About Lake Champlain

Why is Lake Champlain a good sailing destination?

Set amidst the panoramic vistas of the Adirondack Mountains and the Green Mountains, Lake Champlain stands as one of North America’s iconic freshwater yachting destinations. Its reputation as a haven for sailors isn’t by mere chance but stems from a unique blend of natural beauty, varied sailing environments, and historical richness that few other places offer. As the trusted companion of countless sailors, Yachting.Rent is privileged to share why Lake Champlain is regarded as a sailor’s dream and a must-visit destination for anyone yearning for an unparalleled maritime experience.

The very geography of Lake Champlain sets it apart. Spanning across New York and Vermont, with a tip touching Quebec, the lake covers a vast expanse offering varied sailing conditions in one destination. Its broad stretches invite sailors to unfurl their sails and be carried by the winds, feeling the thrill of the open waters. The numerous islands, each with its unique character and story, provide perfect anchorages, offering chances to explore, camp, or simply enjoy the serenity. From secluded coves ideal for a quiet afternoon to open areas where the wind and waves challenge a sailor’s skill, Lake Champlain promises diversity. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor seeking your next adventure or a beginner eager to experience the joys of sailing, Lake Champlain accommodates all.

Beyond the pure sailing appeal, Lake Champlain is steeped in history. Its waters have witnessed naval battles, and its islands and shores are home to lighthouses, forts, and relics from times gone by. A sailing trip here isn’t just about navigating waters; it’s a journey through time. Sites like Fort Ticonderoga and the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum offer sailors a chance to moor their vessels and step into the annals of history. Moreover, the lake’s surroundings, with vibrant towns and villages, offer a cultural treat. Local festivals, artisan shops, and gastronomic delights add layers to the sailing experience, making every trip a holistic adventure.

Finally, Lake Champlain’s unique ecosystem further elevates its status as a premier sailing destination. The lake’s clean waters teem with diverse fish species, making it a hotspot for angling enthusiasts. Birdwatchers find joy in spotting rare species, while those inclined towards nature’s beauty can revel in the sight of lush forests reflecting on the calm waters during sunrise or sunset. Yachting.Rent, having navigated these waters for years, can attest to the ever-changing, always captivating tableau that Lake Champlain paints every day.

To encapsulate, Lake Champlain is not just a body of water; it’s a canvas where nature, history, and sailing craft come together to create unparalleled maritime stories. At Yachting.Rent, we believe that every sailor deserves to witness this magic at least once. So, if you’re charting your next sailing destination, let the allure of Lake Champlain guide your compass. Here, the mountains, waters, and winds whisper tales of adventures waiting to be lived.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Lake Champlain

Lake Champlain, with its sprawling expanse and intricate waterways, offers diverse sailing experiences that cater to a broad spectrum of maritime enthusiasts. The choice of vessel, be it a traditional sailing boat or a modern catamaran, can significantly shape one’s adventure on this iconic lake. At Yachting.Rent, we pride ourselves on understanding the nuances of Lake Champlain and are perfectly poised to guide sailors in making an informed choice between these two popular vessels. Here’s a deep dive into the strengths and experiences each vessel offers, ensuring that your journey on Lake Champlain’s waters aligns with your vision of a perfect maritime escapade.

Sailing boats have long been synonymous with the romance of the seas – and in the case of Lake Champlain, the romance of freshwater expanses. These vessels, characterized by their single-hulled design, provide an intimate connection with the water. As the boat heels with the wind and cuts through the waves, sailors can feel each ripple and gust, offering a raw, unfiltered experience of the lake. Sailing boats are perfect for those who seek agility and responsiveness. Their streamlined design allows for precision maneuvering, making them ideal for navigating Lake Champlain’s intricate shorelines, hidden coves, and narrow channels between islands. Moreover, traditional sailing boats on Lake Champlain often carry with them a sense of history, connecting sailors to age-old maritime traditions. For solo adventurers, couples, or small groups who crave an authentic sailing experience, these boats are hard to rival.

On the other hand, catamarans, with their dual-hulled design, introduce sailors to a world of stability, space, and luxury. These vessels are less prone to heeling, ensuring a more stable voyage – a feature especially appreciated by those new to sailing or families with young children. Catamarans, given their wider beam, offer expansive deck spaces, making them perfect for group gatherings, sunbathing, or simply lying under the stars on a clear Lake Champlain night. Additionally, their design often includes spacious cabins and modern amenities, ensuring that even multi-day trips on the lake are wrapped in comfort. For those who envision their Lake Champlain adventure as a blend of sailing and leisure, or for larger groups wanting communal spaces, catamarans emerge as the vessel of choice.

In conclusion, the decision between a sailing boat and a catamaran on Lake Champlain hinges on personal preferences and the nature of the adventure one seeks. If raw, intimate interaction with the lake’s moods is your calling, the sailing boat awaits. However, if you desire a blend of relaxation, comfort, and sailing, the catamaran beckons. At Yachting.Rent, we are equipped with both types of vessels, each maintained to the highest standards, ensuring that regardless of your choice, Lake Champlain’s magic is experienced in its fullest glory. As you ponder upon your vessel of choice, remember that with either option, Lake Champlain’s vistas, mysteries, and stories remain ever inviting, promising memories that linger long after the sails are lowered.

Play on the beach or bask in the sunshine with a scenic lunch or dinner at one of the many lakeside restaurants dotting the shore. We even have restaurants accessible by boat. Everyone is always welcomed by friendly faces and Adirondack hospitality.

Leave No Trace and Love Your ADK

The magic of the Adirondacks is the result of previous generations taking a long view and protecting the mountains, lakes, and rivers within the Blue Line. That tradition continues today as we support and encourage everyone to practice Leave No Trace ethics , which help protect the lands and waters of the Adirondacks.

In Depth: Making Lake Champlain more accessible

T he upgrades debuting soon at the Community Sailing Center on the Burlington waterfront are part of what the organization's leadership hopes becomes an "accessible mecca."

Upgrades coming to the Community Sailing Center through the $5.6 million Lake Access for All capital campaign include a launch ramp, a pier, a universally accessible ramp and walkways, and a dredged area for sailboat launching. The ramp and walkways represent major improvements over previous amenities, which were bumpy or gravelly and more difficult to access for seniors, people who use wheelchairs, or people with other mobility challenges, the destination acknowledged.

Owen Milne, the executive director of the nonprofit, said accessibility is a vital part of the Community Sailing Center's mission. Additionally, it is a good strategy to help make the Burlington area more attractive both to travelers and to Vermont's aging population.

"When we look at the aging boomer, especially the wealth transfer that will come from it, that is a growth opportunity as it relates to places on Lake Champlain and anywhere as it relates to tourism and recreation," Milne said in an appearance on NBC5 In Depth.

Milne said almost half the people who visit the Community Sailing Center each year are visitors to Burlington.

"We can turn this into an accessible mecca for people as part of that aging population," Milne said, adding that as people age and experience possible changes to their mobility, increased accessibility could signal that the Burlington area is a safe and comfortable place to visit and return to multiple times.

The completion of the Lake Access for All campaign will dramatically ease access to the lake for users of kayaks or paddle boards, Milne predicted. Those people have often been challenged by having to lug their gear long distances to the water or have had to vie for space with powerboats to get on the water.

The sailing center's new improvements will be supportive of people regardless of income, age, and ability, Milne said, while locating the easier lake access next to a building with bathrooms and parking. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for June 1 to celebrate the completion of the project.

Watch the video above for the complete interview with Owen Milne that aired this week on NBC5 In Depth.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

sailboats lake champlain

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

sailboats lake champlain

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
