative with our community.”

Kevin Hart Reportedly Takes Major Loss Selling Bored Ape NFT for Fraction of Purchase Price

The comedian and actor bought the once-prized NFT in January 2022 for $200,000.

Kevin Hart has reportedly sold his Bored Ape NFT for a significantly lower price than he bought it for two years ago.

According to data from NFT marketplace Blur, obtained by ZyCrypto , the NFT previously owned by Hart was sold on Monday for 13.65 ETH, or $47,000. The actor and comedian spent a reported 79.5 ETH, or $200,000, on Bored Ape Yacht Club #9258 in Jan. 2022.

The Block reported the sale at the slightly lower total of 13.26 ETH, or $46,200.

Both sites are reporting a loss of just over 80 percent for the sale of the once-prized possession from the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection.

DappGambl released a study last year showing nearly all non-fungible tokens were just "worthless." Researchers looked into the value of just over 73,000 NFT collections and found about 95 percent had a "floor price of zero” ETH.

"Of the 73,257 NFT collections we identified, an eye-watering 69,795 of them have a market cap of 0 Ether (ETH)," the study reads. "This statistic effectively means that 95% of people holding NFT collections are currently holding onto worthless investments. Having looked into those figures, we would estimate that 95% to include over 23 million people who's investments are now worthless."

The Justin Bieber -owned Bored Ape #3001 was valued last year at $59,000, according to CNBC . The singer bought the NFT in January 2022 for 500 ETH, or $1.29 million.

Business Insider reported at the top of 2022 that the marketplace for non-fungible tokens rose to $41 billion in the previous year. The collection leading the NFT surge at the time with a 7-day sales volume of $206.4 million was the Bored Ape Yacht Club.
