Stars and Stripes Catamaran

stars and stripes catamaran key west

We’re excited to announce that the Stars and Stripes Catamaran will soon be available for charter service at Key Lime Sailing Club!

This impressive catamaran was originally the sister boat of the Stars and Stripes H3, which was famously raced by Dennis Conner and won the America’s Cup in 1988. After being purchased by adventurer Steve Fosset, the Stars and Stripes S1 went on to become the fastest inshore and lake sailboat in the United States. It held records for numerous races, including the Chicago-Mackinac Race, Newport-Ensenada Race, and Swiftsure.

Under Fosset’s ownership, the Stars and Stripes S1 was used to set speed records around the world before being sold to Key Lime Sailing Club and Cottages in Key Largo in 2017. Since then, we’ve been hard at work refitting the catamaran for both racing and charter service.

Now, visitors to Key Largo will have the chance to experience the thrill of sailing on the same boat that once held so many records. Our day charters on the Stars and Stripes Catamaran offer a unique opportunity to explore the waters around Key Largo in style and comfort.

Whether you’re an experienced sailor or a novice, our crew will be there to guide you and ensure a safe and unforgettable experience. So come and join us on the Stars and Stripes Catamaran and discover the beauty of Key Largo from a whole new perspective!

Please call us at 305-587-3205 for more information.

Lost treasure – Photographer Don Kincaid dies

Lost treasure – Photographer Don Kincaid dies - A man wearing a suit and tie - Gentleman

Key West lost one of its treasured legends on Dec. 17, when diver, underwater photographer and treasure finder Don Kincaid lost his battle with cancer at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Miami. He was 73.

Word of his death spread quickly. Divers all over town, upon hearing the news, raised their drinks to the man who, in 1971, found the first glint of gold from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha, which sank off Key West in September 1622.

“Don was one of those extremely talented and larger-than-life personalities who is, was, an integral part of Key West,” said long-time friend and fellow treasure diver Jean “Golden Girl” Thornton. “He was one of my heroes.”

Kincaid’s adventures on the high seas started early. When he was 8, Kincaid and his mother, a Key West Conch who married a Navy man, spent 28 days crossing the Pacific — San Francisco to the Philippines — aboard a navy troop transport ship. His fascination with photography and shipwrecks started in the Philippines and continued during a stint in the U.S. Army, where Kincaid worked as a photographer and videographer. Finishing his service in 1971, Kincaid returned to Key West and got a job in a local camera shop — right around the time that treasure hunter Mel Fisher’s slide projector broke.

“I realized who he was and immediately asked him for a job,” Kincaid said in 2015. He then spent years, from 1971 until well after the July 20, 1985 discovery of the Atocha’s mother lode of treasure, diving and documenting the search and recovery of $400 million in gold, silver, emeralds and artifacts for both Fisher and National Geographic.

He had only been working for Fisher a few months when, in July 1971, he rolled off the side of a treasure-hunting boat and dove down to photograph an anchor thought to be from the Atocha.

“I saw these little shiny, metal links sticking out of the silt, and I started pulling,” Kincaid said a few years ago, remembering the greenish cast on the cold metal that made him think he’d found something bronze or copper.

When he surfaced moments later and looked again, there was nothing green about the chain he held in trembling hands. It was more than 8 feet long and it was all gold.

“Another crew member was up on the deck taking a whiz off the side of the boat, and when he saw what I had, he lost his balance and peed all over himself,” Kincaid recalled a few years back.

“Of course it would be another 14 years before we found the main pile (of treasure),” Kincaid said. “But yeah, that was the first gold found on the Atocha site.”

Kincaid continued to work with the salvage team and for National Geographic for many years. He later served on the board of directors and as a vice president of Fisher’s company. He also operated the Stars & Stripes charter catamaran and served on the board of the non-profit Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society, which operates the Mel Fisher Maritime History Museum.

The museum has inherited 30,000 of Kincaid’s images for its archives, executive director Melissa Kendrick said.

“He was a special part of Key West and of my life, and he will be greatly missed by both,” Thornton said.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Life is too short to say later. And winters suck.

With Brio

Stars & Stripes (in Key West + Marathon, Florida)

A long time ago, Jon and I sat down and talked about where we might want to sail with Brio.

Across the Pacific? Too big of an ocean.

Up to Vancouver? Too many windward miles.

Around and around in Mexico? Wouldn’t satisfy the gypsy soul.

Now that was an interesting proposition.

So last year we boldly set out to get to Panama. That didn’t quite go as planned . 7 weeks in the San Carlos work yard (happy honeymoon to us!), 4 weeks in Mazatlan (engine mounts!), 6 weeks in La Cruz (rudder repair!), and *bam* — the season was over and in Panama we were not!

That left Brio in Mexico, and the plan to sail to Maine on the back-burner… As we approached this year’s season, we decided we’d be a little more cautious.

“We’ll go as far as we can, and then we’ll leave the boat”.

Privately, we whispered about cruising the USA East Coast, having Brio ‘at home’ with us in Maine for a year or two of solid boat-love (aka: maintenance), not having to balance paying for a boat to be stored in a tropical paradise miles away from us while we worked and fulfilled greencard requirements, and the possibility that maybe — just maybe — we could make it to Maine this year?

We almost gave up on that dream in Bocas del Toro.

But a few favourable passage later, and we’re suddenly in the Florida Keys. The passage we stressed about for months and months (from Isla Mujeres to Key West, Florida) is behind us, the stars & stripes are flying above us, and suddenly the future is stretched out ahead of us, looking promising and possible in a way I really wasn’t sure she would this year…

Brio is in the USA

On a different note, sailing in / across / around the Gulf Stream is INSANE. I knew the winds were going to be against us and that our best bet would probably be a giant motor trip in calm winds… what I didn’t realize (until we were in the throes of hunting down a weather window) was how much the currents affect this area. Just have a quick peek at passageweather’s Gulf Stream forecast and you’ll see what I mean…

Gulf Stream - Isla Mujeres to Key West Florida

The key is to ride that yellow strip up from Isla Mujeres just long enough that you can get across and into the east-flowing current (and not get suckered into the giant whirling-donut that thinks Galveston, Texas would be a better destination than Key West, Florida 🙂 ). And — thank our lucky stars — that’s exactly what we did! Brio made 9-10 knots all the way up to 23 degrees north, then did a solid 6.5-7.5 knots right in through the Key West channel.

The motion was crummy — 10 knots of wind over 3 knots of current = lumpy bumpyness, and I think the fanciest meal we prepared was cereal — but the speed was well worth it. We covered 369 miles in 57 hours. That is an UNHEARD of average for us, and (bonus!) meant we were actually only out for 2 nights. Happy faces 🙂

Jon & Leah in Key West, Florida

So in a nutshell: It is AMAZING to be here, and I’m seriously super-duper excited for this next stretch of sailing.

Oh, and? The Florida Keys are beautiful. Neither of us had been here before, so we’re busy soaking it all in (the beaches! the perfect temperature! the English-speaking officials! the wandering chickens! the cruiser-friendly live-aboard amenities! the peanut butter!).

The famous chickens of Key West

Yup, life is good 🙂

So excited for you guys!!!! Very proud of you as well for hanging in there! Cant wait to see you when you get back to Maine!!!

Thanks Tammy!!! We can’t wait for summer BBQs & catching up with you guys either!!!

Glad you had a fast trip! I lived in the Keys for 3 1/2 years, they’re great. Just left there actually to sail around the Bahamas a bit 🙂

Thanks Bill! I can definitely see why people live here — beautiful weather, beautiful anchorages, boat-friendly harbours — what more could you ask for!? When will you come back from the Bahamas?

Stars and Stripes – Restoring America’s Yacht Racing Legacy

Recognizing a boat’s true value is a real talent and we feel fortunate to have such talent in our Yacht Broker Ian Martin . Ian has quite the reputation in the sailing world. He is a South African native and is well known for his sailing and racing adventures from Cape Town to the Caribbean and beyond. He competed in the Whitbread around the World Race (now known as the Ocean Race) on a monohull and still competes in Foxy’s Cat fight in the BVI. Ian and his brother, John, raced in a double-handed transatlantic race and set a new record for the elapsed time to cross the Atlantic which was registered in the Guinness Book of Records.

The list truly goes on and now we can add a very iconic accomplishment; helping to preserve an important piece of race history, the 1987 Stars and Stripes 12 meter Americas Cup Boat. This famous vessel was the first US boat that won the America’s Cup, which is considered the pinnacle of yachting.

America’s Cup was first contested in 1851 when a syndicate of businessmen from New York sailed the first schooner America across the Atlantic Ocean for the World’s Fair in England. The schooner won a race around the Isle of Wight against a fleet of British yachts to claim the £100 Cup.

From there, the United States embarked on what would become the longest winning streak in the history of sport. America successfully defended the trophy 24 times from 1870 through 1980—until 1983, when Australia II became the first successful challenger to lift the trophy from the Americans. Dennis Connor and his crew reclaimed the trophy for America again in 1987 with “Stars & Stripes”, and is considered to be one of the greatest comeback stories in the history of sports. It was one of the most exciting races in history and Stars & Stripes became the most well known yacht in the world.

Stars & Stripes then was sold to a company in Sint Maarten where she delighted cruise ship passengers on daily races. In 2017, during hurricane Irma, she sank and was badly damaged. In 2021 Ian Martin decided to list her for sale, hoping to find a buyer who would appreciate her glorious history and restore her.

America’s Cup fun facts:

  • It is the oldest trophy in international sport, predating the modern Olympic Games by 45 years.
  • The winner gets to decide the race locations
  • The most successful racer is New Zealander Russell Coutts
  • It costs $2 million per team to take part
  • The famous silver trophy is actually a claret jug and was made by London silvermaker Garrard in 1848
  • Sir Thomas Lipton challenged for the trophy five times between 1899 and 1930 but was only awarded a specially designed cup for “the best of all losers”

To the ordinary eye, this boat would not be an appealing purchase, but Ian knew that this boat was the boat that started the most famous America’s Cup Race and it needed to be restored. He brokered a deal with the New York Yacht Club where they would restore the vessel back to its original glory. The Yacht Club is now on a mission to raise money to restore America’s most famous yacht so that she can begin retelling her story and inspire future generations.

Please donate to this very worthy cause!

Philosophy Revolution vs Evolution

Our philosophy is simple: We believe in creating groundbreaking designs that combine speed, safety, strength and elegance.

We design for lifestyle with function and develop creative, luxurious, energy-efficient, fun and fast multihulls. We offer personalized services and we never impose our aesthetic on your project. We do whatever it takes to ensure they get built to your exacting specifications.

History An Indisputable Track Record

With the right mix of leading-edge technology and a slightly irreverent attitude, Gino Morrelli and Pete Melvin have spent nearly three decades creating a cult of personality. Together, we’ve developed cool stuff, often captured in dramatic photos of hair-raising speed and foam-flying exhilaration.

Among M&M projects, you’ll find:

NACRA 17 cat that was raced in the 2016 Rio Olympics, 62- and 90-foot Gunboat designs, and  PlayStation , the award-winning and record-setting 125-foot cat that was campaigned by adventurer Steve Fossett.

Other sleek speedsters include the Rapido 60 trimaran that can reach speeds in the mid-20-knot range, the TF 10 fully flying carbon 10-meter folding trimaran, and the SuperFoiler, a blazing-fast 28-footer bound for Grand Prix racing in Australia with downwind speeds in excess of 40 knots.

We’ve worked with numerous commercial vessel builders developing ferries and tenders and we’ve made a mark in the world of production multihulls in private and charter use including several designs for South African builder, Roberts & Caine and carbon-uber cats HH Catamarans. We even introduced Hobie to rotomolding and that led to the development of the Hobie Wave, one of the best selling catamarans on the market.

We regularly help rejuvenate older designs. Multiple America’s Cup teams, BMW ORACLE Racing, and multihull builder, Corsair, are among those whom we’ve helped to redesign and reconfigure existing boats.

We don’t just stick to multihull design though. We’ve been called upon as expert witnesses, we’ve lived on the edge of the newest developments in carbon infusion building techniques, we’ve investigated electric and hybrid power solutions, and we’ve even designed a carbon fiber racing Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP). It’s all in a day’s work.

Depth & Breadth of Experience

Today, M&M is a complete team of highly qualified engineers, designers and naval architects all of whom lend a fresh perspective and significant energy to each and every project.

Gino Morrelli

Gino Morrelli, Designer / Partner

Email: [email protected]

Gino started out working on race cars and boats in his family’s Southern California back yard as a teenager. He built his first boat with his dad and brother, a 33-foot Crowther trimaran in high school. Soon after he started his first company, Climax Catamarans, designing and building 18-square meter cats.

He has been entrenched in onshore and offshore race-boat construction efforts since the early 80’s, designing and managing the construction of a French 60′ ocean racing catamaran, multiple Formula 40’s, the 1988 Stars & Stripes America’s Cup catamaran, Bol D’or racers, Little America’s Cup C-Class cats and many racing beach catamarans. Gino raced extensively on Stars and Stripes ’88 with Dennis Connor and Steve Fossett’s Morrelli & Melvin designed 125ft cat PlayStation, setting Atlantic W-E, 24 hour, Round Britain/Ireland records, and many more.

Today Gino manages the Product Development and Yacht Sales side of our business where he helps bridge the gap between design and engineering and our production clients or custom builders. His many years of experience in racing, design, as well as on the shop floor help us design boats that are beautiful, perform well, and are practical and economical to construct.

Pete Melvin

Pete Melvin, Designer / Engineer / Partner

Email: [email protected]

Pete Melvin has been creating innovative vehicles since his youth.  Not discouraged when the boat he built as a 6-year old did not float, he rebounded and built a fast motorized skateboard by the time he was 10. Pete and his father designed and built several Optimist dinghies and then formed a company to build them. They used Nomex honeycomb and carbon fiber long before these materials gained acceptance in the marine industry. Pete has always designed, built, rigged, and prepared his own race boats, creating many innovations along the way and gaining valuable hands-on experience. He recently designed and built an innovative electric motorcycle that goes 50 miles on a single charge at up to 60 mph. His motorcycle is a test bed for lithium battery and electric propulsion systems that are increasingly finding their way onto M&M’s commercial, military, and pleasure boat designs.

Pete Melvin manages our design office and participates in all levels of the design process. He is a graduate of Boston University with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. Pete designed aircraft at McDonnell Douglas for five years before forming Morrelli & Melvin in 1992. Pete has been a champion sailboat racer since his youth and has won over 25 National Championships in a wide variety of dinghies, keelboats, and multihulls of all sizes. He has won three World Championships, including the 1997 and 2005 A Class Catamaran World Championships. He was the US Tornado skipper at the Olympics in 1988. Pete set some speed records as a crew aboard the Morrelli & Melvin designed PlayStation.  He has been a crew member on five WSSRC sanctioned World Records.  Small or large, catamaran or trimaran, Pete is at home making them perform to their VPP’s.

Erik Berzins

Erik Berzins / Yacht Designer

Email:  [email protected]

Canadian import Erik Berzins has been living, sailing and designing sailboats in California since 2005. After completing a degree in Naval Architecture and Mechanical Engineering from the University of British Columbia, Erik knew a lot about tug boats and cruise ships, but was much more interested in pursuing his passion for sailing. Erik teamed up with local Long Beach yacht designer, Alan Andrews to design and race performance monohulls. Jumping on opportunities to race to Hawaii, Tahiti and Cabo, Erik is now a go-to bowman in the California sailing scene.

In 2010, Erik decided to chop off the lead and take the leap to high performance multihull design at Morrelli and Melvin. Erik is in charge of project management, structural design, velocity prediction, sailing ergonomics and company morale. When not at work, Erik continues to enjoy match racing, offshore sailing, racquetball and enjoying fish burritos.

Mark Peters

Mark Peters / Naval Architect

Email:  [email protected]

Mark was born in New Jersey, but grew up hanging around the boats/docks in Kinsale, Ireland. After high school he attend a 2 year apprenticeship in traditional boat building in Rockland, Maine. This lead to job building the Schooner Virginia in Norfollk, Virginia. From there he ventured south taking a job in the Caribbean building and refurbishing yacht interiors. During his time in Caribbean he picked up a love of racing, which later turned into a job as a delivery boat skipper/race crew for a number of Caribbean racing teams. After 2 years of racing, Mark returned to university to complete a degree in Naval Architecture from the Marine Institute of Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Upon completion, he returned to boat building to help build Puma’s “Mar Mostro” at NEB for the Volvo Ocean Race. After the launch, he moved to Seattle and took a job as a Naval Architect designing carbon fiber patrol boats. When the opening arose to join the MM team, Mark jumped at the opportunity.

Mark splits his time between the California office and working abroad on various projects around the world. When he is in California, he tries to spend most of his time racing around SoCal or relaxing in Catalina.

Ferdinand Van West

Ferdinand van West / Naval Architect

Email:  [email protected]

As yacht designer and top multihull sailor, Morrelli & Melvin feels like home for the Dutchman Ferdinand. In 2012 he completed his Master of Science in Maritime Engineering, Yacht and small craft at the University of Southampton. Now he is combining his professional and sportive passions in life. Before Ferdinand got to California he worked for long-time MM client Nacra where he was working on the development of Nacra’s latest designs, namely the Olympic Nacra 17 and the Full foiling Nacra F20c FCS, where he also broaden his boat-building skills by building several prototypes.

Ferdinand is also active as a professional sailor, having sailed multiple disciplines from dinghies, 29er and the Olympic 49er, to catamarans, F18 and extreme 40 to the big boats on offshore’s and the Super Maxis, winning various National and World Championship events in all of these classes.

Andrew Bloxom

Andrew Bloxom / Design Engineer

Email:   [email protected]

Andrew was born in Fairfax, VA and his father was a Navy Captain and his mother’s family built ships in Pascagoula, MS. He learned the joys of gliding across the water’s surface through living in Newport, RI, Mayport, FL, and trips to his grandparent’s homes on the Rappahannock River and the Gulf Coast.

Andrew attended the Chesapeake Sailing Yacht Symposium in 2007 and quickly became fascinated by the numerical simulation of the aero/hydrodynamics of boats. After returning to school and discovering the Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equations wouldn’t be covered in the curriculum, he initiated an undergraduate study with Professor Wayne Neu. In 2014 he completed his PhD focused on the fluid-structure interaction of SES bow seals, and packed up the wagon to head out west.

He feels very fortunate to be applying his skills in Computational Fluid Dynamics and Finite Element Analysis to multihull and composite design at M&M. His other interests include spending time exploring California with his wife Lyndsey, rockhounding/lapidary arts, and making and flying recreational kites.

Yi Chin

Yi Chin / CAD Design & Styling

Email: [email protected]

Eric is the M&M style guru who helps new designs come to life so owners can visualize their boat long before it becomes a reality.

Since graduating from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, Eric has worked with major brand names, modeling and styling products to enhance their visual appeal and functionality.  He turns basic 2D sketches and 3D block models into 3D digital visuals that can be used for stylized client renderings.  The level of detail Eric creates allows clients to see minute features of their future boat for an almost-aboard type of experience. Prior to coming to M&M, Eric worked with automotive giants like Honda Powersports, Yamaha, Mitsubishi and Hyundai.

In his spare time, Eric designs 1:5 scale RC cars and messes with car parts to enhance automotive performance.

Stars and Stripes Catamaran Sail and Snorkel

Our first stop on the Southern Caribbean cruise out of San Juan was St. Thomas, in the US Virgin Islands. Our excursion was a Catamaran Sail and Snorkel at "Shipwreck Cove". Of course, the weather in January was in the 80's, a little warmer than Omaha, NE (high of 11 the day we left), so it felt great. It turns out the "Stars and Stripes" was a fine vessel, just not the flagship sailing craft we might have expected. The ship was commanded by Capt. Val (a young woman from Minnesota), the first mate was Jordan (a young woman from Oklahoma), and the able seaman (known as "eye candy" on board) was Darren, the only native of St. Thomas. The crew was friendly, humorous, and played some great music while we sailed to our snorkeling spot. The fish were not super plentiful, but there were many colorful varieties to observe, including a couple of sea turtles. The snorkeling lasted about an hour and was quite lazy and easy on the body. The return trip consisted of louder music, supplemented by Rum Punch and other drinks. We all had a good time, and the crew were great !! I think all of the guests had a great time !! The total time for this adventure was about 3 1/2 hours. I would definitely recommend this excursion, and I would do it again if I get back to St. Thomas.

Surprised my husband for his birthday and he loved it! We are both from St. Thomas and finding things to do on the island can be challenging at times...Flyboarding was such an amazing, fun experience. Rigo was awesome and very informative! My husband had such a great time he wants to do it again! Def a MUST if you live on island or even visiting!!

Really glad we decided to do this!! It was so great!! I was worried I wouldnt be able to do it. Im not the most athletic person but they were such great teachers I was able to get up just trying a few times. it was a great activity for everyone in our group. The more athletic people were able to do some cool stuff by the end of the day while I had a blast just experiencing flying above the water!! It is a must do!

Flyboarding is an amazing experience that everyone should try. I met with Rigo and he went over the basics of flyboarding... There are essentially five working parts to the Flyboard: THE FLYER The person strapped into the Flyboard directs and steers the board. THE BOARD The Board is the device that allows the Flyer to take over the jets. THE HOSE The Hose connects the Flyboard to the jet ski. THE JET SKI The Jet Ski provides the power to propel the Flyboard. THE OPERATOR The Operator / Instructor safely controls the power, speed, and height. Riding the Flyboard was easily one of the coolest things that I have ever done. Being able to fly and float over the water is truly amazing. It is like something straight out of Ironman and was a surreal experience. I enjoyed the ease in which I was able to get up, but more importantly, the opportunity to push the envelop and try new tricks will keep you coming back.

This may be the most fun thing I have ever done in my life. I felt like Ironman above the sea, flying all around. It took me about 10 minutes to get my feet under me and understand how to fly out of the water and hover. Another 10 to learn how to keep my balance and dive into the water. I felt safe the whole time and the instructor was great, they were in total control of me and the machine that pushed me up in the sky. My wife was with me and she loved it too. We did an hour and it was totally worth it as it was my favorite memory of our entire trip!

Only reason St. Thomas fly boarding only got 5 stars is there was no option for more stars. Had a group of 5 ranging from 15 to 46 years old. Randy got all of the group flying within a few minutes and taught us the dolphin dive, back dive and other cool tricks. This was by far the best activity the family did on the cruise. Very accommodating staff and easy to get to from cruise ports.

Great place to stay!

Great location and amazing accommodation. Would definitely stay here again. Very spacious with lots of room for guests.

Beautiful and Close

The house was exactly what we were hoping for. We had 4 couples staying together and there was plenty of room for all of us. The house and property was very clean and the outdoor area is beautiful. Very close to downtown. Would definitely stay here again.

Perfect location!

This home is located on a quiet street with a private lounge pool. The perfect oasis away from the hustle and bustle of Duval, yet a short walk to everything! We would highly recommend this comfortable and convenient spot. My only complaint is the late check in and early check out. The management team worked with us well, however.

Perfect Location!

Super cute house with 3 apartments. We had the 2nd and 3rd floors. It was great to have so much room for our family. The kids loved the pool. Very pleasant experience!

Manager's Response

Thank you for your review Megan, we are so glad the property met your needs while staying with us. We hope you'll stay with us again next time you visit Key West.

Stars and Stripes

Very nice place with an even better location. Very comfortable place and so close to everything you could ever want out of Key West.

Thank you for your wonderful review Matthew. We enjoyed hosting you and hope to see you back in Key West again soon!

We had a great time at Stripes, perfect location, very clean, spacious and great communication regarding every aspect of our stay.

Thank you for this great review Christina! We are thrilled you enjoyed the property and hope to host you again in the future!

A lovely family trip to the Keys staying in Stripes

We chose Stripes, the 2nd and 3rd floors of the house in a great location for my husbands birthday. Adult kids came and the space was flexible and convenient. Its a lovely space, esp the 2nd floor balcony and the pool. The ice maker didn't work, and there were electrical light issues in one of the bedrooms.

Thank you for this great review Margaret, we are glad you enjoyed your stay at Stripes! Free parking is scarce in Old Town Key West but we do have non residential on street free parking. Next time you visit, please let your property manager know if you're having trouble finding a spot, they'll be happy to assist you with it.

Family Get Away

Eight of us stayed for a week between Christmas and New Year. We were all 20 and over. We had the second and third floor. The house was in a great location, super clean and comfortable. Having our own pool was an added bonus. Also lives all the porches. The only"complaint" was there were no closets, and we're looking for a few more mirrors. But regardless,we would gladly stay again. Everyone involved was helpful and it was a very easy check in and out.

Thank you for your review Mary, we are thrilled you enjoyed your stay and hope to welcome you again next time you visit the island!

Couples Get Away!

This property is amazing. It is in the perfect location in Key West it gives the right amount of local flair and Duval Street. The pool is clean and beautiful. The property is also a stones throw from the marina where the charter boats are. I will definitely stay here again.

Thank you for your review Miles, it was a pleasure hosting you, we hopt to welcome you again in the future!

Awesome property and location is perfect walking distance to duval and the harbor. The pool was very nice and a highlight of our trip. We can’t wait to stay there in the future. Shana is a great property manager.

Patrick thank you for this wonderful review, we are so happy you enjoyed your stay and look forward to welcoming you again!

Great Location and Comfortable Home

The main living area is compact, but it’s much more accommodating then it appears in the pictures. Another note, I was surprised to see the washer and dryer outside. That may have deterred me originally, but it actually posed no issues. The layout worked out well. Very nice place and incredible location.

Thank you for your wonderful review. We hope to see you again soon!

Return to Key West

Excellent location, very comfortable accommodations, and great amenities. Excellent and timely communications. The only drawback was parking for one vehicle. Given the price there should be some accommodation for an additional parking beyond one space.

Thank you Jeff for taking the time to review our property. We are so glad you enjoyed you stay with us. Unfortunately parking often comes up as an issue on this small island. We hope you'll stay with us again next time you visit, we have other homes that offer more parking options and would love to help you book one.

Very nice, expensive but worth it. A fun place to be.

Thank you for your review, we are so glad you had fun while staying with us, please come visit again soon!

Great Place- Great Location

Favorite place we’ve have stayed in Key West. Great location, the place was big, clean, and had everything we needed. Property manager was very nice and helpful as well. Can’t wait to stay again next year!

Thank you for your review. We enjoyed hosting you and hope to see you again soon!

Quiet escape from the Key West party scene

Perfect location for a group stay, stumbling distance to Duval.

We enjoyed our stay at Stripes at the end of March 2020. We found the property easily, and the entry instructions were good. Took a little jiggling to get the front door key to work (guessing it's due to the multiple copies), and the property itself was neat, with plenty of towels for all the guests. The pool area was well maintained too, and we typically spent a few hours there each morning as people surfaced - which was a welcome retreat from the Duval shenanigans. All in all, great location, communication from the property management was spot on, from the pre-check in to check in, and during our stay.

Thank you for your review. We are so thrilled you had a great time and hope to see you again soon!

Great location & house

I would stay here again. It was a great location that was close to everything but still very quiet. The house was clean and the host was easy to work with.

Thank you for your recent review. We enjoyed hosting you and hope to see you back soon!

Great space in a great location

Stripes was perfect! A group of friends and I stayed in this amazing space in Old Town Key West. It’s location is conveniently located, close to any Kew West attractions. The pool was perfect in the Florida heat and the entire unit was clean, comfortable and has all you need in a short rental. Much recommended.

Thank you for the 5 star review. We love to hear how much you enjoyed this home and hope to host you again soon.

Amazing home

The home was so wonderful. Beautifully decorated with amazing attention to detail. Loved it and will definitely rebook. Location was perfect.

Dear Eileen,

Thank you for your wonderful review. We loved hosting you and hope to see you back.

Key west super bowl Vacation

Prime location for Duvall street.....

Dear Jennifer,

Thank you for your wonderful review. We are so thrilled to hear how much you enjoyed this home and hope to see you back again soon.

A great rental for Key West

We were a group of 4 adults and two children. The rental was perfect as we had some separation but were still together. Everything was nicely furnished and all the beds were clean and comfortable. The swimming pool was a bonus. We used it a lot. It was nice to have a washer and dryer available too. The location was spot on as we were close to Duval Street and the marina area which is really making some nice changes and upgrades. It was nice that every room had a tv in it. The only downside is that there is only one parking space for the whole house. We were there at a slower time so we were able to find street parking. We will definitely rent again at this property.

Thank you for your wonderful review on Stripes! We are so thrilled to hear how much you enjoyed this incredible rental in the downtown area. If the other part of the this home is rented during your time here, the parking spot does become a shared parking spot on a first come first serve basis. Parking is rare downtown so it is a big perk to the home although not needed in this location. We enjoyed hosting you and hope you come back soon!

Great location!

Location was super close to Duval and nearby restaurants and shops. The place was clean and air conditioner in every room was very nice. Plenty of towels for pool and bath as well.

Dear Amber,

Thank you for your incredible review on Stripes. We are so thrilled to hear how much you enjoyed this incredible home and it's location to downtown. We enjoyed hosting you and hope to see you back!

Beautiful. Place to Stay and great Location

Dear Loretta,

Good location

We had a great time. We had 8 adults and were confortable in the 2nd and 3rd floor. Great location...lots of food and close to Duval street.

Dear Jared, Thank you for your 5 star review on Stripes. We are thrilled to hear that you and your party were comfortable in this amazing Key West home and that the location was perfect. We appreciate your wonderful feedback and look forward to seeing you again in Paradise!

Best Regards, Wendy Zintsmaster and Team

Very clean and accommodated 8 adults

The house was clean and has enough sleeping space for 8 adults. Reasonable priced and pretty close to Duval street. (Double thumbs up)

Could not have had better!

This home is exquisite. Lots of room with beautiful design and decor. Pool so refresing after days activities. Location couldn't be better, two blocks from Duval Street but in a quite neighborhood setting. Can't wait to come back!! Also, all beds extremely comfortable. A class act!

Ideal home in the ideal vacation destination! A perfect home for all!

This beautiful property was impeccably kept and centrally located in the heart of old town Key West. Close to all tourist destinations and yet far enough away to relax in the private compound with resort style amenities, including a pool and laundry facility. The staff were professional and provided exceptional service with complete attention to detail. I highly recommend this property and I look forward to renting again! You wont regret it!

The stars and stripes in Moscow

The stars and stripes in Moscow William C. White June 1933

WILLIAM C. WHITE

In a time of trade decline the proposal to establish relations and commerce with Russia gathers followers

NOTE: For the past fifteen years the administration at Washington, whether Democratic or Republican, has refused recognition to Soviet Russia, presumably for valid reasons. Rumors that recognition is now to he granted are probably based on information known at Washington, but thus far not made public.

There are some interesting items in the file of official documents in the State Department which is marked "Soviet Russia.

In March, 1918, when the Brest-Litovsk treaty was signed, President Wilson sent a cable to the Congress of Soviets in Moscow. "May 1 not express the sincere sympathy which the people of the United States feel for the Russian people at this moment. ... I beg to assure the people of Russia that the United States will avail itself of every opportunity to secure for Russia, once more, complete sovereignty and independence in her own affairs. The whole heart of the people of the United States is with the people of Russia."

There is another document, the Colby note of 1919, reading in part. "It is not possible for the Government of the United States to recognize the present rulers of Russia ... a regime based on the negation of every principle of honor and good faith."

The most recent official document, except for the notice that Russia had joined the Kellogg pact, is the statement of Mr. Hughes, then Secretary of State, dated December, 1923. "The Government can enter into no negotiations until these efforts (continued propaganda to overthrow the institutions of this country) are abandoned."

The Roosevelt administration may add some more documents to tin; file, and different in tone.

—THE EDITORS

THE UNRECOGNIZED COLOSSUS.—For fifteen years the United States has had no diplomatic relations with the Soviet government although, as a New York court decision demurely puts it. "it is a matter of common knowledge that such a government exists." It is rumoured, however, that the Roosevelt administration will "cut the Russians in" on the New Deal and enter into political relations with a government whose survival, for a decade and a half, testifies to its stability if not to its attractiveness.

Thus, an American embassy will perhaps soon settle down in Moscow while the Red Flag will fly in Washington, over the Soviet diplomats. The problems of unpaid debts, expropriated property and Communist propaganda, may be discussed at meetings between American and Soviet diplomats, where something can perhaps be done about them, rather than at meetings of the Foreign Policy Association. at conventions of the D.A.R., and at the close of lectures on "My Three Weeks in Ruddy Russia."

Before relations between Soviet Russia and the United States become normal a vast amount of negotiating and dickering will have to occur. This is not the first time that relations between the two nations have been on a curious basis. As American diplomats, with their secretaries, experts, stenographers, clerks and accountants, enter the Soviet Union, they might, perhaps, think back to other diplomatic missions to Russia. . . .

AMERICANS BEGGING OF RUSSIA.—The first American diplomatic mission to Russia set out in 1781. It had two members, Francis Dana, a middle-aged New Englander, and his secretary and interpreter. The secretary was John Quincy Adams, fourteen years old. An adult interpreter had lost his nerve at the thought of Russian winters, and Dana had to take the fourteen-year-old boy, with his French grammar and dictionary, the only American in Paris who knew a foreign language and who could, at the same time, be trusted.

This American diplomatic delegation, ambassador and secretary, both of them revolutionaries in the eyes of Europe, climbed out of the mail coach in Riga in July, 1781, and immediately called for a new pair of horses. Their mission demanded speed. "No horses on Saturdays or Sundays," said the innkeeper. "You'll have to wait until Monday." Their Russian experiences had begun. Dana had credentials to Catherine the Great but he travelled incognito, uncertain that she would receive him. His journey had one purpose, to secure the recognition of America by Russia! Such recognition would prove valuable in our Revolutionary War then being waged against Great Britain.

The "ambassador" and his secretary settled down in St. Petersburg to wait—just as an unofficial Soviet "ambassador," Mr. Skvirsky, has been waiting these long years in Washington. Young Adams bought himself a Russian grammar and started to learn something about the aspects of the Russian verb. Dana tried to show to the Tsarina's ministers, with the fourteen-year-old boy translating in rather blunt French, the advantages of recognition. "Let Catherine send an ambassador to the United States, acknowledging their sovereignty. This would be the highest day of all her glory. This would give peace to mankind."

(Only a little less florid have been some of the arguments set forth by the pro-Soviet groups in speaking of American recognition of Soviet Russia today.)

For two years Dana and young Adams waited, but Catherine was too busy with other things. She would not receive him. The opportunity of being "Godmother of the new American State" did not interest her; she evidently thought maternity of any sort a bother. A commercial treaty with America? Certainly, it could be arranged, her minister told Dana, if he would pay each of her favorites a substantial pourboire. Dana sent news of this fact home and the Fathers of our Country were shocked by the immorality implied, but not shocked into paying out the money. So Dana departed, with one final slap, "The United States, fired with the prospect of their future glory, would blush to think that history might represent them as humble supplicants for any nation's favor."

(Two years ago, Stalin, discussing American recognition of Russia with Walter Duranty, of the New York Times, said, "America knows where we stand from Litvinov's declarations. We have done what we could, but we won't hang on America's neck.")

Twenty-six years were to pass after Dana's departure before Russia recognized the United States. In 1809 the same Adams, then middle-aged, went to Russia with a party of eight, certain, this time, of being received. He arrived at St. Petersburg and "engaged an apartment of five indifferent chambers but said to be the best in the city." He commented on the strangeness of double windows, of Dutch stoves, and of some of the people whom he met. . . . "There is a Princess Galitzin, for instance, venerable by the length and thickness of her beard, resembling a Grecian philosopher. Such beards," he said, "are common among Slavonian women."

The then ruling Tsar, Alexander I. greeted him warmly, in spite of rumors rife in Europe that the United States was an atheistic nation because God was not once mentioned in its Constitution. The Tsar assured Adams that he thought the political system of the United States was wise and just and that "they might rely on it that he would do nothing to withdraw them from it!"

(The Soviet government will give the American diplomats of 1933 the same assurance of non-meddling in American affairs. It can offer, however, no bearded women.)

RUSSIANS HOPING OF AMERICA.—So often has the advisability of recognizing Soviet Russia been debated in America that the granting of recognition seems like a complicated process. But it could be done most simply. The White House would need only to telephone to the Soviet Information Bureau in Washington where sits Mr. Boris Skvirsky, "unofficial Soviet ambassador." and ask him to query his government about the acceptability of the man nominated by the President as ambassador. Mr. Skvirsky has been waiting a long time for that telephone call. Then, when the Senate approves of the same appointment, recognition is complete and embassies are exchanged.

Recognition could be completed as simply as that, and Mr. Roosevelt, realizing the value of the dramatic element, might do it in that way. But it is doubtful. There are problems of money lent to the Kerensky government, a total of S273.000.000. excluding interest; of the property of American citizens confiscated during the revolution, to the value of about S100.000.000: and of the relations between the Soviet government and Comintern, the Home Office of the World Revolution. Before relations between the United States and Soviet Russia are complete and normal, these matters must be discussed.

Continued on page 60

Continued from page 18

The real problem today seems not to be whether it is wise or unwise to recognize Russia, but how best that recognition can be accorded, considering the various problems that must be discussed before relations are on a normal basis. Opinion differs whether it is better to discuss these disputed things first and to exchange ambassadors only after some understanding has been reached or to exchange ambassadors and then negotiate. The Russians, obviously, prefer the latter. A third choice remains—to send a Trade Commissioner to Russia pending negotiations and exchange of embassies.

The time when the United States could dogmatically lay down conditions for recognition probably passed ten years ago. The best settlement of disputed points that can be reached today is a compromise and that fact has probably been realized at Washington. The Soviet Union has lasted for fifteen years without benefit of American embassy. If the representatives of the two nations keep a sense of the realities, there is no reason why grounds for compromise cannot be found. It w-as once suggested that, before extending recognition, the Senate should appoint a committee to "investigate" the Soviet Union. It has been recently suggested again in Congress. The Russians were once willing, but are evidently not willing today.

RECOGNITION BY COMPROMISE.— In making compromises to their liking, the Americans have one very good bait the ability to extend credits. Under the "Jones" bill, the government may extend such credits "to further foreign trade." The Russians once thought of recognition in terms of political results and of prestige. Today these are less important in Russian eyes than the credits on New York which they hope will accompany recognition.

Even though it might not admit it, the Soviet government will agree to almost anything in exchange for credits . . . but two realities face them. They can agree to pay a part or all of the money lent to their predecessors by America indirectly, by means of a higher interest rate on credits to be received, as Lenin first proposed in 1919. But they will not admit that their principle of refusing to acknowledge the debts of their predecessors is wrong. Neither will they promise a curb on the Communist parties of the world. Dictators though the rulers of Russia are, they will have to give some thought to opinion at home and they cannot "go back on the Revolution," or become "counter-revolutionary." If recognition of Russia depends on securing such statements from the Soviet government, there will be no recognition.

And there will probably be no recognition if embassies are to be exchanged only after all these matters have been settled. The French, who have an embassy in Moscow, have been negotiating on the question of Tsarist debts for more than five years; they are still negotiating. But, during that time, they have not been deprived of the opportunity for direct dealing which comes with recognition and for exchange of views on subjects of common interest. There are many points of common interest between the Soviet Union and the United States—in the Far East, in matters of trade, and in the preservation of world peace. Recognition of Russia, immediate and with detailed negotiations thereafter, will do away with the odd system of having to use the French ambassador. whenever the State Department wishes to communicate with Mr. Litvinov.

England, France, Germany, Japan, and twenty other nations have diplomatic missions in Russia. There are none, however, from most of the Balkan States, from Spain or Portugal, or from South America. In the field of political relations, the experience of the nations which have so recognized Russia has been varied. Sometimes relations between one of them and Russia have been strained. At the moment relations between France and Russia are increasingly friendly, while Russian relations with Great Britain and Germany have grown more tense.

But relations have seldom been strained to the breaking point and most of the recognizing nations have enjoyed five to ten years of unbroken diplomatic intercourse. Mexico did break with Soviet Russia and has never renewed relations. Great Britain has broken once, following a raid by the British Home Office on the Soviet commercial agency in London in 1927.

In commercial relations, the experience of the nations which have recognized Russia—and those which have not—has been uniform. The Soviet Union has met its debts on the dates due. At the present time Soviet Russia, according to American financial experts, owes something less than four hundred million dollars abroad, payable between December, 1933, and December, 1934. Three-fourths of this amount are owed to Germany. Less than fifty million dollars are owed to Great Britain, and less than twenty-five million to America. Soviet commercial policy at the moment is directed toward sharp curtailment of orders placed abroad, while meeting these obligations. All nations have learned that the Soviet government, controlling as it does all of Russia's foreign trade, can place or transfer its orders abroad from one country to another as its owTn political exigencies dictate. When German foreign policy, for instance, has displeased the Soviet government, orders that would normally have been placed in Germany have been promptly transferred to other nations. As a single example, the British herring industry suffered, after the diplomatic break in 1927, while the same industry in Scandinavian countries profited.

NOTES ON A HOT DEBATE.—The whole problem of recognition has, in fact, become something of a fetish. Moral significance has been attached to a simple political act. And recognition has been made to seem like some irrevocable commitment: in reality, it has no more guarantee of permanence than a Soviet marriage. The arguments for and against it have been stated a thousand times—all except the argument of common sense, which says that embassies, after all, are only groups of citizens sent to another nation, whose government is stable. There they carry on the affairs of their fellow citizens, if there is work to be done.

Continued on page 61

Continued from page 60

In the case of Soviet Russia there is much work to do. Fifteen years without political relations have piled up a huge jam of unfinished business. There are inheritances to be transferred and heirs to be found; complicated questions of citizenship; problems of Americans now resident in Russia, some of whom have surrendered their passports, and problems of Russian children, fathered by peripatetic Americans. There are problems concerning Russians living illegally in this country, of extradition, and of patent rights and copyrights in which neither Americans nor Russians now have any protection. There are problems of marriage and of divorce. (Will recognition of Russia mean recognition of the Soviet marriage code and make of Moscow a Red Reno?) There are problems of Russian goods sold in this country, of Soviet orders to American manufacturers. All of these problems will remain without solution so long as there is no recognition and in all of these problems many American citizens are vitally concerned. These, in addition to the problems of government debts, Communist propaganda, and expropriated property, await the arrival of an American embassy to Russia.

The question of recognition has been too much considered from the angle of profit and loss. Pro-Soviet groups have pointed out the various advantages and gains to be derived from recognition, tying many of them to the dollar mark. The potential dangers have been emphasized by various American patriotic societies, by some groups in the Catholic Church, and by the American Federation of Labor. The professional "non-recognizers" have, on the whole, been stronger and better organized, but there has been a curious paradox evident in their ranks. One would expect to find our own largest capitalistic organizations among the groups protesting against the resumption of political relations with a state that opposes private property, individual enterprise, and other advantages of capitalism. Yet the Ford Motor Company, the Chase Bank, the Westinghouse Electric Company, and the Standard Oil Company are not among the "non-recognizers." They have had business dealings with the Soviet Union; they are among the group that think they would find business better if there were recognition.

Both pro- and anti-Soviet recognition groups have probably overplayed their arguments. The recognition of Russia, contrary to patriotic predictions, will hardly spread Communism through America. Not even a thousand Soviet agitators, speaking badly broken English, could help the hopeless American Communist party, whose sole achievement during these troubled days has been to split into four different groups, each claiming infallibility.

Nor will recognition mean American approval of all that the Soviet government does. If recognition had any such meaning, then it would be difficult to justify the maintenance of an American embassy in either Japan or Germany at the moment. Nor are the facts that Russia is largely governed by a secret police organization; nor that it carries on an anti-God campaign, particularly relevant to recognition. Any attempt to apply the facts of the recent British spy trial in Moscow to the question of American recognition had better wait until all the facts are known. If the British boycott of Russian trade is continued, there may be orders for American manufacturers—and. likewise, Russian goods, barred from England, seeking a market in America.

The arguments of the "pro-recognizers" have likewise been overstated. Recognition will not bring great, immediate or unconditioned profits to the American manufacturer. "Bolshevik business" and "Beer" are not the two keys to the solution of the depression. Because 160,000,000 Russians need shoes and clothes there is no reason to think that our shoe factories and textile mills will work overtime to supply them, unless the Americans finance these orders on the basis of long-term credits. Too much has been said about the needs of the Russians, which are great, and too little about their capacity to pay, which varies with the world prices for raw materials which are now low. The latter is a better index to future sales than the former.

Nor will our recognition of Russia mean a solution of the Manchurian problem, as has been predicted, since both America and the Soviet Union are vitally concerned there. The Japanese are not going to retreat from the mainland just because an American embassy arrives in Moscow. But the Japanese will have no further opportunity for trying to play one nation against another, taking advantage of the fact that the two have no political relations.

And, finally, recognition will put the relations of two nations who have much in common on a basis of realities. It will end the pernicious doctrine that we enter into political relations only with those States of whose economic and moral systems and codes we approve. It will bring together two nations who are eager to see that the world keeps the peace—America, for idealistic reasons, and Russia, for whom a war at present would mean the crumbling of whatever economic construction she has been able to complete.
