The hulls provide impressive volumes to set up a custom layout including airy, luxurious guest cabins, and an opulent master suite with a walk-in dressing, desk, sofa, retractable TV, and an immense bathroom. A perfect setting to unwind and relax after a long day in the sun.

What makes the experience more worthwhile is the opportunity to sail more sustainably. Choose green, clean yachting, choose Sunreef 80 Eco: an eco-catamaran that redefines luxury sailing. What Is a Trimaran?

80 ft trimaran

A trimaran is a multi hulled sailboat with three individual hulls; the main hull ( vaka ) and a pair of outrigger hulls ( amas ). These smaller outrigger hulls are attached to the main hull using beams.

While trimarans have a rich history dating back nearly four millennia, these types of sailboats have only gained popularity in the late 1900s and early 2000s.

Trimarans are primarily used as personal boats for sailing enthusiasts or racing. These sailboats draw their versatility from their lightweight design, making them faster and easier to handle at sea when compared to single-hulled boats (monohulls). Additionally, the three hulls also contribute to better stability, making it very hard to capsize (although more likely than a cat according to this study)

Trimarans come in various sizes, and some can be as small as 19 feet (5.8 meters) in length, while others go up to 60 feet (18meters). They’re also used for different purposes. Most trimarans are used for racing and recreational purposes, although some units are still used as ferries.

As with all things, to find out which is the best we need to understand what it will be used for. There is a big difference in requirements between a boat used for day sailing compared to offshore around the world sailing.

The list below highlights the best trimarans for different purposes.

Best Trimarans For Cruising, Liveaboard and Sailing Around The World

The carbon hulls minimize weight, this makes for a lightweight ocean exploration sailboat with blistering speeds. One of its selling points is that this trimaran has previously been used for Arctic expeditions, possibly marking it as one of the better options for circumnavigation and offshore sailing in the northern waters.

A man named Geoff Hold circumnavigated the British Isles in 2007, becoming the first disabled person to achieve this feat. He had quadriplegia.

Living up to its name, the Challenger can withstand harsh weather conditions while blending performance with speed.

Final Thoughts

Admittedly, no trimaran is best for everyone. But whether you are looking to race with your friends, take your loved ones or friends for a cruise over the weekend, or circumnavigate the ocean, you can rest assured that these lightweight trimarans will deliver speed, safety, and comfort to make it worth your while.

These brands are innovatively designed and feature intricate safety mechanisms that make them virtually unsinkable. Give them a shot and begin your ocean adventure.

Power trimaran world cruiser

Hi there A few years back I posted some design ideas for an 80 ft power trimaran on the forums here and received a lot of very good feedback from the members which I really appreciated. It helped me to refine what was important and to get read of a bunch of stuff that wasn't. As a result I went back to the drawing board and also talked to some industry folk about what customers want and need in a boat designed to be a world cruiser. My background is in hydrogen fuel cell and renewable energy system design but in order to really make the most of those in a boat you really need to start with something different from what the mass production market currently provides. This is my first attempt at transferring my design ideas into a CAD program - I used Rhino and Flamingo - and I'm pretty happy with the result but in reality everything can be improved on. But enough of the preamble, here are the specs: - 10:1 round bilge, canoe bottom power trimaran of 98ft length and 30ft overall beam - max draft 4ft - 35 tons light ship - 2000 gallons of fuel - accommodation for 10 in 5 ensuite guest cabins - separate entrance crew quarters with accommodation for 4 in 2 cabins plus kitchen and bathroom - 17ft dinghy garage with rear door onto swim platform - all the usual amenities on the main deck and flying bridge Anyway, I have a attached a short (six page) overview of the design with some renders if you want to know more about it. Thanks and very much looking forward to your feedback!

Ok, so I don't think I was specific enough in my first post. The following points are what I am most interested in hearing about in the context of this design: - thoughts on twin Yanmars Vs single Cat 12 ACERT for propulsion - thoughts on fiberglass Vs aluminum construction for a vessel of this size - would you prefer it to be bigger, smaller or is it just about right? - exterior styling thumbs up or thumbs down? Cheers

ChrisPie said: ↑ Hi. Have you settles on the placement of the amas? You can design them to be riding on the bow waves of the main hull creating lift and reducing drag. This only applies at one particular speed. Compared to other designs I have seen your design looks a little narrow to achieve this. I would love to understand how this is calculated? General Information

“I  sailed Rapido Hull #01 on the Mediterranean Sea the other day and we were doing 14 knots upwind while cooking in the spacious kitchen!" Ferdinand van West (former F18 World Champion working with designers, Morrelli & Melvin ). ( Click here for original article in Catamaran Racing.)

Billed as the World’s Ultimate Ocean Cruising Trimaran , the Rapido 60 really is the Queen of the Oceans . It offers speed, safety, performance – and luxury.

The inspiration behind the Rapido 60 comes from Paul Koch (co founder of Rapido Trimarans), arguably, the man who has built more production trimarans than anyone else on the planet.

The design is by world renowned naval architects, Morelli & Melvin Design and Engineering who use some of the most sophisticated technology in the world. Triac Composites  is our exclusive builder.

While the foam sandwich and carbon construction is lightweight which gives the boat its speed, it also provides an extremely strong and rigid structure that has been designed to withstand the might of the oceans.

An additional benefit of the foam sandwich construction is the high degree of insulation, protecting the Rapido when the sun beats down.

Morelli & Melvin enjoy a very strong international reputation. Their designs even include entries for the America’s Cup .

[Video caption: Take a tour onboard Rapido 60, Romanza with owners, Dougall and Jaz Love, during Hamilton Island Race Week.]

Morrelli & Melvin's computer modelling said that the Rapido 60 was very strong. And so we tested it.

We bolted the centre hull of the Rapido to the factory floor in HCMC. We then brought in two mobile cranes – each took a diagonal corner of the two outer hulls. With one diagonal corner each, the two cranes began to lift while the trimaran’s centre hull remained bolted to the floor, causing it to twist. One tonne of lifting pressure… Two tonnes… Three tonnes…

As the trimaran twisted it began to creak and groan. But the sensitive electronic equipment we had measuring every move and twist remained unphased. Everything was within design parameters.

Seven tonnes… Eight tonnes… Nine tonnes…

The pressure was eased and the Rapido spring back into its original condition – totally unaffected by the enormous twisting pressure that had been placed upon it.

The computer modelling had accurately predicted the incredible structural strength of the composites used in the Rapido. The Rapido is built to take on the oceans.

Rapido is, simply, the Queen of the Oceans.

Incredible storage capacity

The Rapido 60 has amazing storage capability in the floats (4.8m x 1.3m), beneath the seats in the cockpit (2.1m x 0.5m) and in the forward cabin (1.4m x 1.2m x 1.2m).

FAST AND POWERFUL

Trimarans are safe, powerful and fast as demonstrated by the fact that they consistently win races and hold the solo speed record for circumnavigating the world.

Safety at sea is the No. 1 priority and this thinking is reflected throughout the design and construction of the Rapido.

The Rapido 60 has some truly amazing living spaces which provide more open, private and intimate areas than monohulls or catamarans.

stable and comfortable

Trimarans are comfortable on all points of sail.

The combination of safety, performance and comfort put the Rapido in a league of its own. The enormous trampoline nets add fun and excitement as you watch the blue water rush underneath you – or as you lounge on the nets while gently floating over a reef. You will be instantly hooked..

McCONAGHY 75′ Catamaran

McConaghy 75 Multihull

The McConaghy 75 catamaran provides enviable speeds, an appealing flybridge and living accommodations like few other yachts. Sailors who love to go fast, prefer expansive social spaces and commanding views of a flybridge have few choices. Most yachts in this segment weigh twice as much and need to motor in light air. Not the MC75. She has proven to sail at windspeed in under 10 knots.

Unrivalled Quality built by the World’s Best Yard

The McConaghy 75 multihull is built at McConaghy’s high tech plant and is constructed only of the finest materials. The experienced superyacht builder crafts the boat from vacuum-infusion Epoxy Carbon-hybrid composites. A foam core assures immense strength, stiffness and light weight. The yard which is highly experienced in the fabrication of the world’s fastest super maxi racing yachts employs the same techniques to build the stunning MC75.

McConaghy 60 Multihull

So what Sets the McConaghy 75 catamaran Apart form the Rest?

Lets start with the safe, push button control, high aspect ratio centerboards. Unlike many other high-performance catamarans – the MC75 has been designed and engineered with safety as its core parameter. Potentially hazardous daggerboards which could create a collision hull breach have been avoided. McConaghy has replaced them by a simple but highly effective push-button centerboard system. This is a first in this luxury multihull market segment. In the retracted position the centerboard is completely flush with the hull, yet full deployed a high aspect draft of nearly 9’ rivals the most efficient windward foils. In case of striking an underwater object, the centerboards automatically retract and avoid damage to the hull structure.

The McConaghy 75 catamaran also has no front crossbeam, similar to the last generation of America’s Cup foiling catamarans. The McConaghy 75’s stiffness and full carbon longeron allow for this elimination, which further lightens this amazing yacht.

Interior Design and Unique Features

Similar to her smaller sisters the McConaghy 75 multihull is a true luxury Grand Prix style yacht and has a multitude of innovative features. Consequently she has completely opening, all glass aft salon doors and giant sliding side salon windows. This means that most of the time, even in pouring rain you can enjoy a completely open social platform with full protection from the elements.

As the rest of the McConaghy multihull range the interior of the MC75 is top class. The builder only utilizes the finest woods and hardware to uncompromising high-quality standards. Design Unlimited have have created a variety of fully customizable layouts to choose from.

Sunreef 100 Sail Catamaran

For Sunreef Yachts, size matters. Over the past few years, the Polish shipyard has steadily been bolstering its fleet with large and luxurious catamarans. The latest one spans a lofty 100 feet.

Nicknamed the “mega-cat,” the Sunreef 100 was designed in-house and joins the yard’s ever-expanding line of sailing multihulls that runs the gamut from a nimble 50-footer all the way up to a spacious 80-footer . Sunreef says its newest craft is made for cruising worldwide in total luxury, and judging by its specs, it’ll have plenty of room to accommodate the high life.

Built in composite, the cat sports a sleek silhouette and clean lines that reflect Sunreef’s DNA. It’s equipped with twin 280 hp engines and a stately sail to supplement propulsion. This not only increases the Sunreef 100’s efficiency but also makes it more eco-friendly.

The spacious interior is fully customizable, of course.  Sunreef Yachts

The vessel’s 42-foot beam creates an impressive living space that measures just shy of 4,700 square feet. The customizable interior features luxe accommodation for 12 guests and owners can opt to incorporate a spa area, office, bar and/or fitness room.

Outside, the vessel sports a large flybridge and bow terrace for alfresco wining and dining. It’s also equipped with a hydraulic platform aft that doubles as a beach club when lowered for seaside entertaining. Elsewhere, there is a garage that can store a pair of Jetskis.

The debut of the Sunreef 100 comes shortly after the yard delivered the ultra-modern 80-foot Great White to tennis star Rafael Nadal and signals its commitment toward this new type of multihull.

Sunreef isn’t the only yacht builder taking things bigger, either. Catamarans have slowly been getting larger and more luxurious . For proof, look no further than recent launches such as Lagoon’s Sixty 7 ,  Horizon’s PC74 and the Aquila 70 .

It looks like there’ll be plenty more mega-cats prowling the seas.

Breaking News

Florida news | rep. carolina amesty notarized document that teacher says he never signed | special report, florida news, florida news | go inside research boat that studies florida’s overheated corals.

The Coral Reef II is docked in Miami on March 13, 2024. The research team left that morning for Key Largo.(Tampa Bay Times)

While you might first notice the glossy super yachts or a fishing trawler on the Miami River, there’s also an 80-foot vessel packed not with partiers, but scientists, trying to protect the coral offshore.

Bridget Coughlin, the CEO of the Chicago-based Shedd Aquarium, said their research vessel named the Coral Reef II is docked in Miami because of the diversity of marine life in the area.

“We teach climate change through empathy with animals,” said Coughlin. “If you talk about how otters are starving, that empathy for that otter is going to catalyze you to act.”

The vessel can go out to sea for three weeks at a time and can travel as far south as the Dominican Republic. The researchers study a plethora of animals including queen conch, endangered rock iguanas, sharks and climate change’s impact on the coral reef. From March through October, the crew often works days that stretch from 7 a.m. to midnight.

How to come aboard the research vessel

The Coral Reef II also acts as a live-in laboratory for aspiring marine biologists. High school and college students can go on a weeks-long journey that includes snorkeling in crystal-clear water with Caribbean reef sharks and working side-by-side with scientists. Chuck Knapp, a 30-year employee of Shedd and the head of conservation on the vessel, said he got his start that way.

Rep. Carolina Amesty notarized document that teacher says he never signed

“I was originally a high school marine biology student back on the boat as a 17-year-old in the late ‘80s so it’s been a thrill of a lifetime to come back,” Knapp, who gave a tour of the vessel in the video said.

This summer, high schoolers will be taking a trip to the Bahamas to learn about how to protect dolphins, snorkel shipwrecks and observe firsthand from Shedd’s shark research biologist.

Conducting research on coral reefs bleaching

One of the most unique parts of the vessel is its live well system, which consists of large built-in tanks at the front of the boat filled with seawater.

These mini aquariums are a safe harbor for wildlife that scientists are trying to study or move. The live well system makes it easy to scoop marine life like coral up, perform heat stress tests and return them back to sea in hours.

Ross Cunning, a coral biologist with Shedd, said researchers can use technology onboard to test how well the coral absorbs sunlight and observe what temperature and speed cause corals to bleach.

Mark Schick, the senior director of animal operations on the Coral Reef II research vessel owned by Shedd aquarium, dumps water overboard. (Tampa Bay Times)

Even two corals of the same species might bleach at different speeds, and they’re looking for the most heat tolerant coral, Cunning said.

Last summer he worked alongside South Florida research groups, like the University of Miami, the Coral Restoration Foundation, and Reef Renewal to test snippets of these baby corals in nurseries that have been growing in higher water temperatures.

“Finding interventions to boost the heat tolerance in coral reefs is more important than ever,” Cunning said. “But the most critical thing we need to do is stop climate change.

“All the research in the world will not boost coral heat tolerance enough to cope with oceans that continue warming. We must stop the root of the problem and stop greenhouse gas emissions as quickly as possible.”

Man dead, woman rescued after falling down 80-foot cliff in UTV at Kentucky adventure park

80 ft trimaran

A man has died and a woman was injured after a UTV accident in a Stanton, Kentucky adventure park.

In a statement on social media, Powell County Search & Rescue said reports came in around 8:40 p.m. Sunday March 17 of two people who were making their way to the parking lot at Hollerwood Off-Road Adventure Park in a UTV, or an off-road vehicle, when they lost control and fell off an 80-foot multi-pitch cliff.

Powell County, Kentucky is about 49 miles east of Lexington. The county is also home to Red River Gorge , a federally-designated National Geological Area, National Natural Landmark, National Archaeological District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Red River Gorge is a popular destination for hiking, fishing, camping and rock climbing.

Woman in UTV accident was saved by rescue crews and bystanders

The female victim survived the fall and was able to call 911 herself, telling dispatchers she was trapped inside the vehicle and that the male victim had been ejected.

Numerous emergency and rescue crews, as well a civilian bystanders went to search the different trails via UTV. One team was able to locate the woman, and a paramedic was able to set up an improvised rope system to get down to her. Eventually, with the help of multiple rope systems, rescuers were able to take her out of the vehicle, where she was moved into an air ambulance.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene, Powell County Search & Rescue said in a statement. No further update was given on the woman's status, and the identities of the man and woman have not yet been publicly released.
