Portugal shares its northern and eastern frontiers of the Iberian Peninsula with Spain, while having over 1,000 kilometers of coastline in the west and south. With a long coastline, Portugal produced great sailors like Vasco de Gama, Pedro Álvares Cabral, and Afonso de Albuquerque. These men helped construct a spirit of sailing and adventure in Portugal that still holds true today. It is very easy to experience this sense of spirit and passion while on your own yacht charter in Portugal.

Whether you charter a sailboat, catamaran, motorboat, or houseboat in Portugal, you will have easy access to the Atlantic Ocean as well as other countries.  Portugal provides the perfect location for a sailor searching for a boating holiday. After you experienced enough of the southern Portuguese culture, navigate around the southern tip of Sagres, and head north to Belém, just west of Portugal’s capital Lisbon.  Visiting the Belém Tower, a 16th century fortified lighthouse that was built to defend the port, is a must while chartering a yacht in this area of central Portugal. Famous Portuguese sailors, like Vasco de Gama, sailed by this same light house before embarking on their daring sea-expeditions.

Continue your yachting vacation to Lisbon and stop in Alfama, the oldest district of Lisbon. Unlike most of the city, this district survived the earthquake of 1775 and still offers astonishing views from several observation points. Be sure to have a map of this district because it is very easy to get lost walking the cobbled streets while observing the Lisbon Cathedral, the Museum of Decorative Arts, historic architecture and the local bars.

Many people think the Caribbean has the best diving in the Atlantic Ocean, but Portugal provides diving that is just as spectacular. The long Atlantic coastline provides excellent diving in Faro, Lagos, Sines, and Aveiro, where extraordinary marine life inhabit reefs and caves. Diving in Portugal’s warm waters is possible year round with water visibility typically ranging from 3-15 meters but can be as far as 30 meters. Portugal offers exciting and unique experiences that cannot be replicated by any country on Earth.

Climate and Sailing Conditions for Portugal

Portugal’s location in Western Europe gives the country a warm, temperate, Mediterranean climate with a wet season in the winter. During the winter months, the average daytime high temperature is 61°F (16°C) and in the spring months, temperatures gradually rise and reach around 72°F (22°C).  In southern Portugal, the summer months last from May to October and the weather is warm with very little rain. Relax on your catamaran, motor yacht, sailboat or houseboat in 85°F (29°C) temperatures in July and August, while a refreshing breeze softly blows. The sun shines for 12 hours per day, allowing plenty of time for outdoor activities like swimming and diving. Because of the shifting current, the best time to swim and dive in Portuguese waters is in July or August when the average water temperature is 70°F (21°C)

The pristine sailing conditions of the west coast are attracting an increasing number of international sailors. Over 300 days out of the year, the Nortada (Portuguese Trade Winds) blow at between 12 and 18 knots which makes Portugal an ideal boating destination.  Refreshing breezes, 12 hours of sunshine, comfortable temperatures and warm water, July and August are definitely the best months to charter a yacht in Portugal. Chartering a catamaran, sailboat, houseboat or motor yacht, it is recommended you sail from south to north because of the trade winds and the southern current that flows during the summer.

Boating Licenses for Portugal

In order to rent a yacht in Portugal, you must abide to certain sailing and boating regulations.  Licenses are issued by the Portuguese Maritime Institute but any sailing licenses issued by another European Union country are automatically valid. Non-EU licenses are accepted and recognized in Portugal if the requisites meet EU standards. They usually have to be translated into Portuguese or English. It is very important to have an ICC (International Certificate of Competence) because it is recognized by most EU sailing authorities and is proof of competency in areas of sailing and boating.

Your journey can start from any ports in Algarve, although we highly recommend the award winning Vilamoura Marina, considered one of the best marinas in the World. With a quick and easy access to the boats, it really makes the start of your journey special. 

Our fleet is located on the West part of the Marina, where we would normally meet 15 minutes before the departure time. Our crew will already be aboard ready to go, as we make sure everything is ready and that all your special requests are as you were expecting. 

It takes around 10 minutes to leave the Marina, it's a breathtaking moment of the adventure, and once you start cruising along the Algarve´s coastline it is just stunning. Depending on the wind and sea conditions the crew will take you to some of the most beautiful places, that only have access by sea. Visiting the Caves and Grottos, seeing the beautiful properties of Hollywood actors that have chosen this magical place to live, along with some secluded beaches that have no foot access.

In the morning, cruise the Algarve Coastline westbound to the beautiful caves, depending on the boat you chose and the sea conditions we make a stop in a calm place next to deserted beaches, and with use the Jetrib to discover the caves and grottos. Enjoy the moment while listening to your favourite music as we have bluetooth and Wi-fi on board, so you can have a good time to relax onboard, or have a dive in the sea using our snorkelling equipment. All our boats have plenty of space and couches for sunbathing or in the shade just to read a book. For lunch we recommend the best restaurants beach front with private water taxi. Lunch aboard is possible and requires some preparations and for that we need to know at the time of booking, so we have time to arrange the food you requested and maybe even a private chef to serve you.

What is the best time to visit Portugal?

Portugal has a Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Therefore, the summer months (June to September) are generally the best time to charter a yacht in Portugal, as the weather is warm and sunny and the sea is calm. However, the summer can also be very busy, with high tourist numbers and crowded marinas. The shoulder seasons (April to May and October to November) can also be good times to visit, as the weather is still pleasant and there are fewer crowds.

Should I charter a private yacht with or without a skipper?

Portugal has founded its glory and wealth on the epic feats of expert navigators who set out from its shores to discover new lands. Along the hundreds of kilometers of its coastline are scattered ports of all kinds, including both busy commercial ports and marinas for tourist use.

Relive the charm of the epic maritime exploits of yesteryear by arriving at and departing from one of Portugal’s marinas . No adventures into the unknown, everything will take place in the utmost safety: the main marinas in Portugal are modern and well equipped. And if you do not have a boat in many locations you can rent one.

Having a boat (yours or rented) will allow you to discover hidden coves, enter sea caves, admire the shapes and colors of the cliffs along the coast, sunbathe lying on lonely beaches not accessible by land. In short, experience Portugal from a different and fascinating perspective, the most beautiful for those of you who love the sea, the sound of the waves, the coolness of the sea breeze.

Start planning your itinerary at sea by taking a look at which are the best marinas in Portugal . We have divided them by area (north and center, Lisbon and surroundings, south, islands), so you can find the right marina for you faster.

Marinas in northern and central Portugal

The best landing point in northern Portugal is the Marina of Viana do Castelo , near the mouth of the Lima River and only a 10-minute walk from the city center.

It is the first Portuguese marina one encounters when sailing south from Spain and is an excellent base to anchor the boat and explore the fascinating Minho region or sunbathe on a Costa Verde beach.

Going further south, you will encounter other well-equipped marinas around the Farol de Barra, the highest lighthouse in Portugal and an important reference point for all sailors.

You can dock in Carregal (near Ovar), in Torreira or in Figueira da Foz . The latter is a lively seaside resort with a huge beach and an old-fashioned atmosphere, with good connections to the cities of Coimbra, Porto or Lisbon and a lively nightlife. It is an ideal destination suitable for different types of travelers, with proposals for all ages.

The Marina of Figueira da Foz is located at the mouth of the Mondego River; the city center can be reached on foot in a few minutes.

Marinas in Lisbon district

The Lisbon district and the surrounding areas offer many safe harbors. If you want to experience the thrill of arriving by boat in one of Europe’s most beautiful capitals, you can dock at the Parque das Nações Marina on the north bank of the Tagus River, in a modern area of the city redeveloped after the 1998 EXPO.

Oriente Station is just a 10-minute walk from the marina and offers excellent connections to the historic center, but you won’t need to travel far to find all the stores and services you’ll need, as well as some of Lisbon’s most famous tourist attractions.

If you prefer to dock in a seaside resort, the best choices north of Lisbon are the Marina of Cascais along the Estoril coast and the marina of Oeiras , located about halfway between Lisbon and Cascais.

To the south of Lisbon, however, we recommend the marina of Sesimbra , two kilometers from the city center. It is an ideal base for those who, after many hours of sailing, want to stretch their legs with fascinating excursions in the green Arrábida Natural Park; those who prefer to continue exploring by sea will be able to go in search of small coves and deserted beaches.

The marina of Sines is a convenient stop for those who then want to continue towards the Algarve.

Marinas in southern Portugal

Southern Portugal, and in particular the Algarve region, is another area rich in safe marinas and marinas with many services.

One of these is Vilamoura Marina , the oldest in Portugal, located in the central Algarve about 27 kilometers from Faro. Vilamoura is a very developed tourist resort founded in the seventies by a rich banker from Lisbon: in the surroundings of the marina there are many hotels, luxury villas, vacation homes, bars, restaurants, stores.

Other marinas of similar quality that you can find sailing along the Algarve coast from west to east are Vila Real de Santo António, Tavira, Olhão, Faro, Albufeira, Portimão and Lagos.

Those who want to go far beyond the coast of Portugal and reach the charming Portuguese islands in the Atlantic will not have any difficulty in finding a port where to dock, whether in the elegant island of Madeira or in the remote Azores islands.

We are in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, so a good experience in navigation is required: but if you have the necessary skills, reaching the islands that were a port of call for the intrepid navigators of the Age of Discovery will be an unforgettable emotion.

The most exciting point of arrival is perhaps the Marina of Horta in the Azores (island of Faial), a colorful marina that has been embellished over time by paintings and drawings drawn by sailors arriving and departing.

Due to its location, it is a sort of obligatory stop for those crossing the Atlantic and this has made it become a sort of symbol for those who want to undertake challenging nautical enterprises.

In order to explore the beauty of this remote archipelago, you can stop at the marinas of Angra and Praia da Vitória on Terceira Island and at Ponta Delgada and Vila Franca do Campo on São Miguel Island.

In the Madeira archipelago, the best landing point is the lively port of Funchal , which welcomes boats of all sizes from all over the world.

Once you confirm your reservation, your broker will process your payment.

• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is confirmed more than 7 days in advance, a deposit of either $1,000 USD or 50% of the total cost of the reservation (whichever is greater) is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 7 days away, the remainder of the amount due is processed.
• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is made 7 days or less in advance, the total price of your reservation is processed immediately.
• If you are booking for a multi-day charter and your reservation is confirmed more than 30 days in advance, a deposit of 50% of the cost of the yacht is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 30 days away, the other 50% is collected for the price of the yacht, plus the APA, plus the taxes due.

Terms of refunds are dictated by the Charter Agreement. Generally, once a payment is collected, it is non-refundable. In certain circumstances, as dictated by the Charter Agreement, credits can be provided so you will be able to enjoy your yacht charter at a future date that is convenient for you.
