Moonen Yachts announces new management team

The dutch superyacht builder has announced changes to its management team with immediate effect….

Moonen Yachts has announced that it has instated a new senior management team at the Dutch shipyard. According to the Moonen team, today’s announcement, which is effective immediately, is in line with the company’s strategy to grow the company and expand the number of yachts in build. Johan Dubbelman has been appointed commercial director, Nick van Zon technical director and Marianne Hendriks is to lead the business as managing director.

“By putting every individual in their strongest position, the new management will be efficient and decisive for the future,” comments director and shareholder Matthew Baxter. “Our business continues to be challenging and extremely promising. Since our start, Louise and I have invested a lot in building yachts on speculation, we are now starting to see amazing results as we notice a growing demand for semi-custom yachts with a short delivery time. Therefore, it is of utmost importance for Moonen Yachts to have a strong, energetic and integrated management team, and I believe that with this new team, we are well prepared to build on the current foundation and strengthen our unique worldwide position in the superyacht market.”

The Moonen team explains that the decision has come at a time “where the company grows on a global scale, and strong strategic leadership will be imperative.” To put emphasis on the growth of the company, the business believes that it needs to maximise focus and it is believed that under the guidance of Marianne Hendriks as managing director, this will be possible.

According to The Superyacht Agency, Moonen has delivered an average of 0.7 vessels per year since 2010. However, throughout this period it is well known that Moonen yachts had experienced financial difficulties after a less than ideal experience with its former owners. However, after having been acquired by Louise and Matthew Baxter in 2019, the Dutch shipyard is already set for its most productive year since 2013.

Speaking with SuperyachtNews in April, Hendriks revealed that, even in light of the various guidelines and protocols imposed on working environments as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, Moonen was still on track to deliver the two projects one scheduled for completion in 2020 and one for 2021. Furthermore, she remained confident that the yard will be able to find buyers for the projects commenting: “The world may have changed, but the beautiful design of a Moonen hasn’t. COVID-19 is not withholding us from our future focus. Yes, it does affect us…but it doesn’t put us in a state of misery.” To fortify its superyacht proposition there are a number of potential projects on the table including the possibility of another 36m Martinique, a 42m Marquis, a complete new design with Harrison-Eidsgaard, but most likely a stunning new 33 meter designed by Rene van der Velden.

Moonen Yachts to boost production, after new owners’ identity is revealed

Moonen is to lift production to two to three superyachts a year, after its acquisition by Matthew and Louise Baxter.

Superyacht builder Moonen Yachts is to “scale up production” its CEO, Johan Dubbelman, has pledged after the new owners of the formerly bankrupt firm were revealed to be Australian industrialist couple, Matthew and Louise Baxter.

“We have trust in these new investors and have faith that they will establish a strong future for Moonen Yachts,” says Dubbelman. “Our aim is to scale up production efficiently and start two new-build projects in the upcoming six months. Following on with the current build, we will start a second 36 metre and a 44 metre, both new and future-proof timeless Moonen yachts with interiors designed by the award-winning renowned design houses, like Studio Indigo.”

Speculative building helped to cut delivery times while retaining the option of  customisation, which are big benefits for clients, he added. The market for 30- to 50- metre luxury yachts was said to be “solid”. Currently in build is the award winning 36-metre Martinique , which is 50% ready. The aim is to display the vessel at the Monaco Yacht Show 2020 .

Speculative building

The Baxters decided to acquire the Dutch superyacht yard, based at Hertogenbosch, after a chance encounter with the Moonen 84 yacht, Aurora, while cruising in Pittwater harbour, Sydney, Australia. “It is a privilege to own a yard like Moonen,” said Matthew Baxter, executive chairman of the privately-owned AM Group of manufacturing companies, which he established in 1972.

“The brand has an impeccable pedigree, the yachts are true Dutch quality and the team is young, reliable, talented and very loyal to the company. These characteristics are fundamental for success.”

The yard had to ‘re-energise’

Baxter acknowledged the yard had to “re-energise”, but predicted a bright future based on “a strong strategic plan and a strong balance sheet”.

Most of the workforce has been retained and Moonen pledged to reinforce the cooperation with long-term strategic partners and subcontractors.

Meanwhile, Moonen Shipyards was declared bankrupt by a Dutch court on Friday July 12th, after its owner Mexican steel-making monolith Altos Hornos de Mexico (AHMSA) was said to be unable to meet the builder’s   financial obligations.

Speaking after the bankruptcy declaration, Dubbelmann hinted at the existence of a new financial backer (the Baxters) that would enable the yacht builder to make a new start. “The aim of the new investor is to build two to three yachts per year ,” said Dubbelmann in July.

Moonen Yachts – Building a Lasting Legacy

moonen yacht owners

A new management team and superb new projects have pushed the brand to a worldwide top position

In 2020, Dutch superyacht builder Moonen Yachts sold two 36-metre Martinique yachts. The first, M/Y KOKORO, was delivered to her owner earlier this year and the second project, YN200, will be completed by the end of this year for a repeat customer in the United States. Furthermore, the shipyard has an additional 36-metre Martinique and a 34-metre ‘gentleman’s yacht’ Moonen 110 in-build.

Rapidly increasing production in the last year, Marianne Hendriks, Managing Director of Moonen Yachts, attributes the shipyard’s success in part to the enthusiasm and encouragement of Australian owners, Matthew and Louise Baxter, in combination with the new management team, which has lifted the spirits of all employees and has pushed the brand to a worldwide top position.

Built to Stand the Test of Time

Currently in production, 36-metre Martiniques YN200 and YN201 have been designed by René van der Velden and Diana Yacht Design. The first in line for completion, YN200, will build on the success of her predecessors with the addition of a sparkling Jacuzzi on the extra-large sundeck, which has been extended by 2.5 metres from the original design.

YN200’s owners have enjoyed their beautiful Moonen 84 for the past three years and had many reasons to return to Moonen for their new yacht. “Moonen’s reputation for unprecedented engineering and quality of mechanical systems and general construction” being one. They say “The sophistication of the ship’s systems are equivalent to that of a ship twice its size. There is no compromising any inch of the ship’s parts or materials whether it be a simple faucet to a major water filtration system. But more importantly, it’s the Moonen people whose pride shines through the manufacturing of their ships. We are excited about this endeavour and a lifelong relationship with the Baxter’s and Moonen family”.

Built for private use to explore the US-west coast, the owners of YN200 will enjoy her spacious main deck which is home to a large salon, adjacent formal dining area and an impressive forward facing master stateroom. The remaining guest accommodation can be found on the lower deck, comprising four cabins with two additional Pullman berths accommodating a total of 12 guests and seven crew.

The Bridge deck now features an additional day head, a design feature that has been included to improve the yachts’ usability. To the aft, the winter garden offers an indoor lounge that can be closed off with sliding doors, or kept open to allow access to the shaded exterior deck, creating a large indoor/outdoor space for entertaining.

With a draft of just 2.1 metres, both YN200 and YN201 can travel the world and comfortably motor into almost any port.

Reaching New Heights

With a slightly different exterior design, the larger 42-metre Moonen Marquis has also been gaining a lot of interest. From the five-cabin layout, sleeping a total of 12 guests, to the storage space for two tenders, every detail across her three luxurious decks has been impeccably thought out. An exquisite full-beam master stateroom on main deck includes a full bath and shower and an open plan lounge and study.

The aft of the yacht is dedicated to alfresco entertaining, with tinted glass bulwarks fitted on the aft decks to provide complete privacy without obstructing your outlook.

Outdoor highlights include the multi-purpose beach club with a dedicated day head and the large sundeck with a plunge pool. Indoors, guests will enjoy the bridge deck offering a private bar, indoor lounge and spacious alfresco dining area which can easily be extended to double the indoor space – a benefit for those located in warmer climates and who like the comfort of the cooler indoors.

Timeless Evolution

In February, Moonen announced their classically inspired gentleman’s yacht the Moonen 110 would become their next build – YN202.

With exterior lines that differ from those of their Caribbean line, Moonen 110 will attract a different audience. The shipyard explains that the 34-metre vessel is an evolution of two of their most timeless builds, the Moonen 84 and Moonen 97, and promises the beauty and luxury of her sister-ships, with a modern twist.

Moonen 110

Characterised by her sleek, low-profile design, Moonen 110 will be presented across three decks with ample outdoor living. She will feature floor to ceiling windows in the dining area and an optional Jacuzzi on the bridge deck.

In total, 10 guests will be accommodated within a full-beam master stateroom ideally located on the main deck; and a full-beam VIP stateroom and two guests cabins on the lower deck.

Moonen 110 yacht

Moonen Yachts releases new imagery of first Moonen 110

Moonen Yachts has offered a look inside the first hull of its new 34-metre Moonen 110 series, also known as YN202. This follows the unit's successful sea trials in May, close to the shipyard's Den Bosch construction site in the Netherlands.

The new model has been described by the shipyard as a "gentleman's yacht" and borrows design cues from the Moonen 84 and 97 models.

Moonen teamed up once again with René van der Velden and Diana Yacht Design – the trio had previously worked on the successful Martinique series – to create the exterior profile and naval architecture for the new model, which came about after a consultation process with current and prospective Moonen owners.

London-based Studio Indigo is behind the yacht's interior concept which features "clean, fluid lines, highlighted by curved organic forms that create a relaxing and comforting interior.” The team also pointed to "a sweeping spiral staircase using fluted natural timbers" that sits at the heart of the yacht and its design.

Accommodation inside the 267 GT interior is for a total of 10 guests comprising a full-beam master stateroom, two VIP cabins and two convertible twins. The crew quarters meanwhile comprise a captain’s cabin and two twin crew cabins.

Elsewhere, YN202 boasts numerous outdoor living areas, as well as floor-to-ceiling windows in the main saloon and a spacious bridge that has been optimised for entertaining.

In the engine room, the Moonen 110 offers low noise levels and low fuel consumption of 60 litres per hour while cruising at nine knots. Power comes from twin Caterpillar C18 ACERT engines and she will cruise comfortably at 10 knots with a 3,500-nautical-mile range.

A shallow draft of two metres will allow the Moonen 110 access to remote locations including the Bahamas, the Caribbean and the Great Barrier Reef. This model can also store a 7.5-metre tender longitudinally on its 72-square-metre top deck.

Speaking on the new model, Moonen’s commercial director Victor Caminada said: “ The Moonen 110 is a timeless beauty that exemplifies Dutch design excellence. For us, that means beautifully designed spaces to be in, but also precision engineering and high-quality craftsmanship."

According to BOAT Pro , Moonen Yachts currently has three units under construction, all from the Moonen Martinique series.

VIDEO: First Moonen 110 yacht completes sea trials

Moonen Yachts - YN202 Moonen 110 Sea trials (4)

The first 34-metre Moonen 110 has completed a week of sea trials including a successful endurance test off the Dutch coast on the North Sea. Moonen Yachts is completing the long-range steel yacht at its shipyard in the Netherlands. The Moonen 110 is available for delivery on May 31.

Moonen Yachts Project Manager John Bechtold was very satisfied with the yacht’s performance at sea: ‘It’s always exciting to take a brand new design out for the first time. She performed very well at sea, very stable and comfortable. We really noticed how low the noise and vibrations levels are. She’s a beautiful boat.’

The Moonen 110 recaptures the quality and ocean-going performance of past generations of Moonen yachts, with more space, future-proof technology and more economical operation as low as 60 litres per hour.

‘The Moonen 110 is a timeless beauty that exemplifies Dutch design excellence,’ says Commercial Director Victor Caminada. ‘For example the owner stateroom is exceptional thanks to both the sweeping 180-degree panoramic views as well as the high comfort levels. When the yacht is at anchor with the generator running, the owner stateroom will have a noise level of just 43dB(A).’

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

moonen yacht owners

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

moonen yacht owners

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

moonen yacht owners

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

moonen yacht owners

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

moonen yacht owners

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

moonen yacht owners

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

moonen yacht owners

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Billionaire fights to dock his boat on water behind his house. His 164-foot boat, that is.

The love of the water, and a mega-yacht to enjoy it, is putting one resident at odds with village of north palm beach leaders..

moonen yacht owners

For some people, the ultimate Florida lifestyle is a waterfront house , a private dock and a boat parked next to it. But what if that boat is a mega-yacht , and the mega-yacht stretches 164 feet?

That's the conundrum facing the Village of North Palm Beach.

This tiny community in northern Palm Beach County, with only 13,000 full-time residents, has an identity so tied to the water that a ship's steering wheel is the village's emblem.

But it's that love of the water that is putting one resident at odds with village leaders.

For the past several years, homeowner Michael Bozutto has been battling the village for the right to park his 164-foot Westport, dubbed Honey, behind a home he owns at 932 Shore Drive.

The house, built in 1961, is a one-story, ranch-style property with three bedrooms on a half-acre lot. Bozzuto paid $840,247 for the house in 2014, according to Palm Beach County property records.

Lawsuit rooted in dispute over where to dock mega-yacht

What makes this plain house special is its location. It's on a rare corner bordered on the north and east by navigable waters that provide access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet. The east-facing dock is large enough to accommodate Bozzuto's motor yacht.

Since Bozutto bought Honey for an undisclosed sum a decade ago, he mostly has parked it at the Old Port Cove Marina, near Tiger Woods' 155-foot showy mega-yacht, ironically dubbed Privacy.

More recently, Bozzuto has wanted to park Honey alongside his Shore Drive house, one of four houses he owns in the village. While Bozzuto keeps some personal property at the Shore Drive house, he lives at a house he owns at Harbour Isles Court.

Village officials warned Bozzuto he can't park Honey at 932 Shore Drive because boats can only be parked on docks behind houses that are occupied by the homeowner.

But village rules do not define the word "occupied." For instance, the rules do not state that occupied means the house is a residence where the owner lives. Village rules also contain no restrictions on the size of boats that can be kept at private docks.

After years of pushing back against what he believes are fuzzy rules, Bozzuto in March filed a lawsuit against the village.

More: Cannonsport Marina sells for $58.5 million in big deal for tiny Palm Beach Shores

He alleged the municipality is illegally depriving him of his property rights because nothing in the village code prevents him from mooring Honey at his house. He is asking a Palm Beach County Circuit Court judge to rule that he has a constitutional right to dock Honey there.

Gregory Coleman, Bozzuto's West Palm Beach attorney, said the village has plenty of waterfront homes with yachts parked behind them. But Coleman said the village is illegally blocking Bozzuto from docking Honey at his house because the village is bending to pressure from a handful of neighbors who think the boat is too big.

The selective enforcement is wrong, said Coleman, a former president of the Florida Bar.

"He's a very under-the-radar guy who doesn't cause anybody any problems," Coleman said of Bozzuto. "He pays his property taxes, and he wants to be left alone by the village of North Palm Beach. Unfortunately, they are singling Mike out."

Neither Leonard Rubin, the village's longtime attorney, nor Village Manager Chuck Huff responded to requests for comment.

Eric Stettin, a Fort Lauderdale-based attorney who is representing the village in the Bozzuto lawsuit, said he could not comment on pending litigation.

What good is a man's castle if he can't have a boat in his moat?

Coleman's lawsuit describes the conflict as a battle over property rights, but real estate and yachting experts say it's also a sign of the times.

As wealthy new residents pour into the county wanting all the perks of the Sunshine State, they want a boat to go along with their waterfront homes and golf club memberships. Some longtime residents fear Palm Beach County is turning into a playground for billionaires, to the detriment of everyday people who also want to live in sunshine and peace.

This conflict between Old Florida and new money is an ever-present tension, but even seasoned yacht brokers say they've never seen interest in luxury yachts quite as strong as it is now.

More: Illegal boat slips are popping near Palm Beach Gardens. Residents want regulators to act

"What we've seen in the marketplace right after COVID in the yachting industry, and especially the superyacht segment, is the most incredible growth ever seen in the history of yachting to date," said Shannon McCoy, a luxury yacht advisor and broker with Worth Avenue Yachts in Palm Beach.

"A lot of people are moving here with serious money," added Pascal Savoy, U.S. managing director of Camper & Nicholsons International yacht brokers in Fort Lauderdale.

While in the past Palm Beach County was not considered lively enough for some buyers, Savoy said the county's growing sophistication is putting it on the map in a way never seen before.

"It's a mini-Monaco for us," Savoy said.

Prices for mega-yachts can range from $18 million to $60 million, or many times that, for the largest and most decked-out mega-yachts, Savoy said.

While some yachts can be glitzy, a 164-foot Westport is considered a more low-profile boat, Savoy added.

Michael Bozzuto's interests: Houses, boats and philanthropy

Bozzuto is no newcomer to North Palm Beach. He's been a resident of the village for 20 years.

He is the billionaire owner of a family-owned supermarket wholesaler in Connecticut, and an investor and philanthropist who likes to collect houses and yachts, Coleman said.

In addition to the four North Palm Beach houses and several yachts he owns, Bozzuto in February paid a whopping $31.1 million for a house in the Town of Palm Beach Shores. The house, which has two docks, sits just north of the Palm Beach/Lake Worth Inlet.

Twin City Mall: North Palm clears way for redevelopment, taller buildings at landmark site

Coleman said there is plenty of room for other boaters to navigate the waterway when Honey is parked at the Shore Drive house in North Palm Beach. And while other people may not have as large a yacht, there are other sizeable yachts parked on docks behind other North Palm Beach homes, too, he added.

At a 2017 village council meeting, then-Mayor Darryl Aubrey commented on the issue, according to the complaint.

"When I didn't live here full time, I had a boat sitting in my dock, I was gone nine months of the year. I don't see how you can say that someone has to be in a residence year-round, seems to be some interpretation of occupant, there would be an enormous number of violations," Aubrey said.

Another member of the village council asked if the village had a definition now, the complaint said.

Rubin, the village attorney, replied: "No, we don't," according to the lawsuit.

Show me the money? Here it is: West Palm and Palm Beach rank in top 5 as cities with fastest growth in millionaires

Palm Beach County's waterways run deep, and they are popular

The yacht docking dispute is particularly timely, given the scarcity of dock space for boats of all sizes.

The most convenient place to park a boat is on the water behind a house, brokers say. But not every waterway or channel can accommodate the draft, or depth, of a mega-yacht.

However, the dock behind Bozzuto's Shore Drive house can.

Not only is the Westport not known for its deep hulls, but the waterway also is typical of northern Palm Beach County, which boasts deep water and easy access to the ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet, said Coleman, a lifelong boater.

"In Palm Beach County, they have deeper water, and it allows people to have larger yachts," Savoy agreed.

But not every waterway is deep enough for every boat.

McCoy said she specializes in helping advise potential yacht owners about the county's varied water depths before they buy a house, if they plan to dock their yacht behind it.

If yacht owners don't have a private dock, the other option is a marina. But marina space is hard to find, with many dock berths reserved for months in advance, McCoy said.

Despite the challenges of owning a boat and finding a place to dock it, yacht brokers say demand continues.

They see interest continuing from business executives moving here with their families as they relocate their companies to Palm Beach County. There's also a growing demand for yachts among female buyers, McCoy added.

They also see younger mega-yacht buyers, some even in their early 30s. This is in sharp contrast to the mostly older buyers in the past, Savoy said.

Palm Beach County may not be as go-go as Miami-Dade County when it comes to showy ships, but if interest continues, "it's coming," Savoy said. "You're going to attract bigger yachts."

Put another way: "No one needs a boat, but everyone needs a boat," McCoy said. "It's the ultimate lifestyle."

The Dali was just starting a 27-day voyage.

The ship had spent two days in Baltimore’s port before setting off.

The Dali was less than 30 minutes into its planned 27-day journey when the ship ran into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday.

The ship, which was sailing under the Singaporean flag, was on its way to Sri Lanka and was supposed to arrive there on April 22, according to VesselFinder, a ship tracking website.

The Dali, which is nearly 1,000 feet long, left the Baltimore port around 1 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday. The ship had two pilots onboard, according to a statement by its owners, Grace Ocean Investment. There were 22 crew members on board, the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore said in a statement. There were no reports of any injuries, Grace Ocean said.

Before heading off on its voyage, the Dali had returned to the United States from Panama on March 19, harboring in New York. It then arrived on Saturday in Baltimore, where it spent two days in the port.

Maersk, the shipping giant, said in a statement on Tuesday that it had chartered the vessel, which was carrying Maersk cargo. No Maersk crew and personnel were onboard, the statement said, adding that the company was monitoring the investigations being carried out by the authorities and by Synergy Group, the company that was operating the vessel.

“We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected,” the Maersk statement said.

The Dali was built in 2015 by the South Korea-based Hyundai Heavy Industries. The following year, the ship was involved in a minor incident when it hit a stone wall at the port of Antwerp . The Dali sustained damage at the time, but no one was injured.

Yakima River Canyon property moves into public ownership

A ranch property and popular boat launch in the Yakima River Canyon are now in public hands.

The Bureau of Land Management announced this week that it has taken ownership of 647 acres in the desert canyon south of Ellensburg.

The property was once the Yakima Canyon Ranch, and it includes a boat launch known as Bighorn that has long been used by anglers and others who float the river.

The Western Rivers Conservancy bought the land in 2021 with plans to transfer it to the BLM.

In March, the transfer was completed, ensuring the public will have access to the land surrounding 3½ miles of the famed trout fishery.

“I think it’s a super special area and we’re super proud of being able to put together this assemblage,” said Sue Doroff, president of Western Rivers Conservancy. “I’m just delighted that it’s now open for all to enjoy and for the fish and wildlife to benefit.”

BLM spokesman Travis Edwards said the agency paid $3.3 million for the property and used money from the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

The purchase adds to the 9,000 acres of BLM land in the 27-mile canyon between Ellensburg and Yakima, which is home to elk, deer, bighorn sheep and more.

“Incorporating this property empowers BLM to manage the land for multiple uses, including recreation and conservation, and maintain the health and diversity of the landscapes to benefit local wildlife,” said Curtis Bryan, BLM’s Wenatchee field manager, in a news release.

The property is split into three parcels – Bighorn, Beavertail and Lower Umtanum.

Bighorn is on the upstream end of the ranch, closer to Ellensburg. Red’s Fly Shop has managed the boat ramp there for several years, charging floaters a fee to launch there. BLM will take over management of the ramp.

The parcel also includes a swath of land on the opposite side of the river.

The Lower Umtanum parcel is the farthest downstream, next to the existing Umtanum campground.

BLM officials are planning improvements to both of those parcels this spring to prepare them for public access, according to a BLM news release. A grand opening is planned for May 16.

Beavertail is between those two properties, and there are no immediate plans for it. Edwards said BLM officials are going to have to evaluate that part of the property because of its “unique terrain.”

He added that it’s “not an ideal spot for the development of recreational facilities,” but that it does give the BLM a chance to consider restoration work.

He also said the agency would begin evaluating long-term management options for the properties and that the process would include public input.

Western Rivers Conservancy has completed projects like this one all over the West, including several projects in Washington. In October, the organization purchased another piece of land along the Yakima and conveyed it to Kittitas County .

Doroff said the group had its eyes on the Yakima Canyon Ranch for years. When the owner was ready to sell, the group jumped on the opportunity.

“It’s one of these projects that was just meant to be,” she said.

She added that while it will be great for river users, putting the property in public ownership will also benefit the animal and plant life in the canyon.

“While this is a recreationist’s dream, it’s also a very special place for the flora and fauna,” Doroff said.

Crackdown on boat owners moored on River Thames

Sunlight beams down on Molesey Lock in Surrey

Rule-breaking boats at Molesey Lock are facing civil trespass proceedings

  • Published 52 minutes ago

Boat owners who ignored short stay rules on the River Thames and instead moored for years are facing civil trespass proceedings.

The Environment Agency (EA) says it has successfully brought the action against a number of boaters who have moored continuously at West Molesey in Kent.

A judge found those who overstay deprive others of their rights to pull ashore and “change the character” of the river, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Current rules only permit boats travelling along the river for pleasure to moor for no longer than 24 hours.

The EA said it was forced to take action as a "last resort" after a series of complaints and years of failed efforts to persuade boat owners to move voluntarily.

EA manager Joe Cuthbertson said he hoped the boat owners will move before "enforcement action becomes necessary" as "this is all we have ever asked of them”.

'Could move elsewhere'

In Autumn 2022 the EA served notices on boats moored without permission saying they were "trespassing on the riverbed".

In March 2023 they issued proceedings demanding the remaining 10 boats leave.

The hearing took place over three days last year and the written judgement was passed down in March 2024, in favour of the EA on all points.

In a statement, the judge said boat owners would not be made homeless, adding: "They will be prevented from long-term and residential mooring on this stretch of the river, but could move elsewhere.”

Owner of ship that crashed into Baltimore bridge will likely try to invoke 1851 law used to cap damages after Titanic disaster

  • The owner of the ship that crashed into the Baltimore bridge faces a mountain of potential lawsuits.
  • Experts say the owner will likely try to invoke an 1851 law to try to cap potential damages.
  • The Limitation of Liability Act was successfully used by the Titanic owner after the 1912 sinking.

Insider Today

From potential wrongful death lawsuits to property damage lawsuits, the owner of the container ship that crashed into a major Baltimore bridge , destroying it, can expect to face a mountain of legal troubles.

Analysts have already estimated that claims from the deadly early Tuesday disaster that caused Maryland's Francis Scott Key Bridge to abruptly collapse could cost insurers billions of dollars .

Three maritime legal experts told Business Insider that the owner of the Singapore-flagged vessel called the Dali will almost certainly invoke a 19th-century federal law — that was successfully used by the owner of the Titanic — to try to limit its liability in the bevy of lawsuits that are expected to arise.

"If they're fully successful, it will cap how much they have to pay in damages," Michael Sturley, an expert in maritime law and professor at the University of Texas at Austin's School of Law, told BI.

Grace Ocean Private Ltd, the owner of the 95,000-ton Dali ship that was bound for Sri Lanka before smashing into one of the bridge's support pillars, has about six months to file a petition in federal court under the 1851 Limitation of Liability Act.

Grace Ocean Private Ltd did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider on Thursday.

"The chances of their filing a limitation action are somewhere north of 99.99%," Sturley said.

Vessel owners could get damage claims capped at the ship's value after an incident

The statute allows vessel owners to cap any damage claims stemming from a maritime catastrophe at the post-incident value of the ship, as well as the money owed from the freight the ship was hauling, the experts said.

"In essence, it's treated as though the ship itself is its own one-ship corporation," said Sturley. "So you're, in essence, saying, take all the assets of this one ship corporation and use those to pay the claims."

"It could save them a billion dollars," Sturley guessed.

In order for limitation to be granted by a judge under the law, the vessel owner would have to establish that it was not at fault for the maritime incident and that it had no "privity or knowledge" of any negligence or conditions that led to the incident.

Whether the owner of the ship will succeed if it files a petition to limit liability depends on what the investigation into the disaster turns up, according to the maritime legal experts.

The Dali's crew had reported that the ship lost power just before the vessel slammed into the bridge and sent a group of construction workers and vehicles plunging into the Patapsco River.

Two people were rescued from the water after the bridge collapsed. On Wednesday, officials said that the bodies of two victims were recovered from a submerged pickup truck. Four others are presumed dead.

Related stories

Part of the probe into the tragedy will examine whether "dirty fuel" had something to do with the ship's initial loss of power , sources familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal.

The owner of the Titanic invoked the 1851 law after the 1912 sinking

Sturley said that the limitation act "is regularly invoked, but much less often successful."

Martin Davies, the director of the Maritime Law Center at Tulane University School of Law, told BI that statistics show that the "majority of limitation petitions fail, whatever the circumstances, because it is relatively easy for the liability claimants to establish 'fault or privity' on the part of the shipowner."

Still, filing a petition for limitation allows a ship owner to channel any litigation into one court, which Davies called a "significant advantage in itself."

In the case of the Titanic, the petition for limitation was a success.

Following the 1912 sinking of the famed ocean liner that left more than 1,500 people dead, the White Star Line sought to limit its liability in United States lawsuits to $92,000, the value of the recovered lifeboats, according to Reuters .

The case went to the US Supreme Court, and the court ultimately sided with the White Star Line. Millions in legal claims had been filed against the White Star Line, which ultimately settled all cases for a total of $664,000 .

"The Titanic was a brand-new ship," Davies said. "The cause of the casualty was a pure sailing error — going too fast in iceberg-heavy waters. There was no 'fault or privity' on the part of the shipowner there."

Meanwhile, Oregon-based maritime lawyer Gordon Carey — who in 2019 filed a personal injury lawsuit against Grace Ocean Private Ltd on behalf of a man who was injured on another ship — told BI he does not foresee Dali's owner having success with a limitation proceeding.

"If you're talking about a situation where there is no power, where the vessel essentially is disabled because of the lack of power, then I can't think of any reason why the owner would not know or should not know that it wasn't being properly maintained," Carey said.

Davies added, "It's too early to say whether the petition would be likely to be successful, as much will depend on what are found to be the causes of the casualty. However, I must say that the way things look at present, it seems unlikely that a limitation petition will be successful."

The 2019 lawsuit Carey filed involved an Oregon man who was injured when he fell 25 feet when a rope ladder he was using on a ship owned by Grace Ocean Private Ltd broke. The suit was eventually settled.

Carey said he was reluctant to make any assumptions about Grace Ocean Private Ltd based on this incident.

Over the past decade, the owner of the Dali and the operator, Synergy Marine Group, have been sued a handful of times for worker injuries in US federal court. Most of the cases were settled, while one was dismissed.

When reached for comment, a Synergy Marine Group spokesperson referred BI to its latest press release, issued Thursday.

"We deeply regret this incident and the problems it has caused for the people of Baltimore and the region's economy that relies on this vitally important port," the statement said, in part.
