LE GRAND BLEU

Le Grand Bleu was built for US telecommunications baron John McCaw and was subsequently sold to the Russian businessman Roman Abramovich, who had it refitted to his own preferences, including the addition of a 16ft swim platform at the stern. According to Internet sources, Abramovich passed Le Grand Bleu to his friend and business associate Eugene Shvidler in June 2006. The yacht has a crew of 65 and carries a veritable arsenal of tenders and watertoys, both on her aft decks and in her extensive below-deck garage, where there is a large aquarium. Her watercraft include a 22 metre Dubois-designed sailing yacht, Bellatrix; a 21 metre Sunseeker motor yacht; two 11 metre, 60-knot Buzzi sports boats; and a landing craft to carry a 4x4 Land Rover used for excursions ashore.

LE GRAND BLEU Yacht – Elegant $150M Superyacht

LE GRAND BLEU Yacht was first built in 2000 by Bremer Bulkan Shipyard and has had a few updates since then.

Despite her age, she continues to be a trailblazer in the superyacht industry. To this day, LE GRAND BLEU is still one of only 58 motor yachts that measure longer than 100 meters.

Specifications

Measuring a grand 112 meters long, there is no wonder the LE GRAND BLEU yacht is known for its massive size. Her large size can house up to 20 guests and 35 crew members. Two Deutz engines power the superyacht, giving a max speed of 17 knots.

LE GRAND BLEU has an aluminum superstructure and a steel hull. One of the most notable changes in LE GRAND BLEU over the years was her refit in 2008.

While docked in Florida, they added a wastewater treatment system to LE GRAND BLEU to reuse wastewater and not dump it into the ocean.

Wastewater from ships is a huge source of water pollution, so it is great to see these changes.

Despite its large size, LE GRAND BLEU yacht does not sacrifice elegance and class. Designed by the famous Italian architect, Stefano Pastrovich, LE GRAND BLEU yacht has a sleek design that gives off a sense of sophistication.

Pastrovich is known in the superyacht industry as one of the best designers for both the interior and exterior of yachts. He definitely proved that with this ship.

image 12

LE GRAND BLEU interior

Some of the water toys include a 22-meter Dubois sailing yacht, a Sunseeker motor yacht, two Buzzi sports boats, and a landing craft that carries a 4×4 Land Rover. The garage does not only hold all of these tenders, though.

It also houses the superyacht’s own aquarium, so visitors can see the marine life of the ocean without having to go diving.

If that is not enough excitement, a new beach club was installed on LE GRAND BLEU for guests to enjoy the ocean view from the best spot on the ship.

This superyacht has withstood the test of time and continues to defeat records. Over the years, the LE GRAND BLEU yacht has only become better with age and grown to become what it is today.

It has been fascinating to see the many changes and additions to this vessel, and it will be exciting to see how it can top itself in the future.

104 m Le Grand Bleu

Exterior design: stefano pastrovich shipyard: kusch yacht bremen vulkan photographer: superyacht creations.

The story of Le Grand Blue (LGB) is something that belongs to another time, when people were capable to think and create things never done with a very limited amount of technology and experience. People who were at the same time brave and crazy.

Le Grand Bleu was designed by Stefano Pastrovich in five days in 2000 and she was built in a little over 14 months: one of the fastest custom project in history. The control of the entire construction and management was done not by a shipyard but by one man, Claus Kusch . … Read More

LGB carried two tenders, each 74’, and had a covered garage of around 80 Sqm. She had two heli-pads, a sliding ceiling over the owner’s bed and a monolith of glass on the bottom of the hull for observing the sea-bottom. These are very relevant numbers considering that they were developed at the end of the 1990s, when shipbuilding on this scale had not yet evolved very much.

Le Grand Bleu: the history from scratch

Claus Kusch has been one of the most relevant Yacht manager & builder that I met in my professional life. At that time I was employed by Martin Francis and I was involved in the design of Senses, at the really beginning of my carrier. Claus was the Yacht manager. After some time working together, Claus asked M. Francis if I could go to Germany in order to design a new vessel with characteristics similar to Senses, but longer, 104 meters. Martin agreed and I went to Germany. I did a preliminary general arrangement by hand with pencil and ruler since portable computer were not so common at that time. After five days of work in Germany, the profile and a preliminary General Arrangement was agreed. Then Claus flew to meet with the client and he sold the project I had designed. You can imagine the joy I had, little young architect, when this happened. Two months after my drawing was scaled up and given to all the engineers, interior architects, window builder and it was said to built the vessel in 14th months. I was asked to design the exterior details so I flew every week during one year from France to Germany in order to work at the shipyard, Vulkan.

The shipyard was Vulkan , an immense yellow hangar situated in Vegesack, a small town near Bremen, Germany. Vulkan is a German shipyard founded in 1893. In the course of the Second World War, 74 U-Boats were built here and the shipyard was subject to allied bombardment throughout the conflict. At the end of the war, it was used by the victors as a prison camp. After the war, from the 1950s, various ships, passenger, cargo and naval, were built here. Following bankruptcy in 1996, the yard was forced to close in 1997. The name was derived from Vulcanus, the Roman god of fire and blacksmiths and the Bremen Vulkan workers called themselves Vulkanesen. Today, part of the shipyard belongs to Lurssen .

Kusch Yachts, directed by Claus Kusch, rented the yard and gathered together a team of designers who formed the temporary technical office set up to design LGB. Stefano was charged with drawing the external lines, the general arrangement and the construction details of the external features. The construction of the ship was carried out identically to the drawings Stefano had made during his first five days at Rendsburg. Nothing could be changed because the owner had negotiated agreements on delivery within 14 months and any changes would have caused delays. The hull and superstructure were made of steel to reduce costs and reduce time construction. Her beam was extended to 17.68 m. to accommodate the two mega-tenders. Maximum speed was 17 knots and cruising speed 15 kts making LGB a very versatile yacht and in advance of her time.

LGB was then delivered and today my feeling is very strange about her: hate and love . I love her because she was part of my life, I hate because I would have liked to better design some features and I couldn’t because Claus had sold the project like it was drawn during the first five days. Very few people know the real story of LGB and very few people has known that year passed at Vulkan, all behind Claus to do this extraordinary vessel. Very few people today can say that I have been the designer. The only thing I can say is that during the early stage of my working life, I met one great man, Claus and a great designer Martin Francis that trusted me in what I was doing and gave me the possibility to work hard since the beginning of my professional life. Thanks to these past time and thanks to other experiences I can say that today is not so relevant that all people know that LGB come from my pencil. What is important is to work with a fresh spirit and be proud of people working with me. This few words are dedicated to Claus that today can watch me from the sky, and can see this little man grown and become a Yacht Architect. Stefano Pastrovich

The Mercedes look

Whenever I look back at this project the first thing that comes to mind is when, during the few days he gave me to draw the profile and the General Arrangement, Claus would appear now and then in the little room where I was shut up drawing, to see how the work was going, reminding me: “It has to look like a Mercedes!” … Read More With that General’s tone of his, he struck a certain fear in me but at the same time, I knew that he was trying to show me exactly what the client was expecting and that he had a lot of faith in me. The thing which still amazes me today, is how this project, ten years on, succeeds in maintaining a certain appreciation and a timeless class …maybe just like a Mercedes, as Claus wanted! Just Me, My Yacht & Helicopter | Le Grand Bleu

It was a wonderful hazy day in Isola Rossa yesterday and I decided to take my yacht to the beach, along with my helicopter because you just never know.

le grand bleu yacht interior

I do have a few other photos but the haze and super zoom turn the photo blurry. I’m going to post the photos anyway in hopes someone can tell me who this yacht belongs to.

In Picasa edit I cropped right into the hull and found some writing, but it is too distorted to read.

le grand bleu yacht interior

Even on a closer crop things get distorted. This is the best I can do.

le grand bleu yacht interior

Does anyone know who she belongs to? Curious minds are curious.

***UPDATE – This yacht is none other than the Le Grand Bleu . One of the largest private yachts in the world! Snap! She was seen floating on July 27-28 off the northwest coast of Sardinia. In the area of Isola Rossa.

“ It was previously owned by John McCaw, Jr., an American businessman, who sold her to Russian businessman Roman Abramovich in 2002. Abramovich had it refitted to his own preferences by HDW in Kiel, Germany. This included an internal refit and the addition of a 16-foot (4.9 m) swim platform.

In june 2006, abramovich gave le grand bleu to its current owner, friend and business partner eugene shvidler..

File:Le Grand Bleu 31July010.jpg

Souce: Wikipedia

Le Grand Bleu is powered by two 3,600 hp Wärtsilä engines. Details about the interiors are scanty as Abramovich is protective of his family’s privacy and highly security-conscious, but they were designed by Terence Disdale. “

“ on 27 june 2012 le grand bleu was lying off the italian riviera coastal fishing village of portofino. on 19 july 2012 le grand bleu was in porto cervo, sardinia. on 21 july 2012 le gran bleu was in front of wonderful cala luna near cala gonone, sardinia, and 26 july 2012 in the coral riviera front of the walled town of alghero still in sardinia .”.

Curious minds are curious no longer. Snap! Wow!

My friend is the current Navigator of this Yacht. It is in Argentina at the moment.

That’s awesome! Hopefully Ill get to see Le Grand Bleu also this year.

We sailed past it on March 24, 2022, on the west side of St Martin. It was heading south toward St Barths.

Le Grand Bleu is currently sat anchored right in the middle of Porto conte in the north west of sardinia, near Alghero

I saw Le Grand Bleu in the Coast of Helsinki, Finland in the summer of 2010. She was anchored so I has a chance to circle around it with my little motored boat. It was a beautiful day and I took many pictures of her in 360 angles. If you are particulary interested in this boat I can mail you the photos. Just contact me at [email protected] (I use this junk-mail very seldom so never mind if I don’t reply immediately!)

It was in Port Canaveral for 2 weeks in 2009 getting an upgraded recycled water system. It has a 72 ft sailboat and a 65 ft power yacht on the deck. Part of the sides of the hull can open for the jet skis and tenders. I live 2 miles by car or boat from Port Canaveral and no one here has ever seen anything like it.

Hi Jennifer only to clarify that I was the interior designer and the supplier of the interior decoration for the Owner John McCaw on Bremen Vulcan through its project manager Klaus Kush. Terence Disdale has never partecipate to this project. Mr. Abramovich, after purchase the ship has customized the interiors with the help of Dik Bannemberg design. Kind regards Luciano Di Pilla

I just saw Le Grand Bleau anchored off the coast of Kho Rhong Saleum Cambodia on 11th March. Pretty impressive, looks like it belongs in a Bond film.

Wow, it sure gets around! Thanks for letting me know! 🙂

I had the pleasure of admiring this beauty up close in the Bahamas in May of 2009. It has A sailboat and a smaller yacht aboard it. The crew didn’t let us get aboard but i was able to see alot of the outside from our cruise ship. Needles to say, i was intrigued! I’ve played the Powerball every week since! lol

He GAVE it to his friend…I’m obviously making the wrong type of friends here

We are in the same boat! 😉

I don’t even KNOW anyone that owns a boat that big…(((sigh)))

I don’t even know anyone that owns a boat, nor a helicopter, nor a smaller boat that sits on the bigger boat. (((total sigh))) 🙂

We need new friends…hehehe

When a ‘private’ yacht grows to that size it hardly seems private any more.

I prefer the privacy of a Mirror dinghy – no chopper required.

LOL! It would be too much for me!

…spotted that dingy last friday, while taking a coffee at putzu idu, it was anchored near the Mal di ventre island (I beleive it (still) belongs to Mr.AbramoRich oops typo Abramovich – Rusian tycoon and owner of Chelsea FC)

Please Jennifer, bring your yacht and helicopter to pick me up.

Ill be there at noon tomorrow! 😉

My bags were packed and I waited! Did I get the wrong day?

LOL … my, um … helicopter broke down over Niagara Falls. 🙂

Why can’t my friends give me gifts like this? 😉

I was only at Cala Gonone for a day but it wasnt there (on the 27th) so guess it passed onto the other side, anyway they have good taste in locations, and those beaches are too crowded so best enjoyed by boat. But HE GAVE IT to his friend? Hmm, maybe a really good friend…
