New Zealand yacht charter

New Zealand is a destination with rugged, untamed beauty. Located on the southwestern Pacific Ocean, it is home to world-class wineries, rich heritage, and a people whose love for the water is ingrained in their DNA. With more boats per capita than any other country in the world, New Zealand is a yacht charter haven.

How much to charter a yacht in New Zealand?

You can find a myriad of yacht charter options in New Zealand, from catamarans for full-day yacht charter itineraries to superyachts that can accommodate a group of 30 for a one-week liveaboard; New Zealand won't disappoint. With different price points depending on many factors, a catamaran with five cabins and 138 feet in length can cost around $107,000 for a full week's rent. On the other hand, a sailing yacht with 5 cabins and a length of 170 feet can cost around $193,000 per week. And lastly, for a motor yacht that's 197 feet in length, a week's charter can cost around $375,000.

What are the most popular yacht holidays in New Zealand?

New Zealand is blessed with so much natural beauty and a beautiful coastline that spending time outdoors is but a natural habit for locals. One of the country's favorite pastimes is sailing, with hundreds of islands to explore, and coastline towns and cities that offer undeniable beauty and adventure. New Zealand's top yacht charter destinations are divided into two: the North and the South Island.

Let's begin with the North Island's top spots: the Bay of Islands and the capital city of Auckland. The Bay of Islands is recognized to be the top yacht charter destination in the country. With over 140 islands to explore, this North Island spot is teeming with adventure and relaxation at the same time. A maritime playground, the waters are rich in marine life, with dolphins swimming beside boats as they cruise through the waters being a common sight. There are also glorious beaches around the islands, rich history, and plenty of diving opportunities, snorkeling, or simply relaxing on the boat as you cruise from one island to the next.

Auckland, the capital city of New Zealand, is also known as the "City of Sails." This world-class sailing destination is the location for many competitive sailing races, including the famous America's Cup. The city is also known as the jumping-off point to the famed Hauraki Gulf, which features over 500 sheltered anchorages, beaches, fishing spots, and islands with plenty to offer the most discerning traveler. Auckland is also the jumping-off point to Waiheke's island, famous for its wineries and art scene, as well as the Motuihe Channel, known for its excellent fishing grounds.

The South Island of New Zealand offers more rugged landscapes, more exciting adventures, and more activities. Abel Tasman, located at the very tip of South Island, offers crystal clear waters and golden sand beaches. It is also a National Park, which means its coastal paradise is virtually untouched, with fascinating geography and beautiful scenery. The Tonga Island Marine Reserve is also found here, a protected underwater environment perfect for snorkeling and diving.

And lastly, Marlborough Sounds is yet another one of New Zealand's most famous yacht charter destinations. One of the most incredible locations in the South Island, you can find sheltered bays and views of forested mountains from the water. With golden beaches, untouched natural scenery, and plenty of islands to explore, the Marlborough Sounds is a definite South Island visit.

Where to go on a luxury yacht charter in New Zealand?

Auckland is the top spot for luxury yacht charters in New Zealand, simply because the city is the capital and offers high-end shopping, a bustling nightlife, and marinas that provide world-class berths and amenities. The Silo Marina and the Westhaven Marina, located in Auckland, are two of the top marinas in New Zealand, offering hundreds of berths and luxury amenities.

The Bay of Islands is another top luxury yacht charter destination for being the country's yachting center. With marinas that offer excellent amenities and facilities and hundreds of safe anchorages, this destination truly creates one of the best luxury yacht holidays in the Southern Hemisphere.

And the last on our list is Whangarei Harbour, home to countless marinas and only 2 hours away from Auckland. The marinas are near the city's CBD, restaurants, resorts, and the Harbor itself offers excellent diving, game fishing, and famous cruising grounds. The area is also home to lakes, rivers, and swimming with dolphins are but a regular thing.

New Zealand is a beautiful South Pacific Island with so much to offer in yacht charter excursions. With islands to the north and the south, take your pick from a relaxing yacht charter adventure or an adventure-packed expedition with scuba diving, kite surfing, cliff jumping, and even bungee jumping added to your yacht charter itinerary.

New Zealand Yacht Charters

Private yacht cruising in a south pacific land of fire and ice.

In my past life as yacht crew and now as a yachting journalist, people often ask me where my favourite yachting destinations are.

They expect to h ear the usual suspects, I think. Perhaps the Amalfi Coast, with its bougainvillea terraces and dizzying clifftop views, the French Riviera’s heady combination of Michelin star dining and pine-scented coves, or the exotic French-Caribbean beauty of St Barts.

Undeniably lovely and glamorous as all those places are, it’s the wild places—the ones where superyachts are dwarfed against a primal landscape—that have my heart. Remote cruising fills me with endless wonder, and if I don’t see a single other superyacht in my travels, then so much the better.

Cruising New Zealand is like that. In this pristine country at the bottom of the world, superyachts are still a rare enough sight that their visit will be documented in the local paper, and locals will come down to the shore to see them pass.

Emerald mountains rising from the glassy waters of New Zealand, a site to behold on your New Zealnd yacht charter

It’s changing of course, with the Viaduct marina in Auckland welcoming more luxury yachts by the year, but every mile you travel further from of the yachting centres, the more the world falls away and you are on a breath-taking adventure deep in the South Pacific, in an emerald country carved by ice and fire.

Cruising in New Zealand is a story in three parts: a ‘choose your own adventure’ kind of experience, where the north of the island is astonishingly different in scenery and character from the south, with something of both to be had in the middle. I was lucky enough to have over a month cruising on a yacht there, but for those charterers limited to a week or 10-day trip will, rather sadly, have to make your choice of the three.

To the North! South Pacific Beauty: Auckland, the Bay of Islands and Coromandel

New Zealand, ‘the land of the long white cloud’, is a long, thin country made up of two islands, one above the other, anchored deep in the South Pacific.

Its north, roughly at the same latitude as Sydney, Australia, has more than a hint of the idyllic South Pacific about it—turquoise waters, white sand beaches, the odd palm tree between the pines. Only the seals and penguins flitting through the water next to the yacht let you know that Antarctica is the next landmass to the south, and that swimming is therefore strictly a summer activity.

waves crashing on a New Zealand beach.

Our North Island charter started off in the Viaduct, Auckland’s famous port where the America’s Cup base their fleet, and where fashionable restaurants and bars show off Auckland’s impressive gourmet scene along the waterfront. However, our yacht’s owner was the adventurous type so we didn’t tarry here long, quickly making our way out of the busy harbour and up to the Bay of Islands.

When you see the Bay of Islands, you’ll immediately understand why the Kiwis have more boats per capita than any other country on earth. This gentle archipelago of rolling hills and blue-green coves makes for spectacular cruising, with hundreds of protected anchorages and quaint colonial villages.

The water up here glows sapphire and jade in the shallows, and white sand beaches are backed by sub-tropical forest, sparkling waterfalls, and vineyards that stretch down to the sea. Far offshore, Poor Knights Island offers one of the top 10 dive sites on earth, with the world’s largest sea cave and 100m undersea cliffs, and the waters in the region are so rich in life that anyone can become a prize fisherman merely by dangling a line off the aft deck.

Our yacht spent a week floating through this earthly paradise and down through the Hauraki Gulf to the Coromandel, where hiking paths weave through towering Kauri forest and volcanic hot springs well up on soft sand beaches. On our way southwards, we passed an island volcano which gently puffed white smoke into the sky to blend with the passing clouds. The North Island of New Zealand is truly a marvellous place.

Smoke rising from a volcanic crater

Yet to be honest, this was not the New Zealand I had come to see. I had watched Lord of the Rings. The Bay of Islands and Hauraki Gulf are truly beautiful, but I wanted film-set, heart-in-your-mouth kind of grandeur—all fiords and glaciers and snow-capped mountains— and would settle for nothing less. But our trip was far from finished, and I would get more than I could have possibly bargained for as we moved further south.

In the Middle! Wineries and Dolphins: Cruising the Marlborough Sounds

I woke up, looked out my porthole and smiled. I could see mountains. The water shone like golden sheet metal in the morning sun, the yacht’s wake sending out ripples in the glassy surface.

We had arrived in the Marlborough Sounds, a vast flooded river valley network that stretches across the top of the South Island. I went out on deck with a mug of coffee, the air was a shade cooler than in the far north, but a fine, sunny day was on its way.

The black fin of a dolphin broke the mirror-still surface, then another and another, until the yacht was surrounded with a resident pod of bottlenose dolphins. I’m not sure how long you need to spend at sea to stop being excited when you see dolphins, but even after years living on boats, spotting dolphins playing in the bow wave still makes me grin like a child. We saw the dolphins many times on our days floating through the Marlborough Sounds, and saw people swimming with them from the few other boats we saw in this quiet, splendid place.

The Marlborough Sounds are heaven for the nature lover. Lush green mountains fall away into the protected sounds where killer whales come to hunt in tranquil bays, and emerald islands are scattered like jewels through the blue.

new zealand yachtsman

Hiking and mountain bike paths lead away from aquamarine coves and sandy beaches, and the deep, cool waters hide many diving treasures, including a sunken cruise ship. The Marlborough Sounds are world-famous for their wineries, and our guests got off the boat often, for wine-tastings and bushwalks and afternoons exploring historic whaling towns. They’d return to the yacht for candlelit dinners on deck, happily chatting about everything they’d seen, and the next morning we’d cruise to another spectacular anchorage for another day of adventure.

It was pristine cruising, wild and pure. Still, the rugged south was calling.

To the South! Snow-capped Splendour and Penguins: Floating through the Fiordlands

Working on a superyacht is an unusual life, full of strange sights and interesting people. But there are moments that stand out in the memory, and our cruise down the Western Coast of New Zealand is one of them.

I went out on deck at sunset, and the world was lit up like fire. The Southern Alps reared up mighty above the sea, their snow-capped peaks burnished red and gold by the setting sun. It was staggering. I stayed until it got dark and cold, the wind whipping across the moonlit water as we moved further south. As I went to sleep, the boat pitching slightly beneath me, I could only imagine how incongruous the yacht must have looked, a 50m superyacht reduced to a white speck in the dark sea against a towering backdrop of moonlit mountains.

The next morning, the captain came to me, showing me the printout of the depth sounder reading from overnight. ‘What do you see?’ he asked, smiling. I couldn’t quite believe the shape I could see sketched in the readings. ‘Is that a…’ I stopped and looked at him, wondering if this was some kind of trick.

‘Whale? Yep, blue whale. Biggest creature on earth. We passed over it in the night.’

That day, as we continued to make our slow way down the west coast, I saw more marine life than I had ever seen from a yacht, or perhaps will ever see again. It was as if we were in our own David Attenborough nature documentary. Dolphins surrounded the yacht—50 or more at a time. Colonies of walrus seals sat floating in the water on their backs, heads up watching us as we passed, looking for all the world like they were sitting in armchairs in front of the television, their big bellies protruding from the water like that uncle who loves beer and football in equal measure.

Sea Lion yawns on the beaches of New Zealand

‘A killer whale!’ One of the deckhands shouted, pointing to where a huge fin appeared in the distance, then vanished. All around, seabirds flocked and dove for fish in the teeming waters. The crew threw a line off the back of the yacht as we cruised slowly down the staggering coast, and the chef cooked up the freshest fish in the world for dinner that night.

We left the open sea and entered the fiordlands, where the great white yacht powered up deep, crystal clear gorges carved by ancient glaciers. Tiny fiord penguins swum alongside the yacht, and fat seals sat basking on rocks, their grey-black fur gleaming slickly in the sun. I stood watching for a while, pointing out the seals to the yacht’s engineer who was passing. ‘Rats of the sea’ he said, unimpressed. But then, engineers were born grumpy.

It was much cooler down here in the fiords: the distant peaks were clad in snow, and mist hovered over the water in the mornings, dripping down from the temperate rainforest. The sound of rushing water was everywhere, snow-melt streams of milky ice blue gushed into the fiords from mountain streams, and waterfalls plunged from the cliffs, filling the air with rainbows and shimmering drops of white. The captain manoeuvred the yacht’s bow up to a waterfall running off a glacier, and I filled my glass with icy cold water that had been captured in the glacier for at least 10,000 years.

New Zealand Fiordland National Park is immense, with fiords riddled into the mountainous coastline like long, creeping fingers. Our yacht cruised up quiet inlets of startling beauty, where seals played under waterfalls and green vegetation somehow finds life on sheer cliff walls that are slick with running water.

The guests spent their time bushwalking and kayaking along glassy fjords under mossy, towering rock faces, although they shied away from scuba diving in the cold, crystal clear waters down here near the bottom of the world. Mostly, they dined and read and played card games on deck, as some of the most spectacular scenery on earth floated by. Time slowed, as we cruised ever southwards through the Milford, Dusky, and Doubtful Sounds, until we reached the southern tip of New Zealand.

Emerging from the fiordlands, we cruised around the bottom of the country to pretty Dunedin, an old Scottish city of stone colonial mansions, grand gardens, and high teas. Built in the gold rush, Dunedin has some of the finest Edwardian and Victorian architecture in the Southern Hemisphere, set in a rolling landscape of hills and cliff-lined bays.

Which was all very lovely, but my heart was left on the wild west coast, where I felt I had fallen headlong into a National Geographic photo shoot, and my eyes could never take it all in.

Choose your Own Adventure with a New Zealand Luxury Yacht Charter

So, which adventure would you choose on a New Zealand yacht charter? North, Middle, or South? The gentle South Pacific archipelago of the Bay of Islands, spectacular wine and bushwalking country in the Marlborough Sounds, or a land of ice and fire in the fiords?

Perhaps all three?

New Zealand

Possessing an intense beauty mirrored in tranquil mountains and raging rivers, New Zealand is one of the most breathtakingly scenic yachting destinations in the southern hemisphere. Mesmerizing glaciers, bubbling mud pools and soft golden beaches are all there to be discovered alongside one of the world’s premier wine and food scenes.

The cruising grounds of New Zealand are split into the North and South Islands; varying in landscape and atmosphere but united in a pure sense of natural wonderment. The south is the most scenic and mountainous of the two, with a breathtaking range of jagged Alps running the length of the island. The north is somewhat of a quieter and more relaxed holiday destination with a strong yachting history.

Auckland The picturesque city of Auckland is famous for its exceptional international sailing connections, hosting a collection of first class regattas and superb marinas. The ‘City of Sails’ is the enchanting base for sailing the Hauraki Gulf and the Coromandel Peninsula, two equally captivating cruising grounds in their own right.

Hauraki Gulf and The Coromandel The Hauraki Gulf is an island-sprinkled, smooth-water paradise boasting gorgeous landscapes swathed in scarlet flowers, glowing beaches, sprawling vineyards and seaside villages that are a delight to explore. The Coromandel is dotted with sublime beaches and hidden bays that make for perfect anchorage points.

The Bay of Islands Further north, The Bay of Islands is traditionally New Zealand’s yachting centre, boasting an extraordinary protected bay and hundreds of secluded islands offering the perfect secluded escape. Characterised by unbelievably green hills rolling down onto silky soft sands, the cool waters are simply bursting with incredible marine life, where marlin, dolphins and seals can be seen right from the deck.

Marlborough Sounds For a more peaceful and secluded twist, head to one of New Zealand’s most internationally renowned areas in Marlborough Sounds. An absolute yachting heaven, the exquisite waters of Marlborough are equally matched by their onshore delights, boasting sheltered bays, glistening beaches, hidden caves and exhilarating bushwalks. World-renowned for its exquisite wines, the region is the perfect place to sample some of the world’s best Sauvignon Blanc.

Fiordland Words can not do justice to the natural wonder that awaits in the Fiordland on New Zealand’s remote south-west coast. Nothing short of spectacular, ethereal landscapes rise up majestically from the strikingly calm waters; a flowing combination of snow-capped mountains, rolling hills, tumbling waterfalls and fascinating wildlife.

Queenstown Onshore, there are endless outdoor pursuits on offer, from cycling and canoeing to walking and four-wheel driving. Inland on the South Island is the famous adventure capital of Queenstown, offering a dizzying range of unique and off-beat activities to satisfy even the most hardened thrill-seeker.

Auckland Sailing: 9 Ways to Get Out on the Water

Auckland sailing shot from the deck looking out forward

Auckland sailing. There is nothing quite like that moment of silence after we left the marina, raised the sails, and turned off the engine. Pure paradise.

On any day, Aucklanders can look out at the Hauraki Gulf, and chances are good there will be plenty of sails, cruisers, and even a few superyachts in our sightline.

And, if it’s the weekend or summer twilight, we can spot yacht racing in Auckland.

New Zealand’s largest city is monikered the “City of Sails” for a good reason. And it doesn’t take much, especially on a sunny summer day, to see why. Whether it’s recreational boating, casual racing, or special events, it’s always a thrill.

Remembering back to when we first came to New Zealand, I just wanted to get out on the water to participate in some of this Auckland sailing I watched out my window every decent weather day.

I made this list for anyone like my former self. For me, on that day when I couldn’t figure out how to get out on the water. Now, Auckland sailing is in my soul. It captivates me, and it keeps me happy. I hope the same for you.

The list is also for visitors, while some of the choices get you out on a regular basis, most are fabulous opportunities to book when you want to go.

It doesn’t really matter how you do it, just get out there. Choose the options that are best for you. After all, everyone in Auckland needs to get out on Waitemata Harbour at least once.

At the bottom of the page, we highlight some of the best local yacht racing for those who prefer to enjoy their Auckland sailing from the shore.

As American expats who have been living in and exploring NZ for over 20 years, we see things from both a local’s perspective and from that of a visitor. Therefore, we understand what it’s like to come here and have things be similar, but not always exactly what we are used to. We share the information on this page from this perspective.

Auckland sailing: 9 ways to get out on the water

Join your local yacht club and get involved in racing, sail on one of the heritage ships at the maritime museum.

  • Take a day cruise
  • Add a touch of romance with a sunset dinner cruise
  • Friday afternoon rum racing
  • Ride a ferry out to one of the islands
  • Experience America’s Cup racing yacht

Find a friend who owns a yacht

  • Join the coastguard

There are more than 20 local yacht clubs in the Auckland area (and 108 across the country ).

Each club offers some sort of yacht racing for its members, and some occasionally welcome guests. Importantly, every racing team needs a crew.

This is how we got started in Auckland sailing before we bought our yacht. Jeff and I crewed together on a mixed team, and I crewed on a women’s team.

By the time we got our yacht, we already belonged to a local club that offers winter afternoon racing, summer Wednesday twilight racing, and summer weekend cruising races out to one of the local islands.

Here are shots from race night:

Twilight Racing on the Huraki Gulf in New Zealand

The Ted Ashby is a replica ketch-rigged deck scow that takes out passengers for a 1-hour sail from the New Zealand Maritime Museum . Guests can sit back and relax or help hoist the sails. Either way, we loved the experience and the classic views of the city.

This Auckland sailing opportunity is an additional fee for everyone over the museum entry, even for Auckland residents (who enter the museum without a fee).

Take a harbour day cruise or add a touch of romance with a sunset dinner cruise

Joining a charter cruise is one of the easiest ways to enjoy Auckland sailing. And you can do this day or evening.

  • Day cruise Sit back and relax or engage with the crew and participate in the sailing, the choice is yours as you enjoy 90 minutes sailing out in the Waitemata Harbour. Commentary will help you identify some of the city’s iconic sights. Refreshments are included. Check for discounts and reserve your harbour sail here
  • Sunset dinner cruise This adventure kicks off with a welcome drink on the deck. Then, sail off into the sunset with the stunning Auckland skyline as your backdrop. Dinner (ordered in advance) is provided by a top Auckland restaurant that can cater to most dietary requirements. Watch the sunset from the deck, learn a bit of the history of your surroundings, and enjoy your evening. Check for discounts and reserve your sunset dinner cruise here

Friday afternoon rum racing (first prize is a bottle of rum)

Honestly, if you are a yachting fan or just a New Zealander, you will instantly know that Friday afternoon rum racing is one of the best Auckland sailing opportunities.

In fact, it’s your chance to enter the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s Rum Races. (Note that the name refers to the first prize, there is no alcohol involved in this activity.)

However, the best part (to me) is that you race on either Lion New Zealand or Steinlager 2. Both are yachts sailed to impressive victory by Sir Peter Blake, New Zealand’s greatest yachtsman and impressive environmentalist.

New Zealand’s Sir Peter Blake skippered Steinlager 2 to an unprecedented victory in the Whitbread Round the World race (1989/90). It’s the only boat to ever win all six legs on both handicap and line honours. Lion New Zealand earned line honours at the Sydney to Hobart race (1984) and second place in the Whitbread Round the World (1985/86)

No experience is needed, although a moderate level of fitness is required. Sailing alongside an experienced crew, you get hands-on opportunities in 2-3 short (hour-long) social races against other yachts.

Check for discounts and reserve your rum racing afternoon here

Ride a ferry out to one of the islands of Hauraki Gulf

Ferries run from Auckland out to several of the Hauraki Gulf islands every day. Some are used by commuters, others by visitors. They are a great way to get out on the water with the added bonus of an adventure on one of the islands before taking a return ferry back to Auckland.

Some of our favourite island adventures include:

  • Waiheke Island Spend a day wine tasting at the beach or just relaxing in this sub-tropical paradise. Waiheke has it all. It’s a great weekend destination and even better if you have a week. Best of all, depending on the day you choose, there are great discounts out there for the walk-on ferry and even for the car ferry. Reserve a seat on the ferry to Waiheke Island or reserve a seat and your car on a ferry to Waiheke
  • Rangitoto Island Climb to the summit of Auckland’s youngest volcano and discover lava caves, a massive pohutukawa forest, and impressive views. Check for discounts and reserve your ferry ticket to Rangititio Island here
  • Kawau Island (ferry from Sandspit) This one follows the longest mail run by watercraft in the Southern Hemisphere. Once on Kawau check out some of the historic sites like the mansion house, go for a hike, discover a Māori Pa, and explore the old copper smelter. Check for discounts and reserve your Kawau Island ferry here
  • Rotoroa Island An interesting historical island, it was the longtime home to the Salvation Army’s addiction treatment centre. There is plenty of hiking options, a wildlife sanctuary, and sandy beaches. Bring a picnic lunch, have a swim, and enjoy your day. Reserve your tickets to Rotoroa Island here

Several ferries either coming in or going out at the Auckland ferry terminal

Experience America’s Cup racing yachts

One of the most unique ways to enjoy some Auckland sailing is a two-hour adventure onboard a former America’s Cup yacht.

Guests have the opportunity to participate in the thrills of sailing in a proper racing yacht. Take the helm, grinders, or lines as the boat races along the Waitemata Harbour in the same waters that hosted America’s Cup races in 2000, 2003, and 2021.

No sailing experience is required to participate, and if you don’t want to participate, simply sit back and enjoy the journey as the yachts sail past the city landscape.

Check for discounts and join an America’s Cup Sailing Tour in Auckland here

Yachting in New Zealand - Princess Kate racing against Prince William race against each other on former America's Cup boats.

Royals raced in 2014

Princess Kate raced alongside Dean Barker while Prince William was with Grant Dalton. The friendly race resulted in a 2:0 win for the princess, breaking Dean Barkers’ losing steak.

Grant Dalton eloquently explained away his loss to the media, “ We were just following the protocol handed down from the palace a couple of days ago that the princess had to win .”

Royals Racing in Auckland

If it’s true that one in four Aucklanders has a boat, then this should be easy. However, in practice, it’s not always as easy as it sounds.

Join the Coastguard

The Royal New Zealand Coastguard is a volunteer organization with the vision “ No boaties’ lives lost at sea “. Over 2,000 volunteers participate in bringing people home safely from disasters at sea as well as safety education and training.

While just wanting to get out on the water isn’t a great reason to join the Coastguard, if you are passionate about being out on the water and want to help others, it just may be the right opportunity for you.

If you are interested in discovering what you can do or getting more information on volunteering, head to the Coastguard’s volunteer information page .

Watch Auckland sailing: major yacht racing events in Auckland

Auckland often hosts an event around international races such as America’s Cup, Volvo Ocean Race, visits from British royalty, and the tall ship festival. There is information on the ships and often opportunities to board the boats, or at least get a closer look.

Team New Zealand in race 6 of the America's Cup World Series, Dec 2020

A few key Auckland sailing race events

  • America’s Cup racing America’s Cup is the world’s oldest and most prestigious sporting trophy, and Auckland is proud to have been the defending champions, therefore the host of the last race. New Zealand is the current holder of the coveted America’s Cup. In fact, this win for Emirates Team New Zealand was the second in a row and the fourth since 1995. The highly sought-after Cup resides at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, situated at Westhaven Marina.
  • Tall ship racing The Auckland Tall Ship Festival was the culmination event following a 1200 nautical mile race from Sydney, Australia to the Bay of Islands, New Zealand. These tall ships are 100% manually operated, taking up to 25 minutes to bring around (turn the boat). After a short rest, the boats sailed as a fleet to Auckland for the festival.
  • Volvo Ocean Race Round the World – New Zealand stopover With a new sponsor, the Whitbread Round the World race is now the Volvo Ocean Race Around the World. Racing every three years, the teams take about 9 months to complete the course. There are stopovers in a variety of cities, usually including Auckland, where the city has a huge display and match races.
  • Flying boat racing Nicknamed “flying boats,” this class of WASZPs are small, single-man sailing vessels, each with two foils attached to the underside. These lift the hull out of the water, allowing it to “fly” at twice the speed of the wind. There are about 60 of these vessels in New Zealand, and nearly half competed in the 2016 national championships (photo above) held on Manly Beach, Whangaparaoa, Auckland.
  • Flying Fifteens national championships in Auckland The Flying Fifteen are the world’s most popular single-design keel-boat class. It’s a high-performance dinghy with a waterline length of 15 feet that can reach speeds of 14 knots on a reach.

Wow! They let you loose on an America’s Cup yacht? This might be a reason to travel to Auckland, haha! I would love to do this – having sailed at club level I know that things sometimes turn hectic in a race, at least with part timers like us!

Even if you live in a harbour city, there’s nothing that takes away the magic of getting out on the water. You’re pics are lovely! We just need some sunshine!

May 2, 2022 at 2:55 pm

Sunset dinner cruise sounds great to me! Although the heritage boats would be a close second – I had no idea that sailing was such a big thing in Auckland!

May 2, 2022 at 1:22 am

Your post makes me want to be out on the water. I never knew you could ask to join a friendly race, and someone might let you. So much fun and excitement!

May 2, 2022 at 1:15 am

Such an awesome blog! I love the sea and sailing etc but my husband gets sea sick which makes things difficult sometimes but I tend to get him to take sea sick tabs if we really can’t miss something! These looks great options!

May 1, 2022 at 11:22 pm

Love sailing and would absolutely love getting out on the water in Auckland. I didn’t realize Team New Zealand had such a great track record!

May 1, 2022 at 9:59 pm

Racing seems fun, but I guess I would go with a cruise… especially during the sunset – sounds like perfection to me. Thank you for putting this together, I will save it for the future!

Auckland is so beautiful for sailing. Great ideas on how to get out on the water and enjoy it.

We do love to see a place from a new perspective. So it was great to read that there are so many great ways to see Auckland from the water. Many of these ways certainly would appeal to us. But the rum racing would definitely be top of hubby’s list! Good thing no experience is needed.

April 29, 2019 at 3:24 pm

I would want to to be on the yacht for the race. Those are all beautiful pictures, my favorite is the sunset.

April 29, 2019 at 1:10 pm

Wow, I’ve always wanted to go on a yacht in Auckland, but I have never been at all! This sounds like something I need to try when I go to Auckland (hopefully in the next 2 years)!

April 28, 2019 at 4:08 am

Ah it’s always so manic around there at this time of year. You’ve managed to take fantastic pictures though!

April 28, 2019 at 2:32 am

This sounds so exciting and exhilarating! I’ve never heard of yacht racing, so this post really enlightened me on that!

This is such a beautiful read. I am a sailor myself and I could just feel the thrill of racing just looking at your gorgeous photos! Wow! I wish I was there now:))

Looks like fun! Sometime when i have time I’m going to learn how to sail a boat. Been on many sail boat adventures (in the Philippines, New Zealand ) But never joined in and i want to!

May 25, 2015 at 10:45 am

Just find a friendly skipper and ask if you can tag along and help. We often have new sailors on-board. Start with friendly races, rather than highly competitive ones and you will have a better chance of getting on-board.

Oh this is an easy question and you already know what I’m going to say. On the yacht of course. Where’s the fun in watching from the shore.

Have a fabulous day. 🙂

Lovely photos. I went to the America’s Cup in San Francisco, a couple of years ago and got some new respect for sailing.

Thanks for sharing.

The yachts in the second photo look ready for business. Something about the solid colors and their cropped tops (I’m sure this must be the technical term) make them look aggressively awesome.

I agree with Mary about the rain photos! Those colors are something out of a Monet painting! I also liked the photos with your daughter. It’s so nice that you share many of the same interests.

I like the rain shot the best. What a gorgeous color it created!

New Zealand Yacht Charter - Beautiful mountains by Milford Sound, New Zealand

Yacht Charter New Zealand

From incredible geographical diversity and cultural attractions to stunning landscapes, the two islands of New Zealand provide enchanting cruising opportunities.

The dual islands of New Zealand offer an unparalleled multi-center cruising destination for luxury yachts. From their sporting and cultural attractions to the mountains, deep fjords, rainforests, glaciers, and geothermal pools, no other cruising ground offers such a vast and varied landscape.  Whether your itinerary takes in the marine reserves and islands lying off North Island or heads to South Island to glide across Marlborough Sounds, the best of New Zealand is all about taking to the water.

Cruising grounds for adventure seekers await on a New Zealand yacht charter

Boasting extensive coastlines, diverse natural landscapes, and untouched native forests, the two islands of New Zealand are perfect adventure cruising grounds. North Island is home to Auckland, aka “City of Sails,” where fine restaurants and shops abound. The capital of Wellington hosts numerous galleries and museums, while the Bay of Islands is a subtropical maritime park with an abundance of marine life. Alternatively, South Island guarantees flawless sailing conditions, restful retreats ashore and great sporting opportunities for the adventurous charterer. Home to Queenstown —  the country’s adventure capital — and Marlborough Sounds, it promises idyllic cruising with a backdrop of glorious mountain landscapes.

The majority of New Zealand’s landmass is south of Auckland, but the northern parts should not be missed. The landscape is dotted with subtropical forests, beaches, and historic settlements that will leave you in awe. The Bay of Islands is an idyllic spot for watersports and big-game fishing. Further south, you’ll enjoy the clear waters, fjords, and coves along Marlborough Sounds, which offer stunning anchorages. While the scenery alone of South Island is worth traveling to see – some of the most spectacular cruising grounds in the world can be found around the fjords of Milford Sound.

What's the weather like in New Zealand?

New Zealand’s weather varies significantly depending on the region and the time of year.

North Island

The North Island generally has a temperate maritime climate, with mild temperatures and moderate rainfall throughout the year. Summers (December to February) are warm, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F), while winters (June to August) are cooler, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F). The North Island can experience occasional tropical cyclones during the summer months.

South Island

The South Island has a more diverse climate, with a mixture of temperate, alpine, and oceanic climates. The northern regions of the South Island, such as Nelson and Marlborough, have warm summers and mild winters, while the southern regions, such as Fiordland and the Southern Alps, have cooler temperatures and higher rainfall, particularly in winter.

The east coast of both the North and South Islands tends to be drier and sunnier than the west coast. Cities such as Napier and Blenheim on the east coast often experience long, hot summers with little rainfall.

The west coast of both islands is known for its wet and mild climate, with high rainfall throughout the year. Places like Greymouth and Hokitika on the west coast of the South Island receive some of the highest rainfall in New Zealand.

Mountainous Regions

New Zealand’s mountainous regions, including the Southern Alps and the central North Island volcanoes, experience alpine climates with cold temperatures and snowfall during the winter months. These areas are popular for skiing and snowboarding in winter.

Discover New Zealand's Breathtaking Coastlines, Pristine Lakes, and Iconic Fjords

New Zealand is a dream destination for boating enthusiasts, with its stunning coastline, pristine islands, and diverse marine life. Whether you want to sail around the scenic bays, cruise to the remote fjords, or charter a luxury yacht for a special occasion, you’ll find plenty of options to rent a boat in New Zealand and explore this beautiful country from the water. In this article, we’ll give you some tips on sailing in New Zealand, suggest some itineraries for your boating adventure, and share some of the top experiences and attractions you can enjoy along the way. We’ll also provide some safety and emergency information to help you plan your trip.

Itineraries

New Zealand has two main islands, North Island and South Island, each offering different landscapes, climates, and attractions. Depending on your preferences, budget, and time, you can choose to rent a sailboat in New Zealand and explore one or both islands, or opt for a private boat rental in New Zealand with captain and let someone else take care of the navigation. Here are some of the top nearby destinations that can be reached from New Zealand by boat:

Bay of Islands : This is one of the most popular boating destinations in New Zealand, located in the north of North Island. The bay has more than 140 islands, each with its own charm and character. You can anchor in sheltered coves, swim with dolphins, fish for marlin, or visit historic sites like the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. The bay is also home to the famous Hole in the Rock, a natural arch that you can sail through at high tide. You can rent a boat in New Zealand for a week and explore the Bay of Islands at your own pace, or join a daily boat rental in New Zealand and enjoy a guided tour of the highlights.

Hauraki Gulf : Just south of the Bay of Islands, the Hauraki Gulf is another boating paradise, with 50 islands and hundreds of anchorages to choose from. The gulf is also part of a marine park that protects a rich biodiversity of marine life, including whales, dolphins, penguins, and seabirds. You can sail to Waiheke Island and sample some of the best wines in New Zealand, visit Rangitoto Island and hike to the summit of an extinct volcano, or explore the historic Kawau Island and its mansion house. The gulf is also close to Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, where you can find many options for motor boat charters in New Zealand with captain or party boat rentals in New Zealand .

Abel Tasman National Park: On the northern tip of South Island, Abel Tasman National Park is a stunning area of golden beaches, turquoise waters, and native forests. The park is best explored by boat, as there are many secluded bays and islands that are only accessible by water. You can rent a sailboat in New Zealand and cruise along the coast, stopping at places like Anchorage Bay, Bark Bay, Tonga Island Marine Reserve, or Awaroa Inlet. You can also kayak, snorkel, hike, or camp along the way. The park is also famous for its coastal track, one of the best hikes in New Zealand.

Marlborough Sounds: Further south on South Island, Marlborough Sounds is a network of sunken valleys that form intricate waterways and islands. The sounds are ideal for sailing in New Zealand, as they offer calm waters, scenic views, and abundant wildlife. You can charter a luxury yacht in New Zealand and enjoy the comfort and convenience of a fully equipped vessel, or rent a boat in New Zealand for a week and discover the sounds at your leisure. Some of the highlights include Queen Charlotte Sound, Pelorus Sound, D’Urville Island, and Ship Cove.

Fiordland National Park: On the southwestern corner of South Island lies Fiordland National Park, a World Heritage Site that protects some of the most spectacular scenery in New Zealand. The park is famous for its dramatic fiords (also spelled fjords), which are deep valleys carved by glaciers that reach the sea. The fiords are surrounded by towering mountains, rainforests, waterfalls, and wildlife. You can rent a boat in New Zealand for a week and explore some of the fiords like Milford Sound (the most famous), Doubtful Sound (the largest), or Dusky Sound (the most remote). Alternatively, you can join a daily boat rental in New Zealand and enjoy a cruise with commentary and meals included.

Visit Hobbiton : If you’re a fan of The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit movies, you’ll love visiting Hobbiton, the movie set where the scenes of The Shire were filmed. Located near Matamata in North Island, Hobbiton is a charming village of hobbit holes, gardens, and a pub. You can take a guided tour of the set and learn about the behind-the-scenes stories, or book a birthday party boat in New Zealand and celebrate in style at the Green Dragon Inn.

See the glowworms : New Zealand is home to a unique species of glowworms that light up the dark caves with their bioluminescence. You can see these amazing creatures in several places, but one of the best is Waitomo Caves in North Island. You can take a boat ride through the caves and marvel at the starry spectacle, or join a more adventurous tour that involves abseiling, rafting, or tubing through the caves.

Experience Māori culture : Māori are the indigenous people of New Zealand, and their culture is an integral part of the country’s identity. You can learn more about Māori history, traditions, and values by visiting a marae (meeting house), watching a kapa haka (cultural performance), or joining a hāngi (feast cooked in an earth oven). Some of the best places to experience Māori culture are Rotorua, Waitangi, and Te Papa Museum.

Go whale watching : New Zealand is one of the best places in the world to see whales, as many species migrate, feed, or breed in its waters. You can spot sperm whales, humpback whales, orca whales, blue whales, and more throughout the year. Some of the best places to go whale watching are Kaikoura, Auckland, Bay of Islands, and Fiordland. You can join a boat tour with a professional guide, or charter a luxury yacht in New Zealand and enjoy a private whale watching experience.

Skydive over Lake Taupo : If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, you can’t beat skydiving over Lake Taupo, the largest lake in New Zealand. You’ll jump from 15,000 feet and freefall for 60 seconds, reaching speeds of up to 200 km/h. You’ll then enjoy a scenic parachute ride over the lake and the surrounding volcanoes. You can also skydive over other locations in New Zealand, such as Queenstown, Abel Tasman, or Bay of Islands.

New Zealand also has some of the best beaches in the world, where you can relax, swim, surf, or sunbathe. Here are some of the best beaches in New Zealand:

Despite its name, it’s actually only 55 miles long, but it still offers plenty of space and scenery for beach lovers. You can drive along the beach with a 4WD vehicle, surf the waves, or watch the sunset over the Tasman Sea.

Hot Water Beach : This is a unique beach on the east coast of Coromandel Peninsula, where you can dig your own hot pool in the sand. The beach has underground hot springs that seep through the sand at low tide, creating natural spas that can reach up to 64°C. You can rent a spade from a nearby shop or bring your own, and enjoy a relaxing soak in your own hot water pool.

Piha Beach : This is a popular beach near Auckland, known for its black sand and big surf. The beach is surrounded by rugged cliffs and native bush, creating a dramatic contrast with the blue water. The beach is also home to Lion Rock, a volcanic formation that resembles a lion’s head. You can climb to the top of the rock and enjoy panoramic views of the beach and the ocean.

Kaiteriteri Beach : This is a golden beach on the edge of Abel Tasman National Park, where you can access some of the best kayaking and hiking trails in the country. Racing yacht runs aground at Lyttelton days before Sail GP regatta

A 12m racing yacht has beached in Lyttelton Harbour days before Christchurch hosts the glitzy international Sail GP regatta.

The Harbourmaster’s Office at Environment Canterbury said it was notified of a recreational vessel aground near Pāua-o-Hinekotau Head, west of Te Waipapa/Diamond Harbour on Wednesday evening.

“All five crew were rescued by the Coastguard and returned safely to Lyttelton [on Wednesday] night,” said Environment Canterbury’s regional on-scene commander, Emma Parr.

The racing yacht remains aground at the base of a cliff with difficult access by foot.

The yacht has 15 litres of diesel on board, in sealed tanks, but Parr says the risk of environmental damage from its grounding is low.

“Weather conditions are not favourable today, which means that a safe recovery attempt may not be possible prior to SailGP,” she said.

Around 22,000 people are expected to flock to Lyttelton over this weekend to watch the Sail GP event.

Lyttelton Port was closed overnight as a precaution due to the vessel being unsecured and the potential of floating debris.

“The yacht has remained in the same position but is significantly damaged. It is now secure via ropes to the shore,” she said.

Environment Canterbury says it’s monitoring the situation closely and working with the owner, insurers and salvors to collect debris as required.

“There may be loose debris under the surface of the water. We are asking the public to stay well clear of this operational area,” Parr said.

The international sailing competition set for Lyttelton Habour this weekend, SailGP , will still go ahead as planned.

The grounding comes after a clam fishing trawler ran aground on Waikuku Beach on Monday.

Maritime NZ sent investigations staff to the scene to start inquiries. The investigation into the grounding is ongoing.

The Herald understands the boat has since been moved back into the water without any damage.
