Preliminary "Soul Searching"

As everything else on this web site, the information you're about to read is 100% genuine. It is based upon dozens of authentic experiences coming from past and current charter boat owners. And by the way: The writer of this section is a 3-time charter boat owner himself for a total of 15 years! We will do our best efforts to convey information that is as factual and objective as possible, with all the practical pros and cons. It is very important to understand that this is not a negative approach against charter companies . On the contrary, it is the charter companies that provide to the well-informed buyer/owner the opportunity to fulfill at least some of his objectives or sailing dreams in reasonable conditions, and enjoy one of the greatest lifestyle experiences there is.

So...You have been chartering for several years, and loving every minute of it. But now you've caught the bug: You've been dreaming about owning your own charter yacht. You had many conversations with your wife/husband and the kids. You checked your finances a dozen times, and you said to yourself: Hey! I can do that! Finally, you've made up your mind and you've announced to the family: "That's it! We're doing it. WE'RE BUYING A BOAT".

Now comes the hard part: How, and which company are you going to do this with? So many offerings, one more tempting than the other — you are getting more confused by the minute. You see, charter companies have one thing in common: They all carry lots of promises. But as you can imagine, they don't all equally deliver.

Relax! We're here to help you sort out this information overload. We will tell you everything you need to know about the reality of charter yacht ownership, including what charter companies will not necessarily volunteer to tell you.  Let's start!

The Good News

Let me first say that ever since I purchased my first boat in 1995 (a Jeanneau 52 with one of the big charter companies), and all the way to 2010, I have, of course, experienced some frustrations, some bad years with lower than expected charter income and some headaches of different varieties. However, to this day, I do not regret for one minute buying my 3 boats (I am now ready for my fourth one!) It has given me a great opportunity to:

- Go cruising extensively in the most exotic sailing grounds in the world, without having to worry about the maintenance of the vessel: showing up is basically all I had to do! - Enjoy a great activity with my son, and make him love it; bring him closer to me while teaching him a lot about seamanship, marine science and the environment. - Make a lot of great new friends - Own a boat largely paid for by charter income after years of enjoyment.

Not bad, right? In other words, would I give up the sunsets at anchor in the Virgin Islands with a nice cool drink? Or the phenomenal sailing in the Caribbean Trade Winds?  NO WAY. I can't think of anything I could have spent my money on that would have given me so much enjoyment and fulfillment over the years. It is a great experience, which I will renew as long as I'll be able to. It's just that before signing on the dotted line and engage in this large financial commitment, there are some caution signs one should know about, in order to deal more smoothly with this whole process.

Is Buying a Boat An Investment?

First and foremost, (although less and less charter companies try to present that argument), if you have been led to believe that this is a profitable investment in any way, we've got some news for you: Buying and owning a boat is anything but that, not by any stretch of imagination. However, if done the proper way, buying a charter boat may be a way to:

- Significantly minimize your financial exposure. - Enjoy sailing in fabulous and remote sailing grounds that you probably would not get to see otherwise, and at a greatly reduced cost. - Benefit from all of the above with much less headache than with traditional ownership. (Note: We wrote less headache, not no headache) - Incidentally, satisfy your ego: Telling your acquaintances that you own a yacht in the Caribbean, the Med or in the Pacific is a guaranteed attention-getter!

The Homework

As for any large expenditure, you must do some significant homework beforehand. And remember: Do not get emotional about this. Deal with facts and numbers only.

1. Preliminary Tests You must ask yourself 3 important questions. Depending upon you answer, ownership may or may not be for you.

Question 1 :  Do I intend to keep the boat at the end of the charter management contract, usually 4 to 6 years? Or:.. Will I likely roll over to a new boat with the same charter company?

-  You answered YES: GOOD . Charter boat ownership is in effect a great way to enjoy sailing for a few years without major expenses, AND own the boat at the end of the contract while having the charter income pay for some or all of the mortgage. (More about income and finances later). - You answered NO: NOT GREAT . If you do not intend to keep your boat at the end of the management contract, or trade-in and roll over to a new boat with the same company, then you'll probably want to resell her. If so, here is the skinny on what some charter companies might tell you:

- After 5 years, boats keep a resale value of up to 70%, and... - Our brokerage company will help you sell the boat.

The reality - What charter companies/brokers will not tell you: - Selling a used boat can sometimes be a long, and frustrating experience. Some models re-sell more easily than others. - You seldom, if ever, get the price you thought you would—most definitely not 70% after 5 years or more. - You will get several low-ball offers that will insult your intelligence. - Your wait may be even longer when the brokerage house you chose has 8 or 10 charter boats similar to yours for sale. - If the boat has not been sold before the end of the contract, you will have to keep paying the mortgage and the boat expenses without earning any income on the boat any more. A very tough position to be in!

Solutions to explore : - Do not buy a boat and keep chartering as in the past. - At the end of the contract, move your boat to a second-tier fleet. There are some very good ones, and that is a very good, cost-effective strategy while waiting for the boat to be sold. - Find a charter company that facilitates a trade-up to a new boat. Guaranteed buy-backs are not offered by anyone on the industry. Some companies try to address all the inconveniences above and are offering options like selling the boat without charging a commission, if you buy a new boat from them (Dream Yacht offers that option).

Question 2 :  Do I intend to use the boat extensively during the contract (like, 3 weeks+ a year)?

- You answered YES: GOOD again. Significant use of the boat will make ownership less expensive than simple chartering, not to mention the extensive enjoyment. - You answered NO: NOT GREAT . If you do not intend to use your boat a lot, but have answered YES to the first question, you may proceed further with careful consideration, and make sure you consider all negative factors closely.

Now,  If you answered NO to BOTH questions 1 & 2, then I seriously suggest you reconsider. You're much better off continuing to charter as in the past since charter boat ownership does not present any advantage in your situation, except satisfaction of your ego (see above). It has been recognized over and over by charter boat owners that ownership does not make sense (financially or otherwise) if one does not use the boat much or keep her after the contract.

Question 3 : Do I need to borrow over the reasonable ratios in regard to all my assets in order to afford the boat?

If it is the case: DO NOT DO IT. STOP READING RIGHT NOW AND FORGET IT! Alternatively, consider a smaller boat, until the numbers fit. Many owners find themselves "upside down" at the end of the contract, when they owe more money to the bank than the boat is really worth! Similarly, do not count on the boat income for anything else than paying down the mortgage every month. That would be a fatal mistake! In other words: You must apply all the charter income towards your mortgage or note, including any cash flow surplus you may get.

Last absolute death-trap to avoid at ANY COST: Using a mortgage that is for more than 12 years. Some salespersons (aka financial criminals) in the industry try to sell boats with TWENTY-YEAR mortgages, to make their proforma's cah flow look better. That is a GUARANTEE that you will be severely upside down on your mortgage. The dream boat adventure will then turn into one of your worst nightmares.

If you successfully passed your tests, you're in good shape! Now it's time to make choices.

2. Your Choices

We will assume here that you will acquire a bareboat (see bareboat vs. crewed discussion.) You have 3 main decisions to make: Which management company, which type of boat, and which location. But before we get into this, I strongly suggest you try to talk to current boat owners with the companies you have in mind, but preferably not the ones the company has pre-selected. To do that, you can hang out at major Boat Shows (Newport, RI, Annapolis, MD, Oakland, CA, etc.) and ask one of the people attending the management company booth to introduce you to a couple of current owners. (There are always some owners hanging out there.) They should be more than happy to do this and you will have the effect of surprise. And/or go on the Internet: Boating newsgroups (Sailonline forum   http://groups.yahoo.com/group/charterboatowners/   www.traveltalkonline.com) will help you find owners. Do it. You will learn a lot.

  The Charter Companies :  You will find lots of companies on the market, large to small. Here are the pros and cons for each.

Large Companies:  There are 3 large companies:

Dream Yacht Charter - About 950 boats 35 bases worldwide

Moorings - About 250 boats, 20 bases worldwide;

Sunsail - About 500 boats, 40 bases worldwide.

Note: Although they are distinct companies, Moorings and Sunsail now belong to the same  company (KKR), a large New York private equity firm. Moorings and Sunsail sell boats that are sort-off cookie-cutters (no customization allowed) and offers one management program. Dream Yachts lets owners buy their boat from several major brands and lets buyers customize their boat to their taste in many cases. It is currently the only charter company to offer this with a guaranteed income. They also offer 5 or 6 different management programs.

Pros : - Been around for a long time. - Relatively financially solid, but ask for recent financial statements anyway (not an easy one, but some companies volunteer it). -Large selection of boats. - Worldwide bases where you can sail boats similar to yours, using what veteran owners call "Reciprocals". Some companies (like Sunsail) even offer exchanges with land-based resorts. - The company will guarantee your income and will take care and pay for all the maintenance, docking, insurance, etc. You pay nothing. You can make a very accurate financial projection of where you'll be at the end of the contract. - Standardized maintenance and hurricane procedures. - Standardized, proven phase-out procedures. - If they go under, which is highly unlikely, you will sweat a little, but they will probably be bought out and you will not be left hanging.

Cons : - No flexibility if you want a boat model they do not offer, or if you want additional custom features or equipment on the yacht - except from Dream Yacht Charter. - Limited owner's use of the boat (9 to 12 weeks a year); - Customer service somewhat less personal, although Dream Yachts makes lots of efforts on this aspect, with smaller bases and easy access to management.

Medium and Small Companies The ones we like are Tortola Marine Management (TMM), Horizon Yacht Charters* and BVI Yacht Charters in the British Virgin Islands. CYOA in the US Virgin Islands. Typically, those companies have fleets of about 20 to 60 boats, a very close relationship with owners, and excellent customer service. * Recently, thanks to its collaboration with the German boat bulder Bavaria, Horizon has grown much larger and has opened several bases throughout the Caribbean and USA.

Pros - Customer service more personal and easier to get in touch with; - Concerns like Tortola Marine Management and Horizon voluntarily limit the bases fleets to a manageable size so they can take quality and personal care of their customers and boat owners; - Some have been in business for a long time. However, this is an active industry: Some companies might have a new management. Verify this. - More flexibility in choice of boats and equipment if you want a particular model; - Unlimited owner's use of the boat (except Horizon).

Cons - Financial status of the company has to be checked: If a small charter company goes belly-up, it will most probably disappear and leave you in a panic. However, the ones we show above have been in business for quite a long time. - No guaranteed income. Your financial projections always remain hypothetical. You will be hit hard on the income if another bad hurricane season hits the islands again. - Few locations- sometimes only one location offered; thus no other bases available for "reciprocal time"; - Maintenance and phase-out and hurricane procedures to be thoroughly checked.

Implications of Your Charter Company Choice The big guys (Dream Yacht, Moorings and Sunsail) typically offer: - Guaranteed income even if your boat never goes out on charter. Income typically equals 8 to 10% per year of the value of the boat new. - All maintenance and expenses paid by the company. You pay literally nothing. - Use of reciprocal charters in many other locations worldwide - Generous but limited owner's use: 9 to 12 weeks a year, with a limit on weeks in hi-season.

The smaller outfits typically offer: - Not-guaranteed , variable income equal to roughly 60 to 75% of the charter income; - Company performs the maintenance, but you (the owner) pay all expenses: you will be billed for maintenance, docking, insurance, etc. Those companies charge a mark-up on parts over cost. - Unlimited owners' use. - Few other locations geared to exchange programs.

Do you see where we are going here? I do not want to generalize because there are exceptions for everything. But in a nutshell, the big companies are better suited for owners who are happy with limited owner's use and who, basically, want a completely headache free, not-too-emotional kind of ownership.  The smaller companies are much better suited for owners who want to own a particular type of boat, (TMM for example, will take almost any boat you'd like in their fleet) with customized features, like to sail a lot, maybe go out on their boat 2 months at a time, and like to be very involved with their boat.

So as you can see, your choice here can drive you in 2 completely different universes. You will have to very carefully assess which one is best for your needs.

The Boat Type :  Obviously, your choice of boat will stem from your budget. And although you might find some price differences between companies for similar boats -mainly because of equipment differences- eventually, you will get the same bottom line, as in "You get what you pay for". The main question is: Monohull (more affordable) or Catamaran. But that is another discussion: just know that the massive, long term trend is driven by catamarans, especially in the Caribbean.  Once your budget is defined, several criteria should guide your choice.

-  Will you sail mostly with your wife/husband/significant other only? or.... - Will you often take the kids or friends along? If so, you will need more staterooms/heads. Would you consider the roominess and stability of a catamaran — great for young kids? Or are you a hard-core monohull sailor?  - Assuming you will keep the boat after the end of the contract, will she suit your goals back home? Same question if you intend to go cruising for an extended period of time at the end of the contract.

Very important : All things being equal, all boats do not bring in the same charter income. Some boat sizes/configurations are more popular than others among charterers. Therefore, if you choose a contract with a percentage-based income (see contract section), you'll want to know exactly what kind of income boats similar to yours have generated over the last, say, 2/3 years. For that, during the course of your contract negotiation, you have to ask the management company to show you the listings of real bookings achieved by boats similar to yours, at the base you will choose (see below.) Most companies will show you "proformas" of future potential bookings. Not good enough. Proformas can be deceiving, vague and optimistic. Insist for the real stuff. If the company has nothing to hide, they should have no problem disclosing this information to you.

The Boat Location

This is a matter of personal preference, but here are some criteria.  If you plan to base your boat in the Caribbean, bear in mind that the South Caribbean, also called the Windward, (Grenada, St. Lucia, Martinique) present more sailing challenges, with a lot of open ocean sailing, longer legs, and generally stronger winds than in the Northern Caribbean, also called the Leeward, (US and British Virgin Islands, St. Martin). So your sailing self-confidence and your anchoring technique will have to be up to par in the Windward.

Conversely, the northern part (US and British Virgin) offers an almost unlimited diversity of sailing grounds and anchorages in a relatively small area. Personally, this area has been my long-time favorite.

In the Bahamas and the Florida Keys, waters are much shallower, so catamarans are more adapted to the grounds and will let you go places that monohulls cannot access. In case you choose a variable income program, the Bahamas are (as of this writing) a very popular charter area bringing good income to a boat, especially a catamaran.

Very important : For similar boats, all bases do not bring in the same charter income. Some are more popular than others among charterers. Therefore, if you choose a contract with a percentage-based income (see contract section), you will want to know, again, what kind of bookings boats similar to yours have gotten over the last 2 years (see above, section 2.2.) Thus, if for geographical preference, you elect to base your vessel in a somewhat remote area, we strongly suggest that you go for a contract with guaranteed income. Some remote locations, with the advantage of being very exotic, might also have the problem of lacking competent mechanics and surveyors. Even parts could be hard to come by.

Finally, check how practical and pricey is the airline access from your hometown to the base you'd like.

Well, you have done your homework, made your choices, and you feel comfortable. You are armed to the teeth and ready to go to the next step: Contact several charter companies and start getting a feel for the real thing. But as we hope you understand by now, this is not a simple process, and we urge you to carefully tale all the steps above!

Charter yacht ownership review: the owner experience

If you’re the sole owner of a large luxury yacht , running and maintaining it can be a costly and labour-intensive venture. But by offering a yacht for charter, the yacht owner can ease the financial burden and safeguard the condition, value and effectiveness of a yacht, while also retaining a great many of the pleasures that compelled the purchase in the first place. In 2021, we spoke to the former Head Of Charter at Princess Yacht Charter, Rita, for the inside story on what offering your yacht for luxury charter is really all about…

Does your yacht qualify for luxury yacht charter?

According to Rita, there are several yacht features that lend themselves to luxury charter . In addition to a blend of private and open areas that enable guests to be flexible in their choice of eating, lounging and entertaining, the tenders and toys need to be well chosen and properly tailored to the yacht’s cruising region. An even spread of cabin sizes is also very useful, as it enables large groups to feel that everyone has an equally exclusive slice of the yacht charter experience. But with such fierce global appetite for luxury yacht charter, Rita is very clear the charter industry is now more accessible to luxury yacht owners than it’s ever been before:

“If you have a well-maintained yacht of 20m or more, hire a great crew. Of course, the location, age and fit-out of your yacht will always have a bearing on bookings and profitability, but as a trusted charter company , we ’ re perfectly placed to advise on where and how your money should be invested for the greatest financial return.”

As regards the décor of the yacht, Rita is equally clear about what most charter guests want to see: “A successful charter yacht needs to feel relatively neutral – almost like a blank canvas on which the charter guest is free to paint their own experience. What do you have to do to make your yacht ready?

While the RCD pleasure craft threshold of 24m means that large yachts and superyachts (of 100 feet and more) are routinely required to operate in accordance with commercial codes (rather than owner-driver recreational rules), all charter yachts need to acquire commercial status and be operated as formal business concerns. In addition to flag registration and compliance with the various codes of the jurisdiction of your charter operations, a classification society needs to be appointed to oversee the yacht’s surveys and certification. For chartering within the EU, the yacht owning company also has to be registered for VAT, with a fiscal agent in the country of charter to make any payments. And whether you have an existing crew on board or not, your treatment of them needs to comply with the requirements of the Maritime Labour Convention for the proper treatment of professional seafarers. Issues like contracts, wages, sick pay and working conditions all need to be considered, and additional training might also be required, alongside specific endorsements from the flag state, as well as upgraded insurance policies.

However, Rita is adamant that there is no reason why a charter yacht owner should feel in any way burdened by such concerns. On the contrary, with a proven charter company and in affiliation with the management company  to take care of these issues on your behalf, the key difference for the owner is not then one of logistics but of mindset. After all, the fact that your yacht has to become a formal business asset means that if you want to use it, you need to book a slot and buy a week aboard your yacht, precisely like any other charter guest. And as Rita points out, the personal impact of that is actually much more positive for the charter owner than most people imagine: “ Counter-intuitive though it might seem, a lot of charter owners actually find themselves enjoying their yachts much more than they would do if they were reserved for private use. By taking a lot of the expense and stress out of large yacht ownership, we often find that charter yacht owners use their yachts more frequently – and with significantly more satisfaction – than ever before.”

Experience with Dream Yacht Charter (owner & guest)?

I am considering a charter management program to finance a boat. Does anyone have experience with Dream Yacht Charter? Two options seem to be interesting for me: Dream easy: 35% upfront + 25% balloon payment -> here the question is if I get at least a partial owner's title on the boat? (for the case of insolvency) Partnership: 55% upfront -> I suppose this one comes with a 1/1 title. I know this is not the king of investments but 40% value loss over 5 years seems realistic, probably this is the cheapest way to manage ~4weeks/year sailing time.  

Hello, What are your goals for the boat - charter then sell or take over after? I just returned from a charter with DYC - people were great. Boat was a 2014 - in terrible shape. Mechanically sound and rigging was good but surface wise she was beat up and not taken care of. I have made a formal 'complaint ' with DYC and still waiting for their reply.

I was in the BVIs (3 weeks ago) and I was not the boat owner. A refit for her, based on my standards would be a complete interior renovation of cupboards/appliances/flooring/blinds, wiring and control assessment and replacement, deck refurbishing. Hull was scratched up but acceptable. Nav electronics were useless - kept shutting down. The lines were all different sizes/ material and conditon. I was told to run the generator 6-8 hours a day to keep everything charged and run the A/C - if this was done for the past 3 yrs. then those hours really build up on the 'mechanical' side. So cost could be expensive of for the latter component rebuild or replacement. Charter Company standards for such upkeep will vary I am certain. I have dealt with Horizon Yacht Charters as well and find them good. I am certain that there are others, but I would visit some boat shows and search the net for previous owner assessments of the companies before stepping in. Hope this helps.  

Thanks! Owner assessments - especially helping negative feedback is extremely rare to find. Actually for DYC I found some positive feedback so far. I do not mind e.g. if the sails are worn off after 5 years or the engine needs a standard overhaul do to its hours. But groundings (remember Cheeky Rafiki!), hull/helm/rudder damage of any kind, dead electronics is unacceptable. I'd say I'd accept a "complete blue-water refit" budget of <10% of the boat price (that's pretty much done if you replace the sails, batteries & service the engine). As for Horizon: they offer Bavarias for monohull, no thanks...

just heard about a bigger Bavaria that was bought from charter company. owner had the yard do a complete refit and the generator had to be removed for overhaul. the only way out was through the side of the hull. built like a Motorhome.

I just finished up a charter with DYC - with the caveat that I have only done one charter with them, I would will probably never charter with them again, and would never put a boat into charter with them. We were on a 2015 Bali 4.3 - I was interested in it as a possible BVI charter. The boat was only two years old, but was not in great shape - all the cabinetry hardware was ready to be replaced - hinges completely rusted, faucets badly corroded. We also had a problem with cockroaches on the charter which resulted in them fogging the boat after we returned it. Our electronics had nothing but problems - wifi was almost worthless since we were unable to connect to it much of the time. The main chartplotter at the helm froze on a regular basis and had to be rebooted on a regular basis. The sails looked pretty knackered as well, but I don't have a frame of reference if that would be considered typical. The bottom of the boat was in bad need of cleaning - lots of green slime growing on the bottom. One of our heads blocked completely on the trip necessitating two trips out by the repair team and a complete tear down to fix. Fortunately the head belonged to the skipper that was on board, so we weren't the cause of it. The skipper that was on board was great but did make the comment that after about 2 years in charter the boats are about done - can't imagine what they look like after 5 years. I sent an email outlining my experience to DYC - have to yet to hear back. There are better charter companies out there then DYC - we are on our second charter with BVI Yacht Charters in a 2016 Helia and the difference is night and day - of course it is a newer boat, and is better designed boat, but I'm sure glad that we got the better yacht as our second charter rather than the first!  

Be wary of the tax advantages associated with charter ownership. Most models I've seen show depreciation deductions, which are perfectly legal, but are also critical to make the numbers work. Since the boat will actually depreciate, that portion that represents actual reduction in value is truly a tax advantage. However, tax laws let you keep going, until your tax basis is zero. This means that when you ultimately sell the boat, you will pay taxes on whatever you sell her for. On the maintenance side, you want the best show available. Getting a hunk of junk back at the end just has to be a nightmare. It will, however, have accelerated rental wear and tear. It will never look like it was owner sailed.

Is Charter Ownership for Me?

Ask any seasoned sailor, and they’ll likely tell you their favorite memories are tied to their boat. But boats are also a lot of work, and no one ever has called a private yacht cost-effective. For this reason, many owners choose to put their boat to work by placing it in a charter management program. 

“There’s a huge economical advantage. But there’s a cost as well; a lot of people will be on the boat,” says Bruno Lemieux, who works in yacht sales, operation and development for Dream Yacht Sales.

Boats can be in Dream Yacht’s charter programs for up to 5 1/2 years, and the No. 1 question prospective owners have is: 

What will my boat look like in five years? 

A charter boat works hard, up to 33 weeks a year, in order to pay for all its expenses plus generate revenue for its owner. 

“Yes, it will get some wear and tear for sure” says Yanik Aubé, Dream Yacht’s America and North Caribbean sales director. “But any boat just sitting at the dock gets damaged—by neglect, salt air, or even by just rubbing on the dock… In this case, damages will be fixed by the base, and you don’t have to worry about it. You have a team that’s going to do it. And instead of paying $90,000 to $100,000 a year for insurance, dockage and maintenance, those are paid for you. Plus, you receive 8 percent of your boat purchase price per year in revenue in some of our programs.”

When the yacht nears the end of its service, Dream Yacht does a phaseout to return it to the owner in good condition.

“About 30 days before the end of the contract, we start building a list of things that need to be repaired. The contract is clear that everything needs to be working. All the equipment on board that was there at the beginning will be there and working, and all the original inventory will be matched. The gelcoat will be done; the bottom paint, if not done within the last 12 months, will be done; sails will be refurbished,” says Lemieux, who was in the owner-care department before sales.

He explains that the contract covers all this and is quite straightforward. What is not covered is normal wear and tear for cosmetic items such as cushions. If any cushions are missing or torn, they will all be replaced per the matching inventory stipulation, but if they are simply worn, they will not be. 

“I’ve been through about 25 phaseouts in the last year, and I have to say, Dream Yacht is doing a very fair phaseout. When the boat stops, they really spend the money and time to make sure the owners are leaving with a well-maintained boat,” Lemieux says. 

So, is it worth it?

The yearly return of 8 percent of the purchase price that Aubé quoted is Dream Yacht Sales’ guaranteed income program, called Dream Guarantee. It more than covers the depreciation of the boat. After 5 1/2 years in charter, about 45 percent of the purchase price has been paid back to the owner. Dream Yacht also offers a shared-revenue plan called Dream Performance, where charter income is split, 35 percent to the company and 65 percent to the owner. But the owner also pays for all expenses, the big three being dockage, insurance and maintenance. In real numbers, historical data has shown that after commissions and expenses are paid, if a boat is chartered at least 22 weeks a year in the Performance program, the owner receives an average of 30 percent of all gross charter revenue. “So, if your boat generates $180,000 in revenue, you can expect to get around $54,000 in your pocket at the end,” says Aubé. With some of the management programs offered by Dream Yacht Charter (Performance or Performance Plus) you can factor in the potential tax advantages of buying a yacht as an investment, which can be up to 35 percent of the purchase price, depending on the purchaser’s tax bracket, making the figures even more compelling. “In many situations, up to 90 percent of your boat gets paid (after charter service), and it’s still worth a lot more than that,” says Aubé.

How will my boat be maintained?

In the Dream Guarantee program, the company is responsible for and pays for everything. “If an engine blows, we will not call the owner; we’ll just replace the engine,” says Lemieux. After all, it’s in Dream Yacht’s best interest to keep the boat in good working order. In addition, a yearly maintenance period, including haulout, is built into the schedule. 

The company also handles all repairs and maintenance items for Performance program yachts, but it will consult with the owners first because, of course, the owners are paying the bills. 

In the works is a new platform that tracks maintenance, hours and parts for owners in both programs. “Owners will have access to this app in real time and know exactly what’s being done every day. It’s currently being tested in the Med in France and will be launched in America at the end of the year,” says Aubé.

Can I choose where it is based?

Yes—for owners of Performance yachts. “They can decide, ‘I want my boat in Annapolis during the summer, and I want it in BVI in winter.’ No problem. You’re covering the cost, you get the revenue, so you make the decision,” says Aubé. 

In the Guarantee program, the boat is promised a region rather than a specific base. “If you say, ‘I would like my boat in the BVI,’ we will put it there and try to keep it located there, but it might have to be moved to another base if demand fluctuates,” Aubé says. In this scenario, the yacht would stay in the northern Caribbean region of the USVI, BVI and Bahamas. “We are the one who decides if it needs to be moved, but we will always work towards having the boat where the owner wants it to be at first.”

When can I use my boat?

In the Dream Guarantee program, an owner can sail up to 12 weeks a year, paying only a nominal cleaning/turnaround fee. Moreover, they can use these weeks on their own boat or on any similar model in Dream Yacht Charter’s 45-plus locations around the world. 

It’s phrased “up to” 12 weeks because it’s seasonally dependent. Owners can book in advance either two weeks in high season and two weeks in low season, or six weeks in low season, plus they can book six weeks in high or low season last minute, meaning 10 days out.

In the Dream Performance program, owners can do what they’d like on their own boat. “There’s basically no limit of usage. So, if the owner wants Christmas, that’s fine,” says Lemieux.

A charter management program isn’t for everyone. An owner who doesn’t want to share their boat, expects it to be exactly as they left it each time they return, or enjoys tinkering on it every weekend is not a good fit for charter. But for those who are easing into boat ownership—perhaps slowing down on work commitments before the quintessential “sailing off into the sunset”—charter service can be a smart path. Not only does it make sense economically, but it also gives owners time to get to know their boat and gain sailing experience with the safety net of having a professional team looking after their boat.

Ownership in a charter management program can provide solutions to the financial and practical disadvantages of traditional private ownership. It really is an easy option provided you go into it with the right expectations and goals.

  • If you are looking to retire in the next 3-5 years and want to go cruising, the Guaranteed Income program may be a good option for you.  This program allows you to partially pay off the boat (around 45%) while you get ready to move on board. 
  • Alternately, you may have friends who love sailing as much as you do. You could put together a partnership with several other families. That way this investment becomes an even more desirable endeavor and you can use all 12 owner weeks, rather than only 3-6 weeks as a single owner. At the end of the program, the partnership company sells the boat and you could invest in a new boat in a program or move on and outright sell the boat. So, you will have paid around 45% of the cost of the boat from the guaranteed monthly payment for 60 months, recoup around 65% of the original value when you sell and you will have had 12 weeks / year for 5 years of free sailing time.

What is the Guaranteed Income Program?

The bigger charter companies like Dream Yacht Charter or Moorings offer:

  • 9% guaranteed income over 60 months on the value of the yacht.
  • You also get up to 12 weeks of owner time at any of their bases in the world, although most owners can use on average only about 5 weeks per year. If you have a partnership arrangement, the 12 weeks are very attractive
  • There are no costs to the owner for the duration of the program. So, insurance, dockage and maintenance is paid by the charter company
  • The yacht will be maintained for the duration of the program and then be phased-out at the end of the 60 month period. The owner receives a full schedule of the phase-out program and should receive a boat back at the end of the program that is in good condition, with all systems working, excepting for fair wear and tear.

  • Equity in your boat: $51,937
  • Value of 6 owner weeks @ $4500 average: $135,000
  • Value after 5 years based on statistics of SOLD boats over five years: $266,948
  • Mortgage Payoff: $215,011
  • Monthly Mortgage Payment: $3,160
  • Monthly Guaranteed Payment: $3,337
  • 20% Down Payment: $88,983
  • Lagoon 400 Net Price: $444,914
  • You will receive back 45% of the cost of the Yacht in guaranteed income and pay no insurance , no dockage, and no maintenance. All you have to pay is your mortgage, which the guaranteed income payment will cover.
  • The yacht, provided you bought a desirable yacht and layout, will be worth up to 65% of the original price. Catamarans are more desirable than monohulls.
  • The owner weeks have a value and should be calculated in this equation. Your weeks are worth on average $4,500/week. That will be $27,000 / year of free vacation on the above mentioned catamaran model. You can also “upgrade” on your owner weeks. The bigger companies will allow you to pay a small upcharge to charter a bigger yacht anywhere in their fleet with some exceptions.
  • Maintenance becomes a non-issue. A friend once remarked that he spent a week just working on his boat he owns and keeps in a marina close to his house. He had planned one day to go for a quick sail, but instead, had to do unexpected maintenance. He never had the time to go sailing! The following week he flew to the BVI  and used his owner exchange time with the Moorings. He walked aboard the boat and that night he was anchored out, enjoying the islands, with no time needed for maintenance and no unexpected headaches. He says: “It may be hard to put a dollar value on that, but that worry-free convenience has a great value for me.”

Looking at the numbers on the spreadsheet, it shows that after five years you will walk away almost even or slightly ahead. Your sailing for the 60 month period is free because it is owner time which you do not pay for but has an intrinsic value.

End Of Program Options

You may want to keep your yacht for personal use or live-aboard, most charter companies offer alternative options. Smaller companies like TMM or BVI Yacht Charters do not limit your time in the fleet, provided the boat is in good shape. However,  you have to assess the increased cost of maintenance and the lower revenues that the aging yacht will fetch. Bigger companies limit the age of yachts to 5 year or max 6 years as they bill themselves as “first tier” companies and charge accordingly. Some of them do have second-tier fleets where you can extend your management program. Alternately, some companies offer trade-in options if you want to continue in the program and buy a new yacht. They will also help you sell your pre-owned charter yacht for a 10% brokerage commission.

Dream Yacht in Grenada

We were aware that we were renting an older - 7 yr old boat that had been all over the place. In the Charter world the 3 year old boats are hard used. We did an older bareboat primarily for the lower price and knew there would be some issues but they usually don’t cause much trouble for a seasoned crew. The boat had a great refrigeration system, lots of cookware, good charts, nice windlass, and staff provided us with new cockpit chair cushioning and French press as we are Americans who like that sort of thing. It was a typical used boat with stuff that is used. Staff was very responsive to problems with mooring balls (not DYC’s fault) and difficulty with dinghy engine starts (we just had to acclimate to a coy Mercury). We like the people, and the boat was as is to be expected. We spent around 5 grand a week for a full 3 staterooms. We were happy. We enjoyed the captain’s meeting and received many good suggestions on where to go. Remember always swim your mooring ball - we were adrift and on the rocks due to a defective mooring ball. DYC is where you want to go if you are seasoned and want to spend most of your time in the water or at the beach.

An absolute nightmare

An absolute nightmare! I regret to say that my experience with Dream Yacht Charters BVI was utterly disappointing, warranting a one-star rating. The boat we rented was in deplorable condition, plagued by a plethora of issues. From cockroaches scurrying about to incessant leakage, malfunctioning batteries, broken drawers and cabinets, and a malfunctioning anchor, it was a nightmare from the start. Moreover, the absence of electricity, because of a malfunctioning battery pack/alternater, resulted in no power for essential appliances like the fridge, navigation instruments, anchor and lights which only exacerbated the situation. The poorly insulated engine turned the interior into an unbearable sauna, making our journey intolerable. Adding insult to injury, the caleche was leaking, further dampening our spirits. Despite these glaring problems, the office's response was appalling. They attempted to shift blame onto us and offered minimal assistance, if any. The litany of issues disrupted our planned route, forcing frequent stops for shore power every 2-3 days, driving up expenses due to exorbitant harbor prices. Additionally, the malfunctioning anchor necessitated costly moorings, further inflating our financial burden. In summary, our experience with Dream Yacht Charters was marred by incompetence, neglect, and a complete lack of accountability.

DYC makes it really easy to charter

DYC makes it really easy to charter a bareboat sailing vacation. Having done a dozen trips with the competition in BVI, Bahamas, Greece, Italy, etc I feel more confident in Dream's ability to get you on a high quality boat on time and in good condition. When they missed the boat (pun intended) in one situation, they were also gracious about admitting fault and offering a credit to future trips. I especially want to call out Savannah Collins on the American sales team who was a joy to work with over the phone. Thanks for everything Savannah!

Unsafe yacht

I chartered a 52 ft yacht in Antigua and it was unfit for purpose and potentially dangerous. There was an extensive list of faults which ruined our holiday, including a windlass that did not operate, an anchor that did not swivel, reefing lines jammed in the boom and hazardous swim ladder. The yacht also lacked basic appliances, had a hole in the kettle and missing fire extinguishers. This is an accident waiting to happen. I could go on… Dream yachts refused to even acknowledge my emails and sent no apologies. Avoid them at all cost.

Don't let your dream vacation turn into a nautical nightmare like ours!

Dear sailors and travelers, I am writing to you with a heavy heart and the need to warn you about my disastrous experience with Dream Yacht Charter (DYC). Recently, I entrusted this company for a dream trip through the Caribbean, only to find myself plunged into a nautical nightmare that dashed our carefully planned vacation and endangered our lives. From the outset, DYC's service left much to be desired. While the first few days of our journey went smoothly, everything unraveled when we experienced serious mechanical issues with the vessel. Two engines failed mysteriously, leaving us stranded in the middle of the ocean with no propulsion. Imagine the anguish and fear of being stuck at sea with families and children on board! But the worst was not just the mechanical failure, but DYC's incompetence and lack of accountability in addressing the situation properly. They ignored our distress calls, left us adrift for hours, and only after the situation became critical did they decide to take action. And I can't even begin to describe the additional problems we faced when we were finally "rescued"! DYC's response to this disaster? A refusal to acknowledge their responsibility and an offer of insultingly insignificant compensation. Not only did they refuse to reopen our claim, but they also attempted to discredit our version of events, implying that we were never offered the additional sailing days we claimed. Dear sailors, if you value your safety and your vacation, I urge you to steer clear of DYC like the plague. This company not only lacks integrity and professionalism, but also jeopardizes the lives of its customers with its negligence and lack of care. Don't let your dream vacation turn into a nautical nightmare like ours!

Poorly maintained boats

For reference, I've chartered in the BVIs about 12 times over almost 45 years, as well as Greece, Turkey, Australia, New Zealand, and elsewhere. We chartered in late Jan (2024) from Dream Yacht Charters out of Hodges Creek Marina near Fat Hog Bay on Tortola. On the one hand, sailing in the BVIs is always wonderful, so I'm not doing a hand-wringing "our trip was ruined" post. On the other hand ... The older boats at Dream Yachts are very poorly maintained. We faced myriad problems, including an ancient repeatedly patched bimini and dodger that ripped on the first windy day, and a hole in the galley floor caused by one of the checkout crew, that was never fixed. Multiple systems were leaking into the bilge or broken, including the A/C pump (leaking at the thru-hull!) and the galley seawater pump. The fresh water system broke halfway into the trip. Most alarming was the failure of one of the head macerator pumps -- they checked to see if "we'd clogged it". The "technician" disappeared into the head with a wad of paper in his hand, closed the door behind him so I couldn't see, and then announced that the pump output pipe (that I had previously checked) was clogged! A complete scam/ripoff. The sails on our boat were old and patched, the V-berth mattress and all the cushions mold- and mildew-stained, and everything generally tired. The galley was awful, with two wine glasses (for max pax of 8) and zero tumblers. We had to ask for a pot big enough to cook pasta, and for a colander. The shore power at the marina didn't work (we didn't stay at marinas elsewhere) -- which threatened to spoil our newly-purchased provisions. Of folks we met from other boats, one had a problem with their winch, and I heard of many other problems. Bottom line -- they don't maintain their boats. I'll never charter from Dream Yacht again (at least in the BVIs).

Dream Yacht Charter Raiatea Bora Bora

We had a blast on a 5-days trip around Raiatea, Taha’a & Bora Bora. Conditions were exceptional so was the crew. We had a beautiful and confortable catamaran for the 7 of us with plenty of space. The crew was super friendly and knowledgeable bringing us to beautiful snorkelling and cultural places around the different islands. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience!

Fantastic experience all round

Fantastic experience once again delivered by Dream Yacht Charters in the UK. Transparent pricing from the start and excellent value. Could not believe that the insurance indemnity was included in the price! Lorraine could not have worked harder to guide us on location and yachts to suit our needs. Any questions were dealt with quickly and professionally. The yacht we chartered met with our expectations and I have no doubt that had we experienced any difficulties at the base, Lorraine would have done her utmost to sort. First experience with DYW and first…

First experience with DYW and first time with DY Croatia. Preparation and briefing with the service team in US was so thorough that when I got to Dubrovnik ACI Marina everything run smoothly. No hidden costs, everything very transparent. We took a skipper who happened to be top notch, a local celebrity. Trip was excellent in all respects but we had little wind and we had to motor most of the time: next time I will make sure we reserve minimum guaranteed winds of 15 knots LOL

Dream Yacht Charter is HIGH Risk - Avoid!

If I can prevent just one more bad, unsafe DYC boat experience, maybe yours, then writing this review was worth it. We have discovered Dream Yacht Charter has earned a highly questionable reputation for providing poorly maintained boats for charter and based on our recent experience it is well earned. See the fast-growing 2,400 Member Facebook page: groups/dreamyachtchartersuck and TripAdvisor.com's almost 50% 1-star DYC reviews. Most of those with posted DYC issues have received no recourse, may have faced serious safety situations due to poor boat maintenance and/or support, may have sued, but like us, are seeking to prevent others from experiencing DYC’s lack of concern for charterer safety, maintenance incompetence, and blatant contract breaches. Charter DYC at your own risk. If interested, here’s our DYC experience. We chartered a boat for 8 days out of Nassau with indicators of issues to come on day 1 - the generator not working (yes, it worked at the dock and we did as thorough a boat check as allowed). The following 3 days turned into hell due to a dysfunctional boat promised in their contract to be in "good working order.” DYC breached our contract in 3 important ways. By day 3, the boat’s batteries were completely depleted. We had lost 2 nights sleep due to alarms going off throughout the night and a generator out of oil as we hung on an anchor in 35 knot winds completely without power for engines, navigation systems, lighting, windlass, or icebox cooling, etc. The batteries were truly dead, and would not hold a charge for more than 1 hour. DYC later denied this important fact – they missed the source maintenance problem. In the end, we had to count on our own backup phone batteries to have any communication at all. By this time, we were labeled a “distressed vessel” by the National Park Ranger who checked on us repeatedly until DYC eventually showed up. This, a second contract breach when a support vessel was not sent out as promised within 4 hours, let alone the next several days. Of note, 4 other DYC boats within a 5 mile radius also had crippling issues, including a broken halyard, a damaged transmission, broken generator, and disabled engine. After 3 days on anchor, DYC’s repair crew arrived and jerry-rigged the generator (their words), never fixing the batteries, and we were evacuated from the boat. A 3rd contract breach, no other boat or lost charter time reimbursement was then provided to us per our contract (and their own marketing materials and salespeople). During one long night while waiting for assistance, we discovered that the chartplotter listed all the same engine and battery alarms we were experiencing during the charter before ours – evidence of questionable maintenance and safety. Despite the evidence, and after multiple requests, no refund or credit was offered, and only a denial of our experience was received by DYC. While some of you may have had a more positive DYC experience, should you charter from DYC in the future you do so at your own risk and may also be left in a dangerous situation with wholly inadequate charter support and a company that does not appear to value customer safety, its own contracts, or satisfaction. Based on our research and the Facebook page, it appears DYC’s poor maintenance is experienced in nearly every charter location worldwide, and its corporate integrity a systemic safety issue. We encourage you to read the reviews before signing up, and taking them seriously - their contract is worthless to you. Bad charter boats do happen, but it appears DYC's are the worst, obfuscated by great marketing. We encourage you to stay safe and to look into other charter company alternatives.

Unfortunately disappointing (Abacos)

Unfortunately our 3rd tour with DYC was disappointing. The captain was disinterested, rude and barely present. The Abacos are still worth seeing - with a different crew. Despite our feedback, Dream Yacht Charter didn't get in touch. Bad customer service for us. We sailed the last time. Well, we hardly sailed.

No Dream in Dream yacht Charter

This was my worst vacation. We bare boated and the boat broke down, for 5 days we were stuck in a marina, while the boat was repaired and DYC has refused to do anything. these additional costs, we didn't plan for, and we lost a huge part of our vacation. before you book with them, try getting a hold of the base in the Bahamas, or a supervisor or someone who deals with complaints or refunds. Aside from sales/customer service (booking) you wont get past the iron curtain!

Dodging any issues.

We lost one day of our charter due to our freshwater being pumped into the starboard engine bilge whose bilge pump was not working and consequently filled up with water , at one point we thought we were sinking ! We returned to base as we had no water and no way of keeping it in the tanks even if we could have refilled. In another incedent in a torrential downpour a fixed cabin window leaked and destroyed my laptop. The reply from DYC main office was less than helpful. The laptop destruction was our fault as we put it in the wrong place and the lost day was ignored. Be very carefull when dealing with the main office they seem only to want to dodge any issues which involve any sort of refund.

Horrendous Experience - Took ALL our money and no holiday

Very bad experience chapter 2

After having the bad experience described in my post of 04/11/2022 (see below Title "Very bad experience") Dream Yacht Charter asked me filling the form bit.lydreamyacht I filled in the form on 20/11/2022 but I never got a reply... If no compensation is soon accepted, after discussion with a lawyer, I plan a legal action. The complaint will be located in France. I also propose sharing the practical information (submit of a complaint to the court, steps...) for French customers wishing running a legal complaint. Fantastic Charter - Great Trogir Base Manager and Staff

We chartered a 45ft catamaran. Boat was in excellent shape and we had no issues. Well equipped with chart book, extra propane and all other amenities. Base staff was super friendly and helpful and always asked us if everything was ok or if we needed anything when we passed them on dock. Base manager Tommi was super friendly and engaging, ensuring all of our needs were met and also took the time to suggest ports as well as booking slips for us. What a fabulous country and superb charter!

Great charter with Dream Yacht in St John

Had a great bareboat charter sailing around St John out of St Thomas with Dream Yacht Charter in a brand new Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40. Thanks to Dawn Fingers and the rest of the team for helping to accommodate our last minute booking. Highlights were Zozo’s at Caneel Bay and Cruz Bay. We’ve booked bareboat charter with Dream Yacht a number of times in the past and have they seem to be the best outfit in terms of boat maintenance and professionalism.

Love the staff and service

We most recently chartered our first Catamaran in Exumas Islands, Bahama and had a magnificent experience. That was our 4th charter with Dream Yacht Charter and are very happy with the overall service, boats and staff at the base. All the bases we have visited are very busy- but we always feel we get what we need and are attended to. Love that they have bases all around the world. It’s fair to say that Dream Yacht Charter cater for every single charter preference, budget and need. Different shipyards share the same concept: Volume & Comfort 

Build by two different shipyards, Lagoon with its home base by the Atlantic at the southwest coast of France, and Fountaine Pajot in Aigrefeuille in the middle of the countryside in the south of France, and with different naval architects and designers, both the Lagoon shipyard (Groupe Beneteau) and Fountaine Pajot (The Compagnie du Catamaran)  share the same market dominance on both the private -and yacht charter ownership market . Similarly, their design approach and model range is focused on comfort and utilising space and an abundance of lounging areas and space for entertainment. No wonder then that both are preferred catamarans for the charter market and have had an excess of 150 units sold of each model prior to their launch dates. 

Volume & Comfort – building from the inside-out

The slab-sided and modern design approaches to both these voluminous catamarans are clearly aimed towards creating an experience like that of a modern apartment and maximising the use of the yacht at anchor – a totally static experience. The concept of “building inside and out” is not strange to the powerboat industry and was made popular by the Polish shipyard Sunreef , which also introduced the Fly-bridge catamarans to the market that Lagoon Catamarans then later copied. Another popular shipyard in the same luxury segment is Privilege Catamarans,  where most designs and the appeal to its core customers are based on luxury feel of the yacht and the space and comfort at anchor. 

Is all this comfort then at the cost of a sailing experience? Yes, there is no denying that, albeit its large canvas size and push-button ease of all the sailing controls and lines make it an easy task to clock some serious miles without having to engage a professional crew. Both the Lagoon 51 and the Fountaine Pajot Aura 51 are arguably two of the largest sailing catamarans on the market for a short-handed crew.

The opinions are divided on the matter of what entails an ideal live-aboard multihull: the strength of the design, construction and feeling at helm of the performance-optimised catamarans such as the Outremere, Catana, Nautitech, ITACatamarans, Balance, or HH-Catamarans, or the luxury of the all-inclusive optimal holiday platform of the larger series production shipyards  such as the Lagoon, Fountaine Pajot, Leopard, or the Bali Catamarans.

We are not here to create division but rather to point out the why and how. For the yacht charter industry, the advantages are obvious and plenty. Most of the above-mentioned production series shipyards are closely tied or owned by the same group as the large global charter companies that offer yacht charter ownership programs and investments, such as the Dream Yacht Charter, Navigare Yachting, SunSail and Moorings. 

For the charter industry, the advantages of this configuration are multiple:

  • Beamy design: create plenty of main deck space and seating/lounging arrangements and allows for larger transoms and bathing platforms.
  • Volumuniuos hulls: increases the stowage -and payload capacity and width in the cabins.
  • Fly-Bridge: another vantage point and lounging area and a preferred helm position for a hired skipper. 
  • Layout and Size: optimal cabin configurations and spacious island bed cabins cater for plenty of guests and even crewed charter
  • Saloon Main Deck: focus on dining arrangements and entertainment with larger galley sizes. No need for a navigational station as most time is spent at anchor or navigating short distances and boat is often managed by a professional skipper.

Lagoon Catamarans

Fountaine Pajot Catamarans

Created in 1976 by Jean-François Fountaine, later in 1983, the brand’s first sail cruising catamaran, the Louisiane 37, became a commercial success.  Nowadays, the Fountaine Pajot name is associated with spacious, comfortable cruising catamarans, both for the private and charter ownership market. The Aura 51 was first introduced in late 2022 and replaced the nine-year-old Saba 50 design (which they produced more than 150 units) and is part of a new series of aesthetically enhanced Fountaine Pajot catamarans ranging from the Isla, Astrea, Elba and now also the new Aura 51.

The flybridge has been designed to utilize up to 80% of the rooftop, featuring two expansive sun pads located at the forefront of the helm station, accompanied by a spacious C-shaped seating area. The central table can be lowered to create an exceptionally roomy sunbathing area. Two stairs lead to the fly, one for the helmsman and one for the guests. This double access allows a great fluidity of connection between the living spaces of the boat. The flybridge of the Lagoon 51 is innovative by the modularity of its spaces, its clever ergonomics and the cosiness of this great living area. The modular seating provides an opportunity to safely navigate the vessel, alone or with company, without compromising on the comfort.

A MORE LIVELY SAILING EXPERIENCE

The platform for the Lagoon 51 is based on that of the former 50, although the mast position has been significantly shifted. 

The mast is stepped on the median beam, at 40 per cent of the overall length aft of the bow and the Lagoon 51 has a lighter construction, reduced by 1,000 kg or five per cent compared to the 50. This configuration means sufficient sail area can be achieved with a shorter mast, lowering the centre of effort and reducing weight aloft.

With the structure lightened by 750kg, a rig that’s more than 6ft feet shorter and an overlapping genoa, the Lagoon 51 is designed to be livelier on the water than her predecessor.

SUSTAINABLE COMMITMENTS

Lagoon is committed to minimizing its impact on the environment. Sustainable solutions and environmental care are an important part of the Lagoon strategy.

Lagoon 51 offers options of XXL solar panels on the roof. This technology provides more than 3.400 watts of power to operate the on-board service. The boat is therefore fully autonomous (except for the air conditioning). The solar panels fit perfectly into the lines of the catamaran and do not interfere with life on board. The flybridge and the sun pads on the roof are still accessible and usable even with the panels.

On board the Lagoon 51 model they are taking active measures to insure that :

  • hemp fiber replaces fibreglass wherever possible, together with partially bio-sourced resin
  • upholstery in the recycled fabric is proposed
  • 100% ecological and biodegradable cleaning products will be delivered with the boat
  • The proposed Alpiwood is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)and many more innovations are in progress.

The Aura 51 is an impressive vessel distinguished by its towering mast and generous measurements of 51 feet LOA and 26 feet 6 inches in beam. Its sleek, harmonious lines with reverse sheer to the deck and an athletic aft sweep of the slim coach roof are distinct features that are emblematic of the renowned Fountaine-Pajot brand. Credit goes to Berret-Racoupeau for providing long-term design input that has contributed to the vessel’s unmistakable appearance. The design updates implemented on the Aura 51 from the Saba 50 are introduced harmoniously. 

Grand Large Concept – Comfort & Volume

The Aura 51 replaces the Saba 50, boasting voluminous hulls and wider transom entrances. The newfangled coachroof design seamlessly integrates an extensive number of solar panels, granting copious amounts of natural illumination and a more spacious flybridge area. Subsequently, the primary bulkhead doors have the capacity to retract fully, facilitating a 3m wide opening between the saloon/galley and cockpit.

Liveability is the key to the rise and rise of the catamaran, and the Aura 51 puts natural light and its huge volume to good use. Astutely designed, the Aura 51 offers four accommodation layouts, with all cabins equipped with en suite facilities, including the six-cabin version.

Easy to manage shorthanded

Arguably the largest size catamaran without the need for a professional crew, the thought process bending the design of the Aura 51 is centred around the ease of movement onboard and at the helm. The boom is accessible for ease of access to the main sail and all control lines are drawn back to a central helm position. There is little need to engage guests aboard as your crew when navigating or docking.

Layout Options

The Aura 51 has several layout options that make it an ideal combination of a private owner’s yacht with an ambition to keep her in a charter management. The cabin options include a standard two sets of maestro cabins accessible with their own private entrance from the cockpit and a full owners Maestro with the four-cabin setup instead of the five or six-cabin setup.

The Aura 51 is the first step from Fountaine Pajot towards moving towards a greener way of construction and also ownership of a yacht.  The Aura 51 is a significant milestone for the company as it offers the yard’s first Smart Electric option. The company has collaborated with La Rochelle specialists, Alternatives Energies, to develop electric pods that consist of hydrogenerators and energy storage and management systems. The hybrid model has already been launched, and an electric and hydrogen variant is also in the works. It is commendable to witness a reputed production yard taking credible steps towards promoting cleaner boating. “The buzz around the reveal of Lagoon’s newest model never really excited us, as it was unclear what they hoped to accomplish with introducing a 51-footer between their rather new model, the 50, and their current Lagoon 52. Neither the PR nor the concept presentation was convincing enough for us to grasp what the design team at Lagoon was trying to achieve with small adjustments to what seemed like an upgraded 50. However, we may have been wrong…. When we finally got a tactile and spatial awareness of how the new features came together, it was clear that this was not just an updated version of an existing model, but rather a step towards a new set of standards that will set a precedent for the rest of the industry. The interior and exterior components, trademark Lagoon hull shape, and move towards a lighter structure with a forward mast and shorter rig and overlapping genoa make the Lagoon 51 even livelier on the water than her predecessor while introducing an emphasis on solar power that will characterise the brand’s future models. The Lagoon 51 is no longer just a catamaran but an entire experience afloat, staying true to its core concepts while introducing more nimble sailing, hightened level of luxury and detailing and practical use of space.”

The Flybridge – the centrepiece of the Lagoon 51

The Lagoon 51 has large deck space and several social areas to relax at anchor or when sailing. It is equipped with a flybridge that covers up to 80% of its roof and with modular seating which can be easily adjusted to accommodate any number of guests, making it an ideal place to relax alongside the captain. The yacht’s double access feature comprises two staircases, one for the helmsman and another for the guests, ensuring a seamless transition between living spaces onboard.

The flybridge is designed with ample headroom which guarantees guests’ safety, both at anchor and while underway. Manoeuvres are efficiently carried out from the steering station, while the guests can comfortably move around without interfering with the helmsman. All these features make the Lagoon 51’s flybridge a unique experience, and an ideal choice for anyone looking for comfort, convenience, and luxury at sea.

Exterior to Interior – plenty of social areas             

One of several key design features of the Lagoon 51 is the multiple outdoor areas perfect for entertaining and for changing the atmosphere or setting and why the Lagoon designs are so popular as a boat to spend extended time aboard.

The aft cockpit is commendable, offering ergonomic seating for up to eight people and a beautiful view of the ocean. The cockpit table is thoughtfully placed for easy access to the saloon, the starboard transom, and side decks, and it is equipped with two fold-out leaves for additional dining space. Along with a full-sized sink, drainer, refrigerator, and barbeque, this outdoor space is the ultimate entertaining area.

The Lagoon 51 comes with an optional large hydraulic lifting platform at the transom, which provides a spacious area for sunbathing, swimming, and storing a tender.

As you move along the side decks, you’ll find yourself standing at the forefront cockpit. This impressive area boasts an unobstructed view of the vast oceans and beautiful horizons. Regardless of whether you prefer resting under the sun or in the shade, the cockpit is abundant with amenities that promise optimal comfort aboard Lagoon 51.

This area boasts an inviting seating space complemented by a central coffee table and sun protection, enabling you to fully appreciate the picturesque views at your own pace. The smaller forward cockpit can accommodate up to 4-5 people with two sunbeds and a coffee table, offering a comfortable space to relax and take in the view.

The Lagoon’s design ensures that it’s not excessively weighed down forward, making it suitable for offshore and bluewater sailing without the risk of capsizing from waves.

Ease of movement and access

It’s clear that there has been plenty of attention paid to access and circulation when designing the Lagoon 51. This starts at the transoms, with easier access for stepping aboard due to their shape and positioning, which brings them closer to the dock. Their size is also more welcoming and there’s no need to jostle when getting off the dinghy – three people can stand together without getting in each other’s way. The extended transoms of the Lagoon 51 makes for effortless boarding. This feature brings safe and practical access to the dock side.

Between the transoms is an optional tenderlift or bathing platform. The tenderlift acts as a large balcony by the sea. At mooring, the platform transforms into a bathing platform.

Finding your way from transom to cockpit is easier than ever with improved access of a two-step staircase.  Only two steps up and the cockpit and the entire nacelle are immediately accessible because the sugarscoops are slightly higher off the water and the thickness between the underside of the bridgedeck and the cockpit sole has been reduced.

This benefits the cockpit, whose vast surface area is divided into three zones. An adjustable plancha grill is next to the aft bench seat, a lounger occupies the starboard side, and an L-shaped bench seat surrounds the table on the port side.

Part of the seat can be shifted forward to enlarge the table when at anchor, for instance, but this hinders direct access to the flybridge.

Summary of the key exterior highlights :

The Fountaine Pajot Aura 51 is in the category of optimal yachts for private- and charter management ownership. 

“The Fountaine Pajot was introduced to us in 2019 during the Boot Dusseldorf boat show for a select few charter companies associated to the shipyard. Back then the design ideas and concept was to improve on what had made the Saba 50 so popular, in both the private yacht ownership market and the now more important sphere of business for the shipyard – the yacht charter business. What positively suprised us back then was the clear strategy from the shipyard to incoorpate a conscious effort to introduce sustainability to the project. It’s early stages for all shipyards on this front and we can only accept that most of this is for marketing purposes only, but atleast we are seeing progress and effort. The Aura 51 had its real debute in 2023 at the International Multihull Show, where it was already communicated that the shipyard had sold an excess of 150 units to its dealer network and that lead times are now up to four years for anyone interested at the boat show to place an order for the next production slot. Clearly then, they yard must be doing something right or is it all marketing? We will leave that up for the professional yachting journailst to decide and for you as our audience to ponder, but several things are undeinably true as facts and also impresses us as yacht purchase advisors and yacht ownership specialist. The Aura 51 is an ideal bare-boat yacht for the charter market and the design appeals to many that are moving from power boating and/or from monohulls in search for space and comfort. The concept is not unique, but its trending and we can only agree that with all the modern comforts of a trendy luxury hotelroom or small apartment, the Aura 51 can also take you from A-to-B with ease even if you limited expereience sailing”.

Central Helm Position

Fountaine-Pajot vessels are outfitted with a conveniently placed bulkhead helm situated on the starboard side. This helm position allows for seamless maneuvering of the craft while offering a clear view of the canvas and thoroughfare forward due to its elevated position. The rudders of the 51 are supported with top-tier hydraulic control, negating the obligation for any physical connection to the helm. Such a feature, while not offering tactile feedback, does provide ample space forwards of the pedestal for line handling, streamlining vessel operation.

All control lines centrailised

All the active lines are gathered in two strips, which eventually converge to the three Lewmar Evo winches that are mounted on the coachroof. It should be noted that, should one desire, these winches can be electrically operated. As for the mainsheet, it is conveniently positioned athwartships, allowing for effortless handling of the line. Additionally, tidy bags for the ropes, falling deeply into the storage area, facilitate the ease of stowage. The only exception is the genoa halyard, which runs to the mast, and can only be regulated through a block and tackle system, implemented on a captive line.

Forward Mast

The Aura 51 has it’s steeped mast forward compared to its competitors the Lagoon and Bali Catamarans. This means that the mast is supported by a strong laminated bulkhead which is better for the integrity of the construction int eh long run, but also allows for a design feature where ease of access to the boom and sailing bag is priotised. The Aura 51’s stubby bowsprit is positioned at a slight angle skyward to facilitate the tacking of the gennaker or Code 0 sails. The running sheets extend aft and then double back up to additional winches on the periphery of the cockpit.

Loung and Dinning Areas

With a fly-bridge or in this case, a central elevated helm position on the Aura 51, this arrangement allows for ample exterior space is available for activities such as dining, relaxing, and water sports during anchorages.

Within the cockpit, there is a graceful teak table that comfortably seats eight individuals and can be effortlessly expanded to accommodate twelve individuals with a fold-out leaf and fill-in seat. The plancha grill located on the transom facilitates convenient food preparation. Notably, the cockpit features a raised sunbed and a sofa on the transom.

TheAura 51 is fitted with forward lounge seating that comes with an opening window from the saloon, as well as a vast 172-square-foot flybridge. The decks are flush, and an aft hydraulic platform is equipped to carry the tender while sailing and launch swimmers or divers at anchor. Particular attention has been given to ensure the platform closes smoothly to the transom skirt, providing easy access.

The Lagoon 51 is a step towards introducing new materials and design concepts that were introduced in the design process of the larger and more luxurious Lagoon 55.  The mast is stepped on the fore end of the salon ensuring an uninterrupted view. The generous luminosity, emanating from the 360° vertical windows, is complemented by the exquisite wood finishes, known as “ Alpi sand oak”. This spacious salon boasts impressive volume, providing effortless circulation. In addition to its aesthetic appeal, it is equipped with practical solutions characteristic of a Lagoon yacht.

Natural Light & Natural Ventilation

The Lagoon 51 offers huge internal accommodation with ample space when the weather dictates spending time indoors. With new design features on the coachroof to make it more sleek appeal from the outside, the interior design team also spent a lot of consideration to create that roomy and light interior feel and natural ventilation as part of the Lagoon concept moving towards more sustainable and green yachting. Hatches and forced air ventilation is found through all cabins and interior space, such as the large opening hatch by the mast foot. This will be an important source of natural ventilation at the anchor.

The saloon has a large saloon table for both dining and coffee table modes and space to seat 10, although eight would be more comfortable. This area is slightly raised, with windows at eye level, although the view is blocked on both aft quarters, which makes it less suited as a watch-keeping station in inclement weather. There’s also a nav station/desk area, with space to fit a multifunction display. Natural ventilation primarily comes from big opening ports in the front coachroof windows.

The galley forms an L-shape on both sides of the aft end of the saloon, with a sink, small dishwasher, and four-burner gas cooker to port. To starboard is an extensive fridge/freezer capacity totaling almost 400 liters.

Worktop space is impressive on both sides and fiddles are high enough to contain liquid spills and keep items in place in rough seas. Stowage is excellent, including eye-level lockers, drawers, and lockers below the countertop, plus large underfloor volumes. There’s also a dedicated space for a coffee machine, while a washer/dryer can be fitted in the starboard hull and an additional 100 liters freezer in the port hull.

Lagoon 51 layout options

The Lagoon 51 has several layout options suited for small families or larger groups making it an optimal hybrid between a traditional holiday-making yacht and a live-aboard vessel. All double cabin layout options have their own separate shower stalls. What is unique for the Lagoon compared to its competitors, are the additional midship cabins that as made possible by the voluminous hull shape and design of the Lagoon. This allows for sleeping guests and a crew up to 14 people.

The mid cabin is the smallest of cabins and has limited stowage, while the forward one has the best stowage, but shares the head and shower. An option with two cabins in the port hull is also offered. With this arrangement, the forward cabin doesn’t gain additional floor space but becomes fully en-suite and there’s even more stowage.

Furthermore, the owner’s hull is even more luxurious, with its vanity/dressing area fitted as standard. As for the port hull, it offers three berths in the standard version. The furniture and decor, signed by Italy’s Nauta Design, is as warm as ever, and the materials are plush.  The owner’s accommodation in the starboard hull is palatial, with huge hull windows that eliminate the semi-basement feel some older multihulls have. There are also massive stowage volumes in a range of formats, right down to the organisation of paperwork, plus a corner sofa and big dressing table/desk.

The huge bathroom forward has his and hers basins, a completely enclosed toilet and big shower.

Smart Systems & Connectivity 

The many onboard systems make this yacht as comfortable and easy to live on as any home on shore, although maintenance is obviously more complex and onerous.

The Lagoon 51 is offered with the Seanapps-application which is a smart box that simplifies your boat’s management and maintenance. Whether you want to check your fuel and battery charge levels, or schedule maintenance operations, Seanappshelps you streamline and safeguard your boat’s maintenance requirements simply and easily.

The watermaker produces 100lt per hour on 12V, so can be run from the solar panels, even though it draws 40A. It’s easily accessed, under the floor of the port aft cabin. Equally, the extensive fridge and freezer capacities will provide a huge length of self-sufficiency before needing to reprovision or refuel.

“…the highly experienced sailing couple who own the second Aura 51 to launch and the boat we trialled. Johan Salen, co-owner of The Ocean Race (formerly the Volvo Ocean Race), lives and works aboard full time with his wife, Christine, and their dog Leo. The Salen’s spent three years sailing their previous performance catamaran, an Outremer 5X, around the world with their son. But after seven years living ashore since then, they wanted a more comfortable boat, yet one still capable of averaging 8-10 knots. The Salen’s rarely go to marinas so maneuvering from the single helm hasn’t been an issue… The couple made another salient point: “When you spend a lot of time aboard, you are not sailing most of the time,” Johan explained. “Even with our Outremere 5X we were sailing less than 10% of the time.” The Swedish ex-professional windsurfer considers it more important now to have the space to ship the right equipment and watersports toys to enjoy at anchor… “It’s the toys you can bring to enjoy life that is one of the main benefits a catamaran brings,” says Johan”

Dining or Lounging

The cockpit area plays host to the main dining area, and the design by Berret Racoupeau has effectively enhanced the connectivity to the galley. The Aura 51’s voluminous interior is accentuated by the use of natural light, which is a notable feature. The saloon of the Aura 51 boasts an extensive area, complete with a generous island that serves as the social hub, akin to a modern home. The aft doors can be fully slid back, providing an expansive 10-foot opening with the island galley in the center. This arrangement is perfect for facilitating traffic flow between the galley and the saloon while having easy access to the work surfaces and waste bin from the cockpit. The coachroof windows and long, large skylights, together with the opening forward window, make it a naturally bright space with valuable ventilation.

This yacht has been designed with flexibility in mind. Deep, comfortable sofas are present in the saloon’s forward and starboard sides, making it an ideal area for watchkeeping, movie nights, or coffee with visitors. Additionally, if the outside temperature is too low, you can dine indoors since the yacht has a removable table. At the centerline, there is a chaise lounge, referred to as the “meridian” by Fountaine-Pajot; this is an excellent place to oversee instruments, steer the yacht remotely using a tablet, and monitor the sails through the skylight overhead.

Double Cabins Galore 

The Aura 51 provides an exceptional example of a catamaran that boasts a remarkable level of livability, an ever-growing trend on the rise. 

The cabin configuration can accommodate a range of guests, from four ensuites cabins to six, and the option of having two aft-most cabins with their companionways that emerge to the aft deck is ideal for charter guests or older children.

The owner’s hull boasts a significant amount of headroom and space, with a sculpted out bulkhead used to open up the cabin area. It offers ample liveaboard comfort, with a spacious changing area opposite the wardrobes, and direct aft deck access – the crowning feature. The desk amidships is an essential addition that Johan uses as his office constantly.

In the starboard hull, a bulkhead separates the aft cabin, meaning access is only feasible from the cockpit. Each of the three cabins in this hull feels large, with its own ensuite, even if the athwartship berth forward has a slightly more prestigious feel. The size of the separate heads area would be appreciated in most homes.

Every cabin has been carefully crafted to offer at least two sources of natural light and air ventilation openings. Finally, a heating and air conditioning package is optionally available for convenience regardless of the weather.
