Bluewater Sailboat – Hans Christian 38 TraditionalThe Bluewater Sailboat Hans Christian 38 Traditional (also referred to as the 38T) is a heavy displacement double-ender that exudes the vintage sense of a bygone era. Its origins can be traced back to Colin Archer’s work, which inspired William Aitkin with Thistle and Eric, from which arose Crealock’s famous Westsail 32, the boat that not only “launched a thousand dreams,” but a boatbuilding boom eager to meet the demand for the salty Scandinavian double-ended styling. Hans Christian Yachts, created in Long Beach, California by John Edwards, a schoolteacher regarded as a dreamer and oddball, had ideal timing. He was among the first of a wave of American entrepreneurs to capitalise on Taiwan’s low-cost yet skilled boatbuilding sector. He was also the first to contact the now-famous Bob Perry about designing a production boat, the CT54. It was followed by the Hans Christian 34 Traditional, which established the design direction for the Hans Christian line for over two decades. The company’s relationship to Perry, however, did not persist, and by 1974, Hans Christian Yachts had switched to Harwood Ives. The 38T, debuted in 1976, was Ives’ third Hans Christian yacht. - LOA: 30′ 3″

The Bluewater Sailboat 38T, like her siblings from the same era (43, 36, and 33), is visually stunning and very seaworthy, having completed numerous circumnavigations. Owners adore their liveaboard luxury and “cadillac ride,” but critics will point out their subpar “heavy displacement” boat speed. Above the waterline, the style is classic Hans Christian, with a long bowsprit, a springy sheerline, and a rounded canoe stern covered with huge dollops of teak. A hull with exceptionally rounded sections, a full keel with a forefoot cutaway, and a large “barn door” rudder are all found below the waterline. As you might expect, they are sturdy Bluewater Sailboats designed to cruise in safety and luxury. In their 1999 review, Practical Sailor Magazine mentioned one US Coastguard who made a mid-winter trip from Annapolis while the boat was ice-bound. This Bluewater Sailboat while riding up on the ice, the weight of the boat crushes through the path, which is a traditional ice-breaking technique. The only damage identified during a haulout is a small worn spot of bottom paint. PerformanceShe’s not lightweight when underway, weighing over 30,000 pounds in ordinary cruising trim, and light air performance suffers despite carrying a significant amount of sail area. Ignoring later variants of the boat, the standard 38T doesn’t point very high; owners report that 40 degrees of visible wind are about the best. She can make 6 knots to weather and 7 knots off the breeze with 10-15 knots. The first reef is normally taken in at 15-18 knots, and when the winds increase up, weather helm occurs. Of course, in heavy airs and seas, the Hans Christian 38T shines; she’s seaworthy and dry, with no bobbing or banging around in the harsh stuff. The 38T variants are as enigmatic as the sea itself. The original 38T was available as a cutter or ketch, with the cutter being far more popular. There were two interior configuration options: a pullman berth or a v-berth in the forepeak. Soon after the boat’s debut, a “MkII Interior” was made available, with the pullman bunk moved further aft and the head relocated to the forepeak. The main bulkhead was shifted aft on these boats to make way for the pullman berth. Around 1977, the 38T spawned a whole new sailboat, the Hans Christian 38 MkII, which was somewhat confusingly called. This twin, again designed by Ives, had flatter bottom sections with beam carried further forward and aft, a bigger rig with more sail, and an interior arrangement similar to the 38T “MkII Interior,” with the exception of the Sailboats Galley sink being placed on an island bench. Look for a truncated teak coaming at the extreme stern of the boat to immediately identify these (unique to only the MkII and the Hans Christian 33 Traditional). When hauling out, you’ll see the rudder is more aft. The higher “MkII rig” from this boat was offered as an option on the 38T, but the rig proved overpowered for the 38T until the Telstar Keel was introduced in the following chapter. In 1984, one of the two 38T manufacturing molds underwent surgery to improve performance. The leading edge of the keel was pushed aft, a considerable bite was taken from the trailing edge, and a revised skeg-mounted rudder was added. The redesigned vessel was known as the “Telstar” Hans Christian 38 Traditional. According to Beckwith, the Telstar Keel was a significant improvement, pointing higher and improving light wind performance in particular. “Scott Sprague provided design assistance, but the region to cut the keel was determined by John Edwards, the creator of Hans Christian.” When the first sea trial was held in Taiwan, there was some trepidation. Nobody was sure what to anticipate. But, to my surprise, the boat sailed like a dream. When compared to the older 38 Traditional, which sailed more on her head sails, the helm was as light as a feather. We also extended the mast’s lead by extending the spar 12 inches forward, greatly lowering weather helm.” Craig Beckwith’s The Telstar 38T came standard with the taller “MkII rig.” The “MkII interior” was no longer an option for the Telstar 38T since the compression post’s increased position (12 inches forward) hindered the would-be bunk entry. This was also true for the small number of 38T boats equipped with this “MkII rig.” Beckwith thinks that 167 Hans Christian 38 Traditionals, including 30 Telstars, were constructed in a production run that outnumbered Hans Christian 38 MkIIs (87 built). Both boats went out of production about 1989, when the boat industry was slammed with both barrels of a recession and a luxury tax. Shin Fa Industries had gone out of business by then, and Hans Christian Yachts was in the midst of moving its operations to Thailand. Beckwith sold the last boat made, a Telstar 38T, at the San Diego Boat Show in 1989, and the molds were burned shortly after. Quick NotesSome standard things to check, as with most older boats, are: - Chainplates for leak detection
- Inspect hoses for deterioration and clamps for rust and corrosion; early vessels did not always employ high-quality metals.
- Through-hulls and seacocks should be thoroughly inspected because some become loose with age.
- Of course, if the teak decks have not previously been replaced, they should be inspected.
Electrical issues are most likely the weakest link in most Taiwanese-built boats from the 1970s and 1980s. Some older boats employed automotive-grade wiring, which was more prone to corrosion, and wiring looms were frequently difficult to access since they were hidden beneath teak battens and ceiling liners, making repairs costly. Review of Hans Christian 38Basic specs.. The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. Sailing characteristicsThis section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats. What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)? The capsize screening value for Hans Christian 38 is 1.63, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races. What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed? The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.7 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed. The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Hans Christian 38 is about 253 kg/cm, alternatively 1419 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 253 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1419 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch. Sailing statisticsThis section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points. What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)? What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)? What is Displacement Length Ratio? SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 15.80 MaintenanceIf you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.
