The 2011-2012 IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph Volvo Ocean Race edition was developed to acknowledge the Volvo Ocean Race Challenge, which involved traversing the globe in nine legs and included six different vessels. As a sponsor of the challenge, it was only natural that IWC would release a commemorative timepiece. The IW390212 offers a bold stance on the wrist without weighing it down via a 45.4mm titanium case diameter and a thickness of just 14.5mm, which is relatively thin considering the broad stance of the case itself. A black carbon fiber dial complements the titanium case and black rubber strap bracelet nicely and is set with silver Arabic markers, luminous sword-shaped hands, and a bold red seconds hand. Produced in limited quantities, this is your chance to add a distinct used IWC to your watch box.

IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer”

Boat races and watches – a weird and yet seemingly ever-green combination. A few years ago, IWC joined the craze and has chosen to sponsor the Volvo Ocean Race, a remarkably challenging, round-the-world race that starts this October in Alicante, Spain, and terminates in Gothenburg, Sweden, in June 2015. With regards to IWC’s role more specifically, the brand is the event’s Official Timekeeper, partner of the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team, and sponsor of the 24-hour speed record.

And while that does seem like a total overkill for someone not that into the world of competitive sailing, this web of collaborations does result in a surprisingly restrained, yet sporty-looking chronograph that arguably makes a lot more sense than the sponsorship-frenzy behind it. The watch dedicated to the event is the IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer,” a limited edition of just 1,000 pieces.

LAUNCH IWC PORTUGUESE YACHT CLUB CHRONOGRAPH EDITION OCEAN RACER

It was almost three years ago that we discussed its predecessor (article here) , the 2011-2012 limited edition which featured a titanium case and carbon fiber dial; and it sure is interesting to see the 180 degree turn the new model shows when compared to the previous version. For 2014, IWC released a more mature, dare we say more down-to-Earth iteration, as the new IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer” sports a case in stainless steel, a clean-looking and highly legible white dial with beautiful blue indices and hands, as well as a splash of red here and there, for a bit sportier of an appearance.

The IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer” is a substantially sized watch, at over 45 millimeters wide and 14.5 millimeters thick, and it is rated to be water resistant to 6 bars – meaning that it should be able to resist any splashes of water it will be exposed to aboard a racing yacht, while it really is not suitable for swimming.

Functionality-wise, the latest model brings nothing new to the table, as it displays the hours and minutes, the running seconds on a sub-dial at 6 o’clock, the date, and features a flyback chronograph that measures up to 12 hours. Although we have seen this bi-compax layout in numerous other models from IWC, the sub-dial at 12 o’clock that comprises the displays for both the minutes and hours of the chronograph remains a neat detail, as it makes for a more balanced dial, without compromising functionality or legibility.

The movement inside is IWC’s in-house manufactured 89361 movement, and it is proudly displayed through the sapphire caseback – as opposed to being covered up by the engraved caseback we are used to seeing on so many of these limited edition watches. The movement features a flyback chronograph, IWC’s double-pawl winding system with a 360-degree rotor designed to resemble a ship’s wheel, and it offers an ample 68 hours of power reserve.

However, it is not necessarily the clever movement or the somewhat over-done marketing behind the watch that is really interesting, but what the styling of this 2014-2015 model indicates: the more restrained design – lacking all the carbon-fiber and titanium – shows that after recent years’ high-tech craze, the direction apparently is a more elegant aesthetic, one that is arguably more suitable to a mature brand like IWC. Nevertheless, technological advancements (i.e. the complex in-house movement) remain – they are just back “under the hood.”

IWC Launches Special Edition Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer”

The Volvo Ocean Race is an around-the-world yacht race held every three years. The current race began this month in Alicante, Spain. Over the next nine months, the crews will battle it out on four oceans taking them to five continents, and they will cover a total of 38,739 nautical miles, or nearly 45,000 statute miles. The longest leg stretches almost 7,800 statute miles from Auckland, New Zealand to Itajai, Brazil. While crossing the Southern Ocean, the yachts will face waves up to 100 feet in height and wind speeds reaching 70 miles per hour – conditions that make this one of sailing’s toughest challenges. The race will finish up in Gothenburg, Sweden in June, 2015.

This contest marks the second time IWC has served as Official Timekeeper, and to celebrate the event, the manufacture has created the new IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer,” reference IW390216, to be issued in a special edition of 1,000 pieces. IWC CEO Georges Kern said, “We’re dedicating this watch to the teams’ sporting spirit and their commitment to extreme racing.” IWC further strengthened its commitment to the event by consolidating its partnership with the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team, which is taking part in the race for the second time.

The Yacht Club Ocean Racer case measures 45.4 mm in diameter. The IWC manufacture caliber 89361 inside features a flyback function and aggregate timing of up to 12 hours, shown by an analogue display with two hands in a subdial at 12 o’clock. The case is water-resistant to 50 meters. This is the only IWC Portuguese watch with crown protection as well as luminous hands and indices. In an allusion to extreme sailing, the 360-degree rotor is modeled on a ship’s wheel. The IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer” is supplied with a black rubber strap featuring an alligator leather inlay.

IWC just launched a special edition of the Portuguese Yacht Club model for the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012. And you still have the chance to win a trip to the Volvo Ocean Race in Miami.

The Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph Edition Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 features some details, which have not yet been used in the ‘normal’ Portuguese Yacht Club collection . Its case, measuring 45.5 mm, is made of titanium (!!) and it has a black carbon fiber dial with unique markers. And IWC still makes beautiful photos…

Let’s have a look at the movement, which is very interesting. IWC’s caliber 89361 is a fly-back chronograph that measures times up to 12 hours. This is especially handy for sailing races, when longer times have to be measured than possible on most normal chronographs. Because of the fly-back function, the chronograph can be started immediately after it has been reset.

The titanium case measures 45.4 mm in diameter, is 14.5 mm thick and comes on a black rubber strap with folding clasp. Sapphire crystal on two sides and the one in the front has antireflective coating on both sides. The case is water resistant up to 6 bar or 60 meters deep. That should be more than enough for some one who plans to stay on board 😉
