Yacht Club “Capt. G. Georgiev – Port Varna”

Yacht Club “Capt. G. Georgiev – Port Varna ” has 43 years of history and is a non-government organisation focusing on educating and developing kids’ and youth sailing, training young people while they spend more time among nature.

The main goals of the club are:

• development of sea sports and tourism with sailing yachts and other boats;
• organizing sea adventures of its members and supporting them to handle their proper marine education;
• protecting the environment;
• organizing and taking part in regattas and other sea events; education andtraining of children and youths;
• establishment of partnership with similar organizations worldwide;
• working for social integration and personal improvement.   

The club consist of 123 members and has employed 3 coaches since 2016 that secure the proper education and training of the young sailors. The club is managed by a Board of 5 people with skills and knowledge both in sailing and in management. All of them are volunteers. The club is a member of the Bulgarian Sailing Federation. We have  34 qualified national Judges and Race Officers.

Our club and its members has organized and hosted more than 200 sailing regattas and became an important starting point for many nautical achievements with club’s sailors in the newest Bulgarian sailing history such as: the first single-handed Bulgarian round-the-world marine trip (conducted by Capt. G.Georgiev – a leading member of our club), the first Bulgarian Black sea yacht crossing, the first International regatta for keel boats sailingin 1976 which is present in the national regatta calendar nowadays, too. Furthermore members of our club won many medals from world renowned trans-Atlantic regattas.  We hosted: The World championship “Master Cup 2008”, class 470; European Championship 2009, class Finn; Tall Ships Regatta “Historical Seas 2010” and Tall Ships Regatta “SCF Black Sea2014”. Most of the events and regattas are organized with the kind support and help of the club’s members. We are proud than many of the members are qualified judges with a certificate from the National Judge Committee.

Currents and Tides

"Normal tidal fluctuation at the Port of Varna is negligible; the change from low to high is only about 2 in (5 cm). Local harbor authorities state that during winter, however, changes of as much as 3.3 ft (1 m) may occur 3 to 5 times per year. It is not known if the authorities were referring to seiches or extreme tidal fluctuations. The Black Sea Pilot states that seiches, which occur with little or no warning, can raise or lower the sea level by as much as 3.3 ft (1 m) over wide areas of the Black Sea. These changes may be the result of prolonged easterly or westerly.

The Black Sea Pilot states that currents in the Black Sea, which in general are weak and inconstant, consist of the main circulation setting counter-clockwise along its shores. Countercurrents occur between the main current and the shore in many places, including Varna. The strength and constancy of the counter-clockwise circulation is greatest after the melting of snow in late spring and early summer when the discharge from rivers is greatest. In late summer and autumn, when the volume of water discharged by the rivers is relatively small, the circulation is generally weaker and more subject to wind-driven current variations."

The approach to Varna is straightforward. The large outer breakwater (E) has a large light tower on it S end. Cranes can be seen in the background.

Hail Port Control on VHF channel 16 when you are about 1 nM from the port.

Leave the large outer breakwater to starboard and enter the yacht club. If the Club is full continue further into the harbour to the passenger terminal.

The authorities will come to the boat and the paperwork will be completed onboard. No one should disembark before you are cleared in.

Before your departure inform Port Control .

Berth at the Varna Yacht Club, if it is full, continue further into the harbour to the passenger terminal and moor alongside to the S of the terminal.

Approach LZ yachting for a possible berth, they usually have space. they are rather more expensive than the yacht club though, about 20 Euro a day for a 9m yacht.

The club has floating pontoons with water and electricity. It also has showers and WCs. It welcomes visitors, particularly at the beginning of July when it holds its annual regatta from Varna to Kavarna . A yacht can safely be left here if travelling inland. It provides excellent all-round shelter.

• LZ yachting can keep your boat ashore over winter fairly cheaply. The good wind conditions have assisted the hosts from Yacht Club "Capt. G.Georgiew" to organise a thrilling competition for everyone. 

The crew of UK Sailmakers helmed by Mihail Kopanov have seized the victory in "Conrad" class with two 1st and two 2nd places which have guaranteed advantage of 5 points ahead of  "Quantum Racing" helmed by Pavel Dukov finishing with 11 points. The bronze has been captured by Boyan Kostov and "METCH"

Sundowner prevails on Varna Chanel Cup 2017!

Sundowner with skipper Damyan Petkov and crew; MarietaZaykova, Todor Velev, Doichin Mihailov, Atanas Ivanov, have won the annual regatta "Varna Chanel Cup" 2017, which has been held between 1st - 4th June 2017 

A total of 9 races has been conducted for the 3 racing days with one discard allowed. 

In class "Conrad", the sailors from Yacht Club "Port Bourgas", topped the standings leading to the second Ivan Kostadinov with "Impala" and Bogomil Pehlivanov with "Phoenix"
