Summary Analysis of the Design Ratios for the  Aphrodite 101

eBook: How to Avoid Buying the Wrong Sailboat

1. A Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of 20.8 suggests that, in the right hands, the Aphrodite 101 will have enough performance to leave most other sailboats of similar waterline length well astern.

2. A Ballast/Displacement Ratio of 57.0 means that the Aphrodite 101 will stand up well to her canvas in a blow, helping her to power through the waves.

3. A Displacement/Length Ratio of 152, tells us the Aphrodite 101 is clearly a light displacement sailboat. If she's loaded with too much heavy cruising gear her performance will suffer dramatically.

4. Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio of 21.6 suggests that crew comfort of a Aphrodite 101 in a seaway is similar to what you would associate with the motion of a coastal cruiser with moderate stability, which is not encouraging news for anyone prone to seasickness.

5. The Capsize Screening Formula (CSF) of 1.7 tells us that a Aphrodite 101 would be a safer choice of sailboat for an ocean passage than one with a CSF of more than 2.0.

More about the Aphrodite 101...

The Aphrodite 101 is a 9.9-meter (32.5-foot) monohull sailboat that combines performance, beauty, and simplicity. It is a fractional sloop with a single-spreader mast and a large mainsail. The boat has a fin keel with a spade rudder, and can be steered by a tiller or a wheel. The boat has a displacement of 2.8 tons and a ballast of 1.2 tons, giving it a good stability and responsiveness. The boat can reach speeds of up to 7 knots in light winds and up to 12 knots in strong winds.

The Aphrodite 101 was originally built by Bianca Yachts in Denmark, but later production was taken over by Copland Boats in Sweden and Ott Yacht in Germany. Nearly 500 boats have been built to date, with over 140 sailing on Lake Constance in Germany.

The Aphrodite 101 is ideal for recreational sailors who enjoy racing, cruising, or day sailing. The boat is easy to handle, even single-handedly, and can cope with various weather conditions. The boat is also suitable for family sailing, as it has enough space and comfort for four people to sleep on board.

Accommodation The Aphrodite 101 has a simple but functional interior layout that maximizes the use of space. The boat has four berths: two in the forepeak cabin and two in the saloon. The saloon also has a folding table that can seat four people for dining or socializing. The galley is located on the port side of the saloon, and has a sink, a stove, and some storage space. The navigation station is located on the starboard side of the saloon, and has a chart table, an instrument panel, and some drawers. The head is located aft of the navigation station, and has a toilet, a sink, and some lockers.

The Aphrodite 101 does not have any other versions or options for the accommodation layout. However, some owners have customized their boats by adding or removing bulkheads, cabinets, or cushions to suit their preferences.

Hull and Deck The Aphrodite 101 has a sleek and graceful hull shape that gives it an attractive appearance and a good performance. The hull is made of fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP), which is strong, light, and durable. The hull has a white gelcoat finish with blue stripes along the waterline and the sheerline.

The deck of the Aphrodite 101 is also made of FRP with a non-slip surface. The deck has a large cockpit that can accommodate up to six people comfortably. The cockpit has two lockers for storing sails, lines, or other equipment. The cockpit also has an outboard motor bracket on the transom for mounting an auxiliary engine.

The mast of the Aphrodite 101 is deck-stepped and made of aluminum alloy. The mast has one set of swept-back spreaders that support the shrouds and the forestay. The mast also has internal halyards that run through exit boxes on the mast base.

Review of Aphrodite 101

Basic specs..

The Aphrodite 101 is equipped with a finn keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel.

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated. As the surface of a finn type keel is just a fraction of the total wet surface, the difference between an iron keel and a lead keel can in reality be ignored for cruising yachts.

Aphrodite 101 can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.65 - 1.75 meter (5.41 - 5.71 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar diesel engine at 9.0 hp (6 kW), which gives a max speed about 4.3 knots.

The transmission is a shaft drive. A shaft drive will in the long run require less maintenence than other types of drive e.g. a sail drive.

The fuel tank which is made of stainless steel has a capacity of 38 liters (10 US gallons, 8 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Aphrodite 101 is 1.64, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.9 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Aphrodite 101 is about 128 kg/cm, alternatively 720 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 128 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 720 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

What is Relative Speed Performance?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 24m 2 (258 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

YACHT review of the Aphrodite 101

The market situation.

When it comes to the denomination of the Aphrodite 101, shipyard owner Antonius Ott is certain: "It's clearly a Catholic boat." Pause. Because it runs on water? Or is it a church boat, is Aphrodite 101 even baptised with holy water? "Well," he grins, "you just have to do everything on your knees." Because it is only possible to linger while bent over, sitting or in the penitent position. One metre and thirty-six centimetres can be measured from the floorboards to the cabin ceiling.

Owner Klaus-Peter Stengele doesn't mind; he won two 101 World Cups with his 2002 boat number 471. On his boat, we first record 7.4 knots in a room wind and then pinch height like a sharp cruiser: at just under 6 knots speed, a turning angle of less than 80 degrees, without rudder pressure. Despite the expected heeling.

Various shipyards built Aphrodite 101

With these characteristics, the Aphrodite 101 met and still meets the exact specifications of sailing enthusiast Jörgen Juul Rasmussen († 2004). He commissioned the designer duo Jan Kjærulff and Paul Elvstrøm to create his dream boat, which sailed well and was easy to handle. The 9.50 metre Elvstrøm 95/Mungo was built in Halmstad, Sweden, in 1976. There, the shape was immediately lengthened by 60 centimetres and named 101 for the now 10.10 metre length. In order for the ship to fit into the Danish handicap rules, the extension was again reduced by 15 centimetres, but the name remained. John Macintosh's shipyard then built the first 15 units on the Isle of Wight, while the Bianca shipyard in Rudkøbing laminated many more until it went bankrupt in 1987. Bach's boatyard in Farsø, Denmark, continued production.

In 1994, the mould and rights went to Ott Yacht in Meersburg. This is where the construction numbers 400 to the current 494 were created, because the 101 is still being built. With the Lake Constance production, a 150 per cent headsail became class-compliant, and backstays have made the higher forestay tension possible ever since. Klaus-Peter Stengele also uses them for his self-tacking jib, "it depends on the luff curve, some profiles need it".

The Aphrodite 101 is still under construction

Antonius Ott, on the other hand, is increasingly delivering new boats without backstays. "The püttinge are available and retrofitting is easy, but today many people don't know what they could do with them," he comments on the change he has observed over several decades. "I sell half of the ships twice, a quarter even three times," Ott explains the additional importance of his shipyard as a hub. "I assess the boats I'm selling and tell them what needs to be done to sell them. I do the work in advance and only when the overhauled boat is sold does the previous owner receive the proceeds minus refit costs and margin."

Ott has built seven new ones over the past ten years. "Of course, the 101 is a plastic bucket," Ott admits realistically, "but at least it has established itself on Lake Constance like a Dragon, a 30 or even a 45-series warping cruiser." Kjærulff had indeed designed a largely timeless crack that appeals.

Class chairman Olivier Grobet, 55, had fulfilled this longing and ordered a new one, his SUI 487 "Fantasea" from 2010. "I had always seen the 101, and I liked its elegance. I had also looked at a Dynamic 35, but it would have been too long for our berth. An X-99 would have fitted, and it would have been a space miracle compared to the 101. But I was told that she would only be easy to handle with a large crew," says Grobet, explaining his considerations.

Refurbishments and refits possible at the shipyard

He had been told that the 101 was the more good-natured ship, and that was true. Operating the boat in pairs works, especially when manoeuvring in harbours, "sailing alone would also work". However, since the water level on Lake Constance has been fluctuating more strongly over the summer, the 1.70 metre draught is proving to be an obstacle regionally. Olivier Grobet is completely satisfied with his boat, but has improved the lower deck furling jib system: "There is now a double-cardanic deck passage from Bartels. It's tight and no longer makes the boat lose sleep in strong winds."

The jetty neighbours Helen and Norbert Scherrer came across a berth by chance 20 years after obtaining their sailing licences and were looking for a suitable yacht. "We're definitely not good sailors," Helen is certain. "At first I also said no, I have other hobbies. But now I'm completely thrilled with our 101, it's great." They had given the privately purchased second-hand boat to Ott Yacht for a refit, which included new upholstery, a carbon main boom and a gennaker. "We unpacked it for the first time today and flew it." It's a pity that there are dog berths instead of top-accessible forecastle boxes, and that the water stands in the cockpit seat edge when the boat is in position, which can only be channelled by tacking or scooping. They took part in the class association's touring week, "very nice people", comments Norbert.

And another 101 enters the harbour, an older unit with a Treadmaster coating. The four owners are refitting it themselves, piece by piece, and that too is apparently working. Antonius Ott comments on used boats: "Bianca ships usually have osmosis. We regularly refit them, and the watertight epoxy makes them better than new ships."

The Aphrodite 101 is "not a caravan at sea"

"The year of manufacture is not so important," advises Klaus-Peter Stengele. "Biancas are a bit lighter, but often have a creepy flock coating on the inside, which is a huge mess to remove." Further tips: "The later-approved two-gear winches are worthwhile, existing spinnaker gear is good if you like racing." On Bianca yachts, check the front bulkhead and the arched forward hatch, for which there is no replacement. Possible leaking rudder shaft guides and soft foredecks, railing posts and foresail rails should be noted. Older boats have a permanently installed table in the saloon, which tends to get in the way, especially when the saloon is extended by two inserts to form a large double berth, which is 2.00 metres wide at the top and 1.42 metres wide at the bottom.

In its 1979 test, YACHT wrote: "The Aphrodite 101 is above all a thoroughbred sailing boat, not a 'caravan at sea'." Even on longer trips in the North Sea or Baltic Sea, you will be satisfied with it. Klaus-Peter Stengele's conclusion today: "The 101 is a very, very good boat for couples or small families on a budget."

1984 Aphrodite 101

  • Description

Seller's Description

Aphrodite 101, 1984 fractionally rigged racing sloop.

Built in Denmark to a design by Paul Elvstrom and Jan Kjaerluff. 32.5 ft by 8 ft by 5.75 ft.

Mass Bay PHRF 144.

Many details about the type are at https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/aphrodite-101 .

We sailed out of Boston for years doing many fleet races and double handed distance races.

Many trophies demonstrate the boat is competitive.

Often cruised to Maine and Rhode Island en-route to/from regattas.

The headroom is 4.5 ft only.

Small and fast.

Two suits of sails, dacron cruising and carbon racing including three kites, one racing and two cruising.

Rebuilt two years ago Yanmar 1GM.

New running rigging this year.

Standing rigging replaced 10 years ago.

Bottom stripped and epoxy barrier coated two years ago.

Interior refurbished recently, continuing.

Everything goes with the boat, anchors, safety gear, misc equipment.

Call and ask for a list on inventory and a picture collection.

Reason for selling is that we live on Cape Cod where the water is too shallow and the racing too far away.

We have hardly used the boat for six years and for three years she was in dry storage.

You should sail her!

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

First boats were built by Langeland Yacht Service. Later Bianca Yachts built some 360 APHRODITE 101’’s up until the late eighties. Some of these were exported to other european countries, and a few to the US. Also known as BIANCA 101.

While I'm not in the market for one, I have always been intrigued by the 101; does anyone here have experience with the design ? I know about the One Design competition and 'narrow is best post '79 Fastnet' etc, but it seemed an interesting boat.

I can nearly offer 2p worth, in that we raced under CHS (now IRC) against one in our old but competitive 3/4 Tonner in early 90's, and we only just had an edge on her. Also, the owner of Dolphin Sails had one for many years. I can also confirm that they do look a picture under sail. So I get the impression that they're very much a 'sailor's yacht' as they must have very limited accomodation - low freeboard, no coachroof, narrow beam.

Thanks for that, I always thought she was a real sailors' boat, though I went on one at Earls Court when they first came out, and by my standards the interior was surprisingly good, though that's hardly the point. I'm still waiting to hear from someone who's sailed one ! And what happened to the production moulds ?

  • 28 Sep 2010

If you phone Dolphin Sails and ask for Matthew Vincent (the A101 owner's son) he'll give you the griff, as I've seen him sailing her with his dad. He's a nice bloke - I say that as one who bought sails from him, including a few for the aforementioned 3/4 Tonner - and I'm sure he'll be helpful.

Aphrodite 101 owner remarks Hello: We have an Aphrodite 101 in Boston, MA. Over our five years of ownership we have done a number of double handed races, some fleet racing and logged a few thousand NM cruising. Our opinion, a stunning boat in every respect. We first saw one in Bellingham WA as we prepared for a charter in the San Juan Islands. Thought it was a darn nice looking boat. At the time we didn't have a plan to buy a boat. A little while later, we sailed a Beneteau 351 from Boston to Puerto Rico. The fat B convinced us to buy a narrow boat. Not long after the delivery, we found our boat and bought her. Sailed her a lot in all kinds of weather. More to follow. Norman Martin Boston

  • 27 Apr 2011

Norman, at last someone with first hand experience of the boat. Is she a 'wet' boat in a breeze ? She just has to be a good performer with that shape & those looks, what would you regard the ideal number of crew for racing ? And how many could comfortably cruise in a 101, I'm guessing 4 adults would be about right ? Something tells me you don't miss having three double aft cabins as some 'boat show boats' of the same length seem to think essential ! I always thought she looked a real sailor's boat, and should have been more popular in the UK.

armchairsailor

http://www.aphrodite101.info/about.htm This should tell you what you need to know. PP in last month's PBO said the Sigma 33 sailed past the things, but I can't imagine by much. I'd have one, but I doubt they'd be particularly "family orientated".

I wonder how the build quality compares - a friend did a lot of racing in Fastnets etc in a Sigma 33, his tales combined with other things I've heard don't make the Sigma out to be the toughest boat in the world... I haven't sailed either, but I'd like to think I'm enough of a sailor that I'd go for the 101, then I don't have a large family to spoil the equation !

Signed Out

I very nearly went for one, but realised it would stretch my budget too much, and would end up blighting my idea of what is very much still my ultimate "dream boat". Still being made in Germany, expensive. Look tiny for a 33 footer, and very skinny. I believe what I hear about them being an upwind boat, looking at them, and having seen them sailing in the past. If a Sigma 33 can pass one, I would suspect it's got a larger crew, and further round on the wind when it does so- 101s are not what I would suspect to be a boat for grunts on the rail- no leverage! For a nice bit of proper offshore passage-making, I'd snatch one up in a flash (pending pennies of course). As for build quality, the one I looked over closely seemed very strong and well put together, just old and hard lived.

Aphrodite 101 owner remarks, continued Aphrodite is dry enough in a breeze. The bow overhang angle contributes to a dry sail. We get water back to the mast often. The hatch does not slide into a garage yet we seldom ship water there. Actually, I don't ever recall water running in throughb the hatchway. More to follow.

The 101 Experience I've been an owner since 1979 of hull # 138, since new. So far, I've done more than 20,000 nm along the eastern US seaboard and down to Bermuda and back five times in the biennial Newport-Bermuda Race in the Double-Handed Division. Over the years, I've increased the roach on the mainsail to great advantage, as well as the non-overlapping jib. Despite the years, we still manage to be in the top quartile in all races, course and distance, every year, under IRC, ORR and US PHRF handicap rules. Last fall we hit 17+ knots downwind in 40 knots of breeze! Amazing! She's also seen 6 meter seas in the North Atlantic, and I've never had a problem with her. Even solo sailed her from Bermuda to New England in 2008 (700 nm), a delightful trip. Would be glad to answer anyone's specific questions! A fabuous design, and exceptional build quality.

I have been looking into an 101 as well and just returned from Denmark where I have seen about 30 of them (they look gorgeous!), but people in NL (who seem to like much fatter boats with an excess of bathroom and kitchen facilities) discourage it as they consider it to be rather uncomfortable (and some even suggest unsafe) on the choppy North Sea and slow downwind. Any thoughts on this? How does it behave down wind in relation to more modern designs? Bolivar

101 - A Classic A real sailor's boat, so not a lard-a*se with a treble aft cabin & gold plated baths in the back ! You might get a bit wet, but it will be fun & fast; unsafe ? No way. The 101 was arguably the best ( sailing, not commercial wise ) of the competition winners for a One Design to prove herself after the 1979 Fastnet disaster - see 'Heavy Weather Sailing', and a forumite from the U.S. has sailed many ocean miles. A fuller design aft does help stability running in big waves, but also leads to prising the rudder out of the water if & when she gripes up and broaches. When I win the lottery, a 101 will be one of my 'fleet', and there won't be any twin ruddered 'designs' !

There is a yinoyin sitting about 50 yards away just now, it is very much narrower than my recollection, the cockpit looks distinctly uncomfortable with skinny flat coamings and seats much to narrow for my only slightly larger than average size arse; the tiller is only a few inches from the edge of the seat so again you would have to be the build of a racing cyclist to waggle it. The flush deck looks racy all right but the space under it is not much bigger than a decent coffin. I would also have some reservations about the long lead torpedo on the bottom of a stick that is under them, not likely to give much lift but very likely to harvest kelp. It is a quirky day sailer, the marine equivalent of a Morgan three wheeler without the comfort: but this is an old git talking, when I first saw one I thought it was just so sporty. If you have any specific questions I can stroll over and look at it again.

I have a fat arz & when I went to view one was comfortable both in the cockpit and saloon. Not huge headroom, but no coffin. You been inside it? And if it's got a lead torpedo, it aint standard; I've heard of one with this adaptation, but others have a swept fin as built. Were you insulted by seajet's reference to wide bumd boats? Cos you are quite sure about their lackings.

I will go for the 101 and it will probably be dry compared to my FX One, so no wet suit needed anymore!

Sailing characteristics

Thanks to her modern 7/8 rig, it is a real joy to manoeuvre the Aphrodite 101 on the water. The tackle can already be optimally trimmed, regardless of whether the wind is low or high, and all halyards and tack lines can be accessed from the cockpit. It is precisely here in the hardware that the great sailing experience provided by Ott Yacht GmbH, combined with the signature of Danish designer Jan Kjaerulff, comes to the fore.

at the buoy

With around 43 m² of sail area on the wind, as well as its 30m² genoa and 80 m² class spinnaker, the best suit of sails is guaranteed for all weather conditions. In a high wind, the Aphrodite 101 is particularly easy to handle, thanks to her 19 m² self-tacking jib, which automatically transfers from one bow to the other with each turn.

Practical experience

Peter Schweer, who has tested boats for Yacht magazine for many years, wrote:

The Aphrodite 101 is above all a pure-breed sailing yacht, and is not a floating caravan. If you are satisfied with the level of comfort below deck and in the cockpit, you can even take the boat on longer North or Baltic Sea tours, and have a great sailing experience, even in stormy weather. After all, it is not just regatta sailors who like uncomplicated, yet sporty sailing. Berthing or casting off under sail, or crossing a narrow waterway without any problem is pure sailing enjoyment.
