The Oyster 575 is a popular 17.3m (57.6ft) bluewater cruising yacht from the dynamic design partnership of Oyster Yachts and Humphreys Yacht Design.

Offered as a new-build Oyster between 2011 and 2018, this luxury sailboat underwent an interior redesign with subtle changes to her layout, using the invaluable feedback of our Oyster Owners on their world travels.

The final result was a revised 575, with superyacht qualities inspired by the award-winning  Oyster 625  bluewater cruiser. This included the addition of Oyster’s signature ‘Seascape’ windows for breathtaking views out from her saloon and the raising of her chart area to the same level as the saloon seating, allowing her chart table to flow seamlessly into the surrounding joinery.

A beautifully crafted companionway staircase was also added to lead guests below decks, adding to the feeling of quality and security on this luxury sailboat, and the forward guest cabin was expanded with direct access to the forward head.

Subtle joinery enhancements included the addition of sculpted headliners, upgraded cabin doors and door furniture, custom air-conditioning vents and accent lighting in the saloon, and more contemporary styling in the heads. On the practical side, her standard specification was raised to include Formula spars, a Volvo D3 engine and Raymarine i70 sailing instruments.

Pure hull lines from Humphreys Yacht Design make the Oyster 575 a fast passage-maker and an effortless bluewater cruising yacht. She boasts an exhilarating performance that placed her as the perfect Oyster for the nine owners who chose her as their entries for the 2017-19 Oyster World Rally.

Lyman-Morse took an innovative approach to the construction of the new Hood 57 LM custom motor yacht being developed in a collaboration with C.W. Hood Yachts and Stephens Waring Yacht Design . A Spirit of Tradition show-stopper built at Lyman-Morse’s boat building facility in Thomaston, Maine , it brings head-turning elegance to the Express-Cruiser market.

Perfect for weekend cruising and entertaining, the Hood 57 LM features custom bead-blasted stainless-steel hardware on deck and a spiral staircase leading to the flydeck. These elements were constructed at Lyman-Morse Fabrication . The yacht’s unique open-format cockpit with direct access to the water and dock, along with well-founded accommodations for four, will ensure fun times on the water for family and friends.

This 57-foot power yacht was launched for sea trials in October 2020 and was nominated in January 2021 by the editors of Classic Boat Magazine as the Best New Powered Vessel.

Design & Construction

Two interesting new techniques are being utilized in the construction of this 57’ high-performance cruiser. First, to achieve the expected 39 knots from the Volvo Penta’s IPS 1350 integrated propulsion system, the yacht is engineered with weight-control and strength as a priority.

Stephens Waring Yacht Design provided innovative composite construction details that hybridize wood and fiberglass into a contemporary build method.

Improving Ergonomics in Boat Building

Second, for this new project, Lyman-Morse is employing a new overhead crane system to facilitate an ergonomically efficient building environment for the boat building crew. Taking the module-building practice employed on Anna to the next level, they will build the hull in four separate parts:

• The bottom module, which is about 50’ in length by 15’ in width that includes the stem of the boat
• Both topsides sections, port and starboard, that run from the stem aft to the transom
• The curved transom section

Modular Wood-Composite Boat Building

The process starts with the jig that was precisely cut by Lyman-Morse’s Haas GR-712 CNC machine from direct digital inputs. Once assembled, the jig yields such a perfect form that the wooden sheathing for the bottom along with the pre-made curved transom can be installed.

Meanwhile, the tricky internal longitudinal structural stringers, using CNC machined foam formers that have their structural epoxy laminate completed, are constructed simultaneously with the bottom sheathing. To eliminate the ergonomically difficult work of working on an upside-down part, the bottom is lifted off the jig using the overhead crane, rotated to the upright orientation and placed in a cradle which then allows the inner structural laminate to be installed and epoxy-infused.

Next the pre-made internal longitudinal stringers are lifted and placed in reliefs that have been machined into the jig to perfectly locate them in the hull. Then the bottom, with its inner skin installed, is lifted, rotated back to the inverted orientation, and put back on the jig. An epoxy adhesive is used to bond the longitudinals to the hull bottom.

The topside planking follows, finishing up with a structural epoxy-impregnated laminate as the outer skin for even distribution and incredible strength. After the hull is rotated to the upright position and the jig removed, the topsides will have their structural inner skin vacuum bagged in place and the joints between the four separate parts will be joined together, creating a structural monocoque assembly.

Interior Modules and Systems Installation

After rolling the hull, it and the deck are moved to Lyman-Morse’s Building 11, where the modular sub-structures — cabin soles, deck elements, and interior assemblies — are preinstalled to double-check structural fit. Once those major elements are checked off, next comes major systems including propulsion modules, twin diesel engines, and the critical soundproofing. For reducing motion, the Hood 57 will also feature a Seakeeper computer controlled anti-roll gyro system.

Northern Marine 57

If your nautical fantasies include nudging an iceberg to gather thousand-year-old ice for your drinks, pushing up a steamy jungle river or traversing the expanses of sea between those destinations, then the Northern Marine 57 may be the yacht of your dreams.

She’s an honest and serious expedition trawler for a husband-and-wife team. The word “honest crops up regularly when discussing this yacht. Unlike many of the faux expedition yachts attempting to capitalize on the market for adventure travel, the 5700 Series Expedition Trawlers are the real thing. From the bulbous bow to the array of antennas on the radar mast, everything aboard this yacht is done to make her rugged, seaworthy and easy to maintain. There are no styling touches, no gewgaws and no frills.

At a garden party of pretty white yachts, the Northern Marine 57 would be the one with the 101st Airborne Division tattoo on its arm and its T-shirt sleeves rolled up. The rugged exterior, however, doesn’t mean you’ll be camping out. The interior is fitted with all the amenities that make sense on a yacht such as this-sophisticated electronics, entertainment systems and the latest appliances. You won’t find suede headliners or blown-glass chandeliers aboard a 57, but that is not because Northern Marine is incapable of such flash. Clients who make the trek to the Northern Marine plant in Anacortes, Washington, want a serious voyaging yacht, not a Las Vegas penthouse.

The sort of yachtsman who appreciates a Northern Marine 57 is one who knows that there are two kinds of yachtsmen: those who have run aground, and those who are about to. For that reason, each 57 gets a steel shoe on the bottom of the full-length keel. It’s a husky 11/2 inches of reassuring protection when the 100-year-old charts in some remote destination prove to be hopeful rather than accurate.

Because this 57 may also bump into things harder than ice, the stem band that stretches from the trademark Northern Marine breastplate to the bulbous bow is a 21/2-inch prop shaft cut in half. Even the rub rails are solid 11/2-inch stainless steel.

Northern Marine has become synonymous with rugged offshore yachts, though the company’s reputation was built in just a few years. The first trawler from Northern Marine was Spirit of Zopilote, a replacement for the 70-foot Zopilote, a Delta-built yacht that achieved celebrity status among cruising yachtsmen for her globe-ranging voyages. The company made headlines again when it built the 76-foot Starship, which served as the mothership for a documentary film crew on a 76,000-mile three-year circumnavigation and is now owned by actor Gene Hackman.

Despite the molded composite hulls, previous yachts in Northern Marine’s 75- and 80-foot series have been essentially custom yachts. The 57 is designed to offer production savings while remaining semi-custom.

Raven , the Northern Marine 57 photographed for this article, is clearly intended for voyaging. Still rounded like her larger sisters, the 57’s hull is flattened aft and has slightly more rocker for stability down sea and in turns, while the sturdy keel has a more streamlined shape. According to the builder, attention to fairing results in an 11-knot top speed and a comfortable cruising speed of 9.5 knots at just six gallons per hour.

The saloon on Raven is paneled in mahogany finished with tung oil for a pleasant look that requires little maintenance. Comfortable is a word that comes to mind. There are panoramic views through the large windows. To simplify service in faraway ports, household appliances complete the galley. A flat-screen TV swings down from the overhead to conserve space in the saloon.

Staggered accommodations and the bluff bow give the 57 some ups and downs that can be off-putting at first, but she offers complete privacy for two couples and a comfortable layout for cruising.

The master suite is down from the saloon and simply furnished with a king-size berth, a settee to port and a bureau that doubles as a desk. Absent are the usual headboard and overhead treatments, and the result is a serene and comfortable getaway. A large head with a faux wood sole and a spacious shower completes the master.

The VIP stateroom is forward, accessed from the saloon by going up to and across the pilothouse, then down past the day head (which also serves the stateroom). The cabin is simple but comfortable, with two ports, an overhead hatch and an exceptionally large walk-in hanging locker.

The pilothouse is seamanlike, with a Stidd helm seat, a simple black instrument panel with space to lay out charts, and a settee with table against the after bulkhead. The windows are set a bit high for good views while standing, but this will be remedied on future 57s. The pilot berth folds out of the bulkhead, which allows two people to stay in the pilothouse on long voyages, with one sleeping while the other keeps watch. A rack that hangs charts behind the settee prevents the navigator from struggling against the curl from rolled charts.

The usual watertight door to the side deck is on the starboard side, but the port side is unusual with the door leading into a vestibule that is open to the deck and includes the stairs to the flying bridge. This not only provides weather protection, but creates an easier way to get food to the bridge from the galley.

The split-level upper decks are immense. The bridge has a simple fiberglass helm pod ahead of an L-shape settee and barbecue, all surrounded by coamings high enough that a windscreen is unnecessary. The boat deck, which extends over the lower side decks, is so large that the Zodiac RIB and Brower crane seem lost on its 21-foot length.

Voyagers will delight in the engineroom’s full headroom and-thanks to the single 330 hp John Deere 6081 diesel-wealth of space. The 17.5kW Onan generator has a power take-off, which, at the touch of a button, can provide a 6-knot cruise without the main engine, according to the builder.

Even better, the get-home system has full Mathers shifting, and it can be used for economical slow-speed operation. Because the John Deere main is a slow-turning diesel, the Onan also provides hydraulic power for the bowthruster. With 2,500 gallons of fuel, the 57 has long legs at cruising speed.

Other systems aboard Raven include a Kabola furnace that uses hot-water radiators, CruiseAir a/c, a Sea Recovery 600-gpd watermaker and a 5.5kW Fischer Panda genset for night use. A large sea chest/dump chest reduces the number of holes in the hull to three.

Northern Marine has a reputation for go-anywhere yachts with outstanding systems, and this 57 is a fine example of that philosophy.

Hull 57-06, the latest Northern Marine Expedition Yacht build is a proven passage maker and built for global travel. Her 2 stateroom layout comfortably accommodates four or five with the pilothouse settee. The spacious pilothouse with a ship-like helm will appeal to seasoned and novice skippers alike with comfortable settee seating behind for four. A gourmet galley and spacious saloon round out the accommodations. The engine room is well laid out, brightly lit and provides easy access to all equipment service points.

Full width aft deck protected by Boat Deck overhang with sink and fridge. Weather tight door leads into salon with L-shaped lounge to starboard, twin occasional chairs and table to port. Large flat screen TV in between chairs to port on a power lift facing the galley countertop of off white quartz stone. The trash compactor, dishwasher and Miele Refrigerator have walnut veneer wood panels. Up two steps into the large pilothouse, L-shaped convertible lounge located behind the helm chair. Two sliding doors and access to the "On deck head" master cabin is under the pilothouse with centerline king bed. The ensuite head, guest stateroom has a separate stairway off the pilothouse with a walk around queen berth, good storage, hanging locker space and a large flat screen TV. Door at aft of passage way leads into massive walk-in engine room.

Spacious and protected, aft deck offers a comfortable and safe space for dinning or enjoying the views while cruising. All main decks provide comfortable footing that is both durable and maintenance free. A large transom door leads down to the extended swim platform with swim ladder and staple rails.  

Entering through a large yacht finish watertight door from aft deck, the salon features a large and comfortable room with custom yacht furnishings. Extra-large windows (with silhouette shades) surround the entire room. There is a custom-made settee with storage under the seats to starboard with a custom high gloss high / low table that easily expands into a full dining surface. On the port side, two occasional chairs facing the settee are separated by a custom end table. The flat screen TV is located along the portside with a power lift. The vessels entertainment system (radio/CD player) is in the forward starboard corner.

Up a step from the salon, the Wide-Open Galley has all appliances covered in the same walnut wood that is used throughout the vessel. The broad off white quartz counter top extends into the salon.  

The ample pantry is conveniently located on the port side with pull out pantry and shelves, while the large stainless-steel sink is under the window on the starboard side. All the cupboards are faced with raised panel cabinetry. The volume of space and the open design of the Galley affords the owner and guests great visibility, without the sense of being isolated or closed in. In addition, the state-of-the-art appliances make the Galley both efficient and easy to use as well. While underway or in port, the design and the equipment help create a Galley that is an ideal location for enjoying the vessel with family and friends.

Up two steps from the galley, the pilothouse is both deep and wide. Behind the Stidd Helmsman chair is an L-shaped settee and table that also converts to a double berth. At the bottom of the foot rests to the settee, are deep drawers as well as larger drawers on each end. There are sliding wing doors on both sides for ease of docking. The comfortable sized On Deck Head is located on the port side just aft of the watertight door leading to the flybridge. The cabinetry matches that of the rest of the vessel (satin finish walnut). There are two very deep lockers under the Chart Flat on the starboard side. The console is as you would expect of any fine yacht. Instrumentation includes full gauges for engine, gen sets, hydraulics etc. Engine controls are electric MMC ZR / Mathers. The five fixed windows across the front of the wheelhouse are angled in reverse and have wipes and freshwater washdown.

Additionally, there are tank monitors and a special display of pumps (an annunciator panel to indicate the operation of bilge, fresh water, sanitation etc.) There are instruments to activate the Get Home Drive as well as hydraulic stabilizers, stern thruster, and bow thruster. There is a remote control for the anchor windlass as well as the Kahlenberg horns. A curved stairway on the port side leads to the VIP Stateroom. Master is off the salon stairway.

Owner's Suite

Separate and private, the master bedroom is under the pilothouse. The headboard of full king bed is against the main bulkhead. There are storage drawers and hanging lockers throughout, matching the walnut wood. Hull side planking is Eastern Maple. There is a large flat screen TV against the after bulkhead and adjacent to the full master head. As seen throughout the vessel, all the fixtures in the heads are upgrades with Grohe Euro Accessories. Full shower stall with safety glass, Headhunter toilet (freshwater) and Amtico heated flooring. A large and comfortable stateroom with 8' coffer ceilings and 9' over the bed.

VIP Stateroom

The VIP Stateroom is located forward, accessed by a separate stairway from the pilothouse. The stateroom has a Centerline custom tapered queen berth with walking areas around the sides and a small step port and starboard. The headboard is padded fabric and the hull sides are wood planked using eastern maple. The stateroom's hardwood and veneers are walnut. Along both hull sides are cushioned seats with storage below. Above the berth is an opening Lewmar hatch with screen for air flow and emergency egress. Overhead LED lighting with perimeter strip lighting around the berth.

The stateroom has 5 opening portlights including one in the in-suite head. The head has custom tile and a frameless glass door. The head has electric heated Amtico flooring, a Headhunter toilet and stone countertops with an under mount sink and cabinets above.

The stateroom flooring is also Amtico and has a very large hanging locker which is cedar lined. In addition to hanging locker, the bed has 4 deep drawers on the end and a large storage area under the berth with a watertight access hatch to the mechanical space under the floor. The mechanical space contains the water and forward fuel tank, forward bilge pumps, as well as the fresh water and washdown pumps. Forward in this space is the watertight access hatch to the bulbous bow and the hydraulic bow thruster.

Aft and down three steps from the Flybridge is the massive and wide-open boat deck. To the starboard side of the mast (behind a locker door) are outlets for LP air and Fresh Water connections. Center line mounted hydraulic crane. The perimeter of the boat deck is protected by the same heavy gauge SS railings. Raised edges and over-sized drains and scuppers keep the non-skid decking both dry and safe. For nighttime use, the entire space is lighted by larger commercial grade LED lighting, mounted from the mast on the hard top. With the dinghy located on the starboard side, there remains plenty of deck space on the port side. There is tender storage on port and starboard with tie down for each.

The flybridge is accessible most easily from the port side sculpted steps up from the pilothouse. Wide and protected, this walkway makes changing hem location both quick and safe.

The flybridge is completely protected by a custom FRP hardtop with built in LED lighting below and a full array of electronics and antennas above. Behind the center line there are two FB Stidd chairs captain and guest. To the port side is a U-Line ice make, large freezer / refrigerator, sink, storage and gas BBQ. The space below and forward of the Helm is enormous. There is a SS ladder that leads up to the top of the hardtop for routine maintenance. Electronics for the Helm Station are protected by custom clear covers help by Velcro fasteners. Given the height above water, the line of sight from the Flybridge helm station affords the operator full command view while underway.

Engine Room / Lazarrette

Accessed from either the large walk in watertight door from the passageway forward or from the aft deck hatch, the space afforded the owner for routine maintenance or repair is amazing. Generators are located on the portside and positioned on elevated supports for easier access. The fuel distribution system is against the forward bulkhead portside with sight gauges on each side. Along the starboard side is the fuel polishing system, chilled water A/C built in tool chest, central dump chest, black and gray pumps, monitoring system and work bench. The Sea Chest is aft of the main engine. The two overhead color cameras can monitor the essential gauges and systems. Fuel filters are conveniently located above deck on the starboard side (easily change while underway). The reservoir for the hydraulics is located on the aft bulkhead next to the cowl muffler that is part of the underway exhaust system which eliminates the soot, noise and smell. The space is well lit with AC and DC lighting and the flooring is finished in non-skid FRP insets.

All the way aft is the lazarette accessed through another dogged door. This space houses critical gear including steering gear and duel ram, air compressor, transformers, water maker + auto flush, battery (house), diesel hot water boiler system, autopilot and shoreline retriever. There is an additional hatch from the lazarette leading up to the center of the aft deck.
