The 164-foot superyacht Aurora from Italian shipyard Rossinavi won this year’s Yacht of the Year award in Rob report’s Best of the Best for 2018. The vessel’s bold exterior lines can be credited to well-known naval design architect Fulvio de Simoni, whose studio ItalProjects is based in Milan. And the sough-after residential interior designer Achille Salvagni crafted the winning superyacht’s interior—not just the decor, but he designed the furniture, the shape of the bulkheads, and even the lighting. Robb Report sat down with Salvagni for his perspective of the project.

What was the first step with Aurora’s interior?

The first challenge, given the exterior’s strong character, was to define the mood we wanted. My solution was to soften the interior with curves and a sense of youth connected to the 28-year-old owner. If I’d used the same muscular design as the exterior, which was complete when I came on, we would’ve created a monster. The yacht, with its internal slopes, was more like designing the interior of a racecar.

How did you make it all work?

I turned negatives into positives. In the master cabin were two ugly stainless-steel beams with lots of pipes near the forward window. There was no way to hide them, so I turned them into wings and covered [them] with white leather. It was one of the suite’s highlights.

You also designed a number of the furnishings.

For the piece of art the owner was most proud of, I created a foyer at the end of a hallway to showcase it. I designed the rest of the furniture, lamps, and even the dining-room table with his personality in mind. I’m different from most designers because I shape interiors, rather than decorate them. I first define the volumes and patterns of each room, and choose the materials of the shapes, all the way down to details like door handles.

Motor Yacht

Aurora is a custom motor yacht launched in 2017 by Lurssen Yachts in Rendsburg, Germany and most recently refitted in 2019.

Lürssen has remained a family-run German shipyard since its inception in 1875 and is now in its fourth generation of private ownership. The company was founded by Friedrich Lürssen with a desire to create a leading shipyard in both quality and performance.

Aurora measures 74.00 metres in length, with a max draft of 3.80 feet and a beam of 13.20 feet.

Aurora has a steel hull with an aluminium superstructure.

Winch Design is an award-winning design studio, established in 1986 as a specialist exterior and interior yacht designer, by Andrew Winch and his wife Jane.

Aurora also features naval architecture by Lurssen Yachts.

120′ Nordhavn Aurora: Experienced Owners Inspiring Next-Level Yacht Interior Design

Most yacht interior design projects begin and end with the client. They educate us with their needs, challenge us with their expectations, and inspire us with their enthusiasm. Such was the case with the 120’ Nordhavn, Aurora , aboard which we collaborated with experienced – and adventurous – owners to execute a yacht interior design that was simple yet elegant and contemporary, with each space onboard planned for functionality.

  It takes owning a yacht or two – or, in this case, commissioning your sixth – to know exactly how you like to live aboard. When I met with the owners of the 120’ Nordhavn Aurora at the beginning of the build stage, I was immediately inspired by their enthusiasm for enjoying life aboard their yachts. They were the biggest inspiration when designing this yacht of unsurpassed quality, style and pedigree.

First of all, this Nordhavn is not a typical 120’ yacht. It is a full-displacement, ABS-certified, 28’-beam yacht that is much closer in feel to a 150-footer – a serious ocean-going vessel with a luxurious interior. The new yacht offered the perfect amount of space for these owner/operators to bring on a captain and crew and embark on cruising adventures along the North Pacific Coast while entertaining their four children and numerous friends.

  The experienced owners were comfortable giving me license to oversee the space planning, yacht interior design , and luxury décor .

The owners’ passion, aside from yachting, is cooking and entertaining. Their brief was simple yet thorough: a comfortable and functional layout prioritizing cooking and entertaining that incorporated several specific requests, including a galley redesign which differed from the original proposed layout. 

Watching a client light up with enthusiasm while bringing their ideas to life is a yacht interior designer’s dream. Bringing that into reality, however, is a challenge we accept with gusto!

  When the owners told us they wanted to change the original specifications and layout of the galley to include all Miele and SubZero appliances, at first I said “no problem!” until I realized the true extent of these owners’ passion for cooking. Their dream appliance list included a full-height refrigerator, full-height refrigerator/freezer, two refrigerator drawers, two dishwashers, two sinks, two ovens, a steam oven, a microwave oven, a Salamander broiler, an electric cooktop with four burners, a BBQ grill, a teppanyaki grill, wok burner, and a trash compactor, as well as ample storage space and a table with two chairs. My initial thought after hearing their list was that these owners had “appliance fever”!

We let them know we would have to make some compromises to accommodate all of their wishes and still have adequate countertop space along with the needed upper and lower cabinets. They continued to give us their input until together we found a layout and combination of appliances and cabinetry design that best suited their needs and provided a truly exceptional and efficient galley space that would inspire any would-be chef.

The enclosed flybridge became known as the “second galley,” as this is where we situated a full bar with under-counter refrigerator/freezer drawers, a wine cooler, trash compactor, dishwasher and electric BBQ. Incorporating the expansive windows that grace this space was a challenge for Nordhavn Yachts that they too accepted – this being their largest flagship build – (read more about designing large windows on yachts in our blog post “The Nature of Yacht Interiors” ). The end result, however, was truly spectacular and gave the owners a beautiful area in which to cook and entertain while enjoying the never-ending views.

We were also tasked with creating the architectural detailing of the yacht interior, as well as the built-in custom furniture design and all of the contemporary styled loose custom furniture throughout. To keep the tone comfortable and sophisticated, we implemented a variety of exotic woods and carved details, including rich American cherry joinery with burl and walnut accents, a variety of unique marble and onyx, and mosaic stonework. A combination of polished chrome and satin nickel details, hardware, and light fixtures was implemented to balance the blend of modern and classic styling.

Another specific request of the owners was a neutral backdrop with colors to be brought in with art and accessories .

We continued the comfortable and sophisticated theme through the main deck and in the sky lounge. The sky lounge had an especially inviting informality ideal for playing cards at the leather-topped, nickel accented, walnut game table or watching a movie while lounging on the sumptuous caramel-colored leather sofa.

Because the owners are also wine and coffee enthusiasts, both the bar on the main deck and the marble-topped bar in the sky lounge were fitted with refrigerator drawers, wine coolers, ice makers and whole bean/ground coffee systems with warming drawers.

  In the lower deck staterooms we continued the attention to entertaining by incorporating refreshment areas with Nespresso machines and refrigerator drawers in each of the guest foyers.

Shoji screens in the guest staterooms filter natural light from the windows and neutral fabric panels call attention to the rich cherry wainscoting. Simple yet elegant Italian linens topped by custom embroidered duvets created luxury bedding which replaced the typical quilted bedspreads that once were the standard in yacht interiors.

Working with such experienced owner/operators who easily communicated their needs made the Aurora project one of my favorites – and one that was recognized by the yachting industry as a finalist in the prestigious World Superyacht Awards and The International Yacht & Aviation Awards.

Our clients appreciated the harmony and balance of the yacht interior design and functionality and encouraged us to push the envelope – particularly when it came to space planning challenges. The result is a beautiful yacht aboard which the owners accompanied the crew on the shakedown cruise, making the long Trans-Pacific journey from the Nordhavn yard in China to Vancouver, Canada, before setting off on adventures of their own.

The 74-meter luxury yacht Aurora was delivered in 2017. Her striking exterior and distinctive interior are both the work of the Winch Design team. With rich mahogany and stainless steel exterior furnishings, she reflects the romance of luxury travel on transatlantic liners. Each deck was carefully planned to include family spaces. Classic features combined with innovative details such as a large portlight in the main staircase and custom, state-of-the-art lighting across each deck give her authentic charm. Her interior is based on the Art Deco style of the 1920s, drawing inspiration from influential artists and designers of that era.

Superyacht Interiors: The Top Luxury Designs

Everyone knows that a yacht or superyacht is nothing without a luxury interior. Indeed, there’s now a whole range of interior designers who either specialize in or regularly create yacht interiors. So, how do you find the best projects? Here at Insplosion, we want to help. That’s why we’ve gathered a list of our top luxury superyacht interiors !

Brigadoon | studio indigo.

Including the Brigadoon in this list is pretty mandatory. After all, this luxury yacht by Studio Indigo is an actual winner of the World Superyacht Awards 2019! Thus, this project is all about the grand but understated mid-century luxury decor. The flowers, the wood, and navy-colored details combine to make this into a pretty classic luxury boat interior. Indeed, it’s the beautiful and neutral harmony that truly takes this project to the next level.

Besides, it’s quite a practical design. As you can see, the bedrooms and closets are amazingly organized. It’s all about luxury, yes, but also about comfort and practicality. The high seas are no place for clutter, which can cause accidents in bad weather.

But, in contrast with the brown color palette, you have this lovely deck area. With its slightly japandi style influences, this is the perfect place to relax in at the end of a long day.

Aurora Borealis | Winch Design

The Aurora Borealis does justice to its namesake. Indeed, it is as white and bright of an interior as the aurora itself. However, there are all sorts of little decor elements which are reminiscent of the sea. Just notice the shell-shaped ashtray and sea-horse patterns on some of the pillows! Finally, the mid-century lighting really adds a nice touch to the ambiance.

But there’s much more to admire. How do you like the lovely art deco bar? The lines themselves almost remind you of corals and shells. And the airy, light decor is just as present in the dining and living areas. While just as luxurious, this interior is much different from the Brigadoon’s.

Finally, we’ll leave you with this gorgeous view of the yacht’s deck at night. Once again, the seatings and patterns are chosen to be evocative of the ocean. It’s as gorgeous of a yacht design as you could ask for.

Superyacht Forever | St. Corona Interiors

If you’re looking for something equally light, but much more sober, look no further than Superyacht Forever . This creation by St. Corona Interiors also follows a white color scheme, but the decor elements aren’t quite as feminine. There’s not as much art deco influence here. The lines are much cleaner and simpler, almost minimalist compared to the glamour of the previous project.

Top 5 Living Room Design Ideas

The bar and living room area follow more or less the same route. Indeed, they favor light color schemes and clean, shapely lines. It’s all about practical luxury, functional without being quite minimalist.

Finally, we have the bedroom. While not opulent in the slightest, this room has the same sort of stylish beauty as the rest of the interior. Once again: you don’t want clutter on the high seas!

At last, we reach the Logica .  This project for a luxury yacht by Marin Kemp Design is everything our interior decor dreams are made of. Like the Aurora, it takes a much more art deco approach to superyacht interiors. The little metal details are just what we like to call luxury hardware!

The bedroom and living space designs follow very similar color schemes and strategies. Since you can’t have any clutter, it’s all about denoting luxury through the tiniest details.

Finally, you have the bathroom project, which is as light and gorgeous as the rest of the design. It’s a luxury bathroom through and through.

120' (36.75m) Nordhavn MY AURORA Now for Sale

The 120-foot (36.75m) MY AURORA is now for sale with Northrop & Johnson Yacht Brokers Sean Doyle and Wes Sanford . The explorer yacht is asking $12,900,000.

MY AURORA is the ideal platform for those wanting the ability to cruise anywhere in the world safely and in the utmost comfort. The luxury superyacht showcases an immense interior volume of 414 gross tons. MY AURORA features an elegant interior styling complemented by large windows, which enhances the feeling of space. The yacht’s main salon is ideal for entertaining with its ample seating and formal dining. At the same time, the skylounge is well-suited for relaxing with an 80-inch TV and L-shaped settee.

Superyacht MY AURORA offers accommodations for 10 guests in five spacious staterooms. The master suite is located for privacy on the main deck while the additional four staterooms are on the lower deck. The motor yacht’s additional staterooms include two king-bed staterooms, a queen-bed stateroom and a twin-bed stateroom.

MY AURORA’s outdoor living spaces are as impressive as her interior. There is alfresco dining on the main deck aft, sumptuous lounge space on the skylounge aft and a jacuzzi with sensational views on the flybridge aft.

Nordhavn built this explorer yacht in 2014. The superyacht has impressive seaworthiness as well as a fuel-efficient 5,500 nautical mile range. MY AURORA was designed and engineered with safety as a priority. She features a full-displacement, fiberglass hull, deep draft and bulbous bow to ensure the yacht is a safe global traveler. The yacht also features watertight bulkheads that meet or exceed ABS requirements for +A-1 Yachting.

Explorer yacht MY AURORA has two interior helm stations as well as three-wing stations. This Nordhavn 120 also features a two-tiered engine room that allows for complete access to maintain and repair all the yacht’s systems. A full tunnel runs from the engine room on the tank deck all the way to the bow thruster room. The yacht had her 5-year ABS classification survey completed in 2018. She is has been meticulously maintained and in immaculate condition.

Built for a purpose: Inside the Nordhavn 120 Aurora

Since being sold to her current owners in February 2017, the 36.75 metre Nordhavn  Aurora has clocked up 19,900 nautical miles in her predominant cruising grounds of Mexico and the west and east coasts of the US. This, her captain Jake Roush estimates, is roughly the equivalent of three quarters around the world, and a testament to the range and comfort of the Nordhavn 120 .

The most memorable places Aurora has visited include the Sea of Cortez, or “the world’s aquarium,” Roush says, quoting the famous words of Jacques Cousteau. He recalls “the untouched richness of the reefs” and “astounding diversity in crystal clear waters”. Other gems have included small towns and anchorages in the Pacific North West, from Puget Sound to the San Juan Islands, and Roush hasn’t forgotten the “remote beauty of the blue Alaska glaciers.”

All of these adventures are thanks to the comfort, stability and range of Aurora , he says. “Undoubtedly our Nordhavn 120 has just begun to make her mark on the world and will continue her expeditions as far as the owner’s imagination will take her.”

It was Roush himself who was tasked with the job of finding Aurora when the time came to replace the incumbent Westport 112. Preferring to travel in company, the owner realised that “the 112 was not as much boat as he needed to make everyone comfortable,” Roush says. He tasked Roush with finding a replacement, but with a number of conditions. Interior space was key, he told him. A sky lounge, saloon, 10-person dining table, master cabin and at least two king guest cabins were key requirements.

While generous interior space was key, the owner did not want this to greatly increase the yacht's overall length, resulting in “an exorbitant amount of crew”, more operational expense and limited dockage availability. But when Roush first came across the Nordhavn 120 in autumn 2016 he realised he had found the answer. “From the first virtual walkthrough, I began to realise that this boat was a 50 metre in a 32 metre package,” he says.

Alongside the interior comfort designed by Destry Darr Interiors, seakeeping stability and a generous range necessary to fulfil the owners’ ambitious expeditions, Roush highlights Nordhavn’s ability to build fit-for-purpose yachts. “Nordhavn is a one-of-a-kind builder which engineers boats for the travel and comfort of its guests aboard,” he says. “Everywhere this boat goes, people stop and notice - not because it's like others but because it's built for a purpose.”
