Messing around in small boats is a global theme-one thats embraced by pond-bound pram sailors, river riders, lake voyagers, and all of us who call salt water home. The purpose of this sailing dinghy profile is to highlight seven very interesting little sailboats. Some are new designs, and others have stood the test of time, but all are currently being manufactured, and each drives home just how much fun sailing close to the water can be.

This isn’t a shootout among anorexic speedsters or a report on the best tender that doubles as a sailing dinghy. Its a look at perennials like the Optimist, Sunfish, and Laser-legendary competitors that have helped spawn some of the best sailors in the world. But its also a look at three of the newest entries in the dinghy-sailing circle: Bics Open, Hobies Bravo, and Laser Performances Bug. These agile, new sailing dinghies are chock full of fun and boat-handling features to inspire kids of all ages to go sailing.

Well also take a look at Chesapeake Light Crafts kit approach to getting started-one that offers meaningful lessons and tangible rewards well before the boat ever hits the water.

Scale down an Open 60, add sail technology long favored by windsurfers, and put it into play in a tough thermo-formed hull, and you have the makings for a new kind of watercraft. The result is a very interesting blend of performance and reliability that targets adolescent interest. When all is said and done, Bics boat is more akin to a sit-down windsurfer than a traditional Blue Jay. And like all good boats, its vying for attention not just based on performance, construction quality, and style, but just as importantly, on the price tag stuck to the hull.

The Open Bics light weight and wide, flat stern section means that even small chop can be surfed; and bursts of planing on a reach add a zing factor to dinghy sailing. The Open Bic is already an International Sailing Federation (ISAF)-sanctioned class, and fleets are developing around the US. Another bonus: Its an easily portable boat that can be carried like a windsurfer, adding excitement to a Sunday picnic at the beach.

The thermo-formed polyethylene hull is a modified hard-chine design with lots of beam aft. Sailed flat, the boat is agile enough to surf wavelets, and with a shape thats ergonomically friendly to hiking, the ensuing heel on the upwind leg puts just the right amount of chine into the water. In light air, careful control of heel can significantly reduce wetted surface.

The design team that developed the Open Bic saw it as a transition bridge from Optimist sailing to a more performance-oriented dinghy. An interesting innovation is that the Open Bic can be sailed with an Optimists rig and blades. This buy the hull only approach can be a significant incentive for parents with children outgrowing their Opti as fast as their boat shoes. However it wont be long before the kids want the fully turbo-charged feel delivered with the Open Bics well-shaped 4.5-square-meters rig, sail, and nicely foiled blades.

Bottom line: The Open Bic is fast, agile, and buckets of fun for kids uninspired by sailing in the slow lane.

Just when you think that Hobie Cat Co. has covered whats possible in beach-cat innovation, their design/engineering crew comes up with a new twist that reinvents the wheel. The Hobie Bravo is a good case in point.

In a recent visit to Backyard Boats ( www.backyardboats.com ) in Annapolis, Md., we got a good look at the Bravo. Nearly as narrow as a monohull but still quite stable, this quick-to-launch beach cat packs plenty of get-up-and-go. Its a simple to sail, entry-level boat that fast tracks learning the steer, sheet, and hike trilogy. The boat features a single, midline rudder and roto-molded hulls. The shape of the hulls provides enough lateral plane to allow a crew to make headway to windward.

The narrow (4 feet), 12-foot Bravo uses crew weight and hiking straps to add to the righting moment once the breeze is up. Whats done with webbing on larger cats has been converted to a shallow, rigid deck well on the Bravo. It does raise the weight of the boat to 195 pounds, but it offers comfortable seating plus room for cushions and a cooler. Kids or grown ups can have a Tom Sawyer-Huck Finn type of adventure aboard this fun little sailing machine. Or the family on a beach picnic can set it up and take turns speed reaching along a sandy shoreline.

The furling mast supports a roachy sail with slightly slanted vertical battens, helping to shape the boomless mainsail. The result is convenient sail handling, decent performance, and superior safety. Theres no boom to clobber the crew, and the roller-furled sail and mast are easily stepped in the tripod-like receiver. This interesting set of struts raises the top bearing point of the mast step and spreads rig loads out to the hulls. The furling mainsail offers the ability to reef, a big plus in a building breeze or when teaching children to sail.

Like all of the boats in the Hobie lineup, theres a wide range of specialty parts and fittings that make the boats fast to rig and easy to handle. The kick-up rudder is hung on gudgeons mounted in the center of stern, and just as rig loads have been effectively spread via the tripod step, the energy radiating from the large rudder is spread athwartships via a contoured deck element.

Bottom line: The boat is quick to rig, easy to launch, and responsive to beginners-more experienced sailors will have just as much fun power reaching when the breeze is up.

The Bug

A pocket-sized club trainer, the Bug is an evolution of the kids trainer/club racer that leverages lessons learned in Optis, Dyers, and Sabots. It pulls together the logic of a stable hull shape and simple-to-sail rig, and puts it all in a cost-effective package.

Lending to its success is designer Jo Richardss ergonomic, roto-molded hull, a fabrication that is as close to zero maintenance as a boat can get. The straight out-of-the-mold polyethylene skin gets a few decals, and theres no wood to refinish or gelcoat to wax. These tough, abrasion-resistant hulls have a bumper boat tolerance thats a big plus when it comes to kids learning to sail. Best of all, owners can start with a learn-to-sail rig and upgrade to a more performance-oriented mast and sail package (41 or 56 square feet) that kicks performance into the fast lane.

Oars and an outboard motor bracket can be added to turn the little sailboat into a dual-purpose dinghy. Even the bow painters means of attachment makes sense-no projecting hardware ready to knick the topsides of unintended contacts. Instead, theres a recessed hole in the stem allowing a line to be lead through and a knot used to keep the painter in place.

Bottom line: Aimed at club programs and families look for boats that can be transported on the car top, the Bug is easy to rig and definitely kid friendly. The fact that its manufacturer, Laser Performance, is an international interest and a major player in the performance dinghy industry means that this boat and its parts will be around for a while.

Hobie Bravo

Eastport Pram

Chesapeake Light Craft expedites boatbuilding for do-it-yourselfers looking to take their garage-built boats for a sail. The company pre-cuts parts, packs kits with all the materials, epoxy, and paint youll need, and leads homebuilders through a thoroughly detailed stitch-and-glue approach to assembly. Kits are available in various stages of completeness, ranging from plans only to the full package, including sail, hardware, running rigging, and paint.

The Eastport Pram is just shy of 8 feet, and the marine plywood and epoxy construction delivers a boat that weighs in, sans sailing rig, at just 62 pounds. Lighter than the comparatively sized Bug, this stiff, durable dinghy, rows like a real boat and sails comfortably with one or two aboard. In keeping with other good tender attributes, the Pram behaves under tow and is equally amicable when propelled by a small outboard or tacked up an estuary under sail.

Kit boatbuilding continues to have a niche following. Theres also an added-value feature worth noting: On one hand, the builder receives a box of pieces and the result of his or her endeavor leads to an aesthetic and utilitarian dinghy. In addition, the DIY skills the builder develops will be useful in other epoxy bonding, brightwork, or mono-urethane application projects. Such talents will benefit many other boat maintenance endeavors.

Whats hard to quantify is the sense of accomplishment derived from sailing a boat that you have built yourself. When the project is tackled in tandem with a child, spouse, or friend, the memories and the boat will last.

Bottom line: With neither sidedecks or a sealed hull, this is not a boat thats easy to recover from a capsize. So once the kids favor on-the-edge sailing in a building breeze, a non swamping, easier-righting boat is probably a better option. The Pram can then be put to use by their appreciative parents or grandparents.

Never in their wildest dreams did Bruce Kirby and Ian Bruce imagine that the Weekender (the Lasers original name) was destined to become an Olympic class sailboat and one of the most popular springboards for top-tier sailors in the world today. Originally envisioned as a car-topper for weekend campers, the cat-rigged, low freeboard sailing dinghy morphed from its original roots into a boat favored by college competitors and revered by generations of agile sailors of all ages. Even frostbiting winter sailors have locked onto the Laser.

Chesapeake Light Craft

Designed in 1969, the Lasers first few years were anything but smooth sailing. Popularity grew quickly, but along with the limelight came plenty of consternation. Dubbed a surfboard not a sailboat by a growing cross-section of the yachting elite-many parents warned junior sailors to steer as clear of Lasers as they did sex, drugs and rock-n-roll. The campaign failed, and junior sailors in yacht club programs around the country fell into the grip of the new one-design dinghy-discovering the sailboats proclivity to plane.

Dyer Dhows languished in boat sheds across the country as a new theme in sailing took hold. Dubbed fast is fun by sailor/engineer Bill Lee, the young Merlin of Santa Cruz, Calif., took the theme to big-boat sailing, merging California culture with the Laser logic of light displacement and planing hull shapes.

Best of all, the Laser embraced the ideal of a tightly controlled one-design class that put people on the water in identical boats and left winning and losing races up to sailing skill and tactics rather than a boats performance edge. For decades, the boat has been the single-handed sailors choice among junior sailing programs, and with the addition of the Radial, 4.7 and M rigs, smaller competitors have also found the boat to be a great sailing platform. Today, theres some lawyer saber-rattling over the sale of the design rights, but the boat remains more popular than ever.

The sleeved sail, two-part spar, daggerboard, and kick-up rudder make the boat a quick-to-rig and fast-to-get underway dinghy. Light-air efficiency is good for a one-design sailboat, but this means that as the breeze builds, the non-reefable sail can become a handful in a hurry. In fact, the boats Dr. Jekyll-and-Mr. Hyde demeanor is what builds talent among Laser practitioners. The big boys block the mainsail and blast off for the layline, while lighter sailors heavy-weather tactics include more nuanced de-powering and feathering. In light air, the tables turn, and the winner is often the sailor who planes quickest on the reaches. The old guards surfboard slam may have held some credence after all.

Bottom line: The Laser is a timeless classic thats easily transported and is built for performance. Its well suited to adrenaline-seeking teens as well as the more fit adult crowd.

Designed in 1947 by Floridian Clark Mills, the utilitarian Optimist could be made out of two sheets of plywood-and from its inception, the Optimist was meant to link kids with the water. Slipping into obscurity in the U.S., the little pram found fertile ground to grow in northern Europe. With just a few tweaks, the Scandinavians took Millss lines and parlayed them into whats become the favored junior sailing trainer for kids from Detroit to Timbuktu. Statistics show that there are about 30 builders worldwide putting out approximately 4,000 boats each year. With about 130,000 boats class registered and an estimated 300,000 total hulls built (amateur and pro), theres plenty of reasons to get excited about an Opti.

Performance boats

The example weve chosen is the USA-built McLaughlin boat, both a demonstration of high-quality FRP construction and modern manufacturing techniques. Its also a boat that can be purchased in a range of performance-inducing iterations-upgrades designated as club, intermediate, advanced, and professional versions. Like all performance sailboats, stiffness and strength-to-weight ratio is important. But class rules include a minimum weight, so the most competitive hulls meet the mandatory lower limit but use good engineering and building technique to reinforce the daggerboard slot and mast step and produce overall stiffness.

Sunfish

The low mast height and high aspect ratio sprit sail is very versatile, affording young (and small, 65 to 130 pounds) sailors a wide window of decent performance. The flat bottom, slab-sided hull is responsive to crew weight-driven trim changes, and the better the sailor, the more agile they become. Light-air performance is all about minimizing wetted surface and maximizing sail area projection. When the breeze starts to kick up, the sailor becomes the ballast, and the art of hiking, sheet handling, and tiller wiggling come into play.

Under careful adult supervision, two 6- to 8-year-olds can double-hand the friendly little dinghy, or one more-confident child can solo sail it. In fact, introducing kids to sailing with similar proportioned small prams has been a right of passage around for decades. A set of oarlock gudgeons can turn the pram into a functional dinghy thats also adaptable to the smaller Torqeedo outboard (www.torqeedo.com).

McLaughlin also markets a Roto-molded polyethylene version of the Opti and sells DIY kits for those who want to create their own wood version.

Bottom line: The Opti is like a first bicycle without the need for training wheels. The fact that at the last Olympics, over 80 percent of the winning sailors had gotten their start in an Optimist speaks well to the value of messing around in this particular dinghy.

Open Bic

Designed in 1951 by ice boaters Alexander Bryan and Cortland Heyniger, the hard chine Sunfish was the prototype board boat. In 1959, it made the transition into fiberglass, and over the following half-century, more than a quarter-million hulls would hit the water. Simplicity and decent sailing attributes combined with an attractive price to make the Sunfish the most popular one-design dinghy ever raced.

Far more than a platform for racers, these boats are an excellent training tool for sailors of all ages. Also built by Laser Performance, they reflect the fun of summer and put sailors in close contact with the water on which they sail. Its no surprise that the larger fleets coincide with warm water and many see going for a swim to be part and parcel of the low-freeboard experience.

The lateen rig is in keeping with the overall design concept and simplifies rigging. A short stub of a mast is stepped and a single halyard hoists the sail along with tilting V-shaped upper and lower booms.

The total sail area is nearly the same as the Laser, but the halyard hoist versatility of the lateen rig make it a handy beach boat and a little less daunting when the wind begins to build. The clean sail shape on one tack and deformation caused by the mast on the other tack are a slight drawback. The Laser rig is more efficient, but when caught out in a squall, its nice to be able to ease the halyard and dump the sail. Its also handy to be able to leave the boat tethered to a mooring, and the doused sail and short mast make it possible.

Multiple generations of sailors are often found sailing Sunfish, and the boat represents one of the best bargains to be found in the used boat market. When considering a pre owned boat, the potential buyer needs to take a close look at the daggerboard-to-hull junction and mast step, points where previous damage can create hard-to-fix leaks.

Bottom line: The Sunfish is a great beach boat that can turn a hot afternoon into a fun-filled water experience.

There were no losers in this group, and picking winners and runners-up proved a difficult task. The outcome had to be based on assumptions about how these boats would be used. For example, parents with a competitive 9-year-old who swims like a fish, always sprints for the head of the lunch line, and likes to steal bases in Little League probably have an Opti racer in the making. Less competitive junior sailors-future cruisers in the making-will do better learning aboard a Bug. Many newly formed sailing clubs target the boat as their trainer of choice.

The Bravo holds plenty of appeal for those with a lakeside cottage or a favored campground destination. Whether its a solo sail just before sunset or a fun race on Sunday, the quick to set up and put away features are a plus, and for those who feel that two hulls are better-the Bravo will hold plenty of appeal.

Serious competitors can campaign a Laser for life, and whether youre headed for a local district regatta or getting ready for the Olympic trials, the hull, rig, and sail remains identical-sort of like the Monaco Grand Prix being raced in a street legal Mustang.

Bic Opens new little speedster tickled our fancy, and as a trainer/performance boat crossover, it drew a strong nod of approval. Watching the junior sailors smiles as they sailed their Open Bics endorsed our opinion.

And if there is any boat that defines the essence of summer, the Sunfish takes the prize.

Originally known as the Laser, the ILCA dinghy is a single-handed racing dinghy. The biggest attraction of the ILCA dinghy is that it is protected by strict one-design class rules, which means that no changes are allowed to the boat unless they are specifically permitted in the rules. The result is that all ILCA boats are virtually identical, whether they are brand-new or 10 years old, making it the sailor that wins the race – not the boat. The ILCA dinghy is a challenging boat that rewards athleticism, subtle steering, and trimming techniques, as well as tactical excellence. It is a single-handed Olympic-class boat for both men and women and is sailed at club, national, and international levels. With over 225,000 boats in 140 countries, it is the world’s most popular adult and youth racing sailboat.

No fuss, just sailing.

One of the reasons the ILCA dinghy is so popular is the boat’s sheer simplicity. The two-part free-standing mast and sleeved sail make the boat easy to rig and its lightweight hull make it easy to carry and cartop.

A boat for life.

The ILCA formula combines one hull with three different rigs: ILCA 4, ILCA 6, and ILCA 7. Young sailors starting out in the ILCA 4 can move up in rig sizes as they grow physically and develop tactically without the need to buy a complete new boat every few years. The one-design protection also means that your boat will never be outdated, which explains why ILCA dinghies have such high resale values.

Finally, a strong class association that actively promotes and drives forward sailing around the globe makes mass production of the ILCA dinghy viable, keeping the cost of the boats and spares relatively low.

The ILCA Formula

A choice of rigs for different size sailors means three boats in one. See Equipment for more detailed boat diagrams.

  • Are your children reaching the age when they want to go sailing in a ILCA by themselves?
  • Does your husband or wife fancy the occasional sail in your ILCA?
  • When you drive two hours to get to the water have you found it is too windy for you to go sailing?
  • Are you too light to sail with the ILCA 7 rig?

The ILCA formula is the answer to all these questions. By changing only the sail and lower mast, an ILCA dinghy can be sailed comfortably in a great variety of wind conditions and provide exciting but controlled sailing even for sailors weighing as little as 35 kg. The ILCA formula is a three-rig option that has been adopted by a number of sailing schools as a simple and economical way for sailors of different sizes and abilities to sail in a wide range of winds and reduce the amount of “down time.”

The ILCA 4 uses a short pre-bent lower mast to maintain a balanced helm and a sail area that is 35% smaller than the ILCA 7. It is ideal for the lighter-weight sailor graduating from Optimist.

The ILCA 6 is the next step up in size. It uses a more flexible and slightly shorter lower mast together with a sail area 18% smaller than the ILCA 7. The ILCA 6 has a large following with national and international regattas and World Championships for men, women, and youth, attracting as many countries and competitors as the ILCA 7. Many countries support a full ILCA 6 youth program. In addition to having a strong following among lighter-weight sailors, the ILCA 6 is the women’s single-handed dinghy at the Olympic Games.

The ILCA 7 can be sailed by any weight in light winds, but as the wind increases, it is better suited to higher sailor weights. The ILCA 7 is a single-handed dinghy for men at the Olympic Games.

Apart from the strong second-hand market for the ILCA 7, there is an even stronger second-hand market for ILCA 6 and ILCA 4 lower mast and sails as a separate package from the hull.

Why sail the ILCA dinghy?

One of the greatest things about the ILCA dinghy is that it offers a huge amount of fun and family pleasure to all ages, yet at the same time it satisfies the desire for excellence and a physical test at the highest level in the Olympic Games. The ILCA dinghy is something very special. Over 200,000 owners have been attracted to its simple charm and continue to be attracted at a rate of nearly 4,000 new boats per year.

Seeing 15- and 16-year-old youngsters, fresh out of Optimists, getting a thrill out of sailing an Olympic-class boat in full control with the ILCA 4 or ILCA 6 rig is as exciting as listening to the stories of 60-year-old Masters recounting their wild rides on Pacific rollers during the 1997 World Masters Championship in Chile.

The ILCA dinghy is challenging and it is rewarding, whether at the club level or the Olympic Games. When you take your 10-year-old boat out for a local race, the challenge is to work harder, hike longer, be smarter, and sail better than the other ILCA sailors. At the end of the race, you count the number of boats behind you and you are rewarded with the knowledge that you beat them fair and square by your own skill and effort. Even if there are no boats behind you, the challenge is to go out next time knowing that you have the same equipment and the potential to improve.

And there is a bonus! It is quick to rig, it keeps you fit, and is inexpensive.

When you look in the center pages of the Handbook and count ILCAs sailing in 115 different countries all over the world, and you see that ILCA has achieved the highest-ever country entry at the Olympic Games and see how many countries are entering ILCA World Championships, you perhaps realize just how great our little boat is and why it is so important to look after it with a strong class association.

Transporting a sailboat is a major sailor problem that landlubbers never even think about. But it’s a problem any sailor has to deal with. Trailers are fine for medium-sized boats while car-topping is an equally good option for smaller ones. Car-topping depends on bot the size of your boat and that of your car.

The number of sailboats you can cartop is limited. The Laser and Sunfish are the most popular cartoppable sailboats. They’re small enough to fit on the roof of most standard cars and light enough to be hoisted up there by one or two people.

Best Car-topping sailboat

The best cartopping sailboat is a tie between the Laser and the Sunfish. Both dinghies are extremely popular and come standardized with interchangeable rigs. They’re fairly small with a length of thirteen feet nine inches and a beam of four feet. The Sunfish weighs 120 lbs while the Laser is only 10 pounds heavier.

Their relatively small size and low weight mean they can be carried on the roof of many ordinary cars without any extensive modifications besides the addition of a roof rack. Cartopping is usually merely a matter of hoisting the boat onto the roof and securing it with straps.

Cartopping has some advantages over other boat hauling methods like trailers, for example. You don’t need to worry about your boat getting dented when it’s hit by other cars or when it hits other obstacles if you veer too hard for instance. There is also the advantage of not having to worry about the towing capacity of your car. A vast majority of vehicles have a roof load capacity of at least 165 lbs. Carrying a 130-pound sailboat shouldn’t pose any problems.

In addition to the Laser and Sunfish, other small sailboats and kayaks of comparable size (14 feet or thereabouts) and weight are just as easy to cartop. At this point, the Laser is more of a design standard than a brand anyway.

How do you cartop a sailboat?

You start by removing the mast, rigging, and all the other accessories, leaving only the hull. These should be stored separately, preferably in a single bag. You then hoist the hull onto the roof of your car, facedown. 

Without tools, this can be a two-person job. But you can still do it alone if the boat isn’t too heavy. But the most energy-efficient way is to just slide the boat onto the roof instead of hoisting it above your head.

There are other simple caveats, mostly common sense. You need to pack your car somewhere that allows you to safely load and unload your boat. A crowded parking lot or a cliffside, for example, wouldn’t be ideal.

Can you cartop a boat by yourself?

Yes. this can be accomplished by simply lifting the boat and placing it on the roof, sliding it, or by the use of simple inexpensive tools.

Cartopping methods

This is the easiest and requires no additional equipment. As long as you have a roof rack with a crossbar, you’re good to go. You lift the boat, bow first, and lean it against the roof of your car so it forms a ramp. You have to anchor the stern so it doesn’t slide. You then move over to the stern and just slide the boat onto the roof before securing it with straps. 

The ladder method

This method is best suited to heavier boats. It requires the attachment of a removable ladder onto your roof rack. You use the ladder as an inclined plane and slide the boat up it.

The pipe technique

You can use the pipe method if the bars of your roof rack are round and hollow. It involves attaching two pipes to the roof rack and using them as an inclined plane on which you can slide your boat. More advanced methods use ropes and a winch. This allows you to slide the boat up the pipes by just turning a crank as demonstrated below:

Securing your boat

Strapping your boat onto the roof rack and centering it on the bars for an even distribution of weight is common sense enough but there are other additional methods of protecting it.

Orient it facing forward – The front of the boat should face the front of the car just like it does in the water. This takes advantage of aerodynamics to reduce drag.

Load it upside down – This prevents dents on the hull.

Pad the touchpoints – Placing foam padding where the boat comes into contact with the rack prevents your boat from getting a small dent every time you hit a bump on the road. This is especially important if you aren’t loading your boat upside down. You can skip the whole headache by just getting a rack with padded bars.

A single-handed racing dinghy; it’s the Laser. The Laser dinghy’s most appealing feature is that it is protected by rigorous one-design class rules, which means that no changes to the boat are permitted unless it’s specified in the rules. As a result, whether a boat is brand new or ten years old, all Laser boats are nearly identical, allowing the sailor to win the race rather than the boat. The Laser is a difficult boat that rewards athleticism, sophisticated steering and trimming methods, and tactical mastery. Note that it’s a singlehanded Olympic class boat that is sailed at the club, national, and international levels by both men and women. It is the world’s most popular adult and junior racing sailboat, with over 200,000 boats in 140 nations. So, in this article, I will give information about the Laser boats as well as the speeds they can attain. So, keep reading!

The Laser Formula

The Laser Formula combines a single hull with three rigs: standard, radial, and 4.7. Young sailors who start out in the 4.7 can progress in rig size as they improve physically and tactically. They also don’t have to buy a new boat every few years. Because of the one-design protection, the Laser will never be obsolete. And, this explains why Lasers generally have high resale prices.

The Laser Formula also refers to the choice of rigs for different weights of people. It’s basically like having three boats in one. The Laser can be sailed easily in all wind conditions by modifying only the sail and lower mast. And it provides exhilarating yet controlled sailing for any sailor weighing as little as 35 kg.

So, the Laser Formula is a three-rigged sailboat that has been adopted by a number of sailing schools as a simple and cost-effective solution to keep sailing in all winds and reduce “downtime.” The Laser 4.7 has a 35 percent reduced sail area than the Laser Standard and a short pre-bent lower mast to maintain a balanced helm. It’s perfect for those learning to sail or those graduating from the Optimist class.

The next step up is the Laser Radial. It has a lower mast that is more flexible and slightly shorter, as well as a sail area that is 18% smaller than the Laser Standard. National and international regattas, as well as World Open and Youth Championships, attract as many countries and competitors as the Laser Standard Rig. The Laser Radial has large popularity among lighter weight sailors, as well as children, women, and masters racing.

Many countries now offer a comprehensive Laser Radial Youth program. The majority of national yachting authorities responded that the Laser Radial was their favorite youth boat in a study done by the International Sailing Federation. In moderate winds, any weight can sail the Laser Standard, but as the wind increases, it is better suited to heavier sailor weights. A Comparison of the Rigs

The Laser sailboat offers a variety of rig sizes, with the goal of making the boat sailable by a wide range of sailors and sailor weights. This happens by swapping out the lower mast section and leaving all other components the same. There are three different rig sizes now available. These are the ‘Standard,’ ‘Radial,’ and ‘4.7.’ Below is a graphic that compares the three rigs, and we’ll go through each one in detail in the next part.

Laser Standard

This is the most popular Laser rig size, as well as the one that came standard on the boat when it was built. It has a sail area of 7.06 square meters (about 76 square feet). The Laser Class approved a new ‘Standard’ sail in 2018, known as the ‘MKII’ or ‘Mark 2’ to differentiate it from the previous version. The difference is in the panels, among other things. Horizontal cut panels were used on the original ‘Standard’ sail. Note that radial cut panels are featured on the new MKII sail. Note that there is no size difference between these two variants. Moreover, all-new Laser Standard sails are now available in this upgraded version.

Keep in mind that when you look at the panels you can identify if you have a ‘Standard’ sail. It’s most likely a conventional sail if they’re horizontal. Then, you can measure the luff or the front edge of the sail along the mast sleeve. From the peak of the sail to the bottom, this measurement should be around 5130 mm or 200 inches. Note that the ‘Standard’ lower mast portion should be 2865 mm (113 inches) in length. In comparison to the two smaller mast portions, it is a rather sturdy mast section.

The Laser 4.7 (also known as the ILCA 5) is the smallest of the three Laser sails. It was firstly used for young sailors. The 4.7 lower mast part is one-of-a-kind because it features a pre-bend near the boom fitting. This makes depowering the sail considerably easier. This is the smallest Laser sail size, and if you have an ancient one, it’s unlikely it’s a 4.7 sail. The 4.7 sail has cross-cut panels, similar to the traditional ‘Standard’ sail. Many 4.7 sails also include a 4.7 logo on the material.

You can also measure the luff which is the front edge of the sail along the mast sleeve. From the peak of the sail to the bottom, this measurement should be around 4080 mm or 160 inches. Note that the lower mast part of the ‘4.7 features a pre-bend and should measure around 1810 mm (71 inches). The bend is the most obvious feature that distinguishes it from the others.

Laser Radial

The Laser ‘Radial’ sail, formerly known as the ‘M’ rig, is smaller than the ‘Standard’ sail, measuring 5.76 square meters (62 square feet). It was the only Laser sail at the time to include radial cut panels, which made de-powering the sail easier in strong gusts. Both the Standard and Radial sails have the radial cut design, as mentioned above for the ‘Standard’ rig. The blue panels at the tack and clew of the sail are another telltale sign of a Radial sail size.

Looking at the panels is the first and most obvious way to identify if you have a ‘Radial’ sail. It’s most likely a radial sail if they’re radial, as in radiating out from the center. From the peak of the sail to the bottom, this measurement should be around 4560 mm or 180 inches. Note that the lowest mast part of the ‘Radial’ should be 2262 mm (89 inches) in length. It’s also a little smaller than the usual portion in diameter.

Laser Sailing

Sailing on a laser differs significantly from sailing on other boats. There is no motor, paddle, or oars on a laser dinghy. To move your boat across the water, you must master the technique of harnessing the wind. It could be a calm breeze one day, making sailing a peaceful contact with nature. And then a violent gust the next, putting your talent in syncing your movements with the boat, the wind, and the water to the test.

The Laser dinghy is used in laser sailing, which is a popular water sport. Despite the boat’s simple design, Laser sailors and racers encounter a unique set of hurdles that necessitate specific physical abilities. Laser sailing requires a high level of fitness in order for a sailor to be able to handle the trekking and body-twisting skills that are required in sailing, particularly when sailing upwind.

Keep in mind that Laser radial sailing is often reserved for sailors of a lighter weight. The Laser Radial, as opposed to the Laser Standard, has a smaller sail and is chosen by many female laser sailors. The International Class Association, like the Laser Standard, has stringent supervision over the design. The size of the sail as well as the lower half of the mast are the only differences.

Different Wind Conditions and Laser Sailing

It’s all about getting your head out of the boat in light winds because even a small increase in wind speed results in a significant difference in boat speed. To maintain maximum water-line length, sailors place themselves well forward in the boat. In other words, their bodyweight must be just behind the centerboard. Not only is this faster, but it also gives the rudder a better feel with the bow in. In addition, it avoids the urge to produce too much leeward heel, which many people do only to obtain a greater rudder feel.

In medium winds, you just focus on the power. Meaning that you need to modify the sail controls to stay fully powered but not overpowering. This is especially crucial if you see a gradual increase or drop in wind speed during the race or course. So, it’s important that you hike “straight out.” To get the proper fore and aft trim with the waves, active body movement, or “kinetics,” is essential. Remember that if you spend most of your time leaning forward, you will most likely set too far back, and vice versa. You should spend approximately the same time for forwarding and backward body movements.

In strong winds, it’s natural to want to use as much power as possible, but this isn’t the same as making maximum upwind progress. Holding on to too much sheet will actually reduce your velocity, whereas loosening the sheet will not only maintain the boat flat. It will also assist it to accelerate in the wind rather than just heeling over and slide sideways. You may feel as if you’re pointing at the boat to leeward if you bear away somewhat. But in really strong gusts, you’re probably retaining your height better. The Laser will slip less sideways if it maintains its pace. As a result, sailing “fast and low” is frequently effective here. The most important suggestion is to maintain a steady heel angle. If the boat “staggers” upwind, it is not only slow, but it also means you are putting in the extra effort.

How Fast Do Laser Sailboats Go?

The fastest recorded speed for a laser sailboat is 18.6 knots. The fastest recorded speed was at 18.6 knots in 2017 in the United Kingdom. The previous record was set in Honolulu in 2009, when the Laser reached a speed of 16.8 knots. Mark Denzer of Honolulu, Hawaii, has held the official Laser sailboat speed record of 16.8 knots since January 16, 2009. High wind warnings, civil defense alerts, state government closures, and gusts up to 60 knots made for a great day for Laser sailing on this record-breaking day. However, the wind never went beyond 30 knots during the record-breaking attempt.

In gusts of approximately 15 mph, you can typically get the full-rig to plane (reaching) if you’re lightweight. Even at lesser wind speeds, it’s possible. However, by today’s standards, the Laser is hardly a fast boat; a Hobie 16 would be faster. And GPS-recorded speeds can sometimes be inaccurate. Without going into the technical gritty of how a GPS device measures velocity, it’s important to distinguish between instantaneous speed (for example, down a wave) and speed maintained over some specific distance. As a side note, ‘official’ speed records are set over a 500-meter course. Keep in mind that the upper wind strengths for a Laser are in the 30-40 mph range.

Using a GPS, you can record some incredible speeds. These speeds, of course, do not stay long because they are caused by position variations in the GPS system. That’s why GPS’s average speed over time is so important. As a result, it is dependent on how this speed was measured, under what conditions, and for how long.

In a medium breeze upwind, most laser sailors will attain a hull speed of just under 5 knots, which is why you’ll often see the crew condensed at the windward mark in a specific range of wind. When the breeze is steady, with minimal shifts and a consistent velocity, the leaders in the crew have a lot less to work with. And, the sailors further down the crew have fewer external inputs, so they make fewer mistakes. You can see how, once everyone hits maximum hull speed, most boats sit at the same speed upwind with little opportunity to break through that barrier.

In lighter winds, more skilled sailors will make better use of the available wind energy. And, as a result, maintain higher average speeds around the course than sailors further down the crew who move around too much. They also have a sail set up in a less-than-optimal shape and steer in such a way that energy isn’t converted into forward drive as efficiently.

In severe winds, on the other hand, expert sailors can now sail upwind at hull speed almost constantly. However, there’s the exception of brief times when tacking or navigating through a tough area of water. And they will occasionally exceed it through steering technique and very powerful hiking, allowing the boat to surf or semi-plane for short periods of time. But, further down the fleet, this additional wind, and wave energy becomes a hindrance. So, the boat and sailor will begin to fight it as they deal with increased weather helm. The water will constantly come over the bow, gusts will knock you sideways instead of straight ahead, and so on.

Laser Sailing Upwind

Balance is the key to sailing upwind. The more balanced your boat is, the faster it will travel. You have three tools to regulate the boat speed, just as the pro sailors. The first step is to trim your sail. It is critical that your sail is properly set up. When your sail is properly set, the Laser’s balance should be great. Bear in mind that sailing is a very dynamic sport in which conditions can change rapidly. Meaning that the balance in your boat will change every time the wind strength or direction changes. So, the balance in the Laser will get disturbed every time you hit a tiny or larger wave. And, in order to maintain balance, you have to counteract the boat’s movements.

Your rudder is the second thing you’ll need to keep your Laser balanced while sailing. The rudder can be used to offset disruptive conditions like wind and water. So, you can use the rudder to change course when the wind direction changes slightly. Like this, the pressure in the sail remains constant and your boat remains balanced. You may also use the rudder to balance the boat when it hits a wave. Your bodyweight is the third and last option for balancing the boat. When the boat’s nose starts to rise due to a wave, you have to proceed forward. But, move back as soon as the wave passes and the boat wants to continue down again. This minimizes the disturbance in your Laser and maximizes the boat’s balance. The faster you go, the better balanced your Laser is.

Offshore, the wind can be quite shifty depending on the course’s proximity to the coast. This is sometimes exceedingly close due to stadium racing so that the audience can watch from the shore. This involves taking advantage (and tacking) on every shift in classes like the Laser, which tacks quickly. The angle at which you sail to the windward mark varies a lot. Keep in mind that this will necessitate quick sailing.

Onshore there may be huge waves, as well as a more steady wind, depending on the strength of the wind and the depth of the sea. At this point, we’re focusing on tack minimization since the wind is more likely to be stable, and it takes longer to get up to full speed. In other words, the potential tack loss is much higher. To ensure you can exit with maximum speed, you must choose where to tack extremely carefully. This applies both in terms of the shift and layline, and especially where you tack on the wave.

Laser Sailboat Top Speed – The Bottom Line

So, it is possible for a Laser to hit 20 knots for limited periods of time. These can be when going down the face of a wave. Who among us hasn’t sailed down a wave in 20+ mph only to have the boom swing into the centreline with an unloaded sail? Much more than 20 knots, though, is quite rare, as as you reach higher winds, such as around 30 knots. This is because the sail will stay out and always have some load on it, even on a huge offshore wave.

When sailing upwind, the best Laser sailors in the world all have the same goal in mind. They have, however, mastered the art of perfecting this technique. They are quite proactive in addressing all of the minor variables. As a result, their modifications are smaller, the balance is improved, and the boat moves faster. You may, however, learn to sail the laser as balanced as the experienced guys do so.

In general, I’ve found that the sustained boat speed is usually around 1/2 the wind speed, up to about 10-12 knots. In 15 knots of wind, the Laser will do 7-8 knots, and in 20 knots, it will do 10 knots. Around 6-7 knots boat speed, it appears to come up onto a plane. As it approaches 10 knots, steering becomes more challenging in order to keep the sail full and pulling. It also prevents being hit by a wave that knocks the boat speed down much or causes you to lose excellent sail trim.

Note that any “lash” (free movement) between the tiller and the rudder creates a serious challenge in trying to preserve accurate control of heading. So, trim and consistent power, and the boat direction becomes increasingly responsive to waves and harder to control. As the Laser approaches 12-13 knots through the water, it gets increasingly difficult to maintain the pace for an extended period of time.

Overall, a Laser will cruise at close to hull speed upwind as soon as the wind picks up enough to get the boat moving. Also, in planing conditions, 10+ knots beam reaching and close to that speed downwind regularly occur around a course. How Much Does A Laser Sailboat Cost? New vs Old

The cost of a laser sailboat can vary. It’s just like buying a car, you half to shop around for the best deal.

A Laser sailboat new will cost anywhere from $5000 to $6000. A used Laser sailboat will cost you between $2000 and $6000. The price of the boat will depend on the year it was built and the condition it is in.

Buying a laser is a fairly simple process. Since they are so small it is much easier to transport. A lot of them do come with trailers, but some do not. Just be sure you have a way to move it when needed. The laser is 14 feet long. To help compare to a truck, a long bed truck is usually 8 feet.

If you really want to save some money, you should look all over the country. I can find some good deals on laser sailboats right now, but they are about three states away. If you are willing to drive to the boat and pick it up, you could save a thousand bucks or two.

Purchasing A Laser Sailboat

If you have decided to get into laser sailing, you will need a boat. The question is do you buy used or new? That will depend on your budget and possibly, your intended use. The intended use will either be racing, recreational, or both. The good thing is, as long as the boat is well kept and In good condition, it will work for both options.

When it comes to buying a used laser, there are a few things you need to check.

The first thing to check is the hull. Make sure it is solid and has no holes or soft spots. The next thing to check is to see if it comes with everything you need. I once was given a laser boat, but it was just the hull and nothing else. I actually ended up selling it. It was not a project I wanted to take on. I wish I had it today though.

When purchasing a used laser, you may be asking how old it is.

The list above should help you identify the year of your laser sailboat. If the number is not on this list it must be much older.

The Parts Of A Laser Sailboat

The laser has a few different parts that you need to know about.

First, we have the mast. The mast is a two-part mast that can be adjusted depending on the size of the sail you are using. It gets set into the mast step, which is a hole in the hull where the mast goes.

Second, we have the sails. There are 3 different sizes of sails you can use on your laser. The size will depend on your weight. You need to have good balance for the laser sailboat and sail size will help accomplish this. The three sails are listed below:

3 Laser Sail Types

  • Standard Sail – sail size 7.06 meters, crew size 154lbs +
  • Radial Sail – sail size 5.76 meters, crew size 121-154lbs
  • 4.7 Sail (smallest) – sail size 4.7 meters, crew size 77-121lbs

You can also use the smaller sails for high winds. Each sail will also contain 3 battens.

Battens aren’t necessary, but they do help support the leech. To find out more about battens read the article Can You Sail Without Battens?

The third is the daggerboard. The daggerboard goes down through a slot in the hull. You put it all the way down for upwind, up for downwind, and middle for reaching. The daggerboard is a type of keel.

Fourth is the rudder. the rudder will be down when sailing and needs to be kept tight. If it kicks up on you, you will lose the ability to steer the boat.

The fifth part of the boat is the boom. You will not be able to use your sails without the boom. It is very similar looking to the mast. Just make sure when you purchase your boat, that you have both the mast and the boom.

The sixth and final part you need is the tiller. The tiller is what controls your rudder and allows you to steer the boat. You will also want a tiller extender. The extender will allow you to control the boat when leaning out over the high side for balance.

Those 6 parts are the most necessary components to check for when purchasing a laser sailboat. You will also need the lines for raising and lowering sails, but I’m sure you know about those.

The laser sailboat is a lot of fun for beginners and experienced sailors. They are fairly cheap and easy to use. There is a part of balance required to use them, but it should come pretty easy with some practice. I would love to own a laser, but at this time I do not. They are great for racing as well. The International Laser Class Association runs a circuit of Masters events for Laser sailors over 35 years of age. The Masters circuit culminates in the Laser Masters World Championship which is held annually. The Laser Masters racing circuit is the largest and most heavily attended masters racing group of any one-design class in the world.
