Matthew Stone, Awards-Winning IYC Yacht Broker on The Future of The Luxury Yacht Market

An Updated Conversation with Matthew Stone, IYC Yacht Broker of The Year

In August of 2021, we published an interview with an upcoming young IYC (International Yacht Company) yacht broker, Matthew Stone.  Since then, 17 months later, he won the prestigious IYC Broker of the Year Award, and of equal importance, helped open and lead the team of the new IYC Showroom at Shelter Island, Mission Bay, in San Diego.

In the meantime, we recently spoke with him again about his dramatic successes in the past 17 months.

Were you surprised when IYC chose you as Broker of The Year, and why did they choose you?

I knew many were in the conversation for Broker of The Year, but yes, I was surprised they chose me.  Yet, I did know that I sold 1100 feet worth of yachts. That means, basically, I sold many 150-foot yachts, 140 foot, and so on.  This is a good way of defining a parameter of success, because yacht pricing goes up and down, but the yacht dimensions stay the same.

In an earlier article about the yachting business, I read that selling a yacht is sometimes like selling a home. Can you discuss this a little?

While there are some parallels in the process of selling a yacht to that of selling real estate, the sales processes seem very different to me.  The complexity of buying a yacht is far more rigorous than a house. You're dealing with complex equipment surrounded by saltwater in most cases. And in many cases, we as salespeople, must remember that many of those who come looking for a yacht, are not always completely aware of what they want. We must peel the layers of the onion so to speak, but thankfully we know how to do it. We ask how often they will use it, if and how many members of the family will use the yacht, what experience they have in yachting, what they are looking for in a crew, things like that.

Another example is most people need real estate, you don't need a yacht, and for that reason alone, you may only have a handful of people that could be a prospective client for a particular yacht. Additionally, when purchasing a yacht, you are buying an ultimate luxury asset. Lastly, in my opinion, there is far more emotion when purchasing a yacht; it's a lifestyle, a lifelong dream, a passion, and at times there are even elements of impulse. But most people don't impulsively buy real estate.

How have you seen the luxury yacht market evolving one the past few years?

Yes, absolutely and in all facets of the industry, starting with construction methods and ending with the consumer. Technology advancements making yachts more efficient and safer. Diesel alternatives are allowing yacht owners to operate their vessels in an environmentally responsible way.  The consumer (and how they use the vessel) is also evolving with several new buyers entering the marketplace to get family, friends, and loved ones together in the safest environment possible.  Finally, where do you see the high-end yacht market growing or not in the next five years?

We no doubt see that the yachting market will continue to grow. We continue to see new buyers enter the marketplace who want to enjoy time with family, friends, and loved ones in a controlled environment. Experienced owners' needs and wants are evolving, and IYC will evolve with them.

_____________________________________________________ Article & Interview from August 2021

An awards-winning broker, Matthew Stone has devoted more than half his life to the yachting industry. Growing up in South Florida, Matthew realized early that he felt more comfortable on the water than on land, so his interest and comfort with sailing became his passion, which became his career. In 2016 that he moved from being a yacht captain to yacht broker, and in 2020, he was nominated for the coveted IYBA (International Yacht Broker’s Association) award for Outstanding Young Professional in Yachting . In both 2018 and 2019, he earned Broker of the Year.

His professional growth accelerated recently, as he now represents IYC, one of the largest and most reputable global brands in the yachting world. IYC  is one of the world’s largest international yachting companies with over 100 professionals based in 14 strategically located offices around the globe. IYC has expanded its geographic footprint in multiple countries and continually invests in the development of proprietary software solutions to deliver advice, insight, and support to yacht owners, buyers, charterers and captains worldwide. In addition, it has been announced IYC will expand its reach to Southern California very soon.

Mr. Stone, as an IYC team member, is deeply committed to his and his clients’ continuing yacht education and has a particular passion for new construction builds. He has toured and learned about new builds from many of the world’s leading international shipyards including Lurssen, Feadship, Heesen, San Lorenzo, Baglietto, and Benetti, all while sharpening his skill set to meet his clients’ growing requirements and interests. In media,  Matthew is a regular on the AWE network TV series, Selling Yachts and has been featured in a variety of industry magazine publications.

JustLuxe recently spoke with him about the future of the yacht industry, and how recent events have affected the industry.

JustLuxe: How has Covid affected the high-end Charter mega-yacht market?

Mr. Stone : Simply put, it has forced the charter market to restructure from charter agreements, sanitation protocols, crew requirements, and the list goes on and on. Fortunately, like most areas of the yachting industry, it has had a positive effect that has allowed for a safer and more controlled environment for our clients. We still face logistical challenges with travel restrictions that are continuously changing. With that said, we're happy to announce that so far in Q3, IYC has surpassed our last three fiscal years.

JustLuxe: In an earlier article about the yachting business, I read that selling a mega-yacht is a lot like selling real estate. Can you discuss this a little?

Mr. Stone : While there are definitely parallels in the process of selling a mega-yacht that would be comparable to selling real estate outside of that, it is notably different. The complexity of buying a yacht is far more rigorous than a house. You're dealing with complex equipment surrounded by saltwater in most cases.

Another example is most people need real estate, you don't need a yacht, and for that reason alone, you may only have a handful of people in the world that could be a prospective client for a particular yacht. Additionally, when purchasing a mega-yacht, you are buying the ultimate luxury asset. Lastly, in my opinion, there is far more emotion when purchasing a yacht; it's a lifestyle, a dream, a passion, and at times there are even elements of impulse. Most people don't impulsively buy real estate.

iyc yachts san diego

JustLuxe : How have you seen the luxury yacht market evolving one the past few years? Or have you at all?

Mr. Stone: Yes, absolutely and in all facets of the industry, starting with construction methods and ending with the consumer.

JustLuxe: Where do you see the high-end charter/mega yacht business going in terms of challenges and solutions?

Mr. Stone : For the charter market, we're going to continue to face logistical challenges with travel restrictions. From the client's, perspective make sure you're working with a reputable company like IYC that has a global presence, so you have the resources and information to make educated decisions on where, when, and which yacht you should charter to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience.

The biggest challenge we're facing on the sales side is inventory; it's scarce. But, again, having an experienced broker backed by a reputable brokerage house with a diverse database allows you to find opportunities that wouldn't normally be available.

iyc yachts san diego

JustLuxe :   Do you see the buyers of these vessels changing in terms of their needs and wants in yachts?

Mr. Stone :Yes, now more than ever. Clients' desires to be in congested ports are becoming less appealing with an increased appetite for remote destinations, impacting their needs and expectations of the yacht's capabilities.

JustLuxe: Finally, where do you see the high-end yacht market growing or not in the next five years?

Mr. Stone: We do not doubt that the yachting market will continue to grow. We will continue to see new buyers enter the marketplace who want to enjoy time with family, friends, and loved ones in a controlled environment. Experienced owners' needs and wants are evolving. New products are entering the market, appealing to a wider audience. Economists suggest that the economic expansion that started in mid-2020 will continue, the GDP has recovered to pre-pandemic levels. Our industry has adapted and evolved to the times and will continue to do so.

The UK government finally passes bill to send migrants to Rwanda. What took so long?

• Show more sharing options

The British Parliament has finally passed legislation to send some migrants to Rwanda , clearing the runway for flights this summer under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak ’s controversial plan aimed at deterring risky English Channel crossings by people desperate to reach the U.K.

A bill designed to unblock a plan beset by court challenges and legislative battles was approved early Tuesday, delivering what Sunak hopes will be a much-needed political victory and fulfill his pledge to “stop the boats.”

Human rights activists and migrants’ groups have vowed to continue the fight against the policy, which they say is unethical and inhumane.

Here’s a look at the plan and what it took to reach this stage.

WHAT IS THE RWANDA PLAN? The Rwanda plan is the British government’s response to the growing number of migrants from around the world — reaching a high of 46,000 in 2022 — who cross the English Channel from France to Britain in small boats.

Most people who arrive that way apply for asylum, and in the past many have been granted it. The Conservative government says these migrants should not be treated as genuine refugees because they did not claim asylum in another safe country, such as France, that they reached first.

In an attempt to deter people from making the risky journeys, the U.K. struck a deal with Rwanda in April 2022 to send migrants who arrive in the U.K. as stowaways or in boats to the East African country, where their asylum claims would be processed and, if successful, they would stay.

Human rights groups and other critics of the plan say it is unworkable and unethical to send migrants to a country 4,000 miles (6,400 miles) away that they don’t want to live in. No one has yet been sent to Rwanda, but Sunak has said the first flights will leave in July.

WHY D ID IT TAKE SO LONG TO REACH THIS POINT? The Rwanda plan was immediately met with legal challenges. The first removal flight was grounded at the last moment in June 2022 after a ruling from the European Court of Human Rights,

The case ultimately reached Britain’s Supreme Court, which dealt the government a defeat in November, ruling that the policy is unlawful because Rwanda is not a safe third country where migrants can be sent. Five justices unanimously said that “the removal of the claimants to Rwanda would expose them to a real risk of ill-treatment” because they could be sent back to the home countries they had fled.

The judges said there was evidence Rwanda had a culture that misunderstood its obligations under the Refugee Convention, was dismissive toward asylum-seekers from the Middle East and Afghanistan, and had little experience of the asylum procedures needed to handle the cases of migrants from around the world.

HOW DID THE U.K. GOVERNMENT RESPOND? Britain and Rwanda signed a treaty in December pledging to strengthen protections for migrants, partly by barring Rwanda from sending any migrants deported from the U.K back to their home countries. Sunak’s government argued the treaty allowed it to pass a law declaring Rwanda a safe destination.

The Safety of Rwanda Bill, which was passed Tuesday, pronounces the country safe , making it harder for migrants to challenge deportation and allows the British government to ignore injunctions from the European Court of Human Rights that seek to block removals.

If that fails to stop legal challenges, Sunak has said he would consider ignoring or leaving international human rights treaties including the European Convention on Human Rights. That move is backed by some members of Sunak’s governing Conservative Party, but would draw strong domestic opposition and international criticism. The only European countries that are not party to the rights convention are Belarus and Russia.

The Rwandan government insists it is “committed to its international obligations” and has been recognized by the U.N. and other international institutions “for our exemplary treatment of refugees.” Rwanda’s government says the country is ready to receive migrants from Britain, and has plans to build more than 1,000 houses, including recreational facilities, for the deportees.

HAVE OTHER COUNTRIES TRIED SIMILAR POLICIES? Britain is not alone in trying to control irregular migration. Much of Europe and the U.S. is struggling with how best to cope with migrants seeking refuge from war, violence, oppression and a warming planet that has brought devastating drought and floods.

A few countries have tried offshore processing of asylum seekers — notably Australia, which first sent migrants to the Pacific island nation of Nauru in 2001 and has operated an asylum-processing center there since 2012.

From 2013 to 2018, Israel had a deal with Rwanda to deport African migrants, until Israel’s supreme court declared it unlawful.

Denmark has moved away from a deal with Rwanda and wants to find a solution with fellow European Union countries.

“A British or Danish solution will solve a problem for the individual country,” Danish Immigration Minister Kaare Dybvad Bek told Danish broadcaster DR Tuesday. “But we believe a unified European solution will solve more problems, because you will also stop the people smugglers who today make billions from transporting people across the Mediterranean.”

Last year, Italy reached a deal with Albania for the Balkan country to temporarily house and process some of the thousands of migrants who reach Italian shores. There is a crucial difference from the U.K. plan: it’s not a one-way trip. Successful asylum-seekers would get to start new lives in Italy, not Albania.

Jan M. Olsen in Copenhagen, Denmark contributed to this report.
