You've been invited to a meal or event at a local yacht club, but you've never been to one before. Suddenly, the panic sets in. What should you wear? Fortunately, there are lots of options and visiting a yacht club does not mean you have to spend a lot of money just to fit in. This post will give you some pointers on yacht club attire so that you feel neither under nor overdressed, and can really enjoy yourself and have a great time at the club.

Before you even think about what to wear, check to see if the yacht club you're going to has a dress code posted online. Most of them do, and the rules can vary from club to club. The Nantucket Yacht Club , for example, requires semi-formal attire for its dinners and cocktail attire including ties for men during its dinner dances and balls. The Hyannis Yacht Club goes into a little more detail. It accepts stylish casual wear including clean, neat jeans and shorts for lunch. For dinner, guests are expected to step it up by leaving the denim at home and wearing sports coats. Different areas of a club may also have different dress rules. Bars and outdoor decks tend to more lax and allow casual clothing.

Sometimes, the easiest way of narrowing down what to wear is to eliminate what you should not wear. This is just a partial list of how not to show up at any kind of yacht club unless you want to be denied admittance or receive a lot of disapproving glares. All rules listed apply to the inside of the club, and can vary for beach and dock rulings.

Flip Flops or Going Barefoot: This rule applies INSIDE the club, or for any meal time. Most people love the beach, but going barefoot is not only unacceptable, but unhygienic.

You'll want to wear appropriate footwear such as sturdy sandals or closed toe shoes. While a lot of children and adults love their flip-flops, they may be a little too casual for a yacht club atmosphere. The most popular choice here is a boat shoe style but a bridle bit driver is always appropriate - check the latest . The lightly worn leather and pencil-curled laces fit the bill in the cool department.

Torn, Stained, or Worn Clothing: Any attire that is showing signs of wear such as rips, stains that never came out, holes, missing buttons, etc. should be left at home.

Baseball Caps and Other Hats: Most yacht clubs prefer that men remove their caps when inside the venue. Save them for the sailing excursions.

Extra points on the water if you rock the Club’s Burgee on the hat!

Swimwear: Just a no-no. Save it for the boat and the beach. A cover-up can be acceptable for the patio.

Going Shirtless: Nope!

Undershirts as Shirts: See above. You may also want to be careful about choosing a t-shirt, particularly one with graphics, when visiting a yacht club. Most prefer that you wear a collared shirt, even if it's a casual one such as a polo shirt.

Tank tops for men and any tank tops for women that are skimpy and don't hide undergarments should be saved for another occasion.

Women have a lot of options when it comes to visiting a yacht club. Linen and cotton make the perfect summer blouses. A light but structured Sleeveless Top paired with a  sweater is perfect for warding off cool sea breezes when you're out on the deck. A polo or collared shirt works well for the yacht club scene as well. You can also consider a dressy blouse that has a little bit of flounce to it. Now that the time has approached for the annual cruise of this club, and its officers, members, &c., will be seen at the fashionable haunts of Newport, &c., we have obtained the description of uniform they are compelled to wear on such occasions, for the benefit of our readers. Frock Coat of navy blue cloth, faced with the same and lined with black silk serge; double-breasted, with two rows of large size yacht club buttons on the breast, nine in each row, placed four inches and a half apart from eye to eye, at top, and two and a half at bottom; rolling collar; skirts with one large button behind on each hip, and one near the bottom of each fold; cuffs to be closed, and from three to three and a half inches deep.

Pantaloons of navy blue cloth or white drill.

Vests of white drill, single-breasted, with standing collar or rolling collar to button nearly to the throat, with nine small buttons.

Neckerchief of black silk.

Caps -- Of navy blue cloth, not less than two and a half, nor more than three inches high, and top not more than half an inch greater diameter than base.

• The most appropriate clothes for men are loose pants, boating shorts , and jean shorts assorted with light shirts, or polo and a loose vest.

Night Party

In the evening, you can still wear casual clothes but a bit more dressy. The thin, soft, and flowy textile is more appropriate for night parties. Bring a light jacket with you. It gets cooler in the evening.

• Princess waist dresses, skirt with flounces, loose pants assorted with dressy tops are the perfect choices. A chic option will be to wear a color-coordinated wrap or a jacket. A long dress harmonized with a nice pair of chandelier earrings is a great option if you opt to dress chicly
• Here, again, avoid high heels. Flats and low-heeled sandals will be perfect and will suit any outfit.

• I will say it again, the best shoes to wear on a boat is Sperry, but hey, this is your party, you can pick any other type of boat shoes as long as they are non-marking.
• Girls, even if high heels elongate your legs and make you more attractive. It is preferable to avoid wearing them on a boat. Opt for boating shoes !
• Mosquitoes love humidity, especially in the late afternoon. You should bring a repellent with you. You Never know.
• Try to use only waterproof accessories
• The sun beat down during the day, bring sunscreen and wear long sleeves to protect you from the sun
• You can wear long dresses but not too long to avoid tripping.

You cannot wear high heels on a boat, there are few reasons to this. It is not comfortable, not safety and it can damage the deck:) You wouldn’t want this happen.

I have been on a yacht for a dinner party sailing in heels! It was a bit troublesome especially going up and down stairs.

Is this post geared toward Northeast US or somewhere else in the world? Here in Florida, it is absolutely okay to wear flip flops to a day yacht party as long as they aren’t cheap! Sperry’s or other boat shoes are acceptable at night for men if the rest of the outfit is semi-casual.

Yes, this article concerns everyone. No matter the country. Of course, you can wear flip flops , you can even go barefoot if you wish to, but the risk of hurting your feet or slipping on the deck is much higher. Most charter companies require wearing boat shoes because if something happens and someone didn’t follow the guideline, then the company or the owner of the boat will not be covered by their assurance.

However, Sperry’ shoes are the most recommended on boats as they are comfortable and stylish.

But, again, as long as it is non-marking shoes, you are good to go!

Khakis or similar slacks (ironed, of course) can take the place of jeans and are just about as comfortable. A polo shirt or plaid button-up will look good and align with yacht club standards. Accessorize with a leather belt and shoes.

Women's Clothes

Women should lean toward nice dresses which are classy and stylish, but not overly provocative; avoid cleavage-revealing, tight attire that would be more suited to a flashy nightspot than the proper environs of a yacht club. Women may also wear slacks with a nice top--perhaps a lightweight sweater in the spring or a collared, knit polo in the summer. Avoid sneakers and use a few accessories to tie the outfit together, like a silk scarf or a nice bracelet.

Children and Other Circumstances

Consult with a yacht club beforehand if bringing kids. Little ones are usually exempt from dress code rules, yet it's easy enough to put children into comfortable clothes just this side of dressy. Make sure children's clothes are clean, free of holes and stains and that their hair is well-groomed. For adults wanting to really dress down, check to see if the yacht club has a day for "porthole casual," during which jeans and tees are acceptable, but even then, make sure clothes are clean and well-fitted.

Just wondering if anyone can advise what the dress code is like in the Yacht Club on MSC

Does it follow the suggested dress code of the rest of the ship or does it have a separate dress code?

The dress code on all MSC ships is advisory and is published in the daily programme. The dress code is the same throughout the ship.

The YC is not a prison you are allowed to escape and mingle with "steerage". So no worries on the dress code. Do as you want

The dress code follows the rest of the ship, however on Formal Nights the people in YC tend to dress more formally (i.e. tux for men). I felt a bit underdressed the on our first cruise in YC so the next one I took evening wear with me. However this was on European and TA cruises, I suspect that on Divina out of Miami it may be more relaxed. I think evening wear is more of a European thing?? Even so, it's nice to dressed up for these occasions.

My experience in the YC on formal nights is somewhat different. We have sailed there three times and I haven't seen much difference in what men wear there compared to the rest of the ship. There were only a couple of tuxes, many suits and ties, some with suits and/sport jackets with open collared shirts and one or two men with jeans.

Yes, as I said, probably a more casual attitude on U.S. based cruises. Maybe the Divina should get it's own forum as it seems to differ from the other MSC ships???????:confused:

Not a bad idea. I would also like to see the Yacht Club get it's own forum. People's thoughts and reviews of the YC often differ greatly than those of the rest of the ship.

The dress in the Yacht Club whether on casual or gala evenings is no different from the rest of the ship. Jeans are fine on casual nights and suits or sport jackets the norm for the gala occasions. True formal wear is actually seen less in Yacht Club from what I saw on my two YC cruises.

Just got off the Divina this morning and I would second this post. On our Gala night's, the majority on men were in suits or sports jackets with a couple tux's and a couple of men wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

I realize I'm reactivating a year-old thread, but I didn't want to start a new one when much of this concern has been addressed. However, a part that doesn't seem to get much attention: What do women and men who book Yacht Club cabins/suites wear during the day while in the Yacht Club? For men, are dress shorts and golf shirts appropriate? Are dress shorts and t-shirts okay? I've seen a number of photos in which men are wearing slacks and button-down shirts. While I certainly don't want to stand out for under-dressing, I'd hate to make myself conspicuous by over-dressing. Plus, I'll be on vacation, so a break from a daytime suit-and-tie will be great!

Also, our cabin is 15021. How will we get up to The One pool deck? Is there an elevator, or will we be taking stairs from the Yacht Club? Is it okay to pass through the Club wearing swim trunks and a t-shirt on the way to the pool?

Really no different from the rest of the ship. Shorts and T shirts are fine for daytime.

From your cabin to the One Pool Deck is easy peasy, walk down the hall and just outside of the Concierge is the elevator up to One Pool (or down to the Spa). Only goes from Deck 14 to Deck 18 for Yacht Club passengers.

It's the same but you don't have to follow it.

DH wore sorts and t shirts during the day. If you are sailing from Miami the dress standard is considerably more casual, even in the evenings than on European sailings.

We have a 7-day cruise on the Seaside leaving next Saturday, 13 April 2019, and we're staying in the YC. I really don't want to pack anything formal (sport coats, ties, etc.) Is it really a necessity on a Caribbean cruise?  We can go to specialty restaurants on formal nights without formal attire I assume. The dress code would apply only to main dining rooms whether in YC on main part of ship. Correct me if I'm wrong. TIA

No, you do not need formal clothes in the YC or any place else for that matter. Based on my experience in the YC last December, I did not feel out of place wearing the same type of clothes any of seven nights. I did take a tie just encase we decided to get our picture taken. I wore it the last formal night, at least it did not take much room to pack.

Agree,,,, If you dress smart casual... you will blend right in with the majority of YC diners. On our cruise last year...we saw a man walk in on 2 different nights in shorts!!! So literally no dress code enforcement.

Shorts - really? The audacity of some people. I am truly mortified by the thought of seeing someone in shorts in a dining room.

Depends on the ship, the asst m'D and the itinerary - I've seen men turned away when wearing shorts.  DH was refused entry to TSL last year on Splendida when wearing shorts - it was only shortly after 6pm!

Beam...I'm sure this is more of a European /med cruise which tend to be more formal. Caribbean cruises you can pretty much dictate what you want to wear. . I have found this on all lines I've cruised stateside

Actually, it was a repositioning cruise where temperatures were hotter than average Caribbean ones.

I did advise that it  "depends on itinerary", in fairness, IC.

I'm not disagreeing.... Sadly it is under control of the cruiseline..but most dining room staff tend to ignore and not enforce questionable attire.

On our recent Caribbean in Preziosa YC we were very surprised at the formality of dinner dressing on both Elegant nights. Many, probably about 25%, men wore Tuxedos and another 25% were in suits. Most of the remainder, like me, wore long sleeve shirts with dress trousers. The ladies, as ever, at least complemented their partners in level of dressing and often exceeded. Not a single guest in the YC restaurant 'dressed down' on any night....by that I mean the minimum was a collared short sleeve shirt, and chinos or equivalent.

OK, it wasn't 'stateside' as such because the cruise commenced and ended in Barbados and remained in the Caribbean throughout. The mix of passengers was largely European, many British (500 passengers) and a smaller number of Americans.

We were just on and the norm was slacks and shirt for men and dress or slacks for women.  Fancy nights people spruced it up a bit.  Saw one tux and the guy was cranked with pictures of people in shorts at dinner.  Imo shorts not appropriate but I'm not going to get cranked about it.  I was just happy Octomom wasn't on letting her kids run around dining room during dinner.

Devon Yacht Club Traditions

For many events and dinners, guests of members are welcome at the Devon Yacht Club.  Members are responsible for ensuring that their families and guests observe the following traditions:

Flag Ceremony

The daily raising and lowering of the American flag is a time-honored tradition at the Devon Yacht Club and we invite all members and their guests to join us in this ceremony each evening.  At the sound of the bell, please stand. Upon firing of the cannon all non-uniformed citizens should place their right hand over their heart and hold the salute until the flag is unsnapped from the halyard. Please remain at attention until dismissed.

Smoking is not permitted on Club premises.

Cell Phones and Electronic Devices

While on Club grounds, cell phones, iPads, tablets and laptops are required to be on silent or vibrate at ALL times. Telephone conversations or electronic messaging are prohibited on club property other than in the parking areas.

No pets are permitted in or on any Club property.

Except as specifically stated on invitations for special events, the dress code in the Club House/Dining Room/Bar is as follows:

• On all days until 6:30 PM and on Tuesdays after 6:30 PM informal attire is acceptable. Shoes are required at all times. Blue denim jeans, overly casual attire, swimming or beach attire are not permitted at any time.  
• After 6:30 PM, on Thursdays, coats and ties are required for men and boys over 5 years of age.  
• After 6:30 PM, on all other evenings, coats and dress shirts are required for men and boys over 5 years of age. Ties are recommended on these evenings.

Overly revealing swimsuits such as string bikinis are prohibited. Children should wear bathing suits at all times regardless of age. Changing of diapers is not permitted.

Informal dress and bathing suits are acceptable until 6:30 p.m.

Players dress in tennis attire with 80% of their costume white. Gentlemen are required to wear shirts with collars. Players and non-players should dress in good taste.

Map & Directions

• Take Long Island Expressway (Rt. 495) East to Exit 70/Manorville, Rt. 111.
• Follow to the end and proceed East on Rt. 27 toward Montauk.
• Take the Montauk Highway (Rt. 27) East, traveling through Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Hampton and then entering Amagansett.
• After the flagpole in town, there is a railroad station behind a tall hedge on the left.
• Go left on Abrahams Landing Road and continue across the railroad tracks.
• After passing the tracks, continue straight (not left) and proceed two miles to the end of the road. The Club entrance is on the right.
• Once in Port Jefferson follow Route 25A out of town to junction Route 112.
• Take Route 112 South to Long Island Expressway (Route 495) East.
• See directions From New York City above. 
• Once in Orient Point follow Route 25 to Greenport.
• In Greenport look for signs for Shelter Island Ferry.
• On Shelter Island follow Route 114 South to the South Ferry to North Haven.
• Both the North and South Ferries run approximately every 15 minutes and do not require reservations. Once in North Haven follow Route 114 South through North Haven and Sag Harbor to East Hampton. In East Hampton turn left on Route 27 East (Montauk Highway).
• See direction From New York City above. 

All inquiries concerning membership must be made through a current member of the Club. If you are an avid sailor, please contact our Fleet Captain to learn about opportunities to crew.  

Reciprocity

Devon welcomes guests accompanied by our members as well as members of reciprocal clubs. For members of reciprocal clubs, please contact our office in advance for reservations and any questions. If you are a member of a yacht club that does not currently have reciprocity, please contract our General Manager for further information.

We are pleased to have you visit Larchmont Yacht Club.  Moorings are available to guests of Club members and to members of recognized yacht clubs.  During your stay, we hope you will enjoy our facilities and community.   This guide will provide general information about our facility, procedures for guests, and services you may need.  Please ask at the Front Desk if you have other questions.Larchmont Yacht Club was founded in 1880 and is one of the oldest yacht clubs in the United States.  We are an active, year-round family club featuring cruising, one-design and frostbite sailing along with swimming, tennis and paddle.  Our adult and junior programs are the largest member-only programs on Long Island Sound.  The Club has been housed in this beautiful building since 1888.Since 1896, the Club has hosted Larchmont Race Week, one of the oldest race weeks in the United States run by a single club.   The sailing roster in 1896 included names such as Vanderbilt, Morgan, and Belmont, whose yachts were well over 100 feet long.  It is one of the few race weeks with starts for PHRF cruising boats, one-design sloops, and junior sailors, all under the same event banner. THE USE OF CLUB FACILITIES AND MOORINGS IS AT YOUR OWN RISK. LARCHMONT YACHT CLUB ASSUMES NO LIABILITY FOR USE OF ITS FACILITIES.

CLUBHOUSE RULES:

Guests are invited to use the Club’s house facilities. Upon registering at the Front Desk and presenting a guest mooring receipt,  arrangements  for  payment of   bar  and  meal  charges  can  be  made. The Club accepts   major credit cards.  Guests may purchase ticket books to use at the bar and Beach Grill.Registered guests occupying guest rooms or guest moorings may use the pool by paying the appropriate additional facilities fees. The fee schedule for such facilities uses is available at the Front Desk of the Club. CELL PHONES AND LAPTOP COMPUTERS  may not be used in the Clubhouse. COLORS  are observed at sunset by standing in silence as the ensign and flags are lowered. Persons inside the Clubhouse need not stand.DRESS in the Clubhouse and on the grounds is “smart casual”. Bathing suits, bare feet and tank tops are not permitted. FOOD SERVICE:  Reservations for Clubhouse din­ing must be made at the Front Desk. ICE:  Ask at the front desk. SHOWERS  are available at the Pool House, as are temporary lockers. The downstairs day lockers were designed specifically for adults. Children under the age of 18 are not allowed in the day lockers but may use showers on the upstairs level. Bring your own locks, towels and personal supplies.

WATERFRONT FACILITIES RULES:

COMMUNICATION:  For radio communication within the harbor, use low power VHF channel 72. EMERGENCY:  Dial 911 for police, fire and ambulance.  Emergency medical services are available 24 hours a day at Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital, New Rochelle, New York (632-5000).  For less-critical health concerns, MDxpress at 1030 Boston Post Road, Mamaroneck (777-2273) keeps extended office hours seven days a week. LAUNCH SERVICE:  VHF Channel 72 is used to hail a launch.  Proper attire including appropriate footwear is required.  Bathing suits and tank  tops are not considered appropriate attire.  Children 13 and under must wear life jackets on launches and docks.  Smoking or consuming beverages on board the launches is prohibited.  The schedule is posted at the main dock. MOORINGS:  You will be moored on a guest mooring or a club member’s mooring.  When you first come ashore, ask the launch driver to register you at the Dock  House and provide you with a mooring receipt.  Arrangements for payment are made at the Front Desk.  Guest mooring fees are $45 per night.  Unless you have made prior arrangements, check-out time is 11:00 AM. WORK DOCK:  Located at the end of the drysail pier. Tie-up time is limited to 30 minutes when other boats are waiting. FUEL: Currently unavailable. PUMP OUT:  Pump out  for  holding  tanks  is available at no charge.  Operating instructions are on the unit.  This pump is to be used for holding tanks only. WATER:  Larchmont’s water comes from New York City Reservoir system, rated the best tasting water in America. TRASH/RECYCLING:  Trash receptacles and recycling bins are located at the head of the drysail pier and in the rear of the Pandemonium.

GENERAL DRESS CODE:

Members are responsible for their own, their children, and their guests’ compliance with the Club Dress Code. Hats, caps, visors, or beanies may not be worn indoors except ladies’ formal dress hats or religious head coverings. Torn, ragged, frayed, dirty, or indecently revealing clothing, or clothing with obscene or offensive imagery or writing is prohibited everywhere on Club grounds. Footwear must be worn at all times outside the pool area including on all lawns, roadways, sidewalks, parking areas, launches, and docks.

FORMAL DINING ROOM DRESS CODE:

The Schaefer Room, Club Room, Quarterdeck and, during special events, the Veranda, are the formal dining rooms of the clubhouse.  The required dress code for the clubhouse’s formal dining rooms is “smart casual,” meaning collared shirts, turtlenecks, slacks and tasteful shorts for gentlemen, and blouses, dresses, skirts, shorts, and slacks, including dress denim for ladies. Gentlemen and boys are not permitted to wear denim or jeans in the formal dining rooms. During the period between the Annual Meeting and Commissioning Day, gentlemen and boys are required to wear jackets at Sunday Brunch and on Friday and Saturday evenings in the formal dining rooms. 

DRESS CODE OUTSIDE FORMAL DINING ROOMS:

While “smart casual” dress is encouraged in all areas of the clubhouse, all Members are permitted to wear sailing, tennis attire, and dress denim in the Tap Room, Founders’ Porch, Main Bar, and Pandemonium. Tank tops, pajamas, bathing attire, and bathing cover-ups are not permitted to be worn in the clubhouse.

POOL DRESS CODE:

Bare feet, bathing suits, rash guards, and beach coverups are strictly limited to the Pool and Pool dining areas, and are not permitted to be worn when entering or exiting the pool area.  Indecently revealing clothing or bathing suits are prohibited.  After 5:00 p.m., a shirt or coverup is required for anyone over the age of 16 at any pool dining areas or for any service at the Tiki Bar.  More formal dress may be prescribed by the House Committee for specific dining areas or events within the Pool area.  Caregivers must be dressed in appropriate bathing attire suitable for attending to children in the water.

TENNIS DRESS CODE:

Except for Camp Seagull participants, tennis whites (90% white) must be worn at all times.  Men over the age of 16 are required to wear collared shirts.  Shoes should be predominantly white and suitable for soft courts.  No running shoes or cross trainers are allowed.  Warm-up suits or hats may be colored.

The purpose of the dress code is to ensure a welcoming and respectful atmosphere for Club members.  The staff is here to answer any questions about the dress code and has the authority to address violations listed below.

Footwear (Men and Women):

All players using the tennis courts must wear proper attire during the outdoor tennis season. The outdoor tennis season is defined from when the tennis courts are opened in the spring to when they are closed in the fall. Appropriate tennis attire for men means tennis shirts (including tennis crew neck shirts) and tennis shorts/pants. Tee shirts are not acceptable. Appropriate tennis attire for women means tennis shirts, tennis dresses, skirts, pants and/or shorts. Tee shirts are not acceptable. All junior players 17 years of age or younger will be expected to wear appropriate tennis attire as specified above including acceptable logoed tennis tee shirts. All players must wear tennis socks and flat-bottomed tennis shoes at all times when on the tennis courts. The tennis professional will use his/her discretion in determining appropriate shoe attire. Running shoes, cross-trainers, hiking shoes and sandals/flipflops are not permitted on the tennis courts. All running, Bermuda, cargo shorts, jeans, exercise or sweat shorts are not acceptable for adults or juniors on the tennis courts. The tennis professional's interpretation of the rules shall prevail.

General Rules:

• All dress on Club premises must be neat and clean.
• The Dress Code applies to guests and transient boaters.
• Members are responsible for informing their guests of the Dress Code.
• Appropriate shirts/cover-ups and shoes are required in the Clubhouse and on the outdoor Patio or Terrace.
• Bathing attire for men or women is not permitted in the Clubhouse or on the outdoor Patio or Terrace.
• Hats: Men may not wear hats in the Clubhouse, but may wear hats on the outdoor Patio or Terrace. Hats shall not be worn backwards on Club premises.
• Collarless Shirts are not permitted in the Clubhouse (unless covered by a collared jacket/layer); however, appropriate tennis crew neck shirts and yachting tops may be worn on the outdoor Patio or Terrace.

Special Rules by Dining Area:

Definitions:.

• FORMAL Men: Black tie (tuxedos) Women: Appropriate formal evening attire
• INFORMAL Men: Jackets and ties Women: Comparable attire
• CASUAL Men: Collared shirts and slacks
• SPORTS ATTIRE Men: Appropriate golf or tennis attire Women: Comparable attire

Main Dining Room and Ballroom (Downstairs):

• FORMAL and INFORMAL: always permitted
• INFORMAL: permitted on Saturday evening
• CASUAL: permitted Sunday through Friday
• Jeans: not permitted anytime

Grille Room (downstairs) and Marine Lounge (upstairs):

The General Manager, Management staff and Department Heads shall have the authority to address Dress Code violations as follows: 1st time violations: issue a verbal warning 2nd violation: place a letter in the member’s file 3rd or more violation: ask the member to leave the premises until properly attired
