The sailing area of the Baltic Sea is unique in its diversity. On the one hand culturally, around the more than 400.000 sqkm large inland sea several countries are close to each other, where you can start your trip with a yacht charter Baltic Sea, for example Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Poland and Estonia. On the German coast there are small and large marinas and cities within short distances. So there are many opportunities for interesting shore excursions. The different stretches of coast offer varied landscapes, from the flat Fjord coast to the Mecklenburg Bay with its many inlets and larger towns to the Bodden coast.dten to the Bodden coast, where several nature reserves are located, beautiful steeper coasts such as the cliffs on Rügen and the various historic Hanseatic cities.

The Baltic Sea is considered one of the best sailing areas with good wind conditions, but it is also a demanding one, for example due to the busy shipping traffic. But although the Baltic Sea is rather a sailing area for experienced sailors, there are always sections along the coast for less experienced and beginners - whether in the Schlei or the Bodden landscape, for example, you can also experience the diversity here. If you are just starting out in sailing or would like to expand your practice, you will also find many sailing schools along the German coast.

Along the German Baltic Sea coast

The Baltic Sea coast in Germany  spans over 2,000 km long. It commences in the west with the Fjord coast , which is a popular sailing area. THis section of the German Baltic Sea coast shares its border with the Danish Baltic Sea coast, making a two-country trip along the mainland coast of Denmark, or to the islands of Langeland and Als, an enticing prospect. The historic city of  Flensburg , conveniently located near the boarder, serves as the nearest starting point. Here, an inland cruise is also a viable option. The Schlei meanders inland to Schleswig and transports you back to Viking times with the renowed site of Haithabu. In the east, Heiligenhafen and Großenbrode offer a variety of yachts to sail to the Danish South Sea or on a short trip around the island of Fehmarn . The Fjord coast is an extremely varied sailing area where you will find beaches for swimming, towns for strolling and green landscapes for walks and hikes.

The Fjord Coast - two-country cruise, to the Vikings and on a city trip to Flensburg and Kiel

On the German Baltic Sea coast, for example, the Fjord Coast sailing area is popular. Here the German Baltic Sea coast borders on the Danish Baltic Sea coast, so that a two-country trip along the mainland coast of Denmark or to the islands Langeland and Als is a good idea. The nearest starting port to the border is the traditional city of Flensburg . A trip to an inland area is also possible here. The Schlei meanders inland to Schleswig and takes you back in time to the Vikings with the famous site of Haithabu. In the east, Heiligenhafen and Großenbrode offer a variety of yachts to sail to the Danish South Sea or on a short trip around the island of Fehmarn. The Fjord coast is an extremely varied sailing area where you will find beaches for swimming, towns for strolling and green landscapes for walks and hikes. Another interesting route for a yacht charter across the Baltic Sea is via the Danish islands of Langeland and Als to the Bay of Kiel, from where it continues along the coast to the island of Fehmarn.

Mecklenburg Bay - Wismar, Rostock and sandy beaches

yacht zentrum baltic bay

You can start from Burgtiefe or Großenbrode in the west of the bay and include the island of Fehmarn, or you can start in the Lübeck Bay from Neustadt . The base in the east is Warnemünde , from where you can start your cruise with stops at bathing beaches or visiting the city of Rostock. Across the Mecklenburg Bay, the Danish South Sea with Lolland and Falster is also not far away.

Along the Bodden coast to Hanseatic cities, to Rügen and Usedom

To the east again, from Stralsund to Szczecin, the Bodden coast follows. Here are nature reserves like the nature park Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft or the national park Jasmund with a special flora and fauna. The island of Rügen impresses with its white chalk coast, Darß and Fischland have always been popular for their beautiful sandy beaches and dune landscapes. Likewise the island of Usedom , which can be explored well by bike or on hikes. If you are interested in history or more of a city hopping, you will find this in the several Hanseatic cities that are located here, such as Stralsund , Greifswald and Szczecin. You can also charter a yacht just over the Polish border in Swinemünde and sail along the German coast from the east.

Sailing in the Danish South Sea: family vacation and island hopping

Popular areas in Denmark are the Little and Great Belt , through which you can make a round trip around the island of Funen, and the Danish South Sea south of Funen. Starting points are Kerteminde in the west of Funen, Dyvig on the island of Als and Juelsminde on the mainland north of Funen - the island world of Denmark is open to you from all three. You can also reach the Danish South Sea from Flensburg in Germany.

In the north of Funen you will find sandy beaches for swimming, the game reserve in the Odense Fjord invites you to observe animals and there are stops in many picturesque villages around the island. In the Great Belt you can also cross over to Zealand. Fyn also surrounds many smaller islands that you can explore. To the south lies the so-called Danish South Sea with about 50 islands in the shelter of Fyn. Especially families and less experienced sailors appreciate this relaxed part of the Baltic Sea.

Sweden - city trip and idyllic island life

yacht zentrum baltic bay

In the Gothenburg Archipelago sailing area, small fishing villages, colorful wooden houses and a picturesque natural landscape await you on your sailing trip. You can start in this area from Gothenburg or a little north from the smaller town of Marstrand .

The Stockholm archipelago , with its 24,000 islands, offers an extremely wide range of excursion destinations. Whether fish dishes or a glass of wine, local dishes can be enjoyed anywhere during a yacht charter in one of the bars and restaurants. The archipelago offers various opportunities for a swim stop. On the culinary side you will find a wide variety of seafood such as prawns with aioli dip, herring or oysters.

Plan your yacht charter in Baltic Sea together with us, either by mail or by phone. We will help you to find the right yacht for your needs and those of your crew or family. After booking you will receive charter folders and sailing proposals for your desired sailing area.

Off the beaten track: Finland and Estonia

If the Swedish archipelago is not enough for you, you will be spoilt for choice in Finland : The archipelago sea between the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia comprises more than 70,000 islands. It's quieter here in terms of tourism, but that doesn't mean it's any more boring. You can go hiking, cycling, try other water sports, visit museums and be inspired by the diverse cultural program of the Finns in the summer. From the base Taalintehdas you start right in the middle of it. In the inner archipelago you sail protected from stronger winds.

Estonia also offers an interesting sailing destination. The mixture of diverse history, which is still visible in many places, the spirit of optimism of the young and the peace and quiet before the streams of tourists promise a relaxing vacation full of discoveries. Especially the capital Tallinn offers a good start. For sailors, the Estonian coast offers a world of 2000 islands with beautiful nature, coziness and island traditions.

We wish you an exciting sailing trip!

Yacht Charter Baltic Sea - sailing in the Baltic Sea

Amber, boats, lagoon coasts, the bath of berlin, and an international sailor meeting point.

Yacht Charter Baltic Sea - Sailing in the Baltic Sea

Cardinal directions, ports, and open borders: great cruise destinations in the North and East

Sailing and water sports have continuously gained popularity in the Baltic Sea region over the last ten years. Today, skippers with boats of all kinds have a huge selection of marinas and ports both in the above-mentioned areas plus in and around Kappeln in the Angeln region, on the edge of the Schlei fjord and its largest city Schleswig, in and around Eckernförde, and at Weissenhäuser beach. There are more opportunities on the coast of the surfing paradise of Fehmarn Island, in Dahme, Grömitz at an Timmendorfer Beach, in the Baltic Sea bathing area Boltenhagen, on the island Poel in the Bay of Wismar, and in Dierhagen, Kühlungsborn and Nienhagen. All those water sport locations plus the many sailing and sport centers in the neighboring country Poland have made the Baltic an ever more popular vacation spot, not least because of the decent prices and modern facilities. Good infrastructure can be found, for example, in ?winouj?cie, Stepnica, Kamie? Pomorski, Dziwnów, and in Dar?owo, Ko?obrzeg (which literally translated means “by the shore”), Trzebie? and Wolin as well as on the inner waters near the cities and municipalities Miedwie, Drawsko, Lubie, Siecino, Pile, Wielimie, Bukowo and Resko. Those towns, too, continue to enjoy increased popularity among international tourists who come to relax by the water or who are searching for water sports to do.

The Baltic countries Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are also of course just a stone’s throw away, past Szczecin and Salzhaff, from the German border. The same applies to the island Bornholm and the entire region of Denmark’s “South Sea” islands, and you can reach the southwestern Swedish province of Skonen and the Schären archipelago further north. The island Aland is halfway between Stockholm (find route suggestion for Stockholm here) and Finland’s capital city, Helsinki, and can be reached by sailboat or motorboat . In turn, people who like boards and fast winds swear by the surfing areas between the port city Wismar and the Bay of Mecklenburg , as well as the coasts of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst and Ummanz peninsulas, the latter of which is Germany’s largest body of shallow water. In Dranske on the Wieker Lagoon is an annual competition called the German Windsurf Cup . It attracts hundreds of participants and thousands of guests. Other recommended surfing spots on the German Baltic coast are Lindhöft in the Bay of Eckenförd, near the vacation spot Orther Reede and the Westside of Orth on Fehmarn, Niendorf, the Borthener Ufer (shore) and Pelzerhaken in the Bay of Lübeck, Salzhaff and Pepelow in the Bay of Wismar, the places next to the Warnow estuary at the marina Hohe Düne (high dune) in Warnemünde, on the Saal Lagoon in Fischland-Darß-Zingst, near Wiek and Suhrendorf on Rügen, and in Karlshagen and Ückeritz on Usedom.

Pike, herring, cod, and salmon instead of coral fish, and wreck diving that is like time travel

The large and versatile types of fish in the Baltic Sea make it a wonderful place to go for a fishing trip of any kind. The fish are plentiful throughout the year but the kinds vary by season, meaning you can come several times a year to catch a nice selection of species. Whether from the beach or boat, from the pier or a bridge, many freshwater and saltwater fish such as eel, garfish, flounder, pikeperch, common roach, bream, and others, populate the waters and bite according to the season. You can go fishing on the coasts of the many lagoons in the area as well as in the many bays in Schleswig-Holstein. According to the need of the fishers, equipped boats and fishing cutters can be rented almost anywhere along the Baltic Sea coast for surprisingly low prices. For the classic cod fishing in the parts of the sea around Rügen, the time between the end of April to the end of May and from September to December are the best in which to go. In these months, the inshore waters of Aneglei also promise good results in shallower waters, whether you are going reel fishing or vertical fishing with rubber fish or natural bait. From the beginning of June to the beginning of September, it is also a worth it to go on a little excursion to the very cool approximately 2000 shipwrecks further out at sea around the coasts of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. As a bonus, there are also large numbers of cod, salmon and sea trout scurrying around underwater in these areas. The numerous wrecks from various past eras also of course draw in divers of all ages. In the area around the eastern coast of Rügen near Lohme and Sassnitz, the wrecks of the fishing cutter “Friedrich Engels”, the steel freighter “Amazone” and the Danish gaff schooner “Harald”. The wrecks lie between 8 and 30 meters under the surface. There is also a German fighter jet from World War II and the remains of an English bomber plane. In the diving area near Kühlungsborn you will also find, besides the natural scree fields, the remains of a military glider plane directly at the beach, as well as a steel flying machine about 15 meters underwater approximately 1.25 nautical miles from the beach. In addition, the Bay of Kiel has the wreck of the freight ship “Tjalk” and in the Kiel Fjord rests the old canon boat “Brage”, both of which are a popular goal for a more exciting and multi-faceted diving excursion.

How to berth and anchor a yacht in the Baltic

  • Rachael Sprot
  • December 19, 2023

Rachael Sprot takes a look at the many skils needed to berth or anchor a yacht in the Baltic, from Y-berths to rock moorings

yacht zentrum baltic bay

The Baltic offers rich and extensive cruising grounds, but much of its appeal lies in the opportunity to anchor in remote archipelagos which require a few specialised techniques to confidently tie up.

It’s worth noting that the average yacht in the Baltic is smaller than those in the UK, with 30-35ft seemingly the standard size for a family cruiser. These are often boats built in the 1970s or 1980s with a narrow beam and low freeboard, which means boat handling tends to rely on a push and shove rather than springs and pivot points. Boats over 40ft are more unusual, although they can be accommodated.

There is very little alongside berthing in the Baltic. Last time I was there, a Finnish skipper of a 36-footer berthed alongside a wall took out his seamanship manual to remind himself how to spring off against a cross wind. He did it beautifully, there was no question of his seamanship, it was just a manoeuvre which is rarely required.

There are also very few cleats: the strong points onshore tend to be rings, so you can’t rely on lassoing the dock from the boat. You either need to get a crewmember close enough to feed a line through the ring, or use a boathook with a special mooring clip on it to secure to.

Marina berthing requires nifty line handling from the crew. Berths can be approached stern-to if that’s your preference, which will certainly make leaving the next day a bit easier, in which case just reverse the procedure to set a bowline first and then attach a stern line to the dock.

yacht zentrum baltic bay

Y berths are effective at separating boats but are not intended to be walked upon. Photo: Martin Leisborn

These wobbly structures look like finger berths but they aren’t designed for a person to stand on (as several British sailors have found out the hard way), they merely present a strong point for attaching to and separating the berths. It’s best to make sure you have lines and fenders rigged on both sides before coming in.

As you enter the berth a crewmember standing at the widest point of the boat needs to attach the windward sternline or midships line, depending on your preference. If double-handed, they can then give this to the helm before nipping ashore from the pulpit with the windward bowline. You then need to set up the other lines.

If the berth is very narrow fenders may need to be abandoned. Some Baltic yachts have a rubbing strake, but you can also drape a heavy line over the side to offer topsides protection.

yacht zentrum baltic bay

Box berths require the skipper to squeeze the boat between two piles. Photo: Martin Leisborn

A box berth is similar to a Y berth, but instead of a floating boom between each slot there are two piles to squeeze between.

Again, the key is to secure the windward sternline from midships as you glide past, perhaps with a big bowline lassoed over the top of the post, or a line passed around it. This way it can be pre-rigged for the helmsperson to pull in the slack. Once again the crew then needs to step off with a windward bow line.

In this case fenders can be quite a hindrance as they can get hung up on the posts. Some people prefer to have them lying on the side decks, ready to kick off once you’re through the gap, or rig them horizontally with a sail tie holding the bottom end up.

yacht zentrum baltic bay

Stern buoys are often found in busy harbours and can be some way off the dock. Photo: Martin Leisborn

Stern buoys are a more minimalist approach to berthing and often found in busy harbours. They consist simply of a tall mooring buoy some way off the pontoon. Again, a stern line needs to be attached on the way past, but bear in mind that stern buoys can be 20m or more from the dock, so it needs to be a long line which can be paid out. For ease of departure the next day it helps to set this line to slip, in which case it may need to be very long and requires careful management to ensure that whatever slack is paid out doesn’t end up around the prop.

Many local boats have a long metal hook to which they tie their mooring line, hook the buoy as they go past and then let go, the hook kept in place by gravity and line tension.

There’s usually only one stern buoy. It can be left to windward or leeward on approach and this will often depend on how the other yachts are lying. Securing it on the leeward side of the boat will help keep the yacht square to the dock in a cross wind.

Have your fenders deployed as it’s likely you’ll lie on the yacht next door until you’ve got the fore and aft lines tensioned.

Rock moorings are not for the faint-hearted and require careful inspection for possible underwater protrusions. Photo: Chris Beeson/YM

Rock moorings

The only thing cooler than sailing through the lunar landscape of the Baltic archipelagos is tying up to a rock when you stop. Rock mooring can be done in two ways: bows-to with a kedge anchor or, for the very brave, alongside. Local knowledge, a decent pilot guide or reconnaissance by dinghy is required to identify suitable spots.

If approaching bows to, then the kedge needs to be deployed 2-3 boat lengths out. The helm can pay out the warp while the bow team focus on getting a line ashore. In some places there are mooring eyes in the rocks, but a tree or sturdy boulder also work. Snug up the kedge line to hold the bow off the rocks and drop back to give more clearance overnight.

Check the forecast for wind shifts – you need settled conditions or an offshore wind. You don’t want to end up beam on to a strong wind, as you’ll be entirely reliant on the kedge holding.

Many boats that cruise the Baltic have open pulpits or fold-down bow ladders to make stepping down onto the rock easier. Alternatively, a board lashed in place can make a useful step.

Mooring alongside a rock is not for the faint-hearted. You need to be certain that the rock face is clean with no underwater protrusions. You’ll also need to identify strong points to attach lines to before coming alongside. Some people use climbers’ crevice hooks, but these damage the rocks and should be avoided if possible. A couple of slim tyres are better than fenders as they’ll sink below the waterline. Start off mooring alongside for lunch stops only, and anchor off for a good night’s sleep.

Sailing the untamed Baltic: get inspired by our route

  • Sailing the untamed Baltic: get inspired by our route

This wilder tempestuous northern sea will steal your heart and is truly at its best in late May and early June when the days are the longest and the chicks are beginning to hatch in the local bird reserves. If you try out our recommended Baltic sailing route, you'll not only get to enjoy Rügen, Bornholm, Copenhagen, but more importantly, a thrilling sailing experience.

Recommended Baltic sailing route: from Rügen via Sweden to Denmark

We have prepared for you a sailing route of 350 to 400 NM . If you want to sail hard, it can be done in one week, if you want a more relaxed cruise, set aside 14 days.

Route:  Breege – Bornholm (Svaneke) – Christiansø – Bornholm (Hammerhavn) – Kåseberga – Nyhavn/Copenhagen – Helsingør – Rødvig – Hiddensee (Kloster)

Exhilarating Baltic sailing: from Rujana to the Danish island of Bornholm

Start your Baltic voyage in the port of Breege on Rügen or in the port of Stralsund in Greifswald Bay. When leaving the port, head straight towards the Danish island of Bornholm, 90 to 110 NM.

Where to anchor? On Bornholm , all the harbours are beautiful. If you want to rent a car or motorbike, dock in the capital Ronne or Dueodde harbour, as there are no such options in the other harbours.

Na Borholmu se často konají různé slavnosti

But we recommend sailing to the small port of Svaneke on the east coast. Svaneke is a small town full of half-timbered, red-tiled houses along the coast. There are also a number of pottery and glass workshops here, and you can even watch glass-blowing in a workshop in the centre of town. And because the wind is always blowing, you'll find numerous windmills. Round churches dating back to the 12th century (rundkirke) are also a typical sight in Bornholm.

In the small harbours, you can usually rent a bike and take a fantastic bike tour of the island. Bornholm is partly wooded and has Denmark's highest mountain. So, you can take a challenging mountain bike ride up to 162 m above sea level.

Věž a přístav na ostrově Frederikse

Bird reserve on the islands of Christiansø and Frederiksø

From Svaneke, sail to the small island of Christiansø, one of the most beautiful and remote places in the Baltic. There are two islands, Christiansø and Frederiksø, connected by a footbridge and a small harbour between them. Both islands are part of an important bird reserve and the most amazing time to visit is May and the beginning of June, when geese, ducks, eider ducks and guillemots are hatching and baby birds can be literally seen everywhere.

YACHTING.COM TIP: Weather forecasts, navigation, anchoring... nowadays you'll find mobile apps out there to help you with almost everything. So before you set sail, which apps should you install on your smartphone to make your voyage and life on board that bit easier? Check out  our guide to the  top 10 smartphone apps for sailors .

Na přelomu května a června se na Christianse líhnou ptáci

Christiansø  is surrounded by a wall and was once a strategically important island. Originally a medieval fishing village, the despotic King Kristian V turned it into an invincible naval fortress, a sort of outpost of the Danish navy in the Baltic.

Now, however, it will be the most romantic stop on your journey. Enjoy its atmosphere and its moss-covered rocks, historic stone houses and 17th-century forts. Of course, don't forget to sample the island's fragrant and fresh smoked fish, with herring being the most for Denmark.

Přístav mezi ostrovy Christianse a Frederikse

From Christiansø, head west, and when you pass the northernmost tip of Bornholm, stop at Hammerhaven harbour, from where you can take a beautiful hike to the ruins of one of the largest crusader castles in northern Europe, Hammerhus Slot. Entrance is free.

Swedish Stonehenge: Ales Stenar is shaped like a Viking ship

Sailing further leads you west along the Swedish coast. The first port on the way is called Kåseberga.  It's a pretty little harbour and in the meadows on the cliff, high above the sea, you'll find the sacred Celtic site of Ales Stenar  (Ale's Stones).

Here the Swedes have their very own Stonehenge — a collection of large stones built in the shape of a Viking ship . The entire ship is 67 metres long and consists of 59 boulders, weighing up to 1.8 tons each. It is estimated that this megalithic formation was created in the Iron Age, more than 1,400 years ago.

If you're lucky enough to have a clear moonlit night , visit this site at night. In the moonlight, it has an amazing and truly mystical atmosphere.

The 10 most beautiful harbours in the Baltic

Setting course for copenhagen.

The other ports on the southern coast of Sweden are not quite as interesting. These are the large industrial ports of Ystad and Trelleborg. Leave them on your starboard side and after passing through the Falsterbo channel (there is a drawbridge and it is a good idea to radio in your arrival) head straight for Copenhagen.

Navigation on the approach to Copenhagen is rather interesting, as you sail through the canals between the shallows. Navigating at night to Copenhagen in particular is a genuine treat and can be a little confusing due to the many fairways.

In Copenhagen, stop either at the Langelinie marina by the Little Mermaid statue, where you'll find the Royal Yachting Club, or right on the canal in the city's Nyhavn harbour.

YACHTING.COM TIP: Is it possible to sail in foreign waters with a rented yacht? Find out all you need to know before crossing the border in our article —  Can you cross national borders with a charter boat?

Malá mořská víla v Kodani

In both cases you find yourself docking right in the city. If you manage to anchor at Nyhavn , it’s like parking on a city’s main square, only the scenery will be much more picturesque with brightly coloured houses.

Barevné domečky v centru Kodaně

From Copenhagen, sail about 20 NM north to the pretty port of Helsingør . Here, be sure to visit the royal castle of Kronborg and also the large Gothic church with its hanging sailing ship. It was Kronborg Castle that served as the inspiration for the home of William Shakespeare ’s tragic hero, Hamlet, the Danish prince. Shakespeare, however, rechristened the castle "Elsinore."

In the castle's casemates lies a statue of Denmark's national hero, Ogier the Dane (Holger Danske), the legendary knight of Emperor Charlemagne. When the country is in its darkest days, legend claims that he will wake from his sleep and help drive away Denmark's enemies.

From Helsingor, turn the bow back south and, after stopping off at Rødvig , return in the direction of Germany to Hiddensee, where you’ll find the small port of Kloster .

Přístav na ostrově Hiddensee

The low sandy island of Hiddensee , shaped like a seahorse, is the largest island in the Bay of Pomerania (Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft) and its traditional thatched-roof houses are charming. The island is dominated by the magnificent Dornbusch lighthouse . There are hardly any cars on the island, so the air is beautifully clean.

Make sure to sample the delights of a local pub; enjoy any of the fish specialities or sample products and delicacies made from golden sea buckthorn , which is cultivated on the island.

Dominantou ostrova Hiddensee je překrásný maják Dornbusch

If you have some time left, visit Stralsund Harbour . If you venture further to Greifswald Bay, take note beforehand of the opening hours of the Stralsund Bridge .

What to be on the lookout for when sailing the Baltic

  • Most sailors who are used to sunnier Croatia may worry about the cold, wind, rough seas and rain. Certainly, in the Baltic, there tend to be cooler waters and stronger winds , but it's not an absolute rule.
  • In the Baltic Sea, there are many shallows that require careful attention, and it is navigationally complex — you’re likely to encounter a number of fairways, channels and cardinal marks.
  • In this area, there is also dense traffic of cargo ships , to which you will need to pay attention.
  • The harbours are reasonably priced and exceptionally beautiful, and sailors tend to use them, so you don't have to worry about anchoring offshore.
  • The crossings are longer here , you will encounter considerably fewer marinas along the way than in Croatia (where there are marinas, buoys or islands almost every step of the way), and so you may find yourself having to sail further even when fatigued.
  • Be sure to take advantage of the incredible variety  of local fish . It’s always perfectly fresh, whether smoked, fried, pickled, baked or simply in a baguette.

HALF A CENTURY OF WORLD CLASS YACHT BUILDING

28 june 2023.

In just five decades Baltic Yachts has evolved from respected series production boat builder to the world’s best composite custom yacht manufacturer, the go-to yard for innovation, performance and a hand-crafted finish second to none.

Baltic Yachts has become firmly established as one of the best superyacht builders in the world, renowned for its comprehensive knowledge of advanced composite building materials and its skilled workers’ ability to innovate with the latest materials and technology.

The company has achieved this in just 50 years and celebrations are now underway to mark its foundation and recognise its success through the 566 boats it has built.

In the modern era, names like Visione, Nilaya, Hetairos, Pink Gin, Nikata, WinWin, Perseverance and Canova dominate the world’s regatta podiums and awards ceremonies and with the company’s latest launches, including the Baltic 110 Zemi and the ground-breaking, Baltic 111 Custom, it maintains its dominance at the leading edge of superyacht sailing technology.

The significance of Queen Anne

As Baltic Yachts prepares to celebrate its foundation in Bosund in 1973, with a party for 500 including our workers, local partners and international guests at its Jakobstad headquarters, it’s appropriate that the very first yacht it built, the C&C-designed Baltic 46 Diva, now Queen Anne, will also be in attendance along with her owner and the owners and friends of the recently launched Baltic 110 Zemi. Queen Anne underwent a refit in Bosund, the place of her birth, and with a new engine, freshly painted topsides, new hatches, a refurbished teak deck and updated instrumentation, is almost as good as new.

yacht zentrum baltic bay

Baltic 46 Queen Anne (originally named Diva) – the first ever Baltic yacht

Her presence is doubly significant because she not only demonstrates the sustainability of yachts Baltic built 50 years ago, using what was then the latest boat building technology like balsa sandwich construction, unidirectional glass fibre and tank tested design, but she also illustrates the story of Baltic’s foundation.

In the beginning…

In 1973, superyachting, the genre with which we are familiar today, was non-existent, but series production boat building was really getting into its stride. One of its leading proponents, Nautor Swan, based in Jakobstad, was successfully building yachts for a growing global market and had established an enviable reputation.

Despite this, a small group of the company’s young boat builders had devised ways of building boats lighter and stiffer to improve performance. They tried to convince their managers at Nautor it was the way ahead, but their ideas fell on deaf ears.

Convinced their theories would work, five young men, Per-Göran ‘PG’ Johansson, Tor Hinders, Nils Luoma, Ingmar Sundelin and Jan-Erik Nyfelt struck out on their own, setting up Baltic Yachts in the small village of Bosund just north of Jakobstad.

yacht zentrum baltic bay

The first shed in the pine forest outside the village of Bosund

Generations of skilled workers

Why Bosund? It is no coincidence that modern yacht building of the highest standard continues to thrive in the area of Finland known as Ostrobothnia. Generations of skilled wood-workers built warships and trading vessels as long ago as the 16 th Century, supporting Finland and Sweden’s vast fleets of ships which travelled the world. Seafaring was part of the local population’s DNA and plentiful local timber made the area a natural choice for ship building.

In many ways those traditions are still very much in evidence and in 1973 the most important resource for the fledgling Baltic Yachts was a skilled local workforce. The Baltic Yachts Family came into being and now aged 50 is very much alive and well!

It was a tough winter start, snow falling relentlessly as the new company built its first boatshed. But their first model, the ambitious 46-footer Diva already described, reflected everything Baltic’s founders stood for – she was comparatively light, stiff and fast and was selected for the Canadian Admiral’s Cup team in 1975.

Boom time at the Hamburg Boat Show

The Hamburg Boat Show was a key outlet for Baltic in the early days with 15 sales in 1975 followed by 26 the following year. Although series production was the business model which underpinned Baltic’s early success, there were already signs of customisation and in Thomas Friese’s C&C-designed Baltic 42 Tina I-Punkt it was all-embracing. She was an out and out racing yacht designed to the IOR (International Offshore Rule) to fit the so-called Two Ton rating band (I.O.R. Rating under 32ft) which was particularly popular and successful at the time in the USA and in Europe. This heavily customised yacht was a sign of things to come.

But even PG and his team couldn’t have foreseen the phenomenal success of the Baltic 39 which sold out at its premiere in Hamburg in 1977 and went on to become the company’s most successful design in terms of numbers, with 74 sold. Her designers, Cuthbertson and Cassian (C&C) and their chief naval architect, the late Rob Ball, had impressed PG Johansson because of their use of VPP (velocity prediction program) computer calculations and other advanced design techniques which mirrored PG’s own belief in improving yachts with modern methods.

yacht zentrum baltic bay

Baltic 39 – our first major commercial success

The International Offshore Rule resulted in yachts which, like the Baltic 39, were particularly fast upwind, but like many racing yachts of this era, were fully fitted out and made excellent family cruising yachts too. Combined with the quality of build these were very effective selling points.

The Hollming era

In the late 1970s the new company was dealt a body blow by the global oil crisis and sought a new owner. The giant ship builder Hollming Oy believed in Baltic’s approach and provided the resources to support its rapid growth, fund the development of new models and build a sales organisation. Baltic Yachts would remain part of Hollming for 12 years and during this period was famously asked by its owner to assist in the development of a secret Russian submarine by providing input for its composite shell structure. Despite some political controversy over the project, it was a productive exercise, the vacuum-infused, epoxy resin technology directly benefitting the build of the Baltic 43 Bully.

Expansion, masts and Midnight Sun

A combination of factors in the late 70s and early 80s saw Baltic advance dramatically as carbon fibre was first used. The new Baltic 51 showcased many of the technical developments the company had evolved using computer aided design and engineering. And in Bosund a new building hall was opened, vastly increasing production capacity and enabling much larger yachts to be built.  All sorts of innovation was in evidence, including pneumatically-powered cradles which would allow yachts to be moved effortlessly across the super-smooth floors of the new facility.

Baltic’s policy of drilling down into design and developing its own specification and checks for construction was not only beneficial for the quality of its yachts, but also impressed clients who were increasingly keen to get involved to learn how their yachts were built. They were actively encouraged to visit the yard to see their yacht under construction, something some other builders discouraged.

Baltic’s approach to design enabled the company to start building its own masts around 1980, their black anodised finish becoming a hallmark. The ability to build on site and on time greatly assisted production.

yacht zentrum baltic bay

Baltic Yachts mast production (first picture) and Baltic 80 Midnight Sun (second picture), one of the first large, fully composite racing yachts in the world

By the 1980s there were clear signs that clients were looking at bigger and faster yachts with the associated need for complete customisation. The Baltic 80 Midnight Sun was the first fully composite racing yacht in the world, built as an IOR maxi for a Swedish owner who wanted to move on from successful Admiral’s Cup campaigns. Built using a super-light end grain balsa core in her hull she was quick upwind and enjoyed success on the maxi circuit before being converted into a luxury cruising yacht.

Lisbeth Staffans takes the helm

A need to return to their core business forced the Hollming Group to dispose of Baltic Yachts in 1990 which led to a management and employee buyout which saw 34 managers and workers including PG Johansson and Jan Erik Nyfelt immediately becoming owners of the business. The existing marketing manager Lisbeth Staffans (picture below) became managing director.

yacht zentrum baltic bay

Her style of management, driven by straightforward communication, honesty and transparency across the business, plus strict financial controls, returned the yard to profitability. Lisbeth Staffans led the company for 18 years during which time Baltic Yachts went from strength to strength and took it to the cusp of the game changing era of modern superyachting.

One of the first genuine multi-role supersailing yachts which took part in the increasingly popular superyacht regattas springing up in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, was Anny, an 87ft all-carbon yacht from the board of judel/vrolijk. The German naval architect had already designed numerous Baltic production models prefacing a future in which they would become key, especially in larger superyachts.

With her lifting keel, extensive hydraulic systems and tender garage, Anny could be regularly seen at the front of superyacht racing fleets, particularly in Palma de Mallorca. She remained successful for many years.

Demand for the dual-role superyacht

The burgeoning superyacht regatta scene, many of the new ones trying to emulate the success of the St Barths Bucket in the Caribbean, offered a new dimension to ownership with many demanding a genuine dual-role yacht, one equally at home on the race course as crossing oceans and visiting the world’s remotest cruising grounds. This provided a great opportunity for builders of large sailing yachts, one which Baltic grasped with enthusiasm.

Anny was followed in the later 1990s by the Bill Dixon designed Vittfarne and the Baltic 70 Loftari, the former a classic looking yacht above the waterline with a high-performance underwater shape and the latter with an entirely pre-preg carbon and Nomex interior which demonstrated how large amounts of weight could be saved by building ultra-lightweight interiors.

yacht zentrum baltic bay

Baltic 70 Loftfari was the first yacht with a fully fitted interior built entirely in prepreg carbon and Nomex

Baltic Yachts has built a number of motor yachts and while it cannot be regarded as a regular part of its portfolio a lot of information was gained about sound deadening which transferred to sailing yachts to great effect. The Raymond Hunt-designed M48 Far Niente and her slightly larger sistership Ben Nevis were powerful seagoing motor yachts delivered in the late 90s. Baltic later built the Mani Frers-designed M78 Bill and Me, a stylish offshore motor yacht.

Baltic at the leading edge of technology

By the turn of the century advances in technology were gaining even greater pace, exemplified by the Baltic 78 Super Baltic 5 which sported a canting rather than lifting keel, an additional benefit of which was virtually no loss of internal space, as the hydraulic canting mechanism was contained almost entirely beneath the cabin sole.

yacht zentrum baltic bay

High-tech cruiser-racer Baltic 78 Super Baltic 5

At the yard the company installed a 5m X 3m lamination press which meant they could custom build composite parts like bulkheads and interior components to its own specification ensuring that weight savings could be made without compromising strength or durability.

Iconic Visione

And then, in 2002, an iconic commission was secured to build the extraordinary and technically advanced Baltic 147 Visione. With naval architecture by Reichel Pugh and all the design and engineering capacity at Baltic Yachts coming to the fore, Visione became a marker by which many subsequent performance superyachts were judged. Even today, 22 years after her launch, she is still capable of winning.

To say Visione was ahead of her time is an understatement. She remains a development project to this day, and has been updated and used as a testbed for a multitude of new ideas and technological breakthroughs. In a way she fired the starting gun for the race to build new superyachts, a plethora of which followed from Baltic driven by technology which made them easier to sail, faster, more competitive and more fun!

yacht zentrum baltic bay

Baltic 147 Visione (first picture) and Baltic 141 Canica (second picture)

The first genuine supercruiser was the 141ft Canica, a complex yacht using all the advanced composite building experience accumulated by Baltic’s design engineers resulting in a yacht displacing half that of a typical 140-footer – and there was no compromise on comfort. She was the first yacht with a Siemens PLC computer control system and to reduce vibration and noise levels her entire accommodation was set on shock absorbers so that, in effect, it ‘floated’ within the hull shell.

A waterside home in Jakobstad

Ten years into the new century Baltic Yachts realised its dream of its own waterside premises. The Jakobstad yard was a state-of-the-art building which enabled larger yachts to be built and reduced the complex and expensive trucking operation from Bosund 23km away. It also provided deep water access for yachts returning to Finland for a refit.

yacht zentrum baltic bay

This development went hand in hand with the yard becoming the first of its type in the world to achieve ISO standards in quality, environment and occupational health and safety. Baltic Yachts was also awarded full DNV GL certification giving customers peace of mind over the performance of all aspects of the building operation.

2010 saw the launch of the highly successful Reichel/Pugh designed Baltic 112 Nilaya, which epitomised the superyacht racer/cruiser genre many owners sought. The yacht won almost every regatta she entered benefitting from grand prix pedigree design combined with Baltic’s exacting engineering and build standards designed to save weight. In short, Nilaya was an all-round winner.

The Professor provides stability and vision

Shortly into the new decade, new owners for the company were sought as the shareholding staff began to retire. In March 2013 Professor Hans Georg Näder, a keen yachtsman and a Baltic customer acquired an 80 per cent stake in the company through his family-owned prosthetics company Ottobock.

yacht zentrum baltic bay

Professor Hans Georg Näder and PG during the christening of Baltic 175 Pink Gin

Professor Näder’s enthusiasm and vision was a shot in the arm for the company and he eventually increased his stake to become sole owner ensuring Baltic Yachts’ financial independence and solvency. He also appointed Henry Hawkins as Executive Vice President, a former yacht captain who brought a wealth of sailing knowledge and industry contacts to Baltic.

A presence in Palma – superyachting’s service capital

Not long afterwards, the first moves to establish a Service and Refit base in Palma de Mallorca got underway. Service and the need to look after everyone in what had now become a large Baltic Family became high on the company’s agenda. Today, the Palma operation is a vital part of Baltic Yachts providing refit, modifications and almost any service requirement in the heart of the western Mediterranean’s superyacht action.

For the next 12 years a succession of remarkable yachts was launched, many of which became award winners while others dominated the superyacht race courses of the world. Hetairos remains one of the most spectacular modern sailing yachts ever launched, her neo-classic styling hiding a phenomenal performance made possible by full carbon composite construction and a massive ketch rig with a mizzen sailplan almost as powerful as the main. An enormous lifting keel and a cassette style lifting rudder were examples of the advanced engineering required to make this yacht a success.

The Baltic 115 Nikata was a highly successful, stylish multi-role superyacht taking part in the RORC’s iconic Fastnet and Caribbean 600 races and the Middle Sea Race while providing a superb platform in cruising mode. At 130ft My Song was a study in exterior and interior design and as much at home on the race course as crossing oceans, while the Javier Jaudennes designed WinWin accumulated almost as much silverware as Nilaya.

A mix of Pink Gins

A string of Pink Gins built by Baltic saw the latest iteration, Pink Gin VI, launch in 2017. She is still the largest carbon fibre sloop in the world and notable for some advanced structural engineering which enables two large fold-down platforms to be set into her topsides, the forward one providing the owner’s cabin with a magnificent private balcony and swimming platform.

Baltic 175 Pink Gin – the largest full carbon sloop in the world

By 2018, technical advances in sailing were moving at such a pace that design features normally seen on much more performance-orientated yachts were now being considered at superyacht scale. Baltic Yachts’ ability to meet the challenges these design innovations set made it a natural choice for customers looking for something special.

First foil-assisted superyacht

In the Baltic 142 Canova, the world saw the first foil-assisted superyacht using a Dynamic Stability System (DSS) sliding foil set athwartships in a cassette beneath the owner’s cabin. When deployed to leeward the 9m long foil provided lift to reduce heel and also dampen pitching motion.

Baltic 142 Canova – the first ocean cruising superyacht with a DSS foil

The yacht was also one of the first to be fitted with an electric propulsion motor, large banks of lithium-ion batteries and the ability to charge them using her free-wheeling propeller while sailing. This reduced the use of internal combustion engines for propulsion and charging, cut emissions and took a large step towards improving the ‘green’ credentials of superyachts.

The move to power yachts with electric motors, big battery banks and the propeller-driven hydrogeneration developed by Baltic Yachts and its partners, has rapidly gained pace in recent years although in 2020 the company launched the Baltic 146 Path which opted for a conventional drive train. This yacht’s construction was complicated by the devastating COVID pandemic but she was launched to schedule and kept the company going over a difficult two-year period.

Apart from her sheer size – the third largest yacht by volume built by Baltic – Path had a remarkable combined deck saloon and covered cockpit the hardtop ‘bimni’ for which was also a landing for the largest array of solar panels ever seen on a sailing yacht.

Testbed for technology

Two smaller semi-production yachts were also gaining in popularity at this time. The Baltic 68 Café Racer was conceived as a testbed for sustainable build materials and rig technology designed to make a high-performance yacht easier to sail for a short-handed crew. Naturally grown flax instead of carbon was used as a reinforcement in 50per cent of the hull and deck mouldings, a swept spreader Marstrom rig and Doyle Sails’ Structured Luff technology were used to improve performance and simplify sailing, while cork decks and twin electric motors all combined to provide a glimpse of what, in the future, might be the norm.

Baltic 68 Café Racer Pink Gin Verde – hull number one in our latest semi-custom series

The third Baltic 67PC, Freedom, was launched last year, a different take on a series production hull designed to speed up build time and control costs. The 67 also provides an opportunity for highly efficient shorthanded, long-distance sailing and offers a multitude of interior layouts and finishes.

Modern classics are occasionally commissioned, their looks often belying the use of the very latest in superyachting technology. The Baltic 117 Perseverance is no exception, her elegant lines, straight stem, long counter and deep bulwarks giving the impression of a vessel from another era. But she has electric propulsion, hydro-generation, optimised pump technology and her superlight hull and easy to manage rig make her a very potent sailing yacht.

Luxury world class cruiser – Baltic 110 Zemi

Epitome of the modern superyacht

Just launched and available for viewing at Baltic Yachts’ Anniversary party is the stunning looking Baltic 110 Zemi, the second yacht built by the company to a Malcolm McKeon design. Her metallic bronze hull is complemented by a stunning teak deck and superstructure while her systems represent the very latest in superyacht design and engineering. She is the epitome of a fast, luxurious world class cruiser with serious racing potential.

Baltic 111 Custom – in a class of her own

It is perhaps entirely appropriate that Baltic Yachts’ 50 th Anniversary Party coincides with the near completion of the most extreme yacht the company has ever built.

Her, aesthetics, control systems, rig, generating and propulsion systems use the most advanced engineering, building and design techniques available in yachting.

Baltic Yachts was chosen to build this ultra-lightweight yacht because her owner believed it has the track record, design and engineering ability and, above all, highly skilled workforce to meet the immense challenges Baltic 111 Custom sets.

What a birthday present!

Cool Cruiser

We have just booked a cruise to the Baltics for next year. I am trying to find out the average cost for a day trip to Moscow from STP. I have searched several times, and whilst I have read reviews and reports about the trips etc - I cannot actually see any examples of the costs. I imagine its quite expensive - but we want to do it so I need to budget LOL !!

Any ballpark figures ? :D

We did the Moscow trip through our cruise ship in late July 2008. Its cost was a little under $1000 pp. Now, that cost through this cruise line is a little over that $1000 pp cost. Now, most are using the high-speed rail connection versus the air flights as we did. I have seen some other numbers from other cruise lines and/or private firms that run $700-850.

Why cheaper or the differences? As cruise lines are pressured to keep their "sticker price" low, they need to make up some "margin" with ship tours, beverages, spa stuff, etc., to help cover their costs and gain some profit. Second, different tours provide various features. Our tour included going inside the famed and spectacular Kremlin Palace. Most Moscow tours don't feature that option and you cannot just walk up there and get in on your own. That Palace is where the Czars were crowned and all of the current/recent Russian leaders assumed their powers.

We could have saved a little if we had used a private tour to go to and visit Moscow, but, with my wife's pushing, we felt it was worth it to pay a little more, do it through the cruise line. If there had been any problems or mix-ups, it was the ship's duty to "make it right" and we would not have to worry.

If you have three days in St. Petersburg and/or have been there before, then the Moscow tour can work out very well. It's not cheap, but in my view, worth it!! Both are a few of my visuals from this super great city with such interesting history and dramatic architecture.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

One of the Kremlin Wall Towers in Moscow:

Walking on the famed Red Square of Moscow:

St. Basil's sits on Red Square and dates back to its 1555-61 construction on the orders of Ivan the Terrible (Ivan IV). It commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan and marks the geometric center of the city. This location has been the hub of its growth for Moscow since the 14th century. It was the tallest building in Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600. This church was near destroyed in the 1930’s when Stalin was in control.:

Here is a small sampling of the Kremlin Royal Treasures of the Czars: Eggs & Jewels insicde the famed Armory.:

Moscow’s subways are called the “People’s Palaces” with their marble coverings and unique designs for each of the different and many stations.:

This is the interior for Moscow's most historic church, Assumption Cathedral or the Cathedral of the Dormition, inside the Kremlin walls. It is the mother church of Muscovite Russia. The church stands on Cathedral Square and was built in 1475–1479 by the Italian architect Aristotele Fioravanti. It was erected on the spot of an older 14th century cathedral of the same name:

We did the day trip to Moscow with Alla-tour and were very pleased with our tour. Our guide whose English was great was a wealth of information and the day went very smoothly. I checked the web site and Alla's prices for 2012 range from $884 a person for two down to $542 a person for 6 with the 5% cruisecritic discount. So if you can get a group together the per person price goes down considerably. You can try to do this on the roll call section of cruisecritic.

We did not go to the Palace and as Terry says this is not included generally in tours. However, we did go to the Diamond Fund, an amazing display of crown jewels and jewelry in the Armoury building but not really part of the Armoury. I would think you could include this if you had a small group and really wanted to see it. It is quite small and does not accommodate a large group. You can google "diamond fund kremlin" to learn more.

Zemi is also the third Baltic to be equipped with an electric propulsion system. Twin 129 kW Cummins generators provide grunt to a large bank of lithium-ion batteries that power an electric Danfoss motor. Baltic says the e-motor is quieter, cleaner, and smoother than traditional internal combustion mills. In fact, Zemi can cruise in “silent mode” sans emissions for long periods, according to the brand.

In addition, the yacht is equipped with twin rudders and a telescopic lifting keel with a 27-ton bulb that can reduce the draught from 20 feet to 13. It also has several headsail options that are suitable to different weather conditions.

Spearheaded by Andreas Martin-Löf, the interior features walnut and limestone veneers, sleek, modern furnishings, and cleverly integrated lighting. The main cockpit can be enjoyed in all conditions, with a fold-down spray hood and full-length removable bimini protecting guests from the elements. (Alternatively, the space can be left open for lounging in the sun.) Below deck lies a lounge, galley, and cabin for overnight journeys.

Another distinctive element of Zemi is McKeon trademark, wrap-over teak decking that runs from the bow right to the edge of the transom. The transom is expandable, too, meaning that the water is even easier to access from the swim platform. Also at the stern is a large garage that can hold a Williams tender.
