“In our company we measure our design objectives against Jack Hargrave’s dictum that, at the end of the day, the boat has to perform at sea. Everything else in the design process needs to bend to that single principle. It’s the right way to do it, and at Hargrave, it’s the only way to do it,” - Michael Joyce, CEO of Hargrave Custom Yachts

All For The Family
- By By Diane M. Byrne Photography by Scott Pearson
- Updated: September 24, 2015
When my grandmother baked cookies, she’d let me lick not just the bowl or the spoon, but both. That’s what grandmas do. Serve sweets. Take you to the toy store for a splurge. Let you stay up past midnight. Build a 94-foot yacht. What, your grandmother didn’t do that for you?
The nana who owns Adventure Us II did. She commissioned Hargrave Custom Yachts to build a Sky Lounge model so she could enjoy the yacht with three generations of family.
To be clear, most owners say that their yachts, regardless of size, are for enjoying family time. But Adventure Us II has the grandmotherly touches to prove it, considerations that go well beyond including a few Blu-ray discs of Disney movies.
“I want my children and grandchildren to look back someday and say the best times in their lives were aboard our family’s boat,” Grandma (who wants to be referred to only as Grandma) told Michael Joyce, CEO of Hargrave Custom Yachts.
That, essentially, was the blueprint for Joyce and his team: best times of their lives. And it’s pretty clear the team had some fun with the order.
Start with the granddaughters’ stateroom on Adventure Us II . What might appear to be an ordinary twin cabin in the belowdecks design drawing is actually one of the most unique arrangements afloat. The room is an L-shape, with two twin berths and a TV straight ahead of the threshold. Over the shoulder upon entering are a raised daybed and another wall-mounted TV for a lucky teenage friend. The decor is fittingly pink and coral.
The owner, with Shelley DiCondina of Yacht Interiors by Shelley, designed the remaining two guest staterooms (a VIP and a twin cabin that can convert to a queen) for specific family members. The use of makore wood (a warm, reddish tone) actually entices a wide smile here.
What grandmother encourages her family to take mobile phones and tablets anywhere? This one knew enough to roll with the times, which is why Adventure Us II has Wi-Fi on different decks, plus enough power outlets to charge the devices that a party of six typically takes along. Oh, and those TVs in the staterooms? They’re 46 inches, same as those on the aft deck. The salon has a 55-inch TV.
Not even Grandma wants eyes focused on a screen at all times, though. Enter the sky lounge, “a big party area,” as she puts it. That statement became reality at a recent party for 24 friends and family members. There are bar stools, L-shaped seating and teak tables, and the bar runs much of the length of the room — with a wine chiller, refrigerator drawers and stowage.
Because of her boat knowledge, and recognizing that simplicity is smart, Grandma asked that the master stateroom be on the main deck (aching joints do not get along with stairs). The master is set apart from all other spaces with art deco elements from the headboard to the sconces. Anyone who appreciates the idea of customizing a yacht will note the configuration: Few 94-footers are arranged with three closets in the owner’s suite. Fitting for the lady of the house, one closet is dedicated to her hats, purses and accessories. Given how much emphasis Adventure Us II puts on “us,” it’s nice to see Grandma devoting a special space to herself.
If you ask DiCondina about the yacht, she’ll tell you another item on board is the embodiment of the owner. It’s a striking glass etching in the dining room. Dating from the 1920s, it depicts a graceful, well-heeled Parisian woman. The entire dining room was designed around this etching.
It’s easy to sit here, look around, and be reminded of evenings spent at my own grandmother’s home. And to think this home away from home can go wherever family members wish. Some young girls are about to have the best times of their lives.

Capt. Mason Randall Raised in the Mountains of Colorado, Mason was brought up with a love of the outdoors and a deep curiosity for the natural world around him. He followed his passions of cycling, climbing and rafting, eventually leading him to Puerto Rico. Here he quickly discovered a whole new world of sailing and water sports and was instantly determined in learning everything related to this lifestyle. This new adventure took him to St. Thomas, where he worked as a First mate on a variety of charter vessels, soaking up all of the time he could get on the water and receiving his captain´s license. He ran commercial trips in the VI for two years before transitioning into yachting, where he worked as a chief officer and engineer and developed new skills and higher standards of service. After a year aboard super yachts, Mason developed a desire to transition back into the close-knit charter industry in the VI to share his “home” and love for it on a more personal basis with guests. Taking time to travel and really immerse himself into sailing, over the years Mason has covered most of the waters between New England and Panama. ´Adventure Us was fantastic! We did indeed have a great time! Mason and Zoe were great, food was awesome! First time on the BVI side so saw all the crowd favorites and they didn’t disappoint. Love the yacht...layout was fantastic, very spacious, new and clean! Can’t say enough good things about the trip, everyone had a great time! Thank you again!´
December 2023
´We just returned from an amazing week long trip on Adventureus. Zoe and Mason were both incredible and made the week one we´ll never forget! The meals that Zoe created were beyond delicious. They were some of the best meals I´ve ever had, we probably would only do two meals a day instead of three next time. We never wanted to skip a meal because every one was out of this world! Mason was a wonderful captain and Zoe a great second mate. We felt very safe and well taken care of the entire time. The boat was very spacious and comfortable with plenty of space to be in the sun or out of the sun. Zoe and Mason were funny and personable and really made the trip! We look forward to another trip on Adventureus in the future! Diane and Kevin Grierson Denver, Colorado´
´We recently vacationed on Adventure Us with two other couples throughout the US Virgin Islands. This yacht is brand new and absolutely beautiful. It has four guest cabins and feels so spacious. The best part though was our fabulous crew of Captain Mason and First Mate Zoe! Mason was so knowledgeable about the islands and the local lore and is an incredible sailor as well. Several of the days we spent hours sailing in the open waters. Zoe is a culinary school trained chef that made some of the most terrific meals for us. The three of us couples plan on chartering this same yacht again in two years to explore the British Virgin Islands.´
´We truly enjoyed our ´Adventure Us´ vacation hosted by Captain Mason, first mate and chef, Zoe! Zoe´s culinary meals kept us amazingly well fed and totally surprised at each meal. Mason was extremely knowledgeable on working the boat and pointed out many interests along our excursion. They both worked incredibly well together insuring safety and well being of their guests! Thank you both for one of our most treasured adventures! Tom and Laura Wolf´
Zoe - Your cooking was outstanding and utterly scrumptious. Thank you for your hard and often quite hot work keeping us all so well fed. I could eat that key lime pie and poké bowl forever, though not mixed together that would be gross. Again, thank you for tasty food and good jokes.

Captain: Mason Randall
Thomas, where he worked as a First mate on a variety of charter vessels, soaking up all of the time he could get on the water and receiving his captain's license. He thrives off of the "sea life", loves freediving, and giving his guests the chance to experience the same thrill he gets when enjoying a fresh catch!

Mason Randall
Raised in the Mountains of Colorado, Mason was brought up with a love of the outdoors and a deep curiosity for the natural world around him. He followed his passions of cycling, climbing and rafting, eventually leading him to Puerto Rico. Here he quickly discovered a whole new world of sailing and water sports and was instantly determined in learning everything related to this lifestyle. This new adventure took him to St. Thomas, where he worked as a First mate on a variety of charter vessels, soaking up all of the time he could get on the water and receiving his captain's license.

Taking time to travel and really immerse himself into sailing, over the years Mason has covered most of the waters between New England and Panama. He thrives off of the "sea life", loves freediving, and giving his guests the chance to experience the same thrill he gets when enjoying a fresh catch!";s:5:"photo";s:0:"";s:4:"size";s:1:"2";s:12:"captain_name";s:13:"Mason Randall";s:14:"captain_nation";s:2:"US";s:12:"captain_born";s:1:"0";s:15:"captain_license";s:0:"";s:18:"captain_yr_sailing";s:1:"0";s:21:"captain_yr_chartering";s:1:"0";s:17:"captain_languages";s:8:" English";s:9:"crew_name";s:0:"";s:16:"crew_nationality";s:0:"";s:12:"crew_license";s:0:"";s:15:"crew_yr_sailing";s:1:"0";s:18:"crew_yr_chartering";s:1:"0";s:7:"crewimg";a:1:{i:1;a:2:{s:3:"url";s:76:"https://www.centralyachtagent.com/yachtadmin/yachtlg/yacht8027/8027crew1.jpg";s:4:"desc";s:7:"Captain";}}}

Jeff followed his thirst for the ocean and developed his passion for spear fishing, scuba and snorkeling, sailing, free diving, lobstering, and enjoying marine life.

Captain Jeff has sailed all over the crystal blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. Wherever you want to sail to find your dream vacation Jeff will know the perfect spot, whether you want to be in the mix of the island, hiding with the locals, or even on a private island.

Sail away and Island hop with Captain Jeff.

Ashleigh grew up on the shores of a small beach town called Ballito, South Africa. During her junior and teen years, she swam breaststroke for Nationals as well as captained the South African Action Netball team while touring to Australia. When she is not in the pool or on the court you can find her free diving crayfish with her father, going hunting with her family in the bush, cooking food for friends and family, mountain biking, dancing, surfing, basically doing absolutely anything outside in the sunshine.

Ashleigh has a great love for people that fuels her love for food. She believes that when there is great food around there will always be people around. This is what draws her to cultures, cuisines, countries, and new sports around the world.

Her love for food is almost as great as her love for family and God. And so, with very little convincing needed and a lot of prayer, her father bought a 53Ft Catamaran and decided to sail across the Atlantic with her to fetch their new boat that awaited them all the way in St Thomas. Ignorance was bliss as they had never sailed before, but 2 months straight at sea during Covid was the best time of their lives. It brought Ashleigh into the world of yachts and sailing, and she has not left it since.

She has spent the last year (2021-2022) onboard a luxury superyacht as the soux-chef for a crew of sixteen as well as assisting in cooking for twelve guests when on charter. She did a dual season (Caribbean and Mediterranean) and enjoyed it thoroughly. Now she is excited to start this great journey where she can cook and bring people together as well as have fun on the water and bring adventure to anyone who joins her onboard.

- The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
- Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
- These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.
The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.
While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.
Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).
These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.
Nero: 90.1 meters
Price: From $497,000 a week (charter)
Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool
Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.
She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.
For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.
Victorious: 85 meters
Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter
Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom
Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.
For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.
She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.
Casino Royale: 72 meters
Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi
Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).
Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.
However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.
Talisman C: 70.6 meters
Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter)
Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library
Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.
Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.
Joy: 70 meters
Price: From $650,000 a week
Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor
Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.
There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.
Triumph: 65.4 meters
Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter
Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat
This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.
She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.
Seanna: 64.5 meters
Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter)
Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool
The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.
Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.
There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.
Come Together: 60 meters
Price: $65,000,000
Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna
Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.
The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.
The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

I escaped from Haiti in the throes of gang violence. The people there need our help.
An island nation is now gripped by murderous, lawless criminals, as the world refuses to get its hands dirty. foreigners and volunteers are forced to find their way out, with no help from embassies..
This is not an adventure story. It may sound like one , with eight Americans, one Frenchman and one Canadian racing in the dark to a thrumming helicopter, as a U.S congressman yells “Go! Go! Go!’’ and the blades lift the bird into the Haitian sky, amid prayers that violent gangs don’t fire bullets in its direction.
But there is nothing adventurous about it. An island nation is now gripped by murderous, lawless criminals , as the world refuses to get its hands dirty. Foreigners and volunteers are forced to find their own way out , with no help from their embassies. And trapped in the middle are innocent civilians, millions of them, including 60 precious children at the orphanage I have operated for the last 14 years.
It was from that orphanage that 10 of us had to rush away last week and wait for hours, at a secret location, for a helicopter to come in the wee hours of the morning. It was a stealth operation, replete with mishaps, equipment changes and communication issues. It took off in the dead of night, with the passengers piled in like a rugby scrum. Thirty minutes later, when U.S. Rep. Cory Mills , a combat veteran, said we could take a deep breath because “we just left Haitian airspace," a cheer went up.
But my wife and I felt a gut punch.
How could we be relieved to be out of Haiti when our kids were still there? How could we be happy and heartbroken at the same time?
This not an adventure story. It’s a tragedy.
And for the sake of innocent children, something has to change.
Why we were at the Have Faith Haiti Mission
Let me rewind. As some of you already know, I have been going to our orphanage, the Have Faith Haiti Mission, since January 2010 , after the terrible earthquake that killed 3% of Haiti’s population and left more than 10% homeless .
Our place is an oasis for children who have been orphaned, abandoned, lost or given over by relatives due to sickness, homelessness or extreme poverty. We have clean dormitories, a three-story school, a playing field, medical care, and a large, working kitchen. I visit every month to oversee the operations. And periodically, we take guests and volunteers with us .
On this month’s trip, my wife and I were joined by several others, including an artist from Seattle, a psychologist from California, a van designer from France and the mother of one of our staff members from Michigan. Most of these people had never been to Haiti. One had never been out of the country. We also had a master builder from Florida, a retired Canadian plant manager and several child specialists already on-site.
Not long after we arrived, the gangs that have ruled Port-au-Prince for the past few years revved their violence to a screaming level. With Haiti’s prime minister, Ariel Henry , out of the country seeking international help, the gangs took dramatic steps to prevent his return. They engineered a massive prison break from Haiti’s most notorious jail , freeing thousands of convicted murderers and kidnappers. They took control of the airports and the water ports. They already ruled the roads. And the border to the Dominican Republic remained firmly shut.
Which meant absolutely nobody – including the prime minister – was coming in.
And nobody was getting out.
'We should pray for a helicopter'
“What are we going to do?” I heard that constantly from our guests, who were brave and patient but rightfully worried that a planned six-day trip was rapidly turning into something dire. My wife and I had been at the orphanage in the summer of 2021 when then-President Jovenel Moise was assassinated . The country shut down and there was violence everywhere.
But even then, flights in and out of Haiti resumed within a matter of days. This time, with gangs surrounding the airport, clashing with police and promising "civil war," the skies were empty.
Meanwhile, every night there were reports of police stations burning, ministry buildings destroyed, banks raided, bodies left dead in the streets. Our children do their nightly devotions in a small gazebo; this month, they sang their prayers with gunfire in the background.
Seeking counsel, we called the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince. We were told to fill out numerous forms (we did), to stay put (what choice did we have?), that there was “nothing we can share” and that “discussions are being held at the highest level.” We heard this almost daily – until the morning we woke up to learn that all nonessential U.S. Embassy personnel had been evacuated in the middle of the night .
It was pretty clear: We were on our own.
One night at dinner we were saying a traditional prayer of thanks and protection. One of our guests said, “Let’s be more direct. We should pray for a helicopter.”
More than just a painting
Now, the project that brought down some of our guests, including the artist (Lesley) and the French van designer (Kim), was a giant mural to be painted on two orphanage walls. It was Lesley’s beautiful design of children, families, landmarks and nature, interspersed with the messages we are trying to teach our kids: faith, sharing, love, culture. It was meant to be a weeklong project for our children to create.
But as days passed, and the outside news worsened, that mural became more than art. It became a therapy wall. Our visitors picked up paintbrushes and joined the children in spreading the yellows, oranges and turquoise blues, sweating under the hot sun for hours while silently wondering how they could get out, and when they would see their families again. What else could we do?
Finally, one morning, through a connection I have in Haiti, we tried a hastily organized escape with a relief helicopter. Driving away in the predawn light, we were told to arrive at a designated spot, carrying one bag a piece, and wait on a hillside for the chopper to arrive.
We waited. The sun rose higher. We waited. It never came. An hour later, we threw our bags back in the cars and hastily returned to the orphanage.
Which is when we experienced a remarkable thing. Our kids, aware that we were trying a quick evacuation, embraced us and said, “We’re so sorry” and “We wish you had made it out.”
Here were children, some as young as 11 or 12, feeling sorry for us because we couldn’t exit the violence. Yet they can never exit the violence. They can’t get anywhere. Our children have not set foot outside the orphanage walls in nearly three years. Not a single trip to a park, or to the beach, or for an ice cream. Total lockdown.
Yet here they were, feeling sorry for us?
'We will get you out'
The story took a major turn when some friends named James and Theresa contacted their congressional representative, Lisa McClain , of Michigan’s 9th District. They told McClain of our situation, and implored her to help. Shortly thereafter, she phoned me. I’d never met McClain. But she said, “I know the right person. We are going to get you out.”
That led to a call to Mills, a congressman from Florida who served with the Army's 82nd Airborne Division and spent years fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. We spoke. He said the same thing: “We will get you out.” It wasn’t an official effort. In fact, both lawmakers told me not to expect any help from the government.
When I asked Mills why he would do this then as a private individual, and not seek any money for the effort, he said, “Because I believe that’s my job. To protect U.S. citizens.”
Within half an hour, a plan was hatched.
The original idea was to fly in very early in the morning, with a 12-person helicopter. Our group was packed and eager to go. But mechanical problems, a bad generator and equipment changes delayed the expected arrival from 4 a.m. to closer to 6 or 6:30 a.m. As I watched the clock tick away, I held my head in my hands. I realized this was too risky. By that hour, the sun was rising, as were the chances the helicopter would be seen, possibly shot at, or at the very least filmed by curious onlookers who would then post it to the internet where rumors would swirl and could put our orphanage in danger.
“I’m sorry,” I finally told them. “You can’t come.”
Mills’ crew was taken back. They had been heading our way for 24 hours and were about to take off from a nearby island. They insisted that our safety was at stake. But our group agreed: If it endangered the children, we weren’t doing it.
Reluctantly, Mills and his crew stood down. They would wait a day and try again.
No one knew the craziness that would happen in the next 24 hours.
A gut-wrenching goodbye
On Monday March 11, during the day, our group busied itself with putting final touches on the mural. The hours seemed to creep along. We painted. We held the kids. We looked at our watches.
Working with Mills, I had identified a secret, hopefully secure location, and before the sun set and curfew kicked in, we gathered the children and said goodbye. There were long hugs and a lot of tears, because the truth was, we didn’t know how soon we could get back. I would liken this to saying goodbye to your kids for summer camp, except with summer camp you don’t worry they are going to be attacked or have to flee.
The tragic truth is, even if we had a helicopter that could fit 60 children, no one would let our kids out. Haiti would declare it illegal. The United States wouldn’t sanction it. The Dominican Republic would send them back.
There is a word for when you can’t remove children from danger, no matter how much every fiber of your being wants to. It’s called hopelessness.
'We have to go now!'
Finally, night arrived. Mills’ team was to pick us up at 3 a.m. Tuesday March 12 . Our group was exhausted from the near miss the night before and the sheer weight of the stress-filled days. By 10 p.m., sitting at the safe location, we were all falling asleep.
We decided not to fight it, but to rest for a few hours, set our alarms for 2 a.m., wake up, get in position and be ready to go.
For me, it was the first sleep in two days. I dropped into a stupor, only to be nudged by my wife a few hours later. “Your phone is pinging,” she said. I grabbed it. It was just before 2 a.m. and there was a message from Mills: “Are you getting these communications?”
I flipped back and saw four missed messages, saying they were coming early. “Be there in 30 minutes” then “Be there in 20 minutes” then “10 min out.” I leaped up and stumbled through the dark, trying to find a light switch and yelling to the others, “We have to go now!”
Then Mills pinged me and said, “No bags. Just passports.” The group, wiping eyes and grabbing shoes, had to find their papers, leave everything else and run outside.
Will Republicans ever care? Trump keeps praising dictators like Hitler and Kim Jong Un
Moments later, we heard the thwap-thwap-thwap of the rotors and someone inside the building flicked the lights to guide the helicopter in. We saw its silhouetted form land on the ground and two men jump out, screaming, “Go! Go! Go!” We raced under the blades, piled into the open door, and found space wherever we could, falling on top of each other.
“All 10 here?” “Everybody in?” “Everyone OK?” “Everyone got passports?” “GO!”
It took 67 seconds from touchdown to liftoff, and next thing we knew, we saw the lights from Port-au-Prince beneath us. Everyone held their breath in fear of gunshots. Soon we were in near total darkness, and nobody spoke.
What, and who, we left behind
I could share with you the crazy rest. How, while we were in the air, Henry, the prime minster, resigned, pushing the nation into further turmoil. Or how the helicopter began to leak hydraulic fluid and by the time we made a landing in a near-deserted airstrip, it could no longer fly. I could share the four-hour van ride in the darkened countryside to try to reach a major airport.
But all that makes this sound too movie-like, and please know this is not the movies. This is not a happy ending simply because eventually, in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, we landed home in Michigan, grimy, exhausted and spent.
I'm a Christian pastor. I won't lie to my son about our history and white heritage.
The more important truth is that thousands of other foreigners like us are still trapped in Haiti, and when a U.S. State Department spokesperson said there would be no evacuation attempts because, “for four years we’ve been telling people not to go to Haiti,” it made it sound as if those people were ignoring warnings and scheduling their honeymoon at a Club Med.
I promise you the overwhelming majority of outsiders in Haiti are there to feed children, provide water, offer medical help or administer aid. These are brave people who went to Haiti despite the danger because to never travel anywhere risky means leaving all the risk to the people who live there, and certain people can’t accept that. It doesn’t mean they should be ignored.
This tale is far from over
Look. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again . Haiti is not just some little country half a world away. It’s less than two hours from Miami. It’s in the heart of the Caribbean, a region where destabilization would be a major catastrophe for America.
And don’t forget, we have history there. We occupied Haiti from 1915-34 . We put its money in our banks . We basically wrote its constitution. We are vested in the area, and our recent hands-off policy is partly to blame for the elevation of a handful of street gangs into a mini-mafia that now runs the country.
Relying on Kenyan soldiers to fix things seems as much of a moonshot as asking seven disparate Haitian groups to come up with a suggested prime minister (something, despite a 24-hour deadline last week, they still haven’t done). Yet that, and sending some money, is pretty much America’s plan for now.
It won’t be enough. The rampant murders, burnings, displacements of entire neighborhoods and civilians hiding in terror will continue.
I learned a valuable lesson while trapped last week. There is no feeling to match the stealing of your freedom. The denial of your right to leave. It is a hollow in your soul. It changes how you breathe. You go through the five stages of grief – denial (This can’t be!) anger (How can they do this?), bargaining, depression and, finally, glum acceptance.
For the 10 of us, there was an uplifting conclusion, a brave and fortunate escape. For the children and staff at our orphanage – and for the millions of innocent Haitians throughout the country – there is no happy finish. They are without safe shelter, starving, without water, without fuel, without medicine, praying for someone to save them.
So, no, this is not an adventure story. It is a catastrophe. A massive cry for help. And it cannot continue to be ignored.
