Wally Yachts WHY200

Wally Yachts wants to give you your space.

The Monegasque yard has crowned its latest design the WHY200 and claims it’s a cool new “space” ship in more ways than one. The compact vessel spans 88 feet 9 inches and weighs just 200 gross tons yet the shipyard claims it will offer all the interior space of a superyacht , along with the speed of a semi-displacement yacht.

WHY200 was designed by Wally’s founder Luca Bassani in partnership with the Ferretti Group ’s in-house engineering department. It features naval architecture by Laurent Giles NA and interior design by A. Vallicelli & C Studio . Together, this team has created a multipurpose vessel with an innovative full-wide-body design.

“Through the WHY200, we are challenging preconceived notions of what a yacht should be and how it can be used,” Wally’s managing director Stefano de Vivo said in a press release. “It is a platform that can be enjoyed by the whole family or groups of friends, without compromise.”

Indeed, the WHY200 features more than 2,153 square feet of indoor living space. At its heart is an expansive full-beam main salon, which Wally claims is 50 percent larger than those found in comparable vessels. To achieve this feat, the team took the areas typically reserved for exterior walkways and incorporated them into the sizable 656-square-foot salon.

From here, a central carbon-fiber staircase links to the upper deck’s striking glass-encased sky lounge and the lower deck’s luxe accommodation. The vessel can fit three or four double guest cabins depending on the layout selected. Of course, it’s the owner’s suite at the bow which brings the wow factor with 398 square feet of space and vast wraparound glass windows that offer uninterrupted views.

Elsewhere, there’s a galley and crew area that comprises more than 344 square feet. An informal show kitchen can also be fitted as an optional extra if you’re a cooking enthusiast.

For those who enjoy outdoor living, the WHY200 offers another 1,550 square feet of exterior deck space designed for al fresco dining and open-air lounging. The main deck aft is flanked by glass panels to provide shelter while affording views of the water. The upper deck aft, meanwhile, offers ample space to recline on sun loungers.

The expandable beach club is another standout feature with fold-out wings that offer 344 square feet of space and direct access to the sea on three sides. Thanks to two concealed garages, seafarers will also have access to a 13-foot tender and several water toys.

The WHY200 is Wally’s first hybrid yacht and features an adaptive Volvo multi-propulsion system that can hit an impressive 20 knots in hyper displacement mode or tackle greater distances more economically in long-range displacement mode. It is also fitted with both fin and gyroscopic stabilizers to keep it steady at sea.

The WHY200 will debut at the Ferretti Group Private Preview in Monaco this September. Stay tuned.

7 Wally Innovations That Changed Sailing History

wally

Since Luca Bassani founded the brand in 1994, Wally has pioneered groundbreaking solutions that have transformed technologies and aesthetics to the extent that today it is hard to identify any aspect of large yacht design that has not been influenced by his creative vision . We’ve put together a round up of seven innovations that have since been absorbed into mainstream yachting.

1. Carbon fibre

Wally Nariida

Everything from bicycle frames to champagne bottles is made of carbon fibre nowadays, but that was not the case in 1991 when Bassani launched his own 25m  sloop  Wallygator (now  Wally One ). Her  carbon composite hull and full carbon mast were complete novelties in boating at the time and were inspired by the New Zealand challenger KZ-1, the first big yacht with a full carbon mast, in the 1988 America’s Cup.

In 1994,  Wallygator II (now  Nariida ) even had carbon fibre  sails long before 3DL arrived on the scene. Since then, Wally has been at the forefront of developments in carbon composite construction and when 50.5m  Better Place was launched in 2012 she was the largest carbon fibre sloop in the world.

2. Lifting keel

1994. Wally Nariida_Photo Guido Grugnola.

When the Wally 77  Carrera (now  Lyra ) was launched in 2000, she was the first cruising yacht to have a  hydraulic lifting keel with bulb (as opposed to a daggerboard or swing keel) for better performance under sail and easier access to shallow bays. Again, the engineering systems have been continuously upgraded and improved. Wally’s first  canting keel appeared on  Tiketitan in 1998, unheard of for anything expect ocean racers at the time.

3. Submarine anchor

wally yacht concept

Luca Bassani first introduced a ‘bomb bay’ anchor systemaboard   Wallygator II . The underwater mechanism provided better weight distribution as the anchor and chain locker is moved aft instead of in the bow, reducing pitching under sail. The system was further developed and fine-tuned over the years and is now a standard feature on Wally sailing yachts.

4. Easy sailing

Wallygator was both the catalyst and prototype for many developments that are now commonplace. These included  simplifying the sailing systems with a self-tacking jib, swept-back spreaders and no running backstays. Wally took the easy sailing concept a step further with a  push-button system for trimming the sails on  Wallygator II , and again in 1998 with  Tiketitan and  Slingshot (now  Itaca ), which were the first yachts equipped with  Magic Trim .

The fully automatic sail trimming system developed in collaboration with Cariboni effectively meant that even the largest yachts could be handled single-handed. Wally has continuously improved and refined the automation technology, so that on the WallyCento  Tango , for example, the jib can be furled/unfurled in just 8 seconds.

5. Beach Club

1998 Tiketitan terrace-on-the-sea. Photo Guy Gurney

A beach club or terraced main deck aft that brings guests into closer contact with the sea are must-have feature on modern superyachts. In fact, the  terrace-on-the-sea concept was devised by Luca Bassani and first introduced aboard  Tiketitan , which had a main salon below deck overlooking the open transom. The layout offered unique access to the sea and was applied to other Wally sailing yachts from 24-50m.

6. On-Deck Living

1991 Wallygator cockpit. Photo Carlo Borlenghi

Closely allied to the inside-outside concept is the  deck and cockpit layout . Wally was a pioneer in completely separating the guest cockpit from the manoeuvring and operations areas for reasons of safety, efficiency and enjoyment. This philosophy reached a pinnacle of purity with  Esense in 2006, where the  raised bulwarks became an integral part of the hull structure and provided longitudinal rigidity to the huge open expanse of flushdeck .

The mirrored glass salon aboard  Tiketitan ushered in another innovation that has since become commonplace: the extensive use of structural glass. The first  strip skylight integrated into the length of the deckhouse on a sailing yacht appeared in 2003 on the Wally 80, and Better Place was the first megasailer to have full-height superstructure windows.

Wally why 200 motor yacht

On board the spaceship-style wallywhy200 superyacht from Wally

Related articles, superyacht directory.

The Wally wallywhy200 created waves with its unusual lines. Clare Mahon overcomes her initial concerns about its quirky appearance with a little help from designer Luca Bassani

You’ve got to love that person who just comes right out and says it – and Luca Bassani, the founder and chief designer of Wally , is that kind of guy. “ Non mi piacciono le curve ,” I don’t like curves. It’s his simple answer to my question as to why the exterior lines of the new wallywhy200 are very much the opposite of curvaceous.

It’s said with a smile and a chuckle and is as simple as that: if Bassani had wanted curvier he would have gone curvier, but that’s not his thing. And so far, doing and designing things his way has stood him in good stead: just as Wally sailing yachts shook up the world of superyachts, Wallypower boats and Wallytenders have also left their mark. Their looks may call to mind something that splashed down from outer space in the dark of night more than something that headed out from port one morning, but that’s just what you get when you don’t like curves.

What Bassani does like is living well and spending time on the water – preferably moving fast on a boat that is innovative, functional and efficient. While their aesthetic impact is significant, comfort and performance have always been part of the equation. In fact, Bassani has always said that, for him, function comes well before form. That hasn’t kept Wally yachts from winning several of Italy’s prestigious Compasso d’Oro design awards.

The wallywhy200 has naval architecture by Laurent Giles and its interior is by A Vallicelli & C Yacht Design . The engineering department at the Ferretti Group, the company that now owns Wally, also contributed and as the brand’s chief designer Luca Bassani had the first ideas for the project and the final word on its looks. The result is an 89ft, sub-200-gross-tonne semi-displacement yacht that still looks Wally despite having a 15ft-high freeboard and a beam so ample that it broadens the meaning of wide body. The straight bow flares back slightly and the yacht’s hull lines are broken up by a continuous strip of glass at main deck height and a black jag along the lower deck. The superstructure is classic Wally: angular to the point of looking slightly dangerous.

Boarding from the aft beach platform, you pick up on the WHY200’s vocation for fun and hospitality. Teak benches, sunpads and a wide central staircase are all perfect for easy access to the water or a proper welcome to a party. Deck and saloon are on the same level and there’s space, space, space. Bassani jokingly refers to that aft deck as the dance floor. Everything is catty-corners, sunpads to tables to staircases to benches. And there’s not a curve in sight – unless you count the teak covering the symmetrical side garages, which bends the planks of wood like a Thonet chair.

Stefano de Vivo, Wally’s managing director and chief commercial officer of the Ferretti Group, knows that the wallywhy200 is an eyeful but he also knows that Wally has always been a step ahead. “Bassani sees it straight away, but even at the shipyard it took the rest of us a while to understand it,” he says of the yacht’s design. “We’re not expecting anyone to say that they love the exterior look but like all Wally yachts it will take time and it will grow on you. The exterior is just a consequence of the quest for interior volume and the volume-to-length ratio will create a new market segment because it allows for a new way of using the yacht,” he says.

The yacht’s name is a kind of cypher where the W is for Wally, the HY is for hybrid and 200 stands for the yacht’s gross tonnage. But hybrid here does not refer to the yacht’s propulsion system; it stands for the hybrid uses you can get from the yacht. “It’s a real crossover,” Bassani says. “It’s more than just a semi-displacement yacht, it’s a semi explorer and a semi fly. And its living spaces are like a semi loft.”

Entering the saloon, you do get that wow effect that comes with large and light lofts. The openness of space is spectacular, with just a carbon-fibre spiral staircase enclosed by glass at the centre and a continuous ribbon of windows letting the views inside. With six main deck layout options to choose from, the full-beam space – devoid of bulkheads – can be fitted out as you prefer, with a show kitchen and dining area, for example, or just as a living area.

There’s plenty of space, but length was not the driver for this project, the beam was. “We have found that for today’s owners, beam is worth more than length,” de Vivo says. “This yacht’s seven-metre [23ft] net beam is wider than any other yacht in its size range and gives you the volume you normally have on a 50-metre [164ft] yacht. The wallywhy200 is the beginning of a range that Luca has inspired; there will be more yachts, both smaller and larger than the 200, where the concept will remain the volume.”

But volume was not the starting point. “As always with Wally, we began by thinking about the hull. Semi displacement is very difficult in terms of riding through the water; it’s as if you’re always on the hump of a wave,” Bassani says. “So with Laurent Giles and the technical office at Ferretti we developed a hull shape that we’re very happy with. We have 1.5 degrees of trim instead of the usual three to five, so it’s more comfortable – you’re not on the incline of a mountain. Being wide, it also has a lot of space and stability.  But if we have a hull that’s good through the waves  we can go faster, say at 15 to 20 knots, and still stay comfortable.” He has a twinkle in his eyes as he mentions speed. “That brings a different set of problems because if you don’t have a high bow you’ll get a green wave of water coming over the boat. So we raised the bow and then we found we had created a new volume, a new space and we thought: why not have the master cabin there? It’s a really nice spot. The boat is very stable and there isn’t a lot of pitch, so sleeping fore is feasible.”

“He makes it all sound easy,” de Vivo says with a laugh as Bassani explains the concept.

“There are three points where you can do something better on a boat: the stern, the bow and the upper deck,” Bassani continues. “On the WHY200 we tried to exploit these areas as much as possible. The stern is very open, big and spacious with a transformer platform and fold-down bulwarks that also give access to the garages; the bow has the master cabin and the fly has the wheelhouse and another open space aft.”

Although it is the designer’s choice, the forward owner’s cabin is an option – the Wally WHY200 is also offered with a dining space forward, framed by windows. When the space is used as the owner’s cabin, the scenery visible from the centrally placed bed is limitless. Other configuration options include the choice of three or four en suite guest cabins on the lower deck. These also get all the light and views you could ask for, but the real fun is to be had on the upper deck, where the wheelhouse is located.

That’s the most Wally part of the boat. The glass and carbon top is distinctively angular, but there will be curves all around – in the form of smiles – as soon as you step up to the controls. The wallywhy200 runs on four Volvo Penta D13-IPS1350 engines, the most powerful package in the IPS range and specifically designed for semi-displacement yachts. This compact engine and pod package can be mounted farther aft than a conventional shaft drive. Aboard the wallywhy200 they’re mounted under the aft deck, optimising weight distribution and leaving space for cabins for five crew, a proper galley and a crew mess on the lower deck.

And when it’s time to move you’ll be tempted to tell the crew to just stay below. The joystick controls live up to their name; the yacht is quick, manoeuvrable and stable. Simrad touchscreens display info on all the running systems and run she does: the engines can deliver up to 1,000 horsepower each and you can nudge the boat up to her 23-knot top speed without noticing it.

Enough has been said about Volvo Penta IPS fuel efficiency, silence and lack of vibration. Or has it? With the WHY200’s engines in a sound-insulated space under the aft deck you can feel the silence and enjoy the roar of the wind more than that of your engines.  In the owner’s and guest cabins engine noise is barely audible. You can motor along at 15 knots enjoying this hull’s stability and zero- to one-degree pitch or cruise at 10 knots using two engines to reduce wear and tear and burn less than 26 gallons of fuel per hour. Since the bow slices through the water there’s no slamming. Speeding along is serious business but feels like child’s play.

Bassani’s angles are starting to fit together like a puzzle for me and when we cut the engines and open the boat’s side terraces to create our own private beach, I realise there’s more at play than volume and space aboard the WHY200.

I confess to Bassani that I had boarded ready to dislike the boat because it looks so….

“Bulky?” Bassani suggests, sparing me from having to find the word to describe what had looked like a combination of hard-edged and bloated when viewed from the dock. “Angles are cleaner,” Bassani says with a chuckle. “And triangles are beautiful.”

And he’s right, different angles on things are what make this smaller yacht so large. The wallywhy200 is not fat, it’s phat.

Work is proceeding at a fast pace and on schedule to complete WHY200, the first full-wide-body by Wally, which will make its official debut at Cannes Yachting Festival in September

Monaco, 7 July 2021 – Yet again Wally has pushed forward the boundaries of possibility creating a yacht that has never been seen before in the history of yachting. The first unit of the new WHY range, which will be launched in the first half of July, is going to leave an indelible mark on the world of yacht design.

The innovative motor yacht combining the comfort and space of a larger displacement yacht with the speed and performance of a semi-displacement, was developed by Wally design team led by Luca Bassani, jointly with the Ferretti Group Engineering Department, working with Laurent Giles NA Ltd for naval architecture and Studio A. Vallicelli & C for interior design.

“We are very proud of WHY200, a yacht that was a bit of a gamble but that today rewards us with a result that exceeds our wildest expectations,” says Stefano de Vivo, Wally Managing Director. “With its widebody design, this 200 GT yacht offers far larger volumes compared to traditional motorboats, plus a living space and stability that are definitely greater than any competitor’s. It essentially provides all the advantages of a catamaran but has none of the limitations, namely the lack of volume linked to the main central hull and mooring problems. This innovative yacht in terms of performance and stability was born from the brilliant vision of Wally, from the considerable experience in building hulls of the Ferretti Group, which has been designing its hulls ‘in-house’ for over 20 years, and from the collaboration with Laurent Giles Naval Architects. WHY200 is a yacht that will stand out on the international scene both for the essential design that distinguishes Wally yachts, and for its innovative concept, which can offer a different sailing experience to the owner. It is the ideal yacht to freely and safely regain possession of one’s space with family and friends.”

“Like all Wallys, which for 25 years have been ahead of their time and the setters of new standards in yachting design, the new compact superyacht WHY200 carries the ‘Wow’ factor engraved in its DNA,” comments Luca Bassani, Wally Founder and Chief Designer. “The new WHY200 expresses all its innovative power through new architectural elements, which represent a break with the past and with the typical clichés of a motor yacht. Ferretti Group made it possible to realise a concept that had been close to my heart for some time, believing in the success of a bold design that will improve the owner’s experience on board and represent a turning point in the motor yacht market.”

WHY200

Wow-bow: Wally’s stylistic masterpiece that reframes the design rules  In keeping with a design philosophy that aims, on the one hand, to combine form and function through distinctive and highly recognizable aesthetic and, on the other, to guarantee a new and immersive yachting experience with the element of water, WHY200 features a spectacular 4.7-metre-high glazed bow housing a stunning 37 m2 master suite overlooking the sea, with an uninterrupted 270-degree view of the horizon. This cabin stands out also for its exceptional noise levels thanks to the positioning of the engine room which is located at the opposite end of the boat. The eye-catching upper deck has a futuristic glass and carbon dome, a distinctive Wally feature that is reminiscent of the clean, angular look of the legendary Wallypower. Also on the upper deck, the extended, structural top with no supporting pillars is a masterpiece of design and engineering for its exceptional stability and strength.

The essential elegance of the interior The first unit, displaying an exclusive “Wally Silver” colour, will feature a four-cabin layout: the master cabin with two separate bathrooms on the main deck, a VIP and two guest cabins on the lower deck. An absolute novelty is the spectacular one-piece laminated carbon staircase which, as well as having a load-bearing function, is an extremely light element connecting the three decks and making the bulkheads superfluous in the huge 61 m2 open space living area, enhanced by a practical show-cooking kitchen. Open-pore teak was chosen for the furniture. The walkways of the two living halls and the lower deck corridor are also teak. The restful and natural colour palette of neutral and sandy tones creates a refined and timeless effect.

On-demand infotainment at your fingertips   Thanks to the 5G wireless network connection with home automation control, guests will be able to comfortably manage all the audio/video systems via mobile devices, both outside and inside the yacht. Through Naviop’s integrated system, they will also be able to check navigation data, keeping the yacht’s progress and parameters constantly under control. The first unit will feature a state-of-the-art 55 inch TV in the upper living room and a 5.1 Premium sound system on the main and upper decks, while a sophisticated Sonance sound system will serve the outdoor areas.

Beach Club: a huge living room on the water  Experiencing the sea means also enjoying activities in direct contact with the water. The WHY200 is unsurpassed in this respect too: the folding beach club bulwarks, for example, not only allow access to the sea on three sides (according to a radically innovative concept), but also expand the living area to 32 m2, transforming it into a true terrace over the water, with size and features that make all competitors, even larger ones, pale in comparison. In addition, WHY200 boasts two garages with a storage capacity never seen before on yachts of this size, capable of accommodating a 4.05m jet tender, wave runner, seabob, paddleboard and all manner of water toys.

Speed rhymes with stability Its trail-blazing and highly performing hull tested in naval tank and, as all Wally hulls, capable of cutting the waves without hitting and thus minimizing the pitching, in the first unit is powered by four Volvo Penta D-13 IPS 1350 engines 1000 hp each. Thanks to these groundbreaking features, WHY200 can cruise at any speed (23 knots top speed), maintaining a horizontal position without reducing the guests’ comfort on board, which is unique among fast semi-displacement yachts. Its width combined with the fin stabilisers – as a standard feature – that can be activated when at anchor or while cruising, and with two Seakeepers, ensures greater stability compared to conventional hulls.

Wally’s New Concept: 165 Wallypower by Espen Øino and Luca Bassani

Wally’s New Concept: 165 Wallypower by Espen Øino and Luca Bassani

For the first time, Espen Øino and Luca Bassani have creatively come together to design a fast open superyacht that will change the way the world sees Mediterranean cruiser yachts forever. The 165 Wallypower is unmistakably a thoroughbred from the Wally stable, displaying performance and efficiency, an affinity with the sea and a piercing bow to effortlessly cut through waves.

Inspired by the radical look of the 118 Wallypower, one of Wally’s first breakaway power boat creations, Øino took the essence of Bassani’s vision and transmuted it into this completely new category for the brand. The result is a Mediterranean cruiser that is fast, effortlessly cool and unapologetically contemporary.

The 165 Wallypower is the first power superyacht concept to be released by Wally since it became a part of Ferretti Group this year, and its innovative nature is testament to why the two major yachting brands are so well aligned.

The essence of any Wally is its innovation and power to surprise. As a category that has seen a lack of modernisation over the decades, the fast open yacht market was ripe for an overhaul. Owners wanting a modern, medium-range Mediterranean cruising yacht to take them quickly and comfortably between glamorous destinations need look no further.

Wally’s New Concept: 165 Wallypower by Espen Øino and Luca Bassani

Øino’s 165 Wallypower concept incorporates features that are distinctively “Wally”, and previously unseen on Mediterranean cruisers: uncluttered lines and open decks with a sharp, angular look; a large interior volume made possible through smart naval architecture and design; a sprawling outdoor space with natural flow to the interior for an “indoor-outdoor” lifestyle; and a sense of always being close to the water.

The 50-metre superyacht has a tonnage under 500GRT, yet offers a superior feeling of space and many elements typically expected on a larger vessel. The 165 Wallypower’s standout features are plentiful, in particular the owner’s stateroom location on the main deck, providing privacy and space not usually afforded to owners of yachts this length. A further four ensuite guest cabins are found on the lower deck, alongside the crew and service area towards the bow.

Amidships on the main deck is a large saloon and dining area with double fold-down balconies, leading seamlessly to an outdoor dining space and swimming pool flanked by large sunpads. Port and starboard staircases take guests to the water’s edge with a beach club featuring U-shaped seating and large, fold-down bulwarks to extend the deck beyond the sides of the hull.

Wally’s New Concept: 165 Wallypower by Espen Øino and Luca Bassani

Typical of Wally’s signature look, railings and deck equipment are kept to a minimum, giving a sense of space and serenity. Glass replaces solid exterior bulwarks where possible, to maximise the feeling of closeness to the water, and tenders are stored in a concealed garage beneath the foredeck, which is uncluttered and vast.

The sundeck extends a full 15 metres, unheard of on a yacht of this size and type. At the top of the staircase from the glass-encased bridge, a large raised settee offers an excellent vantage point for owners and guests while underway, and a central U-shaped bar is fully protected from the elements by a large hardtop and high glass bulwarks. A wide sunpad to the aft of the sundeck commands near-panoramic views of the water for the perfect relaxation spot.

The 165 Wallypower delivers the assured seakeeping that one would expect of a Wally yacht. Slamming is the bane of many an owner’s life when it comes to fast open yachts but, thanks to the exceptional naval architecture expertise put to use in the superior hullform of the 165 Wallypower, it pierces the water effortlessly without a bump or roll.

Try a game of word association with any superyacht industry professional and I’d be surprised if the word innovation didn’t bring the response Wally. Since 1994, Wally Yachts has – initially in sail and then in power – brought to the market a series of game changing initiatives. It’s often true that innovative companies (think Apple or Dyson) are driven by a singular mind, a powerful creative force and vision. In the case of Wally, Luca Bassani is that man.

“I had the freedom and the possibility, the financial possibility to realise my ideas,” he told me. “When you just have the ideas, but you never have the chance to realise the ideas because you have to find the finance to do the prototype and then the product… it becomes very difficult. I had this big, big chance to be able to finance my ideas, my innovations. That freedom was extremely important, because it put us at a completely different level from any competitor.”

Luca Bassani was born to a successful Milanese business family, and his early career followed a conventional roadmap. He was educated in Milan, attending Bocconi University where he earned a PhD in Economics. He then went to London for a year, to work at the St James’s office of McKinsey & Company before returning to Italy to join the family firm, BTicino, a manufacturer of residential and industry electrical equipment, where Bassani was CFO.

The family sold up in 1989, and Bassani could then give more attention to his life’s real passion – and his path started to diverge from the expected. “Sailing has been my passion since I was very, very young because we were spending a lot of time in Portofino during the summer, where we had a house… I learnt everything about the sea. How to fish, how to sail, how to paddle, everything.”

Sailing roots

“My family always had a power boat and a sail boat, and when I was 12, the captain of the sail boat told me, ‘Hey, why don’t we spend more time aboard, because we are only using the boat during the weekend when your father is here?’

“I said, ‘Okay, let’s go.’ We sailed 5,000 miles during that summer and the big passion started – from there I’ve been sailing, sailing, sailing.”

1. Aquarius The brief for Aquarius included that she should be, ‘an elegant, muscular sailing yacht with a classic profile…

The boat was an S&S 37-footer skippered by Tito Prato, and they would sail her from early in the morning to late in the evening. Soon the attention turned to racing . There were several of the top Italian boats in Portofino at the time and in 1971, when Bassani was 15, the S&S 37 was changed for a Swan 43.

“We started to race – I’m going to say seriously – but seriously for that time. Nothing to compare to what seriously means today. So, we started to build up a crew and were doing all the races in Italy, between Italy and France.”

They won the Two Ton Cup in 1972, and an Ericson 46 followed in 1973 and then in 1975 a C&C 66 called Phantom . “At that time, it was considered the first maxi,” said Bassani. “We raced two or three years with that boat. Then we went to the International 6-metre class and we had a long career and five different boats.” Bassani raced for almost 15 years in 6-metres, winning two European Championships (1986 and 1990) and placing third at the 1983 World Championships.

yacht-designer-luca-bassani-mastview-shot-credit-Guillaume-Plisson

During this time Bassani also raced a Laser, introduced the J/24 to Italy, and then moved into the Mumm 30 when it arrived on the scene in the mid-nineties. He won the world championships at Hilton Head in 1998 and was 2nd at the Europeans the same year. It’s a long racing pedigree and, unsurprisingly, when he came to build a cruising boat for his family, he looked for speed and efficiency.

The first Wally emerges

It was the tail end of the 1980s and the International Offshore Rule (IOR) still held sway over the world’s racing fleets. “Racing boats were absolutely uncomfortable. Also, [they were] not very fast, because the handicap system was producing slow boats. At the same time, cruising boats were just following this formula. They were racing boats just transformed into cruising boats and they were again, not so comfortable… and slow.

“I knew that… there were already technologies and materials that could have made the boats much faster, much easier. That’s why I decided to choose a naval architect to design and build the boat that I had in my mind. It was the first Wallygator [named after the cartoon character], the 83-footer, designed with Luca Brenta and built by Sangermani… That was the mother of all the Wally’s, actually.

“I built that boat only for myself and my family. I didn’t have the idea of starting a company, but I really wanted a boat that could be fast and comfortable, and easy to manage. Once I launched the boat in 1991, I used it for a couple of years and I was very, very happy with it; everything was beyond my expectations, in terms of reliability, in terms of performances and easiness to use.

“I said, ‘Oh, why is nobody trying to copy this boat?’ Something that I wouldn’t say today… at that point we had sold the family company, so I had more time, more finances available, and I said, ‘OK, why not start a small business around this idea?’”

The first Wallygator was sold in 1993 to an Italian owner, becoming Mr Gecko. Luca Bassani then built another two boats to his own specification to get things moving. Wallygator II (now Nariida ) a 105ft ketch that was launched in 1994 and was sold in 1997 to a Norwegian owner. It was this boat that introduced the hydraulics-led push-button handling that enable the sweeping, open and uncluttered decks that have become synonymous with Wally design.

Bassani describes the 32m Wallygator II (now Nariida ) as “the first big sailing yacht with a modern racing hull, changing the look with a plumb bow, a very beamy hull and stern, a very flush deck and carbon fibre construction and sails”. Photo: Guy Gurney

In 1995 the ketch was followed by Genie of the Lamp , a 79-footer also sold in 1997, this time to a Swiss owner. “Between these two boats,” said Bassani, “I finally convinced the market that that was the way to go.”

The proof of that was really the first person to commission a Wally: former Chairman and CEO of L’Oreal, Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones. He saw a photo of Genie of the Lamp and knew almost instantly that it was what he wanted.

Bassani explained how Owen-Jones asked if he could test the yacht and how he then lent it to him for a week’s cruising. “He came back saying he wanted to buy the boat. I convinced him to build a sister ship, which was the first Magic Carpet .” Owen-Jones is now on his third Wally, Magic Carpet3 .

“The first new generation yacht, [ Magic Carpet 3 ] brings very high performances, but also a lot of comfort for cruising,” says Bassani. Photo: Nico Martinez

It’s an ambition that has always found its expression in the boats, through the wide range of designers and shipyards that have been involved in the Wally yachts.

“I think, let me say, sorry, but we influenced them,” said Bassani, of the designers he has worked with – a list that includes Luca Brenta, German Frers , Bill Tripp and Reichel Pugh.

Function before form

“What is today recognised as Wally design style was a result of the systems that I wanted to build for our boats… always to be faster, to be more comfortable, to be easier to manoeuvre, easier to maintain, and the aesthetic was a result, it was not a target.

“It’s what they call the fault of function… I just applied my personal style when I was deciding that I liked that line or the other line, this kind of finish or a different finish… but it was not a target for me to do something stylish. I wanted beauty – for my eyes – but mainly very functional.”

Luca Bassani can identify three core features of the boats that have driven much of the design. The first is the sail plan. In the dying days of the IOR when the first Wallygator was designed, a big overlapping headsail and a small mainsail was the norm. “We abandoned the big, overlapping genoa because we wanted to have self-tacking and we wanted the boat to be fast.”

yacht-designer-luca-bassani-Wally-Class-Maxi-Yacht-Rolex-Cup-credit-Carlo-Borlenghi

The serious racing side of Wally – a big fleet start at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2017. Photo: Carlo Borlenghi

That concept at that size required a carbon fibre mast. It was the only way to make a mast that would stay up without runners and an inner forestay. “If you have an inner stay, you cannot have a self-tacking [headsail],” said Bassani. The carbon fibre mast was inspired by the Kiwi big boat [KZ-1] that was built for the 1988 America’s Cup . Laurent Esquier sailed with Bassani in the 6-metre, was with the Kiwi Cup team and told him about the impressive new material.

The second and third features were the hull, and the appendages. “We wanted the boat to be wider, to be much faster reaching, but with the right appendages to have good performance… so they surf easily, but they are still very, very fast upwind. This was made possible by all the new materials, the composites, carbon fibre and titanium.” And it’s really the materials that have enabled the innovation in all these three areas and driven the journey that Wally has been on for the last 25 years.

“Innovation is based mainly on the new materials. The computer, cars, aeroplanes; it’s just the materials that have allowed the big steps forward. I come from an industry where technology and engineering are fundamental; the electrical industry, and also from the entrepreneurial philosophy of my father, who always said that the product is the company… I mean, you cannot make a product by a brand, but you can make a brand by a product. The product, in this case, is based on engineering and materials.”

An innovative future

Twenty-five years ago Bassani had to rely on himself and his team to find the materials that could drive the next innovation. “Today, there is a huge movement of people that are inventing, that are proposing new ideas and new materials. We have a position, an image in the world, and everybody looks at us as real innovators. So, we receive, practically every week, some new ideas and, at the end, we find some that are very, very interesting. So, not only do we have our own team, but we have the world helping us.

“Today, there are so many new ideas in naval architecture… they will allow it to be more sustainable, to be more comfortable, but you have to be brave enough to follow this path, otherwise you remain as everybody is now… There are innovations that will be applied both on the big displacement yachts, or in the medium semi-displacement, and in the planing yachts. In sailing, you see from the America’s Cup that there are extremely interesting new ideas about the sail plan. In a few years we will see yachts that are very, very different from today.”

I talked to Luca Bassani during the Düsseldorf boat show , not long after the announcement of the sale of Wally to Ferretti. Bassani was clear about his motives.

yacht-designer-luca-bassani-office-credit-Toni-Meneguzzo

Photo: Toni Meneguzzo

“I realised that I didn’t have any more of the energy, the finances that the size of the market today needs, and I realised that was the moment to have a big partner. Alone, I was no longer strong enough to go on with the development of the company.

“I found, in the Ferretti group, the right mentality. A very young group of managers, very motivated, who were loving what we did. They love Wally, and they are very confident that together we could do a lot of things. So, I think this is the next step that Wally deserved to go on.

“I will be doing what I love to do. Inventing and designing, and promoting the development, promoting the innovation.”

And, let’s hope, doing it for another 25 years.

Luca Bassani on his milestone designs

“The sailing yacht would be Genie of the Lamp . On the power boat I would take the 118 Wallypower. They both looked very crazy when they were launched but, after many years, you can recognise they radically changed the industry.”

Luca Bassani Biography

Born: 24th November 1956

Nationality: Italian

Education:  1980, graduated in business/economics from Bocconi University, Milan, Italy; 2004, honorary degree in industrial design from the University of Architecture, Genoa, Italy.

Honours:  Two-time winner of the Compasso d’Oro (in 2004 and in 2008) – the leading industrial design award.

Inspirations: “He [Tito Prato, skipper of the family’s yacht] was my teacher. He was really the person that, more than anybody else, introduced me to the sea and to sailing, yes… and then, also, to racing.”

Career highlights and lowlights

“On the sports side, OK, I can say the things that I won; the world championships or the European championships. From the business side, it’s difficult to say because it’s a high when you are able to sell a new boat, not just because it’s new but because it’s different, it’s innovative.

“When you find a client who accepts your new idea, this is a fantastic moment, this is a real high in your career. And it’s a low when you don’t find a client accepting or understanding your new ideas. So, you cannot sell it. I mean, ideas are the base of everything for an entrepreneur, and if you’re able to sell your idea, that’s a high. If you’re not able to sell it, that’s a low.”

wallywhy200 Full-Wide-Body Superyacht Design, Space and Speed

Sep 04, 2023

wallywhy200_cover image_B

Yet again Wally has pushed forward the boundaries of possibility creating a yacht that has never been seen before in the history of yachting. Wallywhy200 is the first model of the new wallywhy range, which made its World debut at Cannes Yachting Festival 2021 and already left an indelible mark on the world of yacht design.

The innovative motor yacht combining the comfort and space of a larger displacement yacht with the speed and performance of a semi-displacement, was developed by Wally design team led by Luca Bassani, Wally's Founder and Chief Designer, jointly with the Ferretti Group Engineering Department, working with Laurent Giles NA Ltd for naval architecture and Vallicelli Design Studio for interior design.

Image 2206:

"We are very proud of wallywhy200, a yacht that was a bit of a gamble but that today rewards us with a result that exceeds our wildest expectations," says Stefano de Vivo, Wally's Managing Director. "With its widebody design, this 200 GT yacht offers far larger volumes compared to traditional motorboats, plus a living space and stability that are definitely greater than any competitor’s. It essentially provides all the advantages of a catamaran but has none of the limitations, namely the lack of volume linked to the main central hull and mooring problems." "This innovative yacht in terms of performance and stability was born from the brilliant vision of Wally, from the considerable experience in building hulls of the Ferretti Group, which has been designing its hulls ‘in-house’ for over 20 years, and from the collaboration with Laurent Giles Naval Architects. Wallywhy200 is a yacht that stands out on the international scene both for the essential design that distinguishes Wally yachts, and for its innovative concept, which can offer a different sailing experience to the owner. It is the ideal yacht to freely and safely regain possession of one's space with family and friends." "Like all Wallys, which for nearly 30 years has been ahead of their time and the setters of new standards in yachting design, the new compact superyacht wallywhy200 carries the 'Wow' factor engraved in its DNA," comments Luca Bassani, Wally's Founder and Chief Designer. "The new wallywhy200 expresses all its innovative power through new architectural elements, which represent a break with the past and with the typical clichés of a motor yacht. Ferretti Group made it possible to realize a concept that had been close to my heart for some time, believing in the success of a bold design that will improve the owner's experience on board and represent a turning point in the motor yacht market.”

Image 2192:

WOW-BOW: WALLY'S STYLISTIC MASTERPIECE THAT REFRAMES THE DESIGN RULES

In keeping with a design philosophy that aims, on the one hand, to combine form and function through distinctive and highly recognizable aesthetic and, on the other, to guarantee a new and immersive yachting experience with the element of water, wallywhy200 features a spectacular 4.7-meter-high glazed bow housing a stunning 37 m2 master suite overlooking the sea, with an uninterrupted 270-degree view of the horizon. This cabin stands out also for its exceptional noise levels thanks to the positioning of the engine room which is located at the opposite end of the yacht.

Image 2189:

The eye-catching upper deck has a futuristic glass and carbon dome, a distinctive Wally feature that is reminiscent of the clean, angular look of the legendary wallypower118. Also on the upper deck, the extended, structural top with no supporting pillars is a masterpiece of design and engineering for its exceptional stability and strength.

THE ESSENTIAL ELEGANCE OF THE INTERIOR

The wallywhy200 features a four-cabin layout: the master cabin with two separate bathrooms on the main deck, a VIP and two guest cabins on the lower deck. The restful and natural color palette of neutral and sandy tones creates a refined and timeless effect.

ON-DEMAND INFOTAINMENT AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

Thanks to the 5G wireless network connection with home automation control, guests are able to comfortably manage all the audio/video systems via mobile devices, both outside and inside the yacht. Through Naviop's integrated system, they will also be able to check navigation data, keeping the yacht's progress and parameters constantly under control. The first unit features a state-of-the-art 55 inch TV in the upper living room and a 5.1 Premium sound system on the main and upper decks, while a sophisticated Sonance sound system serves the outdoor areas.

Image 2200:

BEACH CLUB: A HUGE LIVING ROOM ON THE WATER

Experiencing the sea means also enjoying activities in direct contact with the water. The wallywhy200 is unsurpassed in this respect too: the folding beach club bulwarks, for example, not only allow access to the sea on three sides (according to a radically innovative concept), but also expand the living area to 32 m2, transforming it into a true terrace over the water, with size and features that make all competitors, even larger ones, pale in comparison. In addition, wallywhy200 boasts two garages with a storage capacity never seen before on yachts of this size, capable of accommodating a 4.05m jet tender, wave runner, seabob, paddleboard and all manner of water toys.

Image 2183:

SPEED RHYMES WITH STABILITY

As all Wally hulls, the wallywhy200 is capable of cutting the waves without hitting and thus minimizing the pitching, the enhanced power package offers four Volvo Penta D-13 IPS 1350 engines 1,000 hp each. Thanks to these groundbreaking features, wallywhy200 can cruise at any speed (23 knots top speed), maintaining a horizontal position without reducing the guests’ comfort on board, which is unique among fast semi-displacement yachts. Its width combined with the fin stabilizers - as a standard feature - that can be activated when at anchor or while cruising, and with two Seakeepers, ensures greater stability compared to conventional hulls.

Wally Unveils 165 Wallypower Concept, 101ft Sloop

Wally founder Luca Bassani and designer Espen Oeino team up on 165 Wallypower, while 101 sloop is brand’s first sailing yacht since Ferretti Group takeover.

Renowned designer Espen Oeino and Wally founder Luca Bassani have collaborated for the first time to create the breathtaking 165 Wallypower, a fast, open 50m superyacht that will “forever change the way the world sees Mediterranean cruiser yachts”.

The 165 is the first power superyacht concept by Wally since it joined Ferretti Group

The 165 is Wally’s first power superyacht concept since it joined Ferretti Group

Inspired by the radical look of the 118 Wallypower, one of Wally’s first breakaway power boat creations, Oeino took the essence of Bassani’s vision and transformed it into a new category for the brand. The result is a Mediterranean cruiser that is fast, cool and contemporary, with a piercing bow to cut through waves.

Boasting a volume of 499GT, the 165 Wallypower is the first power superyacht concept to be released by the brand since it became a part of Ferretti Group, which is developing the yacht’s naval architecture. The yacht is expected to reach 30 knots with diesel engines and waterjet propulsion.

Stefano de Vivo, Managing Director of Wally and CCO of Ferretti Group, said: “We believe that the essence of Wally as interpreted by Espen has completely transformed how we will see the Mediterranean cruiser yacht, which up until this point has been a market lacking in innovation. The 165 Wallypower is a cutting-edge product in its category.”

Oeino’s concept incorporates features that are distinctively ‘Wally’: uncluttered lines and open decks with a sharp, angular look; a large interior volume made possible through smart naval architecture and design; clean outdoor spaces with natural flow to the interior for an ‘indoor-outdoor’ lifestyle; and a sense of always being close to the water.

The main deck aft has an outdoor dining space and swimming pool flanked by large sunpads

The main deck aft has an outdoor dining space and swimming pool

“I’ve always been an admirer of Wally design,” Oeino said. “Luca and I share the same vision and approach, rooted in a profound passion for the sea and sailing. With the 165 Wallypower, two like-minded, driven brands have now finally come together to create a new icon.”

The owner’s stateroom is on the main deck, with four en-suite guest cabins on the lower deck. Midships on the main deck is a large saloon and dining area with double fold-down balconies, leading to an outdoor dining space and swimming pool flanked by large sunpads.

Port and starboard staircases take guests to the water’s edge with a beach club featuring U-shaped seating and large, fold-down bulwarks. Typical of Wally’s signature look, railings and deck equipment are kept to a minimum, while above, the sundeck extends a full 15m.

Bassani said: “Wally products must always be innovative and deliver the unexpected. Espen completely understood what was needed to bring the Wally ‘wow factor’ to the fast open market. There is no mistaking it: this is a pure Wally design for a new purpose.”

The new 101ft sloop is designed by Judel / Vrolijk, Wally and Pininfarina

The company has also revealed a new 101ft high-performance sloop, its first sailing yacht since becoming part of the Ferretti Group. The naval architecture is by Judel / Vrolijk and the exterior styling has been developed by Wally in collaboration with Pininfarina.

The semi-custom project features a new-generation hull shape, powerful sail plan, carbon composite construction, 50cm-high bulwarks and the new Wally Magic keel. Deck and interior layouts, with three to five guest cabins, are based on a flexible platform that can be adapted to owners’ needs.

The New 50m 165 Wallypower from Espen Øino and Luca Bassani

Monaco-based yacht builder Wally, now part of the renowned Ferretti Group, has recently launched a new super yacht concept, the 50 meter 165 Wallypower. The yacht brand collaborated with the acclaimed designers Espen Øino and Luca Bassan to create a modern alternative to the classic Mediterranean cruiser.

The 499 GT concept before you boasts a spacious owner’s stateroom on the main deck, with the lower deck featuring 4 generous en suite staterooms, alongside the crew and service areas which are situated towards the bow. The new yacht can accommodate up to 10 guests and 10 crew members in style.

On the main deck, there’s a modern saloon and dining area boasting fold-down balconies, plus an outdoor dining space and a decent-sized swimming pool complete with large sunpads. On both sides of the yacht there are two lovely staircases which lead easily to the water’s edge.

The 165 Wallypower also comes with a 15 meter sundeck complete with sunpads aft. There’s also a bridge completely wrapped in glass, featuring a large raised settee and an U-shaped bar with large hardtop protection and again, plenty of high glass around.

Wally Yacht’s latest project uses a combination of diesel engines and waterjet propulsion, so you can expect an impressive top speed of 30 knots for the new yacht. Would you like to be the lucky owner of the new Wallypower?

Wally WHY200: The first full-wide-body Superyacht

celebreMagazine

Yet again Wally has pushed forward the boundaries of possibility creating a yacht that has never been seen before in the history of yachting. WHY200 is the first unit of the new WHY range, which made its world debut at Cannes Yachting Festival 2021, is going to leave an indelible mark on the world of yacht design. The innovative motor yacht combining the comfort and space of a larger displacement yacht with the speed and performance of a semi-displacement was developed by Wally design team led by Luca Bassani, jointly with the Ferretti Group Engineering Department, working with Laurent Giles NA Ltd for naval architecture and Studio A. Vallicelli & C for interior design.

“We are very proud of WHY200, a yacht that was a bit of a gamble but that today rewards us with a result that exceeds our wildest expectations,”  says Stefano de Vivo, Wally Managing Director.  “With its widebody design, this 200 GT yacht offers far larger volumes compared to traditional motorboats, plus a living space and stability that are definitely greater than any competitors. WHY200 is a yacht that will stand out on the international scene both for the essential design that distinguishes Wally yachts and for its innovative concept, which can offer a different sailing experience to the owner. It is the ideal yacht to freely and safely regain possession of one’s space with family and friends.”

“Like all Wallys, which for 25 years have been ahead of their time and the setters of new standards in yachting design, the new compact superyacht WHY200 carries the ‘Wow’ factor engraved in its DNA ,”  comments Luca Bassani, Wally Founder and Chief Designer.  “The  new WHY200 expresses all its innovative power through new architectural elements, which represent a break with the past and with the typical clichés of a motor yacht. Ferretti Group made it possible to realise a concept that had been close to my heart for some time, believing in the success of a bold design that will improve the owner’s experience onboard and represent a turning point in the motor yacht market.”

In keeping with a design philosophy that aims, on the one hand, to combine form and function through distinctive and highly recognizable aesthetic and, on the other, to guarantee a new and immersive yachting experience with the element of water, WHY200 features a spectacular 4.7-metre-high glazed bow housing a stunning 37 m 2  master suite overlooking the sea, with an uninterrupted 270-degree view of the horizon.

The first unit, displaying an exclusive “Wally Silver” colour, will feature a four-cabin layout: the master cabin with two separate bathrooms on the main deck, a VIP and two guest cabins on the lower deck. An absolute novelty is the spectacular one-piece laminated carbon staircase which, as well as having a load-bearing function, is an extremely light element connecting the three decks and making the bulkheads superfluous in the huge 61 m 2  open space living area, enhanced by a practical show-cooking kitchen. Open-pore teak was chosen for the furniture. The walkways of the two living halls and the lower deck corridor are also teak. The restful and natural colour palette of neutral and sandy tones creates a refined and timeless effect.

Thanks to the 5G wireless network connection with home automation control, guests are able to comfortably manage all the audio/video systems via mobile devices, both outside and inside the yacht. Through Naviop’s integrated system, they will also be able to check navigation data, keeping the yacht’s progress and parameters constantly under control. The first unit features a state-of-the-art 55 inch TV in the upper living room and a 5.1 Premium sound system on the main and upper decks, while a sophisticated Sonance sound system serves the outdoor areas.

Experiencing the sea means also enjoying activities in direct contact with the water. The WHY200 is unsurpassed in this respect too: the folding beach club bulwarks, for example, not only allow access to the sea on three sides (according to a radically innovative concept) but also expand the living area to 32 m 2 , transforming it into a true terrace over the water, with size and features that make all competitors, even larger ones, pale in comparison. In addition, WHY200 boasts two garages with a storage capacity never seen before on yachts of this size, capable of accommodating a 4.05m jet tender, wave runner, seabob, paddleboard and all manner of water toys.

Its trail-blazing and highly performing hull tested in the naval tank and, as all Wally hulls, capable of cutting the waves without hitting and thus minimizing the pitching, in the first unit is powered by four Volvo Penta D-13 IPS 1350 engines 1000 hp each. Thanks to these groundbreaking features, WHY200 can cruise at any speed (23 knots top speed), maintaining a horizontal position without reducing the guests’ comfort onboard, which is unique among fast semi-displacement yachts.

Its width combined with the fin stabilisers – as a standard feature – that can be activated when at anchor or while cruising, and with two Seakeepers, ensures greater stability compared to conventional hulls.
