Indian Harbor Classic Yacht Regatta, 2016

The IHYC Classic Yacht Regatta on Sept. 16-17 saw a small but enthusiastic group of Atlantics mixing it up with beautiful classic yachts of all shapes and sizes. After several late dropouts only three Atlantics turned up, all from Cedar Point Yacht Club, but all agreed the regatta was great fun, and certainly different from the racing we normally do. In sparkling conditions, we started in a mixed group with the Herreshoff S-Boat and Shields classes. Although Atlantics are known to be faster than both, it was pleasing to see how quickly all three of us steamed away from the Shields, a much newer design. Starling Burgess was a brilliant designer, ahead of his time.

First Atlantic was A16 Savvy , sailed by Guy Gurney, John Withington, and Samantha Parisi who did most of the steering. Second was A2 Bruté , Charlie Langalis, third Kerry Dawson in A146 Inspiration . Afterwards the three boats sailed the short distance over to Cold Spring Harbor for the Janeway regatta the following weekend. It's a very convenient arrangement, and we encourage more Atlantic skippers to try it next year.

2014 IHYC Classic Regatta

On September 13, the Atlantic Class was invited to participate for the first time in the annual Classic Yacht Regatta held by Indian Harbor Yacht Club. Seven boats made the trip to Greenwich, CT, for the event, which was a convenient stopping-­off point for the Janeway Series across the Sound the following weekend. 

This was a day to remember. First, we watched in awe as a group of large yachts thundered across the start line, including Spartan , a beautifully restored 72ft gaff-­rigged New York 50; Black Watch , an S&S 68ft yawl which is a sister to the famous Bolero ; and the 72ft Herreshoff ketch Ticonderoga . Fitting company for our classic Atlantics. 

In 15-­18 knots of wind, we were the third class to start, sharing the line with five Herreshoff S­-Boats. After a short weather leg, the course took us on a close fetch for five miles across Long Island Sound to a buoy just west of Oyster Bay. The seven Atlantics kept pretty close, but soon left the older S­-Boats behind. Another short weather leg was followed by a wonderful fast spinnaker reach back toward the mainland shore, of the kind that Atlantics used to enjoy before the days of windward-­leeward courses. 

Aboard Frank Sparks's newly-­acquired A30 Blue Dahlia , we held on to a narrow lead with two boats breathing down our necks, until on the final spinnaker reach to the finish line when the brummel hook on our spinnaker guy exploded, so we had to drop the sail with no time to recover. Stephen Jay in Alliance (A148) and Leighton Lee in Vesper (A149) swept past to take first and second places. The first four were from four different fleets. 

We had hoped to return in 2015, but unfortunately this year it clashes with our Nationals at Cold Spring Harbor. In 2014 the sailing was great, IHYC members were exceedingly generous with their hospitality, and the parties were a blast. And of all sailboat races, classic regattas – featuring vintage, wooden and Spirit of Tradition sailboats – are some of the most exciting to watch.

Not only are the classically styled yachts some of the most beautiful boats in the world, the racing is inspiring, conjuring up the spirit of yachting lore. In other words, attendees get treated to the best in summertime entertainment. The races are a thrill to watch, and the dockside social soirees, awards ceremonies and parties enable attendees to chat with New England’s finest yachtsmen. For yachters, there isn’t a better way to spend a summer weekend in New England.

Which sailing regattas should you attend? Worldwide Boat has the insider’s scoop on some of New England’s most prestigious summer sailboat races. Try to make it to a few – and of course, a sailboat charter for race day offers the best seat to take in all the thrilling action.

Classic Regattas to Catch every Summer

1. Vineyard Cup – Martha’s Vineyard, MA – (July)

Held in Martha’s Vineyard, this regatta features more than 100 participating yachts, and a full slate of races over three days. The event – which was launched in 2006 – is sponsored by Sail MV, and it’s quickly become one of New England’s premier regattas. Not only is the racing spectacular, attendees can enjoy a wide range of onshore events. Although this isn’t strictly a classic regatta – there many different classes of boats and races courses – the Vineyard Cup is a must-see for classic yacht enthusiasts.

2. Castine to Camden Yacht Race – Castine, ME – (August)

The Castine Classic Yacht Race – part of three days of regattas in the 2018 Wooden Boat Series – takes place in Maine’s stunning Penobscot Bay, an inlet in the Gulf of Maine. Specked with islands more than 200 miles and spectacular harbors, the bay offers the best in Maine yachting. The Castine to Camden race puts yachters on a 20-mile course across the Bay, from Castine to Camden. Castine Yacht Club, the race’s sponsor, opens the regatta to classic and Spirit of Tradition monohulls over 28’.

3. Camden Classic Yacht Regatta – Camden, ME – (August)

For more than 30 years, classic yachts have gathered at the Camden Yacht Club for the annual Camden Classic Regatta. Featuring a challenging 15+ mile course, the yacht runs from Camden to Brooklin, ME. This, along with the Castine and Eggemoggin races, make up a wonderful three days of classic yacht racing on Penobscot Bay.

4. Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta – Marblehead, MA – (August)

Corinthian is a name synonymous with New England sailing. For more than 125 years, the Corinthian Yacht Club has called Marblehead, MA home, and in that time, they’ve produced numerous racing champions including several America’s Cup defenders. The Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta was started nearly 40 years ago, and it’s become of the largest celebrates of “classic yachts and characters.” Just as speculator as the racing, though, is the onshore atmosphere, another compelling reason to go.

5. Nantucket Race Week – Nantucket, MA – (August)

Nantucket Race Week runs for nine days in mid-August, and features races in numerous classes. Yet, one of the week’s most exciting races is the Nantucket Regatta (held on August 18). The race was first run in 1930, but recently underwent restructuring in 2016. Open to 24+ foot classic wooden yachts, the regatta is part of the North American Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge Series. And it’s certainly one race you will want to catch during the week.

6. Opera House Cup – Nantucket, MA – (August)

The Opera House Cup is the oldest classic sailboat race on the East Coast, having started more than 40 years ago in 1973. A joy to watch, the Opera House Cup draws a fleet up roughly 100 vintage yachts – offering a unique look at many different styles of classic boats.

7. Herreshoff Classic Yacht Regatta – Bristol, RI – (August)

The Herreschoff Regatta – held each year in Bristol, RI – was named after the Herreschoff Manufacturing Company, a storied yacht builder that produced several America’s Cup defenders. In fact, many classic yachts feature Herreschoff designs. The classic regatta – part of the Panerai Series – takes place in the picturesque Narragansett Bay on Friday, with its sister race the Newport Classic taking place on Saturday. Throughout the weekend, attendees are welcomed to cocktail hours, expos and plenty to see and do.

8. Newport Classic Yacht Regatta – Newport, RI – (August)

Newport is a classic New England yachting town – one of the largest yacht charter ports in New England. And with its long history in sailing, it makes sense Newport is one to one of the East Coast’s most exciting classic regattas. Since 1980, the Newport Classic race has taken place in the southern reaches of Narragansett Bay. Part of the Narragansett Bay Classic Yacht Rendezvous – along with the Herrschoff – the race starts from Bristol to Newport, followed by racing near Newport.

9. Indian Harbor Yacht Club Classic Yacht Regatta – Greenwich, CT – (September)

A recent addition to the classic regatta summer series, the Indian Harbor Classic Regatta takes place on Long Island Sound. The regatta’s sponsor – Greenwich, CT’s Indian Harbor Yacht Club – opens the race to classic and Spirit of Tradition yachts, and hosts awards dinners, cocktail hours and parties throughout the weekend.

Classic yacht regatta returns to Falmouth this summer

Cornwall will once again showcase the historic Richard Mille classic yacht regatta when it returns to Falmouth this summer

Falmouth Harbour and the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club are expecting an impressive turnout.

This includes 15 classic superyachts, 500 participants and their guests, as well as hundreds of spectators.

Following last year's success, the regatta, held between June 2 and 15 this year, starts with three days of racing in Falmouth.

Once again followed by stops in Dartmouth, Cowes, and concluding in Le Havre, France.

Dr William Collier of Classic Regattas, organisers of the Richard Mille Cup, said: "A lot of thought and planning went into the 2023 event, the feedback from participants was tremendous and when we started to discuss the 2024 regatta we realised that the best was simply stay with the proven formulae of Falmouth, Dartmouth, Cowes and Le Havre".

Competitors and spectators alike can look forward to the character and charm offered by the prestigious competition.

Royal Cornwall Yacht Club commodore Sarah Hancock added: "I was delighted to receive the call asking if the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club would host the Richard Mille Cup again this year.

"For spectators, what could be better than watching the spectacular majesty of these classic yachts racing so competitively in our historic bay, as they did over 100 years ago?".

Falmouth Harbour, regarded as one of the deepest natural harbours globally, will welcome the classic schooners and cutters from around the world.

The harbour's CEO, Miles Carden, said: "Falmouth - the third deepest natural harbour in the world with a history steeped in boatbuilding and renovation - is an incredibly hospitable port town.

"Hosting the prestige and size of these vessels is not without its complexities but all do-able thanks to a brilliant Harbour team."

The regatta will feature yachts that have been subject to regular maintenance and restoration, including last year's winner, the 42m twin-masted schooner Mariette and the 65m three-master Adix.

The Richard Mille contenders include owners and charterers of yachts built before 1939 or those that are faithful replicas.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

Classic Yachts Challenge Series

The organizing authority (OA) for the Classic Yachts Challenge Series (CYCS) is the Classic Yacht Owners Association (CYOA) in cooperation with the Organizing Authorities of the participating Series Events.

The Series takes place across three Racing Districts: “Maine”, ”Massachusetts”, and ”RI, CT, NY”.

To qualify for a Series' award, a boat must be scored in a minimum of 5 races, and 1 of these races must be scored outside the vessel’s declared Racing District. Note that some Series Events have more than 1 race; it is races scored that count.

Leading into the Opera House Cup, this Friday/Saturday event features buoy and distance racing.

This event in its 52nd year the season highlight for this region. The pursuit race is followed by a parade and biggest social of the year.

Herreshoff Classic Yacht Regatta

Featuring feeder races to and from Newport, the regatta takes place on Saturday followed by awards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum.

How to read the Series Results:

• Per the CYCS Notice of Series , to qualify for a boat must be a CYOA Member and compete in 5 individual races across 3 events in at least 2 districts. For district awards, a boat must sail in 3 races across 2 events.
• A boat's High Point Percentage overall score is determined by summing the top 5 points earned in the boat's top 5 races and dividing that by the total number of boats sailed against in those races - then multiplying by 100. Therefore, 5 first places earned over the season would equate to 100%. A tie breaker is determined by whomever sailed against the most boats. For districts, it is top 3 scores. Qualified boats are then ranked by the CRF Division ( the division listed on their CRF Certificate).
• In the case where an Organizing Authority (OA) of an event choose to sail boats from different CRF Divisions against each other or not for race management purposes, where applicable the Corrected Time or Corrected Speed was instead used to rank boats against other boats in their CRF Certificate Division. Therefore, the starting class place earned at an event may differ than the division place for the series. Please note for the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta, the ERR Handicap was removed for a boat's CYCS score.
• The goal of the Series is to encourage friendly competition and find the best way to fairly compare results transparently. A great amount of time was taken to analyze these results and any questions can be directed to Kate Somers: kate @risingt.com

Two important events saw the Mangusta Maxi Open by the prominent Italian builder Overmarine again protagonist on the nautical scene: Marine Max exclusive partner for the United States attended the Palm Beach Boat Show , running from March 22 to 25 with the spectacular motor yacht Mangusta 92 and the Mangusta 130 superyacht on display.
