The Romans began colonizing it in the 2nd century BC, followed by Julius Caesar's conquest in 58BC. French culture has been widely admired since the 13th century. Although the glory days of empire may be fading, the country's fantastic yacht charters remain the envy of many.

Fun Facts about France
Many people know of the beauty, architecture, and fine arts of France. The country is well known for fine wine and high fashion, rich culture and complicated history, but with so much to learn it’s hard to know everything you need before your yacht charter vacation. These are just a few details that may give you an even greater appreciation for this beautiful nation
Over 75 million people speak French worldwide
French is a romance language, derived closely from classical Latin. It is also one of the most popular languages worldwide. It is the second most taught foreign language, after English, and the only other language to be taught in every country across the globe. The French language is beautiful to hear, and while many French natives also speak English, it doesn’t hurt to know a few words and phrases before travelling.
France is the most visited country in the world
Over 75 million tourists travel these lands annually, and it’s no surprise. France is home to magnificent cathedrals, museums, restaurants, and landscape. Even if you don’t make it to Paris, you are guaranteed to have a great time during your yacht charter to France. While you may be one of millions, choosing a boat rental for your vacation will certainly be more unique, and provide you a more “local” experience of the French countryside.
France is comparable to Texas in land size, yet has twice the population of California
It is a surprise to many travelers how small European countries can be. France only has 3,427 km (2,129 miles) of coastline, yet it is home to more than 65 million people. Not only is France a very popular country for people to move, its small cottages and shorter commutes between areas and cities allow for a much denser population.
Neither French toast nor French fries are authentic French foods
France is given credit for having some of the finest cuisine in Europe. It is famous for desserts and pastries, and unique savory foods. However the beloved French toast recipe is not a classic staple in France; neither are French fries. However, this isn’t much of a disappointment. You will have the opportunity to have unique and delectable foods no matter where you stop on your yacht charter to France.
All champagne is produced in France
France is known for fine wine, and produces several signature wines that can only be found in their region of France, and champagne is one of them. One small area in northern France produces all the world’s champagne. Any similar wine is not considered champagne, but simply sparkling wine. All champagne is made from either Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, and is fermented in a closed environment to trap CO2 to make it sparkling.
What to Know Before Planning a Yacht Charter to France
As with any new country visited, it is best to learn a little about the French culture and lifestyle before travelling. Because France has such a large pool of tourists, most locals will be patient and willing to help you learn. These are some of the social norms you may want to be aware of before planning your sailing vacation in France:
Be gracious
It is common courtesy to always greet people when walking into a store, and to compliment or greet people warmly when first meeting them. Many shops are also homes for the owners; when you shop you are likely being invited into a very intimate setting and point of pride for the shop owner. Be kind, say hello and goodbye, and always act especially friendly when interacting with French locals.
Learn to speak as much French as you can before your trip
France is the most visited country in the world, which means locals must interact with many visitors who do not speak their language at all. It can get tedious for them, and any French person will greatly appreciate if you attempt to honor their culture and speak their language first. Even learning a few key phrases such as “Parlez-vous anglais,” (Do you speak English?) will help you tremendously.
Keep your personal items close by
France is a very safe country; however, petty theft and pickpocketing happen more than in other countries because it has so many tourists year round. When you venture off the sailboat and into the streets, pack lightly and always keep your wits about you. The more densely populated the city, the more careful you should be.
Don’t rush things
During your yacht charter in France, you may be surprised at how casual an attitude is carried by most of the locals. Foreign sailors are used to a fast pace; however, in France it is expected and encouraged that you take your time. In restaurants, enjoy the meal without asking for the check. And don’t be too demanding to sales or service people. Many French stores also take significant time off, so don’t be surprised if some shops and restaurants are closed the entire time you’re vacationing. Most local shops are closed for at least a month during the year, as the French value quality of life as much as career achievement. Be patient as well as kind, and you’ll fare well in France.
Sailing Catamarans in France
France is a perfect place to start a Mediterranean yacht charter. 12 Knots offers a variety of catamaran, luxury yacht and bareboat rentals in six different areas of France. You can find 12 Knots Yachting Club in the Riviera, Saint-Tropez, Grimaud Toulon, and Hyeres. We recommend Mediterranean yacht charters in the late summer when winds are calmer. From April to October, temperatures hover around 65°F (18°C) to 75°F (23°C). However, the sun is bright for only eight hours a day during this season. In the fall and winter you can expect heavier rainfall and winds, yet longer days on the open ocean.
Choose 12 Knots Yachting Club for your Mediterranean sailing vacation. With so many places to see and things to do, you won’t want to miss anything during your trip to France. 12 Knots offers a variety of unique itineraries, reliable sailing yachts, and crewed sailing trips for beginner and experienced sailors alike. Choose a bareboat charter if you want to test your skills, or sign up for one of our sailing classes if you are still gaining your sea legs. We guarantee you’ll have a once-in-a-lifetime experience on the water.

Why Rent a Yacht in France
One might naturally inquire: why, indeed, should one contemplate engaging in the seemingly extravagant pursuit of yacht rental in France? The allure of such an undertaking can perhaps be unraveled if we consider the enchanting, spell-binding maritime landscapes that make the French coastline such a fascinating spectacle to behold.
There is a sense of sheer, untouched beauty that engulfs the coastline. The sun, setting over the shimmering Mediterranean, paints a canvas of blazing oranges and reds against the azure of the sea. It's an aesthetic marvel that captures the raw essence of our planet's celestial ballet.
To the west, the rhythmic lull of the Atlantic Ocean serves as a symphony to the senses. The Brittany coastline, characterized by its rugged cliffs and quaint fishing villages, exudes an earthy charm that whispers tales of centuries past. The waters here dance to a different tune, revealing a different side of the marine character with each changing tide.
To charter a yacht is to become privy to these mesmerizing symphonies of nature. It offers an opportunity to steer away from the well-trodden path and embark on a journey of intimate discovery. It is about immersing oneself in the elements, basking in the radiant glow of the sun, tasting the salt of the sea on your lips, and feeling the breath of the wind on your face.
Destinations to Visit with a Yacht in France
Embracing the freedom of the open sea, your yacht can serve as a gateway to the hidden treasures that dot the French coastline. Here are a few gems that deserve a place on your maritime itinerary:
🚢 The French Riviera (Côte d'Azur)
Renowned for its glitz and glamour, the Côte d'Azur presents an enthralling mix of opulent seaside resorts, azure bays, and charming old towns. Sailing into the Bay of Cannes , you're greeted by a backdrop of swaying palms and grandiose hotels. Further east, the principality of Monaco exudes an aura of unmatched luxury. However, the true charm of the Riviera lies in its hidden corners. The Lerins Islands, off the coast of Cannes, provide a serene retreat from the bustling mainland. The azure waters of the Calanques National Park near Marseille offer an idyllic spot for snorkelling and swimming.
Known as the 'Island of Beauty', Corsica captivates sailors with its dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters. The west coast, with its rugged terrain and secluded bays, is a veritable paradise for explorers. To the east, the town of Bonifacio, perched on a limestone cliff, paints a picturesque picture. The Scandola Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a haven for a rich array of marine life and a must-visit for any nature enthusiast.
The northern coast of Brittany, lashed by the fierce Atlantic waves, presents a stark contrast to the tranquil Mediterranean. Here, the rugged cliffs give way to secluded coves and quaint fishing villages. Sail into the Bay of Biscay and anchor at the historic port of Saint-Malo, a town steeped in maritime tradition. Further west, the Pink Granite Coast, with its bizarre rock formations and lush vegetation, is a sight to behold.
The Normandy coastline offers a compelling blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. The iconic cliffs of Etretat, with their dramatic arches and needles, are a spectacle to behold from the sea. Further west, the D-Day beaches stand as solemn reminders of the region's wartime past. A trip to the charming harbour town of Honfleur, with its narrow houses and cobbled streets, offers a delightful insight into the region's rich artistic heritage.
Replete with azure waters and iconic pebble beaches, Nice is a divine yacht destination. Indulge in local gastronomy, revel in Belle-Époque architecture, and surrender to the intoxicating charm of the French Riviera.
🚢 Saint Tropez
Synonymous with luxury, Saint Tropez flaunts glamorous sandy beaches and a bustling nightlife. Dock your yacht in its world-class marina, enjoy its elite boutiques, and maybe rub shoulders with celebrities.
🚢 Saint Nicolas des Eaux
Nestled in the heart of Brittany, Saint Nicolas des Eaux offers tranquil mooring spots along the Blavet River. Expect picturesque landscapes, quaint stone houses, and unspoiled natural beauty that complements the serenity of yachting.
🚢 The Bay of Biscay
A wild expanse of the Atlantic Ocean that stretches from the Brittany coastline to the northern coast of Spain. In the Bay of Biscay, the spirited waters and rich marine life offer an exhilarating experience. The coastal town of La Rochelle provides a captivating blend of historical allure and modern luxury, with its medieval towers standing sentinel over a modern marina.
🚢 The Gulf of Lion
Located in the western Mediterranean, the Gulf of Lion is known for its wide sandy beaches and lagoons teeming with wildlife. The charming seaside town of Sète, often referred to as the 'Venice of Languedoc', is particularly enchanting. With its network of canals, fishing ports and a vibrant cultural scene, it offers a unique blend of maritime charm and artistic allure.
🚢 The Island of Porquerolles
Part of the Hyères archipelago, Porquerolles is a veritable Mediterranean paradise. With its white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters and lush vegetation, it's the perfect spot for swimming, snorkelling, or simply basking in the beauty of nature. The island is also crisscrossed with trails, ideal for exploring its interior and experiencing its rich biodiversity.
🚢 The Cap d'Agde
Famed for its 14 kilometres of sandy beaches and its bustling marina, Cap d'Agde offers a range of experiences, from tranquil relaxation to water sports and recreational activities. Its nearby Mount Saint-Loup offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean, making it a worthwhile detour.
Each of these destinations, in their unique way, narrate a tale that further embellishes the grand narrative of the French coastline, making your maritime sojourn all the more enchanting.
Things to Consider before Renting a Yacht in France
The anticipation of such an experience can indeed be tantalizing. However, before one embarks on this maritime sojourn, there are a few elements one must thoughtfully ponder upon.
The first consideration is naturally the season. The French waters can be a delight during the balmy months of May to September. The summer sun gifts the sea with a warm, inviting glow. The azure Mediterranean is a resplendent sight to behold. The Atlantic, during these months, also sheds its customary wintry fierceness, morphing into a placid, welcoming entity.
Another important factor is the size and type of the yacht. This is dictated by the number of travelers, their sailing proficiency, and their quest for luxury or adventure. Yachts come in myriad shapes and sizes, from nimble vessels perfect for a solo sail to grand structures designed to accommodate large groups, complete with onboard luxuries to cater to every whim and fancy.
Furthermore, understanding the intricacies of sailing is crucial. Many yachts are available with a seasoned crew, ready to guide you through your journey. For the more adventurous, there are options to self-sail. Regardless of your choice, an understanding of basic maritime rules, safety measures, and navigational principles is non-negotiable.
The Best Yacht for French Waters
Determining the optimal vessel for your journey is akin to piecing together a complex jigsaw puzzle. The right yacht serves as the bridge between you and the marine world, offering a unique blend of comfort, performance, and safety.
In the context of French waters, the Swan 54 comes across as an impressive contender. Hailing from the reputable Nordic stable of Nautor's Swan, this cruiser is a marvel of design and performance.
Characterized by its stunning, sleek contours and spacious interiors, the Swan 54 seems to embody the essence of elegance. Its sturdy, fibreglass hull is sculpted to slice through the waves with an almost effortless grace. The retractable bow-thruster ensures remarkable manoeuvrability, allowing it to navigate with aplomb through the often challenging Atlantic currents or the crowded Mediterranean ports.
The interiors bear the hallmark of Scandinavian design – minimalist yet functional. The saloon area, with its panoramic windows, provides a stunning 360-degree view of the maritime panorama. The yacht is furnished with state-of-the-art navigational tools and safety equipment, ensuring a secure and comfortable journey.
The Swan 54's blend of luxury, performance, and safety make it a versatile choice for traversing the French waters. Whether it's the enchanting blue of the Mediterranean or the enigmatic, ever-changing Atlantic, the yacht serves as a perfect companion, ensuring an unforgettable voyage through some of nature's most captivating canvases.
Indeed, to charter a yacht in France is to embark on an intimate dialogue with the sea. It’s a journey that transcends the physical, evoking a sense of awe, wonder and a profound respect for the magnificence of our natural world.
Frequently Asked Questions
As we navigate through this nautical narrative, there are bound to be queries and concerns that bubble up like gentle sea foam. It is only natural, for curiosity is the compass that guides us on our quest for knowledge. So, let us embark on a voyage through the sea of Frequently Asked Questions, addressing the enigmatic unknowns that lurk beneath the surface of our yachting journey in France.
What is the best time of year to charter a yacht in France?
The ideal time for a yachting journey in France largely depends on your desired destination. The Mediterranean coast, with its balmy weather and calm waters, is particularly inviting from May to October. The Atlantic coastline, on the other hand, is best visited between June and September, when the sea conditions are generally more favourable.
Do I need a license to charter a yacht in France?
This depends on the type of yacht and the charter arrangement. For bareboat charters, where you sail the yacht yourself, a recognised International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or an equivalent national certificate is usually required. If the charter includes a professional crew, then no sailing license is needed.
Can I sail to other countries from France?
Absolutely! The Mediterranean sea is your oyster. From the French Riviera, you can easily sail to the nearby coasts of Italy, Monaco, and Spain. Just ensure that your travel plans are in line with the visa regulations and maritime laws of the countries you plan to visit.
What kind of wildlife can I expect to see?
France's marine environments are richly diverse. Dolphins are a common sight in both the Mediterranean and Atlantic. The Corsican waters are home to the rare Mediterranean monk seal. Bird enthusiasts can spot a variety of species, including the Audouin's gull and the European shag. While sailing, remember to respect the natural habitats of these creatures, maintaining a safe distance to ensure minimal disturbance.
In this endeavour to understand and prepare for a yacht voyage in France, we hope these responses shed some light on the path. Remember, each question is a stepping stone towards unravelling the mysteries of our grand adventure.

Many people choose to have a Captained or fully crewed charter yacht to sail aboard - effectively letting go of all responsibilities to focus on rest and relaxation. Whether on a superyacht or a smaller affair you are on a mini-cruise ship and can just enjoy being in the moment wherever you go. There are stretches of coastline with a few hours of travel required between ports but you can find plenty of opportunities to wander around markets, drink the local alcohol and enjoy the world-renowned food that might come from a Michelin-starred restaurant or a small bistro. There is so much to explore and enjoy in France that many never tire of it.
Best Areas To Charter A Yacht In France
There are three broad areas in which to charter a yacht in France - Southern France, Corsica; and Biscay and the Channel.
Southern France
A French Riviera yacht charter has to be on the bucket list of everyone who enjoys luxury yacht charter regularly. Whether Cannes, Nice, or the principality of Monaco on the Cote d'Azur you will be beguiled by the great sailing conditions and the fun to be had ashore on the sandy beaches, the Mediterranean Coast, and in the bars, restaurants, and casinos ashore. This is one of those Departments of France that is both French and uniquely its own in culture. Not far off the south of France are Les Iles d'Or, small paradise islands just offshore near Cap d'Antibes. The slightly larger island Porquerolles is close too - a worthy pause on an island and coastal hopping boat rental in France.
The Mediterranean island of Corsica is also very much of its own kind in terms of culture. Mountainous, rocky Corsica is the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte who led the country in wars around Europe in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries. Pop across the sea to Italian Sardinia too! Being in EU waters you will only need your passport to land there.
The Bay of Biscay and the Channel
The Bay of Biscay and the coastline of La Manche (Brits call it the Channel) shouldn't be ignored either thanks to their challenging sailing conditions and very different vibe to that of southern France. Don't forget the wines of the Loire or the exquisite Norman calvados apple brandy!
Best Towns To Charter A Yacht In France
At the ultra-luxury yacht charter end of the scale, you can get a superyacht from Cannes or Monaco on the Mediterranean Coast. These come with full crews and often tenders and toys that will keep you entertained away from the stress of life ashore. Eat, drink and party to your heart's content and only see those you want around you.
Out of Cannes, you will find a range of yacht rentals available from 50 meter plus mammoths to modest 40ft plus sailing yachts that will still be comfortable for you and your group.
Marseilles, Nice, and Toulon are among many other yacht rental centers on the Mediterranean coastline.
In Corsica you have Calvi and Maccinagio.
Northern France
Biscay France has Les Sables d'Olonne, Brest, Bordeaux and la Rochelle amongst others. On the coast of La Manche you have Cherbourg, Le Havre and Caen as well as Calais, Dieppe and of course the nearby Channel Islands that are far closer to France than their owner, the UK!
Types Of Yachts To Rent In France
There are a wide variety of yachts to charter in France according to your wants, budget, and needs. Let's have a look at a few types and discuss them.
Motor Yacht
Ranging from fully crewed luxury 70-meter superyacht giants to smaller yachts a family of four can handle on their own, a motor cruiser could be your choice. You're not limited by the wind, though you will pay for the fuel to get you everywhere. At speed, they can be thrilling and you can sit inside should the weather change and still, get where you're going!
Motor catamaran
Often better appointed with luxuries than their monohull equivalents of the same size, motor catamarans have shallower drafts and more space for entertaining aboard. Thanks to their draft you can explore shallower waterways too.
Sailing catamaran
Unless you go for a fully crewed larger vessel, sailing catamarans are the height of luxury you and your group of sailing types can enjoy. Many will have en-suite showers and heads in every stateroom and of course plenty of entertaining space in the saloon.
Thanks to often having two engines these are far maneuverable in port, but having shallow drafts and greater leeway these charter yachts are more suited to the constant winds of the Mediterranean than the changeable conditions of Biscay and the Channel.
Monohull sailing yacht
The workhorse of yachting charters these are good in most sailing conditions from beating into a Biscay gale to blasting downwind on the Mistral. You can pay for something extremely comfortable and spacious but a family of four on a smaller budget can enjoy a week or two for a fee that competes with an all-inclusive holiday in the Balearics.
Canal/Riverboats
Built to get under bridges, though a lot more spacious and comfortable than British narrowboats, these crafts are great for exploring France's extensive inland waterway network. The Loire and Seine are two rivers that are navigable for hundreds of miles inland and allow you to see parts of France that you never could either by car or on a yacht.
Captained or Bareboat Yacht Charter in France
What do you want from a dream yacht charter in France? Just to relax and have every need catered to? Or to go on a self-supported holiday where you are in charge of your own adventure?
Captained yacht charter
For an extra fee on top of that for the yacht charter itself, you can have a Captain sailing the boat for you. You need no sailing experience or qualifications and the Captain will know the best places to take you. You just focus on having fun and relaxing in luxury.
If you want to learn seamanship and sailing while you're at it you can participate as much or as little in getting from A to B as you want.
You will have to pay for the Captain, their food, and a tip at the end of the boat rental period.
Bareboat charter
If you just want to cut loose and have the sailing qualifications to do it then a bareboat yacht charter may be your best bet. You will decide where to go and what to do. You will navigate, sail and run the vessel.
You also get privacy with your friends and loved ones - and don't have to pay for the Captain or their meals!
Crewed barge rental
Lie back and chill out with everything is taken care of from food to getting about France's inland waterways. This is a fantastic way to tune the modern world out and relax while everything is taken care of, watching the world go by as someone else sets about giving you time without responsibility!
Self-driving boat rental
Unlike chartering a yacht on the sea, you don't need any boating qualifications to set sail with your friends and or family on a trip like this. All you need is an idea of where you're going! Inland waterway self-drive boat rental is one of the best ways to explore France and its extensive network of canals and rivers.
Do you need a license to rent a Yacht in France?
For a bareboat charter, you need the appropriate sailing qualifications required to take charge of a vessel.
This can be the International Certificate of Competence (ICC)
All yacht charter companies recognize RYA qualifications from the Day Captain and up.
Many yacht charter companies also recognize national qualifications from outside Europe such as the ASA 104 Bareboat certificate.
If you have a CEVNI qualification then it will be very easy to do a self-drive inland waterway boat rental and you will be able to explore more of the waterways involved. However, you will be shown the rules of navigating French waterways and issued with a Carte de Plaisance if not.
If you are on a Captained charter however you don't need any license.
Best Times To Rent A Yacht In France
The summer school holiday season is the most popular time of year to rent a yacht in France but isn't always the best. Come July and August it can be fiercely hot on the French Riviera but there again you could always sail in more northern climes at that time of year.
It is quieter outside of school holidays and a lot cheaper too. Try May or September in Corsica or Mediterranean France where the weather is cooler and the crowds aren't so intense.
Sailing Weather In France
Mediterranean France is often placid and warm in the summer months - expect temperatures in the 30s and nice sea breezes at times. The Atlantic and Channel coasts are very pleasant most of the time too. Expect cooler temperatures (the high 20s and low 30s) and a steady northerly or easterly in cyclonic conditions that tend to mark the summer months in this region.
It isn't all gin-clear days and calms though! The NW Mistral wind that blasts down the Rhone Valley can build to quite dangerous levels throughout the summer, with the strong and steady wind blowing along the French Rivieraremorselessly for days on end. That said in summer you can expect a calmer and gentler wind most of the time. As ever when sailing, keep an eye on the weather for the next 24 hours every day.
Atlantic westerlies thrash through the Channel and barrel through the Bay of Biscay throughout the year - this does mean you need to keep an eye on the weather. In mid-summer, it can be almost flat calm and so gentle as to be frustrating depending on the location of the Azores High.
How much does it cost to rent Yachts in France?
What's your budget? A charter fee of €2000 for a group of up to six adults sailing on a bareboat arrangement will get you a comfortable 12-meter sailing yacht for a week. Expect to pay €2000 a day for a luxury sailing catamaran in peak season. You can pay €20,000 a day and up for no-holds-barred luxury!
Remember you will have to pay either a non-refundable damage insurance premium or leave a refundable security deposit from your credit card with the yacht charter broker before you cast off.
You will also need a budget for food, fuel, and nights out. You don't always have to moor in a marina (€20 a night and up) but can drop the hook and anchor in a secluded anchorage. In some places, you may pay a fee to moor on a buoy though these are more secure than anchoring in unfamiliar waters.
Explore France By Renting A Yacht
France in all its glory and eccentricities is a country that families never tire of, visiting time and again to taste, feel, hear, see and smell this wonderful country in all its ways. Whether the beautiful beaches of the south of France or the mountainous coastline of Corsica, the challenging sailing of Biscay or the Raz du Seine, or the playful luxury of Monaco you will get everything you could possibly want from a French yacht charter.
Take time to explore the markets and perhaps challenge yourself with the local cuisine - the French eat every bit of most animals except their squeaks! The wines and beverages are different in every region and often have Appellation Controlee status, be it Calvados in Normandy or Champagne in the Champagne region. The country is justifiably proud of its rich and varied culture and in exploring it you will find delights at every turn.
So what are you waiting for? Find a yacht to rent on Borrow A Boat today!
Yacht rental in France is legal as long as the provider meets all the regulations and legal framework put in place by the French and EU governments.
You can rent almost any kid of yacht from a giant superyacht to a small speedboat. It largely depends on your budget and needs for your time on the water.
Your budget is the first thing. You should consider where and when you wish to rent a yacht in France. You should consider your skills and qualifications and whether you want a skipper to help you on your journey.
The most popular time is the school summer holidays. If you don't have children, May and September may be better as it is quieter and cheaper on French waters.
You will have to pay up to 50% upfront on booking the yacht rental. Upon arrival, you will also pay either a security deposit on your credit card or can buy insurance to cover that.
If you are in immediate danger at sea then call MAYDAY on VHF Channel 16. If you can get to safety under your own steam or the breakdown occurs while in port you should phone the yacht charter company for advice.
Who's coming with you? Kids or older adults will influence your decision. Where do you want to go? What's your budget? Have you the appropriate sailing qualifications? Will you need a professional skipper?
If you are from an EU country, Switzerland, Iceland or Norway then you will not. If you are from the US, Australia, New Zealand or Canada or parts of Africa then you will be OK as long as you stay no more than 90 days. All other nationalities should check with the French Consul or Embassy in your country.
We are confident that our prices are the most competitive and transparent in the market.
We won't charge any booking fees when you make a booking with us.
We have the highest number of verified and vetted boats available on the market.

Tips for Yacht Charter on the Côte d’Azur
To make your rental easy and your boat trip successful, pay attention to these tips:
- Ensure that the boat you rent suits your needs, considering the purpose of your vacation. For instance, ensure there is enough room for you to be secure and comfortable if you want to soak up the sun.
- Ensure that you understand and are comfortable with the terms and conditions set by the individual or company you are renting from by thoroughly reading them.
- It’s advisable to familiarize yourself with the yacht’s itinerary and nearby attractions beforehand. You may add variety to your daily life on a yacht in this way, and you might even find your calling as a guide.
- A yacht vacation is fantastic, but as with any vacation, you need to be ready for everything. It’s best to talk to the crew ahead of time about any organizational concerns and potential complications. Seasickness is the primary issue, to which no one is immune, and it can develop suddenly and subtly. Ensure you have the appropriate anti-motion sickness medication in your first aid kit to prevent being caught off guard.
- Delicious cuisine is an indispensable part of a trip. Take advantage of this unique chance and plan ahead for breakfasts and lunches on your yacht. They are sure to be memorable. To learn more about the boat’s amenities, such as kitchen appliances, space, and other facilities already on board, feel free to get in touch with us for detailed information.
- Regardless of the yacht’s size, avoid overpacking; bring only what is essential for your trip. Depending on the season, consider wearing loose-fitting clothing like a T-shirt, swimsuit, or fleece is it’s cold. Wearing closed-toe shoes while traveling on board can help reduce the chance of stubbly toes and slipping.
Finally, make sure to reserve the boat charter on the French Riviera for a sufficient duration to complete all your planned activities.

Guide to the South of France
The home of the world’s most romantic and charming yacht charter destinations
Made up of iconic destinations and exceptional cruising grounds, there can be no better way of experiencing the south of France from the comfort of a superyacht. Indeed, from the glamorous coastal town of St Tropez to the various hotspots found elsewhere along the French Riviera, the south of France is simply brimming with possibilities for a luxury yacht vacation .
Neighboured by the superyacht capital of Monaco and populated with some of the world’s best towns and beaches, the South of France is unquestionably one of the finest parts of the Mediterranean to charter a yacht in. Encompassing the French Riviera , an exclusive region otherwise known as the Côte d'Azur, guests are able to visit a number of world-renowned attractions which are each located within close proximity to one another. Whilst destinations such as Montpellier and regions like Midi-Pyrenees are situated in the South of France, these are not common cruising grounds for private superyacht charters.
When accessing the fantastic collection of cruising destinations, charter guests typically fly into Nice before getting a transfer to embark their chosen superyacht at one of the popular and well-equipped ports. Antibes, for example, is the home port for some of the world’s largest superyachts and serves as a convenient starting point for an itinerary taking place in the South of France.
The more popular destinations found around the South of France include the chic town of St Tropez , the Bay of Angels close to Nice, and the unblemished beaches which fringe the ancient streets of Cannes . The proximity of Corsica to the coastline which fringes the South of France means that it’s possible to visit the picturesque island during an itinerary in this part of the Mediterranean.
When charter guests have explored the more popular parts of the region, there’s a quieter side of the South of France which offers a restorative tranquility. Porquerolles, for example, is known locally as the retreat of the French Riviera , and the authentic coast of Villefranche offers stretches of white sand beaches for guests to unwind on.
As one of the most coveted summertime vacation spots, there are a great many superyachts which visit this part of France each year. To discover which destination and yacht best meets the needs of you and your family, feel free to get in touch with your preferred charter broker after browsing all crewed yachts for charter in the South of France .

Nice Yacht Charters
Nice is a popular yacht charter destination in the French Riviera. Despite the fact that today, Nice is the second most popular destination in France – next to Paris, of course – it wasn’t until the late 18th-century that its beauty started attracting A-list appeal.
Boasting an ideal Mediterranean climate all year round, Nice first gained traction as a winter destination for English aristocrats; and once its beauty was confirmed, later became a muse for Western artists most talented painters: like Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, Arman, and Niki de Saint Phalle, to name a few.
The meeting point of old-world opulence, sunny shores, art enthusiasts, delicious fare, and seaside views, Nice is a haven for the romantics. To experience the true heart of the French Riviera, watch the sunset as you walk along the Promenade des Anglais, see the art hanging on the walls of Fondation Maeght or grab a drink at one of the coastal city’s celebrity-filled nightclubs. When the sun is shining – which, in Nice, it always is – wander through Cours Saleya, one of the globe’s most popular flower and food markets, for fresh produce brought in by the local harvest.
It’s worth a visit; after all, Nice is considered the “foodie capital” of the world. Nice is the perfect place to visit on your France yacht charter to expand your palate with quaint bistros and boulangeries to elegant brasseries and fromageries.
Nice Yacht Charter Highlights
- Classic Mediterranean boardwalk; Promenade des Anglais
- Quaint Vieille Ville (Old Town) & Nice Cathedral
- Cours Saleya Market
- Amazing French cuisine, bakeries, and wine bars
- Hidden beaches of Cap Ferrat

When to charter a yacht in Nice
Like most of the Mediterranean, summer is charter season in Nice. The season begins in May, and runs through early October. Summer yacht charters in Nice offer plenty for guests to explore and experience. The Nice Jazz Festival in July is a summer season staple, with nightly concerts to Nice’s historic Plaza Massena.
With summer temperatures in the 70s and 80s, many choose to soak up the sun at the Nice’s sandy beaches. Castel Plage, situated on a stunning private beach, is one of Nice’s most exclusive beach clubs, and a favorite stop for Nice yacht charters. Other must-sees during the summer include: Football matches at OGC Nice, the coastal trail on Cap-Ferrat, and Nice’s bustling flower and produce market.
Nice France Yacht Charters – Things to Do & See
Promenade des Anglais
Named “La Prom” for short, the Promenade des Anglais, or ‘English Walk,’ runs along the pebbly shore of the Nicean coastline; making it the focal point of the city, and a metaphorical compass for the rest of Nice’s frequented attractions. Lined with palms and boasting enchanting sunset views, “La Prom” is the perfect spot for a relaxing bicycle ride, a slow skate or a romantic evening stroll. Along its path are a couple of other sites worth seeing: the majestic 1912-built Hôtel Negresco and the art deco Palais de la Méditerranée, which exists as a part of an impressive, four-star palace.
Colline du Château
French for “Castle Hill,” Colline du Château is a historic hill that holds the remains of Nice’s first Ancient Greek settlement; which, considering its existence thousands of years ago, was considered to be the area’s first true Medieval town. While most of the castle has since crumbled, today, the site houses a large park and botanical garden, waterfalls, the remains of a former 11th-century Cathedral, walkways made of vibrant, 20th-century mosaics, and sweeping panoramic views of Nice and the Baie des Anges below.
Cours Saleya
Situated in the heart of Vieille Ville, or “Old Town” – in a city that is already considered to be one of the world’s most desired culinary destinations – Cours Saleya is a famous fruit, flower and vegetable market, highly regarded for its colorful produce, seductive aromas, and on select days, precious antiques. Open Tuesday through Sunday, Cours Saleya welcomes travelers and locals alike to peruse its bountiful stalls; and when they’re done, traipse through its surrounding shops and enjoy dinner at one of the nearby, likely award-winning restaurants.
Charter a private yacht in Nice
If you want to explore the French Riviera, Nice is a prime launching point. With Cannes, Monaco and St Tropez nearby, a private yacht charter in Nice offers a full range of possibilities for itineraries. Not to mention, Nice is renowned for its exclusive marinas, from the Port de Nice right in the heart of Old Town, to Port de Saint Jean Cap Ferrat.
When you charter a private yacht in Nice, you’ll be in the heart of the French Riviera. Taste the city’s many famous dishes, (like the classic Salade Nicoise, or street-food favorite Socca). Explore the stunning Cap Ferrat, with its beautiful anchorages, or cruise to nearby ports in St Tropez.

Yacht Charters in France
Enjoy france’s beauty from the sea and many rivers.
Fishing, swimming, hiking, and self-reflection, all along the beautiful French lakes
The many lakes in France are well suited for boat trips and water activities of all sorts. They are also incredibly popular destinations for fishers and swimmers, both from local towns and foreign countries. France has claim to about 580 square kilometers of Lake Geneva, which has been the site for the Bol d’Or sailing regatta since 1939 but is also widely used by private skippers. The region of Jura is also rife with lakes, including the small Lac des Brenets, also known as Lac de Chaillexon. This lake is very popular for vacationers and bathers in the summer, and can be used for ice skating in the winter. The close by Lac de Bonlieu is even more pristine, and Lac de Narlay in Franche-Comté is known for its very clean water. Lac des Rousses, northwest of Lyon, is a favorite among bathers. The same is true for Lac de Saint-Point/Lac de Malbuisson in Département Doubs and the dam-made Lac de Vouglans near Lons-le-Saunier. Lac de Chalain also plays an important role in the region, especially as an area for hiking, and Lacs de Clairvaux serves as a bathing lake in the summer. In very southern France, the reliable wind speeds of the Lagune des Étang de Leucate near Salses-le-Château create great conditions for this well known surfing area , and the Lagune de Étang de Thau, near a city of the same name, has very pretty, but also demanding for boaters, waters. For swimmers and bathers, Lac de Hourtin and de Carcans in the Département Gironde are equally popular, and Lac du Causse in Département Corrèze in the Région Limousin is a central location for water sports and activities. Lac d’Aiguebelette in Département Haute-Savoie in Rhône-Alpes has already been used as the venue for the World Rowing Championships, and will be again in 2015. For fishing, Lac Pavin in Département Puy-de-Dôme is a good place for fishers to congregate, as it is a home to the popular Arctic charr fish. Lac de Lacanau near Bordeaux lies just inland of the Atlantic coast, and the dam-made Lac de Naussac in Languedoc-Roussillon is used both to generate electricity and as a place for recreation. Further inland, Lac de Villefort is east of Mende, and a popular weekend excursion site near Paris includes the man-made lake Étangs de Hollande in Département Yvellines. Some wonderful lakes that are more difficult to get to, and which are only accessible by foot, are Lac de Melo and Lac de Capitello on the island Corsica , off France’s southern coast in the Mediterranean. An itinerary for Corsica can be found here.
A place where you can run into movie stars, royalty, celebrities, athletes, and wild horses
In accordance with the characteristics of the local language, natural beauty is present in all its forms, including in the previously mentioned stretches of coastline along France’s borders with the sea. The most famous of France’s coastal areas since the 18th century, Côte d’Azur , or the French Riviera, sits on the Mediterranean and is home to the famous cities and vacation towns Cassis, Menton, Toulon, Hyères , Saint-Tropez, Antibes , Cannes, Nice, and Monaco (a suggested itinerary along the Côte d’Azur is available here. As on the western Côte Bleue (Blue Coast), Le Rove, Ensuès-la-Redonne, Carry-le-Rouet, Sausset-les-Pins, and Martigues all are famous for their wild white horses that roam around the land. Camargue between Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône and La Gran Motte, also has these horses, and along with Côte d’Améthyste near Port-Camargue, Palavas-les-Flots, Le Cap d’Agde, Gruissan, Port Leucate, Port Barcarès et Saint Cyprien, also has many marinas, berths, and docking areas tucked into hidden coves. On the Atlantic coast, follow from south to the north the Basque Coast (Côte Basque) to Hendaye, Biarritz, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Ciboure and Angelet and then the almost 100 kilometer long Silver Coast (Côte d’Argent) from Angelet to Soulac-sur-Mer, whose name is almost like precious metal shimmering in the sunlight. France’s most famous nude beach is Montalivet-les-Bains, and the towns in the Lège-Cap-Ferret region on the Arcachon Bay have lovely anchoring and docking places in the small harbor.
Coasts of beauty, flowers, precious stones, silver, and pink granite
The Coast of Beauty (Côte de Beauté) earns its name from La Palmyre to Meschers-sur-Gironde, the Light Coast (Côte de Lumière) boasts Beauvoir-sur-Mer to L’Aiguillon-sur-Mer, the Jade Coast (Côte de Jade) has Saint-Brevin-les-Pins and Moutiers-end-Retz, and the Megalith Coast (Côte des Mégalithes) sits on the Gulf of Morbihan. The Breton sections of the Côte de Cornouailles coastline from Pointe du Raz to Pont Aven, the Côte d’Íroise between the Sein and Quessant islands near Brest, and the Coast of Legends (Côte des Légendes) around Saint-Pabu are all beaches with similar attributes: shores with large rocks and deep fjords . The Golden Belt (Ceinture dorée) of France lies in two municipal Départements, Côtes-d’Armor and Finistère Léon. The area is named for its many hours of sunshine and lovely mild climate, even in the winter . The Pink Granite Coast (Côte de Granit Rose) offers little sand, but instead, huge boulders litter its beaches and the area experiences strong tides . The Emerald Coast (Côte d’Émeraude) is located between Cap Fréhel and Cancale. Lower Normandy is the home of the Flower Coast (Côte Fleurie) and is known for its seaside resorts Honfleur, Trouville-sur-Mer, Deauville, Villers-sur-Mer, Cabourg, Varaville, and Merville-Franceville-Plage. In upper Normandy you’ll find the 120 kilometer long and sometimes very steep Alabaster Coast (Côte d’Albâtre), on which Le Havre, Fécamp, Dieppe, Le Tréport, Étretat, and Yport can be found. In Nord-Pas-de-Calais, the Opal Coast (Côte d’Opale) has long, narrow sand beaches, salt flats, and the well known bathing areas Stella Plage, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Le Touquet-Paris-Plage, Berck, and Saint-Vallery-sur-Somme.

What Choose
Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in South of France
At Yachting.Rent, we’re experts in providing unforgettable sailing experiences in the South of France, and a big part of that is helping our clients choose the right vessel for their trip. When it comes to deciding between a sailing boat and a catamaran, there’s a lot to consider, as each offers its own unique sailing experience and benefits.
A sailing boat, also known as a monohull, is a traditional choice that appeals to the purists of sailing. Sailing boats provide a more dynamic sailing experience, with the boat’s tilt offering an exciting feel of the wind and waves. These vessels are ideal for exploring narrower waterways, mooring in tight spaces, or for those who simply enjoy the thrill of sailing close to the water and love the sensation of the boat heeling under the wind.
On the other hand, catamarans, with their two hulls, are all about stability and space. They are less likely to rock in choppy conditions, making them a great choice for those prone to seasickness or families with young children. Catamarans also offer more deck space and larger living areas, perfect for group get-togethers, sunbathing, or simply enjoying the view. Their shallow draft allows them to anchor closer to the shore, letting you explore secluded beaches and hidden coves that are out of reach for deeper-hulled vessels.
In terms of speed, a well-sailed monohull can certainly keep pace with a catamaran in certain conditions, particularly upwind. However, catamarans tend to have the edge in terms of speed on a downwind course due to their wider beam and lighter weight.
