Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race Returns for 2023

Profile picture for user Marblehead Beacon

The 39 th biennial Marblehead to Halifax Ocean race returns this year, the first since 2019.

The Notice of Race is up on the web page and registrations are now being accepted (www.marbleheadtohalifax.com). The committee is already at work planning for onshore activities.

The 363 nautical mile race will start in Marblehead Harbor on July 9, 2023, sponsored by the Boston Yacht Club and the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron.

“The Notice of Race is up, and we’re thrilled to be back,” said Vice Commodore Bruce Baker, co-chair of the race. “We think there is pent-up demand because of the Pandemic, and we are expecting a brisk signup,” he added. The last race was in the summer of 2019. The Covid-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2021 race when the US/Canadian border was closed.

From the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron Co-Chair Graham Roy added “l echo Vice Commodore Baker’s excitement. RNSYS is thrilled to be welcoming this group of sailors back to our club next summer. The long-standing tradition of the race, and skipping 2021, has increased the interest from the local boats that are looking to participate. We hope to have a banner year in both entries and champagne sailing conditions.”

The Marblehead to Halifax is one of the oldest races on the eastern seaboard. It began 1905 and has continued every other year except during war time. More recently, the 2021 scheduled race was canceled because of the pandemic and the closing of the international border between the U.S. and Canada.

Space Monkey arrives first in Marblehead-to-Halifax race

Sailors in the 39th Marblehead-to-Halifax race have started crossing the finish line.

On July 11, the 68-foot yacht, Space Monkey, commanded the spotlight, crossing the finish line first. Its 15-member crew sailed past the finish line at 2:43 p.m. ADT, completing the journey is one day, 23 hours, 18 minutes and 29 seconds.

Co-owned by David Greenstein and co-skippered by Nelson Mills, Space Monkey took “line honors,” first to finish in the ORR (Official Racing Rule) Division and third in ORR-1. Space Monkey is from Stamford, Connecticut.

Following closely behind Space Monkey in the same ORR-1 division was the Naval Academy’s 66-foot Reichel Pugh, Kodiak. Led by Javier Jimenez Kane and a team of 16, Kodiak sailed past the finish line at 4:22 p.m. ADT. It took Kodiak two days, 57 minutes and 17 seconds to complete the race.

Despite finishing second, Kodiak is in line to secure the first place in ORR-1 when considering corrected time. This means it has sailed the best race relative to the boat’s potential performance, even though it didn’t cross the finish line first.

In sailing, “corrected time” is like leveling the score in a race. It’s the time it takes a boat to finish the race, but with some alterations. These alterations consider things like the boat’s size, design and other features that can affect how fast it goes. Like a golf handicap, it’s way to make the race fair.

Seventy boats are competing, crewed by approximately 600 sailors from the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia.

As the race progresses, people can track the competition in real-time on marbleheadtohalifax.com . GPS transponders are on each boat.

The Marblehead Current has created a chart of Marblehead-specific racers on Wednesday afternoon.

The Marblehead Current will provide updates as results come in.

Marblehead to Halifax Ocean race set to make 2023 return

marblehead to halifax sailboat race

For the first time since 2019, the Marblehead to Halifax Ocean race will take place next year on July 9th. The biennial race makes its triumphant return after the 2021 race was canceled due to the pandemic forcing border closures between the U.S and Canada.

The 2023 sailing race will mark the 39th edition of the contest. Starting in Marblehead Harbor, sailors will race 363 nautical miles all the way up to Halifax, Nova Scotia. The race will be sponsored by the Boston Yacht Club as well as the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron.

Vice Commodore Bruce Baker, Race co-chair, said in a statement that the span of four years between races, rather than the normal two years, has generated a lot of excitement surrounding the announcement .

“The Notice of Race is up, and we’re thrilled to be back,” he said. “We think there is pent-up demand because of the Pandemic, and we are expecting a brisk signup.”

The race is one of the most historic and oldest on the eastern seaboard. It was first held in 1905 and other than times of war and the pandemic, the tradition of the race has been carried out every other year. The race has got its roots from the commercial and fishing trade routes between Nova Scotia, and what were then known as “the boston states” in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Recreational yachting grew steadily in the 19th century and included the foundations of the Boston Yacht Club (1866), the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Club (1837), and the Eastern Yacht Club (1870). Both of these factors played a significant role in the creation of the race.

In a statement, Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron Co-Chair Graham Roy shared his enthusiasm with Baker.

“l echo Vice Commodore Baker’s excitement. RNSYS is thrilled to be welcoming this group of sailors back to our club next summer. The long-standing tradition of the race, and skipping 2021, has increased the interest from the local boats that are looking to participate. We hope to have a banner year in both entries and champagne sailing conditions.”

The notice for the race is posted online and can be found at www.marbleheadtohalifax.com . Registrations are now being accepted.
