Rolex Sydney Hobart Race winner decided by 51 seconds

The 2023 Rolex Sydney Hobart Race line honours battle is settled in the final gybe after one of the closest finishes in the race’s history, with Law Connect winning ahead of long-time leader Andoo Comanche.

Law Connect has won the 2023 Rolex Sydney Hobart Race line honours, after the closest finish in over 40 years, which ended in a gybe-for-gybe battle up the Derwent River against long-time leader Andoo Comanche .

Andoo Comanche held the advantage going into the Derwent with a two-mile lead, John Winning Jr’s crew crowded onto the bow in the light early morning winds to try and lift Comanche’s 8m beamy transom, which gives the yacht the nickname the ‘aircraft carrier’.  

Law Connect followed up the Derwent River with a knot or two more breeze, and were able to close the gap some two miles from the finish line, but the waters outside Hobart were littered with glassy patches, and each boat repeatedly battled to maintain hull speed through windless holes.

After 628 miles of racing, the lead changed repeatedly in the final half hour, with Law Connect taking the advantage on the final gybe for the line to roll over the top of Andoo Comanche and cross the line ahead.

It was an exceptional display of light winds tactical match racing, with Law Connect helmsman Tony Mutter and tactician Chris Nicholson directing Christian Beck’s team to victory, after being 2nd on three previous years . Law Connect crossed the Castray Esplanade finish line in Hobart at 08.03.58am local time after 1 day 19 hours 03 minutes 58 seconds of racing.

Beck gave a self-deprecating speech after, praising the crew for their efforts on a boat he admitted was not as fast or well-funded as their rivals. “I honestly can’t believe it. I rated it about a 25% chance we’d win, so to win was just amazing.

“An hour ago we were about 3 miles behind Comanche, so to win – I still can’t believe it.”

Mixed 2023 Sydney Hobart Race

The 2023 edition of the Rolex Sydney Hobart has so far seen truly mixed conditions. The Boxing Day start delivered its customary spectacle, as the three 100ft maxis led the fleet out of a packed Sydney Habour. Law Connect gave an impromptu demonstration of how to gybe a giant overlapping headsail after breaking a furling line that left them unable to tack around a turning mark, while Scallywag took penalty turns once in clear water after a port-starboard incident with Comanche shortly after the start.

Over the first two days of racing the fleet had to contend with electrical storms, squalls and severe sea states, as well as periods of light winds, and there have been 11 retirements so far. They included another line honours hopeful, the 100ft Scallywag , which had to retire after snapping the bowsprit in the first day of racing.

Other boats retired due to rigging damage, mainsail damage, and severe seasickness caused by the unpleasant sea state.  

Most dramatically the double-handed entry Rum Rebellion retired after being knocked down and having a Man Overboard, who was safely recovered.  

Co-skipper Shane Connelly reported that they were approximately 20 miles offshore on the first evening of the race, sailing under full main and spinnaker in 6-10 knots of wind, when the wind suddenly increased to over 16 knots with a ‘ferocious’ looking storm cloud approaching from behind.  

The duo prepared to drop the spinnaker, but a micro-burst of wind hit the yacht, causing a knockdown. Connelly, who had gone forwards during the spinnaker drop, was thrown overboard but tethered, and as the boat righted was lifted back onboard. He reported after: “The safety drills and systems all worked and we could sort ourselves out”

The stormy conditions caused issues across the fleet on the first night. Aboard the Santa Cruz 72 Antipodes crew member Geoff Cropley reported this morning: “We had lightning and thunder for hours. Then there was a major wind shift which auto gybed the boat.

“The spinnaker got wrapped in the drop, along with spinnaker staysail. All the team was up and trying to untwist and get that down. It took us about 40 minutes. We were heading north-east and sailing backwards for a period of time.

“We’re now hunkered down with a reef in the main. There’s little bit of blue sky. It’s quite nice out here.”

Meanwhile the battle for IRC overall continues. IRC 1 contender Alive , a Reichel Pugh 66 with a talent-packed crew including Gavin Brady, Stu Bannatyne and legendary Australian navigator Adrienne Cahalan, a veteran of 30 Hobart races. Close behind them on the IRC rankings is Hobart grandee, Sean Langman on the Reichel Pugh 69 Moneypenny led IRC 0, while the  S&S 34 Azzurro raced by Jessica Watson  is fastest of the small boats on the current IRC rankings.

Alive Sails to Another Sydney Hobart Race Win

Alive , owned by Phillip Turner and skippered by Duncan Hine, is the 2023 overall winner of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race . The Reichel/Pugh 66 arrived in Hobart to become only the second Tasmanian boat to have their name inscribed on the legendary Tattersall Cup not once, but twice.

“We’ve proved it wasn’t a fluke by winning it twice, so going into the history books I suppose is quite an honor,” commented Hine on his second overall win on this boat in five years, in typical understated fashion.

Preparation, experience and local knowledge proved to be invaluable for the winning crew, as conditions along the 628-nautical mile course pushed the smaller boats in particular to their limit.

Alive chose the same strategy as the maxis at the front of the fleet and headed east out of the Sydney heads, aiming to get around the worst of the storm fronts and harness the best of the easterly wind, a decision not without its concerns for skipper Hine.

“It was tricky, when you’re more than 100 miles east of the rhumb line and still going away from land and you’re going through the transition and thinking ‘is it ever going to come back to the way it was forecast’ – well, on one of the models.”

Like many of the 103 boats facing this arduous adventure, Alive had its share of breakages to contend with. “We were one sail down and it was the best sail for this race, we blew it out on the first day, but we hung on to URM . If we’d had that jib top we might have actually been in front of her.”

After 48 hours of battling the elements and shadowing their closest rivals on URM Group , as has often been the case in the near 80-year history of the event, the final 10 miles up Hobart’s Derwent River would decide the ultimate winner of this offshore epic.

“We didn’t realize URM was in the river, we actually thought she’d finished, and we saw her and thought, there it is. I knew what was going on and that the westerly weather pattern would replace the southerly that they had coming down the river. So, the hole that they fell into is well-known to any Hobartian sailor.”

Illustrating the importance of impeccable preparation and a wealth of experience, Alive ’s navigator Adrienne Cahalan, a former Australian yachtswoman of the year and now on her 31st Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, had a plan from the start, and it was a good one.

“We stuck to our strategy. You try to make as many decisions as you can before you leave the dock. But in this race particularly, there were a lot of challenging scenarios, things were changing out there. But I was lucky to work with Stu Bannatyne and Gavin Brady, who’d done many around the world races. And we’d talked about it beforehand and we went and executed it, and it paid off.”

Alive, skippered by Duncan Hine, has been declared the overall winner of the 78th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, securing the Tasmanian boat its second victory in five years.

The win is also Tasmania’s fifth in the 628 nautical mile Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s race after Hine skippered Phillip Turner’s Reichel/Pugh 66 to her first victory in 2018. Alive’s win adds extra polish to the pedigree of the boat that its owner, Philip Turner, bought the former Black Jack in 2014, with a view to winning the race. After its victory in 2018, Alive came close again in 2019, but placed fourth. Last year she finished 10th.

Asked how he felt to win a second Sydney Hobart, Hine laughed and said: “It goes to prove finally that it [2018] wasn’t a fluke.” Then he added: “I’m very lucky really. Phil has such an amazing boat to start with. We’ve got a really good crew. And the weather was good for us.”

Alive’s win is the highlight of an extraordinary year for the boat. This year,Alive also claimed overall honours at Hamilton Island Race Week, the Brisbane to Hamilton Island Race and Bruny Island Race, as well as line honours in the King of the Derwent Regatta.

The result also signs off on a terrific performance for Reichel/Pugh in the race, as the top three overall came from their design board, with the RP72 URM Group finishing third over the line for second overall and RP69, Moneypenny, taking third place overall. “Reichel/Pugh designs are proving to be a pretty lucky for many of these races,” Hine said.

Asked what was the key point of the race that shored up Alive’s victory, Hine cited the last stretch up the Derwent River to the finish and their nail-biting tussle with URM Group. The skipper said, “It was a cliff hanger right up to the bloody finish wasn’t it? The Derwent River always pulls something out of the bag.

Hine and his crew had to play a waiting game until this morning when the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia declared Alive the winner of the prestigious Tattersall Cup. Hine said he felt more at ease during the waiting game ”for that confirmation than in 2018. I felt a lot more confident about it than in 2018,” he said. “I thought it was going to be hard to lose from where we were. If someone had knocked us off, they would have deserved it.”

Hine lauded his 14 crew that included navigator Adrienne Cahalan for whom it was a 31st Sydney Hobart (a record for women), and New Zealanders Gavin Brady and Stu Bannatyne and the rest of the crew. We worked so hard all the way through that race. Everyone put in 100 per cent,” Hine said.“You don’t always walk away feeling like you’ve done the best you could have personally, but I don’t think anyone would have hopped off the boat feeling they could haveput more in.”

The 44 th Rolex Middle Sea Race starts tomorrow, Saturday 21 October, at 1100 CEST from Grand Harbour, Valletta. The Mediterranean’s most renowned offshore race has all the ingredients required for an enthralling contest.  An exceptional fleet is facing a shifting weather picture. Conditions look set to run the complete gamut of full on to full off over the days to come. The circular course means yachts should experience varied wind direction and strength through the 606 nautical miles. The diversity of yachts, ranging in length from 9.12 metres (30 feet) to 32.55m (107ft), will likely receive a share of the good, bad and indifferent. As always, the eventual winner of the Rolex Middle Sea Race Trophy determined under IRC Time Correction will be the crew that best pieces together the puzzle.

The brief, but essential, statistics are as follows. Some 1,000 crew from 47 nations are spread across an entry list of 110 yachts representing 25 countries. The largest yacht is Paprec Sailing Team (Spirit of Malouen X) skippered by Stephane Névé, among the 20-strong crew is Laurent Pagès, tactician on last year’s overall winner Teasing Machine. “ This is the first 600 mile offshore race with this boat ,” advises Pagès. “ We have a lot of things to learn with the boat and the Rolex Middle Sea Race is always challenging, so it is going to be very interesting. You can expect everything from very light to ‘hell’ which is why we love it. ”

At one third of the supermaxi’s length, the Dehler 30 OD Aether is being sailed double-handed by Evi Delidou and Jerry Petratos from Greece. In a twist worthy of a Hollywood romcom, the pair met during a boat delivery to the 2014 Rolex Middle Sea Race. They have been an item in sailing and life ever since. “ We met in the middle of the Mediterranean on the way from Greece to Malta ,” explained Delidou. “ We both have a love for long offshores, and it is time for us to do this magnificent race together .”

Alexia Barrier’s MOD70 trimaran Limosa (first boat to finish in 2022 as Mana) should show the fleet a clean set of transoms. There are two other fast multihulls – Finn, Jacopo Bracco’s Banuls 53 (USA) and Aldo Fumagalli’s Rapido 40, Adamas – vying for honours under MOCRA.

In the monohull fleet, an impressive line-up of maxi yachts has gathered. Bryon Ehrhart’s American entry Lucky (27m / 88ft) is the former five-time line honours winner Rambler 88 and with much of the old crew onboard has the armoury and skillset to lead the charge. Ehrhart won the race overall on his debut in 2010. Leopard 3, last year’s fastest monohull, has undergone some serious surgery in recent months. At 30.78m (100ft) and five tonnes lighter than a year ago, she remains a potent threat. Making a first appearance, US entry Pyewacket 70, winner of the RORC Caribbean 600 in February, brings some serious racing pedigree and a star-studded crew. Pyewacket 70’s navigator Peter Isler thinks they could be a dark horse in the line honours contest. “ The weather is stacking up to be quite challenging and that might be good for us ,” says Isler, “ The relative speeds of the boats around us are pretty well known for the typical racecourse. This year, if we sail a lot upwind, we could see some performance windows and opportunities .”   Andrea Recordati’s Bullitt was second across the line last year, and is another weapon to have been upgraded and not to be discounted.

Looking at the monohull entry list as a whole, the fleet is stacked with talent from top to bottom. The Rolex Middle Sea Race has always been a melting pot and even the most innocuous looking boat can feature an offshore wizard with the ability to push a crew to greater than expected achievement. Clear favourites, on paper at least, the 52 footers, such as Max Klink’s Caro from Switzerland, winner of the 2023 Rolex Fastnet Race, and Chris Sheehan’s Warrior Won from the United States (third at the Fastnet and fourth at the 2022 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, also just behind Caro). According to Sheehan there may be too much upwind work in the forecast for the American PAC52 to challenge as strongly as he would like. Navigator Will Oxley is on his fourth race, with a best performance in 2021 with triple-winner Comanche, agrees but acknowledges opportunities lie ahead. “ This race looks like being different to the previous three ,” he advises. “ It looks a windier race than average and probably a lot more upwind than average . This is a race where it is easy to come unstuck blindly following the routing. Being on deck and watching what is going on is a key component. It is never straight-forward. ” Red Bandit from Germany and the Swiss Chocolate 3 (former Optimum 3, winner of the race in 2004) may be others to watch.

Slightly smaller, but no less blessed with talent and opportunity, the NMD 43 Albator of Philippe Frantz (third overall in 2018) and the Carkeek 45 Ino Noir of RORC Commodore James Neville were both fast finishers at this summer’s Fastnet. A pair of Cookson 50s – Franco Niggeler’s Kuka 3 (Switzerland) and Robert Pethick’s Testacoure Race from United States will be looking to replicate the exploits of Mascalzone Latino, the winner in 2016.

Six of the past ten races have been won by yachts between 12m (40ft) and 15m (50ft), and there are some likely looking candidates this year. A close contest should develop between the two Carkeek 47s, which match in passion for offshore racing, but differ in experience. Optimum 5 – Samos Steamship, led by Periklis Livas and Nikos Lazos, are celebrating 30 years of the Optimum Yacht Racing Team. Winners in 2004, this will be their eight race, albeit the first with their latest, lighter and wetter ride. Stortebekker is one of eight female skippered teams, and features a young German crew from the Hamburger Verein Seefahrt.

Malta has been one of the two most successful nations in the past 10 years, along with Italy, winning overall on three occasions since 2013. The Podesta siblings – Aaron, Christoph, and Maya – are racing the First 45 Elusive 2, which won the ultimate prize in 2019 and 2020. Meanwhile, Lee Satariano has also lifted the trophy twice, most recently in 2014 in a previous boat. His latest craft, the all-carbon HH42 Artie III comes with the added bonus of multiple race winner Christian Ripard on his 33rd trip around the course. Jonathan Gambin, Dufour 44 Ton Ton Laferla, has competed in every race since 2008 and was third overall in 2020.

The beauty of the Rolex Middle Sea Race is that it offers more than just competition. All entrants want to do well, to test themselves against their peers. Many are simply satisfied with the opportunity to put daily life to one side, and spend time on the water with friends and fellow sailors enjoying one of the most magical courses in the calendar. Two active volcanoes, a myriad of islands, azure waters and the chance of some sunshine and warmth is an attractive package not to be missed.

ANWA The future of women’s golf

The Augusta National Women’s Amateur (ANWA) is the leading tournament for non-professional women golfers. Seventy-two participants travel from all over the world to be a part of this event that takes place in late March-early April. The first two rounds are played on the Champions Retreat courses in the US state of Georgia, with the 30 leading players and ties making the cut to the final round staged on the legendary course at Augusta National Golf Club.

The event is both a launching pad and a great source of media exposure for future champions of the professional tour. In 2023, the ANWA was won by Rose Zhang. The young American, who claimed the Rolex Junior Player of the Year title in 2019 and 2020, has since become a Rolex Testimonee. She won the Mizuho Americas Open just days after turning professional.

DP World Tour and Rolex Series Around the world in 40-plus tournaments

The main European golf tour (formerly the European Tour) changed its name to the DP World Tour in 2022. The tournaments on its calendar take place across Europe, the Middle East, Australia, Asia and the Caribbean.

The Official Timekeeper of the peak European tour since 1997, our brand was also instrumental in the creation of the Rolex Series in 2017, which brings together the five most prestigious tournaments on the tour. They are the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, the Genesis Scottish Open, the BMW PGA Championship, the Abu Dhabi Championship and the DP World Tour Championship.

The DP World Tour Championship, which has been held in Dubai in November since 2009, is the focal event for players on the tour: only the top 50 in the season-long Race to Dubai Rankings qualify to play in it.

Ladies European Tour Striving for glory in Europe and beyond

The Ladies European Tour (LET) consists of some 30 tournaments staged in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and the United States. At the end of the season, the highest-ranked player is awarded the European Order of Merit. Like the LPGA Tour, the LET is one of several tours whose results are included in the Rolex Women’s World Ranking.

Rolex Testimonees Annika Sörenstam and Suzann Pettersen both excelled on the tour, winning the European Order of Merit – in 1995 and 2013 respectively – before joining the LPGA Tour. In 2021, the young Thai champion Atthaya Thitikul, with two tournament triumphs, won the European Order of Merit as well as the Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year titles.

Asian Tour Supporting the rise of golf in Asia

The Asian Tour is the main men’s professional tour on the Asian continent. In 2023, it featured 17 tournaments, mainly in Asia, but also in Oceania and Europe (England, Scotland).

The Asian Tour is constantly progressing and has produced some great champions, among which are Rolex Testimonees Hideki Matsuyama (Japan), Sung-Jae Im (South Korea) and Jeev Milkha Singh (India).

'Advantedge' of a Tasmanian family affair.

For the crew of the Advantedge , this year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is poised to become a memorable family affair with six of the crew related to another member. 

The Tasmanian entry’s crew includes three father-and-son pairings: owner and skipper Andrew and Josh Jones (23-years-old), Ross and Bailey Edmunds and Michael and Nick Smart. Their union has not been by chance though. They have all been sailing together for years, even since the three sons – Josh, Bailey and Nick – were racing in Sabots and Lasers.

In those formative years of the boys’ sailing careers, Andrew Jones and his wife Michelle forgot that in their possession, but stored away under cover, was a “50-footer.” Then it dawned on them: why not take the yacht out, then give it a new lease of life and in turn the boys the chance to develop their sailing to the challenge of offshore racing.

“So, we did. One New Year’s Eve, we got her out of the cocoon we had her in and refurbished it and sailed it with the other kids, who were all the same age, and their fathers,” Jones said. “Here we are today. It’s not something that has just come together over a year, but years.” 

Advantedge’s re-build was complete in 2020 and this year he entered the boat’s third Sydney Hobart. The Inglis 47 is also one of seven Tasmanian entries from the 103 still in the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s 628 nautical mile race.  

Usually moored in Hobart, Advantedge is registered with the Port Dalrymple Yacht Club in the north of Tasmania. “We are pretty much a 50-50 set-up, 50 in the south, 50 on the north,” said Jones.

Advantedge is not alone when it comes to showcasing strong family ties within the crew. Defending Line Honours champion boat Andoo Comanche , from NSW, has a crew rich in family connections, starting with skipper John ‘Herman’ Winning Jr. 

His sister Jamie will be racing on the maxi yacht in her first Sydney Hobart. Also on board will be their father John. Brothers Nathan and Peter Dean are also in the crew; it is 25 years since they lost their father, John, who was aboard Winston Churchill in the 1998 Sydney Hobart. 

On another maxi, Wild Thing 100 (Qld), owner/skipper Grant Wharington has his son Oli and daughter Georgia (her maiden Hobart) as crew; and the father-daughter pairing of Adrian and Lisa Seiffert. Anthony Johnston, owner of URM Group , has three of his brothers as crew, David, Nick, Andrew. 

On Helsal 3 , skipper Rob Fisher will be joined his wife Kerrie, their daughter Elizabeth and son Brandon, the last three for their debuts. And there are two sets of identical twins, with Louis and Marc Ryckmans racing their Volstar Yeah Baby , while Louis and Antony Gango are aboard Michael Martin’s Frantic from Newcastle. 

On Mako from Newcastle, there are two father-son pairs with Greg and Marcus Busch and Tim and Hugh Dodds, whereas Tim’s oldest son Brad will be on Smuggler.  

There are many other families sailing together on the same and different vessels, such as Brad Kellett on Antipodes , while his father David is the Chief Radio Operator on the Radio Relay Vessel, JBW. And Rupert Henry, owner of Mistral , last year’s Two-Handed overall winner, will sail against his father, David on Philosopher.

Happy Go takes Line Honours in 2024 Rolex China Sea Race

HONG KONG , March 30, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- The fierce battle for Line Honours in the Rolex China Sea Race between defending Line Honours winner  Standard Insurance Centennial V and Happy Go was finally settled in the early hours of the morning today when Happy Go edged out her rival by five minutes. It was as nail-biting a finish as one could ever have with close, competitive racing. It was at around 0315hrs that Happy Go edged in front and finally at 05hr20m53s, Nie Hua's Happy Go crossed the finish line to claim Line Honours, shaving more than 20 hours off their elapsed time from 2023.

Skipper Jono Rankine said "The battle with Centennial V was close the whole race.  We were aware of them the whole way along the racecourse. We were always checking to see who was close to the finish line and then obviously right at the end we could see them right the way through, firstly on AIS and seeing their lights at night. It was pretty exciting and there were a few lead changes. One moment they were ahead, another moment we were ahead and then the next moment we were sitting in a wind hole and not moving and they were ghosting past us. Yeah, it was exciting and a fun way to win the race." 

Jono explained that one of biggest tactical decisions was made ahead of the race when they dropped four people from the crew, "it made the boat a lot lighter and easier to sail and it definitely made the race more challenging. We were expecting the race to be a lot longer but we knew it was going to be light winds and not super demanding so we knew we could handle it with nine people. " 

Ernesto Echauz's Standard Insurance Centennial V finished only five minutes behind Happy Go . Ernesto said "This was the most exciting Rolex China Sea Race that I have ever experienced. It was so exciting from the start on the first day and all the way up to the finish. Happy Go did very well. What was so nice was that we were competing with each other, especially on the last day up to the end. I am very proud of my team and proud of the other competitors as they are very competitive." Shortly after, and showing his sportsmanship, Ernesto went to visit Happy Go to congratulate them on their win.

With the Line Honours settled and as the rest of the fleet converges on Subic Bay, all eyes are on who will take IRC Overall. A thrilling battle is developing for the IRC Overall leaderboard with boats swapping positions often. Seawolf, Zesst, A Plastic Ocean and Whiskey Jack have all to play for. Happy Go is currently sitting at the top in IRC overall but will have to wait it out to see whether the other boats still racing can beat her time in the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club's 565 nautical mile race.  The last time a boat won Line Honours and IRC Overall was Neil Pryde on HiFi in 2010.

As of HK Time 1600hrs, A Plastic Ocean is leading in IRC Racer 2, Zesst leads IRC Racer 3 and Rampage008 is looking strong for the Cruiser division. Monnblue2 and Parnassus are having another nail-biting race with Moonblue2 in front. Blowers Daughter is leading in PHS.

Happy Go takes the Double – Winning Line Honours and IRC Overall in the 2024 Rolex China Sea Race

HONG KONG , March 31, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — For the first time in 14 years, the Line Honours winner of the Rolex China Sea Race has ‘done the double’ and picked up the IRC Overall as well! 

After a well fought ‘chase and overtake’ competition from the start till the finish, Happy Go finished the Race on 30 March at 05hr20m53s, a mere five minutes ahead of their rival all along the way down to Subic Bay, Standard Insurance Centennial V .

On her corrected time, of 2days 18hours 0mins 53 seconds, none of other IRC boats competing can beat her time in this 565 nautical mile race.

Nie Hua and crew lifted both the China Sea Trophy and Sunday Telegraph Trophy at the prizegiving ceremony held at the Subic Bay Yacht Club.  Nie Hua was also presented with two Rolex timepieces.  The last time a boat achieved the double win was in 2010 when Neil Pryde competed with his boat HiFi .

Nie Hua was ecstatic about taking both big prizes in their only their second entry into the Rolex China Sea Race, saying “We have made a lot of preparations ahead of the Race but getting Line Honours and the IRC Overall title is completely out of my expectations!  I would like to give a huge applause to the crew working on board.  I am absolutely thrilled and so thankful. We had a great team, although we had some language barriers, we operated well, so a big thank you to the team!”

Skipper Jono Rankine added his praises for the crew “Very proud of how the team came together, it’s a relatively new team and everyone did a fantastic job and there were no egos on the boat and everyone was helping each other and doing a really good job.  It was really satisfying to see.”

Chinese Entry William Liu’s Seawolf claimed 2nd IRC Overall. Happy Go , Seawolf and Standard Insurance Centennial V also came 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively in IRC Racer 0.

The bulk of the fleet is still racing so there are more division winners to be calculated over the course of the coming days.

2024 marks the 62nd anniversary of this world-renowned blue water classic.  This flagship event is organised by the cosmopolitan Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, one of the oldest and most prestigious clubs in Hong Kong.  Rolex has been a partner of the Club since 2007 and Title Sponsor of its flagship Race since 2008.Telegraph Trophy. This year in the City of Moscow, three City Council seats and school board seats for Zones 1, 3, and 4, are up for election. For the city council race, the winners will be whichever candidates receive the top three sets of votes , while the school board trustees will be decided based on who gets the most votes in their respective districts.

Voter Registration Info

Early voting starts Oct 25th, and runs through November 3rd. During this period, citizens can go to the Latah County Courthouse between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. and vote. Otherwise, election day is on November 7th, at which time citizens will need to go to their respective precincts to vote ( Precinct Map ), based on their residential address.

If your permanent residence is here in Moscow, Latah County, Idaho:

To register to vote online (voteidaho.gov) or at the Latah County clerk’s office or at the polls, you must be a citizen of the United States, 18 years of age, a resident of Idaho and your county for 30 days prior to the election. To prove this, you must provide:

• Idaho-issued identification card or Idaho driver’s license or current US passport
• One approved proof of residence document

Any of the above photo identification with correct residence address:

• Lease or rental agreement
• Utility bill (excluding cellular telephone bill)
• Bank or credit card statement
• Paystub, paycheck, government-issued check
• For students: Enrollment papers from current school year.

Is your address current on it?

If not please update your address online at dmvonline.itd.idaho.gov/   Or in person at Latah County DMV, 1313 S. Blaine Street, Moscow, ID 83843. (No need to pay the $20 new-card fee. The address will be corrected in the state’s system.) 

No, I do not have an Idaho state-issued photo identification card (or driver’s license) . 

Follow the Idaho DMV rules for a driver’s license. Or apply for an Idaho photo identification card:

Bring 1 or 2 (2 will allow you to get a Star Card for travel purposes) of these original documents proving residency that are less than a year old in your current name with current address to the DMV:

• Lease, rental agreement, mortgage, or deed
• Account statement from one or two different utilities (no ¾ page or cell phone bills)
• Account statement from a bank or financial institution
• Medical or insurance provider statement, invoice, or explanation of benefits
• Pay stub or employment verification (it must list your legal name.)
• Idaho school enrollment records with current address (college IDs are not accepted)
• Residency affidavit signed by an adult over age 18
• Vehicle, homeowner’s, or renter’s liability information.
• And bring your birth certificate and social security card .

Have you been recently married and need to update your name on your Idaho state-issued photo identification card (or driver’s license)?

First, change your name on your social security card by taking to Lewiston Social Security Office:

• Maiden name social security card
• Marriage certificate (not the gold-seal version, but the certified copy)
• Must have State File Number, Groom, Bride, and Family ( maiden ) Name completed
• Birth certificate (recorded copy, not the keepsake copy)
• Maiden name state-issued photo identification card (or driver’s license).

Then, change your name on your Idaho state-issued photo identification card (or driver’s license) at the Latah County DMV, 1313 S. Blaine Street, Moscow, ID 83843.

I was recently married, but I do not have ANY valid photo identification card

• Follow the Idaho DMV rules for a driver’s license. 

Or apply for an Idaho state-issued photo identification card (see steps above). Wait for the plastic one to arrive in the mail. 

2. Change your name on your social security card by taking to Lewiston:

• New Idaho state-issued photo identification card (or driver’s license).

3.  Wait 24-48 hours. Then return to DMV in person for your state-issued photo identification card (or driver’s license).

There is a new, free Idaho voting identification card option for people who do not drive. This program began in July 2023, so there is not much information available on it. 

The signed affidavit is only to be used if the properly registered voter comes to the polls without a picture identification, and his verbally given address matches the roster. If the addresses do not match, the person must re-register to vote (must go and get the photo identification and proof of address).

As a student , where should I register to vote?

From the Idaho Secretary of State’s website :

“College students must establish, as with all other voter registration applicants, that the locale within which they seek to register and vote is their domicile i.e. that they are living in the college community with the intention of abandoning their former domicile and with the intention of remaining permanently, or for an indefinite length of time, in the new location. Some of the factors which may be relevant in determining whether domicile has been established for voting purposes by a student as well as any other applicant, are as follows:

• Has the applicant registered to vote elsewhere?
• Where does the applicant maintain his checking and saving accounts, if any?
• Where does the applicant pay taxes, and what address did he list as his residence on his last income tax return?
• What is the residence listed on the applicant’s driver’s license?
• If the applicant owns an automobile, where is it registered?
• Does the applicant live year round at his claimed domicile, or does he divide it elsewhere? If it is divided, how much time is spent elsewhere and for what reason?

As a student, you should not be registering and voting in your college locale simply because you failed to register and vote at your true domicile. Registering to vote is a serious matter which should only be done after proper reflection. It should be noted that there is no federal right to vote anywhere in the United States for the office of President. State laws control registration and voting and State residency requirements must be met.”

“We need and want all students to vote at their legal domicile.”

If your permanent residence is in another state, contact your home state’s election division to register and vote (absentee?) there.

Six Candidates Running For Three Seats On Moscow City Council

Moscow voters will have several contested elections to decide this fall.

The candidate filing period for seats up for a vote this year in Idaho ended on Friday.

Six candidates are running for three Moscow City Council seats.  Incumbents Sandra Kelly and Drew Davis are running for re-election.  Bryce Blankenship, Joe Campbell, Evan Holmes and Nathan Tupper are also running for city council.  The top three vote getters in November will earn Moscow City Council seats.  Councilwoman Maureen Laflin is not running for re-election.

Elsewhere in Latah County the race for Juliaetta Mayor has three candidates.  Mayor Richard Groseclose is being challenged by Jeff Lohman and Eric McDowell.

No one filed for mayor and a council post in Onaway.
