Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled). The remainder of the APA is returned after charter.">Price Terms: Plus Expenses

Motor yacht HIGHLANDER stands out as one of the most iconic yachts and a true masterpiece. Crafted in 1986 by the renowned Dutch shipyard Feadship, it was meticulously tailored to the highest standards and conceived by Jon Bannenberg, the pioneer of contemporary yacht design, for the esteemed publisher Malcolm Forbes.

In 2014, this legendary yacht underwent a comprehensive refit and redesign, elevating its aesthetics to contemporary excellence. HIGHLANDER seamlessly melds Malcolm Forbes's unique character with Jon Bannenberg's groundbreaking design. Its towering, angular hull profile, its glass-encased Skylounge, and its raised bow were decades ahead of their time. It was purposefully customized for opulent entertainment and luxurious transatlantic voyages, boasting unparalleled grace and allure on its decks.

HIGHLANDER was meticulously designed for relaxation and amusement, offering an impressive array of amenities. The main salon welcomes guests with plush seating areas, a majestic piano, and a formal dining table accommodating up to 12 guests. Meanwhile, the upper deck's Sky Lounge presents a more relaxed atmosphere, complete with a bar, lounge seating, and a state-of-the-art home theater system.

Outside, HIGHLANDER's expansive decks provide ample space for sunbathing, socializing, and savoring breathtaking vistas. The upper deck is adorned with a Jacuzzi, wet bar, and a shaded dining area, while the main deck boasts an alfresco dining area and comfortable seating alcoves. For those seeking adventure, the yacht offers an array of water toys, including jet skis, kayaks, paddleboards, and more.

The top deck of HIGHLANDER has been recently extended forward, featuring newly integrated seating, sunbeds, and a bar. Additionally, a spacious Jacuzzi now overlooks the transparent ceiling of the Skylounge. The middle deck offers an expansive sunbathing area, perfect for indulging in a late afternoon nap beneath the warm sun.

Plan

Peter acquired many of his maritime skills at an early age while sailing and maintaining boats with family and friends in the North Eastern U.S. After college, Peter moved to the mountains of New Hampshire but couldn’t ignore his urge to try to make a living at sea. He attended the Chapman School of Seamanship in Florida in 1981, and upon graduation, began his career aboard a 141’ Feadship bound for Europe. Since then, Peter has held almost every crew position on yachts around the world, eventually becoming a captain for the first time in 1989. Peter has worked extensively on boats in The United States, the Bahamas, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean as both Mate and Captain, and was 1st Officer on board a 190’ Feadship during a circumnavigation in the mid-1990’s. He hopes that his experience, his excellent crew and the beautiful yacht Highlander can all help contribute to making this your best holiday ever!

Fanie has worked as an engineer on a number of yachts, and has extensively sailed the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Indian Ocean and Asia. He currently helds the Y3 engineering qualification and plans to progress up the ranks to obtain his Y2 certificate by the end of 2014. He has worked on various-sized private and charter yachts sailing the Mediterranean, Caribbean and New England areas. Joahn Odendaal

Johan hails from Upington, a town in the Kalahari Dessert, South Africa. He embarked on a yachting adventure in early 2013, after wanting a ‘sea change’ from his career in advertising. Malcolm Forbes’s Historic Yacht Is Reimagined

By Mitchell Owens

This article originally appeared in the July 2014 issue of Architectural Digest.

Golf may be the sport of choice for many businessmen, but Manhattan investment banker Roberto de Guardiola prefers open seas to fairways. It’s a passion that was kindled during his childhood in 1950s Cuba, where he frequently spent weekends at a Havana yacht club. "I remember being all of 11 years old when the commodore took a group of us boys on an overnight sailing trip," he recounts. "We all acted very brave—but none of us was really that brave."

Today the president of De Guardiola Advisors and his wife, interior designer Joanne de Guardiola, spend about ten weeks each year sailing to far-flung spots. And this spring marked the couple’s maiden voyage captaining one of the past half-century’s most celebrated yachts, magazine publisher Malcolm S. Forbes’s The Highlander, which they purchased in 2012 from Forbes’s heirs (the patriarch died in 1990). Technically the fifth Highlander —Forbes owned a series of boats with the same name— it was famously kitted out with padded-leather ceilings, Chippendale antiques, and paintings by Raoul Dufy and Thomas Gainsborough, prompting one newspaper to describe it as "a kind of monument to enlightened greed." On the boat, superstars—including Elizabeth Taylor, a close Forbes friend—preened and corporate titans and world leaders held court, munching on Ritz crackers topped with Beluga caviar after being welcomed aboard by a bagpiper. The top deck boasted a helipad, which occasionally came in handy for fetching guests, such as the time when Forbes dispatched his shiny gold helicopter to pick up a notable young couple who had missed the departure for a floating Fourth of July fiesta in New York Harbor.

Extravagances aside, Highlander is a true masterwork of boat design. Completed in 1985, it was devised by the late Jon Bannenberg, a dashing Australian responsible for a fleet of sublimely sculpted, startlingly innovative vessels, ranging from Saudi businessman Adnan Khashoggi’s Nabila to Oracle CEO Larry Ellison’s Rising Sun. "Owning a Bannenberg is like owning a house by Mies van der Rohe—it’s too much to resist," Joanne says. Yet even perfection can require some fine-tuning.

The couple undertook an 18-month gut renovation that, among other things, lengthened the hull to 162 feet 3 inches (adding just over 12 feet), while the boat’s name was shortened (no more "the"). Though the former intervention may strike Bannenberg buffs as heresy, Joanne explains that "Highlander didn’t really suit a family’s needs—it was built for corporate entertaining." But the mother of two and stepmother of two more is quick to add, "Everything I did had to be seamless with Bannenberg’s work, which is what attracted me to the boat in the first place."

Back in Forbes’s day, if guests wanted to swim, they had to jump over the side, but the new stern makes the water much more accessible. Steps now stretch across *Highlander’*s hindquarters like stadium seating—"They also invite you into the boat if you’re arriving by tender," Joanne says—and adjacent to them is a ten-by-five-foot hydraulic platform. "It’s the hottest toy in the world," the designer says of the feature, known as a transformer. "You can raise it for diving or just sit on it and watch the sunset."

Making Highlander friendlier also meant loosening up the formal layout. The main deck is now more open, all the better to admire the yacht’s architecture. Amidships, and spanning the boat’s full width, is the main salon. This living area is bordered on the bow by the master cabin, a cream-color haven that occupies the onetime observation salon; toward the stern are an open staircase and a media room. Six cabins for guests and five more for the crew are on the deck below, separated by the engine room.

The Iconic 164-foot Highlander was owned by Malcom Forbes but has undergone a complete refit

If these teak decks could talk. Paul McCartney tinkling the ivory keyboard. Elizabeth Taylor sunning herself on the top deck. Margaret Thatcher discussing world peace with Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. Harrison Ford taking a turn at the wheel.

Back in the 1980s, an invitation from Forbes magazine owner and consummate bon vivant , Malcolm Forbes, to join him aboard his beloved superyacht The Highlander was a reason for celebration.

And Forbes was a master when it came to celebrating. His first of many Fourth of July parties aboard The Highlander , anchored off Governors Island in New York Harbor, saw the world’s greatest movers and shakers piped aboard by tartan-clad Scottish bagpipers.

There on the yacht’s decks were the likes of Fiat boss Gianni Agnelli, Henry and Nancy Kissinger, David and Peggy Rockefeller and Brooke Astor. More than 150 Maine lobsters and 30 pounds of Scottish smoked salmon were reportedly flown in to feed the elite crowd.

During the five years Forbes owned the yacht, before his death in 1990, she traveled the globe; everywhere from then Communist China, to Bora-Bora, to Thailand, the Philippines and Alaska.

Launched in 1985, this was the last of five Forbes-owned yachts named The Highlander, after his family’s Scottish roots. But this one was unique. Designed by world-renowned designer Jon Bannenberg and built in Holland by Feadship , her dark green hull—said to be the color of dollar bills—stretched 162 feet bow to stern.

“She was nicknamed ‘The Ultimate Capitalist Tool’ for good reason,” the yacht’s current owner, New York-based interior designer Joanne de Guardiola told Robb Report . “Anyone who was anyone stepped aboard at some time during the ’80s.”

De Guardiola and her husband, investment banker Roberto de Guardiola, bought The Highlander from the Forbes estate back in 2012. And just as she’d done with the couple’s previous Feadship, the classic 159-foot Audacia , de Guardiola commissioned a top-to-bottom refit, this time with Florida’s Derecktor Shipyards.

“We had no thoughts of buying another yacht; we loved Audacia. But back in 2012, we had heard The Highlander was for sale and I went to take a look. She was not in great shape, but as a huge fan of Jon Bannenberg’s designs, and knowing her amazing history, we couldn’t resist,” she said.

The exhaustive, two-year refit took the steel and aluminum superyacht down to the studs. The yacht was extended by 12 feet to add a swim deck and rear “garage” for water toys; the top deck was lengthened. Effectively doubling its size, and the master stateroom was moved to where the observatory used to be.

The entire interior was redesigned and refitted with more modern materials and finishes. Out went the padded leather ceilings, the somber, dark green carpets and ornate Chippendale antique chairs; in went bleached-white Anigre paneling, wide-planked dark wood flooring, and brightly colored pop art.

One especially jaw-dropping feature de Guardiola created was the stunning, open-tread marble staircase from salon to upper deck. That and the new, glass-enclosed sky lounge with its disco vibe and blue onyx floor.

“The yacht didn’t really suit a family’s needs—she was really designed for Malcolm Forbes-style corporate entertaining,” says de Guardiola. “And if you wanted to splash in the water, you had to jump over the sides. Mr. Forbes didn’t like to swim.”

But de Guardiola is quick to add that her primary focus with the refit was evolving and not compromising Jon Bannenberg’s iconic design. “That’s what attracted me to the yacht in the first place.”

Mechanical improvements included the installation of Quantum zero speed stabilizers and full rebuilds for the trusty 900 hp Detroit Diesels. They still give the yacht a top speed of 18 mph, cruising at an easy 14 mph with transatlantic capability.

With kids in mind, Highlander —de Guardiola dropped the “the”—is brimming with water toys. Everything from Waverunners, Seabobs, banana floats and kayaks, to Malcolm Forbes’ much-loved, Ferrari-red 22-foot Donzi speedboat. Sadly, his other favorite, a custom-built Cigarette Racing powerboat, is no more. After being fully restored during the refit, the boat caught fire while Highlander was anchored off the Amalfi Coast in Italy.

“My husband was just heading off with our daughter and friends when the fire broke out,” de Guardiola says. “Everyone ended up in the water but were okay. It was one cool boat. It ran at over 60 mph.”

Since the refit, the de Guardiolas have taken friends and family all around the Mediterranean, hanging out at the Monaco Grand Prix, Cannes Film Festival, and hitting most of the Greek islands. Winters were in the Caribbean. Typically, they spent eight to 10 weeks a year aboard.

So why the decision to sell? De Guardiola says she’s looking for her next project: “As with my interior design work, I love the intellectual challenge of a makeover. It’s also time. We feel we’ve been good custodians. Now someone else should enjoy her.”

Highlande r is listed with IYC in Fort Lauderdale for $8.5 million.
