I've been one of the crew and a rigger for the owner since he purchased her in 2008. He is only her second owner and we have enjoyed many delightful daysails together on the Bay ... first out of Grand Marina in Alameda and now based in Point Richmond. She is quick with just her working sails and a heck of a lot of fun, often with just two or three of us on board. Entertaining guests has often been a big priority and with her twin steering stations, outstanding cockpit table, swivel mounted GPS chartplotter and custom cockpit grabrails, it is not only more comfortable for typical non-sailing oriented folks ... but also safer for moving about and navigating using her Raymarine radar/GPS split screen color display. If you are familiar with the standard Sun Odyssey Deck Salon, she is well-equipped to handle typical windy San Francisco Bay weather. Here a some of the features/benefits of some of the gear that has been added including those I have installed myself; Electric cabin top winch - We replaced the existing port side standard Harken with a 2 speed Harken electric winch. This allows for much easier mainsail deployment, reefing and control by one person. It does take some practice and knowledge of how the in-mast furling system is designed to work. It has been trouble free for us so long as we keep a light tension on the proper furling lines and outhaul whenever using them. (The opposing forces of the outhaul against the two furling lines and their endless loop splices are what keep the mainsail tightly rolled up inside the mast at all times) The electric winch is most helpful in this regard. What used to be a very tiring procedure can now be accomplished in a tenth of the time and with very little physical effort required. Note that we also added an additional matched house battery to augment the total capacity of the battery banks so that use of the electric winch on a regular basis on a typical daysail will never be a concern. Once we discovered some years ago that an electric cabin top winch is apparently available as a factory installed option, researching this further, I was able to order a factory designed and constructed custom fiberglass underdeck cover to hide the electric motor to match. BTW, this electric two speed winching capability also extends to control of a few of the other starboard side lines on an as needed basis by passing them once around the starboard side cabin top winch ... and thence across the companionway to the electric winch on the port side. Thus, there are several dedicated port side sheet stoppers ... which are now enabled with "push button" two speed ease of use as follows; Mainsail outhaul Mainsail in-mast furl IN Mainsail in-mast furl OUT Mainsheet Boom Vang Port side traveler control line Foresail furling control line Note that lines from the starboard cabin top sheet stoppers include; Foreguy Pole Topping Lift Pole car uphaul Pole car downhaul Starboard side traveler control line The weight of the inboard end of the whisker pole is largely supported by a shock cord running from the pole car up to a small cheek block at the top of the spinnaker pole track and then back down to the base of the mast. The purpose of this is to make the foredeck job easier when attaching the pole to the clew of the jib or when jibing the pole. We chose a large diameter telescoping pole to allow for the future use of a gennaker. Though we have yet to purchase the gennaker itself, we originally felt it would add a lot of downwind speed when sailing "wing-and-wing" down the Oakland Estuary after a long daysail. However, we now know that the whisker pole does indeed add a lot of speed simply when used with either jib poled out. Abby Gale is also outfitted with a beautifully comfortable teak cockpit and easily accessible transom swim steps with swim ladder and shower. The swivel mounted GPS/chart plotter is a joy to use from either the port or starboard helm seat. We sited the original Raymarine GPS mounting location instead with a small storage locker for binoculars, cameras, etc. We also mounted two separate night lights for the cockpit table (one white and one red) which shine forward (away from the helm stations) from the GPS mounting pod. Abby Gale has been well maintained and it shows. I would not hesitate to sail her anywhere. She will provide her new owners with many miles of pure sailing enjoyment for years to come. As a yacht skipper and rigger for nearly 40 years on San Francisco Bay, I currently find myself living in San Antonio Texas. I'm expanding my horizons to include sailing my new Hobie Tandem Island Mirage kayak all over the place! Loving sailing a Jeanneau 39 based in Point Richmond but I've also owned or been partners in a MacGregor 65 ocean racer, a couple of trailerable daysailers and a couple of windsurfers. Not mentioned here nor often shown in ads for this Jeanneau 39DS Sun Odyssey model is the fact that it has a large "garage" for extra storage (only accessible through the head compartment). There is also a large oval window in the hull on the outboard side of the "garage" which provides a significant amount of light for ease of use. Located low in the hull on the port side under the cockpit, I suspect this full storage area is even long enough to add about a 6 foot long spare berth cushion for a young person or extra crew member if needed. It's awkward at best but it can certainly hold many extra sails or even a full complement of tools for a makeshift workshop. Abby Gale is available for viewing by appointment. The Adventure Island is the perfect fit for those looking for a highly versatile and capable vessel that can be used in various waterways and conditions – especially in situations where speed and the ability to cover longer distances is paramount.

Whether you’re just looking for something to get out on the water for thrills, ambitious expeditions, fishing endeavors or all of the above it’s hard to go wrong with the Hobie Adventure Island (AI). The AI is an incredibly versatile boat that is fun and easy to use in a variety of waters and conditions – the consummate solo crew sailing kayak perfect for everything from relaxing or thrilling day trips on lakes, bays or open ocean to overnight camping trips, multi-day expeditions and a myriad of fishing pursuits.

Because the AI is also equipped with a MirageDrive pedal-powered propulsion system it can also be pedaled around with surprising efficiency, which is a nice back up in case the wind drops off. The AI is also supplied with a paddle, although you won’t be needing it often. In it’s full glory the AI is a trimaran sailing vessel that is surprisingly capable given it’s size.

With a sail area size of around 5.4 square metres and a mast of around 4.6 metres in length, the AI is capable of generating rather respectable speeds. Thanks to the amas (otherwise known as pontoons) the AI is also incredibly stable, which is a confidence inspiring feature for novices and advanced users alike. Featuring a simple-to-operate roller-furler operation of the sail is simple enough to use without the threat of a head-concussing boom swinging precariously in strong winds.

As a sailboat it is easy enough to manage and can be transported via car-top or trailer and is quick and easy to rig. As a kayak it’s fast and efficient and as an outrigger it’s simply one of the best fishing platforms on offer. If you can see yourself using the AI in all of these configurations, we’re confident in recommending it to you.

The AI can be stripped of its sail, amas and akas to convert it to a kayak and this is one of the reasons the AI is so versatile. If there’s not enough wind to go sailing you can always use it as a kayak. It pedals well, paddles well, is fast and efficient through the water and equally at home on rivers as it is open ocean.

But wait… there’s more. The AI can also be rigged as a Polynesian style outrigger. By rigging one of the amas the boat becomes an outrigger style craft that is supremely stable making it a fantastic option for fishing in scenarios where stability is valued. By adding a tramp (fitted between the akas) some 12 square foot of usable deck space is added, offering even further utility that comes in handy for all sorts of things. Ideal for touring and overnight camping trips, it’s also an excellent for kayak fishing.

The Adventure Island is a one person Trimaran kayak that is designed for sailing but can equally be pedalled or even paddled!

Unfurl the 6.04 m² / 65 ft² surface area sail from the 5.03 m / 16' 6" tall carbon composite mast and ride the wind with ease! The Adventure Island features fold-out AMAs for lateral stability and a drop-down daggerboard to prevent lateral slipping, making the "AI" a very capable sailing craft that is easy to use! You can pick up some serious speed and have some great fun with this kayak. Turning the AI is made easy via the stern rudder, which is controlled by a handle positioned adjacent to the seating position. The main sail can also be controlled, unfurled and reefed all from the seat too. The AI makes a great sailing craft for coastal waters and large inland waters. For enhanced performance 'Off-the-Wind', add a Adventure Island Spinnaker and the AI will come alive!

When the wind drops the fun can still continue. Simply reef in the sail and use the Mirage Drive to pedal the craft, so that you can continue your adventure or head back to shore! If you fancy a day paddling then leave the AMAs at home and take the main hull out on the water - at 16ft 7in length it paddles quite well!

Comfort is ensured for long days on the water by the fully adjutsable Vantage CT seat, which features Boa Lumbar Support. The AI features the Mirage Drive 180 full power pedal drive in forwards... and reverse! Switching between forwards and reverse is as simple and easy as pulling a toggle on the drive system. The drive system features 'Glide Technology' with roller bearings found on the major pivoting components of the drive, for a smoother and easier pedalling experience. The Mirage Drive 180 comes equipped with the new ST Turbo Kick Up Fins. Kick Up fins offer worry-free pedalling - should you strike an object with the fins they simply kick up out of harms way to help reduce the risk of damage.

The Adventure Island is a very capable kayak for fishing in both inshore and offshore waters, and comes with two moulded-in rod holders and the Lowrance-Ready system. The Lowrance ready system makes fish finder installation easy using a large transducer scupper under the kayak and a system of deck seals for waterproof cable routing.

Storage space is plentiful and loading up for a multi-day expedition, weekend camp or days fishing is no problem. The large bow hatch will swallow plenty of gear for storage in-hull. Two 8 inch Twist-Lock hatches feature at the stern and just forwards of the seat allowing for easy access to the hull for storage. A generous rear tankwell will also take plenty of gear or a storage crate for when you need to load up with gear. Mesh-pockets feature in the cockpit to store the small items you want to keep within easy reach. For loads of extra deck space, add the Adventure Island Trampoline Kit across the AKAs!

When it comes to docking or storing your AI, the AMAs fold in against the hull at the push of a button. An AI can be transported on a strong and quality roof rack, but custom built trailers are also available to make life easier.

The Hobie kayaks are famous for their Mirage Drive pedal system. This system consists of a pair of pedals that drive two rubber fins side to side to propel the kayak forward. The revolutionary Mirage Drive 180 allows you to pedal in reverse, all at the pull of a toggle! The Mirage System is silent while pedalling and creates no splash, it also allows you to effortlessly pedal the kayak with your feet while keeping your hands free, perfect for fishing and photography.

Equipped with ARC pedal cranks that adjust with the push of a button to accommodate users from child size to tall adults. Retractable Island Rudder System

Hobie's come up with a Rudder that is easily controllable with a lever to steer as well as two pull handles on either side of the kayak: a "Down" handle to deploy the rudder and an "Up" handle to lift the rudder out of the water when in shallow water and for landing.

Sail Controls

The sail can easily be controlled from the seating position using the supplied cords and lines, cleat systems and roller-bearing furling system.

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
