VMT Madeira Catamaran tours are the most popular on the island, enjoyed by tourists during both the summer and winter months. There are three VMT catamarans that we use, called “Sea the Best”, “Sea Nature” and “Sea Pleasure”. Specializing in searching for dolphins and whales, we will give you a free ride if you do not get to see anything when you go on your trip. The chances of you being able to see dolphins or whales however are over 90%. This boat tour takes about 3 hours and goes out twice a day, every day. It anchors in front of the highest sea cliff in Europe, Cabo Girão, for a swim and a chance to do some snorkeling. The Catamarans are quite big, take up to 98 people, have a covered area, and have refreshments and toilets onboard. There are additional summer trips like the sunset trip to choose from.

Meeting Point

The meeting point for the VMT Madeira Catamaran Tours is at the new marina in the center of Funchal . You have to meet there 20 minutes before departure .

Our company has been operating for the last nine years, taking clients out to sea to watch dolphins, whales and turtles in their natural habitat, on our first catamaran "Sea Pleasure". This catamaran is a 65 foot 'Ocean Voyager', manufactured by CIM Shipyard – La Rochelle, France, with a capacity for 70 passengers.

Due to increasing demand for this activity, especially in the summer months, we took delivery of a second catamaran in June 2008. This catamaran "Sea the Best" is a 75 foot 'Taiti', manufactured by Fontaine-Pajot – La Rochelle, France, with a capacity for 98 passengers.

On your first trip with us, if there are no sightings of cetaceans (neither dolphins nor whales), we offer you a second trip entirely free.

Come aboard one of our comfortable catamarans for a relaxing trip along the South coast of Madeira.

The duration of the trip is 3 hours, with a strong possibility of spotting whales and dolphins in all their magnitude and in their natural habitat.

During the summer months there is a possibility for a stop for swimming below the cliffs of ?Cabo Girão?, one of the highest sea cliffs in the world at 580 m in altitude.

During the trip, our qualified crew will give you detailed information in various languages about the species of cetaceans you are seeing, as well as other technical and historic information to ensure a complete and unique experience.

Discover the beauty of Madeira Sea and Coast line on board our catamaran. Possibility to see dolphins, whales and turtles. In the Summer you have the chance to swim and do snorkeling.

"Cabo Girão"

Cabo Girão is located 9km by the sea in the southern part of the Island. It is the second highest cliff in the world, 580 meters high. In the summer we stop along this bay so that passengers have the opportunity to dive in the crystal clear waters.

"Looking for dolphins  and whales"

Strong Possibility of seeing, several species of dolphins, whales or even turtles. Most of these species reside in our region throughout the year while other species are present only by passage. We recall that they are free animals in their natural habitat.

We are alerted to the environmental issue, the oceans are increasingly facing serious threats, such as pollution, destruction of habitats and disappearance of biodiversity. As Humans, we must take the initiative to respect and protect the ocean, avoiding trash at sea, plastics among others that damage the ecosystem.

Bow Riding Dolphins!

We had a great morning trip, spending time watching common bottlenose dolphins and even enjoying them bow-riding the front of the catamaran! We also spotted a loggerhead turtle. I was very impressed when the crew stopped several times to pick up floating plastics and they were very aware of not disturbing the dolphins by chasing them around. Catamaran was spotless and staff friendly. Recommended!

Great ethical company

Was a great tour the crew were friendly. We saw pilot whales, bottle nose dolphins and a sun fish. What was great is that they strictly stuck to the rules and let the animals come to us and observed the 10 minute rule when with the animals which many other tours don’t. They are clearly interested in promoting eco tourism and as such I can recommend.

Brilliant morning watching dolphins, and much to everyone's surprise a Monk Seal was spotted on our way back to the marina.

Fantastic trip

We booked the 3hr afternoon catamaran trip. We were blown away with seeing a large quantity of bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales and incredibly also loggerhead turtles and Portugese man o' war jellyfish. The dolphins put on an amazing display alongside the catamaran. The crew were friendly and very knowledgeable.If you're thinking of doing a catamaran trip then I would really recommend VMT as not only do they do a brilliant trip, they also reaĺly care about the wildlife and environmental and collect plastic and other rubbish out of the sea during the trip and are the only company to do this. The ticket also includes a yellow bus ticket to the marina.Book it - I'm sure you won't be disappointed and even though obviously sightings can't be guaranteed,this company will do their best to find wildlife and employ a "spotter" on the top deck.

Exciting afternoon on the water

We saw a turtle as we left harbour - and then several bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales out at sea. This was exciting as sightings can't be guaranteed. We woke up that morning due to sail at 10.30 but there was a thick fog. VMT called us to say we wouldn't sail but offered us the chance to cancel or go out that afternoon at 3. We chose to go and the weather was great. After seeing the various sea life, we sailed west along the coast to Cap Gerao and then back to harbour with views along the coast. Our vessel was VMT's largest catamaran and it was not full, with plenty of space for us all to look out. Plenty of cover. The crew were great, regularly telling us what was happening and walking round to talk to us. The ship had a nice bar with very reasonably priced drinks. One of the crew took photos and so we bought one as a nice memento of the trip. There was no pressure to have a picture taken or to buy it. We felt safe and well looked after. VMT deserve their good reviews, and I would highly recommend them. A tip - the check-in booth is not in the main marina (where VMT do have a shop and ticket office), but the next dock along where the tripper boats are all moored.

Want to go on a sea tomorrow and I started wondering what time to go .. So, which one would you recommend.. 10;30 or 15:00 ?

It does not really make any differance but the afternoon is sometimes better if yu want to avoid the very hot mid-day sun. Whales and dolphins are being regularly seen at the moment but you need to pre book as the catamarans are often full at this time of year.

the thing is that I already have two tickets, I kinda won them two months ago. So, do I need to call them or is it possible if I just show up ? Since its my last day on the island I really hope to go and see dolphins.

I would turn up for the 10:30am sailing if you don't get on the Catamaram for the 10:30am trip there is a chance you will make the next one.

Definately call first,some days both caramaransa are full for both trips and also for the sunset trips.

We went on the Sea Born cat at the 3pm sailing and thoroughly enjoyed the experience - saw loads of dolphins but no whales or turtles. The later sailing is particulary advised if you wish to avoid sunburn.
