Running from 28 September to 1 October, the Monaco Yacht Show 2022 will be attracting a fleet of superyachts and thousands of attendees to the Côte d'Azur for the 31st edition of the prestigious boat show.

For four days, Port Hercules will be a hive of activity as thousands of prospective clients and industry players descend on the French Riviera to explore what’s on display on the water and along the stands. Hundreds of exhibitors will be showing off their products and services, with top shipyards , brokerage houses and marine and luxury lifestyle stalls in attendance, along with brand-new areas being unveiled at this year's show.

What’s in store at this year’s show?

This year the show will unveil its brand-new Adventure Area and Sustainability Hub, alongside its popular Design & Innovation Hub and dockside areas committed to the exhibition of superyachts and tenders.

Sustainability Hub

With a renewed focus on sustainability and environmental protection initiatives, the Monaco Yacht Show 2022 will be unveiling its brand new exhibition space dedicated to the research and development of sustainable solutions in yachting.

The Sustainability Hub will also host a variety of exhibitions relating to green renewable solutions and pro-environmental projects in yachting.

Yacht Design and Innovation Hub

Complementing the Sustainability Area will be the popular Yacht Design and Innovation Hub, where the world’s most renowned yacht designers convene to showcase their latest projects, with various presentations on design and eco-responsible projects in yachting taking place in a conference room upstairs (free access). This year, the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub also welcomes the historic exhibitors of the Designer Gallery along the Louis Chiron bend of Port Hercules.

Adventure Area

Another new zone for 2022, visitors to the Adventure Area will find a huge array of tenders, all-terrain vehicles, nautical gadgets and equipment. These will be showcased in conjunction with a wide range of activities and services targeting the up-coming generation of superyacht clientele in response to the increase in demand by discerning yacht travellers seeking ever-more thrilling adventures and unique yachting experiences.

Dockside Area

The new Adventure Area will be located within the Dockside Area, home to the afloat exhibition of motor yachts and tenders on the Quai Antoine 1er, Port Hercule.

Please note that the Dockside area is only accessible to Discover, Sapphire and press passes on Wednesday September 28, with access to the general public from Thursday onwards.

Sailing Yacht Area

As in previous years, this area will be situated along the Quai l’Hirondelle, where visitors will be able to step aboard some of the most innovative and technologically advanced sailing yachts in the world, as well as meeting some of the esteemed builders and designers who help to create the magic.

Sapphire Experience

Introduced for the first time last year, the Sapphire Experience is a bespoke tour program for visitors interested in renting or buying a yacht, with a concierge team dedicated to creating a bespoke program of events tailored to take advantage of all there is to experience at the show in true VIP fashion; including scheduled visits on board yachts, attendance at gala evenings or private cocktails on board various luxury vessels. There is also an official Sapphire tender and courtesy car service.

In addition, there are dedicated VIP entrances and lounges for convenience and relaxation throughout the show.

How to get around the Monaco Yacht Show 2022

The show takes place entirely in Port Hercules, but there will also be a number of yachts available for viewing at anchor outside the port. A water taxi is available throughout the show, with seven pick-up and drop-off points conveniently located across the marina.

The official opening times for the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show are: 10.30am-6.30pm every day, except on Saturday when the doors open at 10am and close at 6pm.

What is the official MYS 2022 superyacht lineup?

Currently, with over 130 yachts set to attend this year’s show, including 74 yachts making their debuts in Monaco, the show promises plenty of standout vessels available to view.

One of the most exciting new yachts will be Lurssen’s 115m/378ft motor yacht AHPO . A recent addition to the charter fleet, she will be drawing in plenty of attention with her Nuvolari Lenard exterior styling and palatial interiors.

On the same dock, Golden Yacht’s latest offering in the shape of 88m (289ft) superyacht Project X will also be causing a buzz. Freshly delivered, show-goers shouldn’t miss the opportunity to step on board to admire her beautiful Massari-designed interiors, as well as her 7.5-meter by 3-meter glass-enclosed swimming pool on her aft main deck and vast beach club featuring comfortable lounging area and bar, alongside a wellness suite with Hammam and Finnish Sauna.

Another star of the show will be the 85m (279ft) luxury explorer yacht VICTORIOUS , who wowed visitors last year with her distinctive sleek lines culminating in a 2-meter bowsprit and impressive array of charter-rich features and family-friendly amenities, not to mention the luxury Rolls Royce perched on her helideck bow!

The 75m (247ft) superyacht KENSHÕ will also be making waves for those keen to experience her zen-calm interiors up-close. Launched earlier this year, the innovative vessel redefines the concept of space and layout, providing guests with the ultimate luxurious platform to relax, entertain and socialize onboard.

Where to eat at the Monaco Yacht Show 2022

In Port Hercules, there are a variety of options available for snacks and refreshments, including the Upper Deck Lounge bar & restaurant run by the renowned Fairmont Monte-Carlo, as well as the Sapphire Lounge – a VIP bar and dining experience open exclusively to Sapphire badge holders – both located near the Parvis Piscine entrance.

Monaco itself has no shortage of restaurants to suit every occasion and palate during the show. For something more casual, Rue Princesse Caroline is lined with different restaurants that are well-suited to a light bite.

In the evenings, COYA Monte Carlo is where the in-crowd head for Latin-American fusion and a warm reception. The cocktail menu is expansive, so be sure to try one of their specialties and soak up the buzzy vibes as the evening wears on.

If it’s a sophisticated meal you’re after, Nobu is the ultimate choice. Expect a luxurious backdrop, a refined Japanese menu and a sensational taste experience among fellow show-goers.

Where to party after the Monaco Yacht Show 2022

As ever, Buddha-Bar will be one of the most popular venues for post-show partying in Monaco. The restaurant-bar crossover is a regular stop-off for those looking to dine and dance to the soundtrack of live DJ sets.

Twiga has a similar vibe, with a stellar menu coupled with an unrivalled club scene later in the evenings. Expect Methusalems of champagne topped with sparklers, dazzling entertainment and a no-holds-barred party vibe.

Twiga will be hosting plenty of Monaco Yacht Show-themed parties over the course of the show, so you’d be remiss not to pay the venue a visit, even if it’s just for a cocktail on the terrace.

For a true taste of French Riviera party life, look no further than Jimmy’z. This iconic club will be in full swing over the course of the Monaco Yacht Show, and will be amping up the entertainment with live performances from dance troupes and deck-spinning DJs.

Where to relax after the Monaco Yacht Show 2022

After the show, take the time to unwind and soak up the last of the Mediterranean sun.

Nikki Beach Monte Carlo is still going strong on the roof of the Fairmont Hotel, and offers poolside lounging and a summery soundtrack throughout the day, offset by spectacular views over Port Hercules and the yachts at anchor opposite the marina.

A little outside Monaco in the small town of Eze lies one of the best-kept secrets in the South of France. Anjuna Plage occupies a thin sliver of beach, and boasts a premier restaurant, boutique shop and a laid-back vibe that makes it a fan favourite. Best accessed by yacht, it also has a roster of A-list clientele.

Where to visit after the Monaco Yacht Show 2022

The French Riviera is one of the most beautiful regions in the Mediterranean and has no end of things to see and do. In Monaco, visitors can explore the decadent Monte Carlo casino, browse the Private Collection of Antique Cars of H.S.H. Prince Rainier III or admire the incredible selection of marine life at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco.

Afterwards, stop by neighbouring Menton to visit Mirazur, a restaurant that was named the Best in the World for 2019.  Then, pay a visit to the Val Rahmen Exotic Gardens for an afternoon of botanical bliss.

monaco yacht show hotels

Head over to Nice for a day of sightseeing and walking the cobbled streets of the city, taking the time to explore the famous Matisse Museum and the pink palace of Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild.

Those looking to travel even further afield can stop by the spa at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes or take a boat ride out to the Lérins Islands  outside the bay of Cannes , where you will find the famous Abbey and the superyacht hotspot of La Guerite, a beach club and restaurant on the island.

Monaco travel advice: The best luxury hotels in Monaco

Looking for the best hotels in Monaco to book a room in? If you're visiting Monaco for the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show this September, take a look at these top hotels offering luxury accommodation in the principality.

Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo

Twenty paces from the Casino de Monte-Carlo, the Hôtel de Paris is such a well-worn pied-à-terre for high rollers that their superstitions have left a physical mark: the lobby's bronze statue of Louis XIV riding has had the horse’s right knee shined by the generations who have rubbed it for luck.

The hotel began welcoming guests just a year after the opening of the Casino de Monte-Carlo in 1863, and was designed to rival Parisian institutions like the Hôtel du Louvre and the Grand Hôtel. The glitterati arrived on cue, US President Grant rubbing epaulettes with Grand Duke “Serge” of Russia, while artists Verne, Verdi, and Dumas feasted their imaginations on her belle époque beauty.

Extravagance was the only rule in the hotel’s early days. Beams were installed in the ceiling of one room so Empress Elizabeth of Austria could practise the trapeze before bed, and one grand duke always arrived with 50 gardeners, who would work through the night so that he could open his window on to a new garden every morning. Sumptuous balls were a house speciality, from Errol Flynn’s 1950 wedding to the 1956 marriage of Prince Rainier III and Grace Kelly.

These glamorous ghosts are part of what has kept the gloss on the Hôtel de Paris. Twenty-first-century starlets and moguls tread the same tiles as belle époque bounders and 50s film stars. The hotel lets guests dive into its illustrious history through its beautifully kept marble halls, characterful antiques and suites named after famous guests, such as the Princess Grace Diamond Suite with costs starting from €40,000 a night.

Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo

In Edith Wharton’s 1905 novel The House of Mirth her character is drawn to this Monte Carlo hideaway, with its “exotic coquetry of architecture, the studied tropicality of the gardens”. The Metropole today remains Monaco’s snuggest sanctuary. Much of this is smoke and mirrors – it is less than 100 metres from Casino Square – but artfully composed box hedges, and an extremely long drive, give it the feeling of a secret garden. The organic atmosphere is enhanced in the lobby with fantastical flower arrangements.

Since it opened in 1889, guests have felt comfortable enough at the Metropole to indulge their whims. The concierge once had to buy a metre of grass so a guest could practise golf in his suite, and on another occasion, staff used a crane to lift a throne to the Presidential Suite for a visiting king.

The hotel was renovated and reopened in 2004, redesigned by Jacques Garcia, Karl Lagerfeld and Didier Gomez. The resulting atmosphere is honey coloured, velvety, deeply upholstered and low-lit. The monolithic lobby bar feels like somewhere Howard Carter might have sipped his last G&T before setting off to find King Tut. Upstairs, three signature suites – Prestige, Azur and Carré d’Or – cater to different tastes, including one with a Philippe Starck bathroom and another with a view of the Grand Prix circuit.

Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo

The Hermitage is a neo-classical glamour queen of a hotel. If Marie Antoinette had been born two centuries later she would have delivered her bon mots from the balcony of a Hermitage suite – and approved of the complimentary Ladurée macarons and fat white roses. Modern divas from Kim Kardashian to Lindsay Lohan meet journalists in the nooks of the hotel’s marble wedding cake of a lobby before retreating into its hushed, pearly-tiled maze of corridors.

The Hermitage was built in 1900, literally in the shadow of the Hôtel de Paris, but ready to compete. The Salle Belle Epoque ballroom was designed by painter and orientalist Gabriel Ferrier; Gustave Eiffel penned the glass dome of the Winter Garden.

Fantastical parties here have attracted jet setters since the jet was invented; for example, the opening gala of the Bar of the Scorpions (now the Crystal Bar), held in 1969 on Princess Grace’s 40th birthday – her Zodiac sign was Scorpio and she invited only other Scorpios. The Princess was dressed by Balenciaga in a black ballgown and welcomed Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, who arrived in an oversized cape with two scorpions embroidered on it.

Renovated in the 1970s and early 2000s, the rooms are romantic, with rococo furniture upholstered in pastel silks and velvets. But the 361-square-metre Diamond Suite Penthouse is real princess territory. Decorated in taupe, aubergine and gold, it features two sprawling terraces, three bedrooms, three living rooms, two dressing rooms, a playroom and 360-degree views of the principality.

Views are the hotel’s greatest luxury, and the Crystal Terrace is a good spot to enjoy them with a cocktail in hand. A few steps away, the Michelin-starred Yannick Alléno restaurant serves stylish cuisine and is one of the best restaurants to visit in Monte-Carlo during the Monaco Yacht Show .

Monte-Carlo Beach Hotel

The low, sprawling art deco building of The Monte-Carlo Beach hotel was finished in 1929 to lure in high-end summer tourism and the American gossip columnist Elsa Maxwell was drafted in to fill it with fashionable people. She was on good terms with jet sets from Cairo to New York (she introduced Maria Callas to Aristotle Onassis) and thanks to her the ’20s roared well into the next decade at Monte-Carlo Beach.

A 2009 makeover from Parisian designer India Mahdavi has returned the hotel’s style to its chic, deco prime. The two-bedroom Sunshine Suite features a spa pool and private terrace – but all the rooms are fabulous, with muted colours, stylised prints and “strong visual references from the Riviera of the 30s”, as Mahdavi put it. It’s easy to imagine the crimped starlets and bow-tied bounders lounging around the pool today. Indeed, Leonardo DiCaprio has been spotted keeping up his Gatsby role, smoking cigars and playing poker under the cabanas of the Monte-Carlo Beach Club, while Beyoncé occasionally zips in by yacht.

The hotel is not strictly speaking in Monaco – it’s just over the eastern border in France – but this location makes it the bolthole of choice for visitors who want a break from the principality’s pneumatic glamour. One Michelin-starred Elsa, its bright restaurant and breezy terrace, is a great lunch escape during the Monaco Yacht Show.

Villa La Vigie

So it’s not a hotel, and technically it’s just over the border in France, but Villa la Vigie is the most exclusive address around. Sitting high on the Pointe de la Veille promentary, its vistas sweep from Monaco to Roquebrune-Cap-Martin (the views are so good that the Germans seized it as an observation post in the Second World War).

The neoclassical monolith was built in 1902 by the English baronet William Ingram, owner of The Illustrated London News and a liberal politician. He held lavish parties, where his rare animals roamed the gardens and tropical birds fluttered freely. Forty years later the Nazis were more troublesome tenants, digging trenches and planting mines in the gardens to protect their prize. When they left, La Vigie was renovated and the lush gardens restored (and de-mined).

The villa’s most famous resident was Karl Lagerfeld, who set up camp each summer from the late ’80s to the early ’90s with a brigade of supermodels and fashion royalty. Today the villa can be rented for holidays on a weekly or monthly basis.  Sleek interior décor in pale tones and sumptuous fabrics allow the elegant architecture to shine, while tall windows flood the place with light.

There are six bedrooms, two dressing rooms and a 237-square-metre terrace that wraps around two sides of the building; there is no finer spot on the Riviera for a sundowner. Privacy is a major draw for high net worth visitors, so the private road and forest-cloaked gardens are a big plus, as is the sea-view spa pool. An electric car will whisk you to nearby Monte-Carlo Beach Club, where a private 10-person tent on the beach awaits La Vigie guests. Mention that you’re staying here if you want to raise some eyebrows.

The 5 Best Hotels to Stay in During the Monaco Yacht Show

These are the most luxurious spots for your stay in monte carlo.

monaco yacht show hotels

Monaco may be one of the smallest countries in the world, but the tiny principality in the south of France is synonymous with glamour. The most popular time to visit is long after the whirlwind of the  Cannes Film Festival , when stars flock to the spot in the French Riviera for a bit of relaxation time—it also happens to coincide with the Grand Prix.

Aside from luxurious automobiles, Monaco is known for gambling and casinos, of course, but also for the International Monaco Yacht Show —it’s a four-day event where yachting enthusiasts flock to the glitzy locale, checking out the newest superyacht launches and the most magnificent yachts for sale.

This year, it will take place from September 27 to September 30. Don’t worry if you haven’t been able to nab a spot on a James Bond-esque superyacht—even though Monaco isn’t the largest scene in the south of France, it has a plethora of lavish, opulent hotels. Below, see our top picks for where to stay during the upcoming yacht show in Monaco.

Hotel Hermitage Monte-Carlo

monaco yacht show hotels

The Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo was built at the beginning of the 20th century, and overlooks the Monte Carlo harbor and the Mediterranean. Among the many attributes of the Belle Époque-style hotel is the dome in the hotel’s Winter Garden, which was designed by Gustave Eiffel. The Hermitage is comprised of 278 rooms, designed by Pierre Yves Rochon, including 20 suites, 54 junior suites and 14 Diamond suites.

The most lavish of all the über luxurious Diamond suites is the aptly named “Princely Diamond Suite,” which has three bedrooms, a living room, three loggias and three dressing rooms, as well as three private terraces and a picturesque view of the sea—i t starts at  29,500  euros a night. The Hermitage is home to a Michelin star restaurant, Le Vistamar, as well as Le Limun Bar and Crystal Bar. The hotel also offers direct, underground access to the Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo spa, which has men’s and women’s hammams and sentoriums, all situated around a pool decorated with a seashell ceiling.

Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo

monaco yacht show hotels

The Hotel Metropole is also in the Belle Époque style, and was originally built in 1886. Its most recent restoration was in fall 2003, and it reopened in the summer 2004. There are 126 rooms, including 64 suites suites, all designed by Jacques Garcia and done in a Mediterranean aesthetic. The most lavish is the penthouse, the 2,500-square-foot Suite Carré d’Or, which is decorated with Louis XVI furniture and artwork, and has a private terrace offering guests 180-degree views of Monte Carlo and the Mediterranean.

The hotel has serious fashion clout, too—Karl Lagerfeld designed the pool area in 2012, which is now known as Odyssey. It has a fresco-style glass installation around a saltwater pool, along with gardens, private cabanas and a pool house with a restaurant. Odyssey is covered during the winter, but al fresco the rest of the year—it’s available exclusively to hotel guests and members of the hotel’s Spa Metropole by Givenchy. In fact, the marble bedecked spa recently reopened after a long renovation, designed by Didier Gomez.

Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort

monaco yacht show hotels

The Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort is one of the newer hotels in Monaco; it opened in 2006. It’s in the Larvotto area, and is a bit more casual than many of the other Monaco lodgings. But the less formal atmosphere doesn’t interfere with the glamour of the hotel, which has 334 rooms, of which 22 are suites. The swimming pool “lagoon” has a solarium, gardens and jacuzzi, and there’s also an indoor swimming pool.

The hotel has multiple restaurants, including the Michelin star Blue Bay, which has a bar on the terrace with views of the Mediterranean. It even has its own in-house casino, the Monte-Carlo Bay Casino. Plus, it’s just a few steps away from the Monaco Yacht Show.

Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo

monaco yacht show hotels

The Hôtel de Paris might be the most famous of all the resorts in Monaco, but it’s currently undergoing major renovations, as it has been since 2014. It’s expected to completely reopen in 2019, but if you’re totally set on staying in the luxe spot, don’t fret—a small number of the rooms are being kept open, until the hotel shuts down entirely for two months this October.

The hotel originally opened in 1863, and is also known for its incredible wine cellar, which includes nearly 600,000 expensive bottles. The hotel is also very close to the legendary  Casino de Monte-Carlo.  James Bond fans might be particularly fond of this hotel, considering it has made appearances in both  Never Say Never Again  and  Goldeneye.

Fairmont Monte Carlo

monaco yacht show hotels

The Fairmont is one of the largest hotels in Monaco, with a total of 602 rooms. It was entirely redone in 2009, and it’s a bit sleeker, more modern and less traditional than many of the other lodgings. There are three restaurants (including a Nobu) as well as a bar in the hotel, plus the Fairmont Spa, complete with a fitness center and rooftop pool, and an in-house casino.

The Fairmont resort is also where you’ll find Nikki Beach Monte Carlo —it’s located on the rooftop, where you can soak in the views of Monaco and the Mediterranean Sea, all while lounging with a glass of champagne and dozing off underneath the sun.

The Ultimate Guide to the Monaco Yacht Show

Yachts in Hercule Harbour in Monaco

The Monaco Yacht Show is a four-day event that takes place each year in Monaco’s deepwater port, Port Hercules, and is Europe’s biggest in-water display of superyachts of over 20 metres long. At any time of the year, impressive yachts are moored in the principality’s harbour, but this annual trade show really does take luxury yachting to a whole new level.

125 one-off superyachts feature in the monaco boat show.

The Monaco Yacht Show was started in 1991 by the French entrepreneur Maurice Cohen and was most recently acquired by British event organiser Informa in 2005. Today, the show has grown to curate an exhibition of 125 superyachts, welcoming over 550 companies from the yachting industry and unveiling 45 new launches in a worldwide premiere.

The Professional Pass is for professionals of the nautical and luxury markets and costs a cool €950, while the Sapphire Experience doesn’t come with a provided price tag, which gives you an idea of the kind of exclusive visit it is. It is reserved for future superyacht charterers or owners and more details and contact information are available on the event’s website .

Something for car lovers, too

In 2016, the Monaco Yacht Show introduced Car Deck, an exhibition space within the boat show to showcase luxury cars. Manufacturers have included Lamborghini, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Aston Martin and more. Take a look at the yacht show’s layout for information on entrances, lounges, refreshment areas and more.

Arrive by helicopter

In for a penny, in for a pound. Unsurprisingly, one of the most popular ways to travel to Monaco is by helicopter, which could be just what you’re looking for if planning an exclusive trip to the Monaco Yacht Show. Monacair links the Nice airport to Monaco in just seven minutes. In true Monaco fashion, seven minutes will set you back €130!

Monaco’s train station connects with Nice’s main station, too, which provides a slightly more affordable option and of course, you can drive to the principality, as long as the underground parking systems don’t put you off.

I spent 2 days at the Monaco Yacht Show, and never in my entire life have I felt so out of place

  • I attended this year's Monaco Yacht Show , a glamorous event for yachting industry insiders and wealthy VIPs looking to buy or charter yachts.
  • Monaco is a tiny yet lavishly wealthy city-state on the French Riviera where there's a zero poverty rate and about one-third of the population are millionaires .
  • I've never felt as out of place as I did during my time at the yacht show and hanging out in Monaco.
  • From feeling underdressed at a glitzy kickoff gala where everyone was wearing designer gowns to staying in an Airbnb almost 15 miles away rather than at a luxury hotel, I felt keenly aware that I was neither a millionaire nor a VIP guest of the yacht show.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories .

Insider Today

Each year in late September, thousands of people converge on a tiny city-state on the French Riviera to see some of the world's largest, most expensive, and most innovative superyachts.

The Monaco Yacht Show is one of the yachting industry's premier events. This year's show displayed more than $4.3 billion worth of yachts with an average price of about $41 million. The show is attended by industry insiders such as shipbuilders, designers, and brokers, as well as affluent people from all around the world who are looking to buy or charter a yacht.

This year, I was one of about 30,000 people who attended the Monaco Yacht Show.

Read more: Here's what it's like to attend the Monaco Yacht Show — in a country where the poverty rate is 0 — when you are not a millionaire

Monaco is a country smaller than New York City's Central Park , yet it's one of the most lavishly wealthy nations in the world. An estimated one-third of Monaco residents are millionaires , and the GDP per capita is $166,021 , the highest in the world after Lichtenstein. And according to the CIA World Factbook, no portion of Monaco's population lives below the poverty line .

As a journalist with a decidedly non-millionaire salary, I expected to feel out of place in Monaco — but I couldn't know to what extent until I got there.

Lamborghinis, Chanel, and Goyard: The wealth in Monaco is not exactly subtle

In Monte Carlo, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Range Rovers, BMWs, and other high-end cars were everywhere I looked. Seemingly every woman I saw was carrying a designer handbag, whether it was Chanel, Louis Vuitton, or the elusive but even more esteemed Goyard .

Indeed, most of the shopping in the district is catered to millionaires. There's Métropole Shopping Monte-Carlo, an upscale underground shopping center with 80 high-end boutiques, steps from the famous casino. And in the other direction are shops like Cartier, Céline, Prada, and Balenciaga.

The only non-designer stores I saw in Monte Carlo were a Zara and a Nike boutique.

Nightly rates at the trifecta of luxury hotels in Monaco start at about $400

My first night in Monaco, I got to stay at the opulent Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo, where rooms start at $417 and cost upwards of $8,500 for the most luxurious suites. The hotel sits in the city's glitzy Carré d'Or district that surrounds Monte Carlo's Casino Square, named after the famous Casino de Monte Carlo, where gamblers have won more than $317 million over the past year .

My night at Hotel Metropole, with its five-star amenities and central location, was a luxurious experience made possible only by the media discount the hotel offered my company. At Monaco's other hotels, such as Hotel Hermitage and Hotel de Paris, nightly rates start at almost $400.

The rest of the week, I stayed in the nearby French city of Nice in an Airbnb that cost less than $100 a night. From there, I commuted about 30 minutes into Monaco, which drastically changed my experience. Every evening, I had to walk to the Monaco train station, ride the train 20 minutes back to Nice, and then take a 10-minute Uber ride (or walk 35 minutes) back to my Airbnb. On a couple of occasions, I had to make that journey twice in one day.

With the trains stopping well before midnight, this made a night out in Monaco nearly impossible unless I wanted to spend €90 — almost $100 — on a taxi to take me the 14 miles back to Nice.

Getting around is exhausting for those without deep pockets

VIP guests of the yacht show — those with provable interest and means to buy or charter a yacht — could hitch rides around Monaco thanks to the yacht show's courtesy cars.

For the rest of us, transportation was trickier. While Monaco is small, it's full of steep hills, cobblestone streets, and many, many stairs, making walking everywhere exhausting. Uber does not exist in Monaco, and I learned the hard way that the elusive taxis are as expensive as everything else in Monaco.

When I checked out of Hotel Metropole, I asked the hotel to call me a taxi to take me to the train station, so I could check in and drop off my luggage at my Airbnb in Nice. That was when I learned of the €15 (about $16.50) minimum charge for taking a taxi anywhere within Monaco, even a three-minute drive to the train station. As a reminder, Monaco spans just 0.78 square miles .

And taking a taxi to somewhere outside Monaco will cost you €90.

Monaco does have city buses , but they never showed up as an option on Google Maps — which I, and many people, rely on to navigate a city these days — and they stop running at 9:30 p.m. On weekends, a night bus runs until 4 a.m., but as it wouldn't take me back to Nice, that didn't help me much.

I felt this lack of transportation options acutely throughout my stay, especially after I attended a ritzy kickoff gala the night before the yacht show. After the gala, private cars and yacht-show courtesy cars were parked outside the venue to drive VIPs the four or five minutes back to their hotels like the Metropole.

But as a non-VIP and a non-millionaire unable to shell out $100 for a taxi back to Nice, I walked uphill and up seemingly endless stairs to the train station, finally making it back to my Airbnb over an hour after leaving the party.

Monaco really is a playground for millionaires

Other parts of Monaco seemed a bit more low-key, but around the Monte Carlo district and Port Hercules, where all the hustle and bustle for the yacht show was taking place, the city was an exhibition of lavish wealth.

I felt strangely relieved to get back to Nice every night — back to what felt like the "real world," with its regular people not decked in head-to-toe designer duds or driving Ferraris.

While it was fun getting a peek into the glamorous Monaco lifestyle, the outrageously high prices —and the presence of so many people who can actually afford them — made it clear that Monaco is not quite meant for someone like me.

Monaco Yacht Show 2024

Event information

Monaco Yacht Show is not just another fancy event. It is the divine incarnation of the faschinating superyacht world, which takes place at the one-of-a-kind Port Hercules of the Principality of Monaco. The event attracts yacht owners, future superyacht charterers or purchasers and of course decision-makers in the yachting and luxury industries. Monaco Yacht Show present 120 unique superyachts every year, of which 40 new launches are unveiled in a fascinating world-wide debut!

The numbers behing the 2023 edition of Monaco Yacht Show are more than impressive: 36 400 participants, 14 displayed sailing yachts, 90 m (the size of the largest new yacht at the 2018 edition), 3 billion Euros assessed value of the MYS yachts, 49.5 m average length of the yachts on display, 40 new builds launched at the show, 50 % of the fleet is less than 2 years, 40 tenders and toys displayed at Quai Jarlan and Quai Antoine Ier, 12 prestigious cars exhibited at the Car Deck and two helicoptes exhibited at Quai Antoine Ier and Parvis Piscine.

It goes without saying that Monte Carlo is an expensive place. Naturally, Monaco Yacht Show adds a few extra Euros to the hotel rates, which along with the limited availability turns the process of finding the most suitable hotel room at the most reasonable price into a tiresome experience. Expo-Hotels.com has this trade fair covered as well - simply send us your requirements and let us present to you our unbeatable hotel rates!
