Superyacht Destination Guide: Greece

There can be no better way to explore the famous — and not-so famous — islands and destinations Greece has to offer than by superyacht. The Greeks have always had a deeply rooted affiliation with the sea, and Greece offers a particularly versatile yachting experience, as the country’s myriad of islands to explore presents such different personalities.

From the windmills and idyllic white-washed houses of the Cyclades, to the olive-tinted landscapes and blue waters of the Ionian islands, it can be quite easy to see why Greece is an increasingly busy superyacht destination.

Together with some insight from Lucy Ritchie, charter broker at Fraser , we explore what makes Greece such an essential adventure to experience on a yacht.

The Greek Climate

Greece has a Mediterranean climate with plenty of sunshine, mild temperatures and a limited amount of rainfall. Due to the country's geographical position, its rugged relief and its distribution between the mainland and the sea, there is a great amount of disparity in Greece's climate.

Summers in Greece are usually very hot, and in July and August temperatures usually reach 30 to 35°C, but sometimes even 40°C and more. Due to the country's unique geography, Greece has a unique range of micro-climates and local variations.

The Meltemi Winds

The Meltemi, also known as the North Winds, are strong dry north winds that blow during the summer yachting season in the Aegean Islands. The winds start during the middle of May right through to mid-September – and some claim until October. It starts in the afternoon quite strongly, until the early evening when it dies down.

The Meltemi Winds are a large reason yachts in this area like to start the day’s cruise in the mornings.

Greek yacht clearance and regulations

Entering and cruising in Greece is pretty straightforward, and largely the same as many other EU destinations, although there are some more interesting pointers to note:

  • Fishing is only allowed with a snorkel at certain areas. Fishing with scuba gear is prohibited.
  • To protect archaeological sites, scuba diving is restricted. Permission should be sought locally.
  • Nights should be spent on board, and not in hotels inland, for instance. If the boat will be unoccupied overnight, the harbour master and immigration should be notified.
  • Individual passports are not stamped on entry into Greece by yacht, nor is this required for departure with the same yacht. However, if leaving by other means such as air, stamps are required by immigration at the point of exit.
  • Hauling out a yacht requires authorisation of the port police.
  • When entering Greece, cats and dogs require health and rabies inoculation certificates issued in the country of origin, not more than 1 year previously for dogs, 6 months for cats, and not less than 6 days before arrival.
  • Foreign yachts can buy fuel duty-free, with customs approval, at stations that are marked by yellow & blue diagonal stripes.
  • The Greek courtesy flag as well as the Q flag must be flown  in the correct manner  (position, size, condition).

Recommended Greek superyacht destinations

Lucy recommended Spetses to us as a must-stop destination on a charter, telling us, "Depending upon the time of year and what your desires are, Spetses is a real gem. An island with no cars, it gets a bit busy in high season but in May/June it is delightful with great shops and romantic restaurants to be enjoyed. A honeymooners paradise, watch the sun setting from the romantic viewpoint as the dolphins frolic around right in front of you!"

Mykonos is an island in the Cyclades group in the Aegean Sea. It's popularly known for its summer party atmosphere and is located right in the middle of the Aegean, making for a convenient base from which to explore the less touristy, more remote islands and coves Greece has to offer.

If you’re looking for your own secluded beach on a deserted island, look no further than Rinia. Visitable only via private boat as there are no public services to the island, and with nothing on the island other than a few ancient ruins and farmers’ huts used by locals to tend to their crops, there are almost zero tourists here at any one time. With no hotels or amenities, those that do visit typically only do so for a few hours.

This amazing Greek island has lots of small picturesque villages and vineyards, and is a top scenic destination in the Aegean Islands. Many villages have beautifully restored buildings which offer visitors the opportunity to experience Greek life in a truly authentic way. It’s also a top destination for swimming and diving in crystal blue Greek waters.

Lefkada is still one of the most accessible and popular of all the Ionian Islands. It has a warm Mediterranean climate and steeped in antiquity. Fringed by many beautiful white sandy beaches Lefkada is ideal for superyachts to moor. Take in the spectacular views when you drop anchor for an unforgettable vacation. It’s connected to the mainland by a floating bridge and a long causeway, quite an exciting experience.

With a volcanic landscape, cultural attractions and a wonderful haven for superyachts, Santorini is the place to be. It’s now the destination for many travellers who want something a little different when on vacation. With stunning panoramic views, this heaven on earth Greek Island makes dreams come true.

And the best place to anchor?

Lucy had a clear favourite when it came to anchorage spots, telling us, "For me, the best kept secret is a little bay on one of the uninhabited Islets of Hydra not far from Poros. You can waterski, paddleboard walk ashore and climb up to the mountainous peaks. I also definitely recommend speaking to Greek captains – most of them have spent their whole lives cruising around these Islands and each one will have a special little cove unknown by most. Definitely ask your captain, there’s so much to discover."

Previously referred to as a natural link between the Adriatic and the Mediterranean Sea, Gouvia Marina is an idyllic yachting location. Amongst shallow, sandy beaches and colourful harbours, Northern Corfu is crowned by cliffs and rocky coastlines; a perfect location for underwater exploration.

Lefkas Marina

Lefkas Marina is situated among a group of 24 islands renowned for its turquoise water and endless, white sandy beaches. It has the capacity to host 620 yachts up to 45 metres long – with electricity and fresh water available at each berthing point.

Zea Marina is a vibrant superyacht marina in Athens, near the main port of Piraeus. With fully equipped facilities and an array of services on offer to vessels up to 150 metres, Zea Marina is a preferred superyacht destination in Greece.

The marina has a mooring capacity of 670 yachts up to 150 metres with an 8-metre draft, on both permanent and floating pontoons. Zea Marina provides electricity and fresh water at all its berths, as well as a waste removal service.

The marina was previously renovated for the 2004 Olympic Games, underlining its prestige among international visitors.

The Mediterranean’s Superyacht Marinas

Superyacht Marina – Superyachts in a marina

Every year, the demand for bigger and better superyachts, defined as having a loadline length of 24m and above, grows greater. In order to keep up, the Mediterranean is offering larger berths at modern superyacht marinas to host the ever-increasing number of vessels.

According to superyacht authority Boat International, 370 superyachts were sold in 2016, the largest being 98m; in 2022, those numbers rose to 600 and 123.2m . Staggeringly, there were already 25 longer yachts at sea , the largest being Azzam at 180.61m, believed to be owned by an Abu Dhabi royal. The growing trend has meant there’s been a need for new terminology, megayachts and gigayachts are very loosely defined as being 35m and 60m plus, respectively.

While flush buyers and builders might feel that the sky’s the limit – a larger yacht means more space for helicopter decks, infinity pools, indoor spas and gardens – parking can often be problematic, as there are only a few superyacht marinas in the world able to accommodate ships at the top end and, even then, only one or two at a time.

But the top superyacht marinas in the Mediterranean, the world’s largest superyacht market, are answering the call, not only offering longer slips and amenities for comfortable, convenient berthing, but immediate access to some of Europe’s most popular destinations.

Offering state-of-the-art services in the heart of the Mediterranean, Flisvos Marina offers it’s visitors the opportunity to sail the beautiful Greek coastlines and surrounding islands in the emerald waters of the Aegean. Less than a 30 minute drive from the center of Athens, guests can easily visit the infamous ruins of Acropolis or the Parthenon, to name a few of the many attritions the city has to offer. When at the marina, visitors can soak up the sun for a relaxing lunch or dinner at a number of sea view dining venues or brows the specialist shops on site which are particularly popular with fitness and marine enthusiasts.

Superyacht Marina - Cala del Forte in Ventimiglia, Italy

Cala del Forte in Ventimiglia, Italy

Officially inaugurated in July 2021, the 178-berth Cala del Forte in Ventimiglia, Italy, has been conceived by Monaco Ports Authority to relieve congestion in its sovereign city state, placing yachters within a 30-minute road transfer of Europe’s most glamorous fixtures — the F1 Grand Prix, grand nights at Café de Paris and the iconic Casino de Monte-Carlo, which has seen fortunes won and lost at its VIP blackjack and baccarat tables since 1853. Nice, St Tropez and Cannes, and the beautiful beaches and resorts of the Italian Riviera, Corsica and Sardinia are a short cruise away; it has also opened up more picturesque destinations in Italy and France making this one of the most desirable superyacht marinas amongst those that enjoy exploring. A short stroll from the marina’s 3,800sqm of top-tier shops, restaurants, cafés, offices and amenities, you’ll find yourself in the historic old town of Ventimiglia Alta, known for its fish and farmers’ markets; a half-hour’s drive east, food and style mecca San Remo invites leisurely days spent shopping and relaxing at café tables.

Portopiccolo at Sistiana Bay, Italy

Portopiccolo, a 400-residence marine village set within a former quarry embraced by rocky cliffs and Duino Cliffs Nature Reserve in Sistiana Bay, Italy, accommodates yachts up to 45m with longer slips. (When most of these marinas were conceived a decade or so ago, superyachts were a lot smaller.) Emulating a traditional seaside village, it’s one of the most modern along the whole of the 800km of Adriatic coastline before you hit the Greek islands, with a swathe of facilities designed to keep you lingering — the aptly named Sky Pool at 60m above sea level, a Beach Club (with three more pools), a yacht club and an expansive Spa by Bakel, plus multiple restaurants and two streets dedicated to upscale shops. If you do want to get out and explore beyond this superyacht marina, Venice is a two-hour drive, while Trieste, beloved by writers such as Joyce and Saba and famed for its ocean-facing square and coffee-shop-lined streets, is right on your doorstep.

Portonovi at Boka Bay, Montenegro

Along the coast, Portonovi is home to Boka Bay on the Montenegro Riviera, offering a similar proposition and another superyacht marina. Its townhouses, villas and penthouses are evocative of archetypal ancient Adriatic towns such as Kotor and Dubrovnik and etched onto land that shelves steeply from the mountains to the ocean. This superyacht marina is also home to Europe’s first One&Only resort, the Espace Chenot Health Wellness Spa, and a members-only yacht club by Winch Design with slips giving immediate access to the Adriatic and the Dalmatian Islands just a day’s sail away.

Marina Vela in Barcelona, Spain

Of course, superyachts require adequate winter — or home port — berthing, too, and here is what appeals to yacht owners and crews in terms of amenities and lifestyle tends to differ.

“For owners, when we speak about superyacht marinas, we speak about privacy and exclusivity — they like to be treated as if they’re in a five-star hotel — and strategic locations to cruising grounds,” says Billy Cañellas, Managing Director of Marina Vela in Barcelona. “Captains and crew want technical equipment working to perfection and location is very important for them.”

Barcelona satisfies both. Marina Vela offers berthing for yachts up to 90m and has three restaurants offering dining delights from tapas to Italian cuisine right on the waterfront. It offers private access to 130 moorings, VIP areas and a crew lounge, and a world-beating dry dock with space for up to 222 vessels; Marina Vela is also close to the refit and repair shops Barcelona Nautic Center and Marina Barcelona 92 .

Marina Port Vell is another option, encompassing 151 berths for yachts up to 190m plus luxe amenities such as the Blue Wave Bar which was selected as the best-designed bar in the world by the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards 2016, and a private members’ club and restaurant designed by Barcelona’s El Equipo Creativo built on the water overlooking the superyacht marina.

Etched between the beach and the mountains, the Catalan capital offers all the lifestyle benefits of a coastal destination and big city for both owners flying in and crews based there, year-round: you can play watersports, hike through spectacular countryside, or cycle or ski, depending on the season, through the nearby Pyrenees; its neighbourhoods offer fantastic dining, culture (Gaudi’s fabulous monuments spring to mind) and shopping, particularly along Passeig de Gràcia and in the Born district. Barcelona’s location between the south of France and the Balearic islands means you’re a short cruise from some of Europe’s most coveted destinations — Costa Brava, Balearic Islands, Costa Azul, Corsica and Sardinia — and opportunities for day-tripping abound.

To the south, you can anchor off Playa de las Casetas in Garraf to grab lunch or dinner at fish and seafood restaurant El Chiringuito before continuing south to fishing village Sitges, a historic haunt of artists such as modernist master Santiago Rusiñol and now celebrities and footballers. To the north, there’s medieval walled town Tossa de Mar, which seems to cascade down the mountain tracing the banks of a creek, and Cadaqués, where Salvador Dalí used to summer and which is now a hangout for artists from all over Europe.

IGY Marina in Sète, France

IGY Marinas’ first ever European site, which opened in Sète in the south of France in 2019, is another development that not only considers owners but the comfort of captains and crew, offering a year-round superyacht marina with berthing up to 100m and side ties of up to 150m with the added benefit of being a few minutes’ walk from the city’s scenic canals and vibrant literary, arts and theatre scene. The surrounding Camargue basin, probably best known for its beautiful wild grey horses, provides plenty of opportunities for outdoor pursuits, including traditional water jousting tournaments, held along the Sète’s scenic waterways since 1666.

Best Marinas in Greece

Greece is located in the Meditteranean sea and it’s one of the must-visit countries for sailors. The sailing period in Greece begins in May but the best time to sail during the winter is in the middle of January. The name of these winter days is “Alkyonides”, and they’re somehow like a short summer. However, it’s always a good time to appreciate the beauty of wonderful Greek seascapes, villages, archaeological sites, and green or dried landscapes. The Greek archipelago is suitable for both experienced and new sailors, with numerous hidden coves and beaches that are only accessible by boat. In this article, I’m going to inform you about the best marinas in Greece, some well-known and others less uncrowded.

General Info about Greek Marinas

Greece has more than 3,000 islands and islets, each one with its own unique character. The white-blue and dry Cyclades islands with their crystal clear water. Dodecanese islands with luscious green and deep blue waters. In the Sporades, and in the Ionian Sea you can experience a combination of green, rocky, and sandy landscape. Nowadays, new harbors and marinas are building in the entire Mediterranean area in the last 20 years. However, several marina build projects have started but haven’t been completed yet. There are more than 500 harbors but around 25 marinas today, and not all of them are well-developed. However, there are many picturesque harbors such as Simi, Kioni, and Port Gaios, among others, where you can truly moor your sailboat in the middle of the central market square!

Furthermore, the mooring fees are cheap at around 10 euros but unfortunately, there’s no structured organization for the management of the Greek marinas. Moreover, in Greece, there are a plethora of anchorages. You can drop anchor into crystal-clear waters with a quite good holding ground in a sandy seabed.

Best Marinas in Crete

  • Venetian Inner Harbor, Iraklion : Heraklion Marina functions as a shelter for fishing boats and as a marina for sailboats and yachts. The space is limited but the number of boats that are hosted is larger than in the past, as it is now better exploited by creating a floating pier for yachts. Greece Yacht Charters

Greece is a country in Southeast Europe, which is located in the Balkans. The country is embossed in four seas: the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea, the Cretan Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea . Due to its advantageous location, Greece possesses one of the longest coastlines in the world. This outstanding feature makes the country an incredibly famous sailing destination. Beautiful golden beaches along the island, emerald transparent waters, pine forests in the mountains, and extremely pleasant weather will not leave any sailor indifferent. Deciding to charter a shining yacht, you make an investment in unforgettable memories and the desire to come back as a matter of course.

The reasons for which one must visit Greece are difficult to count as it has a lot to offer for everyone. Rich history, glorious past, impressive ancient buildings, delicious food and wine, an abundance of celebrations and festivals are waiting for you to explore the picturesque region. The pristine nature of Athens, Volos, Corfu, Kavala, and other Greek cities and perfect weather conditions create an ideal opportunity to rent a boat and melt into the pleasure.

Sailing Conditions in Greece

Being situated in Southeast Europe, Greece welcomes sailors from around the globe to feel all the benefits of the Mediterranean climate. Hot and dry summers with rare precipitation and clear skies provide a good opportunity for yacht rental without any fear of possible rains and extreme winds. The average temperature during the summer period never drops below 20 ºC even at night. It is impossible to miss such great weather and not to go far in the sea on your sailboat to enjoy the 30 ºC heat in the daytime. Greek winters are usually colder, especially in those areas that are close to mountains. But they are not lingering and not so cold to somehow disturb dedicated sailors. The sailing season usually starts in March and continues up to November, bringing different sailing conditions to the island.

Best Times for Vacation in Greece

Having an intention to make the most of your sailboat vacation in the breathtaking destination, it is necessary to get acquainted with the weather conditions of the desired period. As a rule, the peak season of sailing occurs in the summer months and up to the end of September . This time features extremely high air and water temperature and a huge number of sailors even in the remote marinas. By the way, Greek summers are an ideal time for those who are ready to forget about sleep and party the whole night. One of the most important things to consider is that in July, the northern wind Meltemi comes to the shore and creates many hazardous obstacles for sailing.

Spring and autumn wind speeds and summer conditions force you to choose this time period if you are looking for peace and quiet. There is no extreme heat and strong winds, as well as no abundance of people. You still can enjoy going bareboat without any unpleasant conditions and immerse yourself into the same active and loud festivals and celebrations.

Sailing Difficulty Level

Greece has already gained its high popularity as one of the world’s best sailing destinations . Because of its climate and location, the country represents great sailing options for beginners and professional sailors alike. The weather changes require sailors to explore the weather forecast beforehand to select the desired time for coming and know what to expect. The level of difficulty is mostly predetermined by the Meltemi wind of 6-8 force. Blowing from July to September may scary fresh sailors and even become a challenge for experienced professionals. If you are not highly skillful and just do not have enough confidence to manage the vessel by yourself, consider booking a boat in spring or autumn. The absence of powerful winds will not spoil your first sailing experience but contribute to positive impressions.

If you are still not ready to face the open water, 12 Knots is glad to provide you with the help of a qualified skipper and an opportunity to hire a crew . Being focused on the needs and desires of every sailor, we offer either a skipper to help to refresh the memories of handling a boat or a complete training process in our sailing school. Both options are delivered at their best quality and reasonable price.

Main Charter Bases

Greece is an incredibly important sailing destination for 12 Knots. Welcoming thousands of happy sailors every year, the country has a lot of well-equipped marinas and good mooring options. Depending on the desired part of the country, preferred city, and climate peculiarities, you may select a perfect one. The team of 12 Knots spreads their professional services on more than 30 bases along the coast. You may rent a yacht or boat at bases situated in the most famous Greek cities and islands:

  • Santorini  and many others

Boat Types for Charters

Having a great number of bases in possession, 12 Knots aims to provide sailors with powerful sailboats from leading manufacturers. Approximately 6,000 vessels are now available for charter in Greece. Sailing yachts, catamarans, powerboats, gulets, and houseboats are waiting for your booking. Do not hesitate and contact our team to become an owner of a white shining boat at a good cost. It is advisable to perform booking beforehand to avoid disappointment and misunderstanding.

Other Information about Greece Sailing

Before diving into the images of future perfect sailing vacations, every sailor should be aware of some essential information about the intended place.

  • The official language is Greek, although English is also widely spoken, especially in tourist places.
  • Greece is the Euro zone; that’s why the official currency is Euro.

Golfito Marina Village and Resort, Costa Rica, was officially opened on March 1 after five years of development and can accommodate yachts up to 121 metres. Its first superyacht visitor was the 57 metre  Halo .

The marina is located within the gulf of Golfo Duce, making the marina immune from the swells of the Pacific Ocean. With a six-inch tidal range, a current that rarely exceeds 1.5 knots and winds that average five to seven knots, the marina offers a safe environment at all times.

Though parts of the resort are still under construction, visitors to the marina will enjoy the benefits of a fully-equipped yard, 24/7 security and a huge range of yacht services. The hotly anticipated on-site yacht club is a members-only luxury, with restaurants, a cigar lounge, private concierge, fully-stocked bar and a spacious patio for evening drinks.

The marina will also be offering a range of activities, from horse riding on the beach and canopy tours through the jungle to a range of watersports and yoga classes. Golfito Marina Village & Resort is also home to a luxury spa and swimming pool and is also close to luxury boutiques and fine dining restaurants. Additionally, a variety of luxury residences will be available, ranging from beachfront villas to a private island option.

Cala del Forte

A marina in Ventimiglia, Italy, which is approximately 14.6 kilometres away from the Principality of Monaco by boat, is set to offer luxury yacht owners the opportunity to rent one of the planned 171 berths on a 40-year basis.

The Cala del Forte will accommodate yachts ranging from 6.5 to 60 metres and the marina should be fully operational by summer 2018. By 2019, the marina will have a variety of shops, cafés, parking, shipyard, promenade and gardens and either an elevator or funicular to take visitors to the historical Ventimiglia Old Town.

The marina has been bought by the SMIP (Société Monégasque Internationale Portuaire), an organisation owned by the Monaco Government, and will be fully integrated into the management of the Port of Monaco, which also operates Port Hercule and the Port of Fontvieille.

"The purchase of Cala del Forte was a unique opportunity to build a brand-new marina in the immediate surroundings of the Principality," Gianbattista Borea d'Olmo, director of Monaco Ports and Cala del Forte, told Boat International.  "The benefits of this investment will include the development of a cross-border collaboration, the creation of new jobs, the demonstration of a new type of eco-responsible and ethical marina management as well as the expansion to the East of traditional yacht cruising grounds."

The current waiting list for berths in Monaco goes into the hundreds and during summer months, more than 50 applications for berths are rejected per day.

"The new development will strengthen the deep historical and cultural links between our communities by enriching the personal and economic relationships that Ventimiglia has with the Principality," Borea d'Olmo added.

Aside from being a stone's throw away from the Principality, the port is within walking distance of one of the most famous food markets on the Italian coastline and provides one of the most sheltered harbours. The picturesque Old Town of Ventimiglia is also the perfect alternative for a day trip away from the hustle and bustle of Monaco.

Ibiza Old Town

A new superyacht marina is being developed in the Port of Ibiza Town after the Ports of Balearics APB granted a concession to YSM, the specialist marina division of Sovren House Group. The area covered includes the former Port Ibiza Town marina and Duques de Alba, as well as a new showcase facility called Es Martell on the dock at Darsena del Levante.

This area previously had a maximum length of 40 metres but the new development will be able to cater for yachts measuring up to 185 metres. As a result, it is expected to attract an influx of ultra-high net worth individuals and provide a boost to the local economy. The new marina is due to launch in time for the 2017 Mediterranean season.

Stephen White, founder and CEO of Sovren House Group, said: "We will be ground-breaking both in Ibiza and across the Balearics in providing the kind of marina that is worthy of the expanding fleet of superyachts." He added the Sovren House Group has already begun working with local authorities to ensure that the new marina brings positive benefits to the community.

Often referred to as the jewel in the crown of the West Mediterranean, Ibiza Old Town is a popular destination for high profile visitors, from Hollywood stars to European royalty.

Marina d'Arechi

The finishing touches have been added to the new Marina d’Arechi in Salerno, Italy and the development is now open, with 1,000 berths including 80 specifically for superyachts up to 100 metres.

Located at the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage site , the marina boasts 340,000 square metres of water basin dedicated to yachts with a scenic backdrop and an eco-friendly design.

Marina d’Arechi is the creation of Agostino Gallozzi, chairman of Gallozzi Group, which has invested €120 million in the project — €80 million of which was concentrated on the marina infrastructure.

“For anyone living in Salerno, sailing and yachting on the Amalfi Coast is the ideal way of enjoying weekends and holidays with friends and family throughout the year. From the age of 15 sailing the Mediterranean waters I visited so many marinas, none of which really satisfied me 100%," Agostino Gallozzi said.

"It had to be an amazing marina, beautiful and perfect, safe, comfortable, friendly and enjoyable every day of the year, state of the art in technology, the place where you want to be all the time. Now I’m proud to say after years of planning: Marina d’Arechi is born.”

The new marina is now part of the Camper & Nicholsons Marinas' network.

“Marina d’Arechi fits in perfectly with the Camper & Nicholsons Marinas family," said Dan Hughes, business development director at Camper & Nicholsons Marinas . "The service is friendly, yet professional which makes for a great atmosphere around the marina. This truly is an international superyacht marina for the 21st century and a welcoming homeport for all that wish to enjoy the relaxed, luxury lifestyle on offer.”

Dubai Harbour

Dubai is hoping to become one of the world's leading superyacht hubs thanks to plans for a new marina, which will be the largest in the Middle East and North Africa. Plans were made public on January 2 for Dubai Harbour, which will feature 1,400 berths for vessels up to 85 metres.

Located alongside world-renowned Palm Island, a 135 metre lighthouse will sit at the ocean end of Dubai Harbour and will offer 360 degree views from the observation deck as well as a luxury hotel.

The 1,858,060 square metre development will also offer a cruise ship terminal, retail space, events arena, shopping mall, yacht club and a number of residences.

The announcement was made by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who said: “We are happy that this new project, which represents a unique and innovative new addition to the region’s tourism landscape, opens up a range of new opportunities to investors. Dubai Harbour creates a venue for new investments that support our vision for this important sector and promises to further accelerate the expansion of the tourism industry in the UAE, which is already growing rapidly.”

The project looks to encourage tourism in the area and is inspired by the Gulf’s historical maritime links. In addition to the water stations, the marina will have two helipads so guests can visit by land, sea or air.

“Our region has had a long and historic relationship with the sea, and today we are seeing another initiative inspired by this age-old tradition that opens up new horizons for development. We have great aspirations for the tourism sector, which is one of the main pillars of our economic development and an important source of national income,” he added.

The development, which follows the ongoing construction of a new marina being built alongside the world's longest indoor ski slope in Dubai , is expected to take four years to finish once work starts and will expand Dubai’s yacht capacity by 50% on completion.

Ayia Napa Marina

Work is underway on a new £190 million superyacht marina complex in Ayia Napa, Cyprus. The new 600 berth marina will be able to accommodate yachts up to 80 metres and is scheduled for completion in 2021. The development, which will also include 190 apartments and a series of villas, is the brainchild of Cypriot entrepreneur Gerasimos Caramondanis and Egyptian investor Naguib Sawiris.

The marina has been specially designed to minimise breakwater to ensure a comfortable stay and will offer a wide range of marine services. The marina will be home to a brand new yacht club and beach club as well as a dedicated crew lounge. The neighbouring Pyare Village will act as the commercial hub of the marina, offering shops, cafés, restaurants and  on-shore activities  along a waterfront pedestrian promenade.

“Cyprus is a safe haven blessed by beautiful nature, year-round sunshine, modern infrastructure, a high standard of living and a genuine culture of warmth and hospitality, strategically located in the eastern Mediterranean at the crossroads of three continents – Europe, Asia and Africa,” said Ayia Napa Marina CEO, Stavros Caramondanis. “The modern, competitive and simple business environment coupled with a high quality of life make Cyprus an ideal place for both visitors and investors.”

The main feature of the development is two towers measuring more than 100 metres in height, which will both offer panoramic views. A mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom apartments will be available, as well as two full-floor penthouse residences.

“We’re not just building a place to live – we’re launching a new era in modern beachfront living,” said Project Partner Naguib Sawiris. “We will exceed the expectations of our residents and our guests and not only transform the Cyprus skyline, but change the way you think about Cyprus.”

With completion expected within the next five years the development is expected to revolutionise  the Cyprus superyacht stay .

Port Takola Yacht Marina

Port Takola Yacht Marina and Boatyard in Krabi, Thailand was unveiled last May — The ambitious plan transformed the 110-acre site and saw the creation of 48 berths that can accommodate yachts up to 40 metres.

The site has been developed by retired Surgeon Admiral of the Royal Thai Navy Dr Suriya na Nagara and Matthew na Nagara and it offers residences, a resort hotel, nature trails, and a museum.

The marina is a 40-minute drive from Krabi International Airport and close to  one of the best James Bond locations to visit on a superyacht  Phang Nga Bay.

“After careful study, we decided to develop a marina to take advantage of the many positive factors of the site, including its perfect shelter and excellent geographical location,” said Admiral Suriya.

Matthew na Nagara added that the plan was to create to a “boutique marina that sits comfortably with the surrounding landscape”.

“We want to combine the legendary Thai hospitality with the management standards expected by sophisticated international yachtsmen,” he said.

The development came at a period when  Thailand’s prime minister announced that he wanted to make the country a superyacht hub . Early last year, Thailand  granted its first foreign-flagged superyacht charter license  which should encourage more yachts to visit the region in the future.

Miraggio Thermal Spa Resort

A new marina opened alongside a  luxury five-star hotel  in Greece last May. The new marina at Miraggio Thermal Spa Resort, located on the east coast of Kassandra, Halkidiki, can accommodate superyachts up to 40 metres.

When developing the marina the main consideration behind construction was reducing environmental impact. Designers also focused on boosting water circulation to minimise bacteria development to help prevent damage to yachts’ hulls.

Academics from Aristotle University conducted a study on wind and currents in the area which shaped the design. The marina has two “bridge type” jetties which are self circulating and self cleaning. They also help to minimise the swell and swing of yachts berthed in the marina.

“Marina Miraggio is one of the best technologically advanced sea developments in Greece because of its overall architecture, positioning and modern engineering methods used for the design and construction of it, even at the primary stages of the design,” said a spokesman for the marina.

As well as its clever design the marina also offers 24-hour security, state-of-the-art electricity and water service pedestals, a pump out station, Wi-Fi and a petrol and diesel gas station. There is also a new restaurant and café on site.

The marina is located at the heart of the Miraggio Thermal Spa Resort, which stretches over more than 330 acres. The hotel's thermal spa is set to become one of the  best luxury spas in the Mediterranean , while its helipad will make it an easy stop off for superyacht owners.

Whether sailing the Greek islands of the Aegean Sea or Ionian Sea or exploring the Greek mainland and Peloponnese on a bareboat or crewed yacht charter, a Greece yacht charter with Borrow a Boat is going to be an unforgettable experience. Book your superyacht charter Greece today!

Why a Superyacht Charter

A very popular yacht charter destination for those on a charter yacht sailing holiday, Greece can be a variety of things to different people. It has a nighttime economy comparable to that of the Balearic Islands (for example on Mykonos in the Cyclades Islands), a history at least as deep as anywhere in the world (Rhodes in the Dodecanese Islands), great gastronomic attractions (such as Antiparos in the Cyclades) and a cosmopolitan flair too (Athens or Volos!). It is possible for two groups on a Greek yacht charter to visit similar places as part of their itineraries and come away with completely different experiences. Let's take a look at where you can go on your yacht charter holiday below.

Destinations

There are seven broad yacht charter destinations you can enjoy on a Greece luxury yacht charter . Let's take a look at them below.

Athens and Saronic Gulf

With the country's capital a core attraction, the Saronic Gulf sits roughly in the middle of of Greek waters. Athens itself is incredibly popular with Greece yacht charter vacationers thanks to its international airport and large number of marinas that are major charter bases. This goes even without speaking of the ancient ruins and bustling cosmopolitan vibe that makes the city worth a city break in its own right.

Sailing west from the Greek capital you soon arrive at the relative peace and quiet of the Saronic Islands. The Saronic Islands have their subcultures and quiet authenticity that is wildly different to that of the capital itself, even while having their own elements of Greek mythos and history attached to them.

Peloponnese

The Peloponnese peninsula to the west of the Saronic Gulf is still within the orbit of Athens. You will likely fly into Athens airport to get here. Even so it is much quieter and astoundingly beautiful. Many Athenians visit this area of the East Mediterranean to escape the heat and buzz of their home city and you will find that the towns cater to them as much as they would Northern Europeans. This adds a lick of authenticity that you might not find so much elsewhere on your Greek yacht charter holiday.

Ionian Islands

To the NW of the capital, and through the Corinth Canal you soon reach the Ionian Sea. The seven main islands include the Ionian island of Corfu, Lefkas, Kefalonia and Zakynthos, all of which have their marinas and nearby international airports. They also have their own cultures and place in history - for instance the Ionian island of Corfu wasn’t successfully invaded by the Ottomans unlike nearly every other Greek island, and has its cultural influences instead from the Venetians and British.

On an Ionian Sea superyacht charter you will find beaches (such as Shipwreck Beach) that can only be accessed by sea and are very popular among Greece yacht charter vacationers as a result.

Cyclades Islands

Including the beautiful island Santorini, the fun and buzz of Mykonos and the gastronomic attractions on Antiparos, the Cyclades Islands offer a wide variety to offer someone on a private yacht charter in their own right.

Just a few hours sail east of Athens, these are perhaps the most popular yacht charter destination across Greek waters. You will find secluded beaches and great sailing on the boisterous Aegean Sea as you do - a great mix of fun on and off the water.

Dodecanese Islands

Just off the Turkish coast, the idyllic Dodecanese Islands have a lot to offer Greece yacht charter vacationers. From the Colossus on Rhodes to the mountainous smaller islands and sustainable holidays focused Kos, there is a wide variety on offer among these Greek islands too. From immersing yourself in the history to anchoring off secluded beaches, you will soon find the Dodecanese Islands a worthwhile yacht charter destination in their own right.

Sporades Islands

Made famous in the Hollywood film Mamma Mia, the Sporades Island chain offer perhaps a bit of Greek island life that you imagine yet never quite see across other islands in the country.

As well as being somewhat less busy and more authentic than the likes of the Saronic Islands for example, you will find the temperatures a little cooler and more comfortable than their more southern neighbours. While the sailing season is shorter, you will find a sandy beach to relax on without feeling you’re in a blast furnace as with so much of the rest of the Aegean islands!

Northern Greece Mainland

You may fly into Thessaloniki or Volos for a Northern Greece yacht charter. Both cities are big and as much fun as Athens but far less focused on the tourist dollar so you may find them more welcoming and authentic than other locations like Mykonos. Setting sail on your crewed motor yacht or sailing yacht from Volos you can explore the Pagasetic Gulf where Jason and the Argonauts were supposed to have set sail from on their famous quest. Beyond, you can reach the Aegean islands of the Sporades and Dodecanese.

From Thessaloniki you may join your charter yacht at Nea Moudania on the Chalkidiki Peninsula - a three pronged peninsula that has a range of destinations on offer from beautiful beaches to the mythical Mount Athos religious community (that women are forbidden from visiting).

Superyacht Charter Greece

With your luxury charter yacht as a base, the crew will look after your needs while you focus on fun and relaxation. On your sailing yacht or motor yacht you can access isolated, secluded beaches inaccessible to others or fun islands such as Ios in the Cyclades.

You can go ashore at different locations to enjoy socialising and the best restaurants in Athens or Rhodes Town and then perhaps disappear to rebalance off a quiet retreat like Skorpios off Lefkada the next. Often the boat charter will carry water toys such as a motor boat, windsurfing gear and jet skis for you to blast around a quiet bay and have fun out of the sight and sound of others.

A Greek superyacht charter is best enjoyed in the summer months between May and September with the peak season in July and August on your sailing yacht or motor yacht luxury charter yacht.

A Greece luxury crewed yacht charter is one of the safest, most luxurious and most convenient ways to travel and enjoy beautiful locations from the quiet of the Sporades Islands to the buzz of Little Venice on Mykonos on your yacht charter holiday.

Luxury, service, privacy and accessibility are just some of the benefits of choosing a luxury crewed yacht charter. Enjoy a vacation in unparalleled comfort and luxury as you sail to some of the world’s most magical destinations; many of which are only accessible by yacht. Here are some of the advantages of choosing this type of trip over a villa or hotel vacation:

Freedom to Explore: A new horizon each morning, personalised 24/7 service, complete privacy, the freedom to sail and explore at leisure and the chance to discover the very best of the culture, cuisine and entertainment at each location.

Experienced Captain and Crew: Our captains and crew have personal experience of the world’s best and safest anchorages and marinas, alongside in-depth local knowledge of cultural attractions, shore dining and entertainment opportunities.

Onboard Entertainment: a range of sophisticated toys all waiting for you in the tender garage. Get your adrenaline rush on the jet skis, paddleboards and kayaks.

Types of Superyacht charter

Here are a selection of charter yachts that you may choose from to enjoy on your Greece superyacht charter holiday, whether on a bareboat charter basis or crewed yacht charter yacht rental basis. Connect with the yacht owner or charter company through us today to arrange your Greece superyacht charter!

Whether sailing yachts or power catamarans, these have a wide beam and shallow draft and make for spacious and comfortable luxury yachts. Even the smaller vessels (15m LOA and up) will have en suite heads in the cabins, and can often carry water toys like jet skis and paddleboards aboard. You can have a crewed catamaran charter or bareboat charter depending on the size of vessel and what you want from a yacht charter vacation.

Motor Yacht

From a catamaran to a luxury crewed motor yacht charter these are faster and often have far more space. Expect a more comfortable, premium experience on motor yacht, ranging from a mini cruiser to top end superyacht charter vessels. You can have crewed yacht charter or bareboat charter depending on the size of vessel with the skipper and crew looking after you.

The larger crewed yachts are often available on a corporate yacht charter or bespoke yacht charter basis as a means of escaping to an out of the way place without distraction. A luxury charter yacht like this will have water toys such as a speed boat, jet ski and diving equipment so you can enjoy water sports even without having to go ashore.

Sailing Yacht

Whether a classic racing yacht or more modern cruiser racer sailing yacht, these sleek, stylish and more traditional sailboats still have the space you need but can sail in near silence with just the sound of the wind and waves as you move along under wind power alone. These can come as something smaller or a 30 metre plus private luxury charter yacht too with water toys and a skipper and crew looking after you on your bespoke yacht charter.

Weather conditions in Greece:

Luxury yacht charters are best when augmented by great weather. The perfect time for a premium charter in Greece are:

Aegean Islands

On the Aegean Sea it can get fiercely hot in the summer months of July and August with temperatures regularly getting well over 30 degrees C. At the same time the north-easterly Meltemi wind can blow up to a Force 7 on the Aegean. As a general rule it starts building from a light breeze at around dawn and reaches peak strength at around 13:00, only easing at around sunset, making for some exciting sailing conditions downwind but lumpy and wet when beating! As a general rule, people prefer to leave the dock early in the morning to avoid the wind at peak strength - that can sit at a F7 in the afternoon.

If very hot weather isn’t your thing, then do consider going in Spring months of May and June or Autumn (September and October) when the temperatures can be far warmer than Northern Europe but still more comfortable.

May - June (Early Season): Average temperatures are in the 18 degree C range though it can get cooler at night. On hotter days it can get up to around 28 degrees C. The sea breeze, the Bora is much less feisty than the Aegean Sea’s Meltemi and never gets above a F6. Expect a bit of rainfall too - that’s what makes the islands so green!

July-August (Peak Season): Temperatures climb again to an average of around 25 degrees C in the day but drop off to a comfortable temperature in the evening. The climate is changing so even here you will see upward variations into the 30s at times. The Bora again never gets too boisterous, though to the south of Lefkas there is the localised Eric wind that blows up considerably more in August.

September - October (Late Season): Things start to cool off and the winds get less boisterous too. Expect 18 degrees C in September and 15 in October. The Ionian Sea remains warm though and perhaps a better idea for swimming than May!

When to Visit Greece

In the peak season of July and August, Greek waters can be incredibly busy with those on charter holidays. This does mean the marinas fill up pretty quickly - as do the bars, tavernas and restaurants! For some, this is part of the fun, but things can get a bit frenetic.

For those who like a quieter sailing experience, perhaps visit in September or October? The waters are still warm, but the villages and towns quieter. You may find some of the key bars and restaurants have closed though.

The Considerations of Voyage: A Primer on Yacht Rental

Yacht Rental Greece

Embarking on a yacht rental in Greece necessitates careful consideration of numerous factors to ensure the journey is not only enjoyable, but also respectful of the delicate marine ecosystems you traverse.

⛵ Seasons and Climate

The Mediterranean climate, with its dry summers and mild, wet winters, dictates the rhythms of life in the Grecian seas. The peak yachting season aligns with the sun-drenched days from May to October. Outside these months, the waters can be turbulent, the skies grey and the weather unpredictable.

⛵ Nautical Skills

A keen understanding of nautical navigation and maritime safety is essential. Many yacht rentals offer the service of an experienced skipper, adept at reading the changing moods of the sea. They serve as your guide through the waters, ensuring a safe passage while you soak in the beauty of the Grecian archipelagos.

⛵ Environmental Consciousness

As an unobtrusive visitor to the marine environment, it is incumbent upon you to uphold a sense of environmental stewardship. Waste disposal, energy consumption, and respect for local wildlife are all aspects that need to be managed responsibly to protect the enchanting biodiversity of the Grecian seas.

The Ideal Vessel: Choosing Your Yacht

The choice of your vessel is paramount, and largely dependent on the desired balance of luxury, speed, and capacity. For the sun-soaked waters of Greece, several types of yachts offer a unique blend of these features.

⛵ The Luxury Superyacht

For those seeking utmost indulgence, the luxury superyacht is an unrivalled choice. Equipped with an array of modern amenities, the superyacht offers a level of comfort that rivals any five-star resort. Yet, it goes beyond this. Imagine waking to a changing view each morning, the endless blue stretching out before you as the shoreline transforms from the honey-hued cliffs of Santorini to the verdant hills of Zakynthos.

⛵ The Sleek Catamaran

The catamaran offers stability and ample space, with its twin-hulled design. This is an ideal choice for families or larger groups. Their shallower draft allows you to navigate closer to the islands, exploring hidden coves and secluded beaches. The gentle rhythm of the catamaran ensures a smooth journey across the placid summer seas of Greece.

⛵ The Classic Sailing Yacht

For the true sailing aficionado, there is nothing quite like a traditional sailing yacht. Harnessing the power of the wind, these vessels offer a more intimate experience with the elements. Sailing yachts demand a greater degree of skill and knowledge, but reward with an exhilarating connection to the sea and the wind.

In the radiant glow of the Grecian sun and the lull of the undulating sea, the act of yachting in Greece becomes not just a journey through space, but also through time. A voyage that carries the promise of encounters with awe-inspiring ecosystems, of rediscovering the ancient roots of Western civilisation, and of basking in the tranquil luxury that only a yacht can offer. It is, in essence, a way of becoming part of the timeless narrative of the sea.

Navigating Your Grecian Voyage: Addressing Common Queries

In our shared voyage across the sparkling waters and sun-drenched isles of Greece, we understand that many questions may arise. Here, we anticipate your inquiries, addressing them in the spirit of shared discovery and our mutual fascination for this ancient sea-bound nation.

What is the best time to rent a yacht in Greece?

The best time to embark on a yachting journey in Greece is typically between May and October, when the Mediterranean climate offers warm, sun-filled days and calm seas. This period is the high season for yacht rentals, offering a perfect blend of favourable weather and vibrant island life.

What kind of yacht should I rent?

The choice of yacht is largely dependent on your personal preferences and needs. For larger groups and families, a catamaran offers ample space and stability. If luxury and comfort are paramount, consider a superyacht, which offers a host of modern amenities. For those seeking a more intimate connection with the sea, a traditional sailing yacht can be an exhilarating choice.

Do I need a license to sail in Greece?

The Greek authorities require at least one member of the crew to have a valid International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or an equivalent national certificate from your country of residence. If you do not have sailing qualifications, hiring a skipper is a popular option. The skipper can safely navigate the boat while you relax and enjoy the journey.

How can I respect the environment during my yacht rental?

Practicing environmentally friendly sailing involves a variety of measures. Be mindful of waste disposal - many yachts are equipped with holding tanks or you can dispose of waste at port facilities. Limit your use of single-use plastics on board, and respect the local wildlife by maintaining a safe distance. Finally, be conscious of your energy consumption and try to maximise the use of sails over the engine when possible.

Can I visit multiple islands during my yacht rental?

Absolutely. The beauty of renting a yacht is the freedom it offers to explore multiple destinations. The Greek islands are well-suited to island hopping, with many desirable locations in close proximity to one another. This allows you to discover the unique charm of each island at your own pace.

In sharing these answers, we hope to enhance your understanding of what a yachting adventure in Greece entails. As always, our journey is enriched by your curiosity, and we stand ready to navigate these enchanting waters alongside you.

New superyacht marina planned for Greece

> Subscriber-only , By Manos Roudas 2023-03-13T16:55:00+00:00

The proposed investment concerns the development of a 1,797-acre site in Astakos

Plans to develop the industrial port of Platygiali-Astakos into a new superyacht marina were filed recently with Enterprise Greece.

The proposed investment concerns the redevelopment of approximately 1,797 acres in the Marine Industrial Area of Platygiali, located in the bay of Astakos in Aitoloakarnania, and includes the conversion of the whole area into a tourist port for megayachts with approximately 400 berths, of which half would be for boats over 30m.

There are also plans for the development of a business park, holiday homes, and the provision of high-quality tourism and leisure services.

Some 1,150 new jobs are expected to be created through the €524m investment by the Astakos Terminal International Trade and Service Provision Company. The investment body intends to develop the largest megayacht marina in the Mediterranean, strengthening the tourism development of the area with environmentally friendly practices.

Enterprise Greece is the national body, under the supervision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that attracts foreign direct investment in Greece and promotes the export of Greek products and services abroad.
