A guide to the Rolex Yacht-Master

rolex yacht master water resistance

Over the years, the Rolex Yacht-Master watch has grown significantly, becoming one of the most diverse ranges of Rolex watch available.

The evolution of the luxury brand’s classic sports watch has extended beyond imaginable parallels, offering the avid collector various choices in bracelet style, bezel material and case size over three entire decades. As such, the Yacht-Master continues to prove itself a valuable and dependable mainstay within the manufacturer’s current catalogue, despite many models having become discontinued over the years. To define the Yacht-Master by Rolex, one would categorize it as a luxury sports watch, yet the collection can be broken down into two watches that remain incredibly similar to one another, despite a slightly different name.

. One is the Yacht-Master - a watch that can be considered the original sports model designed by Rolex, intended for setting sail with and enjoying whilst sailing aboard a luxury yacht. The Yacht-Master II, however, is designed for more precise functionality. Equipped with all the technology to enable an individual to record regatta timings, this younger distinction of the model is classified as a watch for racing a yacht as opposed to enjoying alongside a ride on one.

Whether wearing a Rolex Yacht-Master for aesthetical or practical reasons, however, its sleek looks and refined qualities are characteristics that are sought after far and wide amongst Rolex fans. Like with every Rolex, however, there are some factors to research and consider before investing in your very first Yacht-Master and these include pricing, history and features amongst many others.

What are the differences between the Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II?

To break down the key differences between the Rolex Yacht-Master and the Rolex Yacht-Master II, here are a few quick facts. The Yacht-Master is available in sizes of 29mm, 35mm, 37mm, 40mm and 42mm and is manufactured in Rolesium, Everose Rolesor, yellow gold Rolesor, solid 18ct yellow gold, solid 18ct white gold and 18ct Everose gold. The watch offers running hours, minutes and seconds and features a date function at 3 o’clock. A bidirectional rotating bezel has a 60-minute scale upon its surface and each model promises a water resistance of 100 meters. The models are offered on an Oyster bracelet or Oysterflex bracelet. The Rolex Yacht-Master II, however, is available in a 44mm size and is offered in a solid stainless steel version, as well as Everose Rolesor, 18ct yellow gold and 18ct white gold. Function-wise, the models offer running seconds with an adjustable countdown timer with a mechanical memory. The watch also features a ring command bezel, along with 100-meter water resistance and is fitted on an Oyster bracelet.

A brief history of the Rolex Yacht-Master watch collection

A brief history of both the Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II watches is beneficial before investing in a model from this range. Though not introduced until 1992, the Rolex Yacht-Master watch had foundations secured for its release much earlier than that. The brand had partnered with the New York Yacht Club back in 1958, laying down the roots to its heritage in sailing long before the iconic sports watch was conceptualized. By this point, Rolex had ready developed its first waterproof watch thanks to the 1926 Oyster case.

In 1966, the Gipsy Moth IV yacht was sailed 29,600 miles around the world by Francis Chichester, who wore a Rolex on his wrist amongst very few other measuring tools including a sextant and nautical chart. Thanks to the Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch he wore during his journey, time could be tracked amongst rough conditions for an entire 226 days whilst at sea. It put Rolex officially on the radar of seafarers as a manufacturer capable of producing robust and reliable tools for facing the challenging conditions experienced at sea.

In 1992 the world’s first official Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master was released and was crafted entirely from 18ct yellow gold, cementing its status as a luxury tool watch. Over the next 15 years, Rolex would experiment with various case materials until in 2007, the first Yacht-Master II was born. Sportsmen could utilize this tool watch whilst regatta racing – its chronograph features stood out clearly and legibly across the surface of the dial. A programmable countdown timer enabled the individual to measure the countdown time before a race commences for improved precision and a better start to the competition. With flyback and fly-forward functionality, synchronization with the Race Committee was a breeze.

Current Popular Rolex Yacht-Master models

As mentioned, it is the Yacht-Master’s affinity with the sea and its diverse range of styles and case materials that make this collection so widely sought-after within the Rolex watch stratosphere. Paired with cutting-edge technology and primed for yacht race competing, the series has much to offer any luxury sports watch fan. Here are just a few Rolex Yacht-Master watches that have proven their popularity as both a tool and an investment since their release.

Rolex Yacht-Master ref 126622

Rolex Yacht-Master watches made from Rolesium make for an interesting talking point to wear with elegant attire and often make for sophisticated gifts to mark an anniversary or wedding day, especially for those who prefer their wristwatches to exude a very classic look. That said, Rolex packs a lot of modern technology into the design of a Yacht-Master watch such as the model 1266, which not only offers a very compact and manageable case size for those with a slender wrist but has also been forged from a material that is exclusive to the Yacht-Master watch range itself. Stainless Steel and platinum are materials chosen for their robust, corrosion-resistant and luxurious properties, whilst the three-link design of the oyster bracelet creates a timeless look whether paired with elegant or casual attire. Polished middle links and brushed outer links create a unique look against the wrist, especially when you consider that these finishes differ from those seen in the Rolex Submariner and Sea-Dweller models, which instead offer a fully brushed bracelet finish.

Rolex Yacht-Master ref 116680

One of the most popular Rolex Yacht-Master watches has to be the ref 116680 with a blue ceramic bezel. Rolex had begun equipping its watches with Cerachrom bezels back in the year 2005. This model was made available in stainless steel, two-tone Everose, or yellow gold, and since it belongs to the Yacht-Master II collection, measures a broad 44mm diameter. As of 2019, Rolex Yacht-Master II watches were equipped with the Calibre 3235 – a trusted workhorse for many of Rolex’s models. Framed inside this striking blue bezel is a white dial adorned with a small second sub-counter in blue at 6 o’clock, along with a countdown that can be programmed for a duration of between 1 and 10 minutes. The programming is memorized by the mechanism so that at a reset it returns to the previous setting and once launched, can be synchronized on the fly to match the official race countdown.

The Oysterflex bracelet is just one of the many appealing features of the Rolex Yacht-Master series. Although creating the aesthetic and sporty look of a rubber strap with its outer elastomer rubber shell in black - inside the structure of the bracelet is a series of flexible metal inserts. The Rolex Yacht-Master II ref 226659 debuted in 2019 with the desirable Calibre 3235 secured to the heart of its case, creating plenty of power reserve for those occasions when taken off the wrist, promising superior reliability and accuracy. Its classic black and white gold colourway make it easy to pair wot formal, casual or elegant attire.

Rolex Yacht-Master Watch Review

Rolex yacht-master review.

Rolex has built a reputation on their classic and timeless designs. They’re not one to release a new model every other year. In fact, after the launch of the Daytona in 1963, it would be nearly another 30 years before they’d debut an entirely new model. That model was the Rolex Yacht-Master. Here, we’ll provide a Rolex Yacht-Master review, including key features of the Rolex Yacht-Master, the history of the Rolex Yacht-Master through the years, and notable wearers.

rolex yacht master water resistance

List of Key Features of the Rolex Yacht-Master

  • Case: Available in three different sizes – 37mm, 40mm, and 42mm – and two materials – gold or two-tone gold and platinum
  • Bezel: Bidirectional, rotatable, 60-minute graduated bezel
  • Crown: Screw-down, Triplock, water-resistant crown system
  • Depth Rating: 100 meters of water resistance
  • Movement: Perpetual, mechanical, self-winding movement manufactured by Rolex
  • Band: Offered with either an Oyster bracelet or Oysterflex strap

History of the Rolex Yacht-Master through the Years

The very first  Rolex Yacht-Master  was the Reference 16628. The brand only offered the model in a 40mm, 18-karat yellow gold case with a white dial. The Ref. 16628 also came equipped with a screw-down, Triplock crown and boasted 100 meters of water resistance. Inside, it housed the Caliber 3135 movement.

For the first several years, Rolex only made minor changes to the Yacht-Master line. In 1994, they released a slightly different iteration of the Yacht-Master: the Reference 68628. This variation was smaller, with a 35mm case. That same year, they also added a women’s version of the Yacht-Master: the Reference 69628. It showcased an even more modest case size, measuring just 29mm.

In 1999, Rolex introduced the first major update to the Yacht-Master collection. That year, they debuted an all-new, patented combination of metals created specifically for the Yacht-Master. They called this two-tone combination of stainless steel and platinum, Rolesium . At the annual Basel World Fair, Rolex launched the material in three different sizes. These included the 40mm Reference 16622, 35mm Reference 168622, and the 29mm Reference 169622.

The next update to the Yacht-Master collection came in 2005. That year, Rolex added another two-tone variation to the line, this time in stainless steel and 18-karat yellow gold. They offered the new colorway in the 40mm Reference 16623. Two years later, Rolex made the most significant change to the Yacht-Master line with the addition of the Yacht-Master II . However, the lineage of the original Yacht-Master has continued.

Rolex Yachmaster Crown view

In 2012, Rolex released the next notable upgrade for the Yacht-Master with the Reference 116622. While the model retained its 40mm sizing, it featured an all-new “super case” with different styling. In addition, it boasted an all-platinum bezel as opposed to a combination of platinum and stainless steel. Last but not least, it came equipped with a refined version of the Oyster bracelet featuring an upgraded clasp.

Three years later, Rolex debuted another first for the brand in the Yacht-Master collection’s Reference 116655. This time, instead of a new metal, they introduced their own rigorously designed and tested variation of the rubber strap. The Oysterflex bracele t marked the first-ever rubber strap for the brand. Ever since, it’s become a staple of the Yacht-Master collection.

In the past several years, Rolex has continued to make subtle updated and additions to the Yacht-Master line. One of the latest releases is the Yacht-Master 40 with a multi-color, gem-set bezel. More recently in 2019, Rolex introduced the first 42mm time-and-date Yacht Master Reference 226659.

Deep Dive on Key Features of the Rolex Yacht-Master

For years, 40mm was the standard sizing for the Yacht-Master. The smaller, 35mm variation was the only alternative up until around 2016. Rolex has since replaced it with the 37mm iteration for a smaller option. In addition, it’s only been since 2019 that Rolex has made a larger, 42mm option available.

Rolex Yachtmaster Blue Dial

One of the most notable key features of the Rolex Yacht-Master is the bidirectional, rotatable, 60-minute graduated bezel. Its design helps skippers measure and anticipate the crucial countdown interval leading up to the start of a regatta or sailing race. The screw-down, Triplock crown is another key feature of the Rolex Yacht-Master. This water-resistant system has been a staple of the model since its inception.

With only 100 meters of water resistance, the Yacht-Master is perfect for enjoying a day on the water as opposed to scuba diving. Yet, its in-house, perpetual, mechanical, self-winding movement makes it a robust watch for any occasion. In addition, the option of Oyster bracelet or Oysterflex strap made it versatile enough to take from land to sea.

Who Wears the Rolex Yacht-Master?

The Yacht-Master is a popular choice among many of today’s top entertainers, athletes, and chefs. Some of the Yacht-Master’s famous wearers include TV personality Ellen DeGeneres and film icons like Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis . Athletes across an array of modalities also appreciate the Yacht-Master. You can find it on the wrist of star players like former pro-footballer David Beckham, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan , and former World Number One golfer Justin Thomas. Last but certainly not least, the legendary chef Emeril Lagasse is among the Yacht-Master’s celebrity fans.

Rolex Water Resistance: Complete Guide to Rolex and Water

Rolex Water-Resistance: Complete Guide to Rolex and Water

Many people associate Rolex with reliability, robustness, accuracy, and perfection.

Today, most people also expect a Rolex watch to be water-resistant, and the fact is that all Rolex watches actually are water-resistant.

It is widely known that Rolex has been to some extreme and demanding places. Rolex watches have been brought to the lowest lows and the highest highs,

For a watch to be truly reliable in extreme conditions, it needs to be water-resistant. And while watches that offer hundreds of meters of water resistance, will, in most cases never be brought to these depths, the high water resistance is a testimony to the extreme outer factors, such as water, and the pressure of water, that a watch can handle.

With Rolex’s vision of perfection in mind, you can expect that Rolex has gone to great lengths to improve each and every aspect of its watches. One of those aspects that play an important role is the watches’ water resistance.

Rolex’s constant pursuit of perfection has meant that Rolex has consistently improved the water resistance of its watches. Both to make the water resistance more reliable and also to make them withstand greater water pressure resistance.

In this article, we’ll look closer at Rolex water resistance, how  Rolex watches put its watches to the test to ensure water resistance, and how deep you can submerge different models.

The first water-resistant Rolex watch

The first water-resistant Rolex watch was the Rolex Oyster. This watch was introduced in 1926. Rolex has received the respect of developing the world’s first water-resistant watch, but an interesting anecdote of this is that there’s actually more to it than the fact that Hans Wilsdorf invented the first water-resistant wristwatch.

At the time, the watch was promoted as ”water-proof”, and we’ll go more into detail about water-resistance vs water-proof further on.

rolex yacht master water resistance

Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex, did not actually invent the Oyster concept in its full. Instead, his Rolex Oyster was based on a patent initially filed by Paul Perregaux and Georges Peret in 1925.   Wilsdorf purchased all rights to the patent from them When he saw their design, and then used elements of their screw-down crown design in his own Oyster case. The following year, he came to register his own Oyster Case innovation. In other words, while Rolex is usually credited for making the world’s first water-resistant case for a wristwatch, the whole truth is actually that the original idea and design for a water-resistant case belongs to Perregaux and Peret.

The name Oyster is of course very appropriate for the first water-resistant Oyster watch, both because of the oyster’s close relationship with the ocean and water, but also because of its ability to keep extremely tight.

Water-resistant vs water-proof

As you saw in the advertisement for the Rolex Oyster, it was advertised as water-proof. Today, however, watch brands promote their watches as water-resistant.

Why, you may ask?

Well, the reason why watches are no longer advertised as water-proof is simply because of the fact that nothing is water-proof. Eventually, everything will leak water, and, in the case of watches, if a watch hasn’t been serviced in a long time, for example, the waterproofness cannot be guaranteed, and therefore it is not accurate to advertise as a watch as water-proof when it isn’t, or can’t guarantee that it will be at all times.

Vintage Rolex Submariner advertisement

In fact, there have been many cases in the US brought before the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) due to watches being advertised as “waterproof” (and then failing). As a result of this, they simply asked watch companies (and companies were clever enough themselves) to stop using the term. So around 1968, you do not see a lot of watches with the term ”Waterproof” on them.  Instead, they state that they are “water-resistant”.

Now, let’s zoom in on Rolex water resistance in modern times, how Rolex can create water-resistant timepieces, and what type of water-resistance different watches in their range have.

Rolex Submariner 16613lb

Let’s look at what Rolex says about its watches: ” Tested test • ed Subjecting our watches to extremes they are never likely to encounter. A series of exacting trials designed to ensure our watches excel in any real-world conditions. The way to ensure a Rolex wearer can go faster, further, and deeper. The way we constantly invent, improve and innovate. The Rolex Way.”

This quote shows the mindset of Rolex, and what they do in order to develop watches with robust and reliable characteristics.

First of all, when it comes to water resistance, Rolex develops its watches so that they can endure conditions that most people are likely to ever encounter. For example, the Rolex Submariner is a dive watch, originally developed for professional divers. Today, the Submariner offers 300-meter water resistance, but the fact is that the vast majority of Submariner watches will never come near that kind of depth. In fact, most Submariner owners won’t even wear their watch when they go swimming.

Rolex Submariner 16610

So part of developing watches that have above and beyond abilities is ”for the show”, to show people what the brand really is capable of developing. But most importantly, they exist because that is what people expect when buying a high-end luxury tool watch, whose purpose, at least originally, and at its core, is to be used out in the field, and in real harsh diving environments.

Then, of course, we come to the most important part of water resistance when it comes to watches, and that is that it comes in very handy. While you won’t go diving at 300-meters, it feels good to know that a Rolex watch can handle water, so that it won’t get destroyed as soon as you get in contact with water.

But when it comes to water resistance, not all Rolex watches are created equal. At the same time, today, Rolex is able to claim that all of their watches are waterproof, up to a certain amount of water pressure.

Something to have in mind though is that the terms waterproof and water-resistant are used interchangeably by a lot of people.

Vintage Rolex Submariner Ad

What makes a Rolex water-resistant?

Now, I’ve touched on this topic briefly when discussing the first water-resistant Rolex watch, and believe it or not, the idea and concept for making today’s Rolex watches water-resistant, are based on the same concept. This is why the vast majority of Rolex watches feature ”Oyster Perpetual” in their name.

On the dial of most Rolex watches, you will find the words ”Oyster Perpetual”. These are small, but two very important words.

The word Oyster indicates that the watch has a so-called Oyster case, and is thus water-resistant. This guarantees a water resistance of up to 100 meters.

Vintage Rolex Submariner Advertisement

The ”Perpetual” simply indicates that the Rolex watch is automatic, and features a rotor.

The Oyster case utilizes a system of screwing down the bezel, case back, and winding crown against the middle case which forms a completely closed and impenetrable case, resembling that of an Oyster shell.   This case structure keeps the movement safe both from water and dust.

Rolex Waterproofness testing

In order to guarantee complete reliability and in this case the guarantee of being fully water-resistant, Rolex goes above and beyond with its tests.

rolex yacht master water resistance

Before being dispatched from the factory, every Rolex Oyster watch is immersed in water and subjected to a pressure 10 percent greater than that found at the depth to which it is guaranteed. For a standard Rolex Oyster watch featuring a 100-meter water-resistant, this means pressure testing it to 110 meters. To ensure the reliability of water resistance when it comes to Rolex’s professional dive watches, Rolex pressure tests them 25 percent more than they are labeled to be able to withstand.

Extreme Rolex water-resistance

The Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller is Rolex’s most serious dive watch. This watch offers a water resistance of   3,900 meters (12,800 feet), which goes to show Rolex’s consistent devotion to perfection and going above and beyond. Because the fact of the matter is that no Deepsea Sea-Dweller will ever use their watch at that kind of depth.

But at the same time, it is also to show just what they are capable of.

Each and every single Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller is tested in a specially designed high-performance tank. This stainless steel hyperbaric tank is cast in a single piece and weighs 1.3 tonnes. The tank is built to simulate the pressure at 4,875 meters (16,000 feet) below sea level.

rolex yacht master water resistance

The force exerted upon the watch at this depth is equivalent to a weight of 4.5 tonnes. And if the watch is not up to par, it means that at this type of pressure, the watch will implode.

As a result, it means that if you own a Rolex Deepsea, it means that the watch has survived this truly impressive test.

A part of Rolex’s marketing strategy has been to show people just how reliable and robust their timepieces are, by putting them to the test in the field, and having them used as real tools by true professionals.

When it comes to Rolex water resistance, the single most important event for Rolex was on 26 March 2012, when the DSV Deepsea Challenger carried a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Sea-Dweller Deepsea Challenge prototype diving watch to a depth of 10,898.4 meters (35,756 ft). The Rolex watch which was attached to the outside of the submarine resisted the water pressure and continued to perform with Rolex’s distinct precision once back above water. This is the deepest ocean depth anyone has explored, and the impressive fact that a Rolex was used during this expedition at such an extreme depth is something to truly brag about.

Now, of course, none of the regular Rolexes will ever be able to withstand such pressure, however, just the mere knowledge and event just goes to show that Rolex means business. In everything they do.

Is your Rolex watch water-resistant?

Whether your Rolex watch is water-resistant or not depends on a lot of factors.

The first thing you want to consider is age.

Ideally, you should have your watch pressure tested every year in order to ensure full water resistance. This is especially if you plan on going swimming or diving with it.

Vintage Rolex advertisement

As such, if you have an old Rolex watch, in particular vintage, and you have not had it pressure tested the last year, you should always have the assumption that it is no longer water-resistant and may leak in water if you come in contact with water.

But Rolex watches are water-resistant, right? How does this make sense?

Well, the fact is that all Rolex watches have seals and a crown. Over time, the seals will dry out, and this means that they may no longer offer complete water resistance. Furthermore, the crown of your watch is a sensitive spot of your Rolex watch, as it is a spot where water has a, in theory, direct channel to the movement. And water is the greatest enemy of a watch’s movement.

The Gaskets form seals around the stem of the crown, pushers, and correctors and sit inside the case and the crystal. The gaskets lose elasticity and the ability to form a proper seal over time.

Vintage Rolex advertisement

The bottom line is that over time, these deteriorate and become less effective in keeping moisture out, and this means that while your Rolex watch is on paper water-resistant, it may not be. To ensure complete water resistance, you, therefore, want to do yearly pressure tests of your watch, and if you want to take it one step further, regularly service your watch. On each service, the seals are replaced to new, fresh seals, which of course increases the reliability of the watch’s water resistance. There are many external factors that can make the gaskets and seals less effective over time, and thus risk compromising your Rolex’s water resistance, but more on that later.

The bottom line? if the seals and gaskets are old, even the most serious Rolex dive watch such as the Deepsea Sea-Dweller should be water-resistant to 3,900 meters, but may start leaking at just a few meters in the water.

Furthermore, if you have dropped your watch or put it under stress of some sort, this might also compromise your Rolex’s water resistance.

In other words, just because your watch is water-resistant to X meters, doesn’t necessarily and always mean that it is in practice.

How to look after your Rolex watch to keep it water-resistant

Now, do by no means take our tips for keeping your Rolex water-resistant as any guarantees that it will be. Here, we will only bring up the things that can compromise the seals and gaskets of your watch, and thus harm its reliability.

First off, extreme temperatures are not good for any watch. Extreme temperatures and particularly extreme and fast temperature changes can accelerate the natural degradation of the seals, and over time, it can reduce and compromise the water resistance of your Rolex to the point where moisture or water can find its way inside the case.

You should, therefore, be particularly careful when using your watch in a sauna, hot tub, hot shower, or in similar places.

As mentioned, accidentally dropping your watch,   can also compromise your watch’s water resistance.

Another critical point of your Rolex watch is the crown. Rolex watches feature either a trip-lock or a twin-lock crown, which means that it is secured in either two or three places. This means that, in theory, Rolex watches are water-resistant even when the screw-down crown is not screwed in thanks to the rubber gaskets and seals that work in conjunction with the Rolex crown to keep water out. But if those gaskets and seals haven’t been changed in a while or have been degraded by other factors, water could penetrate the case.

Vintage Rolex advertisement

Therefore, not screwing down your watch’s crown when your watch is in contact with moisture or water can be extremely dangerous, as it greatly compromises the water resistance of the watch.

Therefore, always, always, always, make sure that the crown of your Rolex watch is safely and fully screwed down to the case. We have seen many people who have forgotten to screw down the crown of their Rolex, for example when washing their hands, and the result has in some cases been that water has found its way inside the case. The result is of course a costly full service of the watch to get out any water and moist quickly to prevent rust.

Aftermarket parts, modifications, accessories.

This is an area where you want to be really careful.

Rolex invests millions and millions into developing each and every single part of their Rolex watches so that they meet the absolute toughest standard. Not to mention when it comes to water resistance.

Therefore, when you replace factory components with non-Rolex “aftermarket” components, you risk diminishing the water resistance of your Rolex.

Common aftermarket parts that can be particularly dangerous are the sapphire crystal and the crown. The way these are installed on your watch is, of course, very important. If you want to be fully secure, you want to have the job done by either a very experienced and skilled watchmaker or an official Rolex service center.

Different Rolex watches offer different water-resistance

Let’s look a little at the water resistance that different Rolex models offer.

As you know, all Rolex Oyster watches offer a water resistance of at least 100 meters.

It is important to point out, however, that what this depth rating is actually saying is that a particular watch can handle pressure that is equivalent to X meters below the surface.

Do note that the Rolex models listed below refer to modern Rolex watches, and thus not vintage or older watches. Furthermore, you should also have the things already mentioned in mind, such that your watch may not be fully water-resistant even though it says so on the dial.

Do note that the water-resistance of the models below refer to the modern versions of these watches, and are Rolex’s water-resistance guarantees.

Vintage Rolex advertisement

Rolex Cellini

The Rolex Cellini is Rolex’s least sporty timepiece as it is a dress watch, and naturally, it is the watch with the least water resistance.

The Rolex Cellini has a water resistance of 5atm, which is 50 meters. This means that you can submerge the watch underwater, but ideally, you should not come in contact with more than a few splashes of water. With watches that have this low water resistance, it is recommended that you keep the watch away from water. Especially considering that the Cellini comes on a leather strap. Minimize exposure to the water and by no means should you dive with your watch.

Rolex Datejust water resistance

All modern Rolex watches are “Oysters”. This means the Datejust 41 , Datejust 36, and all Datejusts in between. As mentioned earlier, since they are “Oysters”, it means that they have a water resistance of 100 meters (330 feet). A watch with 100 meters of water resistance can be in the water for a while such as when swimming and bathing, but you should avoid going diving with it.

Rolex Submariner water resistance

The Rolex Submariner has a water resistance of 300 meters. Seeing that it is a dive watch, this watch is made for diving and can handle any diving trip that most “normal” people go to. This watch can be submerged underwater for longer times, so don’t worry.

Rolex Sea-Dweller water resistance

The Rolex Sea-Dweller is a serious dive watch that you won’t have to worry about getting wet. The Rolex Sea-Dweller has a water resistance of 4,000 feet (1,220 meters)

Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller water resistance

The Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller is Rolex’s most serious dive watch. This watch is waterproof to 3,900 meters / 12,800 feet, thanks to its helium escape valve. This is a watch you don’t have to ever worry about getting wet. Go diving, go swimming, or go deep diving. This watch will handle it all with ease.

Rolex Day-Date water resistance

The Rolex Day-Date has an Oyster case, and as such, it is water-resistant to 100 meters.

Rolex Daytona water resistance

The Rolex Daytona has an Oyster case and thus offers a water resistance of 100 meters. The Rolex Daytona has screw-down pushers and a screw-down crown.

An interesting fact is that the screw-down pushers are actually not developed in the same way as the screw-down crown. The real purpose of the screw-downs of the pushers is actually to prevent the wearer from accidentally pressing a pusher, thereby compromising the watch’s water resistance. In other words, you could dive with a Rolex Daytona with the pusher-screws unscrewed, but it is definitely not something we recommend.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual water resistance

This is a ”standard” Rolex Oyster watch . Therefore, it offers a water resistance of 100 meters as it features the Oyster case.

Rolex GMT-Master II water resistance

Another Rolex watch with an Oyster case. This means that it offers a water resistance of 100 meters.

What happens if your Rolex watch leaks water?

If you notice that your Rolex watch starts leaking, either by getting large amounts of water inside the case or simply getting moisture inside the dial, it means that your watch is not water-resistant and that you need to act quickly in order to minimize or prevent any long-term damage to your watch.

If you notice your watch has leaked water, you want to go to a watchmaker with your watch as soon as possible. The longer you leave the moisture or water inside the watch, the more it will damage all the parts inside your Rolex watch. Leaving your Rolex watch with water inside is particularly dangerous for the movement, as it will start the chemical rusting process of your movement.

And a Rolex movement that has rusted for a long time will need to change many parts. And this does obviously not come cheap.

If your watch only shows leaking in the form of condensation under the crystal, you can identify that your watch is not completely sealed early on, and if you do, prevent any permanent damage to your watch.

If water and moisture will find their way inside the movement without you noticing, it will eventually show in the form of a movement that isn’t working properly or stops working altogether.

If you notice moisture or water inside your Rolex, it is advised that you pull out the crown to stop the watch’s movement as soon as possible in order to minimize damage to the parts. Then visit a watchmaker.

Having this happen can be a real pain, so the best advice is to look after your watch regularly, but also to service and have your watch pressure-tested on a regular basis. It is good to have in mind that the costs to pressure test and maintain your Rolex water resistance rating pales in comparison to the costs of repairing watch damage.

Are Rolex Watches Waterproof? – A Historical Evolution and Utility Guide

Rolex Sea Dweller

Rolex watches have come to represent a coupling of luxury and technological innovation. Rather than having to delicately handle and only occasionally wear a Rolex watch, Rolex has designed their product to be strong and durable, while maintaining that level of luxury that has come to be expected. Perhaps more than anything else, the unassailable reputation of Rolex watches rests on their ability to withstand the extremes. The brand’s products have truly been to the highest, lowest, hottest, and coldest places on Earth, handling with ease the most hostile environments the planet can offer. And key to much of their success can be attributed to an invention dreamt up all the way back in 1926: the Oyster case.

This relatively simple innovation, one which has gone largely unchanged for the last 90+ years, did more than anything before or since to popularize the wristwatch. Beyond even that though, it has also formed the backbone for almost everything Rolex has created since – and solved one of the main problems facing any mechanical watchmaker: water resistance.

Are Rolex Watches Waterproof Submariner No-Date

The Waterproof Oyster Case

Before the Oyster case’s introduction, pocket watches were very much the only timepiece men used. Not so much for their practicality, but for the level of protection they afforded. Dirt, dust and moisture have always been among the biggest enemies of watch movements, and so keeping a pocket watch tucked away inside the wearer’s clothing when not in use helped safeguard its delicate internal components.

However, the usefulness of a model that could be worn on the arm was established during wartime, but the first examples proved relatively fragile. They were far more exposed to the elements than pocket watches and the earliest pieces allowed too much everyday detritus to enter the case and damage the caliber.

With the arrival of the Oyster, the brainchild of Rolex founder, Hans Wilsdorf, all of that was to change. Not only did the system of screwing the bezel, case back and crown against the middle case form an impenetrable barrier against the usual debris, it was so effective that it also provided a level of waterproofing never seen before.

Not one to shy away from promotion and advertising, Wilsdorf capitalized on this aspect of his timepieces in a series of marketing stunts. The most famous remains persuading a young British swimmer, Mercedes Gleitze to wear one of his Oyster models on a lanyard around her neck as she attempted to be the first person to swim across the English Channel in 1927. After 10-hours of being submerged in the icy waters, the watch came up still ticking.

The basic formula has been built upon and updated over the subsequent generations, until we reach today’s situation where all but the Cellini range of dress models in Rolex’s catalog benefit from at least 100m of water resistance. It all perfectly encapsulates the company’s original adage of building watches which are at once exceptionally handsome and stylish yet still resilient enough to be worn everyday.

Will any of these models ever be taken to 100m underwater? No, but a high water resistance factor isn’t just an indication of how deep a watch can be submerged, but is a testament to the robustness of the engineering as a whole. It is to demonstrate the prowess behind the manufacturing and give the wearer the peace of mind that they are unlikely to encounter anything that will seriously test the integrity of their watch.

Waterproof or Water Resistant?

If you research enough into the finer workings of mechanical watches, and particularly if you are interested in dive models, you will come across the terms ‘waterproof’ and ‘water resistant’ used interchangeably. They are not, however, the same thing.

Calling a watch waterproof suggests that it can never allow water to seep inside under any circumstances. This is, of course, impossible to claim. If you leave anything immersed long enough, it eventually will become compromised.

All watches are made up of a number of parts that have to fit together. Wherever those components meet becomes a potential weak spot that can hypothetically allow moisture to intrude, be it the sapphire crystal, the case back or especially the winding crown.

For that reason, the word ‘waterproof’ was banned by the FTC in the 1960s where it applied to watches and was replaced with the more accurate ‘water resistant.’

So what’s the difference?

Simply put, water resistant watches carry a rating which essentially certifies to what depth they will keep the water out, under ideal conditions. Every one of Rolex’s Oyster models is water resistant to at least 100m. The brand’s trio of dive watches – the Submariner, the Sea-Dweller and the Deepsea improve upon that considerably, coming in at 300m, 1,220m and 3,900m respectively.

So, true waterproofness can’t be guaranteed but, in the case of Rolex, it is worth noting that in 2014, one hapless vacationer lost his Submariner to the frigid Pacific Ocean during a fishing trip off the coast of British Columbia. It was found by a dredging company 14-months later, having lain at a depth of 100m all that time. A few turns of the crown (and removal of the barnacle from its bezel) and the watch started ticking away again.

No watch can truly be considered waterproof, but a Rolex dive watch comes about as close as anyone can realistically expect.

The Different Water Resistance Scales

Depending on the manufacturer, you will see a watch’s water resistance noted in one of three ways.

Meters is the most common, usually denoted by the letter ‘M’ in either lower or upper case and obviously relating to the actual depth the watch can be taken. This is the system you will see on Rolex models, with the corresponding depth in feet next to it. So 100m equals 330ft.

ATM stands for ‘atmospheres’ and is a unit of pressure. 1 ATM is, as near as makes no difference, the same pressure as would be experienced at 10m. 10 ATM is the same as 100m, or 330ft.

Bar is another widely used measurement of pressure, only rarely seen on watches but fairly common when talking about filling Scuba tanks. 1 Bar is more or less the same as 1 ATM.

What Does Each Water Resistant Rating Mean?

If you are interested in diving as a sport you might sometimes wonder why a watch needs to be water resistant to 100m, let alone the fearsome ratings that the likes of the Rolex Sea-Dweller or Deepsea carry.

The maximum depth recommended by most organizations for recreational Scuba is less than 40m when diving with air, and even the current world record is standing at a little over 300m. So, very few people are going to be able or qualified to take any Rolex watch past its indicated rating in theory. But again, it is all about pressure. If you were to somehow dive to 100m and experience some further increase in pressure, there is a chance that water would likely breach the case and cause damage.

All watches are originally certified under strict laboratory conditions, using static (i.e. not moving) pressure and they are brand-new at the time of testing. Real world conditions can vary from a laboratory environment, and as components age (particularly gaskets) water resistance can become compromised. So what activities can you do wearing watches with the various depth ratings their manufacturers issue?

Are Rolex Watches Waterproof Sea-Dweller 43mm

The 5 Most Common Water Resistance Ratings

Most watch manufacturers stick to the same five water resistance ratings, although you will sometimes see other values listed for certain models. With that in mind, here are the most common depth ratings that you are likely to en counter.

30m (100ft, 3 Bar, 3 ATM)

The lowest depth rating and the one you would expect every watch to have. It should be able to withstand the rain and standard hand-washing, but not much beyond that. Incidental contact with moisture is fine, but it is not advisable to take a watch with a 30m water-resistance rating swimming.

50m (165ft, 5 Bar, 5 ATM)

Still a very low resistance, but you should be okay for swimming if not too vigorous. Avoid any kind of high-impact water-sports, such as jet skiing or just diving into the pool. While a watch with a 50m depth rating should be fine for light swimming, it is not suitable for Scuba.

100m (330ft, 10 Bar, 10 ATM)

A good level of resilience which will keep the watch protected in virtually all everyday situations. Fine for swimming and snorkeling, but still not ideal for anything with dynamic pressure changes like high board diving or Scuba. While a watch with a 100m water-resistance rating can be used for Scuba diving (assuming it has fresh gaskets), most watches that were designed for Scuba will offer higher depth ratings.

200m (660ft, 20 Bar, 20 ATM)

The minimum level required for Scuba diving. A watch with a 200m depth rating is more than protected against day-to-day moisture contact, and in addition to Scuba, watches with 200m water-resistance ratings can also be worn during high-impact water-sports.

300m and above (1,000ft, 30 Bar, 30 ATM)

Any watch with 300m or more of water resistance can be worn for all water-sports as well as deeper and more prolonged diving activities. With the exception of saturation diving – an elite and highly specialized form of commercial diving where divers spend prolonged period in dry chambers, breathing different gas mixtures – a 300m depth rating is more than adequate for professional Scuba diving.

A Quick Look at Crowns

Vital to the success of the Rolex Oyster case and its ability to keep water away from the watch’s internal parts is the security of the winding crown. Traditionally, the crown has always been the ‘Achilles Heel’ of watch design, an easy point of entry for moisture and all sorts of other junk you don’t want anywhere near a delicate movement.

The early examples of the Oyster case featured a patented screw down winding crown arrangement, fitted with a metal gasket that fastened securely into a tube in the center watch case to form a watertight seal. When the first Submariner was made in 1953, that system had to be bolstered to withstand the extra pressures, and so Rolex devised the Twinlock crown, with a second gasket system inside the tube to create two sealed zones. The O-rings were also made from a synthetic material to form a stronger barrier.

In 1970, with the introduction of the Sea-Dweller, Rolex beefed up their winding crowns again and brought out the Triplock, with its (you guessed it) a new gasket arrangement that created three sealed zones to prevent moisture ingress. This time, two are in the case tube and the third remains under the crown itself.

As you might imagine, Rolex’s trio of dedicated divers use the Triplock crown to ensure their incredible water resistance, but a number of other watches in the catalog do as well. The watches from our list above shown with an *asterisk (the two Yacht-Masters, the GMT-Master II, and the Daytona) are all fitted with a Triplock crown, while still only being rated to 100m. In their case, the decision to include Triplock crowns could be partially due an aesthetic choice. The Triplock crown is bigger than the Twinlock and is more in proportion with the rest of the piece.

What Can Impact Water Resistance?

As we have stressed, your watch’s water resistance rating applies only under certain conditions. You can think of it as the fuel economy figures car manufacturers quote on their brand new models. They will have been tested in tightly controlled environments to ensure their maximum gas mileage, something it is very difficult to replicate in everyday life.

It is the same with watches, and many of the things that affect a car’s performance apply here too. Below, we outline what factors can reduce the effective water resistance.

Again going back to our car analogy, you wouldn’t expect a 10 or 20-year old model to return the same mileage as one just off the line. In the case of a vintage watch, it is usually safer (and cheaper) to assume they no longer hold the same sort of water resistance as they did when they were new.

Over time, their seals and gaskets lose their pliability and so their ability to form a tight seal. That’s why it is vital to have any watch, and particularly older models, serviced regularly – and we will cover that more in-depth in a minute.

Tempting though it may be, wearing your Rolex in the shower or hot tub is not advisable. Obviously its not the depth here that’s the problem, but rather the heat. Extreme temperature inversion, as you would experience walking into a sauna or jumping into a Jacuzzi, can hasten the deterioration of your watch’s seals.

Although Rolex use high tech fluoropolymers for their gaskets, which are especially resistant to corrosion and chemicals, as well as heat and cold, no material can be 100% guaranteed not to degrade or lose its shape eventually. Additionally, soap suds can also reduce the surface tension of the seals, and can also potentially damage the exterior finish of the watch too.

Aftermarket Parts and Accessories

This one really stands to reason. The Rolex manufacturing facilities are among the most cutting-edge industrial plants in the world, with countless millions of Swiss Francs poured into making sure every component made there is perfect. And, crucially, fits together with all the other parts to within tolerances measured in microns.

It is only this attention to detail, along with the extreme testing each watch is subjected to that allows the brand to make their claims about their performance. When you start replacing various elements of a Rolex with third party or aftermarket alternatives, there is a real risk of reducing the watch’s water resistance.

Possibly the most common cause for a Rolex getting water damage is forgetting to screw the crown back in after winding or setting the watch – and unfortunately it is something easily done. Any horology nerd who tells you they haven’t been guilty of it at least once is probably lying.

If you’re lucky, you’ll notice before any damage is done, and with the Twinlock and Triplock systems, Rolex watches are theoretically water resistant even with the crown left out. However, combine an unscrewed crown with any of the other factors such as old seals, those affected by heat, or even just incidental motion of the open crown, and it is a recipe for disaster. This is just one of those things you will have to train your brain to remember, hopefully before you land yourself with a hefty repair bill.

 Servicing

The number one best way to safeguard your watch’s water resistance will always be to stick to a regular servicing schedule. So, how regular is regular? That depends.

Since 2015, Rolex recommends 10-years between maintenance appointments, which is a massive gap and the longest in the industry. It is testament to just how confident the brand is in their engineering. Each new watch also gets a five-year warranty from date of purchase when it is first sold, but this does exclude user error.

It pays to remember the warranty applies to what Rolex calls ‘real life’ usage. If you subject the watch to an especially hard time, and particularly if it gets heavily knocked (something which can damage an internal gasket with no outward sign), then upping the frequency of service inspections is very much encouraged. Additionally, older watches can require more looking after. Vintage pieces will benefit from a service at least every five to seven years.

Whatever the age of your model, it is worthwhile having it at least pressure checked every year. This is a simple and inexpensive service most repair facilities offer, which will test the integrity of the watch’s seals so that you can replace any that are necessary.

Water Got Into My Rolex. What Should I Do?

Sometimes, it doesn’t matter how careful you are, the horology gods aren’t smiling on you and the worst can happen. If you get water inside your watch, it is likely the first you will know about it will be a slight condensation or fogging of the crystal. There might be other clues as well, such as the luminescence losing its glow or the hands stuttering or stopping entirely.

Once you’ve noticed any of these signs, time is of the essence. Salt water corrodes faster than fresh water, but whichever has found its way inside, it has the potential to do some real harm if not taken care of quickly. A watch caliber is made up of some extremely delicate parts and even the tiniest hint of rust caused by water damage will render them pretty well unserviceable.

What you do next depends on how long you think the water has been inside and how much there might be. If you believe it is just a small amount and it has only been there for a short time (say, a day or two) you may get away with trying to dry the watch out yourself. Leave it face up in a warm place; not too hot, as that can cause more problems. Alternatively, you could submerge the watch in some kind of desiccant, such as dry, uncooked rice or pure silica gel cat litter (preferably unused). These could well help to wick the moisture away from the most susceptible components, but this also does run the risk of getting debris into the movement if you are not careful.

All of that being said, we would always advocate a trip to your local watchmaker as soon as possible, regardless of how bad you think the water ingress might be. From the outside, it is impossible to tell just how much has infiltrated the case. Getting your piece to a service center as soon as possible could well be the difference between having to stump up for a once-over and a few replacement gears, or being served with a huge repair bill.

A professional watchmaker will be able to strip your model down, dry out and clean each part – of which there are likely to be at least 100 – and then properly reassemble it. While it won’t be the cheapest day out, it can be a small price to pay to go home with a working Rolex.

Final Notes on Water Resistance and Rolex Watches

For many people, Rolex really is the last word in watches designed to stand up to anything. That prominence hasn’t come about by chance, but rather as the end result of more than a century of tireless innovation, research and testing. Within the luxury mechanical watch sector, you will be hard pressed to find any other brand that can compete with Rolex, especially in terms of water resistance.

As we’ve seen, a water resistant watch isn’t ‘waterproof’ in much the same way that stainless steel isn’t stain proof. Not looked after properly, moisture or dirt will be able to get inside your Rolex regardless, and this is specially true if you neglect routine maintenance long beyond your watch’s recommended service interval.

However, thanks to the brand’s reputation for over engineering, along with generations spent perfecting manufacturing techniques, Rolex watches still make the ideal lifelong companion in just about any environment.

One of these technological innovations is a high resistance to water pressure. Through years of tried and tested models, Rolex is able to claim that all of their watches are waterproof, up to a certain amount of water pressure. Some are specially designed to be used by deep sea divers and can remain water resistant up to 1000 meters (3,281 ft). Despite this amazing feat, Rolex continues to develop new technologies and improve their watch’s water and pressure resistance. On 26 March 2012, the DSV Deepsea Challenger carried a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Sea-Dweller Deepsea Challenge prototype diving watch to a depth of 10,898.4 meters (35,756 ft). The watch resisted the water pressure and continued to perform with Rolex’s distinct precision. This is the deepest ocean depth anyone has explored, and a Rolex was there. However, the majority of Rolex watches can only maintain water resistance up to 300 meters.

Are Rolex Watches Waterproof Pressure Test

How does this amazing technology work? Rolex’s patented Oyster case is one of the most famous features of Rolex watches. Invented by Rolex in 1926, the Oyster case is the world’s first waterproof case for a wristwatch. It works by utilizing a system of screwing down the bezel, case back and winding crown against the middle case. This forms a completely closed and impenetrable case, resembling that of an Oyster shell. This impenetrable case provides a safe and dry environment for Rolex’s high-precision Perpetual movement, keeping out an assortment of elements from water to dust to pressure.

scuba diver wearing rolex watch

While it may be water-resistant, there are still many watery places a Rolex watch should not go. For example, hot tubs and showers are tempting places to take a Rolex, as they are not deep, thus offer not threat to the watch. However, the heat of the water in a hot tub or shower could cause major damage to the watch. Rather than worrying about water penetrating the case, one should be concerned about a gasket losing its shape, thus allowing water to enter the watch. Soap-suds can also cause damage, reducing the surface tension of the rubber gaskets in the watch, allows water to get in. Soap could also potentially harm the exterior finish of the watch. Thus, wearing of a Rolex in hot tubs and showers should be avoided. If a slight or moderate fog appears under the watch’s crystal, the interior of the watch has been penetrated. To hopefully stop the damage, pull the crown to stop the watch’s movement. As soon as possible, take the watch to a certified Rolex dealer for assessment.

THE ROLEX YACHT-MASTER: THE WATCH OF THE SEASON

Rolex Yacht-Master wristwatches

The pedigree Rolex boasts of today as a watchmaker is a product of their distinctive and evergreen designs. The Rolex Yacht-Master is another great example.

Rolex is not a brand that continues to introduce fresh models of wristwatches year after year. As a matter of fact, this watchmaking giant takes its time after every release before sending out another.

For instance, the Daytona came into the scene in 1963. Thereafter, we had to wait for another 30 years before Rolex launched another new model. This model released in 1992 was the Rolex Yacht-Master.

In this post, you get an extensive Rolex Yacht-Master review. Check out every detail of this amazing timepiece from Rolex with an entirely new and distinct outlook and function.

  • What are the different key specs of the Rolex Yacht-Master?
  • How did the Rolex Yacht-Master come to be through the years?
  • Who are the notable wearers of this wristwatch?
  • Who is the wristwatch best for?
  • Is the Rolex Yacht-Master best for any particular season?

Get answers to all of these questions and more as you read on. Keep reading!

An Overview of The Important Features of the Rolex Yacht-Master

A profile view of the Yacht-Master

  • Case Measurement And Variety: There are three distinct size varieties of the Rolex Yacht-Master. It can either be 37mm, 40mm, or 42mm. Also, it comes in two material varieties. Such as platinum, and gold, or two-tone gold.
  • Bezel Details: The bezel is a 60-minute graduated, rotatable, bidirectional bezel.
  • Crown Details: It features a Triplock, water-resistant, screw-down crown system
  • Depth Rating: Rolex Yacht-Master can go as deep as 100 meters underwater.
  • Movement Details: The timepiece features a self-winding, perpetual, mechanical movement built in-house by Rolex.
  • Band Details: You either get the Oyster bracelet band or the Oysterflex strap band.

As mentioned above, the Rolex Yacht-Master is not just any random release from Rolex. With the space of 30 years, the matchmaking world knew how much of a bombshell Rolex would drop in 1992.

Simply put, the Rolex Yacht-Master maintains a rather special spot in Rolex’s array of sports watches. The water-resistance feature combined with a rotatable bezel is not an entirely unique blend of features. These are two features Rolex Yacht-Master shares with the Submariner.

However, the Submariner is water-resistant to as low as 300 m underwater. While the Yacht-Master water resistance is only as deep as 100 m underwater. You cannot refer to the Rolex Yacht-Master as a tool watch.

Furthermore, the Yacht-Master comes in different case materials varieties. There is the platinum and steel type. Also, there is the gold and steel type also referred to as Rolesium and Rolesor. Depending on the size and metal you opt for, you can either get something subtly or unequally luxurious.

How Did The Rolex Yacht-Master Come To Be Through The Years?

The Reference 16628 was the very first Rolex Yacht-Master to hit the world of wristwatch lovers. Rolex simply presented this model with a 40mm measurement. In addition, the case was an 18-karat yellow gold type. Plus, it came with a white dial.

More so, the crown of this first version of the Yacht-Master was a Triplock crown that also featured a screw-down. Lastly, Ref. 16628 again had a water resistance feature as deep as 100 m below water level.  Plus, it came with the Caliber 3135 movement housed in its shell.

As the years passed, Rolex continued to make alterations to the Yacht-Master line. Check out the different changes and the years they came into the picture.

1994: The First Two Modifications

Initially, years into the production of this wristwatch, Rolex barely made any modifications to the Yacht-Master model. However, in 1994, the brand introduced a negligibly varied iteration of the Yacht-Master. That was the Reference 68628 model.

This new reference was a smaller variation as it came with a 35mm case. In the same year, Rolex again introduced a women’s edition of the Yacht-Master. This was the Reference 69628. This women’s edition presented an even more subtle case size. Its case measurement was a mere 29mm.

1999: Yet Another Update

There was another update in 1999. This time, Rolex made the first huge update to the Yacht-Master lineup.

That year, Rolex showcased a completely fresh, patented blend of metals made particularly specific to the Yacht-Master timepiece. Rolex named this two-tone blend of platinum and stainless steel, Rolesium.

The watchmaking brand unveiled the material used in 3 distinct sizes at the annual BaselWorld Fair. These distinct variations were:

  • The 29mm Reference 169622.
  • The 35mm Reference 168622
  • The 40mm Reference 16622

2005: The Stainless Steel Addition

In 2005, we saw another update to the Yacht-Master line. In that year, Rolex introduced another two-tone variety to the collection. However, this time it came in stainless steel and 18-karat yellow gold case. Rolex presented the new colorway housed in the 40mm Reference 16623.

Yet, barely two years later, Rolex gave us the most notable modification to the Yacht-Master collection. That year, we witnessed the launch of the Yacht-Master II. Nevertheless, this was not the end for the original Yacht-Master collection. The evolution continued.

2012: The Reference 116622

Rolex debuted another new and significant upgrade to the Yacht-Master line in 2012. This upgrade came with the Reference 116622.

For this variation, the brand maintained its 40mm size measurement. But, there was a completely fresh “super case”. This case came with a unique design.

More so, it showed off an all-platinum bezel. This is a different feature compared to the usual blend of stainless steel and platinum. To wrap it up, this variation came furnished with a sophisticated version of the Oyster bracelet. This Oyster bracelet featured a refined clasp.

2015: Welcome The Rubber Strap

Only three years after Reference 116622, Rolex introduced yet another first of its kind. The brand launched the Yacht-Master Reference 116655 wristwatch.

And, this time, Rolex didn’t go for new metal. Instead, they debuted their own precisely built and tested edition of the rubber strap. Plus, it was the Oysterflex bracelet that captioned the introduction of the first-ever rubber strap for the brand. Thereon, the rubber strap is now a staple of the Yacht-Master lineup.

Conclusively, a lot happened in the last few years. Rolex proceeds to create subtle upgrades and improvements to the Yacht-Master collection. A notable example of these additions is the latest release of the Yacht-Master 40.

This addition presents a gem-set and multi-colored bezel. Most recently, in 2019, Rolex launched a maiden addition. This was the 42mm sized time-and-date Yacht-Master Reference 226659. We must add that this was yet another big one.

Finally, the name “Yacht-Master” is moreover, incidentally, the term used for a certificate of competency in yachting. This term goes to a competitive athlete in yachting. The Royal Yachting Association is responsible for presenting this certificate of proficiency.

It is not clear whether or not there is any particular link between the RYA and the Yacht-Master wristwatch. However, you will agree that this is one interesting discovery.

A Deeper Look Into The Major Features of the Rolex Yacht-Master

A Yacht-Master wristwatch

In this section, you get to discover a deeper view of the details of the Rolex Yacht-Master. You will find out more about the case sizes, the bezel, the water resistance, and so on. Follow through!

The Rolex Yacht-Master Case

For several years, the Rolex Yacht-Master maintained 40mm as the standard sizing. Hence, most of the Yacht-Master watches made had this sizing. Thereafter, there came a smaller version in the 35mm variation. This was the only other option up until another introduction in 2016.

Over time, Rolex ensured there is a replacement for this with the 37mm iteration. With this iteration, we had another smaller alternative.

Additionally, there was another introduction to this lineup in 2019. That year, Rolex built a bigger, 42mm alternative. This alternative is available to those who prefer a bigger wristwatch.

The Rolex Yacht-Master Bezel

The bezel is another perk that sets the Rolex Yacht-Master aside from the rest of the pack. It is one of the most significant and major features of the Rolex Yacht-Master.

This is the rotatable, bidirectional, 60-minute graduated bezel. Thanks to its design, it is a tool watch for skippers.

With this bezel, skippers can calculate and predict the important countdown period. So, they get ready for the beginning of a sailing race or regatta.

The Rolex Yacht-Master Crown

More so, there is the screw-down and Triplock crown. This is also another major part of the Rolex Yacht-Master. The combination of the Triplock with the screw-down leaves barely anything more to be desired of the crown part of this timepiece.

The Rolex Yacht-Master Water Resistance

In addition, there is the water-resistant system that comes with the Rolex Yacht-Master wristwatch. Over time, this feature evolved into a staple of this line of wristwatches. This is one partnership that existed from the launch of this timepiece.

This Yacht-Master wrist watch comes with only 100 meters of water resistance. It is safe to say that the Yacht-Master wristwatch is ideal for basking a day on the water. It might not be the best watch to wear to scuba diving.

The Rolex Yacht-Master Movement

This will be incomplete if we fail to add information about the movement housed in the Yacht-Master wristwatch. This is the in-house, self-winding, mechanical, perpetual movement. This movement goes on to make it a powerful timepiece. With the addition of this movement, the Rolex Yacht-Master will pass as the perfect timepiece for any outing.

The Rolex Yacht-Master Oysterflex Strap

Finally, there is the presence of the Oysterflex strap. Thanks to this addition, this timepiece is now versatile enough. It can adapt to both the usual land conditions as well as the sea climate. Learn more about this innovative addition below.

Simply put, the Oysterflex bracelet is rather an excellent display of effort. The Oysterflex strap is one of the most charming qualities of Rolex as a watchmaker

This innovation is a rather clear demonstration of what one can only characterize as a remarkable level of utmost devotion. Rolex displays how much work the brand is willing to put into each of their creations with this one.

For this particular inclusion, we can say one thing for sure. The brand dug deep into research and dedication to give what is today a revolutionary innovation.

This Oysterflex comes with a simple design. The design of this addition features the hypoallergenic and relaxing elements of a rubber strap. Similarly, there are the strength and shape-retention details of a bracelet.

Right in the heart of the Oysterflex bracelet, you have metal inserts. These inserts are products of nickel and titanium. With the help of these metal inserts, the bracelet gets fixed to the clasp and watch case firmly.

On top of that, there is a cover of “high-performance black elastomer.” For starters, “Elastomer” is a portmanteau term. It comes from the blend of the words “elastic” and “polymer”. This is a broad term to describe natural and man-made rubbers.

To add to the sophistication of the materials of the Oysterflex bracelet, the bracelet comes shaped in a somewhat rare fashion. You have ridges chipped into the face part of the bracelet. With this input, the bracelet can now appear better on the wrist. This is possible as it blends seamlessly with the natural curvature of the wrist. This is always a perfect sight on the wrist when worn.

The Celebrity Fan Base Of The Rolex Yacht-Master ?

The Rolex Yacht-Master wristwatch

  • Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan
  • Former pro-footballer David Beckham
  • Former World Number One golfer Justin Thomas.

Finally, the legendary chef, Emeril Lagasse appears on the list of admirers the Yacht-Master wristwatch have

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is not limited to how many productions a watchmaker has in its collection. A parade featuring well-executed and widely accepted timepieces might be all that is necessary. The Daytona and the Rolex Yacht-Master appearing on your collection is enough to boost the pedigree of your brand. Little wonder Rolex boasts of this Yacht-Master wristwatch as one of its best products.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.
