10 things to do on a yacht charter during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival

Dalmatia Region

This is one of the most popular regions for yacht charters in Croatia. Located on the southern coast, its made up of 233 miles of coastline, islands, and reefs, and includes the must-see historic towns of Split and Dubrovnik , as well as hundreds of stunning verdant islands and national parks.

Croatia's second-largest city – its "crown jewel',  Split  has a history dating back to the 4th century. It is also home to the beautiful Roman  Diocletian's Palace , a top recommended destination for your tour.

Split also boasts some of Croatia's largest marinas, and is within shooting distance of the celebrated islands of Korčula , Hvar , Vis, and Brač . Visit the world-famous Zlatni Rat beach on Brač's southern side, or sample the vibrant nightlife and clubbing scene on Hvar, which also plays host to several regattas over the summer season. Further south is  Dubrovnik,  a UNESCO World Heritage site of huge architectural prominence.

Istria Region

Located in the north of Croatia, this region has a distinctly Italian feel to it, and has plenty of fantastic places to visit. Pula, the region's capital, is crammed with museums, which isn't surprising given its history that dates back to 3,000BC.

Across the water, lies the Brijuni National Park , a group of 14 small picturesque islands easily accesible from the mainland. Slightly to the north, the beautiful old fishing port of Rovinj is also well-worth a visit, with its steep cobbled streets and charming piazzas.

Travel south to historic Zadar , where you can enjoy a quiet walk along marbled streets and pine-scented beaches. Further south you will find the Kornati archipelago , a group of 100 or so relatively barren islands and reefs which are perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

Croatia’s stunning coastline and idyllic verdant islands have made it one of the most popular regions for Mediterranean yacht charters . To truly experience the magic of this country, here are our tips on the places you must check out when you charter a yacht in Croatia.

Don't Miss:

  • Game of Thrones tour - through parts of Old Town, Dubrovnik where some of the most memorable scenes were filmed.
  • Dubrovnik Summer Festival  - see dramas, plays, classical music concerts and much more.
  • 360˚ Dubrovnik - Michelin-starred restaurant built into the walls of the old town, with exquisite views over the harbour.
  • Diocletian’s Palace  - UNESCO site within the walls of Split’s historic and thriving town.
  • Franciscan Monastery - Visit Hvar’s 15th-century monastery and museum that overlooks a shady cove, and meander charming gardens that feature a 300-year old cypress tree.
  • Plitvice Lakes National Park - one of the oldest and largest national parks in Croatia.
  • Zlatni Rat (Golden Horn) - located on the southern coast of Brač, regularly listed as one of the top beaches in Europe.
  • Blue Grotto, Bisevo - situated in the central Dalmatian archipelago, this waterlogged sea cave has an intriguing glowing blue light that appears at certain times of the day.
  • Pula Arena - one of the world’s six largest Roman amphitheatres, and certainly it’s most well-preserved.
  • Visovac Monastery - situated on a tiny island in the Krka National Park.
  • Mljet National Park tour - takes guests to the area of the first protected ecosystem in the Adriatic.

Avid island-hoppers seeking solitude love a Croatia yacht charter itinerary. Of approximately 1,185 islands just 66 are inhabited, making the unfettered beauty of its isles, inlets and bays ripe for exploration. Among these wonderful islands to explore are the verdant gems of  Hvar , Vis, Korčula , and Brač.

But yacht rentals in Croatia are also ideal for guests seeking impressive designer shopping, exquisite wineries and glittering nightlife in its main cities.

yacht getaways croatia

Culminating from Illyrian, Roman, Venetian, Christian, and Austrian empires all competing for Croatia’s ownership, Croatia is home to an astoundingly rich cultural heritage. This makes for a fabulous yacht charter: from the Venetian palaces and designer boutiques of the jet-set haven of Hvar; to the Benedictine beauty of the UNESCO-listed walled city of Dubrovnik; to the Italian infused architecture and cosmopolitan ambiance of Pula and beyond.

As one of the most popular destinations for yacht charters in the East Mediterranean , there should be plenty to choose from when it comes to luxury yachts for charter in Croatia. If you’re unsure about whether you want to book a motor yacht or a sailing yacht for your Croatian getaway, there are a few things you should consider first.

Motor Yacht Charters in Croatia

Whether you are interested in a small or large motor yacht, or somewhere in between, you should find a Croatia luxury charter that will more than meet your expectations. With a luxury motor yacht you can truly relax; soaking up the stunning scenery, or scuba diving reefs and wrecks under clear aqua waters, or taking a tender ashore to explore ancient Roman palaces and monasteries, as well as sampling the local cuisine and wines.

You should note that berth/slip options in Croatia for larger yachts (over 50m) are limited, however, with plenty of safe and tranquil anchorage spots to choose from amongst the numerous islands, islets, and reefs around this Adriatic hotspot you will be spoilt for choice.

Sailing Yacht Charters in Croatia

The Adriatic enjoys an average of 315 cloudless days a year, and with winds in Croatia generally around 10-20 knots, this can make chartering a sailing yacht a great option to explore the picturesque islands and secluded beaches at your leisure. The winds do tend to get stronger in the fall, so bear this in mind when booking your charter.

There should be ample sailing yachts, gulets (traditional wooden yachts), and catamarans for charter in Croatia, but we do recommend booking early to secure your perfect yacht and desired itinerary.

Gulet Charters in Croatia

Gulets are traditional wooden boats originating from Turkey , but are now widely available throughout Croatia and Greece . These types of boats offer a fantastic and cost-effective alternative to a luxury charter yacht, for those wishing to spend a bit less but still enjoy a fabulous yacht charter in the Mediterranean .

With so many options available, there’s something to suit every type of budget in Croatia. The average prices for motor yacht and sailing yacht charters in Croatia are as follows;

  • For motor yacht rentals in Croatia, prices can range from $32,000 to $1,8m per week plus expenses
  • For luxury sailing yacht rentals in Croatia, prices can go from $32,363 to $582,882 weekly plus expenses

Child playing in the sea during a yacht charter in Croatia

The optimal times for yacht charters in Croatia’s sapphire-hued waters span from May till October. During this time, you can benefit from calmer seas, reliably clement weather, and warm swimming temperatures. Croatia’s peak season is July and August, so expect both higher charter fees and packed marinas in these months.

There are a variety of options, although most yachts charters tend to begin in Dubrovnik or Split in the Dalmatia region, both of which have major international transport links. Another popular option is to set off from Italy or Montenegro and then cruise the Adriatic down towards the Kornati a rchipelago or along the Dalmatia region – encompassing 233 miles of coastline stretching from Krk to Lastovo .

Croatia has numerous must-see destinations and you will be hard-pushed to fit them all in. For itineraries along the southern Dalmatian coast, some yachts may spend a day in port in Dubrovnik – ‘the pearl of the Adriatic’ – before setting off for the picturesque surrounding archipelagos, which include the popular island destinations of Hvar , Mljet, Vis, and Brač . You can either finish your yacht charter back in Dubrovnik or continue on to finish up in Split – the cultural and economic center of Dalmatia.

For yacht charters in the north of Croatia, many like to begin in Venice or Bari, located in Italy’s Puglia (or Apulia) region, before crossing the Adriatic to Croatia's Istria region. From here you can explore the popular island of Pula , with its world-class Roman amphitheater, before cruising down towards Zadar and the Kornati National Park .

Alternatively, you can begin in Porto Montenegro – only an hour’s drive from Dubrovnik – although you may have to cover the cost of repositioning as many luxury charter yachts in Croatia are based in Split.

It’s simple enough to begin your superyacht vacation in a neighboring country before heading to Croatia. For more advice please speak to your yacht charter broker .

sample itineraries

We recommend finishing your luxury charter in Split, Croatia's second-largest city and one of the most popular superyacht hotspots on the Adriatic. Renowned for its pristine beaches and crystalline waters, plus with a vibrant mix of things to see and do, you'll be in for a treat.

Glittering blue marina in Croatia

There are hundreds of harbors, marinas, and ports in Croatia, so whether stopping off in Dubrovnik or sailing to the far side of the Lastovo Archipelago National Park there are sure to be facilities or an anchorage to suit your needs.

There are 56 official marinas along the Croatian coast from Umag to Dubrovnik. Some of out top picks include;

  • ACI Marina Dubrovnik – located within a short distance to Dubrovnik’s historic old town. It has 380 slips and can accommodate yachts up to 60m/196ft. For larger yachts, or yachts not requiring a slip, another popular option is to utilize the international cruise ship terminal quay, which is happy to facilitate yacht charter pick-ups and drop-offs.
  • ACI Marina Korčula – ideal for a stop off at one of the many island destinations on your yacht charter, we recommend this sheltered marine, which accommodates yachts up to a maximum LOA of 40m/131ft.
  • Lumbarda Marina – also on Korčula this marina has slips catering to yachts up to a max length of 25m/82ft.
  • ACI Marina Vrboska – located in the celebrated islnad of Hvar, this marina offers berths for yachts up to a max length of 30m/98ft.
  • Cavtat Marina – If you're struggling to find a slip in the summer, we recommend this marina, which is located to the south of Dubrovnik and enjoys good shelter from all winds. It offers 119 slips for yachts up to a max LOA of 60m/197ft.

Some of the best ports in Croatia are also located in the Istria region in northern Croatia. We recommend;

  • D-Marin Dalmacija – located a few kilometers south of the ancient city of Zadar, which is the largest marina in Croatia with 1,200 berths and can accommodate yachts up to 80m LOA.
  • ACI Marina Rovinj – catering for yachts with a LOA of up to 25m/82ft
  • Marina Funtana – max length 20m/65ft.

For larger berths in the Split-Dalmatia region:

  • ACI Marina Split –  located in the heart of Croatia's "jewel" this marina has recently been modernised, offering great shopping, dining, fuelling and repair services to name but a few, alongside 318 protected berths that can accommodate superyachts up to 90m LOA.
  • Marina Kastela – just 7km up the coast from Split – which can accommodate superyachts of up 150m/492ft in length, with a draft of 8m.
  • D-Marin Mandalina – located in the city of Šibenik, situated between two National Parks within a protected lagoon, this marina boasts 429 slips, and has also been specially developed to accommodate yachts of up to 140m/459ft LOA.

Dubrovnik's glittering blue waters and old port

With its rich cultural and architectural history, along with lush national parks and secluded beaches, Croatia is fast becoming one of our most popular destinations. Therefore, we advise you to book your yacht charter well in advance of your trip to secure your perfect yacht on your preferred dates.

If you leave it too late, the selection of yachts at your disposal will be reduced and you may not be able to explore the destinations you have your heart set on. Plus, finding dates when everyone in your charter party is available can be tricky; the longer you leave it, the more challenging it will be.

Your yacht charter broker will also need plenty of time to tailor an itinerary to suit you, and enough time to book ahead for the nights you wish to spend in marinas. We recommend booking up to 3 months in advance to give your broker the optimum time to organise everything down to the last detail.

Croatia Yacht Charter Q&A

Some important things to consider before booking your yacht;

  • Yachts tend to spend more time at anchor in Croatia, so you need to consider that when choosing your perfect yacht. Ideally, find a yacht that is comfortable with ample leisure and entertainment facilities onboard.
  • Avoid heading into Dubrovnik when the big cruise ships are in town, these vessels can hold some 3,000 passengers and the town can become uncomfortably crowded.
  • You should also be aware that certain zones in Croatia's waters forbid fishing or diving, or require special permissions to do so. This is something you can discuss with your yacht broker, or yacht captain when deciding on your itinerary.

There should be a wide selection of yachts to choose from, so there is sure to be something that suits both you and your budget.

Croatian Gulets, traditional wooden yachts with wide beams that offer spacious deck areas and generous accommodation, are a fantastic and cost-effective alternative to a luxury charter yacht. Gulets are available to charter for around €13,500-€15,000 per week, which usually includes food and up to 4 hours cruising per day.

Gulets are also perfect for family charters, or those who simply enjoy spending their time out on deck soaking up the beautiful surroundings of this stunning region.

Why not visit our yacht charter fleet page for a comprehensive look at all yachts available for charter around Croatia.

Alternatively, you can reach out to your preferred yacht broker , who will be sure to help you find your perfect yacht and itinerary around the dates that suit both you and your guests.

The perfect time for yacht charters in Croatia is between May to October, with average temperatures in the mid to high 20s, calm sapphire seas and endless days of glorious sunshine.

You should note that Croatia's peak season is in July and August, so expect both higher charter fees and crowded marinas during these months.

Most charters tend to begin in the beautiful historic towns of Dubrovnik or Split before continuing on to the celebrated islands of Hvar, Mljet, Vis and Brač. Alternatively, you can begin in Montenegro in the south, but you should note there may be additional re-positioning fees to pay as most yachts are based out of Split.

Another option is to begin your yacht charter in Venice, Italy then cross the Adriatic to Croatia's breathtaking northern region before cruising down the coast to Zadar or Split.

Once you have decided on your perfect yacht, your yacht broker will then draw up the necessary contract; a legally binding agreement between you and the owner of the yacht. At this point, based on the type of contract, you will be required to pay 50% of the cost of the yacht up front, with an additional 25-30% of this base rate to cover additional expenses you and your guests are expected to incur whilst on charter.

For more information about the costs of chartering a yacht, please read our helpful guide:  Yacht Charter Costs Explained , which describes the fee structure in more detail.

Sailing Croatia

Sailing Croatia

Without a doubt, Croatia can be described as one of the best  kept secrets of the European sailing destinations. Sheltered by the  chain of the Dinaric Alps, its endless coastline is covered with  pristine beaches and charming medieval towns. A Croatia yacht charter is  a wonderful choice whether you are looking for a relaxed sailing  vacation with your family, or an exiting sailing adventure with your  friends. This region has many secluded islands and islets, along with a  wide variety of comfortable marinas. You can choose a boat charter in  Croatia with easy hops or longer, more challenging passages.

A Croatian sailing vacation offers a wonderful chance to explore  ancient ruins and historic cities, to stay for a night in a secluded  anchorage, or to visit traditional fishing villages - all of this in one  of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe.

Yachting is one of the most popular forms of recreation in Croatia,  thus numerous catamarans and sailboats can be seen all over the  coastline. Croatia yacht charters are well developed. Here you will find  one of the biggest European chains of modern marinas with berths for  yachts and catamarans from 30 to over 100 feet long. Anchorages,  moorings, and marinas have all the necessary amenities and are located  within a few miles of one another. In addition, while sailing in Croatia  you will find many free moorings near family restaurants where you can  sample local wines and fresh seafood right on board your own yacht.

The Adriatic coastline can be divided into three counties: Istria,  Central Dalmatia and South Dalmatia. Yacht charters in Croatia are  available all along the coast. Below are some useful tips for selecting a  boat rental in Croatia that will help you find the perfect time and  place for your dream sailing trip.

North Croatia Sailing – Istria County

North Croatia Sailing – Istria County

July to the middle of September is the best time for a yacht  charter in the northern part of Croatia. During this season the water is  warm and most days are sunny, while the prevailing wind is mild  mistral. In early spring and late autumn this area may be prone to bora,  strong local northeastern winds.

One of the most convenient places to start a North Croatia yacht  charter is in Pula, the city closest to the international airport.

During your sailing vacation in the northern region of Istria, we  recommend a visit to the former Tito`s state summer residence, his  favorite safari park in the Brijuni Islands, to walk under the ancient  pines of Mali Losinj and to sail under the picturesque Cres Island  bridge. The stunning view of the ancient Rovigno City and its main  landmark, St. Euphemia Basilica, can be seen only from the water. If you  are looking for a more challenging sailing passage in Croatia, you may  like to head from Pula directly to Venice. Within a several hour journey  you will find yourself along the Italian coast.

Southern Croatia boat rentals – Dubrovnik County

Since ancient times Croatia has had great strategic importance,  thus over the centuries various civilizations and cultures have left  part of their legacy and influence, creating a rich and diverse culture.

Sailing along the southern Adriatic Coast of Croatia is recommended  for sailors with moderate to good sailing experience. In this part of  the country, good weather and fair winds last longer into the season, so  you can explore the sights and enjoy the beauty of the Adriatic coast  until late autumn. The climate is typically Mediterranean, with hot, dry  summers and cool, wet winters.

Dubrovnik sailing vacations

A yacht charter in Dubrovnik, the southernmost region of  Croatia, offers a great variety of comfortable marinas and secluded  moorings. The medieval city of Dubrovnik is called the "Pearl of the  Adriatic" and because of its long history of maritime trade, has played  an important role since ancient times. Today its blend of historic  architecture and modern cafes and nightlife make it a fascinating  destination.

The rugged coast south of Croatia is a great choice for sailors who  value stunning scenery and historical sites more than the distance  passed. What could be better than having breakfast on board your yacht  near an ancient fortress of an old town

During a yacht charter in Croatia, you won't want to miss a visit to  Mljet National Park and the golden island of Sipan. There you will find  stunning vistas of the Dalmatian Islands and enjoy a landscape covered  with orange and tangerine trees, palms, agaves, Renaissance parks,  flower gardens and medieval stone buildings.

Sailing in Split area

The Split area is one of the most popular Croatia yacht charter  destinations. Located only 10 minutes from the airport, it attracts  sailors from all over the Europe. A Split yacht charter is an easy  starting point for a sailing vacation in Croatia, with open access to  the most stunning destinations and secluded islands.

Within a 7-day Croatia yacht charter you will be able to visit Hvar,  an island popular for its exclusive cafes and bars on the Adriatic,  learn how to extract marble on the island of Bra, visit famous Korula  island, the birthplace of Marco Polo, and soak up history and culture  with Renaissance cathedrals and ancient monuments while walking the  ancient streets of Trogir.

When sailing in the Split area do not miss a chance to visit the  waterfalls located in Krk National Park, a gorgeous destination any time  of year.

Overall, a Croatia yacht charter offers an ideal mix of history,  exquisite Mediterranean cuisine and unforgettable sailing opportunities.  With excellent infrastructure, short passages and calm waters, Croatia  yacht charters rival any other sailing destinations in the world.

It is also a perfect country for those who are looking for an unforgettable sailing adventure in Europe.

Sailing The Dalmation Islands: Split to Dubrovnik

yacht getaways croatia

If I could give just one tip to anyone thinking about visiting Croatia, it would be this; book yourself a Yacht Getaway and sail the Dalmation Islands .

Peppered with a multitude of verdant coastlines, arid plains, historic palm-fringed ports, and picturesque towns, this archipelago delivers a bite-sized portion of Croatian delights .

Here you’ll find old world charm and a sense of isolation; natural beauty is never in short supply.

YACHT GETAWAYS CROATIA EXPLORER

croatia-explorer-yacht-getaways-2

For seven days this summer I sailed the azure waters of the Adriatic with Yacht Getaways. From Split to Dubrovnik , the secluded bays and bustling streets of islands Šolta, Hvar, Šcedro, Korčula, Mljet, and Šipan brought Croatia’s vibrant culture and cuisine to life.

Want to follow in my footsteps? Here’s a snapshot of my week spent bobbing about in the ocean.

DAY ONE: SPLIT TO ŠOLTA

pano-solta-croatia

A 20 minute taxi ride was all it took to get from Split airport to the Baotic Marina in neighbouring Trogir where my Yacht Getaways’ crew, host Jackie & skipper Lane, were waiting on Dreamseeker; a Fountaine Pajot 40ft catamaran and my home for the next seven days.

Our first leg was a leisurely sail to sheltered Šešula Bay on the western shore of Šolta island.

While Lonely Planet’s volume on Croatia devotes just a couple of paragraphs to the limestone outcrop that comprises the Adriatic island of Šolta, don’t let this lack of prose deter your visit. Vineyards, olive groves, and orchards are in abundance and there are a number of quaint fishing villages to explore; here you’ll find that the traditional Croatian lifestyle is still very much the norm.

Mooring beneath restaurant Šišmiš where cobbled balconies overlook the bay below, my first evening on the Adriatic was spent enjoying freshly caught and grilled fish and fine Croatian wine from the elevated outlook of the restaurant.

DAY TWO: ŠOLTA TO STARI GRAD, HVAR

pano-stari-grad

As Yacht Getaways skipper Lane set a course south towards the island of Hvar I took up residence of the foredeck and drifted into a conscious slumber, watching as every so often a sail danced across the hazy horizon.

The crumbled geography of Dalmatia has created a mesmerising coastal landscape that sinks down into the surrounding ocean at rocky beaches and pristine coves, affording cruising yachties countless opportunities to drop anchor and explore.

After a few hours under sail and a splash about in the ocean we arrived at the historic port of Stari Grad on Hvar and moored alongside the quay. The oldest town in Croatia, Greeks from the island of Paros settled here in 384 BC; the same year noted philosopher Aristotel was born.

yacht getaways croatia

Strolling through the narrow lanes of Stari Grad’s old quarter is a civilized affair; here stone-clad streets wend their way alongside the water’s edge harbouring countless homes, café’s, and boutiques.

And in the hills overlooking the deep inlet aside which the town sits, the UNESCO Stari Grad plain (delineated by antiquated dry walls), stretches out into the distance like a fertile patchwork of earthen tones.

It was here amongst the fallows that I spent the evening at Hora winery.

HORA WINERY HVAR ISLAND

yacht getaways croatia

Situated within the most fertile and largest cultivated field on all the Mediterranean islands, Hora Winery is a heaven for foodies. Owned by the Zuvela family, their ethos of organic and sustainable produce is supported by their use of traditional Greek methods.

Everything served up at Hora, including all the wines and liqueurs, is made from organic produce grown on the property.

There’s really no turn of phrase I could offer that would truly sum up the experience, but I think the sunset photos I captured during the meal paint a picture far better than that of any words.

If you get the opportunity, revisit the island book a few nights accommodation on Hvar  and make the most of the chance to explore. It’s well worth it.

DAY THREE: HVAR TO MANASTIR BAY, ŠĆEDRO

pano-scedro-croatia

Another lazy morning soaking in views over the Adriatic and a few more ocean dips occupy the hours prior to our arrival into Manastir Bay on the tiny island of Šćedro.

A ‘dog leg’ inlet which takes its name from the now ruined Dominican monastery at the head of the bay, Manastir is somewhat isolated from the archipelago. Once within the shelter of the bay the outside world drifts out of mind.

That evening, on the shore aside the ruins I dined on the freshest fish, grilled vegetables, and homemade bread.

Uninhabited other than a ramshackle restaurant run by what appeared to be numerous generations of the Kordic family, I sat underneath an olive tree and watched as the sky above erupted into a blanket of stars. With such little light pollution the night’s sky appeared as if within reach.

That night no sounds filled the air and I woke to a tapping sound on the bow – a local fisherman had come to tempt us with his wares; fresh pastries, breads, and wine all made by his family in neighbouring Ivan Dolac, Hvar.

DAY FOUR: ŠĆEDRO TO KORČULA

pano-korchula-croatia

From the secluded bay on Šćedro we made our way across the channel towards Korčula island and our next port of call, the medieval settlement of the same name.

On approach to the historic walled town of Korčula it’s immediately apparent as to why it’s known as one of the most well-preserved medieval centres in the Adriatic. The slim bell tower of St. Mark’s Cathedral and the semi-circular form of the stern wall topped with battlements make its profile distinguishable from others in the region.

Lush, dark pine forests, vineyards, and olive groves pepper the surrounding landscape, however given the short time I had to explore I decided to stroll into the town which is often referred to as ‘Little Dubrovnik’.

One of the most romantic places I’ve visited, the Gothic Renaissance architecture and coats of arms protruding from the gates, walls, and towers that fortify the shoreline set the scene for fantasies of a Romeo and Juliet-esque encounter.

p1050298

Arranged in a herringbone pattern allowing the free circulation of air but protecting against strong winds, the streets of Korčula envelop me and I find myself revisiting routes just to enjoy again the same idyllic views.

Sundowners with the crew at Massimo’s, a unique sunset hotspot atop one of the battlements, and dinner on Šetalište Petra Kanavelića, the street that borders the shoreline on the town’s eastern edge, were the perfect end to another day in Dalmatia.

A heavy wind set the boat swaying to and fro in the early hours of the following morning, so I’m told, I slept soundly through the activity thanks to the cocktails and fine Croatian wine!

DAY FIVE: KORČULA TO LUCA POLACE BAY, MLJET

pano-mljet-croatia

Another day, another secluded bay…

From Korčula we sailed north east towards the mainland and the island of Mljet.

Encompassing the entire western quarter of the island, Mljet’s National Park is one of the most noted in the region and is known for its dazzling saltwater lakes; Malo Jezero (Little Lake) and Veliko Jezero (Big Lake).

Possibly the most appealing destination in the Adriatic for adventurous types, exploring Mjet was one of the highlights of my week.

Mooring in Luca Polače Bay host Jackie organised cycle rental from a restaurant on shore and I set out to peddle my way over to the opposite side of the national park where a Benedictine monastery sits afloat in the middle of a lake.

yacht getaways croatia

I highly recommend you hire a bike and ride the route around the lake, the delight of the pristine beauty far outweighs the short livid discomfort of the hill climb. However, if you’re so inclined there is an hourly bus service which will carry you over the incline and deliver you to the jetty where you can catch a boat out to the monastery without excerpting much effort.

That night I dined at Calypso, a restaurant on the shore of the bay which coal fire-grills its entire menu. Need I say more?

DAY SIX: MLJET TO ŠIPANSKA LUCA BAY, ŠIPAN

pano-sipan-croatia

My penultimate day on the Adriatic drew to a close far too quickly and after a fun day on the water we arrived in Šipan and moored alongside the quay. The largest of the Elaphiti Islands, Šipan is known for its laid back approach to life as well as it’s vineyards, and fig and citrus orchards.

A popular day trip from nearby Dubrovnik, it was once a chic summer getaway for affluent 15 th century families keen to escape the hustle and bustle within the city’s infamous walls; many of the properties they built still remain.

I took a leisurely stroll from the shore up to the fortified church of the Holy Spirit dating from 1577 and the parish church which contains several 15th-century paintings. From here the views boast swathes of vineyards, lush forest, and ochre rooftops that trickle down towards the water’s edge.

The path that meanders around the bay is well worth exploring. Walk north west and you’ll find a gravel beach with majestic views out over the water, or head east and you’ll find a number of restaurants and bar well situated to take in the sunset views.

That night I sampled the local black risotto; a cuttlefish dish with a rich flavour of the sea it pairs perfectly with Pošip white wine from Korčula.

DAY SEVEN: ŠIPAN TO DUBROVNIK

croatia-explorer-yacht-getaways-14

Within just a couple of hours of sailing from Šipan the majestic walls of Dubrovnik appeared on the horizon signalling the end of my trip.

At two kilometres in length and towering 25 metres above the considerable cliff face that stands high above the waves, the city’s defences are unmistakable even from a distance. Encrusted with towers and bastions, and adorned by tiny, moving figures navigating the narrow walkways atop the stone, the walls encircle the old quarter where churches, monasteries, palaces, and fountains have all stood the test of time.

From where we made port at the ACI Marina some 6 kilometres outside the city, it’s a 10-minute bus ride into the centre of Dubrovnik.

EXPLORING DUBROVNIK

yacht getaways croatia

Walking through the Pile City Gate and into the citadel just after 6pm there was a soft light illuminating the Stradun (main street) to which many of the city’s narrow lanes feed into.

Merging with the crowd I was swept into one of the side streets. Lines of washing were strung high above and a seemingly constant stream of people spilled onto the cobbled walkway in front of me from the cafes and bar tucked underneath the residences above. Ahead steps rose upwards and appeared to narrow towards a rectangular patch of sky.

Walking for 15 minutes or so I found myself aside the interior of the city’s vast wall and following my curiosity nipped into a tunnelled opening.

pano-dubrovnik-wall-croatia

Here I discovered one of the city’s best sundowner spots, Buza Bar A.K.A the Hole in the Wall. The ideal place to experience Dubrovnik’s cerulean summer style, Balearic inspired beats filled the air and I sat and sipped a cocktail as the sun sank behind the horizon.

With so much to see and do in Dubrovnik I recommend adding an additional 24/48 hours onto your seven day Croatia Explorer itinerary to really experience all the city has to offer. While I did find the time to walk the walls the following morning prior to heading off to the airport, in hindsight I would have preferred longer to explore.

SAILING WITH YACHT GETAWAYS

yacht getaways croatia

My week aboard Yacht Getaways’ luxury catamaran Dreamseeker was blissful and in my opinion Skipper Lane and host Jackie made the experience what it was; chilled, entertaining, and really enjoyable.

Breakfast and lunch on the boat each day was a sociable affair and the spread served up was bursting with Mediterranean flavours.

The cabins were well equipped with amble storage, the galley is comfy, and there’s a basic wifi connection on board to ensure you can post plenty of enviable Facebook updates throughout the week.

Croatia Yacht Charter & Sailing Vacations

Where to go • When to go • What you should know • How to Book

Croatia’s Adriatic Sea mainland coast is 1,777.3 kilometers (1,104.4 mi) long, while its 1,246 islands and islets encompass a further 4,058 kilometers (2,522 mi) of coastline. This along with the gorgeous ocean climate in the summer season, clear waters, and friendly people makes Croatia one of the more desirable and popular sailing areas in the world. The official language is Croatian, but almost everyone speaks English.

There are hundreds of yacht charter companies to choose from, some large well-known global companies and many boutique family-run companies. For a week-long sailing vacation, you can rent and skipper yourself (or hire a local skipper) small (35 ft) to large (52 ft) monohull-type sailboats as well as small (38 ft) to large (52 ft) sailing catamarans. Larger sail and power yachts are also available for hire with a skipper and crew.

Where to go on a Croatia sailing vacation?

NauticEd are sailing vacation and yacht charter agents who’ve sailed extensively in Croatia – and we can book a Croatia yacht charter for you in any of these locations. There are four main areas to sail on the Croatian coastline. Each location is easily large enough for a 2-week sailing vacation and so those seeking only a week are confined to smaller areas within each location. With all yacht charter companies, the start and finish days are on Saturdays – thus, you pick up the boat at 5pm Saturday and must return by 9am on Saturday. The first and last nights are required to be in the Marina. Thus a 1-week vacation is really only 6 days and 5 nights out exploring, while a 2-week vacation is 13 days and 12 nights out which gives a better chance to fully explore an area.

But, which area to explore? Below, we show the 4 main areas and each is unique from the other. Meaning, in this lifetime, you have to visit all the best charter destinations in Croatia. By the math above, you need at least four 2-week trips to Croatia to properly get a good introduction to this Mediterranean delight.

Scroll below for location information.

Concert promoter Live Nation is getting into the ultra-luxury cruise business — see what it'll be like on weeklong superyacht sailings starting at $3,000 a person

  • Live Nation's Vibee is getting into the ultra-luxury cruise business.
  • The music event curator says it'll charter two superyachts for three weeklong Croatia cruises this summer.
  • Like other vacation operators, Vibee says it's seen increasing demand for cruise and yacht-based trips.

Insider Today

Forget concerts — Live Nation wants music fans to start going on yacht vacations .

In 2023 and amid a boom in experiential travel , the entertainment company established Vibee, a music-based event curation arm. Less than a year later, Vibee has already executed affairs like a weekend Bahamas getaway headlined by singer Lionel Richie and a three-day Cabo San Lucas, Mexico party featuring DJ Tiësto.

Now, it's moving off-land and to the high seas with its new segment: Vibee Yacht Club.

This summer, Vibee says it'll charter two superyachts for three weeklong Croatia itineraries that are set to be, of course, centered on music.

Vibee is capitalizing on yet another increasingly popular concept: themed cruises.

Themed cruises can vary vastly, from Star Trek-centered sailings to itineraries helmed by famous comedians. And as of late, many of these niche voyages have been selling out faster than ever before.

Themed cruise operator Sixthman's November 2023 hip-hop itinerary sold out in less than five days with no publicly announced lineup.

Similarly, Vibee's first cruise, the 2023 EDSea — a wordplay on the electronic dance music festival Electric Daisy Carnival, or EDC — was fully booked in three days, again with an undisclosed lineup.

Armed with EDSea’s success, Vibee wants to dive deeper into the cruise segment — this time with a luxurious spin.

"We see the desire for cruise and yacht experiences continuing to rise," Harvey Cohen, president of Vibee, told Business Insider, echoing sentiments of the cruise industry's booming demand.

And not just the mass-market players: Over the last year, luxury cruise lines have also seen a rise in interest.

In its fourth-quarter earnings report from February 2024, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said its two high-end brands, Oceania and Regent Seven Seas, had both seen "strong demand."

The latter had launched its latest $517.9 million luxury ship a few months prior, complete with caviar and a $6 million art collection.

Luxury cruises and superyachts aren’t known to be super-affordable.

Vibee says it's chartering the 141-foot-long Lupus Mare and nearly 161-foot-long Prestige for its three yacht sailings.

Vibee Yacht Club's cheapest option starts at $3,100 per person for a two-person cabin. Comparatively, EDSea's 2024 itinerary starts at $1,405 per person for a double occupancy interior cabin.

Yet, it could be a bargain for some superyacht fans: Weeklong charters for Lupus Mare start at about $71,000 a week, according to YachtCharterFleet.

Everything is better on a yacht. Champagne? Tastes better on a yacht. Cruises in general? Better on a yacht.

Going to an international music festival? Well, Vibee thinks it would be better to stay on a yacht than in a hotel.

On July 13, the first itinerary would start on day two of Ultra Europe, a popular three-day electronic dance music festival in Split, Croatia.

Following the event, the two yachts would sail to three Croatian islands before concluding in Hvar, Croatia. Along the way, the itinerary would include daytime swims, a sunset winery visit, and several parties (day and night).

Unsurprisingly, Vibee expects the itinerary to draw in younger travelers, specifically Gen Zers and millennials.

Lupus Mare is set to be chartered for two more itineraries: “Rock the Med” and “Marafiki on the Adriatic.”

A three-person cabin for both starts at $3,500 per person.

On Rock the Med, the week is set to begin with VIP tickets to a Lenny Kravitz show at the historic Pula Arena.

Afterward, it would sail to Croatian destinations with an itinerary that would include beach excursions and clubs.

Marafiki on the Adriatic isn’t centered on a single music event.

Instead, the roundtrip Split itinerary would feature on-board musical performances, daily yoga, "cultural outings," and, of course, beach clubs.

A bonus trip to Sonus Festival, a five-day rave, is an optional add-on.

Like a typical luxury cruise, travelers would have preorganized water taxis, chefs to prepare daily breakfasts and lunches, and all the yacht amenities.

The 20-cabin, 40-guest Prestige flexes indulgences like an indoor lounge, a hot tub, and a sundeck with plenty of beds.

Meanwhile, the 15-cabin, 34-guest Lupus Mare has comforts like a sauna and gym.

Travelers could wind down in the yacht's movie theater or hot tub. Or, they could take a slide into the water.

It’s no surprise Vibee is going the more sumptuous route with its itinerary-focused yacht concept.

" Revenge travel " might as well be known as "regular travel" at this point: People have continued to spend big on extravagant vacations, especially on luxury small cruise ships and trips planned around experiences and adventures.

Both are niches Vibee is trying to carve out for itself: Looking ahead, the new brand is already planning more music and sea-based vacations, Cohen told Business Insider.
