How to squeeze a yacht into a tight marina berth
- James Stevens
- May 1, 2024
James Stevens considers a problem sent in by a Yachting Monthly reader who asks how to squeeze a yacht into a tight berth?
Jane is on a cruising holiday on board Storm Petrel , her 10m yacht. The boat has a long fin keel and skeg. When engaging astern there is a strong prop kick to starboard but once the yacht is moving astern it is reasonably easy to handle.
Jane has been the owner for five years. She has two crew who are both quite experienced. She is approaching a marina where she has been allocated an overnight berth A2, port side to if bow in. The marina is full except for her berth.
To reach A2 she has to pass between pontoons A and B almost to the landward end and then turn into the berth. The wind is about 13 knots and is blowing diagonally down between the pontoons. This means if she enters between the pontoons ahead it will be on her starboard quarter. It also means the wind is blowing off berth A2. There is no tidal stream.
Article continues below…
How do you recover a man overboard?
Paul and Emma own a 10m yacht and are day sailing with Paul’s parents on a fine day in early…
The forecast is unsettled, should you leave harbour?
Bill is in Plymouth in September planning a passage to the Med. He has decided that the first leg is…
Berthed in A1, which is just to leeward of A2 and in the same box, are two fragile- looking clinker day boats which could easily be damaged if Storm Petrel , at 7 tonnes, comes alongside in a following wind.
The marina, which was constructed in the days of smaller yachts but is now populated by larger vessels, has only about a boat-length of space between the rows. Jane looks anxiously at the berth.
Is it possible without shoreside assistance and if so how will she manage it?
How to squeeze a yacht into a tight berth
Yes it is possible, but it requires a good knowledge of the boat and some very accurate boat handling.
First it would be sensible to have fenders and warps on both sides and a roving fender ready. Eventually the yacht will enter the berth port side to, so the crew need to be prepared to step ashore quickly and secure the lines before the wind blows them down on to the dayboats. Jane should enter the gap between A and B pontoons astern.
It would be easier to engage astern some distance from the pontoons to overcome the prop kick and gain full steerage. If space is very limited before going astern Jane should make a starboard turn and, while turning, engage astern which will straighten the boat on to the original heading.
Once between the boats keep on the upwind side towards B pontoon. Jane needs to stop the boat with the stern very close to the cross pontoon at the end and only a couple of metres from the yacht on B1.
Using very careful throttle control she needs to hold the yacht in that position and let the wind blow the bow to starboard until Storm Petrel is pointing at A2 then motor in and secure quickly.
If there are marina staff available, it might then be possible to motor ahead between the pontoons and secure the lines as the yacht turns into the berth before the wind catches the stern. It would still require careful boat handling.

Toby has sailed with his family on various craft since his earliest memories allow, before racing and teaching on dinghies in Devon throughout his school years. After completing his English Degree he became a deckhand aboard superyachts – sailing in the Med, Red Sea, UAE, Indian Ocean, and Atlantic and gaining his Yachtmaster qualification.
Toby spent five years writing for Yachting Monthly, before leaving his post as Technical Editor to spend a year down under. As Test Editor, Toby is responsible for the boat testing programme, as well as the gear section of the magazine, including New Gear and more extensive gear and equipment articles.
As a teenager Julian restored a 16ft wooden motorboat and then went on to an apprenticeship as a boatbuilder in New Zealand before switching careers and entering journalism. As a reporter on a national daily newspaper he covered everything from politics to royal tours. Saturday afternoons spent working on a sister sports paper meant reporting on international car rallies, rugby and sailing and motorboat racing events on the Hauraki Gulf. He has since worked for an aerospace magazine, regional newspapers and been editor of a successful free weekly.
Julian was more recently production editor for Practical Boat Owner where his practical boating knowledge proved particularly useful.

Toby was born to a dinghy racing family and was surrounded by sailing more-or-less from birth. He received his first boat – a bright red Optimist dinghy – for his fourth birthday and has been out on the water as often as possible from then on. He has won World and National titles and captained his University sailing team. It was during his time at university he discovered keelboat racing and continues to sail big and small boats to this day.
After leaving university in 2005 he got a job writing for an online sailing publication and has continued writing for both cruising and racing publications ever since, covering two Olympic Games and other events across the globe.

Frequently Asked Questions
About this offer
I can't find the subscriptions offer I'm looking for.
If the promotion you have seen is still valid but not showing on screen, you can try to change the offer by clicking here . You will need to enter a specific code you've been sent, which are typically 4 or 5 characters long.
Why does pricing vary from country to country?
All items purchased include the cost of delivery within the price. As the cost of postage can vary quite significantly between different regions and mailing locations, this is reflected in the price.
How do you guarantee lowest prices?
Magazinesdirect.com is owned and run by Future Publishing Limited who publish all the magazines on the site. As such, we can guarantee our prices are lower than you will find elsewhere.
What is a 'rolling subscription'?
A rolling subscription provides continuous service until you choose to cancel. This means that you'll benefit from uninterrupted deliveries and you'll never miss an issue again. If you change your mind, you can cancel the auto-renewal at any time and you'll only receive the remaining issues for which you've already paid.
Can I buy a subscription if I do not live in the UK?
Yes, just make sure you select the relevant country above. All prices include packaging and delivery charges.
Can I buy this item as a gift?
Yes, all products can be delivered to the address of your choosing. The only requirement is that the delivery country must match the country selected when you add something to your basket. You can choose the specific delivery address as part of the checkout process.
How long will it take for my subscription to be delivered?
Estimated delivery dates for the first issue are displayed during the checkout process. All subsequent issues should be received around the 'on-sale date' of the magazine except for international deliveries where it can take an additional 14 days (for UK based magazines) and 30 days (for US based magazines).
I am missing an issue, what can I do?
You can request a replacement via your subscription management site www.mymagazine.co.uk . Alternatively, please contact our customer services team .
Can I choose my subscription start date?
Yes. Subscriptions are automatically set to start with the next available issue to be published, but this can be changed (subject to stock) at the basket and checkout steps. Between October and December each year, we automatically set gift subscriptions to begin in the New Year to avoid spoiling a Christmas surprise, but again this can be changed at the basket and checkout steps if you wish.
How do I download a gift card?
This can be done via the 'thank you' page once you've completed your purchase. Here you can schedule a card to be sent via email or you can print it out to hand over yourself. Yachting was founded by Oswald Villard and first published on 1 January 1907; a year later he asked his lifelong friend, Herbert L. Stone to assume responsibility as Editor. With a short break during the First World War, for service in the US Navy and with William Atkin as Editor pro tem , Herbert Stone edited the magazine until 1952, becoming part owner in the 1930s, and remaining as Publisher and President until his death on September 27, 1955.
We are most grateful to Herbert Stone's grand-daughter for donating many of his bound, editor's copies; please see the detailed article in Canadian Yachting .
This monthly magazine started well: "Published monthly. 25 cents per copy. $2.00 per Year... For Canadian postage, add 50 cents." Until some twenty years ago, Yachting had an established reputation for sailing vessels, reporting racing, cruising and design news, but for some time now has moved towards bigger, more luxurious motor-yachts. We have a fairly complete collection up to 2012 - sporadic thereafter.
