Instead we would be going to Christ the redeemer as planned and Sugarloaf. I emailed the person to stress we did not want the tour and ask for a refund as we had visited the same places the very same day. There was no refund as they said they had bought the tickets for the tours. When we visited Christ the redeemer with another company, the tour guide only bought the tickets while we’re there, and it only cost a fraction of the tour price. They intentionally emailed us the day before our tour, knowing we had less than 24 hours to cancel. They knew in advance that the roads would be blocked from 21-26 Feb, but emailed us on 23 Feb Be warned, no refund even if the tour itinerary is different to what one has booked Read more Written March 6, 2020

Our tour had 17 people in the van, in which after the first site we left with 16 they completely left a foreigner behind which no means of transportation for that poor old lady to get back with no knowledge of the language. The ad also says it includes a Free Brazilian lunch buffet. WHICH DID NOT INCLUDE, nobody on the tour ate before or brought snacks because we all were looking forward to the food. Everyone demanded their money back and the lady told us no. They said because of carnival we couldn’t see the 18 other sites. And no buffet because the holiday. They knew about the holiday a year in advanced they shouldn’t have advertised all the events and should’ve canceled the tour. They tried to say they were the only tour operating but we saw so many tours operating. I would give them 0 starts if possible I want a refund. They should be kicked off as a tour group. I paid $756 for 9 people to have dinner as advertised at the restaurant advertised. The driver was instructed to take us to a much cheaper buffet style restaurant. This was NOT acceptable. It says that transportation is included, however the driver was instructed to collect an additional $140 from me. Again, unacceptable. Borrowed a local's phone to call the operator who said they could not pick us up at the cruise port and the tour was already started. So I cancelled and got another independent tour at the port. I booked through Viator so requested a refund. The tour operator claimed they could not pick us up at the cruise port because of Carnival traffic. Carnival was 2 weeks away. While on our city tour there was no traffic jam, the crowds at the Redeemer & Sugar Loaf were small. It seems the tour operator made the excuse not to refund our money. They claimed they notified me but I had no phone contact possible. Do not use this company. I have booked through Viator before with very good results. This company is irresponsible. While we thought the bus trip up the mountains to Petropolis was breath-taking and beautiful, and while we enjoyed visiting the summer palace of Dom Pedro II, it seemed like extra stops were added to the tour to make it last longer and to enrich the coffers of several vendors who have an agreement with the tour operators. Our guide spoke fluent Portuguese and Spanish and passable English, but since the majority of the people on our tour were Spanish speakers, most of the tour information was in Spanish. He made an effort to inform the four English speakers on the bus, but much of the information at the palace became tedious. I don't know if there were more government buildings from the Imperial era than the palace, the Crystal Palace, and the princess home, but we didn't see them. It would have been nice to see some examples of the German influence on the architecture of the city. The additional stops at the brewery, the shopping areas, and the chocolate vendor seemed like an effort to make the tour long enough to make it worth the cost. He seemed a good guide and interacted with the group but he could not speak any English . This put him in an awkward situation . I contacted the tour operator the day before and was told that the guide would be English speaking . They were not . Luckily there were other customers who could translate when needed , but my point is that I shouldn’t have been put in this situation. If you see a tour leaving from Fortaleza that says with English speaking guide . Treat with caution , as this will probably be inaccurate. In this part of Brazil , English is not well spoken , not on hotels , restaurants , or tourism offices . I think viator need to look at this as they are misleading English speaking clients . Brazilian Boat Party: Pinching Myself Thinking I'm in Some Blissful Dream

Jackie Steves is guest-hosting her Dad’s blog with 17 posts in 17 days. Follow the adventures of Andy and Jackie Steves as they ‘ the first Steves to venture into South America ‘ report on their experience.

After a short night’s sleep we went at it again ‘ this time it was an all-day boat party. We and all our new friends were babbling brooks of joy at being on a boat, sipping caipirinhas, and being driven around to Ilha Grande’s most gorgeous lagoons. We felt like we belonged in a movie or a music video.

When we got to the first lagoon Andy was the first to jump in. Within a matter of minutes everyone (about 30 20-something-year-olds) followed suit except me and Italian Tweedledumb, Paolo. He confessed to me with a big adorable grin, “Don’t tell anyone, but I don’t know how to swim.” But that didn’t stop him. Soon he was paddling around down there with a life jacket like a three-year-old. I think people found a way to jump off almost every possible perch on the boat.

The roof of the boat was a big flat platform, perfect for a dance floor. This was the most surreal party ‘ I think for all of us. I was chatting up top with one of the Brazilians who helps run the hostel, Frederico, when a man in a small motor boat drove up alongside our boat. Frederico asked me if I liked coconut. When I said yes he called down to the man below in Portuguese. The man threw up a coconut. Frederico pulled out a pocketknife, whacked off the top of the coconut, tossed in a straw, and gave it to me. The all-natural refreshment couldn’t have been more fitting.

At one point the Brazilians turned off the music and joined all together in song and dance. They really know how to make their own fun. Just the sight of them all singing and dancing made me extremely happy.

The bar turned out a continuous flow of caipirinhas. You would think they would mass-make these ahead of time for the sake of ease, but instead the cocktails were ever so fresh, made from limes they chopped the moment before they threw them in your cup so they could only make four at a time, with two regular-size shakers.

The next morning our time in paradise expired. Andy kept asking, “Are you sure you don’t want to stay a few more days?” I could stay the rest of my life so happily here, but I was also very excited to see Rio.

Wow, what a fun day. i`ve had the coconut with a straw in it before; the flavor of it doesn t do much for me but the fun of drinking it right from the coconut makes it totally worth while.

Nothing like fun in the sun, crystal blue waters and coconut treats, too! A nice memory for back at school when most of your time is spent with your new friends called books. I`m enjoying your writting. Keep up the good work.

ahhhh, drinking caipirinhas on a beautiful beach with Tweedledee and Tweeedledumb, who could ask for anything more?

It`s true that the US work ethic is different than that of Brazil, especially coastal Brazil. And I think everybody who has ever worked hard or is working hard relates to pure bliss. But whatever happened to young adults who went into the Peace Corps, or Americorps, or who enlisted in the Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Course, or who work in soup kitchens? Is it possible some of us are totally spoiled? Not that Rick Steves` children are. But is class war when the 5% having most of the money in the US rails against paying higher taxes? Not that Rick Steves does. He and his company seem to be emblematic of spreading the wealth. Just hope that while he and his wife are funding the ability of their children to wallow in the sybaritic, they are also thinking about how they can incent the kids to contribute. I may have missed it but the future blogs for Andy and Jackie would be even more impressive if they were doing something for the most underprivileged of the planet. ((And I could be wrong because we all know that some of wealthiest give back behind the scenes.)) That`s admirable too.

Peace Corps volunteers are generally college graduates. I am sure that Jackie is still in school and I think that Andy hasn`t graduated yet either. Good for them that they are traveling in South America well outside their comfort zone! I am sure that they are learning a lot that will affect how they think about the world in the future. Let`s give them time to finish their education before sending them off to the Peace Corps, Americorps or the Marins Corps Platoon Leadership Course. This is a blog about their travels. They may do another blog about their charitable work. In the meantime, I hope that they are having fun while learning more about the world.

I do not understand why some people are so cranky…perhaps THEY need to broaden their horizons or perhaps THEY never had the chance and just may be a bit jealous of the opportunities these young adults have. Anyway, Jackie and Andy, ROCK ON! P.S.: I am not a liberal. Contrary to some ideas it is possible to be a conservative and still care about people and the world.

Come, come, Rick devotees. You should know that Andy graduated from Notre Dame this year with majors in Italian language and literature and design, I believe. There was even a photo of proud Dad with proud son on this website.

Ah, then a post graduation trip before settling in to more school or a new job. What fun that he branched out to South America.

I took a boat trip with a group of Scandanavians who had never spent much time in the sun. They really got sick from sun burn. I never learned more than that.

Party at sea!

A full day of breathtaking scenery, diving in crystal clear waters and good food

There are some good things to do in this city, but a beautiful boat trip is among the unmissable ones. The best option is to bring together a good group of friends, choose the soundtrack and go through this beautiful bay, stopping the boat to enjoy the view or for a swim.

Nothing better than a table with good food to gather a group of friends. So call your friends to start the day with a breakfast at Pousada do Boqueirão, a small charming hotel located in the historical center, in Carmo neighborhood. The hotel has a view to the All Saints Bay. The table is full, with fresh fruit and handmade bread.

From there, drive to Bahia Marina to take the private boat. From Carmo until there, you will pass by the Model Market, Lacerda Elevator and Contorno Avenue, only beautiful things on the way. Those who woke up late and missed the coffee can wait next to the boats. The place is beautiful, organized and safe.

Most boats can take 9 people, but there are other options of boats for more passengers. It’s better to check the capacity with the sailor. Put the drinks in the ice, turn up the volume: the fun begins there. The whole city seashore has beautiful places! You will see São Marcelo Fort nearby. You will also get another view of the Lacerda Elevator, Model Market, the upper city, Humaitá Lighthouse and Ribeira seashore, as you will see them from the water.

Great dip in the sea and tasty meal

Go straight to Ilha dos Frades, at Ponta de Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe. All requalified, the beach has just won the Blue Flag. It’s all beautiful, organized and super-clean. The locals are proud and take good care of the place, making everything even more charming. Before docking, don’t forget to stop at Viração beach for a swim. Then go to the Maritime Terminal. At one end of the beach, there is Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe little church, built by the Portuguese in Ponta de Nossa Senhora in the 17th century. At the top of the hill where it is located, an observation deck was installed. At the other end of the beach, another observation deck gives an overview of the All Saints Bay. From there, you can walk to Viração beach by land. This strip of sand is much more deserted and has no tents or vendors, so if you’re going there, take whatever you need, but don’t forget to leave everything clean when you leave: preserve it!

At this time you will already be hungry. How about having a nice meal and also eating with your eyes? Restaurant da Preta is your destiny, one of those hiding places in All Saints Bay. Okean 50 is a Brazilian Beauty

With about 4,600 miles of coastline and one of the largest populations of any country in the world, Brazil has been recognized as a potentially hot yacht market for American and European builders since the early aughts, when Goldman Sachs unleashed its BRIC thesis upon the world. Hype has since cooled around the concept — BRIC theory posited that by 2050, Brazil, Russia, India and China would be the world’s dominant economic powers — but interest in the Brazilian boating market has not. Enter Okean Yachts and its new 50, a Brazilian-built cruiser poised to put its builder on the map. The Okean 50 is being treated as a trawler by some because of its dual-mode hull (more on that later), yet thanks to Italian yacht designer Paolo Ferragni, the yacht’s exterior is unlike most any trawler you’ve seen. The outer appearance includes 3-foot-1-inch-high windows that ring the yacht’s salon, making it appear as if she’s wearing Oakley Razor Blade sunglasses — a look made twice as strong by glazing with a reflective tint. I couldn’t help but think of Rickey Henderson patrolling the outfield with his staple look when I saw her on the docks in West Palm Beach, Florida, on test day.

But the boat doesn’t just make an impression with her looks. Her layout, particularly on the main deck, was a hit when she debuted stateside at the 2017 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, and it’s plain to see why. Those windows allow as close to fully unobstructed salon views as I can recall seeing aboard a yacht, plus two hydraulic, foldout bulwarks lower to port and starboard. This act of oceangoing origami increases the Okean’s beam from 14 feet 7 inches to 20 feet 7 inches, making her an excellent party platform.

The paneled salon door aft folds to starboard, and another door to starboard slides open for access to the fold-down terrace. The windows in the aft galley to port also open, all of which creates a feeling of spaciousness and airiness that may very well set the bar for vessels in this class. My test boat is likely to garner lots of stares this summer when she plies the waters off Montauk, New York, her future home, and I’d guess that the yacht’s style and entertainment-friendly features will make her popular in South Florida, Miami in particular.

Although the 50 has a day-boat feel when she is fully open, she is still a motoryacht. She has a full-beam, amidships en suite master stateroom with an athwartships queen-size berth and headroom of 6 feet 3 inches. A vanity to port is beset with stowage areas, including a 4-foot-long-by-1-foot-wide-by-1-foot-7-inch-deep space tucked behind it that can handle larger items like extra sheets or paper towels. The master’s head has patterned-marble inlays in the shower, as does the day-head, which has a private entrance to the forepeak VIP. That VIP feels large for a boat this size, with 6 feet 11 inches of headroom. A third stateroom to port can have bunk beds or side-by-side twins (the only option for customization available on the accommodations level). Though my test boat had a washer and dryer in its lazarette, future versions will come standard with laundry equipment in this guest space, for easier access.

The amount of stowage on the accommodations level as well as the general roominess of the staterooms hint that this boat is designed for longer journeys. Indeed, Okean’s calling card (along with the foldout terraces) is its dual-mode hull. With twin 435 hp Volvo Penta IPS600s, the 50 can top out at 25 knots with the hammer down and cruise at around 20 knots as her engines burn 33 gph. This results in a range of 230 nautical miles with a 10 percent reserve. However, when you throttle her down to 1,000 rpm, she can cruise at 6 knots while sipping just 1.6 gph and achieve a range of 1,425 nautical miles, making her an excellent candidate for the Great Loop or some island hopping.

Besides offering flexibility when it comes to performance, the hull has an exceptionally soft ride. My blustery test day saw swells of up to 8 feet in Lake Worth Inlet, and the boat handled the turbulence well, climbing steadily up the faces of the waves before nuzzling gently into their troughs, again and again and again.

The Okean 50’s performance in the slop, coupled with her layout and variable cruising speeds, should make her stand out from the crowd. She has enough Brazilian flair to carve out her own niche in an American yachting market that’s always looking for something just a little bit different.

How to Host a Yacht Party

A yacht party is a fantastic change of pace from dinner at a restaurant or a backyard cookout. Yachting isn’t a common thing for a lot of people, so there’s a natural excitement built into the event, even if the boat never leaves the dock. All you have to do as the host is play into that vibe, and you’ve got yourself a successful event.

One of the best things you can do when inviting guests to a yacht party is to inform them in advance about general etiquette aboard a boat. Friends who are landlubbers will not know, for instance, that it’s customary to leave your shoes in a dock box before boarding a boat.

Tell them ahead of time that their feet will be on display so they can get a pedicure, buy a cool pair of socks or invest in a little toe jewelry to feel comfortable throughout the party. They’ll also appreciate the pro tip of wearing shoes that are easy to slide on and off without having to sit down and deal with laces or straps.

And, for yacht parties during the day, encourage your guests to dress for the sun. Have sunscreen on board to use, and offer helpful suggestions like bringing a hat, a light shirt to cover easy-burn spots like shoulders and the back of the neck, and perhaps linen pants or a sarong for legs that don’t see the sun too often. Polarized sunglasses also help stay comfortable throughout the day on board.

Think bigger-picture about how people should dress: if your yacht party is during the day, then your guests might bring a small bag of clothes for later; you’ll need a place on the yacht to put those bags. Your yacht party may extend into the night, which means there could be a big swing in the temperature, so encourage guests to bring clothing that can be layered on and off.

If the party will include the boat leaving the dock, then advise your guests about the golden rule of remaining upright: one hand for you, one hand for the boat. Yes, you can carry a plate of hors d’oeuvres or a cocktail in one hand, but whenever the boat moves, you always want one hand free to grab a rail, a handhold, or anything else you might need to steady yourself. Helping new boaters stay safe underway should be priority one!

In terms of hosting, think about serving a steady array of finger foods instead of a big, sit-down meal. The little stuff is easier to store and cook quickly, and it’s a better option to offer people a variety of foods if the boat is moving since some people may be a bit more sensitive than others.

Skip the things that come on skewers (those little sticks never end up in the trash, and they can poke bare feet if they end up on deck ). Instead, think about crudites, bruschetta bites, and boneless wings that leave no refuse behind.

Also, have soft drinks such as ginger ale and lemon-lime soda on hand to help soothe any bouts of seasickness . Ginger is another well-regarded remedy and can be served as a chewable or in a cup of iced tea.

Sometimes, yacht parties are themed, with everything from steel-drum players to belly dancers aboard for entertainment. Swim parties are, of course, a go-to favorite, as are “Under the Sea” parties with a seafood spread. You can go with a color, or a lack thereof, such as an all-white party, or encourage people to wear Hawaiian shirts for a Polynesian night .

Music is a must. So don’t forget to create a playlist to go with your theme. It’s hard to go wrong with boating standbys such as Jimmy Buffett, Bob Marley, and the Beach Boys. More than a few great singalongs have started with “Rock the Boat” by the Hues Corporation or “Banana Boat (Day-O)” by Harry Belafonte.

Yes, that last suggestion is about as polar opposite as you can get from “Under the Sea,” but that’s the beauty of a yacht party. It can be anything you want it to be.

Kim Kavin has been on boats in more than 50 countries and islands, including in the Caribbean, Mediterranean, South Pacific, Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia. She grew up learning to steer a ski boat and Hobie Holder at her grandfather’s lake house in New Jersey, and went on to spend time aboard everything from America’s Cup racing sailboats to submarines.

Thailand’s Sin City beach is once again living up to its lascivious reputation , as yet another couple of tourists were caught taking advantage of the picturesque shore as the spot for a passionate round of lovemaking.

Months after another couple outraged officials with some sandy hanky panky, the latest naked pair were spotted blatantly fornicating under the streetlights at Pattaya Beach, a popular tourist destination dubbed “Sin City” for its bawdy bars and massage parlors.

The couple seemed unbothered in the 1-minute video as other beachgoers — seen sitting just yards away from the pair — look on and laugh.

“Is this normal in Pattaya?” the original video, shared to Facebook Wednesday, read.

It provoked shocked comments such as: “Why not go to a hotel with such performances?” and “What kind of people are these?”

The perverted rendevous occurred on a strip of Jomtien Beach, home to high-rise condominiums, hotels and restaurants, and not far from the Pattaya Water Sports Complex, according to Pattaya Mail.

The popular strip is flooded with locals and tourists at all hours of the day and late into the night, including the estimated 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. timeframe police estimate the sex-crazed pair engaged in their affair.

It is also a well-known spot for public lovemaking, despite such acts being illegal.

The city’s Tourist Police is investigating the incident, but fear the perverted pair may be long gone — while the video was only shared this week, it appears to have been filmed as long as three months earlier, Khaosod English reported.

Tents were seen strewn near the part of the beach the pair was seen lying on, which lifeguard officials told police were removed in December.

Sexual acts in public are illegal in Thailand — and are punishable by up to five years behind bars — but the rules have done little to stop offenders from blatantly engaging in the past.

In May of last year, a woman was caught performing oral sex on a man under a street light on a public sidewalk as workers set up a stage nearby.

Months earlier, a “disgusting foreigner” was caught having sex with a prostitute during an all-night booze bender on Christmas Day.

The blond tourist even waved to a bystander who had stopped to film the salacious sexcapade on his phone.
