IGY Málaga Marina: The Perfect Superyacht Stopover Cruising East or West

The port city of Málaga on the Costa del Sol in Andalusia is one of the world’s oldest, founded in the 8th century B.C. by the Phoenicians and nestled into the super modern skyline, the city’s hilltop citadels of the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro provide an enduring reminder of Moorish rule.

Following a state-of-the-art redevelopment program, IGY Málaga Marina is now the first dedicated and bespoke superyacht marina when entering the Med, the perfect stopover when transiting east or west and an attractive location for winter berthing.

Located in a buzzing city centre location situated just 37 miles from Gibraltar and 10 minute drive from Málaga International airport, this Costa del Sol capital-based marina offers an abundance of world-class provisioning options. "The location is perfect," adds IGY’s front desk manager Alejandra Cruces. ‘You cross the street and in 500m, you are at the cathedral in the heart of the city centre, which is compact, totally safe and has everything you need."

The two-year renovation has seen the creation of 33 slips, 31 of which are dedicated to superyachts of up to 180m and two reserved for local tourist boats. "We have almost 800m of berthing space so it’s very versatile," explains Alejandra. "This means we can house yachts of 180m plus and can reconfigure the layout according to demand."

Piers 1 and 2 offer slips to superyachts from 30m upwards with a 2000 amp power supply which makes the marina one of the highest powered of its kind. "The beauty is that the largest vessels can turn off their engines and connect to our supply instead of using up their fuel," adds Alejandra. "It’s this, plus our very calm waters - unusual for many marinas - which will be a big attraction for larger vessels."

Indeed such still waters year-round are unusual for a port in this position. "There was a lot of water movement here before work started, so we constructed two large dikes to minimise it and ensure 360 wave-free days," explains Alejandra. "It was a big problem for local yacht owners before, as the waves hit the end of the port and boats were moving all the time, but this will make the waters calmer and offers more protection."

Add to this, 24hr security and surveillance, a 24/7 concierge service and an arid climate which boasts average daytime winter temperatures of 17–20 degrees, and you can see just a few of the myriad benefits IGY Málaga Marina has to offer discerning yacht owners.

Two main marina buildings comprise an office with an adjacent restaurant with a beautiful terrace overlooking the picturesque marina. The Dockmaster’s office will also have a small crew area and a second terrace overhanging the sea for crew members to enjoy.

"Málaga’s nightlife is well known for being lively and sophisticated – people love to dress up and really enjoy the nights and the ambience here. There are live concerts in many restaurants and bars, and you’ll find everything from 80s disco to modern Flamenco."

As an area renowned for fine dining, amazing local ingredients and fabulous wine production, it’s quite simply a gastronomic dream. Visit the vineyards of Bodegas Excelencia, enjoying a wine tasting and food pairing lunch in an idyllic setting before watching vibrant Flamenco performances in colourful traditional costume or perhaps taking in an exciting evening horse race on the beaches of Sanlúcar de Barrameda on the Cádiz coast as the sun sets over the sea.

Alejandra advises visitors to start their voyage of discovery at the Picasso Museum, admiring the works and surroundings of the most famous painter in town before enjoying a drink at the museum café. After exploring charming Calle Molina Lario and the beautiful cathedral, perhaps wander to the Plaza Poeta Alfonso Canales where you can order a cocktail and watch the sunset from an elegant rooftop bar.

The Mercado Central is a great place to stop for provisions on your way back to the marina after relishing in the beautiful murals and street art, interspersed with art galleries, the CAC Museum and gastropubs galore in the Soho neighbourhood. One of Málaga’s most famous sons, Hollywood film star Antonio Banderas, is the artistic director of the Teatro del Soho.

Make time also to get up close to the Alcazaba, which was built on a hillside in the 11th century by the Moors to protect the city and offers stunning views of the coastline. The Roman Theatre and Gibralfaro Castle are also worthwhile stop offs as you admire neighbourhoods and buildings dating back to the last millennia before trying out the authentic Arabic Baths where you can enjoy a wonderful spa experience.

Equally impressive is a journey to the natural monument of El Torcal de Antequera, just 30 miles from the marina, where you can embark on an adventurous and jaw-dropping hike in one of the world’s most unusual areas of rock formation.

So können Urlauber seit wenigen Jahren den neu gebauten Yachthafen von Almerimar bei El Ejido nutzen. Dort gibt es mehr als 1 000 Liegeplätze und es können Boote mit einer Länge von bis zu 60 Metern anlegen.

In der Meerenge von Gibraltar befindet sich in Algeciras ein passender Yachthafen. Gleich gegenüber liegt der Yachthafen von Gibraltar, die Marina Alcaidesa. Wer eine größere Motoryacht für eine Woche mietet, muss ebenfalls mit 1 200 Euro kalkulieren. Zudem verlangen die meisten Anbieter eine Kaution, die mindestens 400 Euro beträgt.

Die Sport- und Yachthäfen in Andalusien sind mit dem üblichen Standard ausgerüstet (Tankanlage, Slipanlage, Strom- und Frischwasseranschluss). Für die Liege-Gebühren müssen Urlauber im Vergleich zur Ostsee mit einem doppelt so hohen Preis kalkulieren.

What is a yacht charter?

If you’re new to the world of yacht chartering, even the language can be alienating. A yacht charter is the process of exclusively hiring a yacht for yourself and your guests.

While most charters are for leisure, be it with friends or family, some individuals and companies choose to hire a yacht for business-related reasons, with the undivided service and uncompromised privacy making boats an excellent place to hold meetings and conferences.

The length of a yacht charter depends entirely on your needs; some choose to book for a long weekend or even just a matter of hours if hosting a meeting or conference, whereas others opt for an extended vacation and may charter a yacht for several weeks or even months. Technically, using a broker to charter a yacht is at your discretion; however, if it is your first time chartering, using a broker comes highly recommended – especially when hiring a larger-than-life superyacht. Yacht brokers will draw upon a large network of connections and extensive industry knowledge to help find the best vessel for your unique requirements.

Once you’ve had an initial consultation, a broker will typically offer a selection of yachts that suit your needs and help you make a final decision. From here, the yacht broker will handle the entire booking process, from securing the initial boat booking to planning each element of your onboard itinerary, including docking points. A reputable yacht charter broker will also be available to contact throughout the duration of your time on board, giving you and your guests complete peace of mind.

Occasionally, first-time charters mistakenly think that booking directly will shave some digits off the total cost, but it actually falls on the yacht owner/charter company to pay the broker fees – not the charterer. In fact, you will often find that a broker will rely on their insider connections to secure the best deal for their clients.

When it comes to choosing a yacht broker you have plenty to choose from, but names like Burgess , Fraser and Northrop & Jonson dominate the superyacht realm. Some people opt for a freelance yacht charter broker, but we’d suggest only heading down this route if you have a pre-existing relationship or they come highly recommended by someone you trust. You should also ensure that any broker you work with is a member of the MYBA Worldwide Yachting Association.

How to choose a yacht

As we mentioned, your yacht broker will do the hard work when it comes to choosing a yacht, calling upon their wide boat knowledge to present a selection of yachts to you. However, to be able to do this properly they will need a solid understanding of your preferences, requirements and budget beforehand.

The key things you should consider when chartering a superyacht are: the number of guests you want to bring on board (remember the legal limit for most yachts is 12 guests, including personal staff); whether or not the yacht needs to be child-friendly, the amount of indoor/outdoor space you’d like on board; where you’d like to travel, as many yachts are only available in certain parts of the world; and the on board amenities you’d like – for example, is an indoor swimming pool a priority or does a dancefloor sound more appealing?

The type of yachting vacation you’re seeking is also important when choosing a boat: for intrepid travelers with a taste for adventure, a sturdier explorer yacht such as Silver Yachts’ Bold or Ragnar by Royal Niestern Sand would be more suitable than a classic yacht, designed for luxury and comfort.

However, if it is your first time chartering a superyacht, don’t feel concerned about going in clueless – your yacht broker will be able to guide you through every step of choosing a vessel.

Bareboat vs skippered superyacht charter

When chartering a luxury yacht, you will sometimes be given the choice between a ‘bareboat’ or ‘skippered’ charter – bareboat being a crewless charter and skippered including a full complement of staff. However, you will find that when verging into superyacht territory, all charters are skippered for both your safety and comfort.

Again, you can always discuss the on-board crew specifications with your broker, and this is a good opportunity to outline what you’d like from your yachting experience. For example, if you have a taste for adventure, ensure that there is a watersports instructor within the crew. Looking for a more relaxing on-board experience? Ask your broker to look into securing a masseuse for your journey.

When to book a superyacht charter

When to begin booking a yacht charter is an important question. Leading charter company Northrop & Johnson recommends reaching out to a broker no later than 10 months in advance if you want to travel during peak times (July and August in the summer season, Christmas and New Year during winter), and three to six months ahead for quieter periods. However, with popular yachts booking up as much as a year in advance, it’s advisable to reach out to a broker at least 12 months ahead of time if you have specific boat or date requirements.

When booking in advance, remember that local events will heavily impact availability. For example, if you’re planning a European tour, take note of events such as the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix when both vessels and docking spaces will be in high demand.

How much does it cost to charter a superyacht?

It’s no secret that yacht charters are expensive, with many first-timers unprepared for the hidden costs. It’s generally accepted that the biggest price indicator of a yacht charter is boat size – so if you’re heading into superyacht territory, expect an impressive fee.

However, other factors will impact the cost of chartering a superyacht , such as crew reputation, ship design and the age of the vessel. For example, Fraser Yachts offer a week on the 298.5-ft Moonlight II which was first built in 2005 from €645,000 (approximately $768,200), but prices for the 278-ft Solandge, which was built in 2013 and refitted in 2019, begin at €1m ($1.2m) per week.

Although some charter costs are inclusive, meaning expenses such as captain and crew, fuel, food and drink are included, you’ll find that a ‘plus expenses’ charter is more common. With such charters, only the crew and ship are included in the price, an ‘Advance Provisioning Allowance’ (APA) is used to cover the necessary extras and is usually around 30% of the weekly charter fee. What the APA doesn’t cover however is crew gratuity which although given at your discretion, is expected, with the going rate around 15-20%.

To avoid tarnishing your vacation with unexpected fees and charges, ask your broker for a full price breakdown beforehand, including any potential docking fees and additional taxes.

Once you confirm your reservation, your broker will process your payment.

• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is confirmed more than 7 days in advance, a deposit of either $1,000 USD or 50% of the total cost of the reservation (whichever is greater) is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 7 days away, the remainder of the amount due is processed.
• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is made 7 days or less in advance, the total price of your reservation is processed immediately.
• If you are booking for a multi-day charter and your reservation is confirmed more than 30 days in advance, a deposit of 50% of the cost of the yacht is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 30 days away, the other 50% is collected for the price of the yacht, plus the APA, plus the taxes due.

Terms of refunds are dictated by the Charter Agreement. Generally, once a payment is collected, it is non-refundable. In certain circumstances, as dictated by the Charter Agreement, credits can be provided so you will be able to enjoy your yacht charter at a future date that is convenient for you.
