Sam's Star Island Yacht Club & Marina

Play in the heart of downtown baltimore, marina info.

With its unique resemblance of a star floating on the ocean, Sam’s Star Island Yacht Club has come a long way from the boat yard it once was. Sam Gershowitz and his team have turned it into a great destination for boaters on the East Coast. “It’s a beautiful place,” Gershowitz says with pride. “It’s a yacht club and a marina, and we cater to people here. It’s a very comfortable place to hang around.”

No marina in the area offers more facilities and services. The Ship’s Store is one of the largest tackle shops with bait of every type, an expert staff, marine supplies including electrical, polishes and waxes, cleaning materials, marine safety equipment, boat batteries, collectors’ items, groceries, and a full repair service. Visitors can sit down for a casual breakfast, lunch and dinner at Star Island Grill, serving fresh locally caught seafood. Spend Saturday nights at Star Island Grill for live poolside music and dancing overlooking Lake Montauk and the ocean. With all it has to offer, Sam’s Star Island Yacht Club is an inviting club and marina for all. We invite you to consider the possibilities at Sam’s Star Island.

I no idea why the pin is in the middle of the sea? This place is in Star Island and within Yacht Club Marian. Why map has to be so confusing? Finally, we went to the island for my breakfast with my husband and our dog. The place is in the Yacht Club Marina. Pet friendly and warm welcome. The morning we went wasn't busy at all and it was raining but we were happy to have place to sit. The breakfast was American style, and the view was extraordinary! I can't imagine in summer night this place is probably pack!

Interesting to see such polarization in the reviews! I saw it as a mix of both without ever crossing into either extreme. In general the appetizers were good, not great. The blackened fish over a Caesar salad for my main meal was a safe bet I was very happy with. The best part about going here was that it was able to accommodate a very large group without a reservation. This alone is a feature and not a bug since it is a solid average meal. It is also a stop on one (is there more than one?) of the "booze" cruises that are available to be booked in Montauk. Thus, use that as a guide for where to place this on the scale of what you are looking for in a place to eat.

We had breakfast there this morning, service, food and ambiance was great! The kids love fed the fish and we enjoy a after breakfast frozen mudslide !

Just left the yacht club....well actually got chased out by Alex the dock manager. My wife and I were enjoying amazing cocktails at the bar. Def try the dirty banana! The approach Alex used to have us move our boat to a slip was totally unnecessary and left a horrible taste in our mouths. We wanted to go into the store to buy multiple items but after the manager Alex was done talking to us. We just left. And we won't be back ! If I could do less than 1 star I would.

Saving the best Montauk review for last. If I'm not staying in Montauk and I caught fish, I'd put my fish bootie in the cooler and drive home to soak those mamasitas in buttermilk. But if your staying at a hotel and catch a bunch of fish, what do you do?? Enter the Star Island Yacht Club & Marina. Back in the day there was a Chinese food place on Main st that would cook your catch. Outta business. I asked the guys on the Lazy Bones where the heck am I going to have my catch cooked? They all said go to Star Island Yacht Club & Marina, they'll do it all right. Now I don't have a fish story to tell. It's not one or two fish to cook but the biggest damn fish caught on the boat that day. We're talkin' fish baby! We drive in and and see a cool sign, You caught it, we'll cook it. Whew. The ladies are saying, we smell like bait, lets go back and shower, yada yada yada. All I'm thinking about is my fish has a shelf life and can this dude cook all this fish?? Oh hell yes. We're driving into the Marina and see all the boats, with a sign to the restaurant. We walk in like four fish hunters. We talk to the people behind the counter and ask, can you cook all this fish? The chef nods and takes everything from us. We ordered a few sides while waiting for our main course. Then, it all came out at once. What I'm looking at was insane! Fish tacos, deep fried fish, broiled fish, blackened fish, pan fried fish, fish!!!! The chef was a true chef, everything was cooked perfectly. OMG, we ate like champs. And we had leftovers! We brought the fish back to the hotel and had lunch poolside the next day. I don't know about the actual marina but the restaurant at Star Island Yacht Club & Marina was awesome. If you catch fish on your trip, you need to come to "The Yacht Club". Pinkie up!

The fish we caught is being served to us!!

Brought our catch here, had 4 different preparations and everything was amazing. So many layers of flavor, fresh ingredients and beautiful presentation We'll be back soon to try regular menu !

Called ahead and brought our catch of fluke and porgy in to make some tacos to go. They asked for about 30 minutes, we stayed and had a beer (which they also allow you to walk out with to enjoy the marina), then came back in to claim the prepared meal. Made an incredible set of 24 tacos, half blackened and half fried - both equally delicious! I love fish tacos and these were likely the best I've ever had. Fish was cooked perfectly. Seaweed salad, a slightly spicy sauce, and other crunchy and perfectly cooked fresh veggies were all excellent and gave them a slightly Asian flare. Thoroughly enjoyed and will continue bringing our catches here

Wanted to eat somewhere out of town for breakfast and decided on star Island yacht club and Marina. What a mistake! Ordered French toast with fruit and it was three slices of stale bread and a small cup of sour fruit! For $16 and what a joke! Worst breakfast I ever had

Photo of Susan I.

We have eaten her often and the food is just ok. On our way out of MTK to home decided to stop and have a quick dinner at 6:30pm. Only a few tables; great we thought! Nope. Worst service ever! Several tables sat down after us and got served and left. We ordered 2 appys. Wings and baked clams. Both good! Over an hour later...still no drink refills, no water and no dinner. Many other tables have come and gone and here we sit. Asked the waiter what was going on? Everything ok? He said yea yea you don't understand how it works here. Never again

Star Island Yacht Club & Marina: Montauk’s Top Sport Fishing Destination

2017 6 Star Island 1

Ever since he was a young man, Sam Gershowitz was attracted to the allure of Montauk. Over the years, he spent his weekends there pursuing his two main passions: boating and sport fishing. Already a successful business owner, Gershowitz hoped to find a way to turn his love for the water into a destination for those who shared his passion.

While looking for the perfect spot, Gershowitz came upon a rundown marina. He introduced himself to the marina’s proprietors and asked whether they were interested in selling their business. “They asked me, ‘Who are you?’” Gershowitz recalled. “I explained that I owned a couple of scrap metal recycling facilities in Medford and Bay Shore. After a pleasant discussion, they became interested and it wasn’t long before we started discussing the price. That night, I couldn’t sleep. I wanted the marina so bad.”

It was in late December 1986 when Gershowitz and his wife, Marlena, were vacationing in the Bahamas that his dream was fully set in motion. “I got a phone call from one of the owners. He said, ‘If you want to do the deal, we have to close before the end of the year.’” By December 31, 1986, Gershowitz officially owned what is now known as Star Island Yacht Club & Marina.

Today, Star Island is the premier destination for sport fishermen and boaters alike. At Star Island you will find 170 slips, accommodating both seasonal and transient boaters. All slips are on floating docks, and provide each boater with cable TV, water, electric, wireless Internet access, and diesel fuel. Star Island guests can also enjoy the picnic/BBQ area or take a dip in Star Island’s heated swimming pool.

This year Star Island is proud to announce the installation of a brand-new 100-ton, open-end travel lift, which is the only one of its kind on Long Island. There is also a brand-new 50-ton lift and a full repair service and parts department.

For avid fishermen from up and down the East Coast, the annual sport fishing tournaments make Star Island the hotspot in Montauk.

Similar to NASCAR’s Daytona 500, Star Island’s annual Father’s Day weekend Shark Tournament is the contest to participate in after a long winter to test and hone your fishing skills against some of the finest fishermen on the East Coast. This year, Star Island will be celebrating the 31st Annual Star Island Shark Tournament, being held June 16-17, 2017. As the marina’s largest and longest-running event, this tournament continually draws large crowds of competitors and spectators. Last year’s event was no exception as nearly 800 anglers competed for their share of more than $550,000 in cash and prizes. The highlight of the tournament was the winning catch: a 730-pound mako, the heaviest in recent memory, caught by the crew aboard the Thor III.

The popularity of the Shark Tournament has even transcended beyond the local sport fishing community. In 2013, NBC Sports was on hand to film the tournament for a two-part episode of Shark Hunters, which followed anglers on their journey to haul in “the big one” and everything that transpired from departure to weigh-in.

But Star Island isn’t only known for its Father’s Day weekend Shark Tournament. From July 9 through July 15, the marina will host the Fourth Annual Fluke Tournament. Originally conceived as a day-long tournament, this year it has been expanded to a full week of anglers competing to catch the heaviest fluke and sea bass for cash prizes and custom trophies.

On August 4 and 5, Star Island will be celebrating the 25th Annual Mako, Thresher & Tuna Tournament, originally known as the Mako & Thresher Tournament, Star Island expanded the tournament to include tuna and overnight fishing. Star Island closes out the tournament season on Columbus Day weekend with the Eighth Annual Striped Bass Tournament on October 8.

2017 6 Star Island 2

For those looking to catch the action, the Star Island Grill offers casual dining overlooking Montauk Harbor. This is the perfect spot for spectators to come and visit while family and friends compete in the events. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Star Island Grill serves up a variety of fresh fish, summer salads, monster burgers, ribs, chicken and signature sandwiches, as well as a children’s menu. The angler can also bring their own fresh-caught fish to the Star Island Grill, for the “You hook it, we cook it menu.” The bar has a line of exotic blended drinks, cocktails and beer. “Our menu reinforces the Star Island Grill as a unique tourist destination restaurant that attracts both boaters and non-boaters alike,” Gershowitz said.

Star Island’s Ship’s Store is known as the largest ship’s store and tackle shop on the East End of Long Island. Star Island has everything the boater needs, including footwear, clothing, marine hardware, engine supplies, groceries, coolers, and ice. For the avid fisherman, you will find rods, reels, bait and tackle. The expert staff will assist anglers with finding the best fishing hot spots on the water, and put together a rod, reel and line package that will suit their needs. As the leading live bait shop in Montauk, Star Island has everything a fisherman needs to reel in a striped bass, or doormat fluke, including live eels, spot and croakers. Frozen bait, including bunker, chum, butterfish, herring, sardines, chunking baits, ballyhoo, squid, spearing, sand eels, smelts and clams, is also available.

For the captain who prides himself on being hands-on, the store carries an array of marine cleaners and waxes, brushes and varnishes, electrical connectors and wires, hardware and plumbing fittings, lines and fenders, lubricants, and oil and fuel filters. Star Island is also the summer home of the Marlena, Gershowitz’s 105-foot Jim Smith. Being that Gershowitz is an avid fisherman, you will find the Marlena on the fluke and striped bass grounds of Montauk, as well as the canyons. When not fishing, he and his wife Marlena, who recently celebrated their 50th anniversary, cruise the Bahamas and Caribbean.

Reflecting back upon his 55 years in business, Gershowitz said, “After being in the scrap business for over 50 years, and now in business for 31 years in Montauk, I am proud to say that through the efforts of the dedicated staff at Star Island, what was once a rundown marina is now one of the finest marinas on the East Coast. Today, Star Island is a destination hot spot for the avid sportfisherman, cruising boater and families visiting Montauk for the first time. Come to Montauk and you will see why we are the best of the best.”

8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In

Yacht Clubs and Marinas

FoodfindsAsia.com | 8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In | Filipinos’ history as a maritime people date back to prehistoric times. In fact, the Philippines’ basic sociopolitical unit today, the barangay, traces its etymological origins to the balangay , the ancient outrigger boats that were used by precolonial Filipino communities to explore and conquer islands this side of the Pacific. As a people belonging to a seafaring culture, it’s no wonder that modern Filipinos are taking a retrospective look at their glorious past as Austronesian mariners and are developing a renewed love for the ocean and marinas as present-day yachtsmen.

Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.

Are you part of the demographic that’s become enamored of the yachting lifestyle? Do you want to know where in the country you can berth your watercraft? Leading sailboat and motorboat authority Europa Yachts is happy to enter the conversation, and recommends the following locations for discovering the Philippines through yachting. Here is a short list of clubs and marinas in the country, organized by island region.

Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila

Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.

Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales

The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.

Punta Fuego Yacht Club, Batangas

Peaceful Punta Fuego is a mecca for those who love the sport of sailing. As per its official website, the Punta Fuego Yacht Club aims to serve “a dynamic and vibrant community of boat enthusiasts and yacht owners.” This it does by playing host to a diverse population of watercrafts, from large catamarans and mono-hull yachts to small boats. Non-members of the club may use the berths for up to 3 weeks, and can refuel at the marina’s fueling station. The yacht club offers other amenities such as locker rooms, shower rooms, Internet facilities, a chart room, and a restaurant called Barracuda Bar, which serves delicious fares. Outside of the yachting crowd, Punta Fuego Yacht Club also caters to those wishing to celebrate weddings, conferences, and corporate events in their opulent quarters.

Puerto Galera Yacht Club, Oriental Mindoro

Further south, yachtsmen may moor at the Puerto Galera Yacht Club in Oriental Mindoro, an island location that’s home to tourist attractions like the Sabang Wreck dive site, lively beachfront resorts, and the Malasimbo Music Festival. Puerto Galera Yacht Club has been in operation for almost thirty years and lends services such as refueling provisions and yacht repairs from its marina. Boat owners also enjoy optimal convenience if mooring here, as they can also shop for spare parts in the nearby Batangas port.

Busuanga Yacht Club, Puerta del Sol Bay Marina, Palawan

Beautiful Palawan is a bucket-list destination for many, especially those who dream of cruising its crystalline waters. Accommodating the yachting community in this island province is the Busuanga Yacht Club, which promises secure mooring amidst breathtaking white-sand beaches. Here, each vessel will benefit from a typhoon-safe harbor, easy refueling, and direct access to transportation hubs like the New Busuanga Airport. Adjoining this marina is the Puerta del Sol Bay Resort, which offers luxurious accommodations to visitors. When not atop the deck of a boat, travelers can also explore the lagoons and freshwater lakes of Coron, go shipwreck diving, or relax in the hot springs of Maquinit.

Iloilo Sailing Club, Arevelo, Iloilo City, Iloilo

Iloilo Province is home to some of the country’s most beautiful old-world architecture, a flourishing ecotourism industry, and delectably fresh seafood cuisine. What will round off an unforgettable visit to Iloilo, however, is an excursion to the Iloilo Sailing Club on a leisure watercraft. The club accepts visitors and encourages membership in the case of medium and long-stay mooring. It also hosts a number of amenities and activities, including a dinghy storage, a beach bar and restaurant, and classes for those who want to learn about sailing. In recent months, the Iloilo Sailing Club has also been a convenient meet-up point for big maritime events, such as the Iloilo-Guimaras Paraw Regatta and the Seafarers’ Job Fair.

Cebu Yacht Club, Mactan Island, Cebu

The historic Mactan Island in Cebu was the site of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines. Now known as a commercial hub that hosts a prolific furniture and musical instruments industries, Mactan is also the location of the Cebu Yacht Club, an institution that is beloved by the locals. Aside from being an ideal spot to restock on much-needed fuel and supplies, the Cebu Yacht Club is also a trusted club to commission for boat repairs. There’s a good vibe in this club for everybody, as it sports both luxury accommodations and a waterfront strip of restaurants that laid-back diners can frequent. MINDANAO

Holiday Oceanview Marina, Samal Island, Davao del Norte

The Holiday Oceanview Marina is a major attraction of Samal Island in Davao del Norte Province, one that welcomes Filipino and foreign yachtsmen alike to moor within its premises. The space is quite roomy, in fact, with 56 berths that can fit vessels up to 15 meters in length. The club also has a boat ramp that can accommodate boats up to 18 meters in length. The well-guarded and weather-safe marina is a gateway to some of Mindanao’s finest attractions, such as the Pearl Farm, Hagimit Falls, and Giant Clam Sanctuary.

There’s no better way to discover the Philippines from end to end than getting onboard a seaworthy vessel and going on a long cruise, with stops in some of the most beautiful places in the country. Find a safe harbor in any of these major clubs and marinas, and participate in the renaissance of sailing in the Philippines.

5 restaurants with incredible views of Moscow

sam's star island yacht club

The restaurant Sixty is located on the 62nd floor of the Federation Tower, one of Moscow's tallest skyscrapers. At 225 meters above the ground, its height is no joke. You can almost touch the clouds during the day or count the stars and lights of the Moscow City skyscrapers at night.

When entering the restaurant, you immediately notice its huge panoramic windows and birch trees (which, unfortunately, are not real). And if you’re not ready to visit this restaurant for the sake of these windows alone then its talented French chef, Regis Trigel, should be more than enough to persuade you.

sam's star island yacht club

One guest named Alexander shared his impressions: "The point of the restaurant is the moment when the windows open, people get up from their seats to stand by the open windows and admire Moscow in the open air. In fact, from the usual procedure of airing the rooms, a whole show is made—that's great! It is said that this is the only place in all Moscow City where the upper parts of the windows are fully opened."

Keep in mind it is best to make a reservation in advance in order to get a table by the window.

International Business Center, Federation Tower, 60th floor,   Presnenskaya emb., 12

White Rabbit

White Rabbit took 23d place in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. That’s already impressive enough, but its view also stands out. White Rabbit is located beneath a glass dome on the 16th floor of Smolenskiy Passage. In the evening, a stunning view of the city is guaranteed, but make sure to reserve well in advance to get a table near the window.

sam's star island yacht club

Vladimir Mukhin, White Rabbit’s chef, makes Russian cuisine in line with the latest trends and using local products. Guests are usually delighted with the Chef's Table—evenings when Mukhin and other chefs from the restaurant present special menus. If you want to taste unusual combinations like borsch with carp or ice cream made from traditional black bread, this place is for you.

3 Smolenskaya square, 16th floor

Karlsson astonishes visitors with unbelievable views of the Kremlin and Moscow's historical center. The restaurant is especially pleasant in the summer when the veranda is open. The restaurant’s brand chef, Carlo Grecu from Italy, prepares Mediterranean cuisine. Try the risotto with king crab and avocado mousse.

Ovchinnikovskaya Embankment, 20/1, BC "Central City Tower"

Buono restaurant is located on the 29th and 30th floors of the renovated Ukraina Hotel, the new Radisson Royal, which is located in one of Moscow’s seven famous skyscrapers. Most of the seats are lined along panoramic windows on a covered terrace, providing a breathtaking view of the city. Another thing that attracts guests' attention is the wooden pizza oven. As you might have already guessed, Buono’s chef, Christian Lorenzini, specializes in classic Italian cuisine. Try the scallops with fresh spinach, green asparagus, morels and truffle sauce.

You might also want to visit one more restaurant in the same building—the rather more brutal Mercedes Bar, situated on the 31st floor. In Mercedes Bar, Christian Lorenzini prepares dishes based on the top hits of modern European cuisine.

2/1 Kutuzovsky Ave., Bld. 1, Hotel Radisson Royal

Seventh Heaven Restaurant

This restaurant is located around 330 meters above ground in the Ostankino TV Tower. It was opened in 1967 but closed for reconstruction following a fire in 2000. It finally reopened in 2016.

The restaurant complex covers three floors. In order to get there, you need to buy a ticket to the observation point. Then choose where to eat: in a bistro, cafe or restaurant. The tables stand on a platform that rotates in 40-minute intervals, showing you Moscow from a bird’s-eye view. The different dining options vary in terms of menu, price and interior decoration. Chef Andrey Gurko is guaranteed to complement the views with equally impressive gastronomic adventures.

Welcome to Portland Yacht Club

Portland Yacht Club is Oregon’s oldest yacht club and was founded in 1908 as the Willamette Motor Boat Club, and remains today as the premier club in the greater Portland area.   Located on NE Marine Drive on the banks of the Columbia River, the club offers open moorage for sailboats, boathouses for powerboats, and open docks for both.  The moorage facilities include private fuel dock and pump-out station. Club members have access to the Willow Bar Outstation located 12 miles downstream on Sauvie Island.   The Clubhouse facilities include the outdoor patio, main bar, grand ballroom and adjacent dining room with food and beverage service offered six days a week.  In addition, the club’s frequent activities include a full range of events, many of which are family oriented.
