The name Cyclades comes from the Greek word “kyklos” which means circle; the islands encircle the sacred island of Delos, where Apollo was born. The famous and bigger islands of the archipelago include Santorini, Mykonos, Milos, Ios, Naxos, and Paros. Some of the lesser-known and yet smaller islands include Serifos, Sifnos, Folegandros, Kythnos, Tinos, and Amorgos. Since the sea is close to the mainland, some of the earliest maritime routes and artistic expressions started in the Cyclades, meaning trade was a fundamental aspect in the Aegean Sea. Nowadays, the whitewashed houses and rocks that are enclosed by the sea are a typical representation of the Cyclades. The buildings are in perfect harmony with the natural environment. This has constantly brought visitors yearly who want to enjoy a great sailing vacation and admire the dramatic landscapes.

A catamaran charter in the Cyclades can begin from Athens, but ideally,  you would want to start from Mykonos or Santorini. This way, you can immediately begin exploring the Cyclades islands.  Mykonos sets a vibrant social scene where many rich and famous arrive on mega yachts. You can enjoy a wonderful night by the clubs or plan a short cruise to Delos. You can also head to Tinos or Symi where you can enjoy the traditional side of Greek culture and lifestyle. If you are visiting during peak months of late July and August, we then recommend you to head to Symi, in Finikas, which offers good protection from the Meltemi winds. Tinos and Andros are the windiest islands in the Cyclades during this period. Alternatively, if you choose to depart from Santorini, you can then head to Folegandros. This is known to be a secret gem with stunning beaches. The main town of Chora will also offer guests a magnificent view of the vast Aegean Sea.

You also have the option to go from Santorini to Milos on a day trip; both islands exhibit gorgeous landscapes, due to the volcanic activity that occurred in the ancient years. Taking pictures on board of the multi-colored volcanic beaches, including the white and black beaches of Santorini or the famous Sarakiniko beach of Milos, will leave you breathless. For an extended catamaran charter in the Cyclades, you can go a little further to other islands, such as Kythnos, which has numerous anchorages and beautiful serene bays that are also fairly untouched from tourism. Some great destinations in between include Sifnos which is famed for its pottery and known for its top cuisine in the entire complex. If you go a little farther, you can reach Serifos, which has been forever bound with the mythical Perseus; its bustling cobblestone streets by the harbor are a walking paradise. Finally, if you wish to travel around the Cyclades islands on a catamaran charter, you can visit many more islands, such as Naxos, Paros, and Koufonisia.

A catamaran cruise in the Cyclades starting from Paros is also an excellent choice. Paros is very well connected to a lot of its neighboring islands. The port of Naoussa sits in a picturesque bay and offers the largest fleet of fishing boats in the Cyclades; all types of catamaran can depart from here. A lot of charterers head from the Port of Parikia to Naoussa so they can admire the golden-sand beaches, hidden coves, and beautiful caves. Do not miss the chance to visit the Blue Lagoon and Kolymbithres beach on a one-day cruise. From those renowned ports, you can easily head to Ios, the island of Homer’s mother, which has beautiful beaches and offers a vivid nightlife with exhilarating parties. You also have the option to go for sensational excursions to low-populated or completely uninhabited islands such as Antiparos, Donousa, Heraklion, Kimolos, Koufonisia, and Schinoussa. These islands offer an exotic escape, crystal-clear waters and are ideal for a relaxing getaway. They are also easily accessible from Naxos, the largest island in the complex. A great way to finish off your trip is by visiting Amorgos, one of the farthest islands, offering its visitors the ultimate getaway.

Below you will find some useful information for your catamaran charter in the Cyclades.

Old Port in Chora, Mykonos: located on the western coast of Mykonos; several rocks are near the quays so when anchoring care should be taken. The Northeast has the best mooring spot but the new port of Mykonos offers better berthing sections.

Mykonos International Airport: is 4km away from the main town, Chora, and is roughly 15 minutes away from the port by car/taxi.

New Port/Marina Tourlos, Mykonos: located 20km from the old port and has a 700m length quay. The best berthing section is on the inner-north side of the quay. Has good restaurants within walking distance and the marina can accommodate up to 220 yachts at a length of 25m. Provides water and electricity supplies as well.

Vlychada Marina, Santorini: is about 20 minutes from Fira Village. It is a great marina and offers the safest anchorage in Santorini. However, a few berths are available at the shallow depth of 2-3m. This is not an issue, since a lot of sailing vessels can only just dock overnight.

Santorini, Thira International Airport: is roughly a 10min drive from the Vlychada marina.

Karavostasi Marina, Ios: has a maximum length of 60m for yachts but gives immediate access to the Aegean sea; it offers water and electricity supplies. Excellent shelter against the Meltemi.

Marina Naxos: offers 70 berths in total with a max length of 20m and a depth of 3.5m. Visitors will have access to water and electricity and amenities such as shops, bars; has restaurants in close proximity.

Naxos Airport: is 4km southwest of the island’s capital, Chora, and is 10 min away by car.

Naoussa Marina/Harbour, Paros: provides excellent shelter and has numerous shops and tavernas in its town. Although it can get crowded in July-August from both visiting boats and ferries, there is an excellent anchorage in Ag. Ioannis Cove on the northern side of the bay; is very well sheltered. The marina has a berthing capacity of 70 yachts, fuel is available, and there is a good bus service to Parika, the capital of the island. The southeast quayside is affected by the swell from the strong winds at times, so make sure you moor alongside in calm weather.

Paros National Airport: is roughly 30 min away from Naoussa Marina. If you want a more convenient port, then head to Port of Parikia, which is just 10 minutes away, offering berths for all kinds of vessels.

Adamas/Adamantas Marina, Milos:  great shelter from the W-E winds, excellent services with specialized staff at the dockside, and facilities such as free Wi-Fi; showers are available too. Offers 50 berths at a depth of 5m.

Milos Airport: is roughly 10 minutes from the marina by bus or by car ( 4.7km away). The flight from Athens to Milos is 40 min.

Marina Ermoupoli, Syros: Ermoupoli is the cosmopolitan main town and the capital of the Cycladic islands. The marina is active 24 hours a day and provides berthing for about 100 boats at a length of 40ft. Protected from all the weather conditions except the S-E winds.

Syros Aiport: is 4 min away from the center and 2km from the marina. The flight from Athens is 30 min long.

Platis Gialos Marina, Sifnos: one of the most protected marinas in the Cyclades islands.  It is very easy to berth here and has all the services and facilities you might need.

The fastest ferry route between Athens and Cyclades is Lavrio to Kea, which takes about 1 hour.

Anchorages spots for yachts in the Cyclades:

Megali Ammos, Mykonos: a large bay that is close to the town. An occasional swell may come in but usually in the north quadrant. Has a popular beach where many can relax and swim in the bay.

Rhenia islet: has a great and quiet bay for a trip to Delos and good holding, but make sure you keep to the middle to avoid the fishing buoy on the entrance.

Aliki Harbour, Paros: a small fishing harbor on the SW corner of Paros, offering a quiet anchorage and good shelter year-round. The holding is good if you anchor in the sand. You can even land a dinghy in the tiny inner harbor. Aliki is close to the airport, so boat hire in Paros is also recommended here.

Marmara Bay, Paros: a well-sheltered bay, open to the east coast of Paros. The holding is good and has depths of 5m. The village of Marmara is a 20 min walk away.

Ormos Mylopotas, Ios: a great alternative to the main Chora harbor in Ios and much quieter. The holding in the bay is good at a depth of 8m. There is even a dinghy quay in the SE corner by the taverna close to the resort. Supplies can be obtained from the shops or resorts.

Oia, Santorini: the anchorage here has reasonable shelter from the Meltemi with about 8 buoys; you can view the Caldera from the cliffs in the town and admire the sunset.

Provatas Bay, Milos: on the south coast of the island, which offers much room for yachts of all sizes; has good protection from the northern Meltemi winds.

Megas Bay, Syros: has 3 small bays where the east has the best holding with calm conditions and shelter from the south-westerlies.

Vari Bay, Syros: a large bay with clear water and good shelter. There is also a fishing harbor ashore where few smaller vessels tend to anchor.

Faros, Sifnos: you can anchor in the fishing harbor, which has good holding and a great taverna above the small bay.

Myrsini cove, Schinoussa: a large narrow bay on the west coast of the island. Watch out for the ferries and moor alongside the jetty. The anchorage is sheltered from all directions except the southerly. Some beaches, tavernas, and shops are ashore.

Pori Bay, Koufonisia: a semi-circular bay sheltered very well from the winds. A fine beach and a couple of tavernas are also ashore. In the bay to the north, you can go snorkeling in caves.

CATAMARAN CHARTER   CYCLADES  ISLANDS

Catamarans are characterised by their two hulls, which provide not only significantly more stability but also more space, privacy, and comfort than a classic monohull sailing yacht. All catamarans have fantastic sundecks, trampolines, and a spacious living room, which offers excellent views on the beautiful Greek scenery. Catamarans usually have a considerable small draft which allows them to get into shallow waters close to the shore. They are an ideal choice for a cruise with a group of friends or family.

You may start your sailing trip to Cyclades from different marinas, according to yacht availability, flight schedules, charter duration and desired itineraries: Marina Lavrion (Athens area), Marina Alimos (Athens), Marina Zeas (Athens), Marina Agios Kosmas (Athens), Marina Vouliagmeni (Athens), Marina Flisvos (Athens), Marina Paros (Cyclades), Marina Mykonos (Cyclades) and Marina Santorini (Cyclades).

You may see below our wide range of catamarans that can be offered for bareboat charter, skippered charter, or crewed charter.

Please note that for a bareboat charter you need to hold a valid International Certificate of Competence (ICC). If you are holding an ASA or RYA equivalent license, it can be easily converted into an ICC in your home country. We further advise that at least one additional guest holds an RYA Competent Crew Certificate or equivalent.

Cyclades Islands

Cyclades is the term given to one of the many beautiful groups of islands that lie in the vicinity of Greece. This group of islands was given its name because it forms a cycle around the holy land of Delos. Due to the close proximity of the islands to one another, the sailing schedule can be loosened up, which results in extra time for vacation activities like sight-seeing and shopping.

The islands are most famous for its history, art, and civilisation that dates back to the Bronze Age. In addition, the islands provide a breathtaking range of gorgeous coasts, pristine beaches, local handicrafts, entertainment, and diving opportunities.

The Cyclades are the archetypal Greek islands; they are composed of rocky outcrops that are adorned with sparkling white houses that are contrasted by bright blue church domes; all of this is bathed in radiant light and is fringed with golden beaches that are kissed by azure seas.

Mythology has it that all of the islands come together to form an invisible circle (kyklos) around the island of Delos, which was revered as holy ground because it was Apollo, the god of lightbirthplace. ,’s The islands are convenient for island hopping due to their modest size and close proximity to one another.

The advantages of sailing in Greece mean that mooring in the cove of a beautiful Greek village or town often costs nothing! On the occasion that you do have to pay a little something, for a 38ft yacht for example, it’s not usually any more than $20.

Climate and Sailing Conditions in the Cyclades

The most important factor to consider in terms of climate and conditions of the Cyclades is the meltemi wind. This wind is very similar to France’s northerly mistral, yet due to the lack of mainland surrounding these southerly Greek islands, the meltemi wind can pick up to blow at force 5-7, sometimes even 8. The wind can differ from a north-easterly to a north-westerly direction. Hereby, we recommend this area for experience navigators and sailors in search of a challenge. The meltemi wind starts to blow in June, with its strongest months being the peak months of summer. By September and October it tends to have died down. For better chance of avoiding the sharp winds, we suggest sailing in the mornings when the winds are typically lighter.

Chartering a boat is highly recommendable during May and June or September and October when temperatures are in the mid-twenties and the meltemi weaker. The Cyclades climate is typically mediterranean and can reach up to over 30°C. This is also a a brilliant time to visit as the islands are not as populous in terms of other visitors and tourists.

The Saronic Gulf is more tranquil during the peak season months if you prefer a calmer, easier sail.

Itinerary Ideas for the Cyclades

Regardless of where you choose for your boat rental in the Cyclades Islands, you can’t go wrong as Mykonos, Paros and Santorini all have something special.

Mykonos is a vibrant cosmopolitan island coupled with the beauty of its gorgeous beaches and own special something: the windmills of Kato Mili. This town springs to life in the summer season, full of bars, nightclubs and sunkissed party goers. The fine Greek architecture here is also truly marvellous.

One of the most talked about islands in the whole of Greece, Santorini is picturesque with it’s blue domed buildings and precious white houses. Enjoy walking the scenic coastal routes of the island, wine tasting and watching the sunset in this unique setting. Santorini has an elaborate volcanic history which once caused parts of the island to sink, breaking the famous island circle.

Paros is famous for its charming coastal villages and stunning coves and bays. Visit the capital Parikia and the delightful town of Naousa, where you can lose yourself in the shops, as well as cafes and restaurants serving delicious Greek food. On the south-eastern coast, Golden Beach is a top beach attraction for all.

Many of our boat charters in the Cyclades come with the option of sailing with a skipper and/or crew. Although this may come at an extra cost, having a skipper on board can, no doubt, provide you with an even more enjoyable experience! Your skipper can adapt the sailing route so that your voyage best suits the desires of you and the rest of your party.

Additionally, setting sail with a skipper will make your voyage even more comfortable! The skipper will take care of all the technical aspects of sailing, so all you need to do is sit back and relax.

If you would like to take charge of your boat charter in the Cyclades, then bareboat charters are the way to go. Enjoy a bareboat charter if you have a license and set sail at your own pace. You need a valid boating license to enjoy a boat this way so check with the boat owner beforehand to see that your license is valid.

When is the best time of year to rent a boat?

During the high season, which spans from June to August , the Cyclades enjoys warm and sunny weather, with average temperatures in the 70s°F. This makes it the perfect time to enjoy boat rentals and explore the stunning coastline of the Cyclades, indulging in various water activities and soaking up the Aegean sunshine.

In the months just outside of the high season, specifically May and September , average temperatures in the Cyclades range from the 60s°F to low 70s°F. The weather during these months is pleasant, providing comfortable conditions for boating activities while avoiding the peak tourist crowds of the high season. It's an ideal time to visit if you prefer milder temperatures and a more relaxed atmosphere, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the Cyclades at a quieter pace.

What type of boat is best for a Cyclades boat charter?

Before choosing the right vessel for your boat rental in the Cyclades, you first have to think about the duration of your holiday. If you’re only going to sail for a few days, it is best to opt for a daily charter such as a motorboat or a RIB. With the speed of these vessels, you’ll be able to see everything on your wish list in no time. If you’re planning a longer charter of a week or more you should choose a vessel that includes amenities you’ll need during your stay. Catamarans and yachts have the space and accommodations on board to ensure a comfortable stay on the water. For a more luxurious holiday, you might consider a gulet, and for an authentic sailing experience a sailboat.

If you’re unsure about whether or not a vessel suits your needs, feel free to contact the boat owners to get a better sense of what is included on board. With our large fleet, you’ll have no problem finding the perfect boat for your Cyclades boat charter!

Borrow A Boat is the best place to find and rent boats of all sorts, from a canal and riverboat across Europe to a sailing boat, motorboat, catamaran across North America, the Mediterranean, Caribbean and further afield, along with some of the world's most impressive superyachts and luxury yacht charters.

Boats or Yachts Available For Rent Or Charter In Cyclades

Where it comes to chartering or renting boats in Cyclades below is a list of the typical types of boats that you can hire on Borrow A Boat with a description of the boat type. If you can't find the individual boat charter you are looking for when you do a search in [location name] it's worthwhile searching nearby locations as your chosen boat type might be available nearby.

When searching a geographical area on Borrow A Boat you can filter by the below boat types. There is also the option to further filter your searches by price, the number of guests, cabins or bathrooms, what year the boat or sailing yacht was launched, the boat length and the boat manufacturer.

Sailboat: From €120/£100/$135 a day up to whatever you can afford, monohull sailing yachts are fun to sail at all points of the wind and an affordable way to get around if your island hopping or finding your own secluded coves or sandy beaches along with longer cruises. Sizes range from those for a couple or small family to a full sized luxury charter yacht.

Catamaran: Luxury catamarans are stable and spacious, with quick sailing performance, and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull. Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the staterooms as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.

Power Catamaran: These types of boats are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam also means more deck space and as they don't have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter, consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced captain.

Luxury Yacht: Luxury yacht charters are available for either a sailing yacht (sailboat), catamaran or motorboat and will have a crew and host/hostess on hand to cater for whatever your needs are along with a captain who will have a detailed knowledge of your cruising area. On a crewed yacht charter of this kind you get to create your own personal itinerary and will have far greater range than on other boats which allows for lots of variety in how you travel and what you do.

Superyacht: A superyacht or sometimes called mega yacht are boats which are least 24 metres (79 feet) in length up to 180 metres (590 feet) and can either be sailing yachts (sailboats) or motorboats. These types of boats are most frequently found in the Med of Caribbean and due to their size they will have a large chartering area and can typically pick you up from whatever location you require rather than you being required to get to a set marina to start your charter. They are fully crewed with professional staff who will cater for your every need along with a captain who will have extensive knowledge of your chosen cruising areas.

Motorboat: This covers a wide variety of boats from a motor yacht with cabins to a private boat trip for a fishing trip but all of the these are comfortable seagoing boats with a kick of speed should you want to cover a bigger distance on the day.

RIB: Very much day boats for fishing and day cruising, RIBs are a lot of fun for a day afloat. They can be very quick and are great should you be in a town on holiday and fancy seeing the coast or finding secluded sandy beaches to get away from it all.

Captained Yacht Charter or Bareboat

When it comes to boat rental or yacht charter in Cyclades you typically have two choices - bareboat yacht rental or captained yacht charter.

When using Borrow A Boat you can filter all boat searches to be with or without a captain depending on what you are looking for and below we cover some of the main points to consider for your boat rental.

Captained Charter: A captained yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications before hand. For a monohull sailing yacht you will pay €120/£100/$135 plus a day extra for the captain, as well as their food and a tip at the end.

When you get to a luxury yacht or superyacht charter with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of boat rental on your sailing holiday.

In some cases captains will also be the yacht or boat owners (typically day trips) which means they will know all the best secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

For day trips you will often be able to use a captain as well and prices will vary depending on the type of boat.

Bareboat Yacht Charter: For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the boat while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can captain these boats (typically up to 54 feet/16.5 metres in length) yourself.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Yacht In Cyclades

If you are on a gulet or captained yacht charter you do not need a license to sail a yacht out of Cyclades. This is also the case where you are renting a small motorboat without a cabin for a day trip around the local islands or beaches.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter, here are some examples of sailing qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will be able to take a bareboat charter out of Cyclades, these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted.

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat rental before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a captain then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

We are confident that our prices are the most competitive and transparent in the market.

We won't charge any booking fees when you make a booking with us.

We have the highest number of verified and vetted boats available on the market.

Best time to Visit the Cyclades Islands in Greece

When should you set sail to these beautiful islands? Enjoy a Mediterranean climate and the sun? Here, the summer months consist of warm, dry weather. In contrast, winter months tend to be cooler and rainy. A yacht charter in Lefkada would be ideal during June and September. These months you will be able to soak up the glorious sun while avoiding the crowds that come into town during the peak season (July – August). For those looking to rent a boat during these peak months, it is recommended to book in advance to avoid high costs and have the best options available.

When planning a yacht charter trip, you need to decide on the length of your charter. Our yacht charters are usually bookable for a minimum of one week. We recommend guests spend one to two weeks sailing in the Cyclades area.

Do you already have dates in mind for your trip? Contact one of our expert charter advisors, who can provide all the details you need to decide on your boat rental. Please note that the price of a yacht charter will vary depending on the time of year. If you choose to charter a yacht in the high season, the price will likely be higher than other less popular times of the year.

Choosing the perfect boat to rent for a sailing trip in the Cyclades

Regarding yacht rental, the options can seem overwhelming! At GlobeSailor, we have boats of all shapes and sizes for you to rent. Our yachts range in length, cabins, berths, boat model, when they were built, add-ons such as a dinghy or water sports equipment, and of course, price.

Your choice of cabins will vary depending on the sailboat or catamaran you choose. Usually, cabins will be single or doubles, meaning they can accommodate one or two people. There are also double cabins for individual use available on some boats, which is a cabin option for one guest who wishes to have more space aboard the yacht.

We offer guests a choice between a sailboat, catamaran, power boat, luxury yacht, gulet or even houseboat! The choices are endless!

Most guests choose either a sailboat or a catamaran to rent. Both boats have unique characteristics to satisfy the varying needs of clients.

A monohull or a sailboat is a traditional boat with one hull (mono!). It is focused on performance and offers sailors the traditional sailing experience. Many sailors like the traditional feel of a monohull. A monohull might be best for you if you fancy yourself a true captain of the seas! GlobeSailor has many boat rentals for our guests to choose from, including popular models like Oceanis or DuFour Grand Large.

Catamarans have more than one hull. The multihull of a catamaran offers its guests more stability as it the boat is equipped to rock less against the ocean waves. A catamaran is also more spacious than a monohull. Catamarans usually range from 30 feet to 60 feet, with the average length being around 45 feet. Catamarans have less heeling (tilting) than monohulls, providing passengers a more comfortable and stable ride. Catamarans also have a shallower draft, which means they can sail in waters with a low tide and get closer to shore. The GlobeSailor catamaran fleet is massive, offering guests options for whatever charters they have in mind. Popular models such as the Lagoon 46 and the Bali 4.5 model can be found on our website.

Sailing Bareboat or With a Crew in Greece

Sailing bareboat or with a skipper and crew is a personal preference and depends on several factors, such as experience, comfort level, and budget. Suppose you are an experienced sailor with a good understanding of navigation. In that case, yacht charters without a skipper (also called bareboat) can be a rewarding adventure, providing more freedom and flexibility to explore the destination at your own pace. However, if you are a beginner or prefer a more relaxed sailing trip, sailing with a skipper is the best option. A skipper is like the captain of the boat, and they can provide guidance, help you with the nitty-gritty details, and ensure the safety of the crew and the yacht. A skipper can help guests create the perfect itinerary for your sailing trip. Once your perfect itinerary is built, you can sit back and relax for the week while your skipper takes you sailing in the most beautiful destinations in all of Greece.

There is also an option to have a hostess or a cook on board GlobeSailor yachts. A hostess is responsible for making two of the daily meals (usually breakfast and lunch) and will take care of the boat's upkeep (tidying up common areas etc.). A cook is responsible for making all three meals on board the boat. Both crewed options allow clients to eat Greek dishes aboard a beautiful sailboat. Some guests prefer to choose the hostess option as it allows them to sail to a different marina each night and find the best authentic Greek restaurants on land. Sailing with a full crew offers guests an extra element of luxury as all the details are taken care of for you by the wonderful crew.

Please note the price of your charter will vary depending on whether you choose a bareboat or a crewed option. Each crew member option is a different price and might change depending on your specific yacht type. To enquire about the price of each option, please contact one of our booking advisors who can provide you with more details on each of the rentals available in the Cyclades islands.

The Cyclades are a destination for experienced sailor only. If you do not have strong skills in high wind condition, we recommend that you hire a skipper or select an easier sailing destination.

In July and August, the Meltemi, a strong dry northerly wind, blows in the Aegean Sea, particularly in the Cyclades islands. The Meltemi wind can reach speeds of up to 8-9 on the Beaufort scale and can last for several days, making it a significant weather factor for sailors.

July and August are, also, the busiest months, with many tourists visiting the islands, so if you prefer a quieter sailing vacation, consider traveling in May, June, or September.

Paros: A charming island with traditional villages, beautiful beaches, and excellent sailing conditions.

Naxos: The largest island in the Cyclades, Naxos offers a mix of history, culture, and stunning landscapes.

Santorini’s largest port is Athinios, located on the western side of the island. Locals also refer to it as New Port or Thira Port. It can accommodate hundreds of yachts. It is very well-equipped. There are drinking water, electricity and a refuelling station. The port is very busy, especially in the high season.

Skala Port (Santorini)

This is the old port, located near the town of Fira, the tourist centre of Santorini. It is small in size, so larger boats cannot berth here. The passengers of such boats are transported to the mainland by water taxi. You can reach the town by climbing 600 steps of stairs. You can go on foot, with a cable car or on the back of a donkey. If you get hungry, there are restaurants and taverns in the port. You can buy souvenirs and local delicacies in the smaller shops.

Ammoudi Port

The picturesque Ammoudi is on the northwestern coast of Santorini, next to Oia. It is only 13 km from Firas. The small port can accommodate yachts up to 20 metres in length. There are traditional fish taverns on the beach where you can try fresh seafood dishes and local delicacies as well.

Vlychada Port

The recently opened Vlychada is the most protected port on Santorini. It can accommodate boats up to 25 metres in length. The depth of the seabed is 4 metres. What do I have to do?

Mykonos sailing the Greek islands cyclades

Sailing the Greek islands

Our departure point for your sailing holidays to the cyclades and the greek islands, we start our trip from the center of the cyclades. this means either from paros or from mykonos.

The access to both of the islands (Mykonos and Paros) is very easy and convenient. In fact, you can easy just fly out of Athens or you can take one of the many daily ferries. Athens, Santorini and also most of the other islands in the Cyclades archipelago are connected by ferries.

The Cyclades archipelago has so much to offer! In our consideration, sailing from the heart of the archipelago will provide de best possible experience. Because of their location, starting our sailing trips from either Paros or Mykonos means that we can easily reach the neighboring islands in just one tack. Usually this means that we will rarely zigzag against the wind, trying to reach our destination.

Sailing around the Cyclades with skipper. Rent a boat in Greece and visit the Greek islands!

Still thinking if you should rent a sailboat in Greece? How a boat charter to the Greek islands looks like.

Some of the islands are very well known, like Mykonos and Santorini. But the Cyclades archipelago offer an amazing mix of wilderness and cosmopolitan places. Here you will find incredible architecture in Santorini and Syros. Besides that, you will mixed them with the long sandy beaches of Paros , Mykonos and Naxos , and with the wild swimming spots of Milos and Polyegos.   And let’s not forget about the beautiful tiny of-the-beaten-path islands like Schinoussa and Kimolos .

The archipelago offers and ideal sailing distance in between the islands. In other words, long enough to enjoy your sailing legs, but in the same time short enough to limit the crossing in between the islands to 2-4 hours.

This is why we sometimes alternate our regular departure and end islands (Paros and Mykonos) with departure and arrival from Athens.

Sailing the Cyclades, Greece - Frequently asked questions

Can i customize the itinerary .

Definitely – the beauty of a sailing cruise is to experience a dream voyage tailored to your wishes. However bear in mind that sailing is about taking the wind and weather conditions into account. In fact, your captain will advice you on the best sailing route.

Also sailing conditions vary greatly across different sailing grounds. There are areas with easy to moderate sailing condition year round. But also there are areas that can sometimes can get very windy/choppy. Please feel free to ask us more details before booking if you would like to get to a specific island.

Some of the itineraries are possible even when the winds are strong. But there are also some of them that we do not  recommend when when winds are strong. This is mainly due to high sea and less sheltered places from the winds.

All in all, the key to a perfect sailing holiday is keeping flexible.

What is the embarkation time? When do we start sailing?

Usually our cruises are 7 days.  For the most part, the embarkation is on Monday 10.00 a.m and disembarkation on Sunday 04.30 pm. But upon previous agreement, other days might be arranged. Contact us to inform us of your favorite departure date.

What are the meal arrangements? What about food and drink?

Food and drink are not included in a skippered charter. This means that each day you will enjoy fantastic food and wine at friendly water-side taverns at each island.

Breakfast: it’s just a small decision of how you would feel that morning. You can either go on-shore and have breakfast and coffee. Behind the boat, in all of the Greek islands there will be many restaurants . Or if you prefer, you can make your breakfast on board.

Lunch : the best and most relaxing thing to do is to plan for a light snack on board. Most probably you will be spending the day sailing, enjoying a beautiful crystal clear water bay, swimming and sunbathing. In conclusion, there is no point to interrupt these wonderful activities in order to find a restaurant.

Dinner : the best decision would be on shore. In fact, you will have many options of traditional Greek taverns to choose from. At every place of harbor you will be spending the night you will find taverns serving delicious food. Given these points, the Greek cuisine is something that you should not miss. For example, every island has its own specialty, and yes, you have to taste them all!

The skipper will be happy to recommend a great restaurant at each place you will visit.

Catamarans for Charter in Greece

Sailing Catamaran charters in Greece are a convenient way to have a larger number of guests (up to 12) on a comfortable crewed yacht charter.

Notice that the distances in Greece are quite long . Since most luxury catamarans are based in Athens (inquire for Mykonos-based  catamarans ), the ideal catamaran charter itinerary will include the Saronic Islands of Aegina and Hydra .

For a Catamaran charter in the Cyclades , especially if you are planning to visit Santorini , we recommend chartering out of Mykonos. Our brokers will find you a Mykonos-based yacht or arrange a delivery of your desired yacht to the starting location of your charter vacation. Start a chat to tell us what you’re looking for in your catamaran charter, we’re here for you 24/7!

How to charter crewed catamarans in Greece

Ideally, you will inquire about a catamaran charter 12 months in advance . WHY? The best catamarans are often fully booked long in advance and it is not unusual to see popular dates booked 2 summers ahead for a Greek Island yacht charter .

Inquiring less than 6 months ahead often means that your first choice is unavailable for charter. Additionally you might find that the yacht you want can’t make it to the port where you wish to commence your yacht charter.

This is especially important if you are planning to charter in the popular destination -the  Cyclades  (and we recommend  you fly into  Mykonos   international airport to start there). Many things have to fall into place to make a succesfull charter vaccation happen, so  inquire early!

  • Most luxury catamarans are based in Athens (marinas from Piraeus in the west to Saunio in the east).
  • Of the catamarans permanently based in the Cyclades , most have temporary availability.
  • You will also find catamarans based in the Ionian islands available for charter.

Best Areas to Charter Catamarans

The best areas to charter catamarans will have small distances between destinations and calm waters. Although they are more capable of crossing oceans, catamarans are slower than motor yachts, which is why they aren’t good for long distance itineraries.

Taking a group of 2 families with young kids who have not chartered before from Athens to Santorini (because why do the additional flight to Mykonos, right?) in August with the Meltemi winds blazing is not the greatest idea for a relaxed sailing vacation. – We’re happy to provide references for people who insisted, only to regret their Indiana Jones type of vacation.

If you’re afraid there is nothing to see apart from Santorini and Mykonos in the Cyclades Islands? Let Peter show you these assorted charter locations in the Saronic Gulf in the video below…

My Greek Odyssey - Epidavros

My Greek Odyssey - Epidavros

The Saronic Gulf is perfect for first-time charterers – with 2 to 4 hours cruise between islands outside of the Meltemi winds, fantastic locations , and amazing things to do such as the Pistachios of Aegina , walking the old town of Poros or snorkeling the Sunken City of Ancient Epidaurus .

rent a catamaran cyclades

Second up are the Cyclades Islands – still perfectly doable on a 7-day crewed catamaran charter, especially if you plan on starting in the actual Cyclades instead of “ taxiing ” there from Athens . In the cyclades captaina are in a great position to account for the weather (instead of having to cross large distances) and provide a pleasurable yacht charter either hitting the hot spots – windmills of Mykonos (or it’s vibrant night clubs), the sights of the city of Thira on Santorini , the ancient Delos – or the hidden gems such as the forgotten island of Anafi .

Yacht Charter: 3 Most Common Mistakes You'll 100% Make

Yacht Charter: 3 Most Common Mistakes You'll 100% Make

Is the cyclades islands a great area for a catamaran charter.

Yes and no – if planned well and with the expectation that things might change last minute dictated by the weather, a catamaran charter in the Cyclades can be a relaxing and pleasurable experience in the Aegean sea. If you’re an exact planner, and not willing to be flexible, it is wise to avoid it .

A yacht charter is subject to the elements – if the weather is bad, the port authority bans all the yachts to depart (usually just the motor yachts, but do you really want to be out there?). That happens in some areas more than in others, and it does happen more frequently in the Cyclades Islands .

We’ve had experiences where a stubborn travel agent (yes, we cooperate with travel agents on the condition we’re taken seriously) has booked activities on a rigid itinerary with total disregard for the weather conditions and its unpredictability. – Horse ride on Siros, dinner reservation in Skorpios on Mykonos, wine tasting on Santorini starting at 9 am sharp on a Saturday morning – you need Poseidon’s blessing to commit to that…

GREECE: BEST TIPS for Luxury Yacht / Catamaran Charters

A good broker and a good captain will list your preferred activities and pre-arrange them on a confirmation basis . Due to our long time in the industry, we have build relationships with many businesses, attractions, restaurants, and activity providers. We can get you to stuff you did not know existed – Would you for example like to have a private dinner in an iconic ancient ruin ? Would you like to have a famous singer show up at your birthday party at Mykonos? Say the word, and we will make it happen!

The Three Bells of Fira. One of the most recognized places in the world and an absolute bucket list material.

Advantages of chartering a crewed catamaran in Greece

  • Lower fuel consumption compared to motor yachts.
  • Lower cost, especially for catamarans under 50 ft.
  • Shallow draft – you can get quite close to secluded beaches and white sands with a catamaran charter.
  • Access to the dock – especially in high season, bigger yachts might need to stay out of the harbor and access with a dinghy.
  • Captain + stewardess still the most common crew combination (keeps the costs down), bigger – motor yacht like luxury catamarans are on the rise (with more crew).
  • Gratuity – a 10% gratuity paid after the Catamaran charter is considered completely satisfactory in Greece. Compare that to the (up to) 25% mandatory gratuity that is increasingly being demanded in escrow pre-charter in the Caribbean or the Bahamas.
  • Use of water toys and water sports – rules are more relaxed and definitely less enforced compared to France or Italy – it’s not the same if you get on a jetski in a secluded bay on Iraklia or in the overcrowded Gulf of St Tropez.

Mykonos Greece Island

Disadvantages of chartering a catamaran in Greece

  • Low speed mandating a limited itinerary or a lot of sailing hours – It is not unusual for a catamaran charter to move before sunrise to break it up. Can be mitigated by starting in the destination – Mykonos, Santorini, Lefkada (Ionian), Patmos or Ikaria (Dodecanese), Skiathos (Sporades – Mamma Mia Islands)
  • Smaller crew – used to be 2 crew members, now growing (it’s both a positive and a negative) as per your price sensitivity. Compared to the Caribbean – there are more options.
  • Vertical layout – 2 or 3 decks on a horizontally constrained area.

Catamarans vs Motor Yachts

Charter yachts are rapidly growing in size, keeping up with an ever increasing demand for the most luxurious vessel on the market. – In 2020 , the average length of a crewed catamaran was 45 feet . Where, at the end of 2023, the average size of a new catamaran charter was 67 feet .

Given a crazy expansion of the crewed catamaran fleet (demanding a whole new boat show to accommodate this segment starting in 2023 ), the catamarans are getting closer in onboard capacity to motor yachts.  If you’re looking to get a recent Lagoon 52 catamaran sailing charter with crew, inquire early.

Catamaran Elly - A great example of the intersection of motor yachts and catamarans - a recent trend starting in 2022

As mentioned ealier Power catamarans will generally have a lower fuel consumption,  with comparable deck space at the expense of speed. Catamaran charter will be able to get closer to the beach and will get to marinas easier than a huge motor yacht that had a change of itinerary and is looking for a last-minute spot on the dock (and will probably anchor out, hailing the guests from shore with a dinghy).

With the deck space being comparable in Catamaran Charter- the choice is yours – are you looking for a wider deck that’s arguably more casual for a group to sit down, or are you looking to have a bottle of something really nice served to you on the aft deck of a Ferretti motor yacht ?

Some catamarans have moved it's base from Athens to Cape Sounion (Laurio)- the southernmost cape of Attica and the Gateway to the Cyclades - an interesting option to land in Athens and still start
