An insider’s sailing guide to West Mediterranean

Sailing in the Mediterranean on an Oyster Sailboat

With a chic aesthetic that extends from the French Riviera’s charming beachfront cafes all the way to Italy’s sprawling vineyards, you’ll be instantly impressed when sailing in the West Mediterranean.

Sparkling azure waters welcome you to this exciting cruising region. Its golden-sand beaches are the ideal place to relax with a cocktail, or to use as a starting point to hike its many mountainous peaks. That’s why  Mediterranean sailing holidays  - and particularly the West Med - is so popular. Read on to learn why.

CRUISING GUIDE: SAILING IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

The best time to visit the West Mediterranean is in the heart of the European summer season, from July to August. Those on sailing yacht charters will find the weather generally stays brilliantly warm and sunny throughout.

In these months temperatures average 32°C/89.6°F in Italy and 33°C/91.4°F in Spain. With so much sunshine you’ll find it hard to drag yourself away from the many beautiful bays and coves, making it the perfect time for a skippered Mediterranean yacht charter.

Cruising here is generally very smooth, with good weather and tideless waters prevailing.

The glittering coastline of the West Med is pure bliss for charterers, with exciting destinations at every turn. However, our skippered Mediterranean yacht charters make it extra special. Every one of our luxury sailing yachts is handcrafted with liveaboard cruising in mind, with a spacious design that you’ll look forward to relaxing in after a long day of exploring.

Our range of luxury sailing yachts for charter provide the perfect base to explore locations such as the Amalfi Coast, Aeolian Islands, Sicily, Corsica, Sardinia, Palma and the Balearics, and our professional onboard crew have a knowledge of the region that equals that of the locals.

Discover Oyster luxury sailing yachts charter , or read on to learn more about sailing in Europe.

Sailing in ‌Amalfi

Italy’s Amalfi Coast is fabulously picturesque, perched dramatically on a cliff-face and looking out onto the sparkling turquoise ocean. Nearby Positano promises pastel-coloured houses and independent boutiques, while Sorrento - known as the gateway to the Amalfi Coast - has inspired many literary legends with its grand architecture and abundance of lemon trees. In Naples, Mount Vesuvius’ volcanic hiking trail offers a chance to learn more about the history of the area.

Although the Amalfi Coast is beautiful all year round, June, July and August are the best months to visit on a luxury yacht charter. Mediterranean flowers will be in full bloom, filling the air with the sweet scent of lemon and orange blossom. Towns and villages buzz with life, whilst private coves await those who seek something a bit more tranquil; a summertime Amalfi sailing charter has something for everyone.

Oyster’s skippered Mediterranean yacht charters along the Amalfi Coast generally include Naples, Sorrento and the islands of Ischia, Vesuvius, Positano and Capri.

Sailing in Corsica

The mountainous French island of Corsica has so much to offer: rugged wilderness; a rich and unique cuisine; historic monuments dating back the Romans; the list goes on. One of France’s least-developed regions, crewed sailing yacht charters in Corsica provide a chance to experience its unspoilt natural beauty. Meanwhile, neighbouring Sardinia is filled with some of the most paradisiacal white-sand beaches you'll ever come across when sailing in Europe. Promising romance, incredible diving spots and lively local culture, this is an island you’ll struggle to drag yourself away from.

July and August are the perfect months to sail in the Mediterranean as the weather is delightfully warm and the season is in full swing, meaning you’ll have your choice of delicious restaurants to dine at.

Sailing in Sardinia

Sardinia is so alluring that many people don’t want to leave after their skippered Mediterranean yacht charter is over. Mediterranean vacationing doesn’t get much better than sailing around this heavenly Italian island, with its 2,000km of glorious coastline. On the northeast of the island, Olbia’s old town is full of chic boutiques, bars and cafes looking onto bustling piazzas. Drop anchor in glamorous Costa Smeralda, the preferred holiday spot of A-listers and honeymooners. Sardinia is full of history, with Bronze Age relics waiting to be discovered at every stop along the way.

Sardinia is magical all year round, but the best time to visit is from late June to the end of September when all the local shops and restaurants are open for business. July offers 12 glorious hours of sunshine, and the chance to see exhilarating local events such as the S’Ardia Horse Race.

Oyster sailing charters in the Corsica and Sardinia area generally cruise between Bonifacio and Olbia to include the beautiful Maddalena islands.

Sailing in Sicily and the Aeolian Islands

With its dramatic volcanic peaks and jaw-droppingly beautiful coves, it’s easy to fall in love with Sicily. A true hub for sailing in the Mediterranean, Sicily offers its own mouth-watering recipes, relying on fresh, locally grown produce to create classic dishes such as Pasta alla Norma. The Unesco-protected Aeolian Islands of Vulcano, Lipari, Salina, Panarea, Stromboli, Filicudi and Alicudi are equally stunning. Their crystal-clear waters provide the perfect snorkelling ground.

Visit in the summer months to make the most of the beautiful walking and cycling routes, taking in scenery that you might not otherwise see. This is also the best time to visit the island’s stunning beaches.

Our skippered Mediterranean yacht charters in the Aeolian islands usually start and finish in Milazzo, Sicily.

Sailing in Palma, Mallorca and the Balearic Islands

Sailing in the Mediterranean, and especially Palma and the Balearics, offers a tantalising mix of vibrant beaches, prehistoric ruins and traditional tapas. And, of course, that seemingly eternal sunshine, which gives the islands a 24/7 holiday feel. In Mallorca you will be astounded by the number of sensational beaches. When you’re not lying on your towel sunning yourself - cocktail or a glass of Cava in hand - head up into the hills to discover ancient monasteries, or into Palma to explore the capital's vibrant nightlife. However, don’t limit yourselves to the largest of the Balearics; there are so many more to explore across Europe.

When you should go depends on what you are looking for on your skippered Mediterranean yacht charters - Mediterranean temperatures are delightfully hot in the peak months of July and August - perfect for a beach holiday. What’s more, this is when the nightlife is at its busiest and best.

Oyster sailing charters generally start in Palma and can include the islands of Ibiza and Menorca.

No wonder the Mediterranean region is a popular destination amongst travellers, as its natural features, wonderful beaches, the boat trips offered and the climate make the area a very pleasant one. This article lists all the important information that is worth noting for anyone who would like to visit the region.

Facts about the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean Sea is surrounded by three continents: Europe from the North, Asia from the East and Africa from the South. It might be a surprising fact that its territory is nearly 2, 520, 000 km2, and the length of its coastline is close to 46, 000 kilometers .

Countries of the Mediterranean region:

Spain, France, Italy, Malta, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus

Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel (and the Gaza Strip)

Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco

Larger islands of the Mediterranean:

Cyprus, Rhodes, Lesbos, Crete, the Maltese Islands, Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, Menorca, Mallorca, Ibiza. There are several great countries and islands located in the Mediterranean region. If we are planning on renting a boat, there are numerous spots to discover while we can spend plenty of time on the Mediterranean Sea. A wide variety of options are available, and we might want to get informed about all the different opportunities in advance; making a round trip on a crewed yacht we own might be the most exciting activity.

Geographical features of the Mediterranean

We are dealing with a versatile but contrasting area with dozens of sights that are worth visiting from a geographical point of view. High mountains, rocky shores, waterfalls, forests, and a desert – all the treasures nature has to offer. We can cruise through the shores of several countries on well-organized trips. The area has many ports, the list of which can be found above our information section, under the Mediterranean maps tab.

The climate of the Mediterranean

The region has a Mediterranean climate . Winters are usually mild, but a certain amount of precipitation may be expected during this period. Summers are hot and dry. The mean annual temperature is around 14°C, but even in the coldest months, the temperature never drops below 0°C. During such periods the average temperature is 4°C. This is the reason why the region is a perfect destination during all seasons. We should seek information on the weather of the chosen countries in order to have a smooth holiday.

The gastronomy of the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean region’s sailing paradise has especially diverse gastronomy. You can just rent a boat and start exploring the Adriatic while enjoying culinary adventures at the same time. Besides sailing, swimming and cultural programs, food is also very important. Seafood is popular, but the fact that the Croatians and the Greeks love meat and the Italians are passionate about pasta and delicious wines makes the region even more ideal for lunch or dinner. Visit as many countries as you can, and dive into the local gastronomy.

Traveling in the Mediterranean

As there are several countries and shores located along the Mediterranean Sea, we can choose from various opportunities to reach our destination. Browsing through the flights offered by the different airlines, we may get very cheap tickets if we book on time. We can consider going by car or taking a train between two countries; however, the greatest experience is exploring by renting a boat. This way the travel itself becomes an experience of a lifetime, and we will be able to see places that we couldn’t discover any other way.

Crewed yacht charter in the Mediterranean

Yacht charter in the mediterranean – the main seasons.

It is a great experience to take our boat out in the Mediterranean region; the sailing season is very long thanks to the mild weather. We will give you a brief overview of the seasons different characteristics and the spots that you should definitely visit. In our article, we will provide you with more details below.

In the autumn

If you do not insist on visiting in the hottest period, the autumn season is perfect for exploring the Mediterranean region as there are no large crowds and the temperatures are also milder. You should still be careful, as the weather often becomes unpredictable in the spring and autumn, combined with strong winds from time to time. During this time, it is safer to stay close to the marinas.

In the winter

In the winter, it is recommended to monitor the weather forecast due to the variable conditions and frequent storms. In this season, the most popular Spanish cities are Valencia, Barcelona and Cartagena. The latter is a perfect starting point when exploring the Balearic Islands, France and Corsica. Licata and Marina di Ragusa are two very popular destinations on the largest island of the Mediterranean Sea: Sicily. Read more about Sicily sailing , and Spain sailing .

In the Spring

The region of the Mediterranean Sea is beautiful in the autumn, and it is also very peaceful around here during this time. In this period, we suggest that you head towards Croatia, Greece, Sicily, Sardinia or the Balearic Islands. In Greece, we particularly recommend visiting Lefkada – belonging to the Ionian Islands – in the west. The town of Préveza in the southwest and the famous island of Crete are also excellent choices. Read more about Croatia sailing , Greece sailing , and sailing in Sardinia .

In the summer

When summer is approaching, many people sail on the Mediterranean Sea; the busiest months are July and August. Sardinia is among the most popular sailing destinations ; the northern and northeastern parts are rich in anchorages, even though they can still get full in the summer. There is a strong summer wind present on the island, so it is recommended to sail counter-clockwise. Would you prefer to avoid large crowds? Spain and France, as well as the southern part of Sardinia, Tunisia, the northern part of the Aegean Sea, and the Peloponnese, are all considered quiet regions. We are independent yacht charter specialists who offer brokerage services for privately owned crewed charter yacht vacations. We offer free impartial travel advice and we have a deep knowledge of the charter vacation industry. Our team travels the globe meeting with professional crews who own and run the yachts available for you to hire.

We do not dilute our service by offering bareboat charters, as we are specialists in the field of crewed yacht charters and we stick to what we know best. We only recommend yachts that we have personal knowledge of to ensure that you have a great floating vacation!

Although we are based in the Caribbean, we travel to Europe and the rest of the world during the summer months to check out the best sailing boats and resorts to recommend to our clients. We want to be certain the destinations we suggest will provide you with exactly what you are looking for. We do not rely solely on the yacht crew’s knowledge; we explore the islands personally so we can advise you with genuine first-hand expertise.

Our goal is to build a long lasting relationship with our clients to ensure repeat business and generate referrals. We want you to have the best sailing vacation ever – again and again!

What Our Clients Say

“Thank you for finding the perfect charter yacht for our sailing vacation this winter in the Caribbean. The yacht, crew and destinations were magical. We can’t wait to book with you again.”

Thank you for a wonderful adventure. We have wanted to visit the Grenadines for a long time and we’re so very happy that you arranged this cruise for us. Such a great trip with a terrific Captain & Chef.

To Where Can I Charter?

Skippered yacht charters are available in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and the  rest of the World . The main seasons are December to May for  Caribbean charters , May to September for Mediterranean charters and it depends on your desired destination for the rest of the World as to the best time to visit. You could also visit the Caribbean or Mediterranean out of season if you wish.

To find your dream destination, take a look at our Destinations section. Or  contact  us today to discuss your requirements, or to talk about chartering in locations out of season to enjoy the same level of luxury at a fraction of the cost.

What Types of Yachts Are Available?

There are numerous different types of yachts available for your vacation and we can assist you in selecting the right yacht. Take a look at our Yachts Section and choose between:

Monohull Yachts  – These are traditional sailing yachts where you experience the invigorating thrill of heeling over as you sail to windward. Monohull yachts tend to have a great layout for families and honeymooners.

Catamaran Yachts  – Catamarans have plenty of usable deck space. They offer a large entertaining area at the stern of the yacht, making them ideal if several couples are sharing the yacht.

Motor Yachts  – Motor yachts have one significant feature – speed! They usually carry a lot of watersports equipment and they are great fun for any age group.

Power Catamarans provide more living space for clients who prefer power rather than sail.

Classic Yachts are Monohull yachts but of an older vintage, often made from wood.

Expedition Yachts are great for visiting more remote destinations.

Super Yachts are the ultimate in luxury and are over 100 ft or 30 m in length. They can be a Sailing Yacht, Monohull, Catamaran or Motor Yacht.

We can help you select the right yacht that is perfect for your needs,  and more importantly the yacht with an ideal crew match.

Your Sailing Area

Saronic islands, greece.

With easy access from the mainland airport of Athens, Zorba will set the sails and head straight for the Saronic Islands as you spend the next week under sail, discovering all that the islands have to offer. Your route will entirely depend on the wind and weather and also the feeling of all the guests onboard.

As well as a plethora of uninhabited islands that make for great remote escapes off the beaten track and away from the tourist hustle and bustle; the islands also consist of the inhabited main islands of Aegina, Agistri and Poros. The islands of Hydra and Dokos are also sometimes included in this archipelago.

From afternoon anchorages on remote islands perfectly lined with crystal coves for swimming and snorkelling to the very best, tried and tested tavernas on the main islands, there won’t be time to see it all and you’ll be longing to return before you’ve even stepped foot off the boat.

Greek Island Highlights

Each island certainly has its own personality and although all of them showcase the very best of Greek hospitality, they cater for all ages and interests. The UNESCO heritage site of the ancient theatre in Epidavros is a bucket list visit for many and one that we highly recommend. Whilst on this coast, the sunken city of Epidavros is also worth a snorkel. Onto the island of Aegina and the architectural wonders of the ancient city of Temple of Aphaia impressively built on the hill – also known as Pistachio Island. The Saronic showpiece has to be Hydra with its ancient port carefully lined with well-preserved stone houses rising from a chic, history-charged harbour. Known as t he jewel of the Saronic’s Hydra has no car traffic so donkeys are the best way to get around!

The Temple of Poseidon sits on the southerly point of mainland Greece and is definitely worth the sail over as it sits towering over the anchorage with the impressive view. The small fishing village of Perdika is where you can find the nicest people in the world and our secret harbour (with one family-run taverna and no shop) that can fit only 7 boats!

Zorba Greece

All voyages for Zorba

Guest berths: 9 Rig: Sloop

Zorba lives up to her name as she takes guests on unforgettable, authentically Greek sailing holidays!

Zorba is a modern and comfortable Beneteau Cyclades 50.5. She has five private cabins for guests, made up with four doubles and one twin bunk cabin ; all share 3 bathrooms with showers. With a generous saloon and a well-equipped galley, Zorba was built with charter and guest comfort at the forefront of her design. With a dropped transom and outdoor seating area at the stern, Zorba gives guests the perfect access to that crystal clear Mediterranean water!

A sailing holiday in Greece with Zorba is accessible to all ages and abilities. Her simple rig makes her an easy sail with winch systems and modern navigation equipment. That being said, she’s a great boat to sail whether you’re an experienced sailor looking for some sunshine or a novice wanting to try something new.

Her owners and skippers absolutely love what they do and that’s very evident for guests to see and even better to experience first hand. They are well tuned to all abilities and ages, from family charters with young children to groups of friends or voyages for couples and solo travellers. They tailor every trip to suit their guests needs so if you simply want to sit back, enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine and enjoy the cuisine of the local tavernas – that’s fine too!

A sailing holiday on Zorba is certainly one that will leave you with long-lasting memories. Read more about what to expect from Life on Board Zorba here.

Zorba Deck plan

Sailing with Zorba in Greece will leave long-lasting memories and more than likely see you longing to return. A modern Beneteau Cyclades 50.5, Zorba is owned and managed by Aga and Greg, who share a real passion for Greece both from the water and on the land. Comfortable, relaxed, and offering an abundance of sunshine sailing, Zorba is the perfect yacht to show guests a truly authentic sailing holiday in Greece.

A typical Day

After a relaxed breakfast, spend a few hours sailing before anchoring up in crystal clear waters to explore historical ruins ashore, sunbathe or snorkel away the afternoon. Hoist the sails again to find a new spot for the night before enjoying dinner ashore in a traditional Greek Taverna, specially hand-picked by Aga and Greg.

Getting involved

Your sailing holiday in Greece is truly as you make it. Zorba is a fun and simple boat to sail and can be sailed by Greg alone if guests prefer a more relaxing experience. That being said, the larger Saronic Gulf gives some great winds for sailing for those wanting to learn the ropes in a safe and supported environment. Greg used to be a sailing instructor so he loves to share his knowledge and skill with guests. From knot tying to basic navigation, taking the helm and reading the local charts, guests are welcome to get involved as much or as little as they’d like.

Read more about what to expect from a typical day on the water with Zorba and what to expect from life onboard.

Zorba transom guests swimming

The price also reflects the half board nature of this holiday as explained in Zorba’s life on board section . Breakfast and lunch are included but you will dine out in traditional tavernas for your evening meals. This is at the cost of the guest, but you’ll find a delicious local spread for as little as 15€ per person – and that even includes the wine! There is also a board cash of €250pp payable upon arrival that covers fuel, marina fees and water per person. This is reflected in the ticket price advertised and is based purely on the economics of Greece still being such a cash based society.

From solo travellers to couples to groups of families or friends, there is something for everyone on this sailing adventure. Take Zorba for a whole yacht charter in Greece with your friends and family, or join as a couple looking to make new memories and friends from all over the world. Swim, snorkel and make use of the boat SUP, which are all included in your ticket price!

Greece Zorba Swimming

Zorba has limited space for possessions, so please be considerate and travel as light as possible. There is no storage for rigid cases, so please bring your items in a soft bag or rucksack.

We recommend a travelling light principal with lots of lightweight, easy-drying layers. Below is a list of recommended items, these are not mandatory and those that have sailed before may have their own preferences!

  • Light shoes/trainers (with good grip)
  • Flip flips, sandals OR Crocs
  • Swimsuits and a swim towel
  • Wash towel – micro fibres are great for lightweight and quick-drying
  • Lightweight, quick-dry clothes

It can be quite a few degrees colder out at sea so please bring layers even if the forecast seems like a warm week!

  • Warm, windproof and waterproof coat
  • Sun cream (please use reef safe, eco products where possible)
  • Sunglasses and a sun hat/cap
  • Small personal first aid kit and any medication you may need
  • Camera/binoculars
  • Personal wash kit (please use reef safe, eco products where possible)
  • Swim shoes to ensure you dodge those pesky Greek sea urchins…!
  • Cash – EUROS. Greece is still a heavily cash-based society
  • Charging cables for personal devices and EU 2pin adaptor for use in cabins (there are 12v USB sockets to charge devices during the day by the chart table if needed)
  • A good book to read!
  • Consider a small backpack/bag for onshore exploring

SAMPLE MENU FOR Zorba

Please note that this is an example of what you may be served. Aga will be your host and main chef although guests tend to get involved with all aspects of life on board Zorba. Aga will go shopping on the first day and welcomes guests to join her so everyone’s preferences can be considered.

  • Selection of tea, freshly ground coffee and fruit juices
  • Fruits with nuts, oats, coconut with fresh Greek yoghurt, honey and eggs.
  • Typical Greek salad with fresh feta; tzatziki with bread; local goat cheese and figs

Evening meals are more often than not from a very considered list of favourite Greek tavernas. Local cuisine, fresh fish and seafood can be purchased at a relatively low local cost..

  • Half board (breakfast, lunch and snacks)
  • All bedding (pillow, sheets & duvet)
  • Full crew plus tuition

GETTING THERE

Aegina, greece.

Flights go direct to Athens International airport from London Standsted with Ryanair, and London Gatwick with Wizz Air, British Airways and easyJet.

You’ll then need to take a taxi from the airport to Piraeus port and take a ferry to Aegina port, which takes about 40 minutes to 1 hour. There are many different ferry options that run throughout the day, so please use the Ferry Scanner t o find timetables. You can pre-book tickets, or it is easy to buy a passenger ferry ticket at the port on the day.

Zorba’s crew can assist you in arranging an airport/hotel transfer to take you to the port and will arrange for a taxi at Aegina Port to pick you up and take you to Perdika, where the boat will be moored. This is a lovely island with lots of places to swim and relax before you board the boat.
