Steve Jobs' Apple inspired super yacht revealed in Netherlands

AppleInsider Staff's Avatar

Images and video of Venus were published by Dutch Apple blog One More Thing ( via The Verge ) , and show a sleek, minimalistic vessel sharing an aesthetic very much on par with the products Jobs' had a hand in creating at Apple.

According to reports, the roughly 80-meter long hull of the ship is made completely of aluminum, while huge plate windows adorn the wheelhouse, saloon and main deck entrances, giving the ship a clean, open appearance. Continuing the spartan styling inside, the wheelhouse uses seven 27-inch iMacs running navigation, systems control and other seafaring software to assist in operating Venus.

Not much is known of the cabin arrangement or number of crew needed to sail, but the super yacht is expected to be freighted from Aalsmeer to her home port in the U.S.

As a gesture of gratitude, each worker involved with the ship's construction was given an iPod shuffle with a "Venus" engraving, along with a note from the Jobs family thanking them for their craftsmanship.

Thank You Note

Venus was first mentioned by Jobs' biographer Walter Isaacson in 2011:

As expected, the planned yacht was sleek and minimalist. The teak decks were perfectly flat and unblemished by any accoutrements. As at an Apple store, the cabin windows were large panes, almost floor to ceiling, and the main living area was designed to have walls of glass that were forty feet long and ten feet high. He had gotten the chief engineer of the Apple stores to design a special glass that was able to provide structural support. By then the boat was under construction by the Dutch custom yacht builders Feadship, but Jobs was still fiddling with the design. "I know that it’s possible I will die and leave Laurene with a half-built boat," he said. "But I have to keep going on it. If I don’t, it’s an admission that I’m about to die."

Renowned French designer Philippe Starck caused a small media firestorm in April, when he announced that Apple would be releasing a "revolutionary" new product of his design within eight months. After a quick denial from Apple, Starck confirmed that the "product" was in fact the super yacht revealed today.

Venus Stern

Jobs apparently began designing Venus after returning from an Italy to Turkey cruise, which he called his "best vacation" ever. He repeatedly redesigned the boat and nearly canceled the project due to illness in 2009.

"I didn't think I would be alive when it got done," Jobs told Isaacson. "But that made me so sad, and I decided that working on the design was fun to do, and maybe I have a shot at being alive when it's done."

Apple founder’s megayacht “Venus” in St Maarten

By Sonja van der Drift in Blog with 0 Comments

Steve Jobs mega yacht Venus moored in St Maarten

Our friend Rick Moore was filming in Simpson Bay at St Maarten, Caribbean and they came across “VENUS” sitting proudly at anchor, just getting ready to head to sea!  They also filmed several other yachts, including the 157ft SuperYacht “C2”, owned by Ronald Perelman.. Billionaire investor and philanthropist with holdings in Revlon Group of women’s cosmetics, and AM General which is the company known for the Hummer and Humvee utility vehicles.

Super yacht “Venus” was the direct brain child of the late Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple for many years. Co-designed by Philippe Starck’s design company Ubik and built by Feadship (from my home country of the Netherlands), this yacht elegantly boasts pure simplicity in line with Steve Job’s desire to design private, quiet places that provided the Zen like atmosphere that he preferred. Steve was once quoted as saying, “I’ve tried to be inspired by the Asian idea that emptiness is more important than fullness”

Unfortunately, Steve Jobs passed away before ever getting to see his final masterpiece come to life, but the family brought the project to completion and now “VENUS” roams the Earth in Steve’s memory with a fixed crew of 22 onboard.

Thanks, Rick Moore for sharing this informative video, about some of the more private information about the co- founder, chairman, and CEO of Apple Inc.

Today in Apple history: Steve Jobs’ yacht launches — without Steve

By Luke Dormehl • 1:10 pm, October 28, 2023

  • Top stories

Steve Jobs' yacht was designed by Philippe Starck.

Called Venus , the distinctive-looking yacht was one of the big personal projects Jobs pursued in his last years. As he told biographer Walter Isaacson, “I have to keep going on it. If I don’t, it’s an admission that I’m about to die.”

Sadly, Jobs never lived to see the finished vessel.

Steve Jobs’ yacht launches

The yacht was the product of six years of design and construction work. Despite the Apple co-founder’s vast fortune, many who knew him personally registered surprised that such a project would appeal to him. Even Jobs himself denied desiring such a craft.

“ There’s no yacht in my future ,” he told journalist John Markoff in 1980.

As Jobs later told Isaacson, however, the yacht represented something: a confidence that he would be able to overcome his health troubles. He began working on it around 2008, just prior to his liver transplant .

Designed by Philippe Starck

The $118 million, 256-foot yacht proved somewhat divisive in terms of its design. Although it is the work of renowned French designer Philippe Starck , it bears Jobs’ and Apple’s fingerprints. Jobs recruited the chief designer of the Apple stores to create a special glass for the vessel. And while on board, the owner could control the  Venus  via a row of 27-inch iMacs.

“As expected, the planned yacht was sleek and minimalist ,” Isaacson wrote. “The teak decks were perfectly flat and unblemished by any accoutrements. As at an Apple store, the cabin windows were large panes, almost floor to ceiling, and the main living area was designed to have walls of glass that were forty feet long and ten feet high.”

Jobs’ widow, Laurene, attended the October 28, 2012, launch of the yacht. (So did his children, who used the yacht in the years since.)

Before the launch could happen, however, the ship suffered another setback. Authorities impounded it in an Amsterdam port  due to an outstanding payment owed to designer Starck.

If you’re interested, you can keep tabs on Venus’ location around the world using data from ShipSpotting.com .

Steve Jobs' final project: an Apple-inspired superyacht

The late apple co-founder steve jobs' final project, an 80-metre long superyacht named venus, was finally floated out at the weekend over a year after the design guru's untimely death..

If it looks like a floating Apple Store, it is because its creator was the late Steve Jobs.

Venus is the result of what happens when the superyacht concept and a design guru collide, and it was officially launched on Sunday in the Dutch port of Aalsmeer, just over a year after the Apple co-founder died.

However, Feadship, the custom yacht builder, which realised Jobs' dream for him, was giving nothing away about the price tag, nor were the Jobs family who were on hand for the naming.

In fact the only details available for the 80-metre long, all-aluminium superyacht come from last year's Walter Isaacson biography of the great man, in an extract in which he describes how Jobs revealed his particular passion. "After our omelettes at the cafe, we went back to his house and he showed me all of the models and architectural drawings," wrote Isaacson.

"As expected, the planned yacht was sleek and minimalist. The teak decks were perfectly flat and unblemished by any accoutrements.

"As at an Apple store, the cabin windows were large panes, almost floor to ceiling, and the main living area was designed to have walls of glass that were 40ft long and 10ft high. He had gotten the chief engineer of the Apple stores to design a special glass that was able to provide structural support.

"'I know that it's possible I will die and leave Laurene [his wife] with a half-built boat," Jobs said. 'But I have to keep going on it. If I don't, it's an admission that I'm about to die.'"

Jobs reportedly spent six years designing and constructing the vessel with help from the French product designer Philippe Starck, who also designed a controversial superyacht for the Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko - a 394ft confection simply namedA.

Jobs began designing Venus after returning from cruising between Italy and Turkey, which he described as his "best vacation" ever. He repeatedly redesigned the boat and nearly cancelled the project because of his illness in 2009.

"I didn't think I would be alive when it got done," Jobs said later. "But that made me so sad, and I decided that working on the design was fun to do, and maybe I have a shot at being alive when it's done."

The Jobs family gave the shipbuilderscustomised iPod shuffles and a note thanking them for their "hard work and craftsmanship".

It is unclear if the yacht will ever be delivered to the family, or indeed what the future holds for it.

Steve Jobs's Secret Yacht Looks Like a Giant iPhone

Just over a year after Steve Jobs's death, shipbuilders in Aalsmeer, Holland have finally finished the yacht that the Apple visionary spent years designing -- stealthily, of course.

yacht apple

Just over a year after Steve Jobs's death, shipbuilders in Aalsmeer, Holland have finally finished the yacht that the Apple visionary spent years designing -- stealthily, of course. Boy, does it look like an Apple product. Her name is Venus .

Built entirely out of aluminum, the yacht was designed by Jobs personally along with some help from French designer Phillipe Starck. It's a big one, too. The ship measures between 70 and 80 meters , but because of the aluminum construction, it's lighter than your typical yacht, giving it a bit of an edge when it comes to speed. It doesn't lack amenities, either. The front of the ship is equipped with a uniquely large sun deck with a jacuzzi built in. Behind that comes an all glass cabin that's topped with a bridge equipped with seven 27-inch iMacs that handle the ship's navigation and controls. When you take a step back, squint a little and turn your head to the left, it sort of looks like an iPhone 4 with the strip of windows around the middle and the clean lines.

Jobs's yacht project might seem a little out of character at first. After all, the billionaire was famously humble about many aspects of his lifestyle. He lived in a normal house on a normal suburban street in Palo Alto, California, not some massive mansion out in the mountains. He wore jeans, a black turtleneck sweater and New Balance tennis shoes , a basically thrifty choice for a man who could afford his own cashmere farm. He also  drove a very nice car , but it wasn't rapper nice. That is, it wasn't a Bentley or an Aston Martin or a Maybach -- just a Mercedes. (Ok, now we're stretching the humble thing, but you get the point.)

We now know that Steve Jobs was not a stranger to the finer aspects of being filthy rich, luxuries like chrome-coated yachts and custom-built private jets . But hey, the guy wanted to retire one day, and so what if he wanted to live like a king after building the world's most valuable technology company. Walter Isaacson wrote about the yacht in his biography of Steve Jobs, who had evidently been working on the project alone for six years:

After our omelets at the café, we went back to his house and he showed me all of the models and architectural drawings.

Sadly, Jobs did die before the yacht was finished, but the folks at Feadship finished the job. Evidently, the Jobs family recently had a little christening party with the shipbuilders, who all got an iPod Shuffle with "Venus" engraved on the back as a token of thanks. Now that we said all that stuff about Jobs and conspicuous consumption, you'd think they could have at least splurged for the iPod Touch.

Check out the chrome plates on the bow. The sleek windows that wrap around the middle of the ship is where the Jobs family quarters are. The crew gets the little portholes underneath.

You can see the row of iMacs in the bridge.

End-to-end, it's a pretty impressive vessel.

Meet Project Cosmos: 1,000 mile range, emissions-free megayacht from Apple Watch designer

Avatar for Scooter Doll

German luxury boatbuilder Lürssen Yachts has shared video footage of it successfully launching a zero-emissions megayacht longer than two olympic swimming pools, suspected to be commissioned by a Japanese billionaire. The exterior of hydrogen powered megayacht, codenamed Project Cosmos, is being designed by Apple designer Marc Newson.

Lürssen Yachts is a legacy boatbuilder with German roots dating as far back at 1860. After initially starting out building racing rowboats, Lürssen constructed the world’s first motorboat in 1886. It has gone bigger and better in the century and a half since that milestone, gaining a reputation in the maritime industry for consistently pushing the limits of engineering and innovation within its unique vessels.

Lürssen first committed to using fuel cells way back in 2009 and has been operating a methanol-hydrogen fuel cell power plant since 2012. That technology is present in its current megayacht build, Project Cosmos – which just made its technical launch onto the waters of Germany.

It’s a work in progress that still has a couple years to go, but you can already get a scope of its size and unique design from the images below.

megayacht

This megayacht can operate for 15 days without emissions

Lürssen Yachts uploaded a new video to YouTube today sharing the successful technical launch of the Project Cosmos from its facility in Germany, just five days after officially unveiling the megyacht in a separate video.

This is the public’s first genuine glimpse of the vessel despite it entering year three of construction. As you can see from the images above, Project Cosmos is a massive 114.2. meter (~375 ft) megayacht featuring an explorer-style profile, meaning the vessel’s the superstructure has been positioned more forward to allow for a larger aft deck.

Other features spotted from the YouTube footage include a swimming pool and some sort of large cut-out, which could be used to stow a separate smaller (but still quite large) vessel (preferably electric, right?). Up top, you’ll notice what appears to be a 360-degree viewing area as well as a helipad on the bridge deck below.

According to  Boat International , the exterior of the megayacht is being designed by Australian designer Marc Newson, who helped form the look of the Apple Watch in 2015. On the maritime side, Newson also designed a 140-meter superyacht called Solaris for Russian Billionaire Roman Abramovich.

The star of the show (at least to us), however, is the unique hydrogen powertrain Lürssen has implemented in the megayacht. Luxury Launches points out that rather than stow and tote massive liquid hydrogen tanks aboard, Project Cosmos will utilize readily available methanol which still carries plenty of hydrogen in its chemical makeup.

The waste result is still just water, offering a viable zero-emissions solution at sea that Lürssen hopes will influence future megayacht builds, especially since some of the traditional ultra-large vessels have larger carbon footprints that entire island nations.

Hydrogen power clearly offers a better solution, especially since Lürssen Yachts states the Project Cosmos’ green propulsion system enables its owner to anchor down for 15 nights without emissions. In terms of range at sea, the megayacht will be able to slow cruise for over 1,000 miles, again emissions-free.

The hydrogen powered megayacht is believed to be commissioned by Japanese billionaire entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa . Maezawa was seen onboard the vessel during the technical launch in the video below – the Japanese flag hung from the railing of the yacht is also a clear hint.

Lürssen Yachts is expected to complete delivery of the Project Cosmos megayacht in 2025. See more below:

What candela’s electric hydrofoiling passenger ferry means for sustainable transportation.

The all-electric-powered Candela P-12 ferry flies over the water on hydrofoils

I would never say “I told you so,” but…now that Candela , the world’s leading producer of all-electric-powered hydrofoiling boats, has just closed the largest funding round in the company's history, I might be bold enough to say…”I’m not surprised.”

That’s because I’ve been closely following the development of this wonderfully smart company’s hydrofoiling boats since I test flew a P-7 near their small and efficient shop in Stockholm in 2021. So, I’m really not surprised they just raised over $25 million to expand production of their game-changing P-12 ferry. And since yacht building powerhouse Groupe Beneteau is a key partner in the largest fundraising round Candela has ever completed it appears Candela’s brand of tech-controled hydrofoiling is about to go global.

“Our investment perfectly aligns with Groupe Beneteau‘s ecological transition objectives, scaling up innovative solutions for more sustainable boating and unparalleled experiences,” says Bruno Thivoyon, CEO of Groupe Beneteau, the world's largest boat manufacturer (15 factories, 9 brands, and more than 8,000 yachts built annually) with a total revenue of over $1.5 billion in 2023. “Candela’s technology, enabling significantly more efficient electric vessels, will transform waterborne transport into its next sustainable phase.”

A Candela P-8 and P-12 underway near Stockholm, Sweden

“We couldn’t be more excited about having Groupe Beneteau on board,” says Gustav Hasselskog, Founder and CEO of Candela. “As the leading global boat company, their trust is a stamp of approval for our technology to transform waterborne transportation. We’re excited for the possibilities ahead."

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

The new investment round will help to scale up production to meet demand for the recently launched Candela P-12, the world’s first electric hydrofoil ferry. The P-12 is the first fast and long-range electric ferry on the market. Its efficient hydrofoil technology cuts lifetime emissions by 97.5% compared to diesel vessels, while simultaneously allowing operators to save up to 50% in operating costs. Since it generates minimal wake, the P-12 has been granted exemptions from speed limits, as for example on its maiden route in Stockholm, where it from July will cut travel times in half compared to road transport and legacy diesel vessels.

And it’s pretty obvious Hasselskog and company are on the right track. According to some projections the market for electric vessels is expected to be worth $14.2 Billion USD in 2030.

“We’ve spent years developing the technological maturity, and now we’re fit for scaling to commercial vessels. As in any industry, the fastest-scaling company will dominate the market,” says Hasselskog.

The Candela P-8 and P-12 hardly make a ripple as they fly over the water on computer-controlled ... [+] hydrofoils

Other backers in the round include longtime investors EQT Ventures , Ocean Zero LLC , and Kan Dela AB. The new investment brings total funding since Candela’s inception to over $75 million.

“EQT Ventures has steadfastly backed Candela's vision to accelerate the shift towards fossil fuel-free lakes and oceans since 2021. The launch of Candela's P-12 vessels signifies a watershed moment in sustainable transport", says Lars Jörnow, Partner at EQT Ventures.

The only question is: when will we see a P-12 ferry here in the US?

Where to Go in Palm Beach to Get the Palm Royale Experience

Obsessed with the 1969 society portrayed in the show, from the colorful clothes to the exclusive settings? Here's where to visit in the famed resort destination that inspired it

Courtesy of The Palm Beaches PR

Palm Royale premieres on Apple TV+ on March 20 , and if you're anything like us, the first thing you're going to do after watching it is to plan a trip to the show's iconic setting: Palm Beach, Florida in 1969.

And though there's a little TV magic at play (the show was actually filmed in L.A., as Palm Beach is famously restrictive to film shoots), the extravagant and inimitable world of Palm Beach in the 1960s is immediately recognizable, thanks to the colorful, high-end fashion, the pinks and greens of the interiors and the exclusivity of the club scene that Kristen Wiig 's character longs to join.

Rick Rose, author of Palm Beach: The Essential Guide to America's Legendary Resort Town and a local historian who gives guided tours of the island's most noteworthy destinations, says that so much of what makes Palm Beach in the 1960s not only so recognizable, but also so desirable, still exists today. The top clubs (of which the Palm Royale is an amalgamation) are still the Everglades, Bath & Tennis and the Beach Club; there is still a tremendous amount of money on the island (59 billionaires and 10,000 millionaires, he says, at last estimation); and due to the area's "strong preservation community, it's like Paris, in that many aspects don't change at all."

Want a Palm Royale experience of your own? (Hopefully one that doesn't involve a catfight with Allison Janney ?) Here are the top sights to see, places to stay and locations to stake out if you want to catch a glimpse of a celebrity.

The Breakers

Perhaps one of the most instantly recognizable landmarks in all of Palm Beach is the Breakers , which can be seen in aerial shots in Palm Royale, per the Palm Beach Daily News .

It has a storied history (having been founded in 1896 by Gilded Age baron Henry Morrison Flagler) that remains as much of a destination for the elite as it was in its early days. The Breakers has hosted the weddings of celebrities including Joanna Garcia and Nick Swisher , Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello , and Alan Jackson's daughter Mattie , as well as star-studded charity events ( Martha Stewart recently attended one ).

So what makes the Breakers such a must-visit destination, more than a century after it was built? The magnificent architecture, countless opulent touches throughout (the enormous arrangements of fresh flowers in the lobby are legendary) and the many ways that guests can receive A-list treatment, even if they don't have their own Wikipedia page.

From VIP poolside bungalows "designed to be a beachfront extension of one’s guest room," according to Sara Flight, director of communications, to memorable custom experiences ( did you see Grant Troutt's proposal to Madison Prewett ?), any amenity you dream up can be available for guests — particularly if you stay in one of the Imperial Suites, where, Flight says, "the staff dedicated to these accommodations elevate hospitality to a level that one can only find at our resort."

And visitors hoping to get a taste of the property's rarefied ambiance without staying on-site can access it through one of their restaurants, the spa or the shopping corridors. "There are visitors who fly to Palm Beach solely to enjoy the crabcakes at the Seafood Bar," Flight shares.

The Colony Hotel

The Colony Hotel perfectly embodies that bold 1960s aesthetic so vividly captured in Palm Royale — while at the same time being oh-so-current thanks to its Instagram-friendly backdrops everywhere you look.

"It is hot, hot, hot there," Rose tells PEOPLE. "The folks who own that hotel are classical Palm Beach folks going back generations, but they have done a phenomenal job bringing back the whole vibe."

Among those who agree? Celebrities including Jenna Bush Hager and Savannah Guthrie (recently seen vacationing there), the Hilton family, and Gwyneth Paltrow, who recently helped launch a Goop-designed villa on the property .

You don't have to be a long-standing member of Palm Beach society to feel like one — just walking through the doors transports you to that ultra-glam '60s jet-set feeling.

"The Colony Hotel offers guests door to door service anywhere on Palm Beach Island in either the house Volvo, Seagrape Beach Buggy, or the new pink Beach Runner Defender," says owner and CEO Sarah Wetenhall. "The hotel can also snag bookings at Palm Beach’s chicest restaurants, make tennis or golf reservations, arrange surf lessons, and even source local camps for the littles. My favorite luxe amenity is a beach picnic, where our staff packs a pink Yeti cooler with snacks and beverages."

Wetenhall recommends those who want to see, be seen and capture some killer content book a table or grab a cocktail at Swifty's, "the Upper East Side boîte now located at The Colony Hotel, originally made famous by patrons such as Jackie Onassis and Michael Kors."

Worth Avenue

When you think about Palm Beach, Rose says, what instantly comes to mind is "Mediterranean revival architecture, fabulous fashion — because obviously Palm Beach has played a very important role in resort fashion — and certainly private clubs."

Worth Avenue, then, is the epicenter of all things that make Palm Beach, Palm Beach, from the distinctive buildings to the and icon-status stores that give the town its style (often imitated, never duplicated). The first Lilly Pulitzer store opened in one of the street's enchanting "vias," or back avenues off the main street, and it's anchored at either end by the landmark Everglades Club and the second-ever Saks Fifth Avenue.

"Worth Avenue is an undisputed highlight of Palm Beach," says Erika Constantine, VP of Marketing for Discover the Palm Beaches. "But few take time to fully explore the 'vias' that wind around and behind the avenue's high-fashion storefronts. You'll even find a tiny Starbucks and a gelato shop if you look hard enough, or the tiny tombstone for iconic monkey Johnnie Brown (a pet of Addison Mizner, considered one of the founders of Palm Beach) amidst the courtyard of Pizza Al Fresco."

For an ideal afternoon, Rose recommends lunch on Worth Avenue (if you can snag a table at perennially packed BiCE or Le Bilboquet, you might spot a celebrity), followed by a little shopping, Those looking to shop à la the stylish Palm Royale doyennes can pop into Lilly Pulitzer , Maus & Hoffman or Kassatly's ; keep an eye out for stars also indulging in some retail therapy (though, as he points out, you'll want to play it cool: "Famous folks like to go to Palm Beach because they're not harassed by a lot of people," he says).

Once you've got your goods, he suggests, rent a bike and tour the area to see "the Breakers Hotel, the Lake Trail and so many of those Gilded Age sites."

Courtesy of Alex Apatoff

The Flagler Museum

Perhaps the most famous Gilded Age site is the Flagler Museum, once the residence of the oil baron Henry Morrison Flagler, who built the first hotel in the state, in St. Augustine, and then heavily invested in railroad infrastructure and hotels to encourage other wealthy Gilded Age figures to winter in Florida.

Today, visitors can explore the mansion and the Breakers via a "House and Hotel tour" (with the option to take tea in the Railcar 91 tea room, an elegant atrium that contains Flagler's personal railcar in which he traveled from New York to Florida). It gives a sense of the incredible wealth that created Palm Beach, as well as how important the titans of industry and society were to founding the area's institutions and charitable efforts.

And that sense of "high society" never left — though, as Rose said, it changed significantly in the early twentieth century.

"Prior to World War I, the French and the Italian Rivieras were where all of the very wealthy and aristocratic people were going in the winter month. Palm Beach was a destination, but it was relatively unimportant," he says. "It didn't get that jet-set feel until World War I, when all of a sudden, all those aristocrats and the royals who were going to the South of France couldn't go because there was World War I ... So there was a real active intention to recreate that Riviera."

And, as he points out, many of the founding members of that society in the 1920s would still have "ruled the roost" in the 1960s setting of Palm Royale , at a time when "the season" was much shorter before the advent of air conditioning, and "wintering" somewhere was exclusively reserved for the rich and famous — hence, the cutthroat competition to join the clubs reflected in the show.

"Back then, you still had 'pedigree,' and things like that played an important role, which allows [the show] to make more fun of that aspect of Palm Beach Having that old American pedigree, like the Astors, and the Vanderbilts, and the Posts, when that was still so important," Rose says. "Palm Beach is still very, very exclusive, but it doesn't have the same [surname-based snobbishness] to poke fun at a little bit."

The A-List Experience

More than half a century after the society heyday of Palm Royale, Palm Beach is still the premier destination for the wealthy (both Tinsley Mortimer and the Peltz Beckhams recently got married there, and stars with residences include Jon Bon Jovi, Sylvester Stallone, Rod Stewart and Rory McIlroy), titans of industry looking to relax and stylish socialites. If you're looking to indulge in that lifestyle for a weekend, what should be on your itinerary?

First, book one of the splashy suites or villas at one of the area's high-end hotels, to get to enjoy that Gilded Age extravagance, with staff attending to your every whim both in your room and by the pool or beach.

Then "a ride on Lake Trail will give you a sneak peek into how the rich and famous live," suggests Ryvis Sierra, the senior public relations manager for Discover the Palm Beaches. You can also charter a boat through your hotel ("the Brazilian Court is now including a yacht excursion as part of the hotel stays for guests," she notes), or book a cute pastel Palm Yacht to see the sights from the water.

In the afternoon, stop at one of the Worth Avenue restaurants for lunch and shopping, then pop over to the Royal Poinciana Plaza for more cute shops and coffee at celeb hotspot Sant Ambroeus, suggests Rose. A dip in the pool followed by dinner at trendy Buccan will round out your A-list day perfectly, but if you're looking for a nightcap, Swifty's at The Colony Hotel or HMF at the Breakers will be pouring to perfection.

Apple TV+

Ready to book a trip? "With temperatures averaging around 78 degrees year-round, anytime is perfect to plan a getaway," Constantine notes, but "for the most celeb spotting, visit 'in season' from January through April."

One stay, and you might find yourself like Kristen Wiig's character in Palm Royale , trying to scale the wall to get to be part of the club forever.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht

Welcome to Below Deck Sailing Yacht, where the winds are stronger, the stakes are higher, and the job is tougher than ever. This season, the crew boards Parsifal III, a 180-foot long luxury sailing yacht. The existing crew includes Captain Glenn Shephard and yachtie couple Paget Berry and Ciara Duggan, who are joined for the charter season by Chef Adam Glick ("Below Deck Mediterranean"), Jenna MacGillivray, Byron Hissey, Madison Stalker, Georgia Grobler and Parker McCown. For the first time ever, Paget and Ciara find themselves working in the same department. And with the boat in total disarray, tensions between the old and new crew begin to simmer as they hustle to get ready for their first charter of the season.

The first charter of the season is underway, and Chief Stew Jenna is already feeling the pressure as she is tasked with planning an impromptu wedding for two drunk guests. First Mate Paget is trying to keep his cool and patience with his new deck team, including Ciara, his girlfriend of four years. Parker, an inexperienced deckhand, struggles to adjust to the posh world of yachting. Meanwhile, Captain Glenn attempts a risky maneuver while climbing the mast to fix a broken sail. During the first night out, two yachties have a steamy interaction that quickly makes their professional relationship personal.

After a wild, wine-fueled, night out, Jenna wades through a sea of regrets and braces for the awkward interactions that follow. A group of high-maintenance, vegan guests board Parsifal, and Adam struggles to live up to their meatless and milkless expectations. Georgia gets attitude from Chef Adam and seeks solace in her budding friendship with Madison and burgeoning flirtation with Paget. And Paget worries about how to be both Ciara's boss and her boyfriend as tensions between them escalate making them question if the charter season will get the best of them.

Stews brace and dishes break as the last breakfast of charter is served on full tilt. To make matter worse, the deck team gets into choppy waters during a rough docking. Parker feels the strain of being on charter and his immaturity begins to show. On their night out, Paget continues to bond with the crew, particularly Georgia. Jenna comes down on Georgia's laundry system and sends her away in tears. Then, Parsifal welcomes its youngest guest to date -- a newborn. And baby talk permeates the yacht as Adam and Jenna's relationship blossoms.

Parsifal sails into strong winds with a baby on board as Glenn stumbles into awkward conversation with a flirtatious primary. Adam and Jenna's relationship heats up which stokes the fires between the Jenna and her interior team. Madison gets frustrated when Jenna sends her to do a beach picnic setup with little notice, and Georgia piles laundry on Madison's workload. Ciara and Parker get in a spat about deck duties, and Paget tries to mediate while the guests wait nearby. But everything comes to a head when Ciara discovers that the boat is crashing into the dock!

Paget's patience runs out when he's left to pick up the slack after Parsifal crashes into the dock. A new charter of men from Long Island set sail in all of their champagne-sabering, chest-bumping glory, and the crew scrambles to meet their loud and incessant demands. Adam goes into beast mode while trying to cook for the bros, but he gets comfortable with Jenna, who wants more from their relationship. The guests cruise beach bars for chicks but end up taking a dive in the drink. Madison must decide how to handle a charter guest that crosses the line. And Parker and Madison facilitate an out-of-control yacht party.

Who Best Chronicles the Absurd Reality of Venezuelan Politics? A Giant Manic-Depressive Rodent

Diosdado cabello, nicolás maduro's right-hand man, is threatening retribution against the satirical website..

César Báez | 3.19.2024 3:25 PM

It's no surprise that the satirical news outlet El Chigüire Bipola r is funnier than The Onion and The Babylon Bee. It has a big advantage. El Chigüire Bipolar chronicles life in Venezuela, a nation destroyed by Hugo Chávez's socialist revolution, where even straight news often reads like satire. It's a country that, since Chávez's death in 2013, has been run by Nicolás Maduro, an oafish, thick-mustached dictator, with none of his predecessors' charm, charisma, or political intuition.

Maduro was caught on camera in 2018 dining and puffing cigars at a high-end Turkish steakhouse at a time when about two-thirds of Venezuelan children under the age of 5 were suffering from malnutrition.

He not only sounds like a cartoon character, he actually is one, starring in a government-produced series called Super Bigote (translation: "Giant Mustache"), in which his avatar wears an iron fist and blue cape, thwarting the evil plots carried out by American imperialists, such as an electromagnetic attack to wipe out Venezuela's electric grid. (Yes, this was the Maduro regime's official explanation for the crippling 2019 nationwide blackout.)

El Chigüire Bipolar derives its name from the capybara ("el chigüire" in Spanish), a large rodent endemic to South America and a delicacy. (Chávez enjoyed it.) The term bipolar means the same as it does in English: manic-depressive.

With the eye for absurdity that a large manic-depressive rodent might possess, El Chigüire Bipolar tackles topics such as Venezuela's epidemic of childhood hunger and malnutrition (" Government takes Discovery Kids off the air because there is food on Peppa Pig "); its crumbling infrastructure (" Amish family moves to Venezuela to disconnect from technology and services "); its incompetent public officials (" President Maduro appoints Rage Against The Machine's first album as economy minister "); a judicial system run by Maduro's lackeys (" Venezuelan Supreme Court declares Constitution unconstitutional "); and its rampant human rights violations (" Government receives deportees from Iceland denied political asylum to give them better grounds for seeking political asylum ").

El Chigüire Bipolar was founded by Juan Andrés Ravell, Elio Casale, and Oswaldo Graziani, who met in Caracas while sharing an office in the mid-aughts. Graziani and Ravell worked together on an animated series at Sony but were bristling under a lack of creative freedom. They teamed up with Casale to make Presidential Island , a cartoon series on YouTube that went viral in 2010, featuring the leaders of several Latin American countries partying together on a luxury yacht that gets shipwrecked, leaving them struggling to survive on a desert island.

They launched El Chigüire Bipolar on Blogspot , but it wasn't until they started posting their content to X (then known as Twitter) that the project spread like an "atomic bomb," Ravell recounted in an interview . Serving as a contributor for the site has since become an essential career stop for Venezuela's up-and-coming comedians.

Today there's no free press left in Venezuela. Chávez started shutting down newspapers and television stations in the mid-aughts. Eventually, criticizing the government meant bearing the risk of imprisonment and torture . News sites migrated abroad, including El Chigüire Bipolar— for the most part. The site's founders live in the United States, but the company that publishes the site is still based in Venezuela, along with many of its contributors.

So is El Chigüire Bipolar impervious to efforts by the Maduro regime to censor its content? That's currently being tested.

In November of last year, it published a story under the headline: " Diosdado congratulates Peruvian police for their performance against the Vinotinto. " Diosdado Cabello is a former military officer, the country's second most powerful person, and the architect of many of Venezuela's most repressive policies. He played a direct role in the destruction of the free press, including suing El Nacional , one of Venezuela's oldest and most respected newspapers, into oblivion . As a former Chávez lackey turned influential party official, Cabello enjoys immense privileges, including hosting his own weekly late-night show on state television, Con El Mazo Dando , which awkwardly translates to "striking with a mallet."

Cabello is also head of the Special Command for Peace, an umbrella organization that coordinates Venezuelan's paramilitary squads , better known as colectivos . These repressive squads are responsible for violence against dissidents and controlling communities through terror . Vinotinto is Venezuela's national soccer team, and during the World Cup qualifier in Peru, a player was allegedly hit by the Peruvian police with a baton when trying to approach his fans.

"It gives me such nostalgia," El Chigüire Bipolar jokingly quoted Cabello as saying in response to the incident. "I remember how I used to break Julio Borges' nose every week with one of the chairs in the [National Assembly] chamber." (In 2013, Borges, an opposition leader, was injured in a congressional brawl.)

Cabello, who has been sanctioned by the United States and the European Union for human rights violations and corruption, often rails against perceived enemies of the socialist revolution on his broadcast. The joke about him congratulating Peruvian police apparently struck a nerve. On an episode of his show that aired on November 22, 2023, Cabello threatened El Chigüire Bipolar with legal action and implied that the founders would find themselves in tears in front of a judge. "This isn't a joke," he said. "They did it with the intention of spreading hate."

The repercussions of Cabello's threat aren't clear, and when contacted by Reason , a spokesperson for El Chigüire Bipolar declined to comment. The site hasn't mentioned Cabello in any of its coverage since the offending headline was published. Though the original article is still live online, its associated image is gone.

There are plenty of news sites doing real journalism about Venezuela from the safety of other countries, including Armando.Info , VPITV , and Monitoreamos . But El Chigüire Bipolar best captures the spirit of what the country has become, because i t's nearly impossible to describe what's happened in Venezuela in straight prose.
