Maritime Sights Welcome Point in Wedel

Wedel is home to the unique Willkomm Höft, a Welcome Point for ships entering the Port of Hamburg – a must-see for anyone interested in Hamburg’s maritime culture.

The town of Wedel is Hamburg’s direct neighbour to the west and lies on the northern banks of the Elbe river. Its immediate access to the river and its estuary has brought wealth to the town and made its beautiful harbour a focal point. Wedel is especially well-known for its Willkomm Höft (Low German for ‘Welcome Point’) for large vessels entering the Port of Hamburg. 

Welcome to the Port of Hamburg

Every time a large vessel approaches or leaves the Port of Hamburg, the Welcome Point staff in Wedel prepare to welcome the ship and her crew at this point. This charming procedure is the same every time and provides a spectacular sight for visitors both at the Welcome Point itself and the nearby Schulauer Fährhaus restaurant. 

Public loudspeakers on the pier play the national anthem of every large vessel that passes, depending on the flag the ship is flying, along with a welcome message in their respective language as well as in German and English: ‘Welcome to Hamburg. We are pleased to welcome you to the Port of Hamburg.’

A great view of large vessels

Visitors are invited to watch the ceremony from the floating pier on the Elbe river or from the cosy Schulauer Fährhaus restaurant with a snack and drink. The staff at the restaurant will also gladly provide their patrons with additional information on the passing vessels, such as length, width, draught, shipping company and other basic facts – full service for ship spotters. 

This is presented by the five ‘welcoming captains’, who are always up to date on information about the ships and any current changes. Over time, a carefully collected, handwritten card index has been created, including facts and data on around 17,000 vessels. The full welcoming service is carried out for large vessels with a size of 1,000 GT (gross tonnage) and above; smaller ships are welcomed by dipping the flag of the City of Hamburg.

Welcoming ceremonies since 1952

The story of the Welcome Point began officially on 12 June 1952 when Carl Kircheiß, a Hamburg-born captain and polar explorer, who circumnavigated the globe, baptised the flagpole with a bottle of rum. The first vessel to be welcomed at the Welcome Point was the Japanese cargo ship Agaki Maru. Ever since, countless vessels from all around the world have been welcomed and bid farewell.  

Except for during two sad periods: During the flood catastrophes of February 1962 and January 1976, crucial parts of the facility were destroyed. Each time, the operators of the Welcome Point quickly found an adequate solution: an even taller flagpole – and another bottle of rum. 

In 2012, the new owner renovated the Welcome Point and the Schulauer Fährhaus restaurant completely, installed a new speaker system, and built the floating pier structure, which provide an even better view of the ships and an altogether better experience for visitors.

Die Rolle des Yachtmaklers

Was sollten Sie als Verkäufer oder als Käufer von einem Yachtmakler erwarten?

Natürlich sind das zwei ganz unterschiedliche Perspektiven und oft vermeintlich gegensätzliche Interessenlagen.

Der Makler erhält in der Regel vom Eigner des Schiffes den Verkaufsauftrag und ist natürlich daran interessiert, seine Provision zu verdienen. Mach ihn dies automatisch zum Vertretern des Verkäufers? Mit der Erteilung des Verkaufsauftrages und dem Abschluss der Maklervereinbarung geht der Makler natürlich zunächst dem Verkäufer gegenüber die Verpflichtung ein, den Verkäufer als dessen Vertreter zu repräsentieren und das Angebot einem möglichst großen Kreis potenzieller Interessenten zugänglich zu machen. Der Makler als Vertreter beider Parteien beim Yachtkauf: Der Verkäufer vereinbart in der Maklervereinbarung auch die Verkaufsprovision. Steht der Makler dem Verkäufer damit näher als dem Käufer? Zunächst einmal schon, insofern als dass der Makler den Verkäufer natürlich erst einmal besser kennt als den Käufer. Aber die Rolle des Makler ist grundsätzlich unparteiisch. Wie kann das sein, wo doch der Verkäufer argumentieren wird dass er die Verkaufsprovision zu bezahlen hat? Dafür könne er schließlich erwarten dass dieser seine Interessen vertritt. Nun, das ist insofern zutreffend als dass der Verkäufer bei Abschluss der Maklervereinbarung das Zugeständnis des Provisionsanspruchs macht. Dennoch ist diese Annahme in der Gesamtbetrachtung unzutreffend, denn letztlich ist die Maklerprovision Teil des Kaufpreises den beim Abschluss letztlich der Käufer akzeptiert und bezahlt. Daher ist das korrekte und zutreffende Ergebnis dieser Betrachtung, dass der Makler letztendlich beiden Parteien gleichermaßen verpflichtet ist. Was kann der Verkäufer von einem Makler erwarten?

Ein guter Yachtmakler berät den Kunden hinsichtlich des zu erwartenden Verkaufswertes der Yacht. Der Verkäufer sollte nicht erwarten, einen deutlich höheren Preis zu erzielen als er dies beim selbstorganisierten Verkauf würde. Aber er darf erwarten dass der Makler die Fachkenntnis hat, einen marktgerechten Preis zu ermitteln und vorzuschlagen. Die wesentliche Aufgabe des Maklers liegt darin, aussagefähiges und ansprechendes Präsentationsmaterial zusammenzustellen und mit möglichst großer Reichweite zu veröffentlichen. Darüber hinaus bietet ein Makler die Yacht gegebenenfalls bestehenden Kunden an die konkret auf der Suche nach einem vergleichbaren Objekt sind.

Der Makler setzt seinen Klienten regelmäßig von der erzielten Reichweite der Verkaufspräsentation in Kenntnis und beantwortet alle Anfragen und hält den Kontakt zu den Interessenten. Dies können, je nach Schiff, regelmäßig zwischen 20 und 50 Anfragen sein bis es zu einer ersten konkreten Besichtigung kommt. Aber das Ziel ist der erkauf und in der Regel werden sich 5 bis 10 interessenten das Schiff ansehen bevor es dann tatsächlich zu einem konkreten Angebot und schließlich zum Abschluss kommt. Bei konkreten Besichtigungsanfragen organisiert der Makler in Abstimmung mit dem Eigner die Terminvereinbarungen, eventuelle Werfttermine zur Besichtigung des Unterwasserschiffes und schlägt dem Verkäufer auf Anfrage geeignete Gutachter vor oder gibt Empfehlungen wie diese zu finden wären (Gutachtervereinigungen, etc.).

Sobald es zum Abschluss kommt, berät der Makler beides Parteien hinsichtlich der erforderlichen Dokumente und Formalitäten und empfiehlt gegebenenfalls rechtliche oder steuerliche Beratung um eine rechtssichere Abwicklung zu gewährleisten.

Was kann der Käufer von einem Makler erwarten?

Der Makler informiert den Kunden über das Schiff nach bestem Wissen und Gewissen. Fragen die nicht aus der vorliegenden Dokumentation des Schiffes zu beantworten sind leitet der Makler zeitnah an den Eigner weiter und bemüht sich, die erwünschten Informationen zeitnah zur Verfügung zu stellen.

Auf keinen Fall sollte ein Makler ihm bekannte Mängel verschweigen. Die ist nicht nur im Interesse des Käufers. Auch der Makler hat ein grundsätzliches Interesse an korrekter Präsentation, denn letztendlich tritt ein Makler regemäßig mit seinem guten Ruf für das zu vermittelnde Geschäft ein. Der Makler berät den Kaufinteressenten sofern dieser ein Angebot abgeben möchte, ob dessen Preisvorstellungen für den Verkäufer realistisch und akzeptabel sein könnten. Sollten sich bei der Besichtigung oder durch ein Gutachten bisher nicht berücksichtigte Mängel ergeben die eine Preisanpassung rechtfertigen, bemüht sich der Makler, zwischen Verkäufer und Kaufinteressent zu vermitteln. Sollten Formerfordernissen beim Vertragsschluss dies verlangen oder sollte eine rechtssichere Ausgestaltung des Kaufvorgangs die Hinzuziehung eines Notars, anwaltliche oder steuerliche Beratung nötig machen, wird der Makler, sobald er davon Kenntnis erlangt, darauf hinweisen und kann gegebenenfalls auch Empfehlungen aussprechen. Kaufvorgang und Deposit:

Üblicherweise wird der Makler in dem Moment wo ein Angebot vom Kaufinteressenten vom Eigner akzeptiert wird, vom Käufer ein Deposit, also eine erstattungsfähige beziehungsweise mit dem Kaufpreis zu verrechnende Anzahlung üblicherweise in Höhe von 10% des Kaufpreises verlangen. Mit Überweisung dieser Anzahlung und der Unterschrift unter den Vorvertrag (oft auch als MOA, Memorandum of Agreement bezeichnet) verpflichtet sich der Verkäufer, die Yacht zum vereinbarten Preis an den Kaufinteressenten zu verkaufen. Damit ist die Yacht für den Kaufinteressenten zunächst reserviert. Nun sind Verkäufer und der künftige Yachteigner in der Pflicht: Der Verkäufer muss im erforderlichen Umfang Zugang zum Schiff gewähren und für die Beibringung der erforderlichen Dokumente kooperieren. Der Kaufinteressent ist im Gegenzug verpflichtet, innerhalb einer zu vereinbarenden angemessenen Frist die Besichtigungen und eventuell Gutachten abzuschließen und seine finale Entscheidung hinsichtlich des Kaufes mitzuteilen. Sollten sich bei Besichtigung oder Gutachten noch nicht berücksichtigte preisrelevante Mängel oder Beanstandungen ergeben, so kann der Kaufinteressent ein Änderungsangebot abgeben oder vom Kauf zurücktreten. Wird ein Änderungsangebot abgegeben, muss der Verkäufer entscheiden ob er dieses akzeptiert. Sobald sich beide Parteien einig sind, kommt es zu eigentlichem Vertragsschluss und Durchführung. Diese kann je nach Land und geltendem Recht Formerfordernissen wie etwa notarieller Beurkundung unterliegen. Im deutschen Recht besteht auch bei eingetragenen Seeschiffen keine Pflicht zur notariellen Beurkundung, allerdings ist der Vertrag bis zur Erfüllung, also Übergabe des Schiffes und Übertragung des Eigentums, z.b. durch Eintragung ins Seeschiffsregister, schwebend unwirksam und wird ohne Notariellen Vertragsschluß erst durch die beidseitige Erfüllung rechtskräftig. Auch die Eintragung in Registern anderer Länder kann die Vorlage einer notariellen Urkunde verlangen. Wenn es zum Abschluss kommt, wird der Makler das hinterlegte Deposit mit dem Verkäufer abzüglich seiner Provision abrechnen. Sollte eine der Parteien vom Vertragsschluss zurücktreten, wird der Makler das Deposit, gegebenenfalls abzüglich mit dem Kaufinteressenten vereinbarten in dessen Namen getätigten Auslagen erstatten.

Hinweis zur Hinterlegung des Deposits: Es wird empfohlen, die Depositzahlung mittels eines Escrowservices, also über ein pfändungssicheres Und-Konto abzuwickeln. Hierbei verhält es sich so, dass der Zahlungsempfänger den Absender der Zahlung zum Zahlungsvorgang über einen vereinbarten Dienstleisters einläd. Nachdem die Zahlung auf dem Anderkonto des Zahlungsdienstleisters eingegangen ist, kann diese nur mit Zustimmung des Zahlungsgebers an den endgültigen Empfänger freigegeben werden. Im Gegenzug bedarf es der Zustimmung des Zahlungsempfängers wenn die hinterlegte Zahlung rückabgewickelt werden soll.

From September 6 to 8, 2024 , the unique In-Water Boat Show awaits you for the second time, closing the gap in the autumn trade fair offer for the boating industry in Hamburg. Since the hanseboot was discontinued, water sports enthusiasts on the Elbe and the North Sea have been longing for a new and exciting event - since 2023 it has finally arrived!

The HAMBURG YACHTFESTIVAL is organized by the agency Yachtfestival365, which also organizes the largest German in-water boat show the ancora YACHTFESTIVAL in Neustadt in Holstein on the Baltic Sea. Managing Director Heiko Zimmermann and his team are bringing their expertise and passion to Hamburg to create an unforgettable experience here too.

You can look forward to impressive boats and yachts waiting for you on the jetties in the picturesque Osthafen. In addition, our exhibitors will present exhibitors present their high-quality range of equipment and services in pagoda tents . But that's not all: you can expect a varied varied stage and action program all about boating. Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of water sports and experience exciting presentations, workshops and spectacular demonstrations.

The HAMBURG BOOTSMESSE coincides with the big marina festival which is organized by the 52 clubs at the Hamburg marina. In addition, the Days of Sailing of the German Sailing Association and the Safety Days of the cruiser division club take place.

And a special highlight awaits you on Saturday with a large maritime flea market . Here you can rummage for treasures and discover unique maritime souvenirs.

Take the train to Hamburg main station. Change there to the S1 to Wedel. On foot, leave the station and walk straight ahead along Gorch-Fock-Strasse. This becomes the street Am Freibad and later Lüttsandsdamm . At the end turn right into Deichstraße and you will reach the Hamburg marina . (Footpath approx. 2 km)

Freeway A7, take exit Bahrenfeld and from there follow the B431 to Wedel. Turn left into Bahnhofstraße , turn right into Gorch-Fock-Straße and keep following the road (becomes Am Freibad and later Lüttsandsdamm ). From Lüttsandsdamm turn right into Deichstraße until you reach Hamburger Yachthafen .

E. Wedel is a legend. A brand associated with chocolate of exceptional quality and a pleasure to taste. Its history dates back to 1851 and is inextricably linked with the three Wedel generations that built one of the most powerful Polish companies.

KAROL WEDEL OPENS A CONFECTIONER’S SHOP AND A CRAFT WORKSHOP AT MIODOWA STREET IN WARSAW

In the tasteful interiors at Miodowa Street, Karol Wedel, accompanied by his wife, Karolina, served drinking chocolate. In addition to the sweet delicacies, ”Cukiernia E.Wedel” (E. Wedel Confectioner’s Shop) offered also health products: malt syrup, cough caramels and peppermint pastilles.

Wedel’s delicacies were highly popular among the local people, who visited the shop in crowds, willing to taste the interesting and sophisticated flavour compositions not yet known to them.

KAROL WEDEL GIVES HIS SON EMIL A CHOCOLATE FACTORY AS A WEDDING GIFT

Having already gained appropriate skills under the watchful eye of his father and after having practiced in the confectionery art in Paris for two years, Emil took control over the company in 1865.

Immediately after receiving the company as a wedding gift, Emil moved the factory to a tenement at Szpitalna Street in Warsaw, where a brand shop and an E.Wedel Chocolate Café ”Staroświecki Sklep” (Old-fashioned Shop) are located to this day.

EMIL WEDEL PERSONALLY PUTS HIS SIGNATURE ON EACH BAR OF CHOCOLATE

Wedel’s chocolate was so popular that fakes began to appear quickly. In order to eliminate them from the market, Emil decided to affix a handwritten signature to each bar of chocolate.

With the passing of time, the E.Wedel signature became the identification of the brand and grew into its history so strongly that it successfully operates to this day, only in a slightly modified form.

1919 - 1923

WOMEN'S EMANCIPATION IN E.WEDEL FACTORY

Respect for women, their work and skills is permanently inscribed in E. Wedel's organizational culture. This direction dates back to 1919, when in the difficult period after Poland regained independence, the chocolate enterprise was efficiently and vigorously managed by Emil's widow - Eugenia Wedlowa. Although women started working in the company a bit later, in 1925, their skills and ideas quickly turned out to be of great value for the entire organization.

JAN WEDEL TAKES OVER THE FACTORY AFTER HIS FATHER, EMIL

Emil, similarly as previously his father, Karol, also educated his son, Jan, so that one day he could take over the family heritage. Until 1919, the company is jointly managed by a father and son.

Finally, Jan took over the heritage in 1923, when both of his parents were already dead.

In 1932, the company ”Emil Wedel i Syn” (Emil Wedel and Son) transformed into ”Fabryka Czekolady E.Wedel, Spółka Akcyjna” (E.Wedel Chocolate Factory).

THE E.WEDEL TRADEMARK IS ESTABLISHED - A BOY ON A ZEBRA

In 1926, at the request of Jan Wedel, one of the most popular advertising graphics in Poland was created - the silhouette of a boy riding a striped zebra, carrying bars of chocolate. The creator of the creation was the Italian painter and caricaturist Leonetto Cappiello, called the father of modern poster and advertising art. To this day, a neon sign with a boy on a zebra can be found on the roof of the oldest “Pijalni Czekolady E.Wedel” (E. Wedel Chocolate Lounges) at Szpitalna Street in Warsaw.

Jan also implements new order and employs ... women, which leads to a fivefold increase in employment in the factory. Employees are covered by a special social system, among other things, they are provided with in-house dental care, a nursery and kindergarten for children and the possibility of going to the company holiday camp.

THE GOLDEN AGE OF E.WEDEL CHOCOLATE FACTORY

In 1931, Jan Wedel moved the factory to Zamoyski Street in Warsaw.

Construction of the new factory stirred many emotions among the citizens of Warsaw. For Jan, however, the changes were necessary — he imported the most up-to-date machinery for the manufacture of hard and aerated chocolate as well as the first equipment for wrapping caramels in shiny wrappings in Poland. The factory operates at Zamoyski Street in Warsaw to this date.

Jan Wedel modernised the logistics department and cars with the inscription ”E.Wedel” and a characteristic bar of chocolate appeared at the streets of Warsaw.

In addition, the factory buys an RWD-13 plane, which transports E. Wedel products to the Polish coast and at the same time promotes the brand. E. Wedel also uses non-standard promotional media, for example by introducing the first vending machine in Poland at the entrance to Skaryszewski Park near the Factory, or buying contextual advertising in the press and giving interviews, where we read: "Wedel's chocolate is the perfect combination of sugar that strengthens the brain and nourishing cocoa".

PRODUCTION OF PTASIE MLECZKO® FOAMS TAKES OFF

Jan Wedel, inspired by his travel around France, decided to begin the manufacture of milky marshmallows covered in original Wedel chocolate. This was an innovative product with a surprising taste, which quickly turned out a great success.

Ptasie Mleczko Ⓡ with its over 80-year history is still the flagship product of E. Wedel, adored by Poles and gourmets all over the world, winning numerous awards for unique taste and quality.

1939 - 1944

CHOCOLATE FACTORY DURING WORLD WAR II

Although the factory operates during the occupation, confectionery is manufactured only for the needs of the German occupier. However, this turn of events does not prevent Jan Wedel from engaging in helping the poorest and offering them hot meals in the canteen of the Prague factory. During the September campaign in 1939 and the siege of Warsaw, Jan Wedel decides to open the warehouses of his plants and distribute food products among the inhabitants. Then he loses enormous fortune, but saves hundreds of people from hunger.

After the capitulation of the Warsaw Uprising, Jan is arrested and sent to a transit camp in Pruszków for civilians evacuated from Warsaw. The factory workers prudently wall up some of the factory's products, thus preventing the German troops from plundering them.

In September 1944, everything that the German troops could not loot was stolen by the Soviet army.

ZAKŁADY PRZEMYSŁU CUKIERNICZEGO IM. 22 LIPCA D. E.WEDEL

Until 1949, the Chocolate Factory and E. Wedel brand stores in Warsaw, other Polish cities such as Łódź, Gdynia, Zakopane, Ciechocinek, and in the world - in Lviv, Vilnius and Paris, were owned by the Wedel family.

After the end of World War II, Jan Wedel worked at the factory as an advisor, but after a few months he was fired from it and was forbidden to enter its premises. Jan Wedel died in 1960. In 1949 the name of the factory changed to Zakłady Przemysłu Cukierniczego im. July 22 d. E. Wedel (22nd July Confectionery Industry Factory, prev. E.Wedel).

OWNERSHIP CHANGES

1989 was a year of transformation and long-awaited changes, and the beginning of the privatization of Polish enterprises. At first, Nestle expressed its interest in buying E. Wedel, but ultimately it was the American investor PepsiCo who took over the brand.

However, it soon turned out that this investment is not fully in line with PepsiCo's development strategy and the American company decided to divide and sell E. Wedel factories.

In 1999, the Syrena confectionery plant in Warsaw was sold to the Finnish Leaf, the chocolate factory to the British brand Cadbury Schweppes, and the biscuit factory in Płońsk to the French Danon.

THE LOTTE GROUP - A NEW CHAPTER IN E. Wedel HISTORY

Since September 2010, E. Wedel has been part of the Japanese LOTTE Group - an international concern founded in 1948, initially specializing in the chewing gum sector, and now operating in various sectors: food, confectionery, tourism, chemical, and even construction and finance.

The company fully retains its traditional character and the values ​​developed by the founders. LOTTE Wedel wants to continue the work and achievements of the Wedel family and, like them, influence people with their activities in accordance with the mission "We are constantly changing to inspire joy in us and our clients". Thanks to this, E. Wedel is a unique combination of autonomy operating within the specificity of a given market, based on the best international practices.

E.WEDEL BECOMES THE FIRST NATIONAL SPONSOR OF THE EUROPEAN FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP UEFA EURO 2012

In March 2012, E. Wedel became the first national sponsor of the UEFA European Football Championship EURO 2012.

All activities related to this prestigious sports event were aimed at bringing a smile to the faces of all who took part in it. E. Wedel accompanied all football fans, as well as all events related to UEFA EURO 2012.

Confectioners from Wedel created a chocolate sculpture depicting the National Stadium in Warsaw, for which they used 400 kg of chocolate, as well as chocolate replicas of cups.

E.WEDEL BRAND PRODUCTS ARE GAINING NEW MARKETS

E. Wedel is consistently expanding its product offer, focusing also on expansion into foreign markets. All this so that consumers all over the world can find out about the taste of exceptional sweets.

Wedel's products can be found in over 60 countries, incl. in the United States and Canada, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, Bosnia, Greece, Kosovo, the Arab Emirates, Qatar, Mexico and Ukraine.

The company also presents its products at international food fairs. In recent years, it was possible to try Wedel products at the fairs: Anuga in Cologne, ISM in Cologne, Gulfood in Dubai, Alimentaria in Barcelona and FHA in Singapore.

E. Wedel has been dynamically developing its activities in Poland and abroad for 170 years, offering iconic products such as Ptasie Mleczko®, Torcik Wedlowski, full and filled chocolates or Mieszanka Wedlowska. In addition to the well-known offer, it produces more and more delicious new products, incl. Czekotubka, a series of filled chocolates, bars and cookies or Karmellove chocolates - the first such full bars on the market and crispy Cookie chocolates, as well as limited editions of Ptasie Mleczko® foams.

The product offer also includes E. Wedel ice cream on a stick, in a mug, in a cone or in the form of the well-known Czekotubka. E. Wedel is also joy and pleasure, which we emphasize not only in our campaigns, but also in everything we do.
