What can I see and do while on a yacht charter in Malaga?
There’s a reason that Malaga is one of Spain’s most sought-after sailing destinations—and that’s because there’s so much to see and do! Whether you want a lazy beach day or a cultural excursion, you’ll find what you’re looking for in this spectacular city. Here are some of our favourite activities to add to your Malaga sailing itinerary.
- Visit the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro castles: These two ancient fortresses sit atop a hill overlooking Malaga city and offer stunning views of the surrounding area. The Alcazaba was built by the Moorish rulers of Spain in the 11th century, while the Gibralfaro was added later on by the Christian king, Alfonso XI. Visitors can explore the remains of both castles, including their extensive gardens and ramparts.
- Stroll around El Palo: This traditional fishing village is located just east of Malaga city and makes for a pleasant day trip. Wander around the village's narrow streets, stop for some seafood at one of its many restaurants and enjoy views of the Mediterranean Sea.
- Sail to Isla de Graciosa: Just off the coast of Malaga is Isla de Graciosa, a small island that makes for a great day trip. While on the island you can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of its sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters.
- Visit La Concepción botanical gardens: Located just outside of Malaga city centre, these gardens are home to over 5,000 species of plants and flowers from all over the world.
- Explore Malaga's Old Town: The Old Town is one of the best places to see in Malaga if you're interested in its history and culture. Walk around its winding streets, visit its museums and churches and soak up views of its beautiful architecture.
- Take a day trip: Head to nearby destinations like Granada, Seville and Ronda. If you have time, you can even visit Gilbraltar!
- Soak up the sun on one of Malaga’s beaches: Playa de la Malagueta is a popular spot for sunbathing and swimming, while El Palo is ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Other iconic beaches include Playa de los Locos, El Chorro and La Barrosa.
- Go scuba diving: Try your luck at El Chorrillo de Marbella. This incredible dive spot is full of vibrant colours from the surrounding coral reef and is home to an abundance of unique species such as moray eels, cuttlefish, crabs and barracudas. For more experienced divers, head over to Cala de Mijas and explore its many underwater caves and tunnels. This spectacular spot offers a great opportunity to observe all kinds of marine life up close, including sea bass, moray eels, octopus and much more. You'll even find some amazing wrecks from World War II!
Should I have a skipper on board my private yacht rental in Malaga?
Our large fleet of yacht rentals in Malaga includes both skippered vessels as well as those without a skipper, so you can find the perfect one for your boat trip. Even if you have a licence to sail we always recommend a skippered vessel for a more relaxing and worry-free holiday. Skippers will handle all of the logistics like docking, anchoring and sailing the vessel so you can spend more time with the ones that you love. The best part about having a skipper present is the fact that they are usually locals, so they can give you recommendations and help you see everything on your travel itinerary, and more.
So, what are you waiting for? Sail in the capable hands of a skipper and allow them to be your private tour guide around Malaga.
What type of boat should I choose for my Malaga yacht rental?
While browsing the Scansail website, you might be wondering which type of boat you should choose for your yacht rental in Malaga, and the answer to this will depend on the amount of time you plan to be out on the water. For a shorter holiday of less than a week, you shouldn’t need more than a RIB or a motorboat, which are usually chartered by the day. A longer holiday of a week or more will require more amenities and accommodations, such as a kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms. Catamarans and yachts are spacious vessels usually rented by the week, perfect for a longer holiday with family and friends. For people who like sailing for sport, we’d recommend a sailboat. If you’re a novice sailor but still want an authentic sailing experience, a skippered sailboat is a fantastic option.
Find the perfect vessel for your sailing trip in Malaga with Scansail, and have the holiday of a lifetime.

Yacht Charters Malaga
Leisurely comfort in glittering southern spain, best time to visit, activities & experiences.
A true seaside resort town, there’s no shortage of activities for those yacht chartering in Malaga. We recommend balancing your days between sightseeing expeditions and lazy summer days filled with relaxing beaches and fine dining. Get some ideas for your upcoming tour with these must-do activities:
Explore historical monuments
With over 2,000 years of rich history, Malaga is replete with significant historic landmarks. Visit La Alcazaba, a Moorish fortress monument constructed in the 8th century. The inner citadel of the building contains the opulent palace grounds and three peaceful courtyard gardens. The outer citadel contains iconic Moorish gardens complete with fountains and elaborate gateways. Just a stone's throw away you’ll find a relatively well preserved Roman theatre, which was used as a quarry during the Moorish period. Discovered in 1951, some of the spectator seating is in such good condition that it's easy to imagine the site's former splendour.
Visit unique museums
The Museo del Vidrio is a quirky museum located in a tastefully furnished house constructed in the 1700’s. Visitors can expect to find a lovely collection of antique glassware, with some items being many thousands of years old. Civilisations such as Phoenicians, Romans, Ancient Greeks and Egyptians are all represented. Don’t miss the stunning 17th century objects from the Dutch Golden Age. For something a little different, visit the Automobile and Fashion Museum. 100 classic cars from as early as 1903 are on display here, as well as 200 pieces of couture clothing dated mainly between the roaring 20s and the 1950s.
Relax on the beach
When visiting Malaga, there is no shortage of world class beaches to enjoy. Among the most popular is La Malagueta. Conveniently located on the town waterfront, La Malagueta has sandy beaches and lively energy, attracting many tourists in the warmer months. At more than a kilometre long, there’s plenty of room for everyone on this picturesque stretch of sand. A short sail away is the locals favourite, Torremolinos. Lined with restaurants, a walkable promenade and various water activities, this is our recommendation for a family friendly excursion without the crowds.

Noted as the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, Malaga in southern Spain has a harbour that is protected from the North winds by its mountainous background and, not surprisingly, is reported having the highest average temperatures year on year for the whole of the Spanish Mediterranean coastline.
More Details
For the serious yachting enthusiast this is the ideal place to start exploring the Costa del Sol. The bay of Andalusia in which Malaga nestles is one of the safest harbours capable of giving safe anchorage to the largest of luxury yachts . Even the Queen Mary II is known to have anchored here. The archaeological history of Malaga is unique in that findings to the east of the city at Zafanaya have revealed that this site was even known to Neanderthal man. Malaga as a port of call appears to have been founded by the Phoenicians in around 770 BC. They named the port "Malaka" hence the name has changed little over the years. After the Phoenician era, the Greeks held control of the city until the Carthaginians defeated them and held sway until 206 BC. The "Punic Wars" saw the defeat of the Hannibal by the Romans who called the area around the port "Flavia Malacite." They built roads to connect other Roman ports, villas and an amphitheatre some of which has been excavated in 1951. After the Roman Empire broke up, the Arabs invaded the area and during the 13th Century they converted Malaga into an inner fortress that was surrounded by high walls and five ornate defensive gates. Some of this remains today and is well worth a guided tour to appreciate the reason for Malaga having such a mixed architectural history. In 1487 the Arab control was surrendered to the catholic Kings and in the 16th and 17th Centuries the harbour was extended twice, the massive cathedral erected but not completed until the 18th Century giving the cathedral and bell-tower a mixed Renaissance-baroque structure. The 20th Century has proven to be a prosperous one for the town with its multitude of museums, restaurants, hotels and a local airport. Good planning has ensured that the old town is separated from its growing industrial suburbs and that Malaga is now the 8th largest European city on the Mediterranean. Malaga's esplanade and shopping malls are very attractive and for a relaxing stroll the Malaga Park that stretches parallel to Guadiaro Quay has two walking pathways one on the north side and two on the south side. If time ashore is not a problem then the Picasso museum and its near neighbour the Contemporary Art Centre are both worth a visit. They are both a few minutes walk from the Hotel Malaga a 4- star luxury hotel on the seafront. The Malaga cathedral, though closed to the public on Sundays and Holidays, has the highest tower in the city and thus very easy to find. The fact that such a tall structure has survived an earthquake and various minor wars is something of a miracle. As for the best times to sail into the Bay of Andalusia, it is worth remembering that Malaga has three major festivals that can be its busiest time of the year. The Arts Festivals all happen in October when the whole month is dedicated to celebrating Picasso's works in the Plaza Marina. There are also five exhibition halls that feature local artists. At Easter the Holy Week (Semana Santa) Festival, that has a more quiet and contemplative atmosphere, still has plenty of colour to the floats and plenty of music. The third festival of importance is the Malaga Fair. During this event symbols of Spanish culture take pride of place. There are again parades processing round the streets and monuments, live Flamenco shows and a emphasis on Spanish and local music.

Malaga is the capital of the Costa del Sol region, which is known as Europe's sunny and beach paradise. Therefore, you will have no problem finding the best beach nearby, among which is the Blue Flag La Misericordia, a delightful sandy bay, wide and long, washed by moderate waves; and Los Alamos - just as beautiful, but slightly more developed, with residential complexes.

Malaga, known to many as the capital of the Costa del Sol, is more than a seaside town. You can learn about the Islamic past of Spain in the majestic palace of the fortress of Alcazaba, while Pablo Picasso was born here, so there are museums that shed light on his early years. And during the famous city festivals you can also get acquainted with Andalusian culture, watch flamenco shows and drink sherry in the part of the country where they take place. And if you need to be reminded, the world-famous beaches, resorts and golf courses of the Costa del Sol are unlikely to be closer.
With powerful walls visible from almost anywhere in the city, Malaga Alcazaba is a Moorish fortress palace and a valuable monument of the Islamic era of the 8th century. The Arabs' gates were built from old Roman columns. Beyond the second walls is the palace and magnificent dwellings, which are scattered in three courtyards.
Directly down the slope, outside the outer walls of the Alcazaba is the best ancient monument of the city - the Theater. Today is in pretty good condition. Several tiers of seats remain intact, and the newly opened visitor center displays some finds.
City Cathedral is a kind of mix of Renaissance and Baroque styles . A majestic attraction is the fortress. Unlike Alcazaba, it has a more military purpose, with observation towers and ramparts that still stand today, competing with pine trees on a hillside. When it's hot, this esplanade is like diving into the forest, and you will be surprised how cool it can be even in summer. The wide, lush branches of tall palm trees provide ample shadow over the three main paths. In front of the City Council building is a beautiful rose garden.
Malaga - the birthplace of Pablo Picasso , so no trip can be complete if you do not give credit to this artist. Head to his birthplace in the Plaza de la Merced.
Beautiful beaches
However, the Costa del Sol is Europe’s sunny and beach paradise, so you won’t have a problem finding the best beach nearby. Those who know get into the car and drive to Torremolinos, a 20-minute drive away. La Misericordia, marked with the Blue Flag, is a delightful sandy bay, wide and long, washed by moderate waves. Los Alamos is equally beautiful, but slightly more developed, with residential complexes at the back and beach concerts in the summer.
If you want to try a completely local dish, you won’t go wrong with espeto (fried sardine) at the local chiringuito (beach bar). The classic way to do this is to dig a hole in the sand and start a fire, and then fry the sardines over the coals.
Long, thick reeds are commonly used for sardine skewers . In Malaga, there is even a statue of espetero cooking sardines.
After all, you are on the Costa del Sol, which means you can barely walk a few kilometers without tripping over a first-class golf course . 10 kilometers along the coast from the city is Parador de Málaga, an 18-hole course that welcomes players of all levels.
How to get there
There is an airport in Malaga, from there take the C1 train. Duration 13 min. The distance is 8 km.

Spain luxury yacht charter
Spain’s vibrant cities and diverse cruising grounds are rich with culture and well-equipped for welcoming superyachts, with over 300 hundred marinas spread along the country's 8,000 kilometres of stunning coastline. A luxury superyacht charter in Spain offers guests the chance to enjoy the mainland’s yachting hubs like Marbella in Andalusia, with its famous megayacht-lined Puerto Banús, as well as electric cities like Barcelona and the former America's Cup venue of Valencia. From the mainland on the Iberian Peninsula, charter guests can cruise over to the sun-kissed Balearics to sample some of Europe’s finest island and Cala-hopping and world-renowned nightlife.
Spain yacht season and weather
The southern and eastern coasts of Spain have year-round balmy temperatures, with the Costa del Sol and the Balearic islands enjoying sunny days and temperatures in the low 20s even in November.
The Spanish charter season runs from May to October, when blue skies and warm weather prevails. Peak holiday months are July and August when average temperatures are between 25°C and 29°C, although temperatures regularly head into the 30s during the summer. During these peak months, resorts are bustling, nightlife is at its best but anchorages can be busy. Travel early or late in the season to miss the crowds and still enjoy plenty of sunshine.
Spain yacht charter itineraries
From Marbella on the Costa del Sol to Barcelona and the Costa Brava, Spain’s mainland coastline has a host of attractive options and facilities for visiting yachts.
On Spain’s southern coast, Puerto Banús marina has over 900 berths to accommodate yachts up to 50 metres (with the potential to accommodate larger craft if booking ahead) and has the pick of the glam nightlife right off the passerelle. Charterers on Spain’s sun-drenched south coast will find championship golf courses, chic beach clubs, traditional fishing towns and sweeping golden sandy beaches.
With the Costa Brava coastline littered with sandy bays and quaint, charming towns, and the enigmatic cities of Barcelona (teeming with Michelin-starred restaurants and incredible architecture) and Valencia (known for its museums and regatta racing history) lying in wait, plus artsy Sitges and historic sites such as the UNESCO listed Tarragona, it’s easy to spend a week or more exploring the colourful delights of Spain’s east coast.
Barcelona’s OneOcean Port Vell has berths up to 190 metres. Sailing yachts with masts higher than 55 metres must inform the marina as entry under the cable car line across the port will need to be arranged. Valencia Yacht Base offers berths for yachts up to 120 metres.
The Balearic Islands lie around 86 nautical miles west from Valencia and 100 nautical miles south of Barcelona and remain Spain’s most popular cruising destination, with Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza boasting a mix of irresistible calas, nature reserves and scintillating nightlife, with sleepy Formentera offering more spectacular coves.
Spain by superyacht
Getting to spain.
For the Costa del Sol, Malaga airport serves commercial and private jets. On the Costa Brava, Girona airport handles commercial and private jet traffic. Multiple airports in Barcelona and Valencia also serve commercial and private jets.
As foreign-flagged boats may not start or end charters in Spain, typical routes into the country for charters include crossing from the French-Spanish border.
Legal requirements
All boats from outside the EU must report to customs officials on entry into Spain.
Unlike in some EU countries, where VAT tax can be reduced depending on time spent cruising outside of the country, Spain has a flat rate of 21% for VAT. Commerical charter yachts can however receive a break from Spanish matriculation tax.
Generally, but not in every case, local maritime safety regulations dictate that a maximum number of 12 guests are allowed on board a charter yacht.

These are the biggest and most expensive boats at 2024's Palm Beach yacht show
- The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
- Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.
While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.
Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).
These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show, in size order.
Nero: 90.1 meters
Seanna: 64.5 meters
Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool
The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.
Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.
There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.
Come Together: 60 meters
Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna
Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.
The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.
The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.
