Borneo: Sailing Sabah’s West Coast

Explore the natural beauty of Borneo, Malaysia.

Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah is an ideal base for yachts, having both an international airport and excellent marina facilities. Undoubtedly this this lush corner of Borneo will one day be one of Asia’s most popular yachting destinations and the government has been working hard to enhance the attraction for boating tourism with a series of new developments. In the nearby port of Labuan a public marina has recently been completed, and more facilities are sure to follow.

From Kota Kinabalu the most accessible islands are in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. From here one can travel up or down the west coast towards scenic bays, rivers, and islands with attractions above and below water. North of Kota Kinabalu is Mantanani, notable for resident dugong (sea cows), a sheltered anchorage, deserted white sand beaches and typically crystal clear waters.

Just 35 nautical miles south of Kota Kinabalu is Pulau Tiga (the original “survivor” island from the reality TV series). Geothermal activity below the centre of the island has created warm bubbling mud baths which are not only relaxing to sit in but also therapeutic. Here one can stretch the legs on nature trails which take you through the jungle. Resident wildlife include macaques, giant monitor lizards, wild boar, and hornbill.

Further north is Mengalum Island, where you can have a hand at fishing in an area that is known for Dogtooth and Yellow fin Tuna. The adventurous divers among you may want to venture further north again to a coral atoll called Layang Layang. Layang Layang is famous for its resident schools of Hammerhead sharks, and incredible underwater visibility that rarely drops below 30 metres.

After a cruise, visitors can set their sights on climbing the majestic Mt Kinabalu, SE Asia’s highest peak, or take on a white water rafting challenge on one of the major rivers flowing down from the Croker Range. Culturally, there are many places of interest from traditional “kampung air” (water villages), longhouses and the famous House of Skulls where the local Kadazan tribe displays trophies from a not so distant, headhunting past. A sejour in Kota Kinabalu offers the opportunity to relax tired muscles at a 5 star beach resort and pamper oneself with shopping, spa therapies and fine dining.

Sabah’s Northern Tip – Natural Beauty and Seclusion

Discover the secluded northern beaches and islands of Borneo, starting from the sleepy and idyllic town of Kudat. Kudat, once the capital of British North Borneo, used to be a stop-ever point for ships carrying cargo back and forth from Labuan to Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan or up to the Philippines.

Sabah Borneo yacht Anchorage

This northern region is still very rural, however with a new marina, golf course, and a planned tropical villa development, the northern most tip of Borneo promises to be a cruising playground of the future. The area’s natural beauty is set to harness a new wave of discerning travellers seeking the ultimate tropical lifestyle away from the crowds of the enduringly popular Bali & Phuket. Furthermore, adjacent to the marina in Kudat is a small dry dock, with haul out by travel lift, making it an ideal place for yachts to carry out minor maintenance.

Kudat is also the heartland of the Rungus tribe, a subsection of the Dusun people. Many Rungus still live in longhouses (communal dwellings where each family has their own sleeping and cooking quarters but shares a long verandah) and visits can be arranged offering an insight into the customs, music, dance and cuisine of this traditional culture.

Offshore, past the northern tip of Borneo, are the islands of Banggi, Balambangan and Malawali, which are gazetted to become Malaysia’s newest and largest Marine Park. However, please beware of the shallow fringing reefs surrounding these islands. In fact the reef hazard means that there are several shipwrecks for the underwater adventurer to explore, many from WWII, lying in 20 to 50 metres of depth.

Banggi, Balambangan and Malawali are only accessible by boat. Banggi itself is the largest island in Malaysia with an area of 440 square km, and is very quiet with a population of only 20,000. These islands offer a real escape and feeling of isolation, with empty white sand beaches, jungle covered hillsides, clear waters, beautiful bays, reefs and mangroves. Here there are indigenous people who still live in isolation from the modern world and retain century-old traditions.

Sabah’s East Coast – A Wildlife Safari

The East Coast of Sabah is divided from the West Coast by the rugged Crocker mountain range and visitors often fly into Sandakan which becomes the starting point, or gateway, to a remarkable wildlife safari.

Beautiful natural waterfall setting in Borneo, West Malaysia

In Sandakan itself is the world renowned Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. Known not only for its contribution to the research and rehabilitation of the Orang Utan’s, the centre also focuses on the study of the endangered Bornean Rhino. Labuk Bay Conservation Area is another 30 minutes from here and known for the Proboscis or long-nosed monkeys.

A visit to the Sandakan yacht club, together with the English Tea house and the Agnes Keith museum, are all that remain to remind the visitor that this was once a charming, even idyllic, outpost of the British Empire, replete with white chapels and picket fences. For a sense of this forgotten age, Agnes Keiths memoire (“Land Below the Wind”) is a highly recommended read.

Sailing out of Sandakan Bay and into the Sulu Sea we find the serene and secluded tropical islands of the Turtle Island Marine Park. The park has an important turtle breeding program, the first and largest in South East Asia, and they are safe-havens for both Green and Hawksbill Turtles. A few hours further north, Lankayan Island, known for Whale Shark spotting, holds crystal waters and healthy coral reefs. In diving circles Langkayan is highly regarded as a “macro” paradise.

Sailing south of Sandakan we can find the mouth of the Kinabatangan, the second longest river in Malaysia, with a length of 560 kilometers from its headwaters in the mountains of southwest Sabah, to its outlet at the Sulu Sea. A wide river with deep channels, navigable for yachts with shallow drafts, the Kinabatangan is known for its remarkable wildlife including large primates, crocodiles, snakes and elephants, and fascinating habitats such as limestone caves at Gomantong hill, riverine forest, oxbow lakes and salty mangrove swamps.

A helicopter flight, or off road 4×4 drive, provides the serious nature lover access to the remote but spectacular Meliau basin, and/or the Tabin Wildlife Reserve, known for Pygmy Elephants, and the rare Borneo Rhinoceros.

Luxury Yacht Rental in Borneo

Luxury yacht charter guide to borneo.

Humid, wild, and filled with eco rich treasures – there’s a reason that even just the name Borneo leaves pioneers of paradise perfectly starry eyed. From pygmy elephants to baby orangutans, toucans, and gibbons; stepping ashore onto Borneo is like stepping into a David Attenborough documentary. But it’s not the rainforest clad land that holds all the pleasure, the ocean too is a whirlwind of sweet surprise. From diving down to admire blooming coral gardens to snorkelling alongside the sea gipsies, Borneo is a bounty of Shangri La scenes.

Reasons to Charter a Yacht to Borneo

Sea gipsies.

The Bajau are also known as people of the sea or nicknamed ‘sea gipsies’ due to their floating villages, impressive free diving capabilities, and commitment or necessity of living life around the clock out on the water. Semi nomadic and found scattered around the Pacific, including the coastline of Borneo, it’s a rare privilege to spend time in these communities, to see the stilt houses, and maybe even go out snorkelling with a Bajau to witness first-hand their uncanny ability to see underwater.

Epically Eco Rich

Look up the dictionary definition of jungle and you are sure to find Borneo painted between the pages. Epically eco rich, you can find a wealth of natural wonders waiting for you in Borneo. This is the home of the famed Orangutans, our orange haired brethren who provide hours of fascination just watching them swing from the branch. If you ever tyre of Orangutans, there’s howling gibbons, pygmy elephants, clouded leopards, and saltwater crocodiles to fill in the gaps.

Tropical Panoramas

For those who adore the kind of yacht charters where your jaw drops the floor time and time again, Borneo will blow you away. This is a land of ancient rainforests and important conservation projects ensuring that huge swathes of the jungle remain untouched. When not knee deep in the sweltering orchid strewn foliage, the ocean panoramas are something else with their endless teals and stilted homes.

One of the most beautiful caves of Borneo Gomantong

Where to Visit in Borneo

While it may only claim a smidge of the island for itself, Sabah is a heavenly highlight of a yacht charter to Borneo. Turquoise waters, kaleidoscopic corals, an endless display of marine life, and the rising shadow of Mt Kinabalu makes for an epic backdrop to spend days snorkelling, hiking, and seeking the enigmatic Pygmy Elephants. There’s so many highlights marking Sabah on the map – from the forest reserve of Deramakot to the Semporna Archipelago and the swinging primates of Sepilok.

A beautiful waterfront and lashings of history marks Kuching on the map as a must-see port of call for yacht charters seeking colourful cities with strong historical pasts. A medley of tribal, Malay, and Chinese influences can be found scattered across the town. Visit the markets, stroll along the waterfront with its night lights glinting, and be sure to visit the nearby Mulu National Park with their deep dark bat caves. The mangroves of Bako National Park are also close by, enticing hikers to head into the mangroves where wild orchids run riot.

Kinabatangan River

If you want your wealth of wildlife in one single sail, make it drifting down the Kinabatangan River. The jungle rich riverbanks are perfect for viewing swinging orangutans and herds of Pygmy elephants who bustle and bathe in the cool waters. This is also where you may see the proboscis monkey with its fascinating nose. A safari sail along these shores is also amazing for bird lovers who can expect to see toucans, rhinoceros hornbills, and serpent eagles.

When to Charter a Yacht to Borneo

Between the months of March and October, Borneo is simmering in its dry season making it a sultry time to visit if you want to avoid the longest spell of rains. Like any tropical rainforest, Borneo is susceptible to short sharp short showers even on its driest days.

Tanjung Aru, Sabah: A Perfect Beach Trip from KK

  • Post Author: borneoadmin

Six kilometres west from Kota Kinabalu, the capital city of Sabah, the South China Sea washes upon a long, wide stretch of dark yellow sand fringed by casuarina trees and tall palms. Known as the Tanjung Aru beach, the sunset views here are legendary, drawing both tourists and locals.

The beach and island vistas along Sabah’s coast afford some of the most eye-catching and rewarding experiences in the world, including spectacular marine life.

The Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park of Tanjung Aru spreads over 4,929 hectares and covers five islands located between 3km and 8km off Kota Kinabalu. The islands (“pulau” in Malay) are Gaya, Sapi, Manukan, Mamutik and Sulug. These offer soft white sands and are excellent spots for diving and snorkelling. Island hopping is a popular activity here

Getting To Tanjung Aru From Kota Kinabalu

Tanjung Aru Beach is a mere 8 to 10-minute ride from Kota Kinabalu using the local taxi services. It is 5.7km by road from KK International Airport to Beach 1. Local bus services leave from stations across the KK City Hall or the Wawasan Plaza terminal. The bus trip takes 20 minutes.

Tanjung Aru Attractions

Following are some of the most popular places that you must visit when you’re in Tanjung Aru:

1. First, Second And Third Beach

The beach area, more than 2km long, is categorised by the local residents as Beaches 1, 2 and 3. While the beautiful sunset can be viewed from all three beaches, Beach 1 in particular is the spot to head to if you are looking to savour a wide array of local foods from the hawker market and seafood restaurants in the district.

Beach 1 stretches onto Beach 2 with its share of street food and open vistas.

Beach 3 is generally the quietest. If you decide to avoid the main buzz, plan for a family picnic, beach sports, a relaxing run or some navel gazing along this stretch. All the beaches, though, have far fewer people during the day and the warm shallow waters are inviting enough for a dip anytime. In the distance, the offshore islands of Sulug and Manukan can be seen silhouetted in the horizon.

2. Prince Philip Park

The Prince Philip Park is near Beach 1 and the food stalls. It affords simple relaxation for families with kids. There is a roller skating rink here, while bird watching enthusiasts may be tempted to bring their binoculars along to spot colourful winged natives like the pied hornbill.

3. Tanjung Aru Perdana Park

There is another park nearby known for its lake and peaceful landscaped surroundings – the Tanjung Aru Perdana Park at Hone Place.

It boasts a musical fountain at the centre of the park. The fountain light shows come on three times, between 7pm and 8.40pm, and the visuals, along with the timed music, are a nighttime attraction in the area. The park has jogging tracks going around the lake, and there are also playgrounds and cafes. After you’re done with the show, take a stroll back to Tanjung Aru beach for a late night supper.

4. Tanjung Aru Library

The Tanjung Aru Library opened in 2019 and offers five floors of reads catering to all ages. This modern striking building is huge, a space of 62,000 square feet, and the exterior is adorned with indigenous ethnic motifs.

The library is in Plaza Tanjung Aru beside Perdana Park and children as well as adults can find some reading material to while away a lazy afternoon.

5. Tanjung Aru Railway Station

The railways in Malaysia have a very interesting history and North Borneo is no exception. To relive some of the old days of steam engines, get aboard the North Borneo Railway at Tanjung Aru Rail Station .

The classically-styled old world interior of the coaches is reminiscent of a bygone Colonial era, significantly the early 1900s. The British Vulcan steam locomotive is around 123 years old. The engine’s power is derived from burning logs and the whistle and puffs of steam make for great Instagram shots.

The five-hour journey takes passengers along Sabah’s verdant countryside past villages, a forest reserve, plantations and along the beautiful coastline. The train stops at Kinarut Town where the Tien Shi Temple with its beautiful statues can be visited, then Papar town for its market and old-fashioned shophouses. Here’s the chance to go bargain hunting or just enjoy it as a spot for people watching.

The rustic experience aboard the steam train includes a light breakfast and an old school tiffin carrier lunch served by train stewards in spotless colonial era uniforms.

Launched in 2000, The North Borneo Railway, the oldest running steam train in North Borneo, makes its trips twice a week. Alongside this experience, there is also the North Borneo Yacht Charter’s luxury vessel, Puteri Sutera, available for charter by the hour.

6. Sorinsim Waterfall

If you can’t get enough of watery pursuits, take a 131km road trip from Kota Kinabalu to Sorinsim (or Serinsim) Waterfall. Swimming in the crystal clear cold mountain water, jungle trekking and caving are among the activities popular here.

Serinsim substation lies in the northern part of Kinabalu Park, which stands as the  first UNESCO World Heritage Site of Malaysia. So the substation is a nature park 15km away from Kota Marudu town. Experience the diversity of rainforest flora and fauna. The third highest mountain, Mount Tambuyukon, is here. It rises to 2,579 metres above sea-level. There’s also a long cave called Bat Cave. This adventure requires a Sabah Park guide.

As for accommodation, available here are hostels, chalets and camping facilities.

Eating Options At Tanjung Aru

By evening, Beach 1 and some of Beach 2 are usually thronging with people visiting the open air food court, stalls and eateries. As the sea breeze blows in, the aroma of grilled meats on skewers (the delectable satay), barbecued chicken wings, steamed corn, stir fried cockles, noodles… the list of eats is endless… mingle in the air.

You’ll find the tables and seats being quickly occupied. Even the wide selection of fruit juice concoctions can leave one scratching the head when deciding which to drink. They’re all delicious! Pick your fruits and customise your drinks, or settle for one of the vendor’s creative mixes.

For more formal dining, the restaurants and cafes dotted along the seafront serve fresh catch from the sea in a variety of cooking styles. You can even choose your own seafood catch at certain places which have mini aquariums with live fish. Eateries and hawkers here stay open till late at night.

Shopping At Tanjung Aru – Malls And Markets

Tanjung Aru Plaza is a 20-minute walk from Beach 1 in Tanjung Aru. It has a Korean supermarket, a reflexology centre and various other outlets.

For a more trendy shopping outing, venture into the city where there’s Imago The Mall at KK Times Square. Here, the selection of international food franchises and restaurants offer familiarity and variety. The shopping is appealing with branded clothing and jewellery stores, IT and electronic outlets and many more, featuring all the trappings of a modern mall.

The small wet market at Tanjung Aru caters to local residents. You may get seafood and dry provisions here, if you’re up to cooking a meal or two at your airbnb, if it has kitchen facilities.

1. KK Chocolate House

Meanwhile chocolate lovers may wish to take a 2.7km drive from Beach 1 to Cocoa Kingdom – KK Chocolate House at Lorong Bunga Telur, where local cocoa is used to make a variety of chocolate.

Learn about the history of cocoa plantations in Malaysia as you take a guided tour. Children will be drawn to the interactive activities. After all the education is digested, take a breather at the café or stop by the souvenir shop for your pick of chocolate goodies.

2. Gaya Sunday Street Market

The Gaya Street Sunday Market on Gaya Street at the city centre is particularly delightful for browsers and serious shoppers. It has interesting wares including local delicacies, handicraft, clothing, antiques and unique items.

3. Filipino Market

The Filipino Market at Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen is filled with food stalls. Your shopping expedition should not miss the Handicraft Market that is located on the other side for the hall. They offer a range of affordable souvenir items such as pearl jewellery, sarongs, shawls, native musical instruments, blowpipes, hats, bags and trinkets.

Put your bargaining skills to the test!

4. Jesselton Artisan Market

At Jalan Riverson 1, Kota Kinabalu. It is a curated showcase of KK’s artisans creations, contemporary and traditional. Delight in the well-crafted jewellery, artwork, innovative and comically named food creations, charming clothing and much more.

Local musicians add to the rhythm of this upbeat mix.

North Borneo / East Coast Borneo and Southern Philippines no longer appear on the list of dangerous water perils and there is no need for a special permission by insurance underwriters to enter, stopover or operate a vessel in this area or any port listed in this areas. The yachts are no longer required to pay additional and costly premiums for this purpose.

JWC Insurance is the well known for regulating insurance underwriting ruling for vessels operating round the globe. Prior to the positive changes from the underwriter’s committee of insurance underwriters, as many as 80% of APS potential clients thanked Alvin for his honesty, but turned away from Borneo due to restrictions by the insurance underwriters.

The updated bulletin changes all of that and is well timed as cruising seasons starts soon, notes Alvin, adding: “North & East Coast Sabah Borneo coastline is now deleted from Joint War Committee (JWC) of high risk perils area zoning in late December 2015 by the JWC committee review. Not it’s time to visit ‘paradise’ in a safe and peaceful ESSCOM Sabah security zone cruising heaven within the world coral triangle zone.”

Palm Beach International Boat Show

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show.

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero ,  the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north.

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

north borneo yacht charter

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

north borneo yacht charter

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests.

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

north borneo yacht charter

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

north borneo yacht charter

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

north borneo yacht charter

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

north borneo yacht charter

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million.

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

north borneo yacht charter

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

north borneo yacht charter

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.

Heesen ‘Book Ends’

north borneo yacht charter

Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. The yacht is listed through Ocean Independence for 42 million Euro, or about $45.7 million.
