The RS200 is considered one of the most popular double handed dinghies in existence. Since 1995 it has become a staple for those that want to enjoy or get into dinghy sailing.

{{boat-info="/boats/hobie-16"}}

The Hobie 16 is one of the most famous multihull sailboats for those that enjoy a sailing dinghy. Why Are 2-Person Sailboats Great Boats?

No matter what your desired sailing adventure is there are plenty of sailboats that are geared towards an easy setup and sailing experience. For boats that are designed with two people in mind it makes it sound like it is more difficult to handle but that is not the case.

Boats that are capable for two people sailing can generally be handled by one person but the performance is improved with the addition of the second person. The type of boat will also make a difference and if it has anything equipped such as automation systems. Below are some reasons why these boats are best for beginners or those that want an easier time on the water.

Sailing is Easier

Dinghies usually are meant for racing but they offer you first hand experience on how a boat should move in the water. Do not be afraid of the occurrence of capsizing in these boats.

In fact it is an integral part of the experience that will give you real time feedback on what went wrong. As for pocket cruisers or daysailers you do not want to capsize these so make an effort to control the stability as best as you can.

Rigging Setup is Seamless

For smaller boats that you can move on a trailer they usually can be put together in pieces. This makes setting up and breaking down a simple process that is great for storage.

When you are sailing and are newer to the experience you want something that is simple while operating in real time. You will likely want to handle something that does not take rocket science to explain.

Compact Size

Bigger sailboats are a little harder to steer so that is why it is best to go for something less than 30 feet with two people. This gives you plenty of room without compromising comfort.

The most ideal size ranges for two people are between 14 and 24 feet but it largely depends on the type of boat you are using. Some sailors can even handle boats ranging 45 feet and up but it all depends on your experience and intended use.

Multiple Sails

The mainsail is all you need to learn the basics of sailing but some boats might be equipped with more sails. This might mean your boat is a sloop rig which has two sails.

If you have more sails it would not hurt to have a second person on board to help with the action of raising and lowering of them. An automation system would greatly help this situation.

Many boats have various options for steering. These include tiller and wheel steering which should be obvious when checking out the boat upon a potential purchase.

If your boat has tiller steering it is best to get a feel for how the boat is while you are sailing. However you should go for what is most comfortable to you when you are the one operating it the most.

Best for Getting Parts

Since some boats are generally smaller for two people that means it is easier to acquire boat parts for maintenance. There are more boat parts in stock for smaller boats since they are more common which means you will have less of a headache and downtime for sailing.

There might even be a good chance you can find them cheaper on a marketplace online. Some boats might be totaled at a shipyard and you can find parts cheaper than paying for new ones outright.

Best Prices

Since 2-person sailboats are generally smaller they are usually are less expensive than other larger boats. If you are able to find them used they are even better at fitting within your budget depending on that boat brand.

You can expect to pay less than $20,000 for many top quality 2-person sailboats. This all depends on the condition of the boat and how new it is upon you purchasing it. This could range much higher depending on additions to the boat and the brand.

Are 2-Person Sailboats Good for Families?

As the name suggests it would not really be ideal to have a boat that is meant to hold only two people. But some of the options mentioned above are large enough to hold roughly four people and are great for the family.

Depending on how you intend to use your sailboat can make a difference as well. Some boats can still be considered family boats if they are commonly used within the family.

What Size is Best for 2-Person Sailboats?

Depending on the activity you are going to experience on the water will affect what size boat you are needing. For sailing dinghies those are usually used for racing since speed is priority.

If you are wanting to cruise without having too much else going on then something around 25 feet would be great. Families that are wanting a little more room but still be able to handle the boat with two people can likely find sailboats ranging up to 45 feet that are easy to sail.

There is not really a science that points to the perfect length for 2-person sailing. This all comes down to how confident you are in your sailing abilities and how easy it is to operate the boat in comfortable conditions.

Features to Consider on 2-Person Sailboats

For most one or two person boats there are a handful of features that can make your life easier while sailing. The good news for most 2-person sailboats is that they can likely be operated by one person.

Any added features or design of the boat might make an impact if the other person on board is not used to the setup. Here are some added features that will make a difference but keep in mind that they might not accommodate a small sailboat like a racing dinghy.

System Automation

There are plenty of automatic conveniences to add to your boat. These include autopilot and an electric windlass. A roller furling or even a radar can also make a huge impact to your sailing adventure.

A lot of these features come in handy when the weather turns rough or the tide becomes fierce. It is also great to have these if the other person on board with you is new to sailing or is a small child.

Having a boat equipped with GPS is another option for automation even if you think you know your way around the area. Consider adding one to your boat if you plan on taking it out in moderate conditions that might take you off of the intended path.

Multihulls by default are some of the safest sailboats out there due to their stability. This is true but it also depends on the design of the boat and how it is being used.

Most 2-person sailboats are going to have great stability. If it is a small sailboat that is equipped with a lateen rig it will likely have slightly better stability than other racing dinghies. However pocket cruisers are designed to be more stable and are great for two people wanting to enjoy a cruise.

In the event that something happens you should have a safety tether or a life jacket while on board. Even with two people on board you might not be immune to falling off your boat if the conditions get rough. You should also consider having an emergency radio and a way to ping your location in case things to go bad.

Types of Sails

The sail area on a boat makes a big impact on the performance. This is also why getting the right sails are important.

You should aim to have a combination of a gaff sail and a bermuda sail to optimize performance. Both of these together if applicable are the perfect blend for many windy conditions.

Rigging Setup

There are numerous types of rigs to consider on your boat. A lateen rig has a different shape than a gaff rig and will affect the performance based on the wind.

A gaff rig is best for one or two people on board due to it being easier to sail with an easier set up. No matter what rig setup you have you should know how to properly set up the sails and safely operate while in motion.

What is behind the surge in new 60ft plus yacht designs and can you sail one safely without pro crew?

  • Toby Hodges
  • January 13, 2017

New yacht design has taken a giant leap in average length. Toby Hodges reports on the boom in big boats

Oyster 625

Looking along the row of new yachts berthed stern-to at Cannes Boat Show in September, it seems impossible that just a few years ago a yard might hold up its 55-footer as the flagship of its fleet. In 2016, it’s the new yachts between 55ft and 80ft from the production yards that really stand out. So what has changed? Why the sudden surge in new large yachts and is it really possible to sail them without professional crew?

The 60ft plus market represents only around 120 yachts worldwide per year, but according to Oyster CEO David Tydeman, there is a need for variety. “Where Beneteau likes the fact that we series-build €5m boats, we like the fact that Beneteau does €1m series builds,” he says. “It brings people into the industry.”

Customers range from those wanting short-term sailing holidays and second home use, to those exercising long held dreams to sail offshore in the utmost comfort. It’s a wide range of people being targeted by a wide range of brands and from the list of boats yet to be launched, it’s evident that the majority of builders have bet against this size segment being a passing fad.

Who is building new yachts over 60ft?

The volume production yards have been growing their flagship models, mostly launched in the last year or two, to fulfil demand in the 55-65ft sector. This is perhaps indicative of an increasing number of impulsive buyers on today’s new yacht market; those who don’t want to wait for a couple of years for their yacht are going to be more attracted to the volume-built boats.

Models over 65ft are typically still the domain of luxury bluewater cruising brands, such as Oyster and Contest; prestige brands, such as CNB and Euphoria; or performance semi-custom designs from the likes of Swan, Solaris, Mylius and Advanced Yachts. Highlights include X-Yachts’s 65ft X6 (see X6 on test ), the Grand Soleil 58 Performance; Mylius’ striking new 76; the Turkish Euphoria 68 (see Euphoria 68 on test ) and the luxurious new Contest 67CS ( see video review here ), not to mention the new Oysters 675 and 745.

Contest 67CS: The owner of this first 67CS started sailing in Norway in September 2009, aged 40. Since then he has owned two yachts, completed an ARC crossing and sailed with his wife in the Caribbean five times a year. “We were looking for a bigger yacht for longer stays but which we can still sail with the two of us.” They plan to sail the boat themselves, but add that for “maintenance and preparations it is smart to have professionals who know our Contest 67CS.”

At the 60ft plus size range, yards have to be flexible to be competitive. Prospective buyers expect their yachts to be semi-customised; rather than simply ticking options boxes, they want the yard to listen to their individual choices, styles and needs.

Volume producers will offer a lengthy list of layouts, fabrics and finishes, while the high-end builders will typically offer major hull variations, including different transom designs, rig options, and appendage types, with interior layouts only really constrained by watertight bulkheads. Those braving the first of a new model line may get extra privileges in this respect.

Mylius 76

Mylius 76: In many ways, Mylius’s yachts are a total contrast to the large, luxury cruising yachts of northern European yards. The all-carbon builds are super-minimalist throughout; modern turbo-charged Italian head-turners for smoking across the Med in style and enjoying the odd regatta. Pictured right is the flush-deck version. The deck saloon model (far right interiors) is novel and niche – a fascinating combination of space, speed and style.

High volume production

Of the volume yards, Hanse arguably led the way with its 630e back in 2006, 70 of which were built. Equally impressive is that the German yard then went on to sell 175 of its 575 in the last four years. This year Hanse launched the 675, its largest volume production yacht to date.

Hanse 675 interior

Hanse consistently wows with its loft-style interiors – more like a luxury apartment in fact on this, its largest model yet, the new 675.

Groupe Beneteau brands all now have yachts in the 60ft plus size range. The Bordeaux 60 caused a stir when it launched in 2008 – hull number 46 is in build – bringing trappings of superyacht glamour to the production market. The follow-up CNB 76 made a striking debut at Cannes in 2013. This contemporary Briand design uses an innovative construction method to reduce build time and cost. Seventeen of the €2m 76s have now sold, leading CNB to commission designs for a new smaller sister, the 66 (see page 33). To give some indication as to the demand at this size, CNB has already sold eight of the smaller yachts despite only releasing initial designs in September, and has also just announced it will take on 100 more workers to meet demand.

CNB 76

CNB 76: The 76 is a powerful yet elegant yacht with a well-camouflaged deck saloon, proper crew accommodation and a practical tender garage. A modular build scheme allows CNB to construct the entire interior of the 76 outside of the hull, dramatically reducing build time (to six months) and cost. The win-win result is superyacht styling and engineering, yet with a serial production price starting at €2m.

Unlike CNB, which is originally a builder of large custom yachts, the other volume production yards and Groupe Beneteau brands are upsizing. Superyacht designers Philippe Briand and Andrew Winch collaborated to produce one of the most successful of these – the Jeanneau 64 launched in 2014. It marries the worlds of big boat design, luxury and comfort with production boat pricing – its base price was kept below €1m – offering 10ft more yacht than an equivalent-priced semi-custom model.

Sister brand Beneteau has now followed suit with its Oceanis Yachts 62 this year. This is the first of a new luxury range from 53-73ft for which Beneteau went to a motorboat designer to find new styling solutions. The result is a bold look and a host of new comfort solutions throughout. Also, the goal with the pricing was even more ambitious than Jeanneau – its €650,000 base price shows how competitive pricing has become, even at this size level.

Oceanis Yachts 62

Oceanis Yachts 62: Beneteau is arguably the most innovative production yacht brand. Here it’s taken ideas and styling from its motorboat side to create this first of an entirely new line. The 62 brings a commendable feeling of luxury both on deck and below, plus has a proper tender launching solution for a Williams Jet Rib. The crunch part? Its base price starts at just €650,000.

Dufour will have a new 63ft flagship as of January, which, like the Oceanis Yachts, is the first of a new premium-end ‘Exclusive’ range.

All of which leaves Bavaria as the last big volume yard without a 60-footer. This is mainly down to its in-line production method, which has, to date, limited the maximum length of yacht it can build. However this summer Bavaria changed the set-up of one of its production lines to address this limitation, so we can presume that it’s only a question of time before the largest sailing Bavaria model yet is announced.

The practicalities

Large yachts are getting ever easier to handle. Push-button electrics and hydraulics that allow loads to be managed reliably have created new possibilities for managing sizable yachts short-handed. Thrusters – both bow and stern – are the norm at this size and can alleviate concerns with mooring, while advances in deck-gear technology have made sail-handling much easier.

As in the car industry, space has become king. Added length in yachts can bring increased comfort, elegance and speed, but there are downsides. With extra volume and weight comes a linear increase in the size and cost of each bit of deck gear and rigging needed to bear the extra loads.

Sailing a push-button power-assisted yacht might be a one-person affair, but managing and maintaining it is a different prospect altogether. Large yachts increase the crew’s dependence on powered systems and machinery, from gensets, watermakers, air con and thrusters to the hydraulics needed to operate winches, sail systems, garage doors etc. Keeping such a yacht shipshape is likely to involve a great deal of time afloat servicing machinery, or regular shore periods and pit stops. The less mechanically minded owners will probably need to employ a skipper or paid hand for this purpose.

Solaris 58

Solaris: Once a custom yacht builder, Solaris has become a serial manufacturer of premium performance cruisers. Its range now spans from 37-72ft, with an Acebal-designed 55 and 68 in the pipeline.

Need for crew?

Up until 2011, when Hallberg-Rassy brought out its HR64, a yacht that was designed specifically for two people to sail and manage, I would have said that 57ft was the transition point from owner-operated yacht to crewed yacht. But yachts have continued to grow since then.

Skip Novak, who runs two expedition yachts – one 54ft and the other 74ft – says: “We can do things with [the 54ft] Pelagic that we wouldn’t dare do with Pelagic Australis . Pelagic is ‘man-handleable’, while the big boat at 74ft and 55 tonnes displacement is not. The systems on the smaller boat are by nature simpler, and the cruises usually are more trouble-free technically.”

Most new yachts over the 55ft mark have the option for a crew cabin of some sort. The big question is, are you happy sharing your yacht with paid hands? For temporary quarters, during a short charter for example, the forepeak-style box that is self-contained away from the rest of the accommodation may be all that is required in terms of accommodation. But for any owners seeking a longer-term crew – and wishing to retain reliable crew for any period of time – a more comfortable arrangement within the interior, like the use of a Pullman cabin, is necessary.

The current Oyster range spans the crossover between owner-operated yachts and crewed yachts, which helps to illustrate where the actual dividing line between the two might lie. For example, none of the 20 Oyster 625 owners uses a skipper full-time, although three of the 20 use skippers for when the boat is in charter mode. The new 675, which has been developed as a larger version of the 625, is also designed to be a yacht that can be owner-run. The new 745 on the other hand, which also launched this September, is designed to be run with two professional crew.

I sailed with Tim and Sybilla Beebe six years ago on a passage test of an Oyster 575 from Palma to Spain. They have since run an Oyster 68, a 72 and Tim is currently skippering Eddie Jordan’s Oyster 885, Lush. We discussed at what size level an owner should be thinking about employing a full-time crew.

“Firstly it’s dependent on experience,” says Beebe. “Can the owner sail the boat safely and do they want the responsibility? I agree that after 60ft, the time spent on upkeep starts to outweigh the enjoyment of it… unless you are living on it full-time.

“There are companies that will look after a 60ft boat and have it ready for owners when they arrive,” Beebe continued. “The amount of time needs to flexible. You can allot time for cleaning – inside and out – but maintenance must be flexible. There are always surprises.”

So where might a potential new owner be caught out? “The basic maintenance to keep the boat running is not too bad on a 60-footer but it’s the little bits that might get overlooked, which can quickly add up. You have to stay on top of everything. Winch maintenance, for example, might surprise the average new owner: to properly service all the winches takes a good deal of time – and is a once-a-season job.”

What advice would Beebe give owners of 60-70-footers looking to employ and keep a good crew? “Maintaining good relations is key. You all have to get on in a small space. From my experience, forward planning is nice to have, plus adequate time with guests off the boat for maintenance. Of course the occasional day off doesn’t go amiss either.”

Case study: Oyster 745 for bluewater cruising with family and friends

Henrik Nyman has sailed all his life on a variety of different sized boats, including owning and chartering various yachts and is now upgrading from an Oyster 625 to a 745 for bluewater cruising with friends and family. Why move to a yacht that needs crew? “Size alone is not a factor. For me, quality, engineering and function were my drivers… I thought 60ft was the maximum I could handle without crew, but in fact I feel that the 745 should be no trouble mainly due to very well thought-out functions and engineering. Handling is one part, but also you want crew for comfort, to go to the supermarket, some meals, formalities etc… I can sail basically alone but I want a good deckhand, mainly for safety purposes and for maintenance as well. “My biggest concern is that the equipment installed does not meet the same quality as the yacht itself. My experience from the 625 is that the majority if not all warranty issues are caused by third party installations.”

Oyster 745

Case study: Discovery 67 – trading up for extra space

Simon Phillips is a highly experienced cruising and racing sailor, who has gradually scaled up in size from a Sonata, a Sadler 29, a Hanse 47e and a Discovery 55. He bought his 67ft Sapphire 2 of London this June and his main reason for trading up was to gain space. “ Sapphire is 40 per cent larger inside which makes a big difference if you’re planning to spend 18 to 24 months on board. My wife and I are actively planning for the World ARC.” Phillips hasn’t used a professional crew before, but has employed delivery companies to do short deliveries due to time pressures. He normally sails with friends and contacts. “Sapphire is much more technical than the Discovery 55. Her size requires more planning and thought on where you can go etc. While it is possible to sail the yacht single-handed you really need one crew on the helm and three on lines to come alongside in any sort of windy and tidal conditions.”

Vismara 62: Vismara is a custom carbon yacht builder that has now introduced some semi-custom series. The V62 is based on the success of the Mark Mills designed racer-cruiser SuperNikka . A mould was taken from her hull and adapted to make it more cruiser friendly.

Hallberg-Rassy 64

Hallberg-Rassy 64: “Push button controls are the only way you could handle a boat of this size without a big crew and our owners absolutely don’t want that,” said Magnus Rassy at the time of our HR64 test. “A huge amount of care has gone into making a boat that will be easy to sail long-distance, to maintain and to continue to use when things stop working.”

Dufour 63 Exclusive

Dufour 63 Exclusive: Due to launch at the Düsseldorf Boat Show in 2017, Dufour’s new flagship is a response to those from Beneteau, Jeanneau and Hanse and is the first of its new Exclusive range. The 63 is a yacht that maximises exterior comfort with a 5m long cockpit and exterior galley option alongside a tender garage.

CNB 66

CNB 66: The Bordeaux 60 and CNB 76 have both been true success stories. This 66 is very much the smaller sister to the 76 and looks set to replace the 60. “With the 66 the idea was to be able to sail without crew,” says CNB’s Thomas Gailly. “So we wanted it to be very simple, with no lift keel option or retracting anchor arm – easy to maintain and use.”

Baltic 67

Baltic 67: Over the past few years, Baltic Yachts has launched some of the finest new carbon superyachts, but its recent announcement of a new serially produced model marks a return to the more moderate-sized fast cruisers it was known for in the past.

Advanced Yachts 62

Advanced Yachts 62: Advanced Yachts uses some of the leading design firms to represent Italian luxury performance at its best, with models from 44-100ft. And this new A62 looks simply sensational.

Amel 64

Amel 64: This is one of the first 60+ footers truly designed for a couple only for bluewater cruising.

Find out more here – or in the videos below.

Below is the video of our two day liveaboard test aboard the smaller sister Amel 55, a model which launched at a similar time to the 64 and shares her updated design features.

The Best Private Yacht Charters for Small Groups

While much of the cruise industry halted operations in the last year , it didn't mean that all sailings stopped. For families or pandemic-era bubble groups who wanted a sunny getaway on the water, a trend emerged: renting out entire yachts , complete with crew, for a new kind of custom sailing.

Exploring destinations around the world on a private yacht with your kids, and maybe another family or two, is both a luxurious and practical way to travel these days. The sea turns into your personal playground, and your captain will steer you to islets and beaches away from the crowds. On board, you can spend time together in a pleasant, contained environment—plus, no one has to cook. Bring on the movies and board games!

Here are our favorite family-friendly yachts available for private charter around the world.

Schooner America 2.0 »

Offering our most premium sailing experience in New York City, the Schooner America 2.0 is the newest, largest, and most elegant sailing vessel designed for our operation. Added to the fleet in 2010, America 2.0 offers the most exceptional day sailing one can find in New York Harbor. She is the fastest, most refined, and the most comfortable sailing vessel in our fleet and perfect to sail NYC!

The past meets the future aboard Classic Harbor Line’s Schooner America 2.0 . She is modeled after one of the most famous maritime icons of all time, the winner of the first “America’s Cup” of 1851, Schooner America . The “2.0” aspect of the vessel refers to the eco-friendly aspect of her cutting-edge construction by the designers at Scarano Boat Building, of Albany, New York . Rather than finding a diesel-consuming engine room below decks, you find a large battery bank providing electric propulsion. If you peeled away her hull, you find an extremely durable 3-layered composite of a light wood sandwiching an aluminum honeycomb instead a heavy, all wood vessel built from 100’s of trees. In place of a heavy wooden rig aloft, you find carbon-fiber masts, booms, and gaffs. Together, these strengthening and lightening components of construction help America 2.0 sail effortlessly and with less environmental impact.

From hoisting the sails, to serving beverages, to taking the time to answer your questions about the sights you are viewing, our crew aims for you to leave our boats feeling like you were always in great hands, and having made some new New York friends. We offer public trips for individuals, couples, families, and small groups, as well as private boat charters where you can customize the route, experience, and dining options for your guests.

The Yacht Manhattan & Manhattan II»

For power boat fans, the luxurious Yacht Manhattan & Manhattan II are the real gems amongst the New York Harbor boat tours . They are 1920s style, mahogany-trimmed “commuter” yachts that cruise with far fewer passengers than any other Manhattan sightseeing tour boat. Their ticketed harbor cruises average only about 20-100 guests per cruise. They have two regular routes on their ticketed cruises. One of the most unique is a 2.75 hour cruise that encircles the entire island of Manhattan, passing under 18 different bridges, and stopping briefly at the Statue of Liberty. The shorter 1.5 hour cruise is offered regularly during the afternoon, at sunset, and for stellar city lights cruises. This cruise on the Manhattan and Manhattan II captures all the key waterfront sites of the New York Harbor: the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Battery Park, the Financial District Skyline, the Brooklyn Bridge, the East River and the United Nations Building, along with the numerous other landmarks of the Upper New York Harbor.

All of these cruises include a complimentary beverage from the teak and mahogany bar within the climate-controlled, sky-lit solarium. You can ride indoors or outdoors in absolute luxury and comfort year round. Aside from the yacht Manhattan’s regular ticketed schedule, you can also take advantage of many unique special event cruises. Each year there is a Mother’s Day Brunch Cruise, a Fourth of July Fireworks Cruise, a series of Fall Foliage boat rides up the Hudson River, a Wine Tasting Series, cruises offering specialty tours of New York Harbor, the only Around Manhattan Architecture Tour, and let us not forget a series of “Full Day Cruises” offering full day excursions to destinations on the Hudson River. Also, look for themed cruises to pop up throughout the year in the special events section of this home page.

Schooner Adirondack »

For the sailing enthusiast, a great way to take advantage of the New York Harbor sights is by sailing, aboard the elegant schooner: The Schooner Adirondack , our 80-foot wooden boat sails daily from Chelsea Piers May through November. She most commonly offers 2-hour day sails and sunset sails throughout the day with guaranteed passes by the Statue of Liberty. The Day Sails are perfect for families and guests interested in seeing the sites. These sails will always feature great views of the Lower Manhattan Skyline and Ellis Island, as well as complimentary beer, wine, Champagne and sodas. Wind and tide permitting, you may find yourself encircling Governor’s Island, or doing a short pass up the East River to get up close to the Brooklyn Bridge. Our Sunset Sail on the Adirondack is great for couples or co-workers looking to unwind after work. Another great NY Harbor sail for the romantic couple or a group of friends looking to have a fun night out on the water is the Schooner Adirondack’s City Lights Sail. This sail is truly magnificent and a local favorite. These sunset sails and city lights sails feature complimentary soda, water, beer, wine, and Champagne.

Catalina 30

The Catalina 30 deck forms a very functional boarding space. Even though they first appeared on the market in 1972 they still continue to sail in the seas. Furthermore, these reliable fiberglass models are the most common ones in terms of production. The galley of Catalina 30 has large counter space and two private double cabins, one forward (V-berth) and one aft. The forward cabin is a V-berth formation. Also, the sofa converts and forms two more berths on the starboard side. It is possible to find a good and properly maintained Catalina 30 with the price of $15,000.

The old-time classic Pearson 34 will give you the appropriate space you need in order to sail for a long time offshore. She has spacious accommodations and is easy to handle making her ideal for enjoying the joys of cruising. Her aft sections are full which increases sail carrying power and her forward sections are moderately full so as to provide buoyancy. A classic arrangement plan is used for the below decks resulting in the best use of space.

Oceanis 311

The Oceanis 311 is a practical and roomy high-performance cruiser and racer. She can accommodate 6 persons and has 2 cabins placed below her deck. The accommodation layouts have a double-berth cabin on the port side aft and a double V-berth in the forepeak. The galley and WC are situated on the port side, the small navigation area is situated on the starboard, and the table on the centreline. As for the headroom, it’s around 6 ft. The boat doesn’t have a convertible saloon but has a convertible settee which forms two single berths. Lastly, the 311 combines appropriate internal volume and a fast hull, making it ideal for long offshore passages.

Beneteau First 31.7

This sailboat has achieved the right balance between sailing performance and accommodation. This family of Beneteau’s First sailboats designed by the Finot Group is highly appreciated among sailors for their resistance and high-performance. The First 31.7 features a high freeboard, a self-bailing cockpit, and a wide transom. Her design is simple and efficient, provides enough room for provisions which makes it great for long passages. Moreover, the 31.7 model is the more compact design of the Beneteau First 40.7 model. Its large beam provides plenty of interior volume with a simple layout of 2 cabins and one head. The main cabin is in the V-berth forward and has approximately 6ft of standing headroom. The galley is situated to the port side and includes a sink, a stove, and a refrigerator. Aft of the boat is the second private cabin with standing headroom and a double berth.

Hallberg-Rassy 310

The Hallberg-Rassy 310 is a fast and easy-going boat with her simple design and her robust GRP construction which makes her great for ocean cruising. She is a 30ft monohull sloop and features a deck steeped mast configuration. Furthermore, it has a spacious and comfy interior including 2 cabins, enough space for storage, and an L sofa with a straight settee. You can find a properly maintained used Hallberg-Rassy 310 with approximately $160,000. She’s definitely included on our top list of 2-cabin cruisers/racers!

Furthermore, she has a large cockpit area that facilitates walking, relaxing, and dining on the deck. Her interior is equipped with two cabins and two bathrooms and has space to accommodate from 6 to 8 persons. The galley has all basic amenities such as a refrigerator, an oven as well as extra seating and countertop space. She is one of the sailboats that provide more than enough amenities for a long offshore sailing and she definitely worths the investment!

Peterson 44

The Peterson 44 is one of the best center-cockpit cruisers that can sail well in any wind, and she’s ideal for overnight cruising or day sailing. The sailboat has a split-cabin both fore and aft and a generally roomy and comfy interior without putting aside its excellent sailing capabilities. Through the passageway, to starboard and back, is the aft cabin, with a double berth and separate head with shower. The traditional main cabin is situated forward and includes a dinette to port and settee to starboard. Moreover, there’s a second head with a shower and a large V-berth. All these amenities and space combined with this seaworthy and easy-to-handle sailboat can’t let me without putting her on our list. On today’s market, you can find her from $100,00 to $125,000.

I've been very interested in the purchase of a larger boat, anywhere from 68ft to maybe even 86ft, but I love boating I just don't want to have a captain for my boat. What would be the largest boat anyone would reccomend that 2 people could take out on extended cruising. I live in North Miami and have always had the idea of crusing the Caribbean going island hopping, but have no desire to do so on with a captained boat. I've been reasearching the Marquis 65 and the Azimut 68s Open with a possible dream of perhaps an Azimut 86s, but feel that may be too big for 2 people to use with no captain. David

my grandfather and his buddy never had a problem with his 60 footer...You can prolly handle an 80' with 2 people just a person to drive the boat and a person on the sides to throw lines to people at the dock.....do you really need more people than that?

I have handled an 85´yacht with just one deckhand. However this is the easy part. To maintain and keep a boat of this size is a halftime job or more, so the time to enjoy the yachting becomes limited if you are on your own. I shouldn´t recommend bigger than 50-60´ if you are not happy to spend half the day washing down, repairing and maintaining all the stuff that comes with a larger yacht...

I agree with Lars. My wife and I can easily handle a 100' but we are professional crew whose job it is to maintain the boat. I wouldn't dream of having anything larger than 60' for personal use because of the workload it would demand in order to keep it well.

Castlerock

Castlerock Senior Member

I agree with Lars and Ken, we had a 54 foot trawler and before that we had a C&C 40. The difference in work load for the extra 14 feet is more than double. We had 2 of everything to fix and clean not to mention all of the plumbing, electric, washer and dryer, disposal, dishwasher etc... And when your done working on those things it takes the better part of a day to just clean the boat. I hired a local kid to work on the boat to help clean and give me a hand with things.

When you travel in the Bahamas and the Carribean, often a local guy will come down to the dock and ask if you want your boat washed. Usually they know what to do, and if they are good you can have them do maintenance jobs. That takes some of the pressure off, as the boat handling for two people is easy, but the care of it is not. Those boats you mention in the 65' - 68' range will be big enough to spend extended time on board, carry enough fuel for longer distances, be comfortable in 2-4' sea conditions and will not need crew. Your insurance company might not like the no crew part if you have not had much experience. Then you might have to have some crew on board for awhile. Tucker Fallon

Serecovery, If yuou plan to run a large yacht with just two crew (with you at the wheel and the other setting lines and fenders and the such) then equip the vessel with a bow and stern thruster. This way you can control the positioning of the bot while the crew does their work properly. I had both on a 61 footer and they were a real treat to use and keep the boat in place. 68-70 feet may be okay, 86 may be pushing it. Good luck. Capt Tom PS Some of us captains are fun to travel with. LoL

My husband and I have a 45 foot yacht, and think that is the perfect size for two people to handle. I suppose we could go up to 60 feet, but we really wouldn't want to go much bigger than that because we don't want to have a crew. A 45 footer, even, is lots of maintenance for two people when my husband works long hours.

Depending on the type of yacht and the equipment on board it is possible to go up to 70 feet comfortably. Most livaboard ocean crossing vessels are comfortable for a couple to handle as they come with all the appropriate items and design characteristics needed

8 Affordable Small Boats With Several Beds (With Pictures)

' src=

When you are looking for a boat for overnight travel, you will want to make sure that you have a place to sleep.

If you only plan on spending a few nights on the boat, a boat that offers two beds will likely be perfect for your needs.

A small boat with two beds is the perfect size for overnight trips with the family.

Table of Contents

8 Great Boat With Sleeping Areas (For Two Persons)

When you are shopping for boats that feature sleeping areas, you will want to know the basics.

When looking for a bed or sleeping area on a watercraft, it is often referred to as a “berth”. These can be similarly sized to traditional beds.

In a listing, you could be looking at a “queen birth” which would be similar in size to a queen-sized bed.

These may or may not be featured in their own individual cabins. If you need the privacy of an individual cabin you will want to make sure this is specified that way.

Having a place to sleep aboard your vessel is not only good for overnight trips.

Having a bed aboard allows for naps or the ability to lie down if you happen to become ill. This can make a huge difference in comfort while trying to get back to shore.

6 Boats With Two Berths:

Depending on what type of boat you are looking for, you should be able to find plenty of options with two beds.

Sailboats are often available with plenty of cabin space that makes living or overnight trips more comfortable.

One of the luxuries that are often included is plenty of sleeping space. This can include multiple berths.

Cruisers are also a great boat when it comes to cabin space.

These boats offer luxurious cabin space even on smaller vessels. Cruisers also have on deck seating in case you want to sit out on the deck while you are motoring.

These cruisers could be single or multi-hulled vessels.

There is often more space and privacy on a catamaran and other options of multi-hulled vessel than on a single-hulled vessel.

Sleeping is also easier on a multi-hulled vessel because the engines are less likely to be built right into the living space.

Not only are they more spacious and quiet, but they are often more steady and safe. There are a lot of benefits to a multi-hulled vessel. They are, however, more costly.

1. Catalina 355:

There is a berth in the owner’s cabin that comes with an innerspring mattress and an electric lift that can offer comfortable seating for activities such as reading or watching television.

There is an aft cabin berth that features an innerspring mattress as well.

This boat also offers a head that has a hot and cold shower as well as a toilet.

2. Regal Express Cruiser:

2 person yacht

The Regal Express Cruiser offers many well thought out features that make this vessel perfect for comfortable gatherings of friends and family.

This boat offers an ultra lounge that features seating that you can both lie down or sit up on.

This vessel’s deck is also a single level. This allows for everyone to be on the same level with the same view.

The tower can be lowered mechanically in case you need to go under a bridge or just tuck it down for other reasons. This is easy and efficient and can reduce time fiddling with a complex manual system.

The cabin features luxury leather and hardwoods that look attractive and sleek.

This boat also offers a queen-size berth in the front of the vessel that you can raise or lower for more space in the boat.

This bed can be queen or king-sized with an option to convert into oversized twin beds. This makes it easy to reconfigure your layout at needed.

3. Bavaria Easy 9.7:

2 person yacht

The Bavaria Easy 9.7 sailboat is a 32′ 7″ yacht that offers a comfortable cabin that is perfect for overnight travel.

This boat comes with a spacious deck that is not full of clutter which helps make it safe and easily maneuverable.

Despite its capacity, this boat can be manned by a crew as small as one to two people. This is ideal if you do not always plan to have your vessel at full capacity.

This vessel comes with two cabins that include a small galley, bathroom, and four berths.

This boat is perfect for taking multiple people out on the water and ensuring everyone’s comfort.

4. Leopard 40:

2 person yacht

If you are looking for even more space and luxury the Leopard 40 Catamaran offers the very best comfort.

This model features a forward-facing galley and a spacious owner’s cabin.

The cabins feature open designs that allow for more amenities and space without compromising the interior living space. This vessel is able to feature more interior space than other vessels of a similar size.

All these features are offered without compromising speed, agility or performance.

Depending on the layout, the Leopard 40 can feature 6 or 8  berths to offer the ultimate overnight comfort for multiple passengers.

This boat also allows for 2 heads and 2 showers and a full galley.

The utilization of both hulls makes sure that this boat is ideal for traveling on overnight journeys in ultimate style and comfort.

5. Four Winns Vista 255:

2 person yacht

Four Winns is a very popular brand when it comes to recreational boating. Famous for their deck boats and roundabouts, Four Winns also offer cruiser options.

The Four Winns Vista 255 features a spacious and innovative cockpit while also including a spacious cabin.

This boat is only 25′ 2″ long but allows for a capacity of 9 people as well as a cabin that can be used for lounging, dining, or entertaining. This cabin features a stand-up head as well as a breakfast center.

There’s a comfortable sleeping area for two people and it’s a very cozy space to relax during the day too.

This cabin is convertible to conserve space. This means that you can have whatever you need while still on a small vessel with high-quality performance.

In addition to the other features offered by this innovative cabin design, there is also a queen-sized mid-cabin berth and a spacious forward v-berth.

The benefit of a small convertible cabin is that you are not forced to buy a large vessel and you can go to more areas including shallower water. It also makes this vessel less expensive than the other listed options.

6. Nerea NY24:

2 person yacht

The Nerea Yacht NY24 is a luxurious option that features refined features. This boat features an inboard motor and a planing hull.

The deck on this vessel has an open layout with a sundeck perfect for relaxing under the warm sun and spending the day on the water with family.

This boat can fit between 6 to 8 people and is only 24 feet long.

Despite this boat being compact, it still offers plenty of features that are perfect for entertaining overnight. Even though the interior is only 7.35 meters long, it still features a large sofa that can be converted into a double berth.

If you do not one bed, the container sofa is designed to allow two people to sleep separately as well. It’s a comfortable sleeping area with two separate beds. Just what you need.

This vessel also offers two drawer refrigerators, a concealed sink, a concealed stove, a dinette that can extend into a sunbathing area, and an enclosed toilet.

The cabin has a lot of natural light thanks to two long windows on the sides of the boat as well as double sliding glass doors to allow easy access into the cabin.

2 Boats That Can Sleep Two:

If you do not need two separate beds but are instead looking for comfortable accommodations for two people that might include a couple, you will have some additional options.

Most boats that feature a cuddy cabin have enough space to sleep, two people.

This is a comfortable way to stay overnight on your vessel that might be smaller or more inexpensive.

Oftentimes you can change the cuddy cabins with the rearranging of cushions to create bench seating or other options.

The drawback to a cuddy cabin vessel is that you do not get the same amenities that the previous vessels offered.

This includes things such as a kitchen or shower.

You can still have a bathroom in a cuddy, but it will likely be portable and stow under your cuddy cushions.

7. Stingray 225 CR Cuddy Cabin:

2 person yacht

The Stingray 225 CR Cuddy Cabin is great for both safety and performance. This boat features a z-plane hull that allows it to raise and plane quicker than other hull designs.

This boat is small and is just about 23 feet long. This boat offers a spacious cockpit and cabin for such a small sporting boat.

Maximum passengers for this boat is 10 people and there is sleeping space available for 2 to 3.

The cabin featured on the boat has a v-berth as well as amenities. This cabin also is able to be locked to provide the necessary privacy.

This boat offers plenty of storage as well as amenities including a freshwater sink, stowaway portable head with level indicator, and an automatic fire extinguishing system.

Safety and comfort are the main priority in this small boat that is perfect for overnight boating.

8. Bayliner 742 Cuddy:

2 person yacht

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Bayliner boats are sleek and high performing boats that really focus on the small details.

Comfortable seating including a folding sun lounge is sure to please any passenger aboard. This vessel also features a co-pilot seat that can extend to form a chaise lounge.

This boat places a high focus on entertaining and includes features such as a cockpit entertainment center with built-in sink. There is also an optional cockpit table.

The cabin features sleeping space for two people with plenty of natural light from the skylights and ventilated portlights.

The deck features plenty of storage, even an in-floor locker for water sports equipment like skis and wakeboards.

You can also swim off the swim platform with telescoping ladder.

Necessary Equipment For Sleeping On The Boat

Simply having a boat that offers sleeping space is not enough. You will also want to make sure that your sleeping areas are comfortable.

This may seem self-explanatory, but you will want to make sure your berths feature clean sheets, warm blankets, and pillows.

Keeping linens and blankets on a boat is different than in a house.

A boat can be compared to a damp basement. When you have blankets in a wet and humid basement, you can get damp blankets that can even become moldy over time.

To combat this, there are a few options you can utilize.

One way to combat damp and musty blankets and linens are to make sure that you do not store them in the boat when you are not using it. Keeping them in a dry house is a great way to prevent this problem entirely.

This is not very effective if you plan a multiple-day trip and your boat accumulates a lot of moisture.

Making sure that you properly insulate your boat, or even investing in a dehumidifier can do wonders to combat damp and musty conditions.

Another good tip is to dry your blankets and other cushions out if they are wet or damp. You can do this by hanging them up inside the cabin, but is even more effective out in the sun.

You also want to make sure that your mattress itself doesn’t get damp. This can make sleep very uncomfortable.

Keeping your bedding dry at all times is key to having a clean and comfortable bed to fall into at night.

Make Sure To Be Prepared:

In addition to having the proper sleeping equipment, if you plan to spend longer than a few hours on your vessel you will want to make sure you are prepared in other ways as well.

If your boat doesn’t offer private cabins or other private areas, you can purchase a private changing room. These can be as simple as a pop-up changing area. This can be ideal for changing out of a wet swimsuit and into what you plan to sleep in.

You will also need other more practical things. Most of these options came with their own head, but if they didn’t, you will want to invest in one. This can be a simple portable option but will still be easier than possibly having to go to land every time nature calls.

It is also important that you have enough food and water. Water is very important to prevent dehydration while out in the sun. You will want to make sure that you pack enough water for everyone. If there is one thing that should be “over-packed” it should be water.

This is important for your health as well as your thirst.

You will also need food if you plan on traveling to a place where stopping somewhere for food is not a feasible option.

You also want to be prepared for the weather. Make sure you have the proper clothing for any weather occasion. Even on a warm summer day, nights can get cold out on the water. Make sure you have the proper long clothes and blankets.

Things like sunscreen and bug spray can also be life-saving while out on the water all day and night.

You will also want a flashlight for when it gets dark out. This will not only prevent you from waking the other passengers up but can help you save your boat battery from potential overuse.

Finally, emergency equipment should always be featured on your vessel. This includes a fire extinguisher, life jackets for every passenger, flares, and emergency contact channels including phones and radios.

If you are properly prepared, you can have a fun and stress-free experience while out on the water.

Final Thoughts:

Whether you are looking for a vessel that sleeps two people, a vessel that comes with two separate beds, or even a boat that can sleep more than two people, you will have plenty of options.

With innovative designs, smaller boats are able to offer more luxuries in their cabins than they were previously. This is because they use space more creatively and efficiently.

This wider variety of options means that there is a boat for every budget that will match your needs. Even if those needs are the ability to stay on your boat comfortably overnight.

Buying a used boat can be a great way to save money if you are looking for a vessel that is a little bigger or more equipped than a small cuddy cabin.

Make sure that you are properly equipped when you go out on your boat, especially for overnight stays.

The main thing to remember is to make sure both you and your passengers are comfortable. If you are not comfortable, your experience will likely be less enjoyable.

Overnight boating, or even camping on your vessel can be a great way to have fun with your loved ones and make some memories.

These luxury yachts are priced from $2.5 million and feature en-suite master bedrooms, bathing decks, and 'mini beach clubs' — take a look onboard

  • These Sunseeker yachts have a starting price of $2.5 million and can host up to eight people.
  • They feature sun decks, master suites with en-suite bathrooms, and mini beach clubs.
  • We boarded three of the yachts while they were docked at St. Katharine's Dock, London.

These Sunseeker yachts have space for "mini beach clubs" at their stern, and can sleep up to eight people in luxurious cabins. I took a look at the 65 Sport Yacht, the 74 Predator Yacht, and the 76 Yacht while they were docked in St. Katharine's Dock, London.

2 person yacht

The 65 Sport Yacht was the least expensive of the three showcased Sunseeker yachts, with a base price tag of £2 million ($2.5 million).

2 person yacht

It can travel up to 35 knots, according to Sunseeker's website. Cruising at high speeds on the yacht is like driving "a high-performance convertible supercar," it says.

2 person yacht

A Sunseeker employee told Insider that people who purchase the luxury sport yachts don't always sleep onboard, but use them as "day boats" instead.

2 person yacht

The yacht has a spacious open-plan living and dining area ...

2 person yacht

... as well as an upper deck, or flybridge, which boasts a driving seat, steering wheel, and control panel, situated just above a sunbathing platform.

2 person yacht

This seating area, next to the galley, faces the indoor helm where a steering wheel and control panel is located.

2 person yacht

According to the company's website, a tender can also be placed on the bathing platform, leaving the evacuated space free to be transformed into a "beach club," complete with a bar, fridge, and seating.

2 person yacht

Comprised of two screens and a spacious control panel, the helm section on the main deck feels very modern.

2 person yacht

The Sport Yacht has three cabins, including a "master stateroom." The cabin feels rather spacious and features a king-sized bed, a sitting area, wardrobe, and bathroom.

2 person yacht

The master cabin is also fitted with extra trimmings such as an additional lounge area ...

2 person yacht

... and an en-suite bathroom. The 65 Sport Yacht can accommodate up to seven people and one crew member.

2 person yacht

There are three cabins in total, with the option of a fourth one as an added option in the design process. This cabin could be for children as it features two single beds.

2 person yacht

The 74 Predator Yacht is only slightly larger than the Sport Yacht, measuring 22.8 meters compared with the Sport Yacht's 20.5 meters. It can also travel faster than the Sport Yacht, reaching speeds of up to 40 knots, according to Sunseeker.

2 person yacht

The yacht, worth nearly $3.5 million, also features open-plan living, as well as a mechanism that allows the cockpit door to be lowered into the base of the yacht, according to Sunseeker.

2 person yacht

The lower deck has a fully-equipped galley ...

2 person yacht

... which also boasts a wine cooler.

2 person yacht

The Predator Yacht also features a master cabin, complete with the option of either a walk-in wardrobe or office space, according to the company's website.

2 person yacht

The yacht has three cabins – although a fourth can be added – and three en-suite bathrooms, according to Sunseeker.

2 person yacht

The Predator model also had a cabin with two single beds for children or other guests.

2 person yacht

It is spacious enough to host up to eight guests and two crew members. Purchasing a Predator Yacht would set you back £3.2 million ($4 million).

2 person yacht

The last model we visited, the 76 Yacht, was even larger. The vessel stretches to 23.6 meters.

2 person yacht

It felt more like a floating home, with multiple seating zones and four cabins, each with an adjoining en-suite.

2 person yacht

The stern of the yacht also boasts a "mini beach club," according to Sunseeker, featuring a grill and bar stools.

2 person yacht

Buyers can also opt for a jet-ski with a crane, a spa tub, or added sun beds, according to the company website.

2 person yacht

The vessel has a price tag of £3.25 million ($4 million). Buyers can also pay an extra £376,000 ($471,000) for a package of extras, including LED lights for the side deck and refrigerated drawers under the sun beds.

2 person yacht

The master bedroom is spacious and even has a sofa situated underneath a long window overlooking the water.

2 person yacht

Unlike the Sport Yacht, buyers tend to purchase the larger vessels for staying onboard rather than as use for day boats, according to one Sunseeker employee.

2 person yacht

The employee added that sales of the luxury vessels remained steady during the pandemic, as people gravitated toward open space on the water and away from busy urban centers. "People saw boats as safe places," the worker said.

2 person yacht

The employee also added that the yachts primarily attracted buyers in their forties, but that the age was "coming down" as more people seek opportunities to spend time at sea.

The 15 Best Personal Submarines For Superyacht Owners

By Victor Baker

Updated on February 11, 2023

Best Personal Submarines

Back in the old days, submarines were solely used for utilitarian purposes, like for research or for the military. But after many years of sitting on the edge of yachting manufacturing, personal submarines are becoming an established mode of transport for personal leisure.

Of course, the prices are exuberant, so it’s still a toy for the rich and famous, but us mere mortals can dream of some luxury, can’t we?

There are four main brands that are into submarine making that have been working on refining their designs for a good part of the last couple of decades. A fifth one is in the process of building a submarine with an interior that resembles a luxury business jet that will hopefully break through the barriers of the industry.

NEMO Submarine

Do you recall the 1977 James Bond movie , where his car became an immersible submarine? Back then we all thought that was fantasy, and those fantasies only existed in the movies. Well, Aston Martin is working on making that dream a reality. They are hoping to come up with the first submersible car to explore the oceans underwater while maintaining a luxurious lifestyle the brand believes in.

The research vessels have been around for a while, and their place is well established in the yacht industry . But the ultimate superyacht toys are in a category all of their own. We will explore the world most of us still only dream of, while a few fortunate humans can call this their hobby.

Triton personal submarine

Superyacht owners are into a different set of toys they like to spend their time with, such as helicopters, jet skis , or jacuzzis. The new and improved submarines that are built now are meant to be handled by more yachts than in the past. Usually, the submarine is launched with a crane that can handle the weight to lift it and the superyacht needs to possess the capacity to deal with all that entails. The crew should be experienced as well if they want to avoid accidents.

If you’re in the market for a personal submarine, they start at about one million US dollars, but some exceed that price by a lot more, and can even go into dozens of millions. Some of the factors such as maximum depth, submerged time, and payload capacity can all have an effect on the final cost. If you get all the bells and whistles, you are looking at a different price range.

Let’s see which are the 15 best personal submarines in the world right now.

  • Seabreacher X

Seabreacher X

Among the most technologically advanced marine vessels ever built, the Seabreacher X is a two-seater sub equipped with a 300 high-powered engine. If you’re familiar with the Y model, then you can notice the similarities in size. It is more aggressive shape-wise and it provides better propulsion while underwater with the fully vectored thrust system.

With about five meters (or 16 feet) in length, its design resembles a shark, and it seems as if it really mimics the tail articulation of water mammals.

  • U-Boat Worx C-Explorer

U-Boat Worx C-Explorer 5

With a maximum depth of up to 1,000 feet, the three or five-seat C-Explorer can stay underwater for up to eight hours. Not the largest sub we looked at, its transparent acrylic hull provides its passengers with cool 360-degree views.

It has a climate-controlled cabin that keeps its occupants comfortable for the duration of the trip. Even if you encounter some rough waters, the machine will keep its stability due to the dual-pontoon hull design.

  • DeepFlight Necker Nymph

DeepFlight Necker Nymph

Built for Richard Branson and his paradise resort Necker Island, the Necker Nymph is 4.6 meters (15 feet) long, with a beam of 3 meters (just under ten feet). This open-cockpit winged submarine accommodates a party of three plus one crew member, and it reaches up to 150 feet underwater. It is considered more of an extension of scuba diving rather than a submarine though.

Offering a speed of up to 6 knots, it is a little fun machine for weekend getaways. The Virgin owner flies underwater thanks to its positive buoyancy system designer Graham Hawkes built especially for this model.

  • Triton 600/2

Triton 600 2

The smallest offering from Triton Subs , this little machine weighs in at just 2,500 kg (or just a little over 5,500 lbs), and standing at 1,47m (or just under five feet). The svelte new design has the same power as Triton’s flagship model. It seats two people, which makes this a nice size for owners that prefer to pilot their own vehicle.

You can dive up to 200 meters (about 650 feet), for a maximum of six hours. The sub reaches a top speed of four knots, which is not bad for a tiny submersible. It is also customizable, so you can make it your own.

  • DeepFlight Dragon

DeepFlight Dragon

Princess Yachts and Dragon collaborated for the design of this personal sub model, which fits in the garage of Princess 40M. It is made to fly underwater alongside large marine mammals. Its long shape makes navigating easier, and it flies beneath the surface to up to 330 feet using an electric motor. Some submarines use ballast to descend, but this is not the case for the DeepFlight Dragon.

The 16-foot submersible is one of the most streamlined models on the market. Due to its compact size, this two-person Dragon aspires to become standard equipment for superyachts.

  • U-Boat Worx Cruise Sub 7 1140

U-Boat Worx Cruise Sub 7 1140

This seven-person sub is the deepest diver on this list. The Cruise Sub 7 1140 from U-Boat Worx can descend underwater to 3,740 feet, and it can last up to 16 hours deep under the sea. It is an air-conditioned machine that comes with two acrylic spheres. The back-to-back seats allow for three passengers to face one way, and the other three in the opposite direction.

The seats are revolving, so everyone gets the same views. The eight thrusters of the flagship model are equipped with aids in the maneuverability department, and it also offers plenty of horsepower to navigate even in strong currents.

  • Triton 1650/3

Triton 1650 3

This three-person submersible is one of the lightest on the market. Also the most compact model, the Triton 1650/3 weighs in at 4,000 kg (or close to 9,000lbs), which makes it a bit heftier than others in this category. It can dive up to 500m (or 1640 feet) depths, but it does not take much room. It is compared to a pair of Jet Skis when stowed, that’s how well it does on storing space.

The passengers can benefit from 360 degree views that are possible because of the bulbous acrylic cabin. To resurface just use the single life point, and that’s it. Easy to use and fun all at once.

  • U-Boat Worx Nemo Submersible

U-Boat Worx Nemo Submersible

Specifically designed with superyachts in mind, the Nemo Submersible is the latest from submarine specialist U-Boat Works. The company offers a slick machine that can deep-dive up to 300 feet underwater, and it weighs in at roughly 5,500 lbs.

It is a pleasure launching and recovering it, as there is no need for a cradle. It also takes up as much room as two jet skis when you’re ready to store it. The design is also trendy and the colors are bright and visible.

  • EGO Compact Semi Submarine

EGO Compact Semi Submarine

This part boat part sub was invented by Korean company Raonhaje. Passengers can observe the marine life from an enclosed unit that submerges directly underwater, while it remains attached to the whole structure. The huge acrylic windows offer clear views of the underwater world from below deck.

Powered by an electric motor, it is an affordable and sustainable option. On top of that, it is a fairly silent model. What that means is that it does not scare away the marine life that surrounds it.

  • Nautilus VAS Submarine

Nautilus VAS Submarine

The US-based submersible maker Nautilus is the company behind this model, which took its inspiration from a military-style submarine construction. If you’re looking to purchase one of those submarines for your superyacht, you will enjoy hours underwater in pure comfort. Resembling a classic Bond vehicle, this luxury private submarine can hold up to five passengers.

Indoors, the machine is equipped with a toilet, stairs, a minibar, and it has enough headroom to be able to stand up freely. Using the large distortion-free optics, you can enjoy crystal clear views of marine life.

  • SEAmagine Ocean Pearl

SEAmagine Ocean Pearl

This two-person mini-submarine for luxury yachts goes for around $2.5 million. It has a maximum operating depth of 500 feet, and it can hold up for up to six hours. The clamshell design makes boarding easy with its large opening. It is also built to be able to handle multiple dives on the same day, without having to go back on deck.

Offering an excellent field of view to its occupants, it is also a safe and robust model. What’s cool about the Ocean pearl is the way it behaves underwater. It remains in the horizontal position at all times, and it doesn’t roll. In the event that the thrusters should stop, the submarine will rise back to the surface.

  • Aston Martin Triton Neptune

Aston Martin Triton Neptune

Teaming up with the brilliant people from Triton Submarines, Aston Martin wanted to design a brand new way to explore the underwater. Project Neptune is a fast, sleek, and extremely luxurious submersible that is changing the superyachting world. Think luxury car/yacht, with the same craftsmanship and detailing Astin Martin puts into creating its luxury cars.

Hand-stitched leather seats, a helm console are only a few of the numerous features the Neptune offers. It can remain submerged for up to eight hours, and go to depths of 1,640 feet.

  • SEAmagine Aurora 6

SEAmagine Aurora 6

Starting at $3.7 million, the Aurora 6 can carry five passengers and it reaches 3,300 feet. It contains six 10hp motors that offer extreme maneuverability. It can be compared to the same type of ease a multi-engine drone has. It seats a total of six people, including the pilot.

The guest lounge has room for three passengers that can enjoy the leather swivel chairs, while the others can sit at the back in their own seats. One of the larger sizes, it has its own toilet in the hull. The sub can go to 3,300 feet in-depth, and you can enjoy the marine life for up to eight hours.

  • Neyk Luxury L-1

Neyk Luxury L-1

The Neyk Luxury L-1 is easily one of the most ultra-modern submarine designs we’ve seen. Standing at 63-feet, this teardrop luxury sub can reach depths of 1,000 feet. Inside, the machine is spacious and can accommodate up to 12 guests. The height indoors goes up to six feet, so most people can stand comfortably.

Featuring a jet-style cockpit and all the bells and whistles they come with, the transparent nose cone provides you with a clear view of the ocean. The retractable undercarriage is built to drive up a ramp and use its own power. It is one of the most innovative designed submarines yet.

  • Phoenix 1000

Phoenix 1000

The single largest personal submarine ever made, it is also one of the most expensive ones . The size is impressive, at 65 meters (just under 215 feet), and a beam of about 8 meters (26 feet), it also has roughly 5,000 square feet of indoor area. It can fit a dozen people or so in its ten bedrooms, with its fully equipped kitchen, a jacuzzi, and a few viewing areas.

This underwater toy has capabilities of taking you to regions of the deep ocean other submersible machines cannot. It can make Transatlantic crossings at 16 knots of speed, all while keeping its passengers safe and comfortable. Luxury at its best, this will run you close to 2.3 billion US dollars.

These are the 15 best submarines for superyacht owners you can purchase this year. We hope you enjoyed this virtual tour into the gadgets the rich and famous invest their time and money into. Maybe one day we can also aspire to one of those submarines as our personal little toys.

Brand New Ranger Tugs 41 Flagship: Two-Stateroom, Two-Head Family Cruiser with IPS Performance

' src=

Ranger Tugs has just launched its new flagship, a 41-foot family cruiser with two staterooms, two heads, and Volvo Penta IPS performance. The R-41 also has enough amenities to furnish a New York apartment, including standard washer and dryer, three AC units and three refrigerators.

The 41 is Ranger’s largest boat yet – by a long shot. Until now, the Ranger Tugs line went from 23 to 31 feet. Ranger Tugs, along with Cutwater Boats, are made by Fluid Motion in Washington State, one of the most successful builders in the U.S. Ranger and Cutwater have well-earned reputations for building turn-key, user-friendly cruising boats; just bring your toothbrush and a change of clothes and you can start cruising. (I have cruised happily on Rangers and Cutwaters on both coasts of the U.S. and Canada and have found that they lived up to these expectations; they’re fun, easy-to-love boats.)

But Fluid Motion also gives owners a reason to use their boats. They hold owners’ rendezvous, cruises, factory visits and more. All this results in a loyal ownership base. In the Ranger Tugs case, this often meant that a first-time owner would buy a Ranger 25, then move up to a 29 or 31, and then…

Owners told Ranger that they wanted a larger boat than the 31, a cruiser with two cabins and two heads, so they could cruise longer and farther with more of their families or friends on board. The 41 was born.

The R-41 is Ranger’s first boat with Volvo’s IPS pod drives. It comes with twin 300-hp Volvo IPS400s, all controlled by three joysticks on board; one on the right armrest at the lower helm, a second in a cabinet tucked beneath the steps to the flybridge in the cockpit, and the third up in the flybridge itself. IPS, of course, offers fingertip maneuverability around a dock and the system is fuel-efficient, quiet and smoke-free.

When Volvo’s engineers tested the R-41, they said it topped out at 25 knots, with full fuel and water and four people on board. The efficiency was noticeable throughout the speed range. At 8.2 knots, the engines burned 4.7 gph; at 13.3 knots,16 gph; at 20 knots, 24 gph, and at 25 knots, 31 gph.

For cruising boat owners, a boat’s range is an important part of the equation. The R-41 carries 300 gallons of fuel. With a 10 percent reserve, the range at 8.2 knots is 471 nm; at 13.3 knots, 224 nm; at 20 knots, also 224 nm, and at a wide-open 25 knots, 209 nm.

You walk on the Ranger 41 through a side door on the starboard side, or through the open side of the transom via the wide swim platform (the transom settee rotates to open up access here). The cockpit is large, for maximum sociability, and it comes equipped for a picnic or a party, with a barbecue, icemaker and sink. It’s protected overhead by the overhang from the flybridge, which has LED lights.

A large glass door opens up to the salon, with the galley aft on the port side. A glass bulkhead opens to the cockpit, and the galley has a three-burner stove and oven, a double-basin sink, microwave, fridge and lots of cabinets and counter space.

Large front and side windows let in a lot of natural light, and there’s seating at the port-side dinette and around a table to starboard, plus a reclining leather chair; all told, Ranger says the salon can hold 12 people. You lift up the dinette table to get to the utility room with the full-size washer and dryer; the table also converts to an extra bed at night.

The helm is to starboard, with a sliding glass door leading to the side deck for easy line handling or docking. Two helm chairs are side by side, and they face an instrument panel ready for cruising, with a standard 22” Garmin chartplotter, sonar, AIS, radar and autopilot. A genset also is standard.

The aft cabin is on the starboard side, opposite the galley. You go down three steps and it has a bed that can be configured to a queen or a double twin. The aft cabin also has a seating area plus its own vanity,  head with shower.

The master cabin is forward, and it’s filled with natural light from two large overhead hatches, three windows on each side and four small front windows. The queen-sized bed has walkaround room and there’s a two person leather settee on the starboard side and a cedar-lined hanging locker. A lighted desk/vanity is in a nook, and the master head, with a shower, is heated, a particularly nice touch in the Pacific Northwest.

You climb up to the flybridge using steps, with a handrail, from the starboard side of the cockpit. It has a full helm station, wraparound seating for eight, a fridge, electric grill and sink and a stereo. The mast can be lowered so that the air draft is only 12’ 9”, a very attractive feature for cruising the Great Loop, say, or the ICW in Florida with all its bridges.

Specs.: LOA: 41’2”; Beam: 14’0”; Draft: 3’6”; Fuel: 300 gals.; Water: 120 gals.; Power: 2×300-hp Volvo Penta IPS400 diesels with pod drives. Price: $799,937. (A salon version is $749,937.)

This is a Bass Hunter BHEC-2 - Recently purchased at an auction. It is in very good shape. For more information about why these boats are so cool see thisYoutube video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZxIcyOtOOc It is about 7' 8" long and just under 4' wide. Its made to fit perfectly in the back of a standard pickup bed. It is filled with two types foam for excellent stability. It rides very high in the water so it can go places most bass fishers cannot. It has two seats which are removable. It has plates on the front and the back for a trolling motor and a small outboard motor (its rated for 3hp outboard) There are two small cracks on the top of the boat (shown in the picture) but doesn't seem to affect anything. The rest of the hull is in good condition. When I bought this at an auction they included a vintage Minn Kota trolling motor, which they said worked fine except for a broken propeller. I have not tested it and cannot verify if it works. I do know that the specifc model

Hello!Thank you for taking a look at my ad for the fishing boat I grew up in. I feel confident in saying that the boat does not look like a 1999. I have taken care of the boat over the years a long with keeping the accessories inside the house. I will give a detailed list of the accessories following, I just wanted to provide a quick history of the boat. My father and I fished comfortably for hours on the weekends while I was growing up. It created a lot of memories! There just simply isn't enough time in the day any more for him and I to get out on the water. Instead of the boat sitting, I wanted to pass it on to someone looking for a small fishing boat. I would highly recommend this boat for someone who is looking for an almost fish ready setup and looking for something small for 1-2 people!Boat: Sun Dolphin Pro 120 - 12 foot boat, two carpeted decks, Two cushioned seats & pedestals, 5 storage compartments, Fuel storage area and battery storage area, Electric Aerated Livewell, full internal electric for lights, and trolling motor. Trailer: Galvanized Steel boat trailer, only have taken one trip up north with it. Tires have so much life in them, also have a spare wheel+tire.Trolling Motor: Minn Kota Endura, Telescoping twist tiller + foot pedal we installedGas Motor: Johnson 1969 9.5 Horsepower Engine Shallow Drive (Shaft Drive) **It is hard to start, I cannot express this enough. You can get it running to get you across the lake or to the fishing hole but doesn't go fast. Please take note of this** Fish Finder: Strata 128 - Black and White screen - Installed and works greatBattery: Quality battery & purchased in 2012. Kept in the house and works great! Extras: Fish net, two side mount rod holders, ore, two lifejackets + two throws, anchor and two tie ropes.Thank you again for taking the time out to look. I would highly recommend this boat for someone who is looking for an almost fish ready setup and looking for something small for 1-2 people!Scott

Model Challenger 1800 Bowrider. READY NOW FOR THE 4TH !!

Length 18.0

This 1 owner jetboat has been garage kept since new. The vinyl seating is in very good condition and is still soft and supple. If you have never driven one you owe it to yourself to do so. They are a blast to drive! Never worry about hitting submerged objects or the bottom. Never worry about your kids near the prop. This is the supercharged version with 215 hp. Has the updated washer kit already installed. This boat needs nothing and is ready for fun today. Key Features: 21-gallon fuel capacity 12-inch draft Built-in cooler 185-hp Supercharged Rotax standard Sharp, eye catching graphics Seats eight Boat World review: New for Sea-Doo in 2005, the Challenger 180 is an economy-minded 18-footer designed as a versatile family sportboat. With room for eight people, plenty of storage, two engine options, and an optional wakeboard tower, Sea-Doo expects the Challenger 180 to compete with outboard and stern drive family boats. What Sea-Doo offers that the competitors can't is the added benefits of a jet boat's extremely shallow draft, uniquely responsive maneuvering, and inherent safety over propeller-driven boats. Benefits of Jet Power In essence, jet power pumps water out the stern to push the boat through the water, rather than pulling a boat through the water by a propeller. Water is drawn from beneath the boat and forced through a pump inside the engine compartment, and then ejected out the back of the boat through a 6-inch diameter nozzle to propel the boat. The nozzle turns for steering, and a "reversing bucket" folds down over the nozzle to direct water straight down for neutral, and toward the bow for reverse. This offers several advantages over conventional propulsion. First is shallow draft. With rare exceptions, a propeller must be located under the bottom of a boat so it can bite into undisturbed water. Since a jet drive sucks water from below the boat and shoots it out the back, the Challenger 180 can go into water almost as shallow as the hull, about twelve inches. And with no outdrive to raise, beaching the boat is simple. One disadvantage to jets, the pump can get clogged with seaweed or debris, which is most likely to occur in very shallow water with a lot of loose seaweed on the bottom. Sea-Doo's ICS system (Inlet Clearance System) cleans debris from the intake grid, but large amounts could still foul the pump. Improved Maneuverability Another advantage to Sea-Doo's jet power is uncanny maneuverability. Because the jet system is always pumping water whenever the engine is running but redirecting the water for neutral or reverse, jet boats of the past were notoriously squirrelly in neutral and reverse. After testing two different Sea-Doo sportboats, I'm pleased to say the company has taken what was once considered a negative and turned it into a huge positive, particularly for beginner boaters. With the engine running and the shift in neutral, the Challenger 180 sits nearly stationary, drifting with the wind like a propeller driven boat would. But even though it is not "in gear", the boat still steers by simply turning the wheel, hovering in one spot but still in control. To maneuver, just turn the wheel until the bow is pointed in the desired direction, shift into forward, and steer normally. While a twin engine boat with a bow thruster comes close, I have yet to run a conventional-powered recreational boat that has this ability. A third advantage to jet power, is not having a propeller outside the boat, creating much less chance of injuring a skier or swimmer, although it is always prudent to turn the engine off when a swimmer is alongside. Since a jet boat is always pumping water while running, I find it makes people turn the engine off instinctively -- something often ignored on conventionally powered boats. Power and Performance To power the jet, Sea-Doo offers two Rotax engine choices, a 3-cylinder 185 horsepower four-stroke engine, and a similar engine with a supercharger and intercooler that develops 215 horsepower. Our test boat, equipped with the larger engine, topped out at 46 mph, and cruised quite economically at 28.7 mph, burning just 9.1 gph or 3.15 mpg. The boat planned off in 3.8 seconds and went from 0 to 30 in 7 seconds, with plenty of pulling power for water toys. Plenty of Features The layout of the boat should appeal to family boaters. Sea-Doo calls it a 20-foot cockpit in an 18-foot boat, and I must admit, it does have a lot of room for an 18-footer. There is plenty of seating, a large sun pad with the bow filler cushion installed, and adequate storage. The swim deck is nice too, with a telescoping boarding ladder and well placed handrails to make it easy to climb aboard. The new Challenger 180 has some great features, plus the added safety and maneuverability of Sea-Doo's jet system, making it a great choice for an all-around family boat. Sea-Doo Challenger 180 (2006-) Test Result Highlights Top speed for the Sea-Doo Challenger 180 (2006-) is 46.0 mph (74 kph), burning 18.3 gallons per hour (gph) or 69.27 liters per hour (lph). Best cruise for the Sea-Doo Challenger 180 (2006-) is 28.7 mph (46.2 kph), and the boat gets 3.15 miles per gallon (mpg) or 1.34 kilometers per liter (kpl), giving the boat a cruising range of 60 miles (96.56 kilometers). Tested power is 1 x 215-hp Supercharged Rotax®.
