Fountaine Pajot Mahé 36

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: May 12, 2011

Fountiane Pajot Mahe’ 36

Even though it’s the smallest offering in Fountaine Pajot’s line of performance cruising catamarans, there’s a lot going on in the aptly named Mahé 36 Evolution, which replaces the company’s previous 36-footer while introducing a series of evolutionary changes. Fittingly, the most obvious and important ones are above deck and relate to comfort, speed, safety, and sail handling.

Last year, the entire Fountaine Pajot fleet, including the Mahé, upgraded their collective sail plans with the introduction of the square-topped mainsails prevalent aboard big racing multihulls and America’s Cup boats. It increases sail area where it provides the greatest benefit—aloft. In the case of the 36, the mainsail is stashed in a handy dedicated “stowaway” sail bag on the boom when doused or reefed.

But the biggest change to the Mahé 36 is the all-encompassing hard dodger that completely shades the cockpit and addresses several issues at once. Incorporated into the design of the dodger is an innovative molded helmsman’s seat (with room for two) that provides the skipper with a clear view of the sails and surroundings and ready access to all sail controls. In addition to sheets and reefing lines, this includes the optional electric halyard winch and the revamped and at-hand traveler controls and clutches; the key component to mainsail trim on a cat, the wide traveler track is mounted well aft on the trailing edge of the dodger but cleverly led forward to within arm’s length of the driver.

The dual-purpose hardtop thus provides plenty of protection from the elements while at the same time offering a handy, comfortable seat—a neat trick carried out by a skilled design team.

While the hard dodger is certainly the most obvious new feature, there are lots of subtle additions as well. Topside, these include a couple of big hatches and also some lockers forward of the coachroof with enough room for an optional 4.5-kilowatt Panda generator. Down below in the galley, the fridge and oven have been repositioned, opening up a ton of storage space, and a useful island seat has been installed aft of the dining table in the central saloon. All in all, that’s a lot of evolved thinking.

“Go down to Miami and sail this 36-foot cat,” the boss said, pointing to a brochure. I liked the Miami part, but too many cruising cats only live up to the comfort side of the catamaran’s promise of speed and comfort to make me enthusiastic about the sailing. By the time I was finished with Fountaine Pajot’s Mahé 36, I liked the cat part of the assignment, too.

The famous raceboat-design team of Joubert/Nivelt designed the part of the Mahé 36 that goes through the water while O. Flahault Design was responsible for the “look” and the interior design. This combination of talents has led to a very slick little cruiser. The hulls’ waterline beam is narrow-a key factor in getting a cat through the water quickly-but above the water, the hulls flare out for increased living space and buoyancy.

Each hull is equipped with watertight bulkheads fore and aft, and construction is resin-infused fiberglass over a foam core, which makes for a strong, unsinkable structure. The 20-horsepower Volvo diesels with saildrives are located aft of the keels and rudders in their own compartments-keeping noise and fumes out of the living area. They drive the boat along at an easy 6 knots without having to goose the throttle.

There are steps in the back of each hull, with a swim ladder off the starboard one. A stainless-steel life-raft bracket is mounted off the back of the bridgedeck to port. The cockpit is large, with a table and L-shaped seats for four to port and a step up to a two-person helm seat to starboard. Directly in front of the helmsman is a pair of winches for trimming the sails.

The house is fairly high to give headroom within, and there are no attempts to streamline it; the forward windows are almost vertical for interior space and to minimize solar overheating. On deck by the mast, lockers house the anchor windlass and halyard tails. The halyards drop tidily through an aperture in the hatch and are ready when it’s time to drop the sails. A big, comfortable trampoline covers the area between the hulls all the way forward to the crossbeam.

A pair of large sliding doors opens the saloon and galley to the cockpit. Inside, surrounded by light-colored, satin-finished wood, a table for six has a great all-around view and converts to a double for extra guests. Aft to port is a (fiddleless) nav table. When I unscrewed the electric panel there, I found the wiring behind to be messy, but I assume that was because the boat was somewhat rushed to make the show on time. In each hull, there’s a cabin with a queen-sized berth aft and a head and shower with modern design elements (e.g., the sink is shaped like a bowl and sits atop the counter) forward. The alternative layout has three cabins, with an extra berth in place of the head in the port hull.

Off Key Biscayne, with 12 to 15 knots of wind, I got sold on this boat. Once the roachy main was hoisted on the 55-foot aluminum mast and the fractional overlapping jib was unfurled, the boat took off. I’d expected unexceptional performance, but the Mahé went to weather well and topped 9 knots on a close reach-this was on a 36-footer, remember. It handled the chop in the Gulf Stream like a much bigger boat, too. I found myself enjoying the sail in spite of my prejudices, and I was reluctant to head back into the marina at the end of the day. With the Mahé 36, Fountaine-Pajot and its designers have created a fun, comfortable, entry-level cruising cat that’s certain to lure more than a few monohull sailors into the grasp of its claws.

The Power Catamaran Compilation

  • By Yachting Staff
  • Updated: December 21, 2018

Power Catamarans have been growing leaps and bounds in popularity, and, in lengths and widths. And for good reason. These cruise-centric yachts offer homelike livability for avid travelers, are fuel efficient and are fairly intuitive to run. Power cats are popular in the bareboat charter market too, for these very reasons.

Here, we take a look at 12 catamarans ranging from a cruising-couple-size 36-footer to a 78-footer for friends, family and some more friends. And there are myriad power options: outboards, diesel inboards, hybrid or even all-solar power.

Fountaine Pajot MY44

fountain pajot my44

The Fountaine Pajot MY44 , a creation of Italian architect Pierangelo Andreani and French designer Daniel Andrieu, has a main deck that’s open from the aft-deck seating all the way forward to the starboard helm station. The sense of spaciousness is significant, for several reasons. First, four glass panels aft can all slide to port, creating an indoor-outdoor space with the aft deck and salon. In the salon, 32-inch-high windows extend for 12 feet down the sides of the yacht, with three sections per side, bringing in natural light along with the three forward panes that comprise the windshield. Finally, 6-foot-6-inch headroom provides vertical clearance, with a 21-foot-7-inch beam that adds interior roominess while keeping the yacht stable.

Silent-Yachts 55

The ideas about which solar panels, electric motors, inverters and the like to use — and more importantly, Michael Köhler says, how to configure them — became the basis for the brand Silent-Yachts. The company offers 55-, 64- and 79-foot catamarans that run on solar-electric propulsion. The Silent 55 premiered this fall, and the 64 is sold out for the next two years, Köhler says.

Horizon PC74

Horizon PC74

As founder and director of The Powercat Company, a Horizon Power Catamarans distributor, Stuart Hegerstrom had long believed that catamaran builders needed to design their yachts to more stylish standards.

“The boats were very boxy,” he says, based on his years of experience with cats in the charter market. He and his partner, Richard Ford, asked Horizon to produce models that had high-end finishes and looked good inside and out.

The Horizon team brought in mega-yacht designer JC Espinosa to work with its own craftsmen. The result aboard the Horizon PC74 is a catamaran with exterior styling, layout and functionality that should appeal to private and charter owners alike.

aquila 36

The Aquila 36 is a departure from her sisterships in that she is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran, but she also adheres to MarineMax’s philosophies.

With a single main living level from bow to stern and a beam of 14 feet 7 inches, the Aquila 36 is like a bowrider on steroids. She has seating that can handle 20 adults for outings and barbecues, and there are two staterooms below, one in each hull, for family weekending. The staterooms have nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads, stowage and 6-foot-6-inch headroom.

Lagoon Seventy 8

Lagoon is a division of Groupe Beneteau, the world’s largest builder of sailing yachts, and the Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat is a developmental sistership of its Seventy 7 super sailing cat. The Seventy series yachts are built at Construction Navale Bordeaux in France, which had to add a new yard to construct these catamarans because they require separate stern molds for the power and sail versions.

Horizon PC60

horizon pc60

To understand the Horizon PC60 power catamaran , you need to put aside preconceived notions about midsize yacht amenities. For example, main-deck master suites are the province of yachts over 100 feet length overall. Incorrect. This 60-footer has an elegant and spacious owner’s stateroom on the same level as the salon. If you want a 14-foot center console tender on a 60-foot yacht, you have to tow it. Wrong again. On the PC60, you hoist it onto the upper deck, no problem.

Lagoon 630 Motor Yacht

Lagoon 630 motoryacht

Fitted with the optional twin 300-horsepower Volvo Penta D4 diesels, the Lagoon 630 MY burns only 1.64 gph total at 6 knots, giving a theoretical range of 2,952 nautical miles with standard tankage of 793 gallons. Hull No. 1 had an optional 502-gallon tank, giving it transatlantic range.

Luxury, stability and economy are all hallmarks of Lagoon’s return to luxury motor yachts. If you can take a ride, it will be worth your time.

Fountaine Pajot MY 37

Fountaine Pajot MY 37

The Fountaine Pajot MY 37 easily accommodates the seafaring family with three- and four-stateroom options. In the three-cabin version, called Maestro, you’ll find an owner’s suite in the portside hull with a queen-size berth and en suite head. Two double-berth cabins and one more head are available for the kids. If your brood is bigger, the Quator setup features four double cabins with two heads.

The 37 is a traveler and can be powered with twin 150 hp or 220 hp Volvo Penta diesels. Top speed with the smaller engines is 17 knots, while it’s 20 knots with the bigger power plants. Interestingly, at 7 knots, the fuel consumption is the same, with either set of motors offering voyagers a 1 ,000-nm range.

Solarwave 64

Solarwave 64

Many yachts boast eco chops because they have a handful of solar panels that power the microwave or navigation lights. The Solarwave 64 , launched last summer, has the potential to run on sunshine alone. The vessel’s 42 solar panels generate 15 kW that are stored in batteries weighing about 1,300 pounds. They connect to electric motors.

Glider SS18

SS18, Glider Yachts

This British builder says it strives for design innovation and the Glider SS18 displays that DNA, the result of 8 years of research and development. She has a head-turning, catamaran hull form constructed from aluminum and composite materials. She is 60 feet LOA with a 17-foot beam, and has a relatively shallow 1-foot draft. Powered by quad Yamaha 300 hp outboards, she can reportedly reach 50 knots, and with her Stability Control System (SCS), should give a smooth ride while doing it.

Price Just Reduced!

We've had a very good year selling new boats.  But consequently we have too many trades.  So we're selling a terrific group of trade-in boats at the same price we pay for them!  Price Reduced $13,255.

Superior styling and exciting performance define this FP Mahe 36.  She is the only Mahe less than 10 years old available in all of North America!  She is clean and near perfect shape with only 450 hours on the engines.  Our trade survey is available.

Just took this Mahé 36 in trade customer moved up to larger Fountaine Pajot Catamaran.

This is a great opportunity to purchased a lightly used and well maintained Fountaine Pajot Mahe 36.

This 2014 Fountaine Pajot Mahe is an exciting cat to sail.  As with all the FP cats she is quicker than her competitors and is known for her superior styling.  In 2011 the successful Fountaine Pajot Mahe 36 was re-introduced as the Mahe "Evolution".  She includes many upgrades, the most dramatic being the attached hard bimini which defines all catamarans today.  She was the smallest boat in the FP line of big cruising cats.  However, she inherits a big cat feel.  When compared to other 35' catamarans you will notice the difference immediately upon stepping aboard.

The Mahe 36 performance characteristics come from a strong but much lighter weight hull utilizing infusion technology and composite bulkheads.  There's much less water slapping as she has a significantly higher bridge deck clearance, as much as 30% higher than her competitors.  Lower helm stations enabling lower booms yield a lower center of gravity improving both speed and stability.  As to style her superior design is evident to the beholder.  Her lines are graceful and sweeping, not abrupt and vertical.  Enjoy one level living with the salon on the same level as the cockpit-no climbing down into the "dungeon" as in monohulls.  Guests will be together with the helmspeople (2 person helmseat) whether inside or out.

She is a 3-cabin 1 head version: one hull is reserved for the master stateroom with attached lavatory. The other accommodates two double cabins, each with all the comforts needed for a relaxing cruise.

Please see full listing for additional options included.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Fountaine Pajot Plans Entry-Level, 36-Foot Power Cat

' src=

Reflecting the growing popularity of power catamarans, Fountaine Pajot just announced that it will build a new 36-footer, the MY 4.S, its entry-level cat aimed at the heart of the U.S. market.

The new 36 will replace the Fountaine Pajot 37, the French builder’s first power cat that it launched five years ago. (Almost 100 37s have been sold since then.) “We entered the power catamaran market five years ago, and we continue to invest and innovate in this sector with great potential,” said Romain Motteau, Fountaine Pajot’s general manager.

The new 36 does not have a flybridge, but Fountaine Pajot says it does have at least one-third more space inside and out than a monohull of the same length. And it shares the same slim bows and other design elements that mark all Fountaine Pajot power cats up to 67 feet.

The MY 4.S comes in three- or four-cabin versions. In the three-cabin option, a large owner’s stateroom occupies one hull, with an en suite head, and two guest cabins are in the other hull, sharing a head. The four-cabin version has two double cabins, sharing a head, in each hull.

Standard power is two 150-hp Yanmar diesels; two 200-hp Yanmars are optional, and they produce a top speed of 22 knots. Range is about 1,000 nm.

fountaine pajot 36 power catamaran

The new 36-footer is designed for comfortable living on board, with a redesigned aft cockpit, galley, and dining area, all with the aim of adding space. The twin hulls provide exceptional stability at sea or on the hook.

The open cockpit has a large lounge seat aft, facing a dining or cocktail table. The back of the seat folds out over the swim platform for sun bathing. (There’s also a large, three-person sun lounge on the foredeck.) A walkway on each side leads back to the full-beam swim platform.

A large windshield and side windows bring a lot of natural light into the salon. The fully equipped galley extends along the port side, while a lounge, facing a table, and occasional chairs are to starboard. A two-person seat is at the helm.

The Fountaine Pajot MY 4.S will make its debut at the Cannes boat show in September. Base price is 400,000 Euros, or about $486,456.

Specs.: LOA: 36’1”; Beam: 16’8”; Draft: 2’6”; Disp.: 19,000 lbs.; Fuel: 316 gals.; Water: 92 gals.; Power: 2×150-hp Yanmar diesels. Read more:

Maximum living space, stability and low fuel consumption are the keywords to describe the Highland 35. These are the important advantages which definitively launched the power catamaran industry. And today, this powercat could be a great deal!

Successor to the Greenland 34, with which Fountaine Pajot launched themselves into the 10 meter power catamaran market in the early 2000s, the Highland 35 became the entry-level boat in a full range, which included the Summerland 40, the Cumberland 44 and the Queensland 55. If the biggest models are catamarans with imposing dimensions, the kid-brother with his 10.35 meter overall length and especially a beam of 4.40m is the go-anywhere, super-versatile boat par excellence. The buyers were not mistaken: with 68 units built between 2005 and 2011, it has brought happiness to many former sailing enthusiasts but also and especially to boaters eager for autonomy and comfort, as well as charter bases looking for something economic to operate and especially easy to maneuver short-handed while having record habitable space. A catamaran that offers the ability, (thanks to a beam of only 4.40 m), to return to port in the evening! From the beginning, it was available in two versions: DUO (two double cabins and two heads compartments) or TRIO (two double cabins in the starboard hull and a large one for the owner to port).

The most you’ll get from a Highland? A range of 1,000 miles at 6 knots.

The price of a Fountaine Pajot power catamaran varies according to the size of the model chosen and your cruising project. Our dealers are at your disposal to guide you in your choice of fittings, packages and options to best suit your boat purchase project. You can find out the starting price of the boat your choice on this page HERE .

IPS engines, fitted on some Fountaine Pajot motor catamarans are designed to offer greater energy efficiency, which translates into better fuel economy compared to other systems of propulsion. The overall design of IPS engines aims to optimise a boat’s performance in terms of speed , manoeuvrability and fuel economy. And of course, IPS engines offer excellent manoeuvrability thanks to steerable propellors, thus facilitating manœuvres in tight spaces like harbours.

Spacious and comfortable when sailing, Fountaine Pajot motor yachts also offer fine cruising speed. Depending on the model and the engine installed on board, they can reach a max speed of 24 knots and 18 knots in fast cruising mode.

Power catamarans are naturally more efficient than monohull power boats . Depending on the model and the engine installed on board, at a high cruising speed, i.e. around 18 knots, motor yachts in the Fountaine Pajot range can reach between 260 and 425 nautical miles. At an “economical” cruising speed, they can reach up to 1000 nautical miles. The Power 67, the Flagship model in the range, can reach up to 4000 nautical miles at economy cruise speed. Take a look at the boat comparator here

Thanks to its architecture with two floats and a central suspended platform, its mass is divided by two and better spread. Thinner hulls decrease the Archimedes thrust and require much less energy to move the keel through the water. Half the consumption of a monocoque is the result, increasing the range of motor catamarans for long crossings and long stays at anchor. For the same length, a catamaran gives much more living surface . The great width permits much more spacious cockpit space as well as a huge interior-exterior living space on one level,

Innovative, high-tech composite materials constitute most of the structure of our motor catamarans : hulls, flybridge, decks, bulkheads and more. Fountaine Pajot has perfected a resin injection and infusion technique, an advanced technology that gives our boats all their robustness. Thanks to this expertise, we can make our motor yachts considerably lighter while maintaining consistent quality . Injection also makes it possible to meet the most stringent environmental requirements, in line with the commitments of the Fountaine Pajot Group.
