Tesco vouchers to get entry & jump queue too! Fantastic. Bus from city centre - easy
We went to Edinburgh over Easter weekend which also happened to be my husband's birthday and found that you could get entry for Royal Yatch Britannia using Tesco Clubcard vouchers. Saves a bit of money for other things to visit! You also get to jump the queue when you have vouchers as well. We arrived in time for opening, we caught a bus either number 22 or 35 from Princes Street near train station and tourist information centre - ask in there if unsure where to catch it from, then just go to the end of the route and get off at the shopping centre, go inside here and it is upstairs. This is quite a big shopping centre with plenty of shops and eating places so nice to spend time to wander round here too. The buses want exact change, it is £1.60 per adult single so £3.20 for 2 each way or if you think you will be using a bus more than once in a day there is a rover ticket. We were one of the first people to get on board and you are given safety talk and also audio guides and then allowed to get on. It is just fantastic to see around this majnificant Royal Yatch although to think it hasnt been that long since it has stopped being used it seems quite dated. We decided to have clotted cream scone & tea in the tea rooms at the top of the Yatch which was really lovely. We were quite lucky that it wasnt too busy when we arrived as we were first thing in morning although I think a lot of people must of gone round it a lot quicker than we did as we were one of the first to get on board yet the tea room had a lot of people in it. It was getting full by the time we left and it appeared that people in larger groups were having to queue to get a table when one became free. I am not sure is it possible to pre-book a table especially if there is a group of you. The price for the clotted cream and jam and scone & tea was reasonable and it was lovely to be sitting there drinking from china cup & saucer and have cream scone on the Royal Yatch Britannia, not something you get to do every day is it! We didnt use our serviettes and kept them as souveneirs as they are printed with Royal Yatch Britannia, I know they just paper serviettes but they were selling packs of these in the shop and they were quite expensive when we went through after leaving the Yatch. In fact there wasnt much small things that were cheap to buy in the shop. Spend the time and go round it thoroughly and listen to the audio guide so you know what you are looking at and hearing tales of things. It just brings it all to life.
Thank you for visiting Britannia. It certainly sounds like you enjoyed your tour of the five decks. You can indeed use Tesco Days Out Vouchers for admission. Simply bring them to our Reception on the second floor of Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre and exchange them for a boarding pass. Our Tea Room team will be delighted that you also enjoyed your tea and scones on board. For the information of others, unfortunately, tables cannot be pre-booked in our Tea Room but are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Many thanks for taking the time to leave such a detailed review.
Took Bus 35 to Marina Ocean Terminal and entrance to Britannia is though a shopping Mall - all levels accessible by stairs and lifts. Nice to see Bridge and rooms used by Royalty. Nice views and service in Royal Deck Cafe/Restaurant - busy 12-2 pm, go after 2 for more choice of tables - reasonable choice of food, sandwiches and drinks, etc. Well worth the visit
Thank you for visiting Britannia. It’s great to learn that you had such an excellent tour of the five decks. As you mention, we do tend to be quieter in the morning between 9:30 and 11am and then again after 2pm. Thank you for your review.
We arrived at the Ocean Terminal on a Majestic hop on, hop off open top bus from Edinburgh. From where we were dropped off it wasn’t immediately obvious the way to the yacht but eventually having walked through and up two floors in the nearby shopping Mall we came to the entrance to HMY Britannia. The entrance fee is very reasonable (especially as it covers a full year) and includes an excellent audio tour which allows you to move at your own pace. The tour through the yacht has been well thought out starting at the upper level and working your way down to the engine room level by external stairs, for the less able there are lifts. The tour gives a fascinating insight into royal and non-royal life aboard the yacht. It was busy the day we visited but the layout was such that there never seemed to be too many queues. The staff were very friendly and at one place on the sun deck a staff member was helping tourists take pictures.
Thank you for visiting Britannia. We are delighted to learn that you found the tour to be so fascinating and will pass on your kind words to all of our staff. As you mention, they are always delighted to take photographs for you or answer any questions that you might have. Many thanks for your review.
Part way round our tour of the Royal Yacht we came across the Royal Deck restaurant. When we arrived there were a few tables free but when we left the queue to be seated was out of the restaurant door, so allow yourself plenty of time. There is a variety of food on offer but we opted for soup, sandwiches and drinks. The staff were very friendly and helpful and our food arrived very quickly after ordering. The cost is no more than I would expect to pay in any other comparable attraction. Remember to save your serviette as a memento of the visit.
We enjoyed this attraction very much. There is an audio guide included in the ticket price which is very informative. The history of the yacht is very interesting and being able to walk around it was great fun. It makes a change from the palaces and castles. Definitely worth a visit.
We are very glad to hear that you enjoyed your time on board and found the tour to be so worthwhile. Many thanks for visiting and for your lovely review!
The Royal Yacht Britannia is well worth a visit. It's not far from Edinburgh city centre - a short £1.60 bus trip, or free parking for those travelling by car. The tour is very comprehensive and I love that you can stop and have a rest any time. It is wheelchair and pushchair friendly too. Very important for us as we had a bulky pram. We spent 3 hours on board, and that included a snack break. I loved seeing the Royal apartments, the function rooms, the crew areas, the mess rooms and the engine room. Even my husband, who was less than enthusiastic about going, thoroughly enjoyed it. Although he wishes more of the engine room and inner workings were viewable. The charity do an amazing job preserving a little piece of history. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and the obligatory gift shop is packed full of little souvenirs you can buy to remind you of your visit. I recommend this tour to anyone visiting Edinburgh, we loved it!
Thank you for visiting Britannia. It sounds like you really loved your tour of the five decks! As you mention, the tour is highly accessible for both pushchairs and wheelchairs. Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review and for your very kind recommendation!

Royal Yacht Britannia interiors
Many tourists wonder what’s inside the Royal Yacht before they book their tickets.
Some out of curiosity and some to know if a visit to Royal Yacht Britannia is worth it.
We list below some of the highlights of this Palace on water.
State Apartments
The State Apartments are the collection of rooms where the Royals lived or entertained their guests.
The Royal family relaxed in the State Drawing Room whenever they traveled together.
It also acted as a reception room for up to 250 guests.
The Verandah Deck was a private space for the Royals, where they could sunbathe or enjoy quoits or deck hockey.
This area of the ship also had a collapsible swimming pool for the Royal Family to splash around if they wanted.
The Sun Lounge was one of the Queen’s favorite rooms onboard HMY Brittania.
The beautiful teak-lined room was a designated family room and offered a lot of privacy from the rest of the ship.
This massive dining room onboard Britannia has played host to the world’s most influential people, such as Nelson Mandela, Sir Winston Churchill, Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, etc.
With its white paneled walls adorned with gifts received during State visits, this room represents ultimate luxury.
The Engine Room is a testament to British marine engineering skills because, until the ship got decommissioned in 1997, everything was working fine.
This room is full of gleaming brass, chrome, and white enamel with the ‘heavy stuff’ under the hood pumping 12,000 horsepower, which would help Britannia and her four-bladed propellers to a maximum of 22.5 knots.
Eight men operated the Engine Room, Boiler Room, and associated machinery rooms.
The 240 Officers and Yachtsmen on board Her Majesty’s Yacht Britannia sometimes had to change their uniforms up to six times a day.
This is why it was the only ship in the Royal Navy to have a laundry service permanently on board.
The laundry machines, dryers, and steam presses on the ship worked non-stop, and sometimes the temperature even went up to 48 degrees Celcius (118 degrees Fahrenheit)
The Admiral was responsible for Royal Yacht Britannia’s safe functioning and commanded the 19 officers and 220 Yachtsmen who operated the ship.
He worked, entertained, and often ate (he couldn’t join the other officers in their mess unless invited) in the Admiral’s Cabin. Image: Royalyachtbritannia.co.uk
The Bridge was HMY Britannia’s center of command and control on all her journeys.
From here, the officers reporting into the Admiral navigated, passed orders, recorded the logbooks, etc.
Back then, all Royal Navy ships had a Navy, Army, and Air Force Institute shop, known as the NAAFI.
The crew members and the officers would shop for their daily needs, such as toothpaste, shaving creams, magazines, etc. in this shop.

We got our tickets through exchanging Tesco club card vouchers. We had a great day and my daughter found it really interesting. We had tea and scones in the cafe which was nice, very busy so there was a wait for a table. A lovely family day out.
It’s wonderful to learn that you had a lovely family day out on board. Our Tea Room team will be very glad that you enjoyed your scones too. Many thanks for visiting and for taking the time to leave a review.
I really enjoyed this tour and at a reasonable price. Very efficient process through to getting your audio guide. You then went at your own pace around the yacht. Great insight into life on board for both the Royals and crew. Lovely photos displayed. Well worth a visit.
Thank you for visiting and for letting us know that you had such a lovely time on board. We are very glad that the tour gave you a great insight into life on board for the Royal Family.
A very interesting visit on board the Royal Yacht which was like stepping back in time with the boat having changed very little since the 1950`s. Great to view so many rooms including the ratings quarters. A real shame this boat is not sailing around the world any more however it was a privilege to have walked the corridors where so many members of the Royal family , presidents , prime ministers , royal family's and heads of states from other countries had been before.
It’s great to learn that you found the tour to be really interesting. As you mention, many of our visitors say that it seems as if The Queen has just stepped off board. Thank you for your review.
We had a great time on this tour. It was really interesting. Make sure to have lunch or tea in the cafe. It was unexpectedly nice!
We are delighted to learn that Britannia was your favourite attraction. Thank you for visiting and for taking the time to leave a review.
A truly interesting visit to "The Royal Yacht" sadly decommissioned for political reasons. Audio handsets are great for all details throughout the visit. The tea room was good value, but would have loved to have been able to purchase a a special bottle of beer to take home. Don't go past the fudge shop without trying and buying, wonderful quality.
Thank you for visiting Britannia. We are very pleased to learn that you enjoyed your tour and stop off in our Royal Deck Tea Room. For the information of others, our Bloodhound beer is available for purchase in our Gift shop located at the end of your tour. Many thanks for your review.
This tour surpassed expectations - we were very impressed. The audio sets meant you could explore the yacht at your own pace and the detail given was fascinating. The majority of the yacht was available to those on the tour and the well managed route meant you got to experience everything on show. Would highly recommend this to anybody visiting Edinburgh.
Thank you for visiting and for letting us know that you were really impressed by the tour. As you mention, the majority of the five decks are on show. Many thanks for your review and very kind recommendation.
